CCCI works on branding Cebu's ICT capabilities

The ambitious plan of bringing the Cebu Business Month (CBM 2007) on international grounds will officially start next month, taking advantage of the presence of dignitaries and key business players from other countries during the ASEAN Investment and Business Summit.

Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry's CBM in June 2007 will introduce an ASEAN circuit of ICT (Information Communication Technology) Conferences, to establish a good ICT branding of Cebu in the ASEAN member countries.

CCCI president Francis O. Monera said part of the plan is to hold different ICT Conferences in the ASEAN member countries, prior to the holding of CBM 2007, which will organize an International ICT Conference.

"We have a similar arrangement already with Hong Kong, Singapore, and Kuala Lumpur, that together with ICT players in the Cebu, we go to these countries and hold ICT conferences," Monera said.

Based on this experience, Monera said an official ASEAN ICT circuit of conferences will be pushed, and will be proposed during the four-day ASEAN Business and Investment Summit scheduled on December 7 to 10.

Based on the latest study, 24 hour convenience stores such as 7-11 and Ministop are the preferred retail areas especially for those in a rush... In Manila and surrounding areas, these convenience stores are scattered everywhere to erase the hassle of going to the malls and supermarkets, having to wait minutes to queue to the check out counters especially when you don't have a lot to buy.

In my opinion, these convenience stores are needed especially in untouched markets where there aren't malls yet so that those from far-flung places do not need to troop to the metropolis just to buy their weekly groceries.

Anyway, have you guys seen the former site of Rositas Fuente Supermarket? The one beside McDonalds Fuente?

It's actually being renovated now for Watsons.. Renovation works has been going on for the past few months but it was only weeks ago that they displayed a notice saying that it's going to be another Watsons. It would probably open next month.

I think this would be the biggest of all the Watsons here in the province because they're taking up the entire space of the old Rositas Supermarket.

The CICC looks great. Pero, I have a little suggestion to the landscape committee...(and hehehe, I hope this won't sound like Valium talking) I wish that they're gonna replace those sick-looking palm trees in the front entrance before the foreign press takes pictures of them. Hehe. But seriously, mga pare ko, it's one small adjustment that will make a whole lot of difference in terms of the image we are trying to project. Go Cebu!

in addition, it seems that the aesthetics is not given much attention surrounding the cicc. the big eucalyptus trees at the left side of the facility shouldn't be there because obviously there is no balance. they should cut or move(if that is possible) them somewhere else and plant new ones on the right areas.

7-11 is for franchise

Actually, the "night market" especially those who are working on graveyard needs these 24/7 7-11 24 hour convenience stores. There is one in IT Park itself but some people will have to stride an effort to walk to C24 just to buy some things especially during breaks.

I dunno but what was the Village back then will rise an IT Mall...more or less accommodating the growing number of "aswangs"(graveyard/GY people as the AM people call them, wehehehehe!) in the BPO in Cebu.

... if you have read the news 2 or 3 weeks ago, there are no 7-11's yet outside Luzon, however, they have an expansion plan outside Luzon in which one of the first cities they're going to put up their store will be Cebu City and hopefully that would be next year....

ABS-CBN’s "Rated K" and "The Probe" to feature Operation Second Chance

People from all over the world will have a glimpse of one of Cebu City’s successful initiatives, the Operation Second Chance, the only penal complex for minor offenders in the country.

The Cebu City Commission for the Welfare and Protection of Children (CCWPC) is busy with the finalization of the storyline and other pre-production arrangements with the production team of ABS-CBN’s documentary program The Probe hosted by veteran broadcast journalist Cheche Lazarro.

Korina Sanchez and his team arrived in Cebu City last Saturday to conduct interviews with CCWPC co-chairman Margot Osmeña and the children at the center. Sanchez and her team also visited the center at Barangay Kalunasan.

The feature story will be aired come Sunday over ABS-CBN 2.

The First Lady of Cebu said the idea came after negative comments on the Philippine Juvenile Justice System were made.

“This is not to glorify anybody but to show to the people that something has been done in the area of Juvenile System”, Osmeña said.

Osmeña said she wrote a letter to Cheche Lazaro and Korina Sanchez of her noble intention of which the ABS-CBN people agreed.

