New dwarf buffalo discovered by chance in the Philippines
First new fossil mammal from the Philippines in 50 years

EurekALert.com (http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2006-10/fm-ndb100606.php)

CHICAGO--Almost 50 years ago, Michael Armas, a mining engineer from the central Philippines, discovered some fossils in a tunnel he was excavating while exploring for phosphate. Forty years later, Dr. Hamilcar Intengan, a friend of his who now lives in Chicago, recognized the importance of the bones and donated them to The Field Museum.

If not for the attention and foresight of these two individuals, science might never have documented what has turned out to be an extremely unusual species of dwarf water buffalo, now extinct.

The new species, described in the October issue of the Journal of Mammalogy, has been named Bubalus cebuensis (BOO-buh-luhs seh-boo-EN-sis) after the Philippine island of Cebu, where it was found. Its most distinctive feature is its small size. While large domestic water buffalo stand six feet at the shoulder and can weigh up to 2,000 pounds, B. cebuensis would have stood only two-and-one-half feet and weighed about 350 pounds.

B. cebuensis, which evolved from a large-sized continental ancestor to dwarf size in the oceanic Philippines, is the first well-supported example of "island dwarfing" among cattle and their relatives.

"Natural selection can produce dramatic body-size changes. On islands where there is limited food and a small population, large mammals often evolve to much smaller size," said Darin Croft, lead author of the study and a professor of anatomy at Case Western Reserve University.

Female martial arts expert foils snatch try; 2 nabbed
By Chris Ligan
Cebu Daily News
Last updated 12:03pm (Mla time) 10/16/2006

Two men tried to snatch the cellular phone of a woman who was waiting for a jeepney ride at the Capitol Site in Cebu City. But they failed to get the phone and received a heavy beating instead.

The victim - Juvelyn Rabaca - turned out to be a martial arts expert who fought back at the two suspects identified as Dennis Dinopol, 25, of Sitio Caimito, Labangon, Cebu City, and Brigido Caburnay, 28, of Sitio Kapakulan, Barangay Tisa, Cebu City.

The two were arrested after a barangay tanod and a Sangguniang Kabataan councilor helped Rabaca subdue the suspects.

Rabaca told Fuente policemen that she was waiting for a jeepney ride in Osmeña Boulevard, Barangay Capitol Site, Cebu City about 10 p.m. when two men on board a motorcycle stopped in front of her. The back rider suddenly grabbed her cellphone.

Rabaca refused to let go of the cellphone and fought back at the snatcher, using her martial arts expertise. The commotion attracted the attention of SK Councilor Kate Noel Wenceslao, son of Sambag II barangay Captain Noel Wenceslao, and barangay tanod Richard Ong, who were on their way home from a seminar in the area.

Wenceslao and Ong, who were also trained in martial arts, helped Rabaca, said barangay Captain Wenceslao.

"Maayo na lang way armas ang mga snatcher (it was fortunate that the snatchers were not armed)," Wenceslao said.

Fuente police investigators said they believed that the suspects were high on drugs because their eyes were red and they acted like they were drunk but did not smell of liquor.

I would like to express my dismay over your news report regarding the Cebu International Convention Center, which was aired yesterday during your primetime news program, TV Patrol World. The said report stated that the CICC wont be completed on time, "possibleng hindi matapos ang construction sa CICC" a statement that is an insult not only to the project proponents but to all Cebuanos, since it is a known fact (which can be attested to by the news report aired at the local TV Patrol earlier this afternoon) that the CICC is only a few steps towards completion (96% complete), and is still ahead of the mid-November deadline. The statement "ito pa lang ang itsura ng istraktura ngayon", is indeed very inaccurate, owing to the fact that the file video shown was at least 2 weeks old. And to add insult to injury, the reporter, Ms. Karen Davila could be quoted to have said "malaki na ang nagastos ng PILIPINAS sa proyektong ito", a big slap on the face to all Cebuanos, since the National Government didnt spend a single centavo for the construction of the CICC. The Provincial Government of Cebu deserves the credit for the achievement of this project, which is on the way towards completion.

If your network still value RESPONSIBLE JOURNALISM, then I suggest that your researchers should do a better job. TV Patrol World is seen worldwide, and your inaccurate news report has casted more doubt on the CICC project, and has done unreparable damage on the credibility and image of Cebu...

As a Cebuano, in behalf of my people, I demand an on-air apology!

You know what, I think ABS-CBN TV Patrol World has lost its credibility long before. Because of its one-sided and unbalance reporting, Ms. Karen Davila was accused by Ms. Susan Roces to be biased and not a good and credible journalist. Ms. Davila made her apology to the wife of the late Mr. Poe.

I think the Manila reporters are just riding on the issue that "PROMDI" like us can't handle anything better than Manileños, which is not the case. We are way...way...BETTER THAN THEM! We never relied on the resources of the National Government but we still made Cebu what it is now because of the passion and vision of our political leaders like Gov. Gwen Garcia, Mayor Tom Osmeña, et. al. They are the visionaries of Cebu and we are thankful for them. They help make and shape Cebu to be an attractive place to do business and leisure.

We do not mind those in IMPERIAL MANILA as they could do nothing but chaos and instability. All they do is complain about politics instead of making the country look good. If we think good about our country then we can be positive about ourselves and eventually make our country "GREAT" again like the old times.

Cebu will become the center of attention this December 2006 and onwards as more and more investments will start pouring in Cebu. Business establishments in Manila will be relocating here in Cebu because of the Cebuano culture. We simply do not engage in politics. Business as usual in Cebu. We are entrepreneurs as Cebu has produced countless successful Cebuano entrepreneurs and best entertainers in the country today.

In fairness lang sad to Ms. Davila, they just read the teleprompter. So I think it would be unfair to blame Ms. Davila, it's those who prepared the teleprompter and the field reporter (Mr. Henson) who submitted his report to the staff and crew of TV Patrol World who are to be blamed.

It's good though that SSC Cebu forumers have connections to Mr. Leo Lastimosa so that he himself may divert our concerns to their news and current affairs chief, Ms. Maria Ressa

^^ Cebu is the Fastest Booming Big Economy in the Philippines regardless of what people in Manila say. I'm really happy that Cebu, Cagayan de Oro, Davao, Iloilo, Bacolod & other cities outside Luzon are doing well despite the obvious practical negligence of Imperial Manila.

The bad media report on Cebu is just one case where Manilenos discredit efforts outside Luzon. The repeated bad press on ISOLATED bombings in Mindanao is another case where they tarnish the image of the south as a whole. I mean cities like CDO, Davao, Zamboanga, Gensan & Butuan are already working their butts of to attract more investments & suddenly Media outfits in Manila damage those efforts in a swing.

I know that if it weren't for the isolated terrorism issue of Mindanao & apparent diversion of funds from the South to Luzon, the VisMin area would be more progressive than Luzon since it is less frequented by Typhoons & had less volcanic eruptions.

Or better yet, replace the commercial orientation that media particularly broadcast media is oriented to. Its better to have news thats not tainted or motivated by the drive for ratings but based on investigative journalism. that is why i noticed that the big networks are always scared to feature news that would often be critical of personalities whether on the administration or opposition or people not even in politics but people who have a high status in society.

