ABOUT THE RED JUNCTION BOXES

It's Mayor Toms decision to paint it red, the two of the most busiest intersections which is the one in Capitol and Osmeña blvd Jakosalem junction. But it is still an experiment initiated by the Mayor. The kind of paint in Capitol which lasted longer (4 weeks) is different from the kind of paint used in Osmeña blvd Jakosalem junction which only lasted for 3 weeks before it faded.
There is a so called RED ASPHALT that Singapore is using that lasts for a minimum of 3 years but the city has not enough money for it. CITOM is still studying the cost interms of time and money, wala pa sila ka discover sa exact material nga mo last longer pero barato.

The paint will initially be used sa SRP sidewalk but the Mayor told CITOM if it can be done in all 76 intersections in the city coz he wants to duplicate the kind of traffic scheme of Singapore and HongKong.
CITOM received feedbacks and observations for over a month of its implementation that it was effective in regulating vehicles to cross or step on the junction boxes during stop signal. For example, the driver tends to stop before the red line or there is an instinct to avoid the blood colored junction.:D
CITOM already passed a recommendation to the mayor to pursue the painting of all 76 intersections in the city. They also recommended to use the thermo plastic paint that will last for 2 years and it will be implemented kung nanay budget.
And sa SRP, the red paint is ready na for painting the sidewalks, they are just waiting for the seawall paint to arrive.

Global ICT congress to be held in Cebu

CEBU will host the two-day International Congress on ICT (information and communications technology), which will kick off on Nov. 16 at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino.

The event, which will be participated in by delegates from 40 countries across the globe, is organized by the Commission on Higher Education 7, Department of Education 7 and the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority 7.

The congress will take up issues on the global challenges in education.

Sustainable

Global Knowledge Partnership (GKP), an international multi-stakeholder network committed to harnessing the potential of ICT for sustainable and equitable development, will take part in the event.

Some of the topics to be discussed are “Achieving Universality in Education through ICT,” which will be tackled by Walter Fust, GKP chairman.

Hi Mark. Mao siguro ni nganlan ug "culture of excellence" nga Gov. Gwen would like Cebuanos to get used to. Thats great that the drivers are practicing what they learned at the seminar. Even riding a taxi in Cebu will be a wonderful experience.

CICC 90% complete

-Mr. Guanzon said that the roofing is almost finished, the only lacking is the fiber glass roofing @ the center of the building, the exterior walls including the interior and the partitions.
the walls will be mounted by sveral groups of constuction workers simultaneously. There are all in all 700 workers in two shifts, 400 in daytime and the remaining will be during night time.
-The Media Center was transfered to the second floor where the Secretariat will be located but it will also be transfered to the 1st floor.
-Sampaguita flowers will be planted in the surroundings of CICC building as requested by Gov Gwen for their beautification plans of CICC.
-Airconditioning units for the centralized airconditioning arrived the other day and the elevators just arrived this afternoon.

I think they can use the white cement/asphalt that is being used to make road/pedestrian markers. They can just add the color red to it.

OT: as I'm reading the news, grabe na gyud ang crimes sa Cebu particularly sa robbery... reports say that these guys are from Mindanao robbery group ...don't you think this is the price that Cebu is paying being a highly urbanized city? ...hope, the police authority is doing something.... u know guys, i'm not in Cebu right now but i'm worried of the news i'm reading on the internet... or are these news sensationalize or blown-out of proportion?

Multimedia group proposes video streaming at Fuente
The Freeman 10/06/2006

With the 12th ASEAN Summit fast approaching, a multimedia group is asking the city government to allow a giant multimedia screen to be put up inside the Fuente Osmeña Rotunda free of rent. The request was made by Style Assembly Inc., Cebu Dreamworks Philippines and Metro Cebu Uptown Jaycees who said that they will be purchasing a full color LED outdoor wide screen worth P10 million. The equipment is said to be the first in Cebu and one of the biggest in the country with 18 hours of continuous video streaming daily.

"We are reverentially beseeching that we be permitted to put up a structure of the afore-described screen preferably inside Fuente Osmeña circle, right beside or above the ASEAN Summit countdown machine. In the same premise, we are asking for your kind indulgence to allow us to exclusively operate in the area for five years without rent of the place," the group said in its letter to Mayor Tomas Osmeña.

