Nat'l, local dailies to provide free copies during ASEAN Summit

Cebu City (24 November) -- National and local dailies have agreed to provide complimentary copies of their newspapers to be made available at the International Media Center (IMC) during the Asean Summit based inside the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC) in Mandaue City.

Over 2,000 foreign and local journalists are expected to cover the summit which officially starts on December 6 with a series of ministerial and senior officials' meetings before concluding to the Leaders' Meetings on December 11-13.

Journalist not part of the media pool for selected coverage of events will remain at the IMC where they can read the various papers on display.

In a recent meeting with the circulation managers and delivery-in-charge of some national and local newspapers, they have agreed to the request made by the Philippine Information Agency (PIA-7) to provide complimentary copies from December 4 when the IMC officially operates until December 15.

The following dailies that will provide free copies every day during the summit period are Cebu Daily News and The Freeman with 100 copies each and Sun Star Daily committing 400 copies. The national dailies that gave their commitment are Philippine Daily Inquirer and Philippines Star with 100 copies each and Manila Bulletin with 300 to 500 copies while the Manila Shimbun promised to provide 30 to 50 copies during the summit duration.

The National Organizing Committee - Media and Communications Secretariat (NOC-MCS) to the 12th Asean Summit wants major local and national dailies to be available at the IMC where international and Philippine-based journalists can scout the latest news and updates.

Primers on the summit have already been distributed to the media while the NOC-MCS is requesting the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkasters sa Pilipinas (KBP) - Cebu Chapter for their members to air the Asean jingle as the summit date draws near.

The PIA-7 in partnership with the Police Regional Office (PRO-7) conducted two consultative meetings with the circulation managers and delivery-in-charge of local and national dailies as well as the dealers for a smooth flow of their delivery services. Newspaper delivery particularly to major hotels where the Heads of States are billeted will be greatly affected when road security measures will be strictly enforced including road closures from Dec. 11-13.

PRO-7 deputy director for operations Col. Lani-o Nerez required the media establishments and the newspaper and magazine dealers to submit forms detailing the name of their delivery driver, type of vehicle and plate number as well as regular routes before they can be issued vehicle passes.

The police, being the lead agency on security, also presented the road rerouting plan of public utility vehicles and the identified ceremonial routes where road security measures are rigidly implemented and showed where alternatives routes can be taken by private vehicles. (PIA-Cebu/FCR) [top]

Local investors eye Tuburan for vacation facility venture

A group of Cebuanos led by architect Tessie Javier is going to invest on the first Vacation Home facility at the northern part of Cebu in the municipality of Tuburan.

The 2.5 hectares Apalan Beach Villas located in barangay Apalan in Tuburan will have condo hotels, and 50-unit Mediterranean -Filipino designed villas.

In an interview with Javier she said that the group is now on the planning stage to start up its construction works next year.

"We will be able to start the project next year," Javier said in an interview.

The group already got financial support from a bank to start the project, however, Javier declined to divulge the exact amount of the vacation home facility, that may also become the hub of a foreign retirees seeking to settle in the tropical environments like the Philippines.

Javier said the facility will provide a wider choice of vacation home facilities in Cebu province.

The upcoming project, according to Javier will not limit its marketing target to the foreign retirees or balikbayans, but also local residents who may want to have vacation houses, away from the city.

Tuburan is a third class municipality in the province of Cebu with over 50 thousand residents.

Cebu is eyed as the best site for foreign retirees, however the non-availability of facilities such as retirement village and along the beach vacation homes is still a problem.

Last year, a Cebuana businesswoman spent over US$1 million as initial investment of the 1.5 hectare retirement village called A.C. Enclave Resort Homes, in Tabogon town, also located in northern Cebu.

Developed by A.C. Signature Developments Inc., this first "retirement village" facility in Cebu is now aggressively marketing the property to the foreign nationals, or the Filipino-American who want to retire in the Philippines.

"Cebu is an ideal place for retirement. I was prompted to develop this kind of project because a lot of our friends abroad are complaining and demanding for a facility that offers an integrated infrastructure and amenities inside the village," said Annie Chen, president of A.C. Signature Developments Inc. in an interview.