Forgive me if i'm OT too.
I think they are doing that in Magandang Umaga Pilipinas where a corresspondent from Baguio, Cebu and Davao reports the "Provincial News" but more on "ronda" or bullet news lang sa dyaryo. It is a very gargantuan task for media to bridge the centers.

I was hoping that ABSCBN was living up to its motto: "Sabay Tayo Pilipinas!" but it seemed that RNG has something missing that cannot bridge the gap between Imperial Manila and the Regions.

News was against Mindanao, now they're eyeing on Cebu.
Sensationalist journalism is a big no no in media ethics.

City Lights condo units post positive sales record
By Ehda M. Dagooc
The Freeman 10/18/2006

The robust demand for high-end condominium units in Cebu resulted to positive sales performance of the 216 units of City Lights Gardens, which is currently under construction.

Barely a year since the P1.3 billion City Lights phase 2 was launched, 50 percent of the units have already been disposed, said Anita Go Blanco, City Lights Gardens sales and marketing manager in an interview yesterday.

Developed by Singaporean-led Syntech Properties, Inc. the additional two towers, which have a total of 216 chic condominium units targeted to be finished by 2008.

According to Blanco, the company has noted a mixed buyer profiles that includes huge number of foreigners, balikbayan-retirees, and local investors.

The additional 20-story twin towers will complete the Syntech Properties Inc., project in Cebu which started in 1997 with the establishment of the first two towers in phase 1 that have a total of 144 condominium units.

Blanco said the construction of the two towers is now moving up, the first tower is now on 30 percent completion. The construction of second tower will start by January next year.

Because of the properties' strategic location in Nivel Hills, which provides a total view of Cebu, and its established name in the condominium development, some buyers even bought units without even visiting the location.

A good number of Japanese nationals are now going back to invest and buy good condominium products in Cebu, Blanco said.

Filipino dollar earners, aside from the balikbayans who wanted to retire here, are also one of the growing markets for the projects. Blanco said the company has introduced an easy payment terms in partnership with some banks like BPI, to provide easy payment facilities for overseas Filipino buyers.

Syntech Properties had invested at least P2.6 billion for the creation of the four towers, situated in a four-hectare property owned by its Cebuano partner located up in the Hills of Nivel.

Today, the company will be holding an exclusive Mid-Autumn Festival called Moon Cake at City Lights, in cooperation with Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) to invite the discriminating preferred clients of the bank to see the update of the project.

Economists earlier projected that the demand for condominium units in Cebu is expected to double in the next few years, because of the limited flat lands in Cebu, which makes flat residential developments more expensive.

The charm of Cebu as leisure and business destination is also one of the few attractions, why both foreign and local investors would want to own a property here.

Lexmark ‘confident’ about skills of IT grads in Cebu
AN INTERNATIONAL information technology (IT) company sees “a lot” of potential in IT graduates in Cebu and in the entire country.

While Lexmark Research and Development Corp. (LRDC) faces the challenge of recruiting the “best of the best” in today’s IT graduates, company president and chief executive officer Stan Combs said he is optimistic Cebu can produce world class employees who can meet international standards.

“The company has seen a lot of potential in the Philippines, especially in Cebu, with regard to the human resource sector, which is also why the company it is expanding its operations,” he said.

He said LRDC will be hiring more people in Cebu for positions that will be created with the expansion.

LRDC has invested about P2.4 billion for the construction of two new buildings for its offices at the Cebu Business Park.

Long stay

Combs said the investment is an indication that LRDC intends to stay longer, which will spell more employment opportunities for Cebuano programmers, engineers, finance managers and accountants in the long run.

Combs expressed confidence that the skills of its employees in Cebu would be able to bring Lexmark on top of the competition in the printer market.

He said Cebu’s strategic location, the people’s English proficiency, good education, a receptive government, transportation access and skilled work force were among the major considerations of LRDC when it decided to establish operations in the city in 1991.

LRDC has operations in the United States and India.

According to Combs, the seven-floor LRDC building, whose construction is expected to be completed by the middle of next year, will house several offices and high technology development laboratories.

The second LRDC building, with 22 floors, will house a combination of offices, laboratories and parking spaces. It is set to be finished by the end of 2008. (MMM) Source (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/ceb/2006/10/18/bus/lexmark.confident.about.skills.of.it.grads.in.cebu.html)..

4,000 cab drivers to attend seminar
Sun-Star Online
Wednesday, October 18, 2006

SOME 4,000 taxi drivers in Cebu are set to undergo a seminar to get themselves ready for the thousands of foreigners who will be coming to Cebu for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) summit in December.

A total of 1,274 hotel rooms in Cebu have already been booked by foreign businessmen and journalists who will attend the gathering.

Department of Tourism (DOT) Undersecretary Phineas Alburo said the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has approved the franchises for 200 additional sedans and air-conditioned buses to ensure that there will be enough taxis and buses during the summit on Dec. 11-14.

He said that while the transportation for the heads of state and their official delegation is already arranged, the members of the international media and other foreign visitors will surely avail themselves of public transportation during their stay in Cebu.

Alburo, head of the transportation and accommodation committees of the Cebu organizing committee for the summit, discussed their preparations in yesterday’s 888 News Forum at the Parklane Hotel.

The DOT and the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (Tesda), in coordination with LTFRB, have already trained 2,000 taxi drivers, so far, on values, hygiene, basic courtesy and road regulations.

DOT was recently told that taxi drivers in Cebu have reached 6,000 but for now their available budget for the seminar is good only for 4,000 individuals.

Alburo said the taxi operators will be required to let their drivers wear uniforms and its implementation will start during the summit.

Those who have completed the government-sponsored seminar will be issued a certification and only those who have such certifications will be allowed to pick up passengers in hotels.

Deal

Alburo said they will also try to negotiate with the management of shopping centers so the same arrangement can be implemented in the malls.

This will be a continuing program for cab drivers that will be implemented in Cebu even after the summit, “as a service to the Cebuanos and the Filipinos.”

Alburo said they even intend to replicate the program in the other parts of the country as well.

They are also preparing a database of the taxi drivers and a copy will be given to the summit’s security group.

This way, it would be easy to trace and track down drivers reported to have duped or tried to dupe passengers, said Alburo.
The tourism official clarified that the seminar, including the snacks, is given for free.

However, Alburo explained that there were previous instances where the participants were asked to pay for the snacks served because, at that time, their budget had not yet been released.

He assured, though, that they will be reimbursed later for their payments upon presentation of receipts.

They made an agreement with the taxicab drivers and operators’ association that only those units in better shape and condition will be fielded, at least for the duration of the summit.

As for the accommodation, Alburo said 699 hotel rooms have confirmed reservations for foreign journalists.

Some 575 hotel rooms got confirmed bookings for private businessmen who will also be joining the Asean business and investment summit from Dec. 7 to 10.

These consist of various room accommodations from de luxe, AAA, first class and unclassified hotels in Cebu City and Lapu-Lapu City.

Rooms

Alburo said there are still 2,474 available rooms and even if 2,000 rooms will be taken by the heads of state and their official delegation, there will still be more than 400 available rooms.

He said they have set a cut-off date on Oct. 31 for hotel bookings and they have informed the foreign embassies about this.

