Let me just tell you that it's not just the broadcasters who have those name mistakes. Last year, when we watched the show "MRS" at Tambuli, the hosts said, "Live na Live po ang MRS sa Tambuli Resort sa Cebu City" :)

But @mike, there are times nga maka discuss ta dri about ASEAN summit in relation to Cebu's developments pero those posts that are significant to us or to our discussions here and you think that is out of topic in this thread, let us know 1st before you erase it or better transfer it to the right thread. Here's how it should be (just my opinion):

- We should be able to discuss something about the ASEAN in this thread as long as it is directly related to Cebu's development (like the influx perhaps of visitors, the beautification works in the city)..

- At the ASEAN Summit thread, we should encourage discussion there that are purely related to ASEAN Summit as a whole, at least to prevent that thread from becoming a "de facto" Cebu thread. Hehehe.. We may also discuss something about the physical preparations although we should avoid discussions that would focus and center on Cebu instead of focusing on the main topic which is the summit itself and the Philippines' hosting of it.

Waaah, I love Transcentral Highway so much especially when it gets very foggy..

The fog in the photo below is very, very minimal. We've experiencedbefore where the road literally disappeared because of the fog and the clouds. We had to stop the vehicle for safety purposes:

As the 12th ASEAN Summit nears, the Cebu Port Authority has also intensified its beautification program by tearing down yesterday nearly 50 stalls inside Pier 3 and by giving P20,000 financial assistance to vendors who signed the waiver.

Two hundred seven vendors who were eking out a living at the city port area, but were evicted yesterday, received around P4.1 million financial aid.

Urban poor consultant Gerry Marquez supervised the tearing down of said structures with hired demolition workers of the CPA.

"Akong role diri mao ang pagklaro kon naa ba gyu'y madawat ang mga vendors kay luoy man sab kon wala'y madala nila nga pabawon. Pero initially duna na'y 90 percent sa mga vendors nga willing kaayo mopahawa," Marquez said.

Those evicted were immediately given the P20,000 financial aid from the CPA.

Officials of the CPA invited ABS-CBN Cebu to witness the handing over of the financial assistance to those who signed the waiver.

"May na lang ni nga dako-dako ang gihatag. Di na gyud mi mobalik sa pier area pero mangita gyud mi og kapuwestohan dinhi sa siyudad," Evangeline Montañez, a vendor at Pier 3, said after the financial aid was handed over to her.

Nilo Rivera, of the operations division of the CPA, said those vendors who refused to sign the agreement and didn't accept the P20,000 aid offer will be facing an ejectment case in court.

"Ug kon duna na'y kaso ug mopabor nato ang korte, dili na gyud sila nato hatagan og financial aid," Rivera said.

The demolition team is set to resume tearing down the remaining stalls at the port area in preparation for the summit next month. - Ramil Ayuman

MORE than a thousand delegates from 40 countries will gather in Cebu for the International Congress on Information and Communications Technology (ICT), which will kick off on Thursday at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino.

The three-day event aims to bring out the best ideas from members of the global academic community and the ICT industry on how to maximize the potentials of the sector and use these in bridging the geographical and technological gap.

One of the main goals of the congress is to harness ICT to help more students in the Philippines and the rest of the world get the education they “rightfully” deserve, according to a statement.

President Arroyo will open the congress.

Participants to the international congress will identify the challenges of integrating ICT in education and share knowledge on global trends that would enhance education in schools as well as provide insights on how teachers can tap the power of information technology through innovative teaching strategies.

The International Congress on ICT is organized by the Commission on Higher Education, Department of Education, Technical Education and Skills Development Authority in partnership with the Global Knowledge Partnership. (JBN)

WHAT are the global trends in exhibitions and conventions? What are the effective marketing strategies that make an event successful? How can the Philippines compete in the international exhibitions and conventions industry?