The 1.5 hectare seaside retirement village offers 15 bungalow type house and lot package, with complete amenities such as wellness center, commercial complex or mall, restaurant, among others

as @arnold suggested, a third bridge to mactan ought to have a 'pit-stop' at nearby shell island...

basing on this suggestion, i used google earth to make a rough (and unprofessional) estimate of the length of the would-be bridge...

from the area near the entrance of the subway to shell island, that would be around 500+meters, and from shell island to cordova, that would roughly be 3 kilometres...a very awesome feat for cebu, considering that the span of the channel at the area of the 2 bridges is just around a half a kilometre, and even san juanico is just around 2 kilometres long...

furthermore, a bridge to connect tayud and mandaue would be around as long as one of the mactan-mandaue bridges. a bridge connecting mactan and olango would reach more than 4 kilometres, not to mention the special considerations to be made regarding the resorts on mactan and olango's protected area status, which could make the bridge much longer. but this just pales in comparison to the whooping 15+ kilometre distance to bohol...doing simple math, if a car traverses the bridge at an average speed of 60kmph, that would make the travel to bohol as short as 15 minutes...the cebu-negros link would be a much feasible plan, since it would require only about a 7+kilometre bridge...

btw, the distance spanned by the tokyo bay bridge is just a little more than 11 kilometres long(actual bridge is 14+Km)...so the cebu-bohol bridge would definitely be a challenge to build, but when completed, would put the philippines in the world map...

^^ Bohol Governor Aumentado said that after Olango island only a causeway bridge similar to SRP is needed because of the shallow waters between Olango and the small islands to Bohol.

PRESIDENTS of two national groups organizing international events are calling on Cebuanos to look beyond the Asean summit when thinking of the CICC, which they said is “even better than those in European cities.”

Jose Yulo Jr., president of the Philippine Exhibits and Themeparks Corp., said the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC) is a “positive jewel” for Cebu, and that because of it “many good things are expected to happen.”

“Even in the event that it couldn’t be finished for the Asean, it doesn’t matter. Around the world, most important cities have this and so Cebu has joined the world. You have entered the modern world and this will benefit you and your children,” said Yulo, former president of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry and former president of the Philippine Stock Exchange.

Yulo had a tour at the CICC yesterday with Marisa Nallana, president of the Philippine Association of Convention/Exhibition Organization and Suppliers (Paceos).

Nallana, for her part, also said their members are already asking if they could book events at the CICC, an infrastructure project that she said they proposed for the government to build 10 years ago yet.

“Key cities in the US and Europe have an exhibit and convention center. Companies from Germany, Taiwan and China wanted to have exhibits here but there’s no place. Ten years ago we proposed this to the Department of Tourism, but this was not a priority. We were having a difficult time organizing big events here because of the lack of venue,” said Nallana.

For Yulo, the issue is not whether the CICC could be finished in time for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) summit. He expects several events coming up for the CICC, exhibits that he projects would bring a “higher level” of education, generate transport business and the construction of other businesses in the vicinity.

Amid continuing criticisms about the CICC from some columnists, Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia dared them to ask any experienced triple A contractors if the CICC construction is an ordinary feat.

“We had groundbreaking last April 7 so in less than eight months, we completed a structure with 27,000 square meters of floor area, 3.8 hectares of onsite development and with three million kilograms of structural steel. Ask any experienced contractor just how significant that feat is,” said Garcia.

She expects to be doing more test runs for the air conditioning system and escalators as well as attend to the last finishing touches beyond Nov. 30.

“We seem to have been too focused on dates. There’s so much speculation and debate and fighting over it, overlooking the fact that there now stands at the reclamation area a monument of the Cebuanos’ ability to deliver,” she said.

Euphoria

“All of us must join hands and see to it that amidst all preparations, we don’t lose track of our being warm, hospitable and friendly Cebu because after all is said and done, it is the intangibles that will remain in the memories of the delegates who will come here,” she added.

Ambassador Marciano Paynor said Cebu has risen up to the challenge in spite of the shortcomings and time constraints, and for that, everyone must share the “euphoria” after the summit.

As of yesterday, Alenair Manager Luis Moro III said the air conditioning for the 74-booth media center was already functioning, and they could have that of the plenary room operational tomorrow. They will finish the rest by end of the week.

“There’s nothing to worry about. By Dec. 2 we’re out of here,” said Moro, who hesitated to take over the work of the previous contractor but in the end decided to accept the job “to help Cebu.”

The 74-booth international media center, which is being taken care of by Malacañang and equipped with audio and video facilities, will be fully operational by Dec. 4. Only 10 of the rooms are still open, as the rest have already been booked.

Also, the Provincial Civil Security Unit has also taken over the security at the construction site, although the Presidential Security Group (PSG) still has personnel who are roving the area.