DOT also has 150 student volunteers and four of them will be assigned to man the assistance desks in 37 hotels and to attend to the needs of the foreign visitors.

“Oftentimes, small things matter the most,” said Alburo.

DOT is also asking six travel agencies to prepare tour packages.

Meanwhile, Cebu City Hall information officer Nagiel Bañacia said they have two teams that will conduct sanitary and building inspections on all the hotels, restaurants, bars and nightspots in the city starting next week.

City Hall wants to ensure that establishments comply with all the requirements for sanitation and building safety. (ROV)

Syntech Properties had invested at least P2.6 billion for the creation of the four towers, situated in a four-hectare property owned by its Cebuano partner located up in the Hills of Nivel..........

BMWs, Hondas stars of ASEAN meet

Top vehicle makers BMW and Honda turned over nearly 100 luxury cars to the government for use in the 12th Asean Leaders’ Summit in Cebu City in December.

The symbolic turnover was held yesterday at the Kalayaan Hall grounds at Malacañang. Receiving some of the 50 BMW 7 Series and 5 Series and 41 Honda Accords were Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto Romulo and Ambassador Marciano Paynor, secretary general of the summit’s National Organizing Committee.

Partially state-owned Petron will supply the fuel for the cars.

The summit will be held from December 11-13, during which heads of state from Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, plus heads of delegation from six other countries — China, Japan, South Korea, India, Australia and New Zealand — will use the vehicles.

The BMW 5 series is priced at around P4 million per unit while the 7 series costs over P7 million each. The Honda Accord costs some P1.5 million each.

BMW Philippines president Dr. Joerg Breuer presented replicas of the luxury car to the officials. He said BMW Philippines will also handle logistical and maintenance support.

"BMW Philippines is honored to support the Republic of the Philippines in making the 12th Asean Summit a success for the country and a source of pride for its people," Breuer said.

Officials said BMW Philippines and the Presidential Security Group will provide special training for the drivers of the limousines.

Officials said the vehicles will later be sold with special discounts after the summit.

Common Sanitary Landfill for Metro Cebu
Renato V. Osmeña

As the gross domestic product of Cebu grows, so does one of its major byproduct — garbage.

Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia and mayors of component cities of Metro Cebu need to consider today the problem of solid waste disposal. Metro Cebu must locate a sanitary landfill that could last for 50 years.

Areas near the Cebu City Inayawan Sanitary Landfill has become highly urbanized with the establishment of businesses at the South Road Properties, which is adjacent to the garbage disposal facility.

But the construction of a landfill in each city and municipality in Metro Cebu would cause environmental problems. It is important that the sanitary landfill be properly designed and managed or it could degenerate into an open dump.

The supposed-to-be sanitary landfill for the entire Metro Cebu is more like an open dump because it is unsightly, breeds disease-carrying pests, generates foul odor that cause air pollution when wastes are burned and could result in possible contamination of groundwater and surface water through leaching.

A sanitary landfill is a waste disposal site that is meant to minimize water pollution from runoff and leaching. Wastes are spread in thin layers, compacted and covered with soil to prevent it from becoming an eyesore and to minimize pests, disease, foul smell and water pollution.

An open dump, on the other hand, is a land disposal site where solid and liquid wastes are deposited and left uncovered, with little or no regard for control of scavengers, aesthetic, disease, and air and water pollution.

A common sanitary landfill for Metro Cebu, equipped with a resource recovery plant, is the most logical thing to implement.

What is solid waste? Solid waste is any useless unwanted or discarded material. It is yesterday’s newspaper and junk mail, dinner table scraps, raked leaves and grass clipping, nonreturnable bottles and cans, worn-out appliances and furniture, abandoned cars, animal manure, crop residue, food processing wastes, sewage sludge from waste treatment plant, fly ash from coal power plants, mining and industrial wastes and an array of other cast-off materials.

A common sanitary landfill for Metro Cebu has many advantages over existing dumpsites. Metro Cebu — which includes Naga, Minglanilla, Talisay City, Cebu City, Cordova, Lapu-Lapu City, Mandaue City, Consolacion, Liloan and Compostela — will, in a decade, become highly urbanized that each of their landfill could no longer accommodate solid wastes.

If properly designed and managed, a sanitary landfill can minimize pest population, disease, air pollution and water pollution problems. Methane gas produced by waste decomposition can be used as a fuel.

By itself, solid waste management is a multi-million peso industry.

There is a need to enact an enabling law to create the Metro Cebu Solid Waste Disposal Authority. The creation of the authority plays a very important role in the effective management of the sanitary landfill operation.

A centralized hauling operation of wastes by the authority, through direct coordination with each barangay, would ensure maximum waste collection efficiency.

The authority could eventually cover the entire island of Cebu.

^^

Of course because he was comparing the CICC with his CDU project. The CDU is very, very big tapos construction of it is not round the clock.

Aside from that, CDU is completely made of concrete -- hollow blocks to be exact whereas the CICC is just structural steel.

In fact, everytime I pass by at CDU, it seems that there is no construction activity there compared, of course, with the CICC.

Marco Polo Plaza eyes conventions
By Ehda M. Dagooc
The Freeman 10/19/2006

Things are looking bright for the newly opened Marco Polo Plaza in Cebu, which is now hitting an average occupancy rate of 50 percent in the last five months since its opening last April.

"Opening a hotel is like a roller coaster ride. It takes a while to stabilize the business," said Marco Polo Plaza general manager Hans R. Hauri.

He said the 50 percent occupancy rate is a good indication for the hotel, considering that it has been in operation for only five months. He added that this has also been attained despite the opening of another hotel - Cebu Parklane International, which has increased the available rooms in Cebu by 53 percent.

Hotel bookings are however expected to be at a high with the ASEAN Summit this December. Bookings are once again expected to return to normal after the Sinulog celebration in January.

Hauri said that in order to maintain their pace, they are aggressively capturing the bookings of business executives.

The 24-story Marco Polo Plaza has a total of 329 rooms and is looking at penetrating the Meeting, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibition (MICE) market.

The owner of Marco Polo Plaza, Federal Land Inc., believes that Cebu is not short of hotel rooms in the city, but in the resort.

Rey Villar, president of Federal Land Inc., said the need for room accommodation for city hotels is only seasonal.

Federal Land Inc., which is the real estate development arm of Metrobank, has spent close to a billion pesos to renovate the old hotel facility, formerly known as Cebu Plaza Hotel.

According to Villar, the company is expected to get the Return of Investment (ROI) in seven to nine years of operation.

Recently, the hotel opened its Continental Club at the top floor of the hotel, dedicated to providing personalized service, high standards of executive floor accommodation and hospitality for the seasoned business travelers.

The Continental Club features superlative accommodations with a total of 101 guest rooms and suites, comprising 58 Mountain View rooms, 23 Sea View Rooms, five Executive Suites, a Honeymoon Suite, and the Marco Polo Suite and the Presidential Suite.

^ Good for Marco Polo Plaza. Maintaining a 50% occupancy is good enough. I'm wondering how is Marco Polo in Davao doing occupancy rate wise? Of course this figure is somewhat confidential and only inside staff knows. But judging from the website photos, the Marco Polo in Cebu sure looks more grand and elegant (plus it looks more luxurious).