These and other issues concerning the exhibitions and conventions industry will be discussed during a conference organized by the Philippine Association of Congress/Exhibition Organizers and Suppliers Inc. (Paceos) — in cooperation with the Department of Tourism (DOT), European Chamber of Commerce and the Center for International Trade Exhibition and Mission — today at the Shangril-la’s Mactan Island Resort and Spa.

Paceos was founded in 1981 and currently has over 40 members that include professional exhibitions, conventions and event organizers in the country as well as venue owners, booth contractors, freight forwarders, hotels, travel and tour agencies, airline and transportation companies.

Lobby

Through the years, it has lobbied for the development of the industry and the Philippines, as a whole, into one of the leading Asian destinations for meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions (Mice).

However, while countries like China, Thailand, Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore enjoy a large chunk of the exhibition and conventions business, the Philippines, which is not even included in the Asian loop for Mice destinations, has yet to take advantage of the industry’s outstanding potential benefits.

A research conducted by the Hong Kong Exhibition and Convention Industry Association revealed that Hong Kong exhibition industry’s contribution to the economy grew from $2.4 billion in 2004 to $8.3 billion in 2005. Revenue for this year is expected at $10 billion.

The study said direct expenditures from visitors alone on food, hotel, and shopping reached $846 million, and generated about 47,000 jobs in 2004.

With the construction of a new international exhibition center on Lantau Island, these figures are expected to grow, it added.

“Government should look at these figures and see why investments should be made to develop the industry,” said Paceos president Marisa Nallana. “But first, we should start by building bigger and better exhibition centers.”

Few venues

In the Philippines, there are few world-class venues for exhibitions and conventions. This includes the World Trade Center and the Philippine International Convention Center with a combined space of about 50,000 square meters.

“The ongoing construction of the Cebu International Convention Center is a good addition to our exhibition venues, but still not enough to compete with Hong Kong Exhibition and Convention Center and the Singapore International Convention and Exhibition Center, which have a combined 168,000 square meters (sq. m.) of exhibition space. And this does not include meeting rooms and function halls,” Nallana said.

“All other cities are expanding. Seoul currently has 148,345 sq. m., and Shanghai has 221,700 sq. m. and will increase to 264,588sq. m. and 221,700 sq.m., respectively, by 2010. Thailand is building another exhibition center of 75,000 sq. m. in Chiangmai and this is government led,” she added.

Nallana said government has to realize how far the country’s neighbors have gone. She said “there is a pressing need to start work on a new facility to fight international competition and catch up with the growing momentum in the industry.”

“All they have to consider are the benefits in terms of job generation, business sales, and tax revenues. Think of what those could do for our ailing economy,” she said.

Education

But until government realizes this, Paceos will continue to do whatever it can to help the industry, by holding dialogues with government, working with the DOT and PCVC and organizing conferences and seminars to assist and educate promising organizers in the country.

“This is part of our ongoing education program, which we institutionalized in 2002,” Nallana said. “We’re going back to Cebu because we believe that next to Manila, it is the ideal destination for international events.”

Paceos invited major players in the industry to speak in today’s conference, including: Daniel Corpuz, executive director of the Philippine Convention Venues Corp.; Henry J. Schumacher of the European Chamber of Commerce of The Philippines; Jose Luis U. Yulo Jr.,past president of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce; Michael Alan Hamlin of Teamasia; Estela Quiambao-Dela Rosa of the University of the Philippines Asian Institute Of Tourism; Dexter Deyto of SM Megatrade Hall; and Timothy Wright of Shangri-La’s Mactan Resort and Spa.

Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia will open the conference.

But Sinjin, the reason why this thread is very fast is because we have so many Cebu-based forumers who are so active in posting in this thread, not to mention some non-Cebu based forumers. I don't think we are posting here just to make the thread fast. Even yesterday's "heavy" discussion about the CICC caught me off guard. The next time I logged in, thread 40 na.

I agree that posts that only contain "hi," "good morning," "i'm back," should be deleted but those that involved discussion shouldn't be. Anyway, I haven't seen the posts of fundraiser and the others..