In exchange of free rental, the group said they will be allocating a 15-minute daily video time for public service announcements of the city government. Likewise, they would also feature on-screen traffic situations in the city, weather updates via satellite feed and even a live coverage of the Sinulog festivity in January.

To defray expenses of the project, they said they also intend to be a "full advertising agency vis-à-vis selling video time to prospective clients."

Good News!

The Metro Cebu Bus system is now up and running. Several buses are now plying the Tabunok (Talisay City) - Cebu City route (MJ Cuenco-New Imus Road-P.Del Rosario-N.Bacalso Avenue-Cebu South Road)

They can't enter Mandaue City yet, otherwise the TEDMAN there will confiscate the licenses of the bus drivers.. Damn! I think it's now time for a Metro Authority with real powers similar to the MMDA.. Just a while ago, I saw a bus make a u-turn simply because it cannot enter Mandaue City!

Two types of buses bro, naay aircon, naa sad non-aircon. The airconditioned ones look like tourist buses. They look good naman, obviously because they're new, hehehe. But I'm not sure if these are brand new or just surpluses. The name of the bus is "Metro Cebu Transport" something..

I think they're still in the experimental stage because as of now there are still no bus lanes, or "official" bus stops. But I guess these will come later on.

Also, they can't enter Mandaue City so upon reaching the boundary, they will have to make a U-Turn but I hoped that this will be remedied soon because we really need an integrated mass transport system.

My brother-in-law was able to ride one. Minimum fare is P8.

Department Of Tourism-7 launches 12th Asean Summit official drink

In celebration of the World Tourism Day, the Department of Tourism Region 7 is organizing the 12th Asean Summit Official Drink Competition on Sept. 27 at the lobby lounge of the stylish Cebu Parklane International Hotel.

This unique competition encourages the competitive and creative spirit of the Cebuanos, as the talented bartenders of the different participating hotels and resorts battle and mix it out for a unique and distinctively Cebuano cocktail drink. The winning drinks, for both alcoholic and non-alcoholic category will be served as the welcoming drink for the delegates attending the Asean Summit to be held in Cebu on Dec. 11-14.

This event is spearheaded by the DOT-7 Regional Director Patria Aurora B. Roa, who is also the Chairman of the F&B Sub-Committee for the Asean Summit-Cebu Organizing Committee. Other members of the F & B Committee are the Department of Health and the Office of Muslim Affairs.

According to Dir. Roa, this drink should make the delegates feel more welcome aside from the usual courtesies that they will receive when they arrive. Aside from that, this official drink will give them a unique taste and impression of Cebu.

Ngeeks, it will look very very ugly if they put it inside FUENTE OSMEña Park especially if it's going to be permanent.

I suggest they put it in a building instead. The idea to put it at the junction of Colon street and Osmeña boulevard is much better too.

If they insist on setting it up at the Fuente Osmeña area, they can install it at Robinsons or at the top of McDonalds Fuente:

... yes, correct ka bai! i think one of the considerations why these guys insist on putting one at Fuente because of the volume of (traffic) motorists passing by that area from sunrise until the wee hours of the morning. the main purpose of this LED widescreen is to gain money from advertisements and if I'm the advertisers, I prefer my product to be seen by many people from sunup to sundown and I guess Fuente is the most feasible area in the city. However, volume of pedestrians and jeepneys are concentrated in Colon from morning to early evening (about 10pm) but i think it's still feasible in Colon because they are talking about 18 hours of broadcast, so they can turn it off from 12:00am to 6am.... hehhehehe!

^^exactly, I also thought that it's quite small but when we went there a while ago, it looks massive and huge. And the construction is vast... in every corner there are cons activities happening. They've also started mounting the internal and external walls simultaneously.

We went there a while ago, they are already working on the interiors. The works are also done simultaneously, so you will actually see some working inside and some outside.

OT: ...speaking of satellite dish, bai do u have a friend who knows how to install this thing. actually bai, when i came home for vacation in 2004, i brought with me a satellite dish (diameter: about 30 to 40 inches), complete with LNV, cables and a satellite top box or known as satellite receiver... unfortunately, up to now, my brother haven't been able to use it because he has not found someone who is knowledgeable about this thing.... help?