Presidential Management Staff now headed by Cebu’s Remonde
Sun-Star Online
October 19, 2006

FORMER radio dyLA station general manager Cerge Remonde was named head of the Presidential Management Staff (PMS), as announced yesterday by Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita.

Remonde is also Government Media Group secretary and lead convenor of the National Anti-Poverty Commission before his new appointment.

He described his job as monitoring the implementation of orders, directives and policies of President Arroyo.

“In a sense, a PMS chief is like a housekeeper of the presidency,” Remonde said, adding that the one who holds this position is like a “chief alalay” of the president in terms of managing Malacañang affairs.

When asked if he will always accompany President Arroyo whenever she is in Cebu, Remonde said that even without his presence in the Visayas, Malou Frostrum, a Cebuano who heads the Office of Regional Concerns, is doing her job well.

Remonde said in a radio interview that the PMS is one of the most professional organizations not only in the Office of the President but in the entire executive department.

“Let us move the country forward. Cebu continues to be a source of inspiration nationally and we should be very proud of that especially with the Asean summit in December, the first to be held outside Metro Manila,” Remonde said. (EOB)

Butch I have very nice views of Cebu City taken from that "mountain" near our subdivision.

Remember I said before that it's impossible for one to build a house there? Well, guess what I went to the peak of that mountain just a while ago and I was wrong! There's a vast track of flat land overlooking the city (180 degrees view) at the peak waiting to be developed.

I'll post the photos later on, I'm still resizing them.

Butch, here are some outstanding views for you.

Location: Barangay Guadalupe, Cebu City
Nearest/Prominent Landmark: Our Lady of Guadalupe Church (Archdiocesan Shrine)

The mountain is mostly made up of limestone.

A perfect spot to build a home. I'm not sure though if somebody already owns this piece of land. There was nobody whom I can ask. (Note: There are already water pipes in this area, there's also a portion of it that is fenced).

180 degrees view of Cebu City. From Asiatown IT Park at the extreme left, to the South Road Properties (SRP) at the extreme right. (Note: The camera had a limited angle of view, hehe. But the eyes don't!)

A view of the Winland Towers Condominiums at Brgy. Capitol area.

I think this is Maria Luisa (South). Notice the view of the South Road Properties (SRP).

Jimbu, those photos were taken on a mountain adjacent to our subdivision. It's undeveloped actually. I mentioned about it to Butch before that the said mountain will have no chance of being developed because of the very steep cliff beside it, but I was wrong. There's a vast track of flat land at the top of it and I guess it really offers a perfect spot to build a house.

Problema lang ang dalan. You really have to build your own road all the way down.

Nope it's not. It's actually too far from Nivel Hills where that lovers' lane was. It's just an effect of the camera zoom that makes it look near to it.

The Cebu Provincial Jail is actually nearer to Boys Scouts Camp/Camp Marina. It's located in Brgy. Kalunasan.

Take note that when this facility was still being built, there were still no houses, apartments, and subdivisions below it. The provincial government should have acquired the entire mountain lot so that they can totally secure the jail facility.

... piece of advice, the best way to promote your bar (but not mine...hehhehe!) is to advertise it on a center spread of a national paper ...i'm sure it reaches to a wider audience (hehe.....)

...anyways and highways, AQUARIUM reminds me of the defunct MI VIDA at Ayala Food & Entertainment Center which was famous for "ledge dancing". that restobar was doing well, unfortunately, it was shut down by the City Hall for failing to pay amusement taxes... i guess the main cause was mismanagement....

not to bring any air of negativity and pessimism over here, but i just have this feeling that something might go wrong during the ASEAN and the Sinulog...news of those terrorist freaks going loose around the country is making me feel uneasy...i dont know, but i guess that the authorities should do something to make people feel more secure and at ease, considering the current security of cebu (despite the so-called increased police visibility) i still feel a bit paranoid...

i really hope that those involved in securing the event would do everything in their power to get their job done and not allow any lapses in security to ruin it...it would make me feel much more better than seeing the CICC completed, if i'd see the dead bodies of those terrorist bombers on TV...

and as for us ordinary citizens, i suggest that we would do our part, and cooperate with the proposal to 'vacate' cebu during the summit (or refrain from going around unnecesarily) so that potential trouble makers would be much easier to spot...

the ASEAN summit could make or break or Cebu...

Malaysia Airlines to double number of flights bet. Cebu, Kuala Lumpur

MALAYSIA’S flag carrier announced its plan to increase its flights between Cebu and Kuala Lumpur, from twice to four times a week.

Transnational Aero Corp. (TAC) general manager Rene Philip Banzon said Malaysia Airlines is confident about its passenger share despite the growing number of budget airlines servicing Manila and other Asian countries, including Malaysia.

TAC is the Malaysia Airlines’ general sales agent in the Visayas and Mindanao.

Banzon said there are passengers who remain to be particular about getting in-flight services provided by Malaysia Airlines and other leading carriers.

“(Besides) low-cost carriers are mostly in Manila, and not in Cebu,” Banzon said during a press conference last Thursday at Table 7.

Malaysia Airlines will fly between Cebu and Kuala Lumpur every Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday starting Oct. 30.

“We felt that we need to add the frequencies to improve our product and for our passengers to have more choices on the number of flights,” Banzon said.

He said daily flights from Cebu to Malaysia is “in the pipelines,” but it will depend on the profitability of the four-a-week flight service.

Also, Malaysia Airlines has not yet reached a formal understanding with Philippine Airlines regarding the former’s plan to have daily flights between Cebu and Kuala Lumpur, he said.

In principle

“This has only been approved in principle during talks held here with Philippine Airlines as they did not object but nothing formal as of the meantime,” he said.

Malaysia Airlines expects an increase in both inbound and outbound traffic with its decision to have more flights between Cebu and Kuala Lumpur.

“Around 70 percent of the passenger volume will be a combination of immigrants, those who want leisure trips, business trips and overseas Filipino workers,” Banzon said.

As Cebu is positioning itself as a shopping hub and tourism destination in Asia, Banzon said the company is targeting traffic coming from Europe, Australia and Malaysia.

Malaysia Airlines first took off from Cebu in Oct. 29, 1993, operating a B737-300 series twice a week.

According to Banzon, Malaysia Airlines reported a 600-percent growth in sales revenues since 1998. The carrier flies to over 100 destinations in six continents. BBRC, CCPO get notices on lots

A NOTICE to vacate has not been drafted yet but the Capitol has sent the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) a notice stating that a portion of the lot it is occupying belongs to the Cebu Provincial Government.

A similar notice was sent to the Bagong Buhay Rehabilitation Center (BBRC), which stands on a Province-owned prime property in Barangay Lahug, Cebu City.

CCPO Director Melvin Gayotin and BBRC Warden Supt. Efren Nemeño met with the Capitol’s Economic Enterprise Council yesterday to discuss the matter.

The economic council was created to find better use for Capitol properties so the Province can earn more.

In a brief discussion with Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia on his way out of the Capitol, Gayotin said half of Camp Sotero Cabahug is affected by Capitol’s claim.

The Province is claiming ownership of some 6,000 square meters within the police camp, which is 20 meters inward from Gorordo Avenue.

Documents

Gayotin said the camp’s “tenant units” will be affected, including the PNP Crime Laboratory, the Traffic Management Group and the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group.