Operation Second Chance is a facility intended for minors in conflict with the law. It is a joint project of the Cebu City Task Force on Street Children and the Cebu City government. It is located at Barangay Kalunasan, Cebu City.

The center was fully operational last August 2002. Being the only separate minors’ detention center in the country, the Operation Second Chance aims to provide a genuine rehabilitation facility for youthful offenders.

Just recently, the city government signed a memorandum of agreement with the TESDA, Don Bosco Training Center and Ramon Aboitiz Foundation, Inc. for the provision of six months skills training on carpentry and woodworking to interested minors housed in Operation Second Chance.

Under the MOA, those minors who will complete the training program will be given certificate by TESDA which they can use when they will go out of the center.

Aside from the Operation Second Chance, The Probe episode will also highlight the diversion program implemented by the city government for minors in conflict with the law. It will feature the Community Scouts Rehabilitation Center and the Balay Pasilungan.

Dear Sir,

Please find below, in boldface, Mr. Henson's response regarding the Cebu International Convention Center story:

The video shown is fresh and not two weeks old. It came from our coverage in Cebu over the weekend and we aired the story on Monday, Oct 16.

We were also able to present the sides of the provincial government as well as the project architect. We quoted Cebu Governor Gwen Garcia saying "We promise to deliver and we will. Just wait for November 15." We also quoted Architecht Manuel Guanzon who said "If we continue this pace of work, we will hit the target on Nov. 15."

While the authorities say the project is 95% complete, we, as journalists, have to dig deeper, and there is no better way to verify the progress of the construction than to do an actual visual inspection. The inspection was conducted with the presence of the governor and the architect and clearly, much was left to be done including the walls, floor tiles, roof, the mechanical equipment like escalators, elevators, electrical equipment like sound systems, etc.

In the report, we carried the explanation of the architect who said there is no cause for concern because all materials have already been prefabricated and it will only be a matter of installing them (in other words, isasalpak na lang).

We also mentioned, as the architect explained, that they're using structural steel which can be finished faster than reinforced concrete. Reinforced concrete needs curing time but structural steel does not. The architect, however, explained that structural steel is 30 percent more costly. Naturally, the report mentioned that the project is turning to be more expensive than projected.

Finally, the story closed with the information that construction people are working 24/7 to meet the deadline. I believe that we were able to lay down the most pertinent facts of the story as clearly as possible.

P.S. For the sake of accuracy, we should no longer use my video for future updates on the CICC construction because, as expected, the visual appearance of the project changes from time to time. We need to use fresh videos for future updates.

alright people, hold your horses... :D 7-eleven is for franchise but it's only open to Luzon area for now... same with Ministop. :) no need to worry coz 7-eleven will expand to Cebu when the number of Luzon outlets reaches 400+. there are currently 300 7-eleven shops operating in entire Luzon island. and the only reason why these top two 24-hour stores aren't operating (yet) outside Luzon is because of accessibility. delivery of goods in a daily basis is very vital in this kind of business. all 7-eleven and Ministop outlets in the country today are accessible thru road. so if we open one or two shops in cebu, they'll have to ship their goods everyday which is costly.

so i think this was also Jollibee's case way back then...thus the Jollibee factory in Mandaue City came into the picture, that made Central Philippines bee-happy. :lol:

yet again, as what ashton said. there's really nothing special with 7-11. lol

TOURISM
Since it is well established that in Asian tourist destinations Bali and Phuket are kings, Cebu needs to find a way to get a share of the tourism market by finding its "edge" (which, despite the hype over the 2nd Ceboom, still is not enough to make that "edge" clearer and more recognized/praised). Furthermore, Cebu needs to compete with other "emerging worldwide-recognized Asian destinations"--such as itself--with the likes of Langkawi (Malaysia), Melacca (Malaysia), Pattaya (Thailand), and Chiang Mai (Thailand). What would be the semi-perfect solution/methodology so that Cebu will not be drowned by up-and-coming rivals and, even, compete head-to-head with ultra-tourist draws such as Bangkok (Thailand), Phuket (Thailand), and Bali (Indonesia)?