(btw, the reason i was able to bring one complete set of satellite dish and receiver because here in KSA, you can buy a complete set for a price of less than 3,000 pesos complete with intallation)

As we Cebuanos watched the footages on the wrath of Milenyo, most of us might have been touched. A mother crying ever the lifeless body of her child, a family wading waist-deep over a swollen thoroughtfare, an old man sadlly watching the remains of his house flattened by atoppled tree - these and more we saw as we basked in the comfort of our homes safe and undisturbed.

Thank God the typhoon spared Cebu. This must have been out unspoken reaction. Thank God indeed, for it by some twist of fate milenyo got us in its claw we would have been part of the spectacle on the screen. It is said that Cebu gets its share of a destructive typhoon once every ten years or so. The last to ravage the province, Ruping , struck in November 1990 or 16 years ago. ARE WE NOW RIPE FOR ANOTHER FATAL HIT? God Forbid.

Ruping was actually much stronger than Milenyo. Rushing at 240 kilometers per hour, it walloped Cebu City and environs like a giant scourge, snapping lampposts as through these were matchsticks and smashing to pieces residential and business houses. In the pier area boats of several tonnage were thrown off their moorings and one of this rammed hard into the underbelly of the old Mactan bridge rendering it impassable for weeks. Transmission lines were blown off and most of the province went about 4 weeks sans electric lights. With power gone water was a problem. For days people queued before private wells because their own faucets emitted nothing but air.

As we watched the catastrophe in Luzon, some of us must have asked: suppose another Ruping would hit Cebu this year, would the damage be as extensive before?

The probable scenario would be almost like a replay of the 1990 event. Houses would lose their tops, or get blown to pieces, bridges would collapse and power posts toppled down. Most likely, casualty would be heavier because flood waters will have more houses to sweep away, there being more of these now than years ago in rivers and esteros. In coastal areas too is an evident proliferation of makeshift structures. These too would be vulnerable to giant waves and many people would drown.

In the city most houses are of permanent materials so bracing them is not necessary. But like their mountain brothers, they ought to take precautions. And they (and the authorities) should ask: do we have enough rescue volunteers, fully equipped to do their job? Do we have helicopters in standby for emergency mission? In the wharf, are there fast-crafts ready to swing into action when needed? What about our LGUs? Do they have a ready supply of food items, of medecine and other necessities for displaced people? Do we have a pool of heavy equipment for immediate road clearing jobs?

Even if we are fully prepared, however, there is still a need for prayers> For man can do only so much. Without God even the strongest structure could fall. Unless the Lord builds the house in vain are the efforts of the workmen, says the GoodBook.
FOR ANOTHER RUPING< PREPARE WE MUST. AND PRAY WE MUST also.

^^^ yes, i can still remember very vividly during the days after RUPING hit Cebu... it was worst than Milenyo! for almost a month, we had no electricity and no water running from MCWD and we even used batteries to listen to the radio in which Y101 was one of the movers at that time and even created a jingle to uplift the spirits of the Cebuanos with Tommy Osmena's famous line on the background, "Cebu is down but not out! We can do it and we don't need help from the capital Manila" national figures at that time got irritated by Tommy's statement because it sounded boastful.... fortunately, Cebu stood up on its own...

And did you know that Supertyphoon Ruping was the cosliest typhoon in the Philippines from 1947? Bigger than Supertyphoon Rosing that hit Manila last 1995.

Peso appreciation to hurt Cebu economy

CEBU CITY— The appreciation of the peso would have an adverse impact on the Cebu economy since exports account for the bulk of its earnings.

Cebu contributes about 10 percent of the country’s exports earnings. For the first six months of the year, Cebu exports reached $2.36 billion. The province accounts for more than 90 percent of Central Visayas’ total exports.

Cebu exporters are alarmed over the continued strengthening of the peso against the dollar.

“Unpredictability is something the exporters are worrying about now, because we do not know how strong can the peso go,” Mandaue Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Eric Ng Mendoza said.

Mendoza, who owns a furniture company and is an officer of the Cebu Furniture Industry Foundation Inc. (CFIF), said exporters usually negotiate orders six months to one year in advance and fix the price based on current peso-dollar exchange rate.

He said that once set, quoted prices can no longer be changed even if there are changes in the currency exchange rate.

He said buyers rarely allow price adjustments because they could always get cheaper furniture in other Asian countries, especially Vietnam and China.