Here's another example though this isn't related to this.. JuanMC said that the SSC-Philippine Forumers Meet thread is becoming a "Cebu Meet" thread with all those postings (be it photo or video) by Slerz about our meets here in Cebu. Why not? After all, we have so many meets here and there's nothing we can do except to post it there. Aside from that, the original Cebu Meet thread I guess was deleted and merged with Philippine Forumers Meet Thread.

No, it's wrong, we have Samahan for those lengthy discussions, that's always the practice even in the past. But then again, we are not too strict about that. Ofcourse we can have offtopic discussions in this thread from time to time, but no to the extent that it would consume pages and pages and pages...

Well, has everybody settled down now? ...Lighten up, you guys. We haven't lost anything. We are still the proud host to the ASEAN Summit and we still have the CICC which Cebu absolutely needs - summit or no summit. After all that heated exchanges and flaired-up tempers...by the way Sinjin, I still appreciate your hard work and thank you for moderating...I still hang on to my belief that the CICC will be part venue of the summit. The November 15 deadline was just a self-imposed deadline and the actual start of the summit is still weeks away. That's plenty of time to fix up the last minute hitches and iron all the wrinkles. I think the CICC is an imposing structure. Cebu needs to finish it to compete with other great asian metropoles. I understand that international convention is a billion dollar business and we need to get a huge piece of that pie. Ciao guys.

Because we are already promoting CEBU to the whole Philippines and to the whole world thru SSC community on the web.

The EMSU Hotel beside Crown Regency and Club Ultima cannot be open even if it's already long overdue because of a family dispute that cannot be determine when it's going to be over. The family cannot sell it because some of the members in the family doesn't agree in selling it. I think it would just be a historical landmark in Cebu for the family who owns it.

^^ ...we have more or less similar case (land dispute on the proposed Imperial Waterpark Resort...i hope it turns out well)

...WOW!!! ...i was a witness of the former Pope's visit in Cebu....i can still recall when i was 9 or 10 y.o. when the last leg of his motorcade was at the old Lahug Airport (now, The Asiatown IT Park) and then he said a mass very solemnly in front of close to a million people.... still very vivid in my memory: ...at the makeshift stage with him were the former dictator Ferdinand Marcos and Imelda Marcos...

Toledo to get P200T for 'Balik Probinsiya'

In line with Mayor Tomas Osmeña's "Balik Probinsiya" program for the 12th ASEAN Summit next month, the city council yesterday authorized the mayor to give a P200,000 financial assistance to Toledo City for the activities it has lined up during the summit.

Earlier, Osmeña approved the activities that Toledo City has lined up for the program, including a concert with pop artist Mark Bautista and Bisrock band Aggressive Studio, "Tiangge-Tiangge sa Toledo", a barbeque festival, and an amateur singing contest.

The "balik probinsiya" program and its city counterpart, the "balik barangay" program, are intended to stir interest among those who come from the provinces but currently live in the city to go home to their respective towns while the summit is going on. President Arroyo has formally declared the summit dates official holidays.

Last August, the city council allocated P2.9 million for the 29 mountain barangays that will avail of the "balik barangay" project.

The budget was proposed by Association of Barangay Councils president Eugenio Faelnar. The cash aids would reportedly be subject to the project proposals, which shall contain the detailed schedule of the barangays' activities from December 10 to 20.

The beneficiary barangays include Adlaon, Agsungot, Bacayan, Babag, Binaliw, Bonbon, Budla-an, Buhisan, Buot-Taup, Busay, Cambinocot, Guba, Kalunasan, Lusaran, Mabini, Malubog, Pamutan, Paril, Pulangbato, Pung-ol, Sibugay, Sapangdaku, Sinsin, Sirao, Sudlon, Tabunan, Tagba-o, Taptap, and Toong.

Osmeña's primary intention with the program is to decongest and maximize security in the city with the arrival of at least P5,000 foreign delegates in the summit come December 11 to 14.