Gayotin told the governor that he does not know how the CCPO got hold of the lot they are occupying now, but they compared documents with Capitol yesterday to find out the details.

A second meeting is scheduled to extensively discuss the issue.

Garcia told reporters that they called CCPO and BBRC officials to a meeting to find out what their plans are considering that they are occupying Capitol lots.

Capitol is currently working to recover its properties in Cebu City.

Another government office that stands to be affected by the move is the Armed Forces of the Philippines, whose officials already agreed to return the 80-hectare Camp Lapu-Lapu to the Provincial Government.

The Population Commission, the Technical Education Skills Authority and others were also told to vacate the lots they are occupying.

Just recently, the Department of Public Works and Highways has also expressed their willingness to move out of the Province-owned lot near the Capitol compound.

Of the recovered properties, the Province already bid out at least two hectares in Barangay Banilad for a multi-use development project worth P1.2 billion. (JPM) here (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/ceb/2006/10/20/news/bbrc.ccpo.get.notices.on.lots.html)

Taft Property up w/ mangrove propagule planting on Oct. 28
The Freeman 10/20/2006

Realizing the importance of mangrove reforestation, chief executive officer and president of Taft Property Jack Gaisano will initiate a mangrove propagate planting in Dalaguete on October 28, Saturday.

A press statement read, "recognized by the local government of Dalaguete as wanting of a fish sanctuary, the 1.5-hectare coast of Obong was recommended as the best site for the planting of 5,000 propagules."

This civic activity, successful as it was, would never have been fulfilled without the all-out support and active participation of Dalaguete mayor Ronald Allan Cesante, town officials and townfolks.

Encouraged by the success of the initial mangrove planting, Taft Property rolls up its sleeves again on the same endeavor as a follow-through of last year's "Kalambuan sa Katunggan, Kalambuan sa Katilingban" project. This time, it aims for bigger impact and deeper awareness of coastal resource protection.

Expected to participate on the 28th are Taft and Dalaguete municipal government officials, Department of Environment and Natural Resources and Community Environment and Natural Resources Office personnel, Coastal Marine Management, Coastal Conservation and Education Foundation, Department of Agriculture, the youth sector, TAFT affiliates, the academe, and other members of the private sector of Cebu city.

This endeavor is inspired by then Taft Property sales and marketing manager Marivic - MEEVSecretaria.

[B]mao diay gagmay ang mga pinoy[B]...:naughty:   joke...

Hello All!

Mayor Osmena's giving a deadline to all these utility firms to clean up their spaghetti wires thats tangling and dangling in our thoroughfares is a good move. These is not only an eyesore for Cebu tourist and it also poses danger to passersby. I would even suggest that Mayor Osmena allow these firms to study the possiblity of a "wireless streets" meaning that wires be hidden underground just like whats been done in Japan and in the US. I think Cebu would look more nicer. But I doubt these takes lot of political will considering making and placing post in the streets is business. For sure mga dakong negosyante ni ang mamuhatay ni-ini.

What are these officials afraid of anyway. Cguro they wont get election contributions when election period comes but the brighter side of things is that they are commended for such endeavor and bisag wala kay kwarta and Cebuanos are smart voters for sure mo daug man ghapon kay ang lantawon nato kay ang ka-ayuhan man sa Sugbo pud.

Anyway, guys patabang ko kay DOT7 refuse to accredit my website coz daghan kuno wrong information that can mislead tourist. Hollywood Film Being Edited in Cebu

(9 October 2006) - Exciting things are shaping inside the editing suites of Bigfoot Entertainment as the director and editor of the newly shot film " Within " recently flew to Cebu to begin the editing of the independent feature.

"Within" is produced in tandem by FA Productions and Bigfoot Entertainment . Slated for theatrical release in summer 2007, " Within" is about a nine-year old child who, along with her father, moves to a small town to escape a terrifying past. There she befriends a girl her age. However all doesn't go well when she discovers that her new-found friend may hold a dark secret of her own. http://www.bigfootentertainment.com/News/NewsInside/images/068b.jpg

"Within" Director Hanelle Culpepper and Editor Tirsa Hackshaw flew in all the way from Los Angeles to begin the post production work on the psychological and supernatural thriller. " Within" marks the feature directorial debut of Culpepper. Culpepper, an award-winning writer/director, has directed episodic television, including Discovery Channel's " Guilty or Innocent" in 2005, as well as worked with award-winning Screenwriter Callie Khouri ("Thelma and Louise") on her directorial feature, "Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood".

Hackshaw ("The Taming of the Small" , "American Family" , "Edison") has worked with high-profile names including Bryan Singer, Joel Silver, Tom DeSanto and many others. Also a versatile screenwriter, she has written 5 feature screenplays, several short stories, and published the popular underground comic book series "K.I. - Killer Instinct" , which she has also adapted into a complete trilogy for the big screen.

"Editing Within in Cebu is going to be a thrilling process," Hackshaw explains. "Bigfoot Entertainment has everything we'll be needing to make the film the best it could possibly be, with palm trees. What more could you ask for?"

Everything from color correction, audio balancing, and special effects will be done at Bigfoot Entertainment's 20,000 sq. m. beachfront facility.

While in Cebu, both Culpepper and Hackshaw will also be conducting lectures on aspects of moviemaking to aspiring filmmakers. Culpepper's lecture will focus on the director's creative process while Hackshaw will discuss the magic of editing films.

Hello All!
Anyway, guys patabang ko kay DOT7 refuse to accredit my website coz daghan kuno wrong information that can mislead tourist. If you have time please let me know your feedback sa content, for sure dili ni nako imbento lang ang content coz I got them from textbooks, wikipedia and other cebu websites even the government websites. Visit my site www.cebutravelsite.com. I have installed the flash animation so medyo nindot na ang pics. Pasalamat ko sa mga flkr contributors sa pics.
Ayo-ayo mo! Mabuhay ang Sugbo! Host of the 2006 ASEAN Summit.

Bai try to coordinate nalang with DOT kung unsay mga sayop nga gusto nila i-correct. I think they will help naman sad siguro.

Check out Metro Cebu's Population on the About Cebu Section. It's only 152,508. Edit also Fort San Pedro because it wasn't erected in 1965, hehehe.. Also I think Warwick Barracks was somewhere near Freedom Park or Carbon Market but I'm not sure sad..

Try also to check the How To Get To Cebu section. Try to confirm if there is a Mandarin Airlines and Korean Air that flies to Cebu. Based on my knowledge (from everyday news), I think these airlines do not fly to Cebu. Wikipedia is not reliable man gud because anybody can just edit the articles there..

Basta just ask help lang from DOT. At least para ma-accredit imo website. :)

Cebu, PHILIPPINES (11 October 2006) – The International Academy of Film and Television (IAFT) presents lectures on Directing and Editing by Hollywood filmmakers on October 20 and 27, respectively, at the IAFT campus in Mactan, Cebu.

Writer/Director Hanelle Culpepper will discuss Preparing for Your Film: The Director’s Creative Process – the artistic and creative process that precedes every film shoot. This lecture covers the Script Phase that consists of: (1) Breaking down the script; (2) Discovering the theme; and, (3) Prep for Actors. Also covered is the Visualization Phase that is made of research, sketchbooks and sharing with creative collaborators.