“That is why, it (strong peso) is very detrimental to exporters. We are losing our competitiveness in our region,” he said.

Furniture exporters, he said, were already experiencing the adverse effects of the strong peso.

The CFIF members reported that their production had dropped by 20 percent in the third quarter from their first and second quarter levels.

Mendoza urged the government to help the export sector cope with the peso strengthening.

Philexport president Apolinar Suarez said the association had furnished President Macapagal-Arroyo a position paper asking her to find ways to help the exporters.

“We, the exporters are seemingly becoming victims, instead of heroes of our looming economic success. We need the help of the government and to take issue on our plight to enable us to continue making our contribution to a sustained economic recovery that has so far been elusive in the past,” Suarez said in Philexport four-page letter.

Actually bai Jimbu, the Uniwide building has already been leased to a businessman. I forgot his name but I think Carlos Co man siguro tu. He plans to convert the structure into a commercial building. A rendering was posted by Sugbuanon months ago, nindot sad, mura ug mall tan-awon..

I'm confused. Why would they be getting "cheap" furniture from China when in fact the Chinese Renmenbi is very very strong against the dollar compared with the Peso. The RMB I think is around 7 to a dollar, compared with the peso which is P50 to a dollar.

I think there's nothing wrong with the appreciation of the Peso. For me, I would even like it to go down pa jud to the 1997 level of P26 to a dollar. Our economy during that time was already booming when we had that dollar rate and yet we already had a booming export oriented economy (electronics, furniture, etc.). Hehehe..

of course the appreciation of the peso is hurting our exporters because they're used to having revenues in that peso-dollar exchange rate... now that the peso is stronger, it only means lower revenues for these guys... BUT as the government (ate glo) would always say, the benefits of having a stronger peso is way way more (in a macro view) than the costs that these exporters are experiencing...

Na post na diay ni Sugbuanon ang rendering. I can't imagine if I've seen it or not. Anyway the development of Uniwide is good for Mandaue. Mr. Ouano really has to celebrate because the ASEAN has transformed his city not just an industrial hub but also to a commercial hub with an added attraction once the Boardwalk is completed.

5-year-old boy crosses Mactan channel

CEBU CITY --- At first glance, he was just like any other five-year-old, sucking on his lollipop and being cuddled by his mother shortly before he jumped into the Mactan channel Sunday morning. But Justin Daniel Junio, son of a retired Air Force official, was not just any five-year-old. He was destined to set a record.

Despite strong currents and polluted seawater, Justin achieved what many grown-ups could not. He successfully completed the three-kilometer Mactan Channel route in nearly two hours, an event witnessed by hundreds of cheering Cebuanos Sunday.

Life literally stopped for some Cebuanos, who wanted to witness the historic event. Ferryboats did not leave the pier as scheduled to allow their passengers to watch the swim while many went up the bridge of vessels under repair and maintenance at the Ouano wharf in Mandaue City. People even lined up the first Mandaue-Mactan bridge to watch the swim from afar.

They were not disappointed as they witnessed Justin become the youngest person to ever cross the Mactan channel.

Due to the strong current, Justin had to follow a circuitous route, increasing the length of his swim to almost six kilometers, beating a seven-year-old boy's 2.25 km swim from Alcatraz Island to San Francisco in May this year.

"We are very happy that he made it. Ever since, we were confident that he would make it because he loves the water so much and it was his desire to cross the channel," retired Air Force Col. Florencio Junio said immediately after his son emerged from the sea.

The waiting crowd at the Muelle Osmeña had already swelled from just a few to hundreds when Justin completed his swim.

Hundreds of spectators cheered and congratulated Justin as he was ushered to his parents when he reached the Muelle Osmeña boat terminal in Lapulapu City, finishing his historic swim.

The crowd continued to cheer him on and even followed the child to the waiting van hoping to catch a glimpse, with some taking pictures of the "child wonder."

When he completed his swim, Justin showed no sign of fatigue and stress while his mother, Ma. Vilena, 50, held him.

When asked by reporters if he was tired, he shook his head while he continued to drink his chocolate milk shortly before he was driven to his hotel where a medical team was waiting. The team included an endocrinologist, sports physician, child development specialist and a child psychologist.

"I'm very proud of him. I was excited and nervous but I knew he could do it," Justin's mother told the Inquirer minutes before her son begun his feat.

