pero basin gyud diay pool siya, distinctly cebuano, in the sense na while in cebu, it's easy mix business with pleasure, a mall beside swimming pools (murag mall tupad ug resort), just like cebu, a city right beside one of the country's best beaches and resorts...

^^yeah! Cebu creates magic.

And not only that...in Cebu..Magic is Reality - not a mere fairy tale!

I've witnessed a lot of Magic here in Cebu!

- Cebu International Convention Center
- The subway in SRP
- The Marcelo Fernan Bridge
- The SRP itself
- the rapid changes in Cebu's skyline
- the extreme positive improvements in Cebu's thoroughfares

...to name a few

all i can say is... WOW! I'm proud to be living today in Cebu! Where magic do come true!

it's Tudela bai...my lolo's dad used to be the mayor of that town...it's the least developed of all of camotes' towns since the durano's are not very popular over there...

if you can notice, there are two churches sitting beside each other, the 'curvy' one was actually built by a previous parish priest who was also a frustrated architect, however it wasnt put to good use since its layout didnt fit with the liturgical requirements or something like that...the current parish priest is planning to convert it into a gymnasium (tudela is the only camotes town without a gymnasium, thanks of course to politics...) after an engineer checks its structural integrity...you should have paid the parish priest a visit, the guy is very hospitable, and the convento is a perfect and well preserved example of spanish-era architecture...

^^ - Aww... ok. Sorry. Thanks for the correction and the history lesson.. Hehe... Yeah, we were wondering what happened to that curvy church. You should have been tour guide... our guide was too moody and he would answer each question with either yes, no, or ambot ngano. hehe :D

Hmm.. just a suggestion for tourism in that area... maybe they should regulate the price for the tour and organize it more. It seems they have no standard range of tour rates... and when we got one that was pretty cheap, the tour guide tried to raise the price at the end of our tour (but sorry, deal's a deal right). :okay:

and let's start with another Cebu good news.....this move will surely give another edge to Cebu's IT industry.

Career center to be set up
Sunstar Cebu
November 21, 2006

TO HELP ensure jobs for information and communication technology (ICT) graduates, the private-sector led Cebu Educational Development Foundation for Information Technology (Cedf-it) will soon launch its Career Link Services Center (CLSC).

“ICT is a fast-moving industry, and the CLSC will enrich our quality of graduates through career guidance and link them to the manpower requirements of the industry,” Cedf-it executive director Bonifacio Belen said.

In a statement furnished to Sun.Star Cebu, graduates and potential applicants of Cedf-it member-schools can easily find job opportunities in Cebu through the Online Career Linkage site, where industry members post their manpower requirements either for regular jobs, contractual projects or on-the-job training needs.

Programs

CLSC will offer programs on career counseling, job fair, talent data base, job ads bulletin, career orientation program, graduates tracking, and research and development.

For career counseling, graduates may seek the advice of a Cedf-it career counselor for orientation on career link services that suit the applicant’s need.

In addition, the talent database—a compilation of contact information of Cedf-it member-school graduates, including relevant information like contact numbers, course, grade-point average, and professor affiliations—will help prospective employers generate more relevant information from the applicants.

Meanwhile, the graduates tracking program aims to increase the alumni contacts database and distribute Cedf-it updates.

Belen said Cedf-it is conducting a survey on the most common jobs taken by graduates of Cebu, and the perceived needs of today’s graduates.

Initiatives

Bridging the gap between the supply of graduates and the demand of the industry, other Cedf-it initiatives include Philippine IT General Certification Examination (Phil-IT GCE) and the Bridge Courses.

The second Phil-IT GCE, which is a computer-based exam, was administered simultaneously last Sept. 30 to 114 ICT graduates of six participating Cedfit-member universities and 28 others from the private sector.

In a separate interview, Cedf-it senior adviser Fred Kintanar said the bridge course-training module is a “cost-effective” initiative for companies to hire quality employees.

Belen said Cedf-it has lined up several projects for next year.