Garcia decided on this after receiving reports that the PSG demands a written order before her men can enter the CICC, a P515-million facility that is being built using Capitol funds. (JPM)

ASEAN Summit delegates won’t get an answer to one question regarding Cebu’s “all-stops-pulled” preparations, which sweep in a mint-new international convention center, P2,500-per-head dinners, and traffic islands bursting with flower pots. And come December 11 to 14, driving with mud on your tires along ceremonial routes could be a no-no.

The question is simple: “Where are your trees?”

ASEAN has some of the world’s greenest cities. Kuala Lumpur planted 110,461 trees in one minute in October 2004, as part of Malaysia’s campaign to become a “Garden Nation.” Singapore’s 2,300 hectares of parks, with the Botanical and Mandai Orchid Gardens, attract 7.5 million visitors yearly.

In contrast, Cebu is the most denuded of our 80 provinces. Forest cover is less than two percent. Forests blanketed half (57 percent) of the country in 1934. But crooks and kaingineros stripped that down to 17 percent today. A main road in Cebu City was once called Mango Avenue. It is now bereft of trees. Aquifers are crumbling. And 15 “hotspots” of illegal logging plague the Buhisan reservoir watershed.

After the guests leave, the real cost of the hurriedly-built international convention center will be clearer. “Kon magdali ka, daghang mausik,” the Visayan proverb says. “Haste makes waste.” Cebuanos will wince at the forthcoming repair bill. Auditors must grapple with officials who used ASEAN as their “Fifth Amendment,” i.e. to dodge questions regarding fund disbursements. And will upgraded infrastructure go to seed after the fiesta?

But critical long-term issues will persist. “Where are your trees?”

Residents virtually trapped during ASEAN

With less than two weeks before the 12th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit, residents in Nivel Hills and neighboring mountain barangays still do not have a clue where to pass on the way to the city once the road along Marco Polo Plaza Hotel in Nivel Hills is closed.

The city government is still looking for alternative routes to Veteran's Drive in Nivel Hills, which leads to some of the city's mountain barangays and the Cebu Transcentral Highway that connects the city to the western towns of the province like Balamban and Asturias.

Veteran's Drive is part of the ceremonial route. But the road where Marco Polo Plaza Hotel is located will be closed during the summit from December 11 to 14 for security reasons. Delegates from Australia will be billeted in the hotel.

Nagiel Bañacia, head of the Cebu City summit committee, said the security task force is considering the “regulated” use of the Veteran's Drive.

This means that movement of vehicles will be “controlled” and will only be allowed after the convoy of delegates billeted at the Marco Polo Plaza Hotel has passed.

He added that only five vehicles may be allowed to use the road at a time, he said.

Arnel Tancinco, executive director of the City Traffic Operations Management (Citom), said other vehicles will have to be rerouted.

With 12 days to go before the opening of the leaders' summit on December 11, Citom has yet to finalize its re-routing plan.

But Tancinco said vehicles from the Transcentral Highway will be diverted to a “dirt road” across the Busay barangay hall, which exits in Beverly Hills Subdivision.

The road also provides access to three areas that can lead to Gorordo Ave. These are Sitio Sudlon in Barangay Lahug, Sanson Road beside a gas station and a community road near a satellite market fronting J.Y. Square.

But Tancinco said he was apprehensive that the two-lane access road from Barangay Busay may not be able to accommodate the heavy volume of vehicles from the mountain barangays.

He said the access road is only six meters wide and a portion needs to be asphalted.

Councilor Augustus Pe Jr. said the city government could not just asphalt the road because a portion of this is privately owned.

To reduce the volume, he said motorists from the western part of Cebu should not be allowed to use the Transcentral Highway in going to Cebu City. Instead, they should use the Manipis and Naga Uling Road in the south.

Group eyes completion of Banilad project in ?08

A consortium, composed mainly of international companies, is investing more than a billion pesos in Cebu for a development project that it describes to be the ?first of its kind in the country.?

Ciudad ? a joint venture development of the Cebu Provincial Government and Fifth Avenue Property Development Corp. (Fifth Avenue) that blends culture, entertainment, retail, dining and architecture ? will rise along Banilad Road, Cebu City. (Please see related story on A10.)

Fifth Avenue is composed of foreign companies WLG Singapore, a leisure company; IPay Limited Hong Kong, a financing company; China Team, a construction company; and the Dino family of Cebu.

Lawyer Jose Allado Jr., consortium spokesman, said the estimated cost of the development is around P1.2 billion. This excludes the cost of the construction of a business class hotel inside the 2.8-hectare development.