Likewise, Osmeña said this would also give out-of-town businessmen a chance to attract consumers who would attend the activities. The end result, he said, would be an infusion of money into the municipalities and cities.

Meanwhile, the city council yesterday also authorized Osmeña to enter into a MOA with the Sinulog Foundation, Incorporated to present a cultural performance during the gala night of the ASEAN Summit.

Aside from the foreign leaders and ministers that would participate in the summit, at least 1,000 foreign media are also expected to troop to Cebu to cover the big event. - Joeberth M. Ocao

Fishes attract migratory birds to Olango island

OLANGO ISLAND, Cebu — A rich variety of small fishes and sea shells continue to attract thousands of migratory birds from as far as Australia and the US to the bird sanctuary of this tiny, quiet island.

Small varieties of fishes, fingerlings, tiny crabs, varieties of small shells, are the main attraction of Dessert Island, the bird sanctuary located between barangays Pangan-an and Sabang.

These sea varieties seem to have been enticing thousands and thousands of birds all year long to make a stop over in Olango as they journey to other places to escape the winter season of their respective places of origins.

Fish warden and bird sanctuary volunteer Boy Sagarino said flocks of different types of migratory birds have been making a stopover at the sanctuary for food and rest. Among those migratory birds are the Chinese Egrets, Asian Dowitcher, Eurasian Curfew Whimbrel, Red Shanks, and Sandpipers.

Many species of shorebirds and wading birds dash away from the chilly weather in temperate regions. They get off in droves headed for the warm tropics every year during winter and go back the same way in summer, driven by a natural instinct for staying power that has ensured the continuation of their species through the ages, said Sagarino.

Olango, just four kilometers off the east coast of Mactan Island in Cebu, is site of a 920-hectare secluded wetland called the Olango Island Wildlife Sanctuary (OIWS).

The OIWS serves as harbor to thousands of migratory birds from September to November traveling the East Asian Migratory Flyway which includes the Philippines as one of the most significant shorebird and water bird migratory flyways in the world.

A total of 77 species of migratory birds use this flyway, and Olango Island supports 62 percent of this number. Here, they feed and inhabit, enormously at home in their own passive and secluded world in the bosom of nature.

"I hope that the government will continue to safeguard the sanctuary to protect these birds and protect our ecosystems, which these birds are greatly a part of," said Sagarino.

Firm plans to build restaurants at SRP seawall

RESTAURANTS and entertainment joints will soon be a fixture at the Cebu City's South Road Properties if an investment company will push through with its planned P200-million infrastructure project.

Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña yesterday said he met with representatives of Filinvest Land Inc. in Manila to finalize the layout of the company's planned construction of 18 food and liquor stalls in a portion of the seawall of the SRP.

“Filinvest is planning to construct three structures. That will be considered a fun thing, something that will show that the SRP is a highly desirable area. The in place in Cebu,” he said.

The mayor has long envisioned the operation of restaurants and entertainment joints at the SRP.
He said in an earlier interview that Cebu's lack of an entertainment strip is one of the downside in its marketing campaign to attract tourists.

Osmeña said entertainment joints located away from each other is not very attractive to partygoers.

Filinvest is designing seaside stalls that will be leased to restaurant and restobar operators who wanted to open businesses at the SRP, Osmeña yesterday told Cebu Daily News.

Various entrepreneurs, Osmeña said, have already inquired of stall rentals.

Osmeña, however, said that before construction will begin, he wanted to clarify with Filinvest how the city government will be compensated from their construction project.

“There are some legal questions that we have to consider,” he said.

The city government, he said, may lease to Filinvest the portion of the SRP that they need for the construction project. An option is for the investment company and the city government to agree on a sharing scheme.

Under the sharing scheme, a certain percentage of the stall rentals that Filinvest will collect will go to the city's coffers, Osmeña said.

“If the operation of the stalls will be successful, this will be a source of income for the city government. I'm willing to put the city to risk in doing business (with Filinvest),” the mayor said.