Ever since the creation of the AsiaTown I.T. Parks and other similar areas Cebu has become "quite" attractive to foreign firms that wants to take advantage of our educated/highly-skilled and low-salary/wage workforce for back-office work such as: BPO, Medical Transcriptions and (whatever you call the job referring to being a call center agents/reps). Lately, the run-up to the 12th Asean Summit in December and, lately, the sound economic fundamentals and credentials have created what we Cebuanos refer to as "the 2nd Ceboom". However, after having made known through a very recent survey on "friendliness of business-environment" as well as "competitiveness survey" the Philippines, as a whole, has been sliping the rankings for the past few years. Furthermore, Bangalore, the prized i.t. jewel of India might just get replaced by Beijing or Shnaghai since even India's leadership in this field is slowly waning in the light of increased importance of English-proficiency on the part of China. This might just, very well, take that leadership from it. The Philippines, currently is the second top player. With China's rise, yet again, as a future potential BPO and "call center investments" destination, how can others compete--seriously? In the shoulder of rising giants China, India, and Indonesia as well as the continued dynamism of Asian tigers and other emerging Asian markets like: Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Malaysia, Thailand and, most especially, South Korea; how can Cebu, as the second metropolitan of Pinas, and probably its most dynamic, beat the odds and rise-up to the challenge?

Asia Pacific, being the fastest growing major economic region in the world has been springing forth many ultra-efficient/modern financial/business hubs such as: Singapore, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Mumbai, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, and Tianjin as well as the original Asian "boomtown" and "mega-monolith", Tokyo, and its smaller mega-monolith sisters: Osaka, Seoul, Beijing, and Shanghai. With all these financial/business giants, how can Cebu become a truly "regional" player in the world of business and finance?

I saw in the news earlier that should the CICC fail to be completed on time, they will use another venue. They are constructing now a tent city at the Shangri-la compound which they call The Marquee. Its an airconditioned tent structure that can hold up to 1000 persons in one setting. The design is also nice.

Activists to hold parallel ‘summit’ during ASEAN meet

CEBU CITY -- Activists and militants will hold their own “parallel” international conference in Cebu as heads of state of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member-countries meet here in December.

Gerry Corpuz, information officer of the Pambansang Lakas ng Kilusang Mamamalakaya ng Pilipinas (Pamalakaya) said on Wednesday that about 50 to 100 delegates from Asia, Europe, Japan and the United States would attend the international conference dubbed the “People's Events.”

The International League of People's Struggle, a worldwide association composed of over 300 people's organizations, is spearheading the activity although the participants will be limited only to ASEAN members and those from Japan, Europe and the US, Corpuz said.

Being a member of the international league, the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (New Patriotic Alliance or Bayan) and its affiliated groups such as Kilusang Mayo Uno (May First Movement), Gabriela, Anakpawis, Pamalakaya and others organized the event scheduled for December 10 and 12, Corpuz said.

The international conference will focus on the American-initiated wars, human rights abuses and other economic issues faced by the people of Southeast Asia.

Corpuz said they were still negotiating for the event's venue.

Aside from the international conference, Corpuz said they would hold daily protest actions, concerts and interfaith rallies but emphasized their activities are not meant to disrupt the ASEAN Summit.

He said they would coordinate with the Cebu City government to ensure that no terrorists or troublemakers would be able to pass as one of their delegates. He said their delegates "are social activists, civil libertarians and human rights activists. They are members of highly esteemed organizations from other countries."

Corpuz did not see any problem with accommodations even if the hotels are expected to be fully booked during the event. "The delegates will be hosted by the communities, like the urban poor communities," he said.

Aside from the international conference, Bayan, Pamalakaya and other affiliated groups will hold a fluvial parade from Talisay City to the Mactan Bridge. At least 50 small fishing boats will participate in the event, he said.

The ASEAN Summit will be held in Cebu from December 11 to 14 at the Shangri-La Mactan Island Resort and Spa in Lapulapu City and the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC), which is still being constructed, in Mandaue City.