He said in an interview after the project?s ground-breaking yesterday that Ciudad is an entirely new concept, which has not been introduced in the country.

?We want to develop a destination, where people can visit Cebu in one day. It will have restaurants, coffee shops, retail stores, a museum and many leisurely spots that depict the Cebuano culture,? Allado said.

Jose Danilo Silvestre, principal architect of DA Silvestre Associates, said Fifth Avenue aims to complete the project in December next year. Construction will start in January.

Turnover

?We want to turn over to the retail tenants their space by August so that they can do the necessary additions and preparations for the opening in December (next year),? he said.

DA Silvestre takes care of the architecture details of the Ciudad.

Silvestre said the mercadillo, where retail establishments selling the best Cebu products will be found, have a space for 60 tenants. To date, the company has more than 1,000 applicants for the space.

Allado also said Fifth Avenue is inviting investors to bid for the construction and management of the business hotel. At present, there are four bidders ? three foreign companies and a local firm.

He said the consortium envisions the hotel to be four or five stories high and will have 300 rooms.

?This (hotel) would take (us) longer but we hope to have it standing by 2008,? Allado said.

He revealed that the consortium initially wanted to invest in an autoshop at the north reclamation area in Cebu City. But failure in the negotiations over a parcel of the reclaimed Cebu City property led them to the Province-owned lot where the Cebu International School used to be.

Allado said Ciudad is a build-transfer-operate project.

Its contract with the Provincial Government allows Fifth Avenue to lease the property for 25 years with an option to renew for another 25 years.

The Province will also have a share in the con-sortium?s revenues from the development?s operations. (JBN)

A 34-room boutique hotel recently opened at the prime business site in Cebu, near the Cebu Business Park, which will provide a wide choice of accommodation facilities in the metropolis.

Operated by the Franco family, the owner of Philippine School of Culinary Arts, the Regal Business Park Hotel at Archbishop Reyes Avenue fronting Ayala Center Cebu, will be the first "legitimate" boutique hotel in Cebu.

A boutique hotel is a small property, typically offering an enhanced, personalized level of service and marketed to the affluent boutique operation.

This kind of accommodation is more common in Europe, and Cebu has started to embrace this kind of service, amid the shortage of accommodation facilities and growing number of business and leisure visitors.

The Franco family leased the six-story property formerly City Park Inn, in a 20-year contract. The hotel's renovation started late last year, now the hotel is ready for occupancy.

Food and beverage (F&B) manager John Franco said the hotel will highlight is food and beverage niche, being the family's forte.

Regal Business Park will also open its fine dining restaurant soon that will offer international food preparation, with a touch of Filipino flavor.

This is the first time that the Franco family ventured into hotel business, John Franco said managing a hotel may not be difficult for the family as they have been into the similar industry (culinary) for a long time.

At present, the refurbishing and renovation of some rooms are still ongoing. However, the hotel is already open for bookings.

Regal Business Park Hotel joins the Cebu accommodation industry, but with emphasis as a "boutique" hotel which is geared towards a more personalized service.

Tourism prime mover Sammy Lim earlier said that with Cebu's potential as the tourism center in the Philippines, it should also provide accommodation alternative from five-star to pension house, or bed and breakfast type of room service.

Cebu only has an accommodation capacity of over 6,000 hotel room accommodation, majority of which offer high standard and more expensive rates, from business hotel accommodation type, other lower alternative are pension type accommodation.

Lim said Cebu needs boutique hotel accommodations to help fill up the room shortage problems, and give visitors a wide choice of accommodation offerings.

I think there's a typo or a misquotation on the part of the reporter.. One can't fit 300 rooms in a 4-5 storey building unless if it's going to be a very long building horizontally. If they're going to build such, they would consume the space of the property thus disabling them from building a "mall."

Ummmm. The lot area is only 2.8 hectares.. If they're going to build a 4-5 storey hotel with 300 rooms, that would be 75 rooms per floor (from 2nd to 5th since the 1st floor would be a lobby). That would really be a "long" building horizontally and they would no longer be able to build their mall, museum, and the so-called "old Cebu" which I guess would be outdoor..

Hehehehe... There's a typo lagi!

Capitol expecting P2B income from Ciudad project in Banilad

A project that will mean at least P2 billion in additional assets to the Cebu Provincial Capitol was officially unveiled yesterday.

Governor Gwen Garcia and officials of Fifth Avenue Property Ventures held the groundbreaking of “Ciudad”, a mix-use development project in barangay Banilad, Cebu City.