Preparing for Your Film: The Director’s Creative Process by Hanelle Culpepper is set on October 20, 2006, 9:00am – 12:00nn at the IAFT Actor’s Studio. Deadline for registration is October 18, 2006.

Film Editor/Screenwriter Tirsa Hackshaw will focus on the topic Beyond the Cutting: An Exploration of the Definition and Ever-Changing Role of the Film Editor. Hackshaw puts the emotional value to an often structured craft as she tackles the following points of discussion: explaining the invisible; finding the heartbeat; learn to cheat, cheat, cheat; protecting the story (the Editor as the ultimate Diplomat); you’re not done until they unplug the machine; no such thing as “temp” anymore (the Editor as VFX, MX, SFX Liaison); don’t expect a thank-you card; a life-long learning process; and, the best film bootcamp.

Beyond the Cutting: An Exploration of the Definition and Ever-Changing Role of the Film Editor by Tirsa Hackshaw is set on October 27, 2006, 9:00 – 11:00am at the IAFT Computer Lab. Deadline for registration is October 25, 2006.

Culpepper and Hackshaw come together for a joint lecture on the Director – Editor Collaborative Relationship. This lecture tackles the Editor – Director collaboration as they “rewrite” the story in the post-production stage. Taking place at the IAFT Acting Studio on November 10, 2006, 9:00am – 12:00nn, the Director – Editor Collaborative Relationship covers: selecting your collaborator, production/dailies, editor’s assembly, director’s cut and after the director’s cut.

These three lectures are priced at Php500 or Php300 for students with IDs.

Culpepper is an award-winning writer/director who has directed episodic television including Discovery Channel’s Guilty or Innocent in 2005. She has also worked with award-winning Screenwriter Callie Khouri (Thelma and Louise) on her directorial feature, Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood.

Hackshaw (The Taming of the Small, American Family, Edison) has worked with high-profile
names including Bryan Singer, Joel Silver, Tom DeSanto and many others. Also a versatile screenwriter, she has written 5 feature screenplays, several short stories, and published the popular underground comic book series K.I. – Killer Instinct, which she has also adapted into a complete trilogy for the big screen.

Culpper and Hackshaw are currently doing post-production work on the upcoming psychological and supernatural thriller Within at Bigfoot Entertainment’s (BFE) state-of-the-art facilities for filming and post production in Mactan, Cebu. Within is a BFE and Filmmakers Alliance (FA) Production film.

MASS TRANSIT SYSTEM
KMK buses start plying Talisay-Mandaue routes
By Doris C. Bongcac
Cebu Daily News
Last updated 12:42pm (Mla time) 10/20/2006

A MANILA-based firm has brought to Cebu 15 buses to operate a mass transport system here.

Rogelio Osmeña, regional chairperson of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB), said he issued a franchise for the operation of Cebu KMK Transit Corp. about two months ago.

From their garage located along Ouano Ave. at the North Reclamation Area in Mandaue City, the KMK buses are authorized to ply routes within the cities of Mandaue, Cebu and Talisay passing through the national highway.

Osmeña said he was confident that KMK operations would not draw opposition from the public utility jeepney (PUJ) drivers because the buses would be allowed to ply the main thoroughfares while the PUJs would be allowed to enter interior roads.

KMK's operation has overtaken the plans of Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña to conduct a feasibility study on the viability of having a mass transit system here that may eventually replace the Public Utility Vehicles.

Mayor Osmeña wanted to use the mass transit system in Curritiva, Brazil as a model. He has already met with World Bank representatives earlier to discuss the need for a feasibility study.

A KMK Transit employee said the firm already fielded some of its vehicles to ply their designated routes from barangay Tabunok in Talisay City to the vicinity of SuperMetro located near the Butuanon River in Mandaue City and vice-versa for a minimum fare of P8.

However, employee (who refused to be named) said that they temporarily suspended some buses to ply some routes in Mandaue City after they encountered problems with traffic enforcers.

The employee told Cebu Daily News that Traffic Efficiency and Development Management (Tedman) personnel barred their buses from using the national highway on their way to Super Metro.

The Mandaue City government earlier issued a prohibition on buses and other heavy equipment from using the national highway. These vehicles were re-routed to the North Reclamation Area to Plaridel St. then to a portion of United Nations Ave. located at the foot of the Marcelo Fernan Bridge before heading for the northern part of the city.

“Management has to settle the problem first,” the employee said.

Until an agreement is reached with the Mandaue City government, Osmeña said he would allow the KMK buses to ply routes from Talisay to the vicinity of SM City mall at the North Reclamation Area.

Osmeña said making the buses pass the vicinity of SM mall may add to the congestion in the area. But he assured that congestion would be addressed when road projects in the area are completed.

...not just Brad Pitt but also the film company Warner Bros. ...the film outfit asked Mr. Cobonpue to do a casino-inspired furniture set to be used in the upcoming movie the OCEAN'S 13 ....here's some info ...Global Cebu na gyud ta !!

The Furniture Guru - KENNETH COBONPUE

http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m195/diehardbisdako/kenneth.jpg

Given its associations with decaying hill stations and hippy hovels, rattan furniture has not traditionally had good press. But in Philippine designer Kenneth Cobonpue, kennethcobopue.com, the material may have found its first great virtuoso. The 37-year-old alumnus of New York City's Pratt Institute has been garnering kudos — most recently a 2005 Design for Asia Award — from his studio in the sun-splashed city of Cebu (a place better known for its azure ocean and impossibly sweet mangos). Now the big time beckons. Brad Pitt recently bought Cobonpue's Voyage bed, Warner Brothers asked Cobonpue to furnish a casino set for the forthcoming Ocean's Thirteen; and distributors from Spain to Singapore are clamoring to stock Cobonpue's sexy, curvaceous designs, most of which are consummate expressions of rattan's versatility.

The skin of the lowly vine is used as a weaving material and for binding (some fastening techniques are borrowed from traditional boat building), while rattan's surprisingly sturdy core forms the structure. "Each piece I design has a character and soul born from the inspiration and design process," says Cobonpue, adding that his ideas come mostly from the natural richness of Cebu. One exception is his award-winning Lolah chair, which Cobonpue says was inspired by a softly dented can of Coke. Talk about turning base metals into gold.

***********

Brad Pitt sleeps on Kenneth Cobonpue’s bed

THE WEATHER THESE DAYS HARDLY DRIVES you to produce and expend energy; it instead induces you to seek shelter -- from the rain, or worse, from daily deadlines. That gloomy. It doesn’t help that there’s no tennis Grand Slam on TV and that Lebanon is being bombed 24/7.

But a ray of sunshine in this drab-as-lead weather came from Metro managing editor James Ong, who peeped into my room this week to ask if he could photograph Brad Pitt’s bed designed by Kenneth Cobonpue. Now James got my whole undivided attention for a good five minutes.

The multi-awarded furniture designer has designed a line called Voyage Bed, one of which Brad Pitt bought recently. As many know, the Hollywood actor is deep into design and architecture (sad to say, an interest not apparently shared by his ex-girlfriend, Jennifer Aniston -- us girls belong to Team Aniston), which perhaps explains why he was drawn to Cobonpue’s designs.