Born Diane Monique Lhuillier to French, Spanish/Filipino parents, Monique was raised in the southern part of the Philippines called CEBU. As a child, Monique was very influenced by her mother's glamorous sense of style and was exposed to the importance of style because the family traveled extensively. Her favorite destinations were always Paris and Los Angeles. At the early age of 15, Monique left home to attend the prestigious Chateau Mont-Choisi boarding school in Lausanne, Switzerland. Emall expansion set to begin next summer

Cebu Central Realty Corp. plans to develop a 5,000 square-meter property as an extension of Elizabeth Mall in downtown Cebu City.

Lawyer Augusto Go, owner of Elizabeth Mall, said yesterday that work on the three-story building, where the University of Cebu (UC) Allied Engineering School stands today, is set to begin in summer of 2006.

Go hopes to complete the mall extension by March 2007 to accommodate the growing number of mall-goers.

“There is a demand for more space,” Go said of the mall, which is visited by an average of 40,000 to 60,000 persons a day.

However, he revealed that the tenants have observed that while sales have gone up, the number of items sold has decreased, indicating that the economy is not doing well.

Aside from the mall, Go said expansion work on the University of Cebu (UC) campuses in Barangay Banilad, Cebu City and in Mandaue City are ongoing to accommodate the increasing number of enrollees.

The recent 12th International Autumn Trade Fair for Tourism in Moscow, Russia, often simply known as Otdykh (Leisure), proved to be another excellent promotional and sales tool for developing tourism awareness of the Philippines.

The four-day well-attended annual exhibit featured the entire product range of the world travel industry, from daylong sightseeing trips to cultural and adventure tours, wellness and enriching holidays, interesting workshops, educational seminars, and programs for tourists and business travelers.

As expected, majority of the travel trade visitors were decision makers from Russia and neighboring countries, who met daily with international experts to establish new business contacts, learn about new destinations, and sign contracts for the coming year traveling season.

Oscar Palabyab, Tourism Undersecretary for tourism services and regional offices, headed the Philippine delegation, with Team Europe head Verna Buensuceso. She was ably assisted by Cristy Navarro, Katherine Alcantara and Karen May Sanchez. Rep. Nerissa Corazon of the 6th district of Cebu also joined the travel mission.

The Philippine Pavilion, all of 126 square meters, strategically located in the very center of the Crocus Expo, had several participants and key players that did justice to the diverse fabulous tourist destinations they were enthusiastically promoting. They included top tour operators, including Baron Travel Corp. president Ma. construction had a “clean” facade yesterday. While there were workers at the
front and on the grounds, representatives of 17 countries who checked the
facility yesterday saw no scaffoldings that used to mar CICC’s front look.

Cebu’s furniture show to move to CICC in ’08

THE Cebu International Convention Center (CICC) will not become another white elephant after the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) Summit next month.

Eric Mendoza, president of the Mandaue Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI), dismissed speculations that the CICC, like some projects of the government, will become idle after the international event.

“One of the events that will definitely be held at the CICC every year is the Cebu X (Cebu International Furniture and Furnishings Exhibition),” he said in an interview.

This is why Cebu Furniture Industries Foundation Inc. (CFIF), the main organizer of Cebu X, continues to aver full support to the construction of the CICC, amid questions about the escalating construction cost of the facility.

CFIF is appealing to all concerned agencies that adequate funding be allocated for the completion of the facility.

“Scrimping the expenses to work around a tight budget will not help us attain the world-class standards that we are aiming for,” CFIF president Michael Basubas said.

He said about 19 big companies in Cebu, such as Mendoza’s Master Craft Philippines and Basubas’ Diamond Cane, are extending support to the construction of the CICC by providing free furniture and furnishings for function rooms at the convention center.

Each of the 19 function rooms will have different yet Cebuano look, Mendoza said.

Basubas said CFIF is excited about holding the Cebu X 2008 at the CICC. Cebu X 2007 will still be held at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino, as invitations to international buyers and visitors have already been sent.

Cebu X is an annual event organized by CFIF. Despite the need for more space, the organization has been holding the event at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino which has a large ballroom.

Basubas said CFIF believes that CICC can bring about a significant change in the look of Cebu X, especially with China’s entry into the global furniture market and its effect on local exporters.

“We have a stake in the completion of the CICC, as it will be the future venue of the Cebu X shows,” he said.