Michael Dino, executive vice president of Fifth Avenue, said the project “will further reinforce the truth that Cebu is the center of Philippine tourism.”

Ciudad is a multi-functional facility, which will have a mall, a hotel, restaurants, an entertainment center and stalls that will sell Cebu’s products.

It will also depict the old Cebu through its architecture.

The bricks used in the olden times will be used for the roofing of the buildings within the complex, which will stand on a 2.7 hectare Province-owned lot in Banilad.

The oldest street in the Philippines, Colon Street, will also be incorporated in the design of the project.

Its developer has set the completion of the project by December 2007 in time for the Advertising Congress, which will again be held in Cebu.

The hotel, however, will not be completed by that time, they said.

Under the contract with Capitol, Fifth Avenue will invest at least P2 billion for the project and after its completion, it will turn over the buildings, including the hotel, to the Province.

The developer will operate the facilities for 25 years, but it will be paying Capitol for the rest and the latter’s share for the sales.

CONDO DEVELOPER MULLS ANOTHER PROJECT AT CBP
Korean developer Fastem Housing and Development Inc. is planning to construct another condominium while the construction of its maiden development in Cebu is ongoing at the Cebu Business Park.

FHDI president Sun Kyu Baek said the company is now conducting a feasibility study for the construction of a condominium hotel on a 3,000 square meter lot beside the Tower Palace residential condominium at the CBP.

He said in an interview yesterday that FHDI is now talking with the owners of the property to get the lot size they desire for the project.

"We hope to start the construction of the project by the middle of next year," Sun said.

He said the investment of the condominium hotel is estimated to equal the P1.4 billion investment of FHDI on the Tower Palace.

With regard to the Tower Palace, he said the development is now 85 percent near completion on the soil protection, which is essential for the foundation of the 20-storey condominium.

Sun said about 22 percent of the tower's 200 units are sold out. FHDI aims to complete the project by 2008.

The official plane for the prime minister of Japan, one the ASEAN dialogue partners, landed at the Mactan Cebu International Airport to familiarize with its designated route as well as refueling and other necessary operations.

Airport manager Danilo August Francia said the presidential plane 747-400 of Japan's head of state arrived in Mactan airport at around 12:45 p.m. and left approximately two hours later.

Francia said all the security forces and personnel at the airport, including the ground handler, as well as the people from Philippine Airlines, and a representative from the hotel to where Japan's prime minister will be billeted was also there to orient the airplane crew on what to do during their head of state's arrival here for the summit.

Francia said yesterday's dry run has served as a good simulation exercise for the actual arrival of the heads of states and other dignitaries during the summit.

He said that even after the said dry-run experiment, they will still be conducting a series of tests to correct some aspects of their preparations that need improvement.

No, only two towers all in all.. We went to the showroom yesterday with Brodix and there was an ongoing press conference.

The usher told us that the second tower will no longer be for residential condominium and she wasn't sure what it will be although a newspaper article said that it will be a hotel-condominium.

By the way, their units including the Penthouse Suite are sooooo nice. I guess they are far more better than Ultima Residences. It really is so high end compared with most of the condominiums in Cebu which are mostly mid-to-low end.

Each unit is carefully partitioned and you can have it fully-furnished at your choice. The Penthouse Suite on the other hand is simply amazing. It's got two levels with balcony, four bedrooms with walk-in closet, 3 bathrooms, a large kitchen, family & living room. It too is carefully partitioned unlike most condominium units where the kitchen and the rooms are outright visible from the living room. It's just like putting a two-storey mansion at the topmost part of a building.

Maybe this is the reason why they called it "Tower Palace?" Hehehe..

The Cebu City government will start earning from the reclaimed South Road Properties (SRP) next year as some investors are expected to start constructing their facilities, according to Cebu Investment Promotion Center Joel Mari Yu.

"I would like to believe that in the first half of next year, we will see actual structures coming up," Yu said.

He said negotiations with some investors were in the final stages.

University of Cebu president Augusto Go planned to build a high-end trade high school on a 2-hectare lot across the school's campus, Yu said.

The city government and God had been talking for the leas of the area with an option to purchase, he added.

Another investor, Bigfoot wants to start constructing sound stages and a marina commercial complex. The 15 hectares for the project and another 2-hectares for the marina-commercial complex.

Yu said Bigfoot planned to purchase outright the two hectares and lease, with an option to buy, the 15 hectares.

Bigfoot also plans to build a 15-story condominium also on the two-hectare area, he said.