UPVCC improves IT course for Cebu’s growth
By Malou M. Mozo
Sun.Star Correspondent

RESPONDING to the latest trend in information, communication and technology (ICT), a local state university is eyeing to make its Computer Science (com sci) program a “center for excellence” in Central Visayas.

“Seeing the growth in the ICT sector and IT development in Cebu, the university wants to contribute to its growth by creating new knowledge. Since com sci is a very pervasive discipline, it will be the first among the university’s programs to be developed,” Dr. Enrique Avila, University of the Philippines in the Visayas-Cebu College (UPVCC) dean said.

While the com sci is currently under the Natural Science division, Avila said the move to have it as a separate department has been approved by the UP system “in principle.”

Developing

According to Avila, UPVCC will focus on the different com sci areas, like ICT development and software engineering, while plans to add a master’s degree in com sci is now in the pipeline.

“Developing our com sci program will create an interweaving relationship among the other divisions and, as a whole, contribute to new knowledge in the different fields,” he told Sun.Star Cebu.

UPVCC currently has four divisions—Management, Natural Science, Social Science and Humanities.

“While our graduates are also known in different fields, like mass communication, management, biology, etcetera, we won’t be ignoring this except that we will improve our current offering by graduate programs,” Avila said.

He revealed that UPVCC will introduce an Urban and Regional Planning course in the Management division and a Geographic Information System course in the Political Science division, in addition to the industrial design course now being offered by the Humanities division.

Streamline

“All these new courses will require transportation network using ICT, so now it’s an inter-disciplinary relationship among divisions. Urban and Regional planning, for example, will be the first outside Luzon. It’s a niche,” he said.

“Urban and regional planning will streamline to studies on natural heritage, which will be beneficial to making Cebu a tourism destination in Asia,” he added.

Capitalizing on the “bright” prospects of Cebu’s furniture industry, Avila revealed that the Fine Arts department is now forging ties with the Cebu Furniture Industries Foundation so graduates will impart new knowledge on furniture design.

“The industrial design course will be an Asian center for design,” Avila added.

Likewise, he said the UPVCC faculty, staff and students are “looking forward” to the college’s new developments.

Meanwhile, UP president Ermilinda Roman stressed that the development of UP Cebu is already part of her 10-point agenda.

“What we would like is a system where universities are unequal only in age, size and experience but the quality of faculty, students and academic program is the same. So in our case, we would like to develop UP Cebu because Cebu is a center and we’d like to contribute to the development of the region through the college. So if Cebu is the focus, then we allocate resources,” she said in a statement

PB okays P65M extra without any question

THE Cebu Provincial Board (PB) yesterday approved the supplemental budget that includes P65 million for the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC), after Vice Gov. Greogrio Sanchez Jr. quoted Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia as promising that this will be the last supplemental proposal for the CICC.

Nobody filed a formal objection, but PB Member Jose Ma. Gastardo said he will not join the approval because of some “reservations.”

Surprisingly, the CICC was not the center of the discussion on the P82-million allocation. Instead, several questions were raised on the appropriation for a P8-million purchase of a site for solid waste management in Carmen town and the on P9-million budget for a lot in Minglanilla for the relocation of occupants of Province-owned lots.

The supplemental budget was passed on first, second and third reading after Garcia certified it as urgent.

Gastardo would have wanted a deferment, but Sanchez pointed out that the Capitol has to pay its obligations to the contractors who are working on the CICC, one of the venues of the Asean summit next month.

During the deliberation, Gastardo asked if the P65 million will already cover the whole cost for the CICC, whose initial approved allocation was P450 million.

“Is this the end of it? The Cebuano public would want to know the entire cost until its completion. The people of Cebu are wondering when this will end,” said Gastardo.

The initial allocation for the CICC was the P250 million that was re-aligned from what would have been a multi-use center that was then called the megadome.

When the need for a conventional center was raised for next month’s summit, the Capitol passed a supplemental budget of P200 million, but Sanchez explained that this was just to start the project as plans have yet to be completed then.