It could be in the NRA bai because the different City Government Departments holding their offices at the Robinsons' lot are given two years to vacate, so maybe by 2008 they will start wit the construction.

...ambot kaha karon, the last time i went there sa basement to buy my boat ticket for Iloilo (backpacking alone to Boracay...hehhe!) was in early 2002 ...kung mopili ka og "X" VCD, pasak-on gyud ka sa taas pero grabe na gyud nga wala ma-maintain pero ang design sa sulod is nindot gyud particularly kung pasaka sa taas... wala ko nakasulod gyud sa sinehan pero i remember as a kid, this theater was fully carpeted... but i think karon, gigamit na ni para simbahan sa mga "alive, alive forevermore"

Father man daw ni John Gokongwei ang owner.. I hope his foundation will take notice of it. Tapos when he died, it passed on to new owners..

If only we can contact his foundation and propose something for its rehabilitation.

Cebu's Sinulog is now participating in the International Tourism Carnival in Hainan, China which was just opened this morning. Some 41 tourism and cultural activities hosted in major cities and counties will participate.

The Hainan province is looking forward to opening flights between the two provinces (Hainan and Cebu) in order to promote tourism. Hainan is also keen on Cebu as a source for teachers to train them on the English Language.

Anyway, I was able to ride a 14D Jeepney (Ayala) a while ago.

It had a Plasma TV (around 17 inches diagonal) which kept playing advertisements of People Support and ASEAN Summit over and over again.

If I'm not mistaken, the supplier/owner of the TV is "Techno Ads" and you can have your company advertised by calling a certain mobile number.

CICC gets 14 days more, till Nov. 30thBy Minerva B. Gerodias

THE contractors will need at most 14 days starting today to completely finish the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC).

Yesterday was the self-imposed deadline of the Capitol to finish the P450-million facility, which will be the main venue of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) Summit next month.

The building is 100 percent finished but finishing touches and retouches need to be done, said Project Monitoring Office (PMO) head Ernesto Viernes.

“Nahuman na ang building ug nag-retouching mi. Way building nga mahuman og Nov. 15 unya manguli na ang mga tawo. Naa na sila kay maghimo ug retoke (The building is done and we are doing retouching),” architect Manuel Guanzon said during yesterday’s visit at the CICC.

The retouches include painting work and reinstallation of damaged ceilings.

When asked about his P1.5-million bet that the CICC will be finished by Nov. 15, Guanzon said in jest, “Ako lang tong ibangka sa media kay wa man nidawat (I will use it to treat the media because nobody accepted the bet).”

Former senator John Osmeña took Guanzon’s bet but he set conditions that were untenable.
Viernes said that by Nov. 23, all the finishing touches and retouches will be done.

They will start rolling out the carpet, which is about 5,000 square meters, the next day. It will take at most six days.

The tile works is already 99.5 percent complete, brick works at the parking lot and driveway is already finished, while the brick works at the flag area is 95 percent complete.

The landscaping is 98 percent complete, while the electrical connections are 90 percent finished.

The water feature at the lobby is already finished while the fountain in front of the building will be finished by next week. “We have very, very substantially completed the facility considering the very short time that we have been given.
This is in fact a monumental feat and the Cebuanos have shown what they are capable of,” Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia said yesterday.

After the inspection, she visited Cebu Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal to apprise him of the status of the CICC and to thank him for praying for the success of the construction as well as for the Asean summit.

“I am convinced it will be finished. That’s what we’re praying for every after mass,” the cardinal said.

Vidal said he was surprised by the reports that came out since, from the pictures the governor showed him, he saw that the facility is ready.

He hopes to visit the CICC soon.

“I think we, Cebuanos, should always be aware that in the last analysis, we will be the beneficiary (of the CICC). It’s a feather on our cap,” he told reporters. “The whole Cebuano family will benefit from this one.”

Garcia had said that she set Nov. 15 as deadline to give time to do the corrections, which is normal for every construction.