Justin was supposed to start swimming at 7:00 am Sunday from the ferry terminal in Lapu-Lapu City to the Ouano Wharf in Mandaue City together with his coach, M/Sgt. Jairulla Jaitulla and four frogmen from the Philippine Navy. But the delay as well as the overwhelming crowd and media frenzy irritated Justin, who, while sitting on his mother's lap, was already displaying signs of boredom.

After vomiting, Justin ran toward the rear of a boat and played for a time with its steering wheel. He finally took his jump around 7:37 a.m. without waiting for the cue from his father and the organizers of the event.

A navy boat, a speedboat from the Search and Rescue Team of Cebu City, two rubber boats from the Philippine Coast Guard also escorted Justin as he swam.

The five-year old swimmer started to swim back towards Lapu-Lapu City around 8:15 am but the strong current brought about by the passing shipping vessels and the polluted water slowed him down as he took an alternate route.

Justin stopped for several minutes along the San Miguel depot in Mandaue City and took his time playing in the water along General Milling Corporation, diving underwater a few times, on his way back to where he jumped off.

"There was no instance that he wanted to give up. This child does not give up and that is one good thing about him. He really loves to swim. What took us long in the water is the current, and he was playing. I was telling him that we better speed up because we were already hungry," Jaitulla, a former Olympic swimmer, told reporters.

Jaitulla also said Justin really prepared for Sundays event by regularly attending his swimming lessons at Plantation Bay where the child practiced in the sea aside from the pool.

He used to do 102 laps a day as part of his training, the coach said.

He said Justin had swum secretly from the pier of Naval Forces Central towards Ouano wharf last Wednesday covering a distance of 3.6 kilometers.

actually bai there are some disadvantages with a very strong peso especially if the appreciation is drastic, occurs in a short period of time, and other currencies in the region don't go with the trend. it will hurt industries that trade beyond the domestic market. you have the export business, tourism, i.t., and other industries too that suffer due to the adverse effect. it will make our products expensive to the international market. tourists from abroad will need more money if they want to travel to the philippines. industries that earn in other currencies (mostly dollar denominated) and spend for operating costs and salaries in peso make financial management crucial; with income targets hardly met because of that.

OFWs too are at a loss with a strong peso. with a strong peso, most ofws are forced to spend more of their money to meet a certain philippine peso equivalent. let me cite an example, an ofw from japan sends PHP50,000 a month to his/her family. a few months back, PHP50,000 was around JPY100,000. currently, to raise PHPY50,000, you need about JPY125,000 yen to make it even. it is negligible if you talk only of hundreds, but the adversity will become more apparent and pronounced when the amount goes even higher.

it will make some of our fellow filipinos want to travel abroad all the more and spend their money outside the the philippines.

if the effects of a strong peso will be felt at the micro level, by every individual, such that prices of goods become cheaper then all of us have the reason to celebrate. if it only means increasing our dollar reserves and no direct impact on the citizenry level there is not much to be happy about.

mao gyud...the rise of the peso is nothing but a 'pa-cute' of the government to make themselves look presentable and hide their shortcomings...things are not getting any cheaper...

the rise of the peso is a result of the improvement of the investment climate, which includes the positive sentiment of the investors and the remittances from ofws. i wouldn't agree to the impression that the government is making up all these to make it appear that our economy is improving. there really is basis for the rise of the peso (i believe). private financial institutions do make their own researches too and they themselves expressed the same remarks on the rise of the peso as indeed with basis.

as an ofw, even if i am at a disadvantage (at present) because of the surge of the peso, i have high hopes that in time, this will translate to cheaper goods for our people. it will not be tomorrow or the day after that, for certain it will come. an after effect doesn't always happen instantaneously, but it will be inevitable if we put patience always in our midst.

mao sad na ako nabantayan bai. hehehhehe.

i remembered on last year's summit in kuala lumpur of live telecasts from japanese tv channels where they were situated near the vicinity of the KL convention center, but with it on the background. what if these japanese tv channels are going to make the CICC a background with all those dangling wires and that ugly looking post? :D

and also, don't they have plans of cutting (or move) those badly placed trees around the cicc? i am an advocate of environmental protection, however i don't quite get the point if they will do nothing with those trees. synergy between aesthetics and ecology must also be considered especially in the city.