“The P515 million is the end of it. (The governor) will not ask anymore for another supplemental budget. This will be the final budget for the CICC. If there will be any more adjustment, it will be very minimal and she can get it from somewhere else,” Sanchez told the PB.

Sanchez last month said that from a contractor’s point of view, the facility would cost at least P650 million and would even reach P800 million or P1 billion, depending on the material that will be used. But he clarified that from a government’s point of view, there are many ways of cutting cost.

Gastardo also yesterday asked about a provision in the new law on government procurement that states variation from project cost must not exceed 10 percent.

The P65-million additional budget for the CICC is 14.4 percent of the original budget.
But Sanchez explained that what the law means is not more than 10 percent of an existing contract. Cost overruns that exceed 10 percent will need a supplement contract, he said.

Gastardo also questioned the P8-million item that will be used to buy 20 hectares of land in Carmen for the Capitol’s solid waste management facility that will serve the cities of Mandaue, Lapu-Lapu and northern municipalities.

Questions were also raised on the P9 million for the purchase of a 1.5-hectare land in Minglanilla that will be a relocation site for settlers of lands that the Capitol wants to recover. (JPM)

Serge pledges P150M to build 200 classrooms

USING opposition Sen. Sergio “Serge” Osmeña III’s P150-million pork barrel, Cebu City Hall will build at least 200 classrooms that can be used next year, if President Arroyo releases the fund.

Mayor Tomas Osmeña said his brother already pledged to help the City’s school building projects, but it depends on whether the President will release his Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF).

“Senator Osmeña will give P150 million and I’m putting it all on school buildings but I have to convince Malacañang to release it because if you are opposition, Malacañang doesn’t release the PDAF,” he said yesterday.

Even with the assistance, Osmeña said City Hall will still be short of P150 million in school building projects.

“The assistance will be for this year so I will just ask the President, ‘Can you just release the PDAF of Serge because it’s going to Cebu City’,” he further said.

In a phone interview, the mayor’s consultant on education Joy Augustus Young said they already identified nine school sites that will benefit from the senator’s PDAF.

The amount, he said, will allow City Hall to build at least 200 classrooms in two public high schools and seven elementary schools.

Among the barangays that will have new school buildings are Tisa, Talamban, Tejero, Labangon, Mambaling, Guadalupe and Quiot.

First priority

“These are the critical areas in terms of classroom shortage. We can’t start to bid out the projects because the money is not out yet but the President has always been helping Cebu that’s why I’m very confident that the President will approve it,” Young told Sun.Star Cebu.

Young said the mayor had wanted that only the schools identified as first priority will be given new classrooms but because some of the projects were already bid out or constructed, second priority schools were included as beneficiaries.

Senators

In a recent trip to Manila, the mayor sought the help of senators to fund the City’s projects but so far, only his brother pledged to help, he said.

Previously, though, Sens. Francis Pangilinan, Pia Cayetano and Ramon Magsaysay Jr. have assisted Cebu City in concreting of roads, waterworks and school building projects.

“We’ll give an accounting to the people of who among the senators have helped and what they have done for Cebu. It’s up to the people to decide what to do with the other senators,” the mayor added. (LCR)

Growers have 400T flowers

By Linette C. Ramos
Sun.Star Staff Reporter

THEIR job is not a bed of roses, at least not yet.

But once all 400,000 potted flowering plants are moved to the streets, parks and the city’s center islands, agricultural technologist Paz Eronico can heave a sigh of relief.

Eronico and 27 other Cebu City Central Nursery employees have painstakingly planted and nurtured the seeds of at least 12 assorted flowering plants that were imported from Taiwan.

The flowers are now in full bloom at the 1.6-hectare nursery, waiting to be used for Cebu City Hall’s beautification project for the coming Asean summit.

Even before the gathering of international leaders here, the nursery is visited by foreigners and locals to view the rows of petunia, marigold, vinca, zinnia, celosia, gaillarda, salvia, lantana, candle plant, sunflower and buttoners, among other flowers.