By Nov. 30, she said the facility will be complete up to the “last blade of grass.”
As to the report that the CICC will no longer be used for the summit, Garcia criticized the media outlets that carried the headlines that the summit was moved to Shangri-la’s Mactan Island Resort, when the same story contained the denial of the source on the transfer of venue.

“If he has already corrected that report, I still wonder why the headlines read that it was still moved…. All of this media frenzy about the CICC has given us a very clear picture of just how responsible or irresponsible the press can be,” Garcia said.

Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita called up the governor yesterday to clarify the reports about the change of the venue.

Razon was quoted by foreign media as saying that all the activities of the summit will already be held in Shangri-la because of the concerns of some foreign delegates that the CICC might not be finished.

However, Razon, when sought for clarification, said he was just misquoted by the foreign media.

Ermita said the events in the CICC have actually been increased from 86 to 91.
He said a change in venue was never discussed in Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting, which mostly tackled the preparations for the Asean summit.

However, he said “you can be very sure that for such a very big undertaking, that there is always Plan B. A big affair like that siguradong merong (there is surely a) Plan B but definitely the Asean summit will push through.”

In a separate interview, an official from Shangri-la’s Mactan Island Resort said they “cannot accommodate” all meetings of the 12th Asean summit if scheduled activities at the CICC will moved to the resort.

“We don’t have enough rooms to accommodate all the meetings due to limited space and manpower,” said Shangri-la’s director of communications Sharon Samarista.

Samarista said “important meetings” will be held in the resort but declined to give further details.

She said Shangri-la “is ready” for the summit. The resort has recently upgraded its facilities, including the renovation of its 188-room Ocean Wing.

The resort will still maintain the same number of security personnel, but both the Philippine National Police and the Presidential Security Group will take “center stage” during the summit, Samarista said.

Garcia clarified that from the start, it was never claimed that all of the activities will be held at the CICC because there are other venues for the more than 90 meetings in Cebu.

She also criticized a broadcaster “who claimed that not one minister will set foot on the CICC.”

“I will not even try to dispute him because he seems to speak with such authority and with finality. He probably may have already replaced Ambassador (Marciano) Paynor (as head of the national organizing committee),” she said.

“To the doomsayers, pwede usa di lang usa daghan ug yawyaw kay puno man lang ni sa pressure and it really does not accomplish anything productive. It just causes a lot of kuryente…. Give us a break. I’m not asking for much, but just one encouraging word. Ayaw lang duhaa kay basin it is too much to ask,” she said. (With MMM/JECT of Superbalita)

Anyway, I was able to ride a 14D Jeepney (Ayala) a while ago.

It had a Plasma TV (around 17 inches diagonal) which kept playing advertisements of People Support and ASEAN Summit over and over again.

If I'm not mistaken, the supplier/owner of the TV is "Techno Ads" and you can have your company advertised by calling a certain mobile number.

WISH GRANTED BY SSC CEBU PEEPS

Because we are already promoting CEBU to the whole Philippines and to the whole world thru SSC community on the web.

The EMSU Hotel beside Crown Regency and Club Ultima cannot be open even if it's already long overdue because of a family dispute that cannot be determine when it's going to be over. The family cannot sell it because some of the members in the family doesn't agree in selling it. I think it would just be a historical landmark in Cebu for the family who owns it.

still remember what i told u about emsu building? my friend is one of the grandchildren of the patriarch of this chinese family. according to him, the family dispute is as old as him na cguro or older than him and until now, the family could not agree on what to do with this idle property. they only agreed on one thing: MCDO Jones. I think the whole clan loves McDo! :lol:

its san antonio de padua church in tuburan...ive been there, and that little town has one of the loveliest seaside views in the province...too bad its been getting bad publicity as a rebel nest, however, a visit would prove this worng, tuburan is just as peaceful as anywhere in the province (probably even more peaceful)

I wonder why they are putting those concrete poles on both sides of the road. I've noticed also that the poles are too close to each. It's my first time seeing such.