Hi guys. Do you know if Crown Regency Fuente is slated to open as a 5 star hotel? I'm not sure. But I think that the Imperial Palace in Mactan is definitely planned to be a 5-star resort and scheduled to open in late 2007, barring unforeseen circumstances. Speaking of unforeseen circumstances, any news on that threat of litigation by the heirs of the original landowner (who apparently sold that multimillion dollar property in Mactan to Mr. Woolbright for very little money, just a few years ago... darn it. I emphatize with those people)? Pero sayang kaayo pud ug ma-derail nang project tungod niini. But then again, how can anybody blame the Korean developer if he bought the property from Mr. Woolbright fair and square. Ang gulo talaga!

Well, this project is one of only two, much-anticipated new entry to Cebu's luxury hotel group, that is actually now under construction - the second being the Crown Regency Fuente. I might actually be missing some other projects, I don't know. Anyway, I hope that the construction of the Imperial Palace is still ongoing because Cebu desperately needs more luxury accommodations to compete with Phuket and Bali. Hell, it's not even Bali or Phuket anymore... it's Chiang Mai and Mauritius. Chiang Mai now has a Four Seasons Hotel that is frequently mentioned in the "best list" and I have never even heard of this place before.

Josephine Gotianun-Yap, president of FLI parent Filinvest Development Corp. (FDC), said the project was now on the "conceptual stage" and that a soft launch should be conducted within the fourth quarter.

The entire development covered 4,000 lots and was right across the Ayala properties in Cebu, she said.

The Cebu project, she said, was part of the real estate developer's bid to strengthen its presence in areas outside Metro Manila.

Will Butuanon stink at the ASEAN Summit?

I hope Mandaue City and Cebu City will have the resources to prevent the gasping, dying Butuanon River from spreading its trademark stink all the way up to Shangri-La in Mactan and the spankingly new Cebu International Convention Center at the North Reclamation Area in December

I'm hoping because December is still a rainy month, and it is during these times that "phantoms" from among the factories that line the Butuanon river banks dump their wastes into this "massive septic canal" hoping that, unlike their conscience, their filth can be swept clean by rain water.

If I may ask, should Butuanon River and its dying throes be made part of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit agenda?

I agree. Even Shangri-la and Banyan Tree are coming to Chiangmai. Well, if we come to think of it -- Thailand in general is receiving tourists that number to about 10-13 million annually. Just imagine how many of those that go to Chiangmai. That's why in every corner there's a tourist. Plus, the city is safe and the people are more friendly than Bangkok.

Cebu should be on that direction, when Philippines will have 10+ million tourists in the near future -- I don't see the reason why Four Seasons, Ritz and many others not operating a hotel in Cebu.. hehe. That's my little thought. Thanks. :)

...bai, i know that the Gotianun has an ancestral house in that area of Bo. Camputhaw but don't know where exactly. according to previous news,they are going to demolish that house and the surrounding lots they owned to develop into a high rise residential condo and for BPO as what the recent news had specified.... actually, this was also in the news 2 months ago when Gotianun's daughter was a guest speaker of the Intourprenuer... she made her promise come true...!!! they're truly Cebuanos!!! Their current project is the multi-billion SEASCAPES Resort Town in Mactan

SM sets P7B for new malls, upgrades others

Major shopping mall developer and operator SM Prime Holdings, Inc. is will earmark P7 billion next year for the construction of three new malls and expansion of existing ones.

In a talk with reporters on Friday, SM Prime President Hans Sy said the listed company would open malls in Bacolod City, Negros Occidental; Taytay, Rizal; and Muntinlupa City, and the expansion of the 161,562-square meter SM City Cebu and 154,183-square meter SM City Fairview.

The group is also preparing to open new malls in 2008, but Mr. Sy stopped short of identifying their locations.

SM City Cebu is a four-level complex featuring eight cinemas with a total seating capacity of 8,848, food court, fully computerized bowling center, 8,000-square meter amusement center, 2,000-square meter trade hall and a 1,629-capacity car park on a 13.8-hectare site in Cebu Port Center, Barrio Mabolo, Cebu City.

Maybe because of a limited space. I hope their newly bought 4-hectare property in north reclamation area will be developed to be at par with Ayala Center or to any high end mall in the country.