Pressured

“We are so pressured by this project, especially when the plants were not yet flowering. We were afraid that we would not be able to produce the flowers. We planted 400,000. Now, we just need to maintain them,” Eronico told Sun.Star Cebu.

She recalled that when the P2-million project started in August, the agriculturists and other workers had to attend to the meticulous process of planting the seeds.

They had to see to it that there was no dumping off of the seeds, or the buds do not wilt even before they bloom.

4 days

For the agriculturists, the planting of the imported seeds in seed boxes proved to be the most critical point of growing the flowers since it is at this stage when the seeds are likely to dry up.

It took four days before the seeds became seedlings, and another two to three weeks before they were ready to be transplanted to the pots with compost, garden soil and coconut coir.

The employees at the nursery attended to the greenhouses and seed boxes day in and day out, waiting for the first sign of a bud.

With barely three weeks left before the summit, Eronico said their hard work is starting to pay off now that some of the center islands in the city’s major thoroughfares have been landscaped.

“This is the first time that we are mass producing flowers. It is a big undertaking but we consider this as our contribution in making the city beautiful for the summit,” she added.

The flowers will be displayed on the center islands of the ceremonial route for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) summit, including Osmeña Blvd., Juan Luna Ave. and Imus Road.

City Agriculturist Joselito Baclayon said that after the summit, they will teach the flower growers in the mountain barangays to plant the imported seeds so they can make a living from the City’s project.

They may also venture into selling some of the flowers to the public at a very affordable price after the summit, he added.

State university mulls over P250M infra work
By Malou M. Mozo
Sun.Star Correspondent

TO provide quality education to the masses, a local state university has drafted a campus renewal plan that will be implemented before its centennial celebration in 2018.

“The theme of the whole renewal project is to maintain a UP (University of the Philippines) tradition of excellence but meeting the challenges of modernity,” said Dr. Enrique Avila of University of the Philippines in the Visayas Cebu College (UPVCC).

The campus renewal plan involves the renovation of UPVCC’s existing infrastructure, such as the administration, undergraduate, high school, and arts and science buildings; library; and dormitories.

The UPVCC also plans to construct a seven- to 10-story graduate studies building, facilities on product design and communications, faculty dorm, gymnasium, grandstand, soccer field, campus hotel or shopping center, and student and faculty housing.

Renovation of existing buildings will cost the university about P30 million and work is expected to be completed in the next five years.

Cost

The construction of the graduate studies building, on the other hand, is expected to cost about P250 million.

“The whole property of UP Cebu is a donation from the government and we want to use the entire property for educational purposes. The campus will be an open gallery,” Avila said.

Avila told Sun.Star Cebu that the plan will be implemented when UPVCC will be able to finally reclaim its estimated 12-hectare property in Gorordo Avenue, Cebu City from “informal settlers.”

According to UPVCC supervising administrative officer Alsidry Sharif, the university is only occupying 60 percent of the total lot area in Lahug.

“We are currently profiling those informal settlers who will be relocated and compensated,” Sharif said.

He added that informal settlers are “amenable” to the plan.

Avila said UPVCC has agreed to sell “in principle” its five-hectare lot in Talisay City.

Avila also revealed that the proposed campus renewal plan would rely heavily on funding from the private and public sectors, apart from the university’s own budget.

External support

“We will need external support. By building on good academic programs, I’m optimistic the support will follow,” he said.

In an earlier interview, Avila expressed “delight” in UP president Emerlinda Roman’s 10-point agenda that includes the plan to develop UP Cebu within her six-year term.

“We have long been neglected, it’s time to turn things around,” Avila said.

Roman, in a statement furnished to Sun.Star Cebu, assured that the UP system will contribute to the development of Central Visayas by developing its UP Cebu campus.