Cobonpue achieved fame with Movement 8, the agenda-setting group of designers that was formed by Citem’s Eli Pinto and Budji Layug and which has gained prestige and clientele in design shows worldwide.

Cobonpue has turned his rattan furniture into modern sculptures, with amorphous shapes. His techniques with rattan have moved far ahead of the traditional and conventional.

According to Time Magazine, Warner Brothers has also asked Cobonpue to furnish a casino set for the upcoming “Ocean’s Thirteen.”

But for me, really worth looking forward to is the completion of Cobonpue’s house in Cebu which Budji is designing. The two designers have been working on the house for more than a year now.

Budji, for his part, has been shuttling here and abroad, with design projects in Beijing, Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur.

Dad wants portions of Colon converted into tourist zone

The Freeman 10/22/2006

City Councilor Hilario Davide III has proposed for the conversion of some portions of Colon Street and its connecting streets into an exclusive tourist zone to address the problem of sidewalk vending in the area.

But the proposal was immediately met with strong criticism by the vendors.

According to Davide, the problem of sidewalk vending in the downtown area can be addressed by transforming portions of Colon Street, the oldest street in the country, into a tourist zone.

"It seems the problem of sidewalk vending in the downtown area is here to stay," Davide said. He said the problem will continue to stay as vendors have continued to violate the law.

The resolution, which was approved by the council last Wednesday, requested the city planning office and the City Traffic Operations Management to study the possibility of converting portions of the historic street and its connecting streets into a tourist area.

Davide said the zone would certainly attract local and foreign tourists. "If this happens, then the city will have rid itself of these vendors who have the longest time been dominating our sidewalk and inconveniencing the public."

"There has got to be a better way to address this nagging problem and perhaps, one way by which our sidewalk would be cleared of these vendors without necessarily depriving them of their livelihood is to transform or convert portions of Colon Street and its connecting streets into exclusive tourist zone or a promenade similar to those found in foreign cities, and close these streets to vehicular traffic so that these vendors can sell their ware openly on the streets without causing inconvenience to the general public who use the sidewalks," Davide said.

However, the city planning office and CITOM are still waiting for the resolution from the council before making any comments on the proposal.

But Maria Pino, chairman of Cebu City United Vendors Association, lambasted Davide's proposal, saying that the "good councilor" should have first consulted them before filing the resolution considering that it involves their livelihood.

"Ingon niana nalang ba diay atong city council? Wala man siya mi-consult namong mga vendors. Nakakita mi sa iyang intention pero ilang ipamukha pirme sa amoang mga vendors nga kami nalang pirmi ang hinungdan sa tanang traffic ug kahugaw," Pino said.

Pino said she would ask for a copy of the resolution so that they could submit a position paper to the council.

But in an interview with The Freeman, city consultant on urban poor Gerry Marquez supported Davide's move, saying that it is time for the city to act against those vendors who are not following the law.

"I support Councilor Davide's move because right now, what they (vendors) are doing is they are trying to hostage the city," Marquez said.

"Bisan unsaon nimo ni sila og badlong, dili gyud patuo. Maluoy ta nila pero mga abusado nga gyud kaayo," he added.

Marquez said he would write a letter to Mayor Tomas Osmeña to recommend the clearing up of vendors along Leon Kilat Street up to the Manila Bank building on Colon Street.

Colon Street was once the premier business district in the city but the proliferation of malls all over the metropolis has somehow stripped its prominence it enjoyed for centuries.

It was Spanish conqueror Miguel Lopez de Legaspi who developed the street which, through the years, continued to be the lifeline of trade and commerce in Cebu. - Garry B. Lao/LPM

Citom to study Colon closure
Sun-Star Online
Sunday, October 22, 2006

A CEBU City councilor has found another way to address the nagging problem of sidewalk vending in the downtown area.

Councilor Hilario Davide III wants the City Traffic Operations Management and the City Planning and Development Office to study the possibility of converting portions of Colon St. and its connecting streets into an exclusive tourist zone and closing these areas permanently to vehicular traffic.

This way, sidewalks in the area need not be cleared of obstructions, as vendors won’t be displaced anymore and deprived of their livelihood because they can already sell their wares openly in the streets without causing inconvenience to pedestrians using the sidewalks, he said.

The City Council approved last Wednesday Davide’s resolution.

“In fact, it is believed that even vendors from different areas in the city will be attracted to the exclusive zone. If this happens, then the City will have rid itself of these vendors who have for the longest time been dominating our sidewalks and causing inconvenience the public,” his resolution read.

Davide said an exclusive zone such as this will certainly attract local and foreign tourists and even local residents.

Closing a portion of the street to traffic will encourage people to walk and lessen, if not eliminate, traffic accidents in the area, he added.

Davide said converting a historic area like Colon into an exclusive tourist zone or promenade is not uncommon in foreign cities.

Out of the box

Cleaning, decorating and lighting the streets and clearing them of squatters and ambulant vendors are among the main concerns of the Cebu City Government, as it gets ready for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations summit in December.

Last week, an officer of a group of travel agencies asked City Hall to deal with the beggars near the Magellan’s Cross “in a positive way.”

Robert Lim Joseph, president of the National Association of Independent Travel Agencies, urged local officials to deal with this problem by “thinking out of the box.”

He suggested letting the beggars wear original Cebuano costumes and putting up a caruaje or horse-drawn carriage in the area.

Tourists who want to take photos will be asked to put some coins in a basket. “Even alms-giving can be given dignity,” Joseph has said. (GAC)

‘Paradise’ gets a fresh coat of paint

MOTORISTS, including the delegates to the 12th Asean Summit in December, who use the first Mactan-Mandaue bridge will notice a sea of green roofs upon approaching Mandaue City.

More than 400 residents of Paradise Island, a sitio of Barangay Looc under the bridge, will be provided with green paint for them to coat their roofs with.

At the annual barangay assembly at the Looc basketball court yesterday, the residents were informed of the move to paint their houses in preparation for the Asean summit, where heads of state of at least 16 countries will be coming to Cebu.

Housing and Urban Development officer Frank Guillena told residents that painting their houses will be the residents’ part in the preparations.

He likened it to a fiesta celebration, wherein the host brings out the finest curtains and utensils for the visitors. Each house will be provided with one to two gallons of paint and one paintbrush.

The materials will be properly accounted for since these will be subjected to audit.

City Hall consultant Thadeo Jovito Ouano represented his father, Mayor Thadeo Ouano, at the ceremonial painting of a house at Paradise Island yesterday afternoon.

Cheryl Ouano, executive secretary and daughter-in-law of Mayor Thadeo Ouano, said the City Government has no choice but to resort to such a move because the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) summit is less than 50 days away.

City Administrator Serafin Blanco yesterday admitted that the chances of relocating them to the medium-rise housing (MRH) project, which is still being constructed, appear dim.

The City Government would have wanted to demolish their shanties before December, when foreign dignitaries will come over to Cebu for the Dec. 11-14 summit.

The bridge is part of the ceremonial route for the Asean heads of state.

The MRH project, consisting of two six-storey buildings to be built in a nearby City-owned lot in Barangay Looc, can accommodate 208 of the households. The remaining 200 households will be accommodated in Barangay Paknaan under a community mortgage program.