Cebu X is considered the most cost-effective and viable marketing tool for most small and medium enterprises today having a huge employment base of over a million workforce.

Booming jud kaayo ang Cebu. In real estate, it's been said that there's such thing as a 7 year cycle. In all of the metropolis in the country, Cebu is fortunate to be part of this cycle's real estate boom. That's the reason why King and other local real estate developers are so eager and proactive when it comes to investments.

In the Philippines, here's how the cycle goes:

It's been said that 7 years before Ninoy was assasinated, we had a booming real estate industry. Buildings were erected and estates were developed. 1983 was the start of the industry's downward slope. After 7 years - 1990 was the start of the real estate boom. And i think that was experienced here in Cebu as well. Ramos was the president and economic developments were so visible especially here in Cebu. Then by 1997 - we had the Asian Financial Crisis. Real estate developments were not halted pero mabagal.....7 years after? 2004, haven't u noticed? especially here in Cebu? booming ulit ang real estate industry. With J King's Fuente Triangle Realty alone, he is targeting more highrise condos to be built. Not to discount the investments of other local developers and international investors as well. They say, this would last for the next 7 years...who knows what would happen next.......But one thing I'm sure of, within the next 7 years...the city's skyline will change, new estates will be developed, and new and more world class town resorts will be established. :rock: :rock:

- the most expensive project of Filinvest Leisure to date....Initially, Filinvest invested 4 billion pesos in this 12 hectare seaside project.

- the landscape will be done by a Hong Kong based company behind Shangri-la's landscape, Hyatt Hotel in Waikiki - Hawaii , and Grand Hyatt Bali Hotel and Spa in Indonesia.

- the Villas will be designed by a company which designed some of the resorts in Hawaii, Bali, and Phuket. same company which designed The Venetian in Las Vegas and Grand Hyatt Bali Hotel and Spa in Indonesia.

Mall to turn lagoon into P800M ‘leisure oasis’

By December next year, the lagoon of Ayala Center Cebu will be fully transformed into a new “leisure oasis” with al fresco dining, covered walkways, outdoor escalators and more choices.

Instead of just adding more shops and floor area to the upscale mall, Ayala developers are positioning the new area as a new “lifestyle destination.”

The plans were unveiled Monday night in the lagoon, where fire-breathing dancers and the beat of drums provided a vivid contrast to a stage flanked by outdoor waterfalls and bamboo.

Cebu Holdings Inc. (CHI) is investing P800 million in the project with construction starting this January 2007.

“The consumer is constantly evolving at a head-spinning pace,” Rene Almendras, CHI president, said in his remarks. “And our challenge was to be always relevant and be able to adapt to these changes; to be able to innovate and therefore be a market leader.”

He said Ayala acknowledges the growing cosmopolitan lifestyle in Cebu and aims to lead the market by showing “this is the way to go.”

CHI will add about 8,000 square meters of leasable area. A four-story building will accommodate around 50 shops and restaurants.

The first level will have chef-based and popular restaurants with alfresco dining areas. The second level will have trendy shops and lifestyle outlets. The third and fourth levels will be the new “night out” center for bars and entertainment clubs.

All these changes will be “seamlessly connected to the mall” by covered walkways and outdoor escalators. A lotus-shaped outdoor stage will provide another home for shows and performing arts.

For bigger parking, more than 300 new parking slots will provide access to the mall’s existing area with escalators leading to the basement.

“This new destination will bring nature into the whole perspective, and yet it will be very functional,” said Almendras, who called the lagoon design “an architectural masterpiece.”

CHI chief operating officer Francis O. Monera led the evening’s toast to Ayala’s latest “gem”. He said planning for the expansion was “along the Ayala tradition of innovative and trailblazing ideas yet uniquely Cebuano as our tribute to Cebu and its people who warmly accepted us from the start.”

Governor Gwendolyn Garcia and Cebu City First Lady Margot Osmeña were special guests at the launching.

Ayala Center Cebu, owned and operated by CHI, first opened in November 1994.

They are already planning to build a cable car papuntang TOPS. That's what ive heard ha. And i guess that was posted here sa Cebu thread a year ago. pero wala pa jud concrete proposal re this.