University of the Philippines, the premier state university of the country, will celebrate its centennial celebration on 2008

Luxury hotel chain coming back to RP

Published on Page A1 of the November 22, 2006 issue of the Philippine Daily Inquirer

SINGAPORE -- A luxury boutique hotel chain, dubbed by a Filipino tourism official as at the top of its class, is returning to the Philippines more than a decade after it pulled out of the country.

Owners of the Banyan Tree chain gave one reason for their change of heart: The Philippines is a “very different” country now.

Tourism Secretary Ace Durano yesterday said that Banyan Tree executives would scout for places in the Central Visayas next year to set up one or more resorts.

The announcement of Banyan Tree’s decision followed a meeting in Singapore on Monday between Ho Kwon Ping, the hotel’s executive chair, and President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

A boutique hotel provides luxurious personalized services and facilities, unlike the general service provided by large hotel chains. Its size is relatively smaller, often ranging from three to 100 rooms, furnished with a certain theme and style.

This year, Banyan Tree’s branch in Phuket, Thailand, landed on the premium lists of hotels in the world, such as the 500 World’s Best in Asia, Top 100 Hotels in the World (33rd) and Best Overseas Spa, according to the Banyan Tree website.

“Their category is boutique resorts and they’re the number one brand in Asia,” Durano said.

He said Banyan Tree was in the league of classy hotels with the Aman group of resorts, which runs Amanpulo, the most expensive resort in the country, which charges more than $1,000 a night.

Banyan Tree usually charges $400 to $800 a night, with one villa in its resorts costing P10 to P50 million to build, Durano said.

“These are the really high-end big resorts. It shouldn’t be more than a hundred rooms per resort, the really ultra luxury type,” he said.

“If that brand will come to the Philippines (and invest in Palawan), it will put Palawan on the international tourism map,” Durano added.

Ho said his group would look at Palawan and Cebu but declined to give specific areas to prevent real estate prices in these areas from soaring.

Some History

Misamis Oriental used to be a part of Cebu. In 1818, it became a "conregimento" comprised of 4 "partidos" or divisions; namely, Partido de MIsamis, Partido de Dapitan, Partido de Cagayan and Partido de Catarman. During the latter part of the 19th century, Misamis was one of the 6 districts of Mindanao, and later, one of the seven districts in Mindanao and Sulu at the close of the Spanish era with Cagayan de Misamis, now Cagayan de Oro, as its capital. When it was still a part of the district of Cebu, there were 12 Spaniards and 9 Filipinos who successively served as "governadore" with Mayor Carabello as the first governor in 1874.

Legislative Act. No. 3537, approved in November 2, 1929, divided the province of Misamis into two provinces due to the lack of geographical contiguity: Misamis Oriental and Misamis Occidental. However, it was not until 10 years later that the division was implemented by an amendment, Act. No. 3777, adopted on November 28, 1939. When Misamis Oriental became a separate province, Don Gregorio Pelaez was its first Governor. Since then, there were 14 past governors who were elected and appointed by operation of law.

The earliest known settlers of the territory were the Negritoes. Centuries later, Malay colonists with Mongoloid features, fought the natives for the control of the rich Cagayan River coastal plains. The struggle for possession has finally won the native Visayans over the Bukidnons. In the 1500s most of the Mindanao area had fallen under the Muslim and the inhabitants were converted into Islam. As part of Mindanao, the people of the territory were obliged to pay tribute to the Muslim rule.

SM to open 24 cinemas in 2007
By Jeffrey O. Valisno
Source: News Clippings: BusinessWorld

...Meanwhile, Mr. Camaligan said the company is studying the possibility of opening a third IMAX theater in Cebu within the next two to three years. “We think two IMAX movie houses would be enough for Metro Manila, so we are looking at putting up our third one in the Visayas, possibly in Cebu. But nothing is final yet,” he said. SM Prime Holdings Vice-President for Finance and Administration Jeffrey C. Lim earlier told reporters that the company has allotted about P5 billion for the construction of new malls to be opened next year...

Cebu Top INternational event Destination in country

PLAYERS in the exhibitions and conventions industry are looking at Cebu as the next venue of international events.