...do you know that Robinson's Cebu was built in 1985 (21 years old already)? It was designed originally as a department store, not a mall (take note) but since the "malling fever" hit the Philippines, they decided to convert it into a mini-mall in year 2002 but unfortunately, due to limited space (considering there is an existing hotel on top of the building - Cebu Midtown Hotel, they cannot expand the building vertically or horizontally) but were only able to redesign & re-construct the interior of the building. so, it's no longer a question why there are not much amenities in the Cebu mall compared with the rest of the Robinson's Mall.

In other development, the Gokongweis have already purchased a lot at the north reclamation area (more or less, half kilometer away from SM City Cebu) ...Come year 2009 to 2010, JG Summit Holdings will re-launch and make their presence felt again in Cebu or perhaps the entire Philippines ....according to the previous news regarding this, it must be a big development that will surprise everyone!!! (i can feel SM City Cebu is shivering....heehheheheh!)

Property-owner seeks partner for retirement village project

A retirement village facility may soon rise in Bantayan Island, Cebu, as hotelier Joe Mabugat plans to develop his 10-hectare property in the area into a retirement village.

Mabugat, who owns Richmond Plaza Hotel in Cebu, and Richmond Tropical Resort in Bantayan Island, said if he is able to find a good partner for the project, he will develop the part of the entire 10-hectare area that is not utilized by the Richmond Tropical Resort.

Mabugat believes that Bantayan Island as a destination is already an attractive place for foreign retirees to live, more so if the needed facilities will be put together in one place, such as leisure and creation facilities, medical facilities, among others.

"I'm trying to maximize my properties," Mabugat said adding that for the planned retirement village project, he needed a partner to develop it.

Establishing an integrated Retirement Village, is one of the best come-ons Cebu could take advantage of, in order to attract foreign nationals, or even the Filipino-American (Balikbayan) to retire here.

Cebuano developers had been urged to immediately set up a facility in Cebu to attract the huge foreign retirees, to retire in the Philippines, specifically Cebu.

In his visit to Cebu, Jacinto Legal, who headed a Trade Mission from Hawaii, said "It is very expensive to retire in the United States the retirees are looking for a good retirement place, for them to maximize their dollars as well as enjoy the weather. Cebu is a very good place for this kind of facility."

The Philippines, according to Legal is one of the potential countries in the world to host the retirees, not only from the United States, but also from Japan, Europe, and other countries.

The dollar's strength against the Philippine peso is also one of the attractions why most foreigners wanted to live in the Philippines, because their money (dollar) could go a very long way.

Reports said that the Medical Tourism is the next phenomenon here in the Philippines, next to call centers.

In Thailand alone, it earned around $280 million from treating 308,000 foreign patients. India on the other hand expects to earn at least $ 1 billion from healthcare tourism by 2012.

Ten percent of patients in European Union (EU) countries are seeking treatment in medical institutions outside the boundaries of their own country.

According to Board of Investments (BOI), a retirement village should be a large tract of land suitable for development that will ensure healthful, safe and environmentally-sound community life.

The village should be under a unified and continuous management.

And it should be readily accessible by air, land or water transport. BOI requires that a retirement village shall not be less than four hectares of contiguous land, and project cost must be at least US$1 million.

Cebu "CeBOOM" Sweeter The Second Time Around

MANILA, Oct. 9 (PNA) - In 1988 then Cebu Gov. Lito Osmena successfully
coined a catchy word "CeBOOM" that transformed the southern city into an
industrial complex that gave Metro Manila a run for their money.

For almost a decade, Cebu City was booming with business industries until
the 1997 economic crisis hit Asia and other parts of the world.

Business had suffered heavily, displacing many workers, but Cebu had
survived the crisis because of the resiliency of the Cebuanos.

Late this year, Cebu will receive a shot in the arm, so to speak, with the
holding of the 12th Summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations
(ASEAN), plus the participation of giant economies in Asia - Japan, China
and South Korea.

The three-day summit from Dec. 11-13, will jumpstart Cebu's full recovery
that could aptly be dubbed as Cebu "CeBOOM" - Part 2.

Foreign Affairs Assistant Secretary Louie Cruz, who is also the ASEAN
director-general for the Philippines, cited the economic fallout Cebu will
get in particular and the Philippines in general before, during and long
after the summit shall have ended.