A P100-million budget was allocated for the MRH project, as part of the P1.3 billion given to the National Housing Authority (NHA) under the 1998 Poverty Alleviation Fund 3.

However, it was only last September when NHA released the initial amount of P15 million to Mandaue City for the implementation of the MRH project. The remaining amount will be released through progress billing.

Ferac Builders and Development is undertaking the project for P99.99 million.

Blanco said that right now, the contractor is still doing the pile-driving for the foundation of the two buildings.

At the barangay assembly yesterday, Guillena said that the residents will be given with new corrugated GI sheets to replace their dilapidated roofs.

Nipa roofs will be replaced with the GI sheets. A resident, however, asked if all her 56 GI sheets would be replaced.

Eufemia Gonzaga, a resident of Paradise Island for more than 30 years, said the GI sheets of her four-bedroom house need to be replaced.

In a separate interview, Looc Barangay Captain Editha Cabahug said only the roofs that are covered with rust or holes will be replaced.

In 2002, a feasibility study on the onsite development of Paradise Island stated that Mandaue City is encountering difficulties in attaining its goal of being a financial and tourist destination due to the existence of squatters “right at its main door.”

The study said the development is feasible but there is a “slim profit margin.” (AAG/ROV)

Street lights to cost City P890T loan

CEBU City Hall wants to enter into a loan with the Land Bank of the Philippines for the purchase of sodium lamp fixtures to light the streets for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) summit in December.

Mayor Tomas Osmeña, in his Oct. 18 letter to Vice Mayor Michael, said the P890,843 worth of fixtures are urgently needed for the summit.

Councilors Edwin Jagmoc and Gerardo Carillo endorsed the mayor’s request through a proposed resolution to the City Council.

Since all fixtures, which will be installed along Osmeña Blvd. from Capitol to Fuente Osmeña, have to be bought from Belgium, the City needs to enter into a letter of credit with the supplier, Comelec.

Comelec is the sole exporter of products from Shreder in Brussels, Belgium.

Imported

It is the local distributor of Shreder seal fittings, ballasts, igniter and caps.

According to a Comelec sales invoice dated Oct. 4, the Cebu City Government will be paying for 13,719 euros through a letter of credit.

The rates exclude the domestic and transmission charges and commitment fees charged by Land Bank against the City.

The City has allocated an initial P6.4 million for the repair of its traffic signs, lights and street railings to get ready for the summit.

For the 117 road signs alone, the City will spend some P900,00 as these will be made of high-intensity grade steel sheets.

A total of P4.56 million will be spent for the geometric improvement and repair of traffic signal facilities. (GAC)

Marco Polo Plaza

The Queen City’s newest landmark

By Rhea Catada
Manila Times

In 2005 an old run-down building that used to be the Cebu Plaza Hotel in Nivel Hills, Apas, Cebu City, was spared from demolition to serve an even bigger purpose. That is, to mark the presence of the Marco Polo Hotel Group in the Queen City of the South.

At the helm of the renovation was the 34-year-old real- estate development firm Federal Land, which found its first hotel venture as both a challenge and a key instrument to its future expansions. Overhauling a 26-year-old structure was no easy task, but at the same time the project provided the right medium for the company to make a bold statement in the hotel and real-estate industries.

“We were a bit challenged when we first saw the interiors of the building,” admits Reynaldo Villar, EVP of Federal Land. “But we were confident that this was nothing we couldn’t handle.”

With an P800-million budget, Federal Land began to renovate the edifice, with help from Recio+Casas Architectures, and opened the hotel franchise as The Marco Polo Plaza Cebu in April 2006 in time for local tourism’s peak season.

“We retained the structure but we gutted the whole building and then installed brand-new piping and electricity lines, as well as a new security system,” adds Villar, who was also appointed the hotel’s president. “We also centralized the air conditioning in the building.”

Launched in partnership with the Hong Kong-based Marco Polo Hotel Group, the Marco Polo Plaza Cebu is now a picture of grandeur.

Cebu’s newest landmark

Surrounded by 7.5 hectares of lush vegetation with landscaping by Efren Aurelio of ADI Design, Marco Polo Plaza aspires to be one of Cebu’s most prominent landmarks.

The hotel experience begins at the moment guests step into the lobby. They are immediately welcomed to an expansive space, a trademark of Marco Polo hotels.

“The overall design is inspired by the original Marco Polo Hotel interiors: grand, bright and spacious,” explains Jose Pedro Recio of Recio+Casas Architectures.

At the center, affixed to the 10-meter-high ceiling is a glorious chandelier made from Swarovski crystals, casting a subtle brilliance to the space below. Soothing ambiance music further enhances the mood, giving the guests a preview of a luxurious hotel experience.

http://img135.imageshack.us/img135/8213/56740433mppc2forprintingdsc031.jpg

On the right portion of the lobby is a wooden shelf full of heirloom clay jars, adding a touch of old-world elegance to the space.

http://img117.imageshack.us/img117/9617/56740436mppc2forprintingdsc031.jpg
http://img46.imageshack.us/img46/8143/56740434mppc2forprintingdsc031.jpg

“These jars are all sourced from Cebu antique suppliers,” Recio adds. “We wanted to have an effect reminiscent of the galleon trade.”

The experience

Standing at 600 feet above sea level, the 329-room hotel provides a spectacular view of the city and the Bay of Cebu. The view gets even more enchanting at night with the sparkle of city lights below.

Each room at Marco Polo Plaza sports a contemporary design, fusing European inspirations with Eastern sensibilities.

“Guest rooms were made 300 mm longer by removing the old split unit air cons,” Recio says. “The rooms now have central air conditioning and are designed with light fabrics and colors.”

Each room is equipped with opulent wood furnishings from Cebu; plush draperies and bedsheets; soft and clean beds; a comfortable, well-lit reading area; and pristine bathrooms. Suites, on the other hand, have a more spacious layout, with fluffy sofas and beds, luxurious furnishings and mood-enhancing light fixtures.

The hotel’s exuberant design extends to Café Marco, Marco Polo Hotel Group’s signature outlet. Its wooden floors and panels, earth-toned tabletops, Asian-inspired light fixtures and chair cushions of green, mustard and deep red, define the restaurant’s urban and chic ambiance. Covering 535 square meters, 400sqm are dedicated to the restaurant and 135sqm to the four show kitchens. Café Marco can seat up to 144 guests.

“The kitchens are designed to showcase the preparation of a la carte and buffet dishes,” said general manager Hans Hauri. “Expect a lot of activity and excitement from each kitchen—Asian, Japanese, Western and dessert.”

The swimming pool is also a sight to behold. The mango-shaped pool is replete with waterfalls, plus a bar offering refreshments and gourmet dishes cooked from mango wood-fired oven.

The newest addition to the hotel’s food and beverage outlets is the Lounge on the 24th floor, launched on October 6, which serves the guests of the Continental Club. Hauri calls the Continental Club a “hotel within a hotel” that embraces privacy and provides extra services to guests, such as express checkout, buffet breakfast and all-day coffee and tea.

Overall, the Marco Polo Plaza Cebu promises a one-of-a-kind experience for guests. As Hauri puts it: “Business and leisure travelers have yet another reason to come to Cebu. We can’t wait to serve them distinct Cebuano hospitality at its finest.”