AS an island in Central Philippines, Cebu is just like the navel of the whole archipelago. And although it is a small one, shaped like a sweet potato, it has its share of people and resources that could very well bring about enough development to make its economy move forward, perhaps even much faster than many of the provinces that compose this republic. Its location and growth has made it second only to Manila in business activity.

Not very long ago, I got hold of a folder that said it was a “term of reference for the feasibility studies of a proposed Cebu “transaxial” road project. The project is supposed to open up Cebu’s highlands to economic development. It was an infrastructure project for Cebu like no other I have seen being proposed before. Of course, I had heard of such plans earlier to build the so-called backbone highway of and oblong-shaped island.

Such a road was envisioned to begin from the town of Santander at the southernmost tip of the province to the municipality of Daanbantayan in the northern tip. But that was a couple of years back, and since then, it has remained mere talk. The envisioned highway would cut lengthwise through the mountainous center and along the way it would grow “arms” like the vines of a grape or a squash plant.

The arms, of course, would be the access roads that would emanate from the coastal towns, reaching out to the axial highway that runs lengthwise like a vertebrae or backbone of the province. All these years, the coastal highway has been the only means of accessing the 47 municipalities and six component cities of Cebu. It is hoped that finally, the axial roadway would open the hinterlands to development.

But that was as far as it went then, until a few days ago when I caught a glimpse of an accomplished concept paper of the project that has become a common cause of the incumbent provincial leadership. Initiated by Vice Gov. Greg Sanchez as chairman of the infrastructure committee, what was talked about then as the backbone highway many years back, is now the proposed Cebu Transaxial Road Project.

The way the present proposal is unfolding, it is a joint endeavor of both Gov. Gwen Garcia and the Vice Governor. In a recent trip to Malaysia, an Asean member country, the governor talked about it as one of her priority projects. An initial estimate of its cost when implemented hovers somewhere in the vicinity of P4 billion, more or less. However, according to Sanchez, some portions of the road already exist.

It is only a matter of repairing, improving, and connecting them. That wood further bring down the cost. But its economic implication would be far-reaching. For the past few years, the province of Cebu has been experiencing considerably good economic growth. The growth in the industrial, commercial, financial and tourism sectors necessitates that to maximize the development potential of the rural areas, they should be made accessible.

At the moment, they are isolated from the commercial and population centers of the towns. Their accessibility from the axial roadway would open them not only to the urban centers, but also to the seaports and airports. To sustain this development momentum, associated transport infrastructures that already exist needs “to be upgraded, particularly those located near to or linking towns and cities.”

The quote in the preceding paragraph comes from the introductory part of the “terms of reference “pamphlet” that claims that its main objective is “to provide direct, safe and quality access to all municipalities of the Province of Cebu to the urban center.” And “To have the site location for the possible installation of water supply/power lines to the towns.” But the central theme of the proposed project is essentially increasing the pace of growth.

But what the proposed transaxial highway truly means to the Cebuanos is that for the first time in its history as a province, getting from one town to another around the island which has been blessed with many old churches and other Spanish colonial landmarks, would be a matter of minutes, no longer of hours, as it used to be. For then, what Cebuanos called “first-class bad roads” will not be truly first-class concrete roads

TO FURTHER strengthen its base in Cebu, a local insurance company is constructing its own building to cater to its growing number of stakeholders.

“It’s a testament of our commitment to the insuring public of Cebu and Visayas,” said Pioneer Insurance and Safety Corp. (PISC) senior vice president for branches Fred Agor.

PISC is set to open the eight-story Pioneer House Cebu at the Cebu Business Park by middle of next year, Agor said in an interview yesterday.

This is the company’s third commercial property outside of Metro Manila but the first in Visayas.

The estimated P200-million property is ahead of its 45-day topping off schedule that was originally planned on Dec. 29.

Agor said PISC will only be occupying one floor of the 10,000 square-meter building while the rest will be open for prospective tenants.

“Almost all the spaces have been rented (out) but we are still getting inquiries,” PISC corporate communications head Irene Quilino said.

In a statement furnished to Sun.Star Cebu, Pioneer Insurance reported gross written premiums of over P1.8 billion in 2005.