If you've noticed on high-voltage electric poles, they're only confined to one side of a road/street. Maybe there's another use for these.

Or maybe dabert was right, they might be using these for street lamps but aren't these too high and too close to each other?

Firm plans to build restaurants at SRP seawall

RESTAURANTS and entertainment joints will soon be a fixture at the Cebu City's South Road Properties if an investment company will push through with its planned P200-million infrastructure project.

Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña yesterday said he met with representatives of Filinvest Land Inc. in Manila to finalize the layout of the company's planned construction of 18 food and liquor stalls in a portion of the seawall of the SRP.

“Filinvest is planning to construct three structures. That will be considered a fun thing, something that will show that the SRP is a highly desirable area. The in place in Cebu,” he said.

The mayor has long envisioned the operation of restaurants and entertainment joints at the SRP.
He said in an earlier interview that Cebu's lack of an entertainment strip is one of the downside in its marketing campaign to attract tourists.

Osmeña said entertainment joints located away from each other is not very attractive to partygoers.

Filinvest is designing seaside stalls that will be leased to restaurant and restobar operators who wanted to open businesses at the SRP, Osmeña yesterday told Cebu Daily News.

Various entrepreneurs, Osmeña said, have already inquired of stall rentals.

Osmeña, however, said that before construction will begin, he wanted to clarify with Filinvest how the city government will be compensated from their construction project.

“There are some legal questions that we have to consider,” he said.

The city government, he said, may lease to Filinvest the portion of the SRP that they need for the construction project. An option is for the investment company and the city government to agree on a sharing scheme.

Under the sharing scheme, a certain percentage of the stall rentals that Filinvest will collect will go to the city's coffers, Osmeña said.

“If the operation of the stalls will be successful, this will be a source of income for the city government. I'm willing to put the city to risk in doing business (with Filinvest),” the mayor said.

Local IT firm to invest P100M on data center operations

Local IT firm Total Information Management Corp. (TIM) will invest over P100 million for its data center operations next year as part of the company’s efforts to expand its data business and provide better services to its customers.

TIM officials said part of the investment will be used to expand the company’s existing data center operations in Alabang, Muntinlupa and for other purposes including other projects in the pipeline.

TIM has already invested some P90 million for the construction of a data center in Cebu City which will open by the first quarter next year. About P20 million to P30 million will be used to construct the facility inside a technology park and P60 million for the data center equipment, company officials said.

"We view Cebu as a good investment opportunity. We believe the Cebu facility will further increase our business prospects," TIM vice president for finance Salvador Aque said.

TIM has partnered with Strategic Synergy Inc. for the Cebu data center. Strategic Synergy will market the company’s business recovery service.

"The facility will have an open platform and it won’t depend on only one telecom provider. Our facility will definitely help businesses because it is now expensive for them to get their requirements from Manila," Aque said.

He added that TIM is targeting small and medium sized companies in the Visayas area as possible customers.

The TIM official reiterated the importance of businesses having uninterrupted service on real time mode from the back up services of TIM especially during unexpected power interruptions.

TIM, a 100 percent Filipino-owned IT company, was established in 1985 and is now a leading technology services company providing hardware, hardware maintenance, software and system integration, business recovery and outsourcing services for some of the country’s largest enterprises.

This, as the sector lobbies to make the country one of the leading Asian destinations for meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions (Mice).

The Philippine Convention and Visitors Corp. (PCVC) has identified Cebu as a prime destination for both national and international events.

It revealed that Cebu is the country’s top international convention destination with a total of 102 events in 2004. This is followed by Metro Manila with 73 events, Iloilo with six and Laguna with five.

Numbers

In the same year, Cebu has a total number of 4,339 national conventions.

The figure is only second to Metro Manila with 6,658. Other destinations include Iloilo with 947 events, Pampanga with 525 and Zamboanga del Sur with 371.