The coming 12th ASEAN Summit will put Cebu in the center stage when 16 world
leaders and senior ministers will discuss various topics such as the
economy, energy problem and its alternative and the security situation in
Southeast Asia, particularly in fighting terrorism, among others.

Cruz said that the impact of the economy to Cebu will be tremendous in terms
of business and trade.

Weeks before and during the three days summit, local business firms will
have their hands full.

Cruz said Cebu restaurants, hotels, car rental owners, equipment for rent
and other establishments will be the direct beneficiaries.

The construction of the modern P450 million Cebu International Convention
Center where the summit will be held, will become a magnet to many foreign
companies to hold their conferences there.

International conferences are paid for in advance by the sponsoring foreign
companies.

Convention centers are self liquidating projects like the Philippine
International Convention Centers (PICC) in Manila which was built in the
early '70s during the Marcos era. Today PICC continues to earn money.

According to Cruz, international convention centers of China, Thailand,
Singapore, and Malaysia are fully booked all year round.

In fact, Malaysia's new convention center in Kuala Lumpur is booked for the
next six years, he said.

The benefits of the construction of the convention center will "redound to
the Cebuanos," Cruz said.

Cruz said His Eminence Ricardo Cardinal Vidal was briefed on the economic
benefits the Cebuanos would enjoy with the holding of the summit in December
and beyond.

Cebu has direct international flights to Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia,
Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, the Middle East and Europe, is expecting the
inflows of thousands of foreign tourists in the years ahead.

During the "CeBOOM" in the late '80s up to 1997, Cebu was enjoying the
fruits of economic prosperity.

Shipbuilding was born during that period, making Cebu as the capital of
shipbuiding in the Philippines.

Cebu is also an electronic industry complex. Electronics made in Cebu are
exported, making Cebu a progressive place next only to Metro Manila.

Aside from electronics and ship building, Cebu is also known as a leading
jewelry exporter. In 2005, Cebu jewelry exports grew by 46 percent.

Cebu has also been chosen as pilot areas for economic research and business
center that will help fast track investment entry and processes in the
country.

but robinson's cebu is a bummer, worst robinson's mall in the country. (sorry)

... if he was referring to the paint as "bad", is the paint that bad? ...maybe, it is too ironic for him having a small Robinsons mall in a developed city like Cebu....hehhehehhe! or, perhaps, the mall was too small for him and there are no cinemas and other entertainment areas and a good food court etc. as what we usually look for if we are in a mall ....hehhehehhe! (as i said in my previous post, Robinsons Cebu is a 21-year old structure and the design of the building was originally for a department store, not a mall)

... as you can recall from the news 3 months ago, this is part of PNP Program to augment the security of the country of P161.38 million for 204 brand-new police cars. meanwhile, they are sending 200 of these cars to Cebu for Asean Summit but after the activity, they will be distributed to cities and towns in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. i'm sure Cebu will get a good bulk from this.

... this is not including the BMW cars for the Heads of State... according to previous news, they are brand-new cars... some are bullet proof and some are not... after the summit, they will be sold at 10% t0 20% lower than the original price..

CEBU Property Ventures and Development Corp., owner of Asiatown IT Park, expects to increase the park's 5,700 working population with the recent opening of the Engineering Sciences Building of the Primary Industrial Properties Corp. (PIPC) and Skyrise Building of the Skyrise Realty and Development Corp., the company said in a statement.

PIPC is currently completing its second building with 17,611 square meters of leasable office space.

For contact center employees, the park posted an increase of more than 50 percent this year.

AITP administrator Raul Mananquil said the contact center workers, which increased from 1,424 to 2,384, comprise almost 60 percent of the total employees in the park.

“Around P1.4 billion in annual employee’s compensation will go to the local economy of Cebu by the end of 2006, not to mention the income tax component generated out of the employees' wages,” Mananquil said.

The two newly built buildings are fully occupied. The Engineering Sciences Building has eTelecare, Dash Engineering, SPI Technologies and a ground level retail strip.

The Skyrise building houses PeopleSupport, Epson, Astro Ship, Info Weapons, Qualfon International, and Microsoft.

PeopleSupport, one of the country's pioneering contact centers, needs 1,600 seats for its expansion.
Mexico-based Qualfon International, which opened last June, will exclusively service Tracfone Wireless Inc., a US-based cellphone company with about seven million customers.