It is also backed by equity of close to P3.3 billion and managing assets of nearly P6.1 billion.

Agor said that while the company has a 12 percent market share in Cebu, it has no “concrete” plans to expand its number of branches.

“If we expand, it would be through other agencies or intermediaries,” he said.

Agor is optimistic that despite the competition among insurance industry players, there is still a strong demand for insurance policies in the province.

Pioneer Group’s network includes Pioneer Insurance and Security Group, Pioneer Life Assurance Corp. and Pioneer Continental Insurance Corp.

It also has 16 branches nationwide, four of which are in the Visayas (Cebu, Tacloban, Bacolod and Iloilo), and one branch in Hong Kong.

PISC established its presence in the insurance industry since 1958 and are now offering both life and non-life insurance policies, and a “special development” of non-traditional insurance packages.

The opening I think is in the CICC, hehehe.. I think we can watch it on TV.. I remember the opening ceremonies of the last ASEAN summit in Kuala Lumpur which was featured in BBC. And yup there were some cultural shows.

Before I forget, there will be a rehearsal on December 06 I think at the Cebu Capitol grounds and at the junction of Colon and Osmeña blvd. for the cultural shows that will be attended by the first ladies.

yeah bai i think it will be like an expressway that will have minimal intersections, and i guess that's what sets is apart from our national highways.

can anybody help me find the rendering for the landscaping of the surroundings of magellan's cross? i think cebu can do much better than that sorry state of the surroundings now....it should be tiled and landscped well, just like the sidewalk of USC main or better, i think it's one of the primary destination of tourists here in Cebu, with truckloads/bus.loads of tourists visiting the place from time to time, it should be spruced up, unsa may plano ani nila?

Councilor Joy Pesquera is currently gathering data for the urban design of Cebu.

As of now, City Hall is still being renovated and an article in the newspaper mentioned that the landscaping for the City Hall will go all the way to Magellan's Cross. I hope this will push through.

Regarding the tartanilla, I have already presented an initial plan to let the tartanillas ply within the inner city; however, we have to make sure that the traffic management within the area is already perfect. Constant discussion had been made with the drivers and operators of tartanillas. We have good relations with them. We integrate the training and discipline of the tartanilla drivers so that once we will be able to give them a route within the inner city, we will fully comply with our traffic rules.

RLC to offer sites for BPO facilities

Robinsons Land Corporation (RLC), one of the country’s largest real estate companies, will be making available spaces that are designed for business process outsourcing firms in its shopping mall developments in Manila, Paranaque, Cebu and Davao.

Each location will have facilities of as much as 6,000 to 10,000 square meters for BPOs and call centers which will be appended to the mall area.

RLC is already one of the largest landlord of BPOs and call centers in the Philippines through its various commercial centers.

"We are able to provide the facilities call centers want in five of our shopping centers—Robinsons Place Novaliches in Quezon City, Robinsons Place Cainta, Robinsons Metro Bacolod, Robinsons Place Pioneer and soon in Robinsons Place Lipa in Batangas," said RLC commercial centers division general manager Cornelio Mapa, Jr.

Mapa added that the presence of these call centers and BPOs complements the synergy that Robinsons shopping malls provide.

"Our shopping malls provide recreational value to call center employees who look forward to having some respite after a day at work. Our locations are strategic since we are also very accessible to public transport, making it more easy for these employees to go to their work place and go home even during late hours," said Mapa.

"We notice that call center employees look to the mall as a haven after a long shift. They now have a chance to catch a movie or grab a bite to eat in food establishments found in these malls", he added.

Mapa also noted that BPO companies find ease in recruitment of employees because of the advantages a mall provides.

Of late, large BPOs and call center operators have been on expansion modes; spreading their operations to key provinces.

"RLC has likewise taken its cue from their expansion plans and are ready to accommodate new players in our shopping malls, whether here in Metro Manila or in the provinces," Mapa said adding that interested parties may contact their mall leasing executives.

RLC is operating 18 shopping malls in the country today. Six are strategically located in Metro Manila while the rest are in Northern and Southern Luzon, as well as in West and Central Visayas and in Mindanao.