“Cebu, next to Manila, is a potential investment and tourist destination in Asia, but the country in general, has limited trade fair facilities,” said Henry Schumacher, European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (ECCP) executive vice president.

While the construction of the Cebu International Convention Center is a “good addition” to the country’s exhibition venues, it is “not enough” to compete with exhibition spaces in Singapore, Hong Kong, Bangkok, and India, Philippine Association of Convention/Exhibition Organizers and Suppliers Inc. (Paceos) president Marisa Nallana said in a statement.

Paceos said the Philippines has a combined exhibition space of only 50,000 square meters (sq. m.), including the World Trade Center and the Philippine International Convention Center.

Meanwhile, Seoul has 148,345 sq. m. of exhibition space while Shanghai has 221,700 sq. m. Thailand will build an exhibition center with 75,000 sq. m.

According to Schumacher, the Philippines can attract the foreign market for Mice by putting “determined effort” in the field of performing arts, e-services, wellness, medical services, retirement and healthcare.

Advantage

“The Philippines’ advantage, when it comes to ICT (information and communication technology), is that we are already considered an important hub in IT (information technology)-enabled services, in call centers, BPO (business process outsourcing) and animation in Asia. And by focusing on the health and wellness sector through the hosting of an international congress, the country will be a haven for medical tourism,” he said.

He said growth in these sectors will address the problem of brain drain, or the exodus of skilled Filipinos for better paying overseas jobs.

Schumacher also raised the need for industry players to market exhibits and similar events as “distinctively different from China” and create “foreign strategic partners.”

“Can the Philippines do it alone? No. A strategic partner is a must to drive things forward, faster. It will add the prestige and the customer base of the partner to the venture, thus attract more international buyers,” he said.

Schumacher spoke on the latest issues in the exhibition and convention industry during a conference organized by Paceos, Department of Tourism, PCVC, ECCP and the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (Citem) last Wednesday at the Shangri-la’s Mactan Island Resort.

Paceos, in its bid to revitalize Philippine tourism, has been rallying to standardize the level of competencies in the exhibition and convention industry through seminars and conferences.

Founded in 1981, it now has 43 member-organizations composed of leading convention and event organizers and their affiliate industries.

Cebu business chamber gets ISO for quality management

THE Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. (CCCI) has achieved international certification for its quality management system.

It is the first business chamber in the country, and the fourth worldwide, to gain ISO (International Organization for Standardization) 9001:2000 certification.

“This is a major milestone in the chamber’s development that we can all be proud of,” CCCI president Francis Monera said.

Other business chambers that are ISO-certified are the Thai Chamber of Commerce in Bangkok, Thailand; Kerala Chamber of Commerce in South India; and Ontario Chamber of Commerce in Canada.

An ISO 9001 certification indicates that the quality management system (QMS) of a company or an organization is at par with international standards.

Innovative

“This reinforces our commitment to deliver high quality, innovative services that meet or exceed customers’ requirements. Our having passed the ISO 9001 standards will effectively inspire our member-companies, comprised primarily by small and medium enterprises, to become competitive in the global market,” Monera said during CCCI’s general membership meeting at the Cebu Country Club last Wednesday.

Companies in Cebu, especially those constantly dealing with multinational companies (MNCs), have been advised to acquire ISO-certification.

Monera said the CCCI is now in the process of developing an ISO service for its members through the conduct of awareness trainings and related activities.

The move to certify the chamber’s QMS began last year. Documentation started in May 2005 and staff trainings on ISO were conducted from November 2005 to May 2006.

Monera received the ISO 9001:2001 certificate from German Development Service (DED) expert Nikolaus Stumpf last Wednesday.

The chamber also inducted new member firms. (JBN)

Anyway, I passed by Jones Ave. and P. del Rosario this morning on my way to work. I saw PLDT and VECO employees fixing overhead wirings in order for it to at least look not so annoying.

I hope that by next year, the city's new ordinance will be implemented that those overhead wirings will be buried underneath our roads.