This, as the sector lobbies to make the country one of the leading Asian destinations for meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions (Mice).

The Philippine Convention and Visitors Corp. (PCVC) has identified Cebu as a prime destination for both national and international events.

It revealed that Cebu is the country’s top international convention destination with a total of 102 events in 2004. This is followed by Metro Manila with 73 events, Iloilo with six and Laguna with five.

Maybe because most of the companies and banks and industries have their main offices in MM, that's why they hold most of their convention there. But for international events wherein most of the participants are based outside the country, they come here to Cebu to convene. I think that's more important.

with the first(and only) mall in the country to have ISO accreditation in three management standards, environment, health and safety, and quality. ayala center cebu

with the third business chamber in the world to be ISO certified. the cebu chamber of commerce and industry.

the thirteenth most desired/preffered BPO investment destination in the world.

the place with the most number of INTERnational conventions in the country

utilizing the most advanced lighting system in the world (soon) in osmeña boulevard/jones.

and dont forget to relax in one of the best spa in asia, the badian island resort and spa.

the list could go on and on and on. cebu has already proven itself in the national arena, its time to move a notch higher,to be globally competitive. what we are seeing today is only the beginning folks!

With that! Don't blame us cebuanos nor blame the foreign tourists nor blame Cebu itself. Cebu is just a gifted place. Gifted with beauty, history and especially the people. There's nothing a cebuano can do but continue to make it beautiful, clean and appealing to the locals and to the tourists. There's nothing a non-cebuano can do but explore it like the foreign tourists, fall in love with it like the bigfoot's president Michael Gleissner and of course invest in it like Lexmark and the rest of the foreign investors.

With that! We:cheers: to that!

Excellent article...

Again, Cebu

Lito Gutierrez, Nov 22, 2006
CEBU – The Garci tapes scandal notwithstanding, Gloria Macapagal Arroyo with nary a doubt had the votes to win the presidency in the last elections. (The brouhaha was about the call, not the count.) And this tropical island, with its gracious people, was a key to that victory.

So when the Asean (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) decided that it could not hold its summit in Myanmar (formerly known as Burma) in December because of its abysmal human rights record, it turned to the Philippines, whose rights record is not exactly sterling either, though not as bad as banana republics go.

This was, for the motherland, not only a singular honor but an unexpected opportunity to make the country’s presence felt positively in the global community. It would be a lark, too, since Manila is a convention-friendly city. It has the Philippine International Convention Center, a world-class facility built during the martial law regime of Ferdinand Marcos and a clutch of five-star accommodations to house the visiting heads of 10 states and their entourage.

However, President Arroyo chose Cebu instead. Maybe she was returning the favor. If it were, it was still the right thing to do.

Problem is Cebu, despite its reputation as a tourist eden, does not have enough facilities or sufficient infrastructure to handle a gathering of such magnitude. I have been trying to point out to Cebu’s leaders that the Mactan International Airport would not be able to handle the kind of travel traffic Singapore or Hong Kong, both as small as Cebu, has.

Indeed countries are notified of such hosting responsibilities years in advance so they would have adequate time to prepare an extravaganza.

Cebu, however, was only given months. They were told only last April.

This is why, when I arrived here late last week, there was such a fuss over whether the Cebu International Convention Center, would be finished in time.

Thanks to a senior government official who couldn’t keep his trap shut, the media were in a bit of a dither that the convention would have to be held at the Shangrila Mactan Resort Hotel. I’m sure the visiting dignitaries would have no problem mulling over the region’s problems in such luxuriant facilities.

But it’s not true, say the folks here who know, among them Sharon Samarista, the Shang’s director for communications. Yes, she said, the Shang is setting up a permanent huge tent to hold some of the major events, and that it would house most of the heads of state.

But no, she continued, the major events would still be held at the CICC, which she assured would be finished in time. The provincial government has allotted more than half a billion pesos (a bit over 10 million US dollars) for its construction, with more to be disbursed as needed, I’ve been told.