In recent reports, the Philippines has been found to be one of the leading sites for BPOs, since it is one of the largest English speaking nations in the world.

It also has over 300 software development companies, the biggest segment in the Philippines e-service industry in terms of players.

According to US-based industry experts, the Philippines is in a position to capture over 10 percent market share of the global ITES and BPO outsourcing pie within the next two to three years.

BPO sectors such as shared financial services, transcription and data processing services are emerging markets for the Philippines.

However, the explosive and sustained growth of the contact center industry in the Philippines is expected to overshadow the other sectors.

According to the BPO Association of the Philippines, the work force is expected to grow from 245,000 to 900,000 by 2010 and revenues from $ 3 billion to $ 12 billion.(JAL)

... if you have read the press release about this, Robinsons Land Corporation has given the city government to use the lot within 2 years ...so, if the city gov't will be able to transfer its properties/machineries etc. at an earlier time, much better but if the city will use up the whole 2 years, probably, we can see construction activity in that area year sa 2008 pa and the completion date will be around 2010 pa....sus, layua pa gyud!

Osmeña to ink pact with CIPC on SRP promotion

The City Council has authorized Mayor Tomas Osmeña to enter into a memorandum of agreement with Cebu Investment Promotions Center (CIPC) to promote the 295-hectare South Road Properties as investment destination for both local and international investors.

In her proposed resolution, Majority Floor Leader Jocelyn Pesquera said the city government needs to tap the CIPC to handle the promotion and marketing of SRP. She said that in return, the city would pay CIPC P4,586,916.

The CIPC is a foundation whose primary purpose is to promote investment in the region.

The SRP, which is registered with Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) as a special economic zone, is now in its final stages of completion. Designed for mixed land use, it can easily accommodate manufacturing, commercial, tourism and information technology service enterprises.

Unlike the North Reclamation Project and the Mandaue City Reclamation Project, the SRP is no longer entirely devoted to manufacturing and export processing.

Since CIPC has been marketing the SRP as a prime mixed land use development project, it will be sub-zoned to accommodate investments in light manufacturing, tourism, information technology and other service enterprises.

In August 1995, the city government availed of the official development assistance loan from the Japan Bank for International Cooperation worth 12.3 billion yen to finance the SRP.

The SRP was then declared a special economic zone through Presidential Proclamation No. 763 issued on January 20, 2005, four years after the completion of the reclamation works in 2000. - Garry B. Lao/LPM

^^yup, they say some classrooms aren't airconditioned. but i think only the upper floors. computer, speech, science labs etc are of course airconditioned. the bldg is designed in a way where fresh air can circulate well. since the bldg is new, it should have one of the best ventilation system today. it is common in major university campuses in the country.

Classrooms not airconditioned? I don't think so. When I was still in college there (at the existing campus), almost all of our classrooms were airconditioned except for the classrooms in the top most floor where the laboratories are found (chemistry and zoology laboratories). At the colleges of medicine, nursing, and pt/ot, all of their classrooms are airconditioned including the library.

I'm quite confused with The Freeman's article.

The CIPC has long been the promoting and marketing arm of the CIPC under Joel Mari Yu.

Also, what do they mean when they said that unlike the North and Mandaue Reclamation areas, the SRP is no longer devoted to manufacturing and export processing? For all I know, the North and Mandaue reclamation areas are all mixed use. Proof of this are the number of warehouses, commercial establishments, hotels and schools located in it.

umm, yeah that's the problem because there's no more highway where we can divert these trucks except perhaps if they build a viaduct at the waterfront that would connect to the proposed North Coastal road.

There's another road at the Cebu Boardwalk but that would also mar Cebu Doc and the mall itself..

Maybe they should start thinking of building an express "skyway" for trucks, buses, and other vehicles going out of the city?

ummm, but the Sheraton Hotel building was not built in the 1980s.. Hehehe.. Anyways, Henry Sy might not be interested in it but it would be foolish to just let it rot down.

He could sell it to potential buyers and in fact, even earn money from its sale. Look at what happened to Cebu Plaza, hehe..

my friends even joked about it, saying that 'entities' from other countries visiting cebu(a.k.a. ghost tourists) probably check-in at sheraton...another first for cebu...hehehe...