True, says, Marissa Fernan, daughter of the late revered Chief Justice Marcelo Fernan. The CICC will be finished in time. The low-profile, ultra-active Marissa is the de facto head of the kitchen cabinet of Cebu Gov. Gwen Garcia, a fellow Theresian. She is also one of the most trusted executives of the taipan Henry Sy, patriarch of the SM retail megachain. In other words, you can take her word to the bank.

Over fusion cuisine at currently the island’s coolest restaurant, the recently opened Abaca (which incidentally is owned by an American chef with a Thai wife), Marissa said that Cebu’s leaders have set aside not only their political differences but also personal pride to make the summit a success.

For one, Philip Rodriguez, the island’s top couturier, has not made a fuss over Malacañang’s choice to have the collection of Pitoy Moreno, the dean of the Philippine’s fashion designers, take center stage during the cultural presentations. Instead Philip has contented himself in a low-profile role of, among others, designing the “uniforms” of the Shang’s executives.

We saw Teresing Mendezona emerging from a meeting, saying she had corralled her high-society amigas to take care of the food and the flowers.

Already, in preparation of the summit, the road between the Shang and the Abaca restaurant is already a river of white light with tiny bulbs dripping from trees. It is a private effort of residents and the businesses in that area. Other communities have taken note and Marissa says that soon, the boulevards to be used by the visiting dignitaries will have such a festive lighting as well.

Again Cebu, perhaps without meaning to, has again upheld itself as a paragon of good governance for the entire country.

For Ms. Arroyo, it affords another chance for her to refurbish her image. We hope she does not blow it again.

Actually, the reason why it's facing the mountains is because of the road itself.

Hehehe.

The back portion of this building is another private property. It would have been better if it was positioned the other way around, with the road at the back of the building so that the building would now be facing the harbor.

Maybe the owner of this building is anticipating for "another" high rise to be built at the back of it thus the very "flat-looking" back portion.

I call this building, Cebu's own version of NY's Flatiron.. The space is really soooooo small, thus the building looks very slim (like a needle perhaps!) if viewed at the sides..

Philippines hopes to attract 36,000 Indian tourists in 2007

...Towards this end, the Philippines, a cluster of 7,106 islands at last count, is initially positioning three cities - capital Manila, as also Cebu and Davao - for the Indian market.

Speaking about connectivity, he said Singapore Airlines currently offered three flights a day from India to Manila via its home and one each to Cebu and Davao, the flying time from here being roughly six hours. The Philippines Department of Tourism was also engaged in talks with Malaysian Airlines and Cathay Pacific Airways to put together packages aimed at bringing more Indian groups to the country....

Add to that, it'll be risking the shipping routes in and out of Cebu's busy harbour. A tunnel is much feasible than a bridge from Cordova or any point in Mactan to Cebu City, but hopefully we will have a budget for that sometime soon.

Here's a cheaper proposal instead of building a very long and expensive bridge from Mactan to mainland Cebu.

The area enclosed in yellow is actually very, very shallow and is not passable to ships (If I'm not mistaken!).
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b396/arnoldsa/cebu_aerial01.jpg

Therefore, here's how the plan should go.

A highway, just like the United Nations Avenue in Mandaue City, should be built. This should go all the way to Kawit Island. The actual bridge itself will be from Kawit Island all the way to the SRP.. The approach of the bridge at the SRP side shall run parallel to the existing causeway until it descends and merges with the South Coastal Highway.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b396/arnoldsa/cebu_aerial02.jpg

.... Or instead of a bridge, a ferry could also be established that would bring the people to Kawit Island. From Kawit Island, they can then take the highway to Mactan.

^^ More or less like a Causeway, is that what you're proposing Bai Arnold? It looks feasible since the southern quadrant of Mactan is not passable to ships.

But if a bridge is to be constructed in the southern sector of the channel, it must accommodate all sizes of ships. Mactan Channel in the north is not passable for SuperFerry and Sulpicio's Princess Cruises right? Therefore, a tall brdige would have to be constructed.

If they will be able to relocate the port -- both the international and domestic -- in Tayud, Liloan or in Cordova, there would surely be no problem with regards to the vertical clearance of the bridge. :okay:

The Italian Government has already approved a grant to develop the waterfalls somewhere in Mt. Manunggal (?) :dunno: (Is there a falls in Mt. Manunggal? Hehe)

Part of this would include the development of the waterfalls itself as a resort and the construction of a cable car from Taptap to Mt. Manunggal.

Councilor Gabby Leyson has already donated (or will still donate?) part of his property in Taptap where the Cable Car would begin.

Mayor Osmeña said that the development of the Waterfalls would surely be a hit considering that it's far more accessible compared with Kawasan Falls which is located a hundred kilometers down south.

City Council approves construction of signage

The Freeman 11/23/2006

The City Council yesterday approved a budget of at least P8.274 million for the construction of the "Welcome Hill" signage at the Cebu South Road Properties.

This after the Bids and Awards Committee of the city government awarded the signage's construction to the lowest bidder, the Ana Construction.

Under the terms and conditions, the contractor will also provide facilities inside the SRP for disabled persons such as ramps.

Mayor Tomas Osmeña earlier said the 296-hectare SRP would have recreational parks and retirement villages.

But the city government, however, has yet to close a deal with those interested in putting up retirement facilities at the SRP. - Garry B. Lao

Cebu City to spend P8.2M for SRP signs

CEBU City Hall will spend P8.2 million to build a concrete welcome sign at the South Road Properties (SRP) that will look “a bit like the 45-foot-tall Hollywood sign.”

The SRP signage, made of tons of concrete and stainless steel, will be installed on top of a concrete substructure that will be buried on a manmade miniature hill.

The hill is part of the infrastructure horizontal development that the City Government contracted with TOA Construction in its P450-million undertaking in 2002.

This time, the City Government will let another construction firm develop and landscape the miniature hill.

The P8.2 million contract of the project, however, did not stipulate how much each welcome letters will cost.

City Administrator Francisco Fernandez, in an interview, said it will look like the sign that promoted Hollywood in 1923.

The City Council yesterday approved without discussion a resolution authorizing Mayor Tomas Osmeña to enter into a contract with Ana Construction represented by its manager Edgardo Maningo for the project.

The approval was based on the bids and awards committee’s resolution recommending that the contract be awarded to the contractor with the lowest calculated and responsive bid last Nov. 8.

“It’s going to look like the one in Hollywood. When you enter the South Coastal Road you will see the sign welcoming you to the SRP. Basta the impact is like that of Hollywood,” Fernandez told Sun.Star Cebu.

He said part of Ana Construction’s obligation will be to build a retaining concrete wall on top of the hill where a restobar may be put up. (GAC)

I think the presence of the Casino Filipino was a factor. Aside from that, the ASEAN Summit is also a big time event which needs a truly international convention center compared with the ATF.

Anyway, I can still remember during the construction of the Cebu City Waterfront Hotel for the 1998 Asean Tourism Forum (ATF), the then DOT Secretary threatened to move the ATF to Manila if the hotel would not be completed in time.

She was hoping to "house" all the delegates in just a single hotel thus she wanted it to be finished the soonest possible.

I was still highschool then, around 2nd year. Construction of it was so thrilling, it's really just the same with the CICC today. I can even remember some news articles and opinion columns discussing about whether it would be finished or not.

I think, the hotel itself was actually not 100% percent completed when the ATF came (some of the rooms were not yet finished although the convention center and the function rooms were really completed including the exteriors, the main lobby, the restaurants, the landscaping, etc.).

I was so excited then everytime our family would go to Waterfront every after mass (just to hear violin and piano at the lobby). It was like going to a mall. The hotel itself really looks like a mall inside, hehe. There were also so many people. I think Waterfront enjoyed a landmark status similar to Ayala and SM when it was completed.