"The sound stage project is also their (Bigfoot's) immediate priority. They want to build four sound stages as fast as possible," Yu said.

The city government also plans to go into joint venture projects with two major real estate developers - Filinvest Land Inc. and Sta. Lucia Realty and Development Inc.

The city goverment and the Filinvest had been finalizing legal documents for a restaurant commercial complex that would be built in the vicinity of the Kawit area.

"We are also negotiating terms with Sta. Lucia. They asked for 70 hectares but we cut in half. We allow them to proceed with about 30 or 35 hectares," Yu said.

Sta. Lucia proposed a scheme of sharing with Cebu City, he added.

The city was also finalizing an agreement with the Cardiovascular Hospitals of America, which wanted to set up a medical facility at the SRP, he said.

There were pending negotiations for 12 hectares with Taiwanese businessman Paul Yu, who was awaiting the completion of the access road, Yu said. There were also three investors ready to come in upon the completion of the road, said Yu.

He said the bulk of the city's earnings from the SRP would come from its share of the utility sales, such as power and water.

"Land leases would account for not more than 35 percent (of the SRP revenues). More than 50 percent of the revenue will come from our shares of power sales and the balance from our share of the water sales and other utility sales," Yu said.

They're actually renovating it completely. It's just that it doesn't have a roof that is why it looks like a shell. It's restoration came out in the newspapers months ago.

Some of it are useful and in fact overdue na (like road and drainage repairs, relocation of squatters, improved lighting, etc.) but others like this one are just, well, plain cosmetic. imho

Yeah maybe they are just repainting it for the Asean Summit but the thing is, after the summit, it will really be fully rehabilitated. Nothing bad with it as long as they really do something about it after the summit.

Anyway, restoration of this building has long been planned already. I know because I've been following updates not just of it but also of the nearby buildings that are part of the Waterfront development program (this building is right in front of the seaside park near the causeway going to the SRP). :)

In fact, in my first Cebu Heritage Walk thread which I created in October last year, I already mentioned about the plan to rehabilitate it so that it would complement with the seaside park being developed at the waterfront.

It's restoration started months ago when the building was cleared inside and out by workers. A photo was published at the front page of a local newspaper. Months later, the Cebu City Fire Department together with the Cultural and Historical Affairs Committee (CHAC) cleaned it's exteriors using high pressure water. If i'm not mistaken, another photo of it was again published but no longer in the front page.

Aside from this building, the Cebu City Museum, the City Hall and its Plaza are also currently being renovated. Funds are limited -- just one at a time, we still belong to a poor country we call the Philippines. Hehe. If the city government would make a full blast simultaneous rehabilitations of these old buildings, Communist Fronts would again rally on the streets.


Some of it are useful and in fact overdue na (like road and drainage repairs, relocation of squatters, improved lighting, etc.) but others like this one are just, well, plain cosmetic. imho

Most of the major roads (which are national) including some of the infrastructures that come with it are actually the responsibility of the National Government through the DPWH.

Rehabilitation is really long overdue. They should have even done it years ago. Well, maybe they were busy with other things/projects. :okay:

Holes like this one along the center islands of Osmena Blvd from the Capitol to Fuente Osmena are now being readied for the installation of the 'space ship" light fixtures. The 22 existing lamp posts will be totally replaced with 12 posts (2 bulbs each post).

Some of the banner images are not downloading but of the ones I am able to
see I am a bit biased on this one since the CICC is more prominent than Shang and the stylish fonts in the middle blend well with the architecture, logo and flags. Great job, Pirena and the rest of the gang who created their equally attractive banners!:cheers1:

borat is no longer shown in major cinemas here based on today's movie guide of sunstar. it's no longer shown in ayala maybe because of the reason pointed out by arnold and i think it was not really shown in SM because of its MTRCB rating... you know naman SM, wholesome 'kono' ang image sa ilang cinemas :lol:

@mark, i've seen several of those bus-types parked in front of that hotel/condo along Mabolo.... i saw them when i passed that area from the airport to ayala the other day

Those buses bai are designed to carry a lot of baggages underneath the raised floor. With a lot of visitors coming almost at same time, shuttles and taxis won't be enough to handle the volume, this buses will take care of that problem.

The Borat movie received a lot of law suits from citizens here in the US asking a share of the monies it made. Most of the citizens were not informed that they were goona be a part of that movie. Some of the citizens complained that some of them were even made to look like fools not knowing they were going to be shown in the movie worldwide. The court must have ordered a stop on the viewing of the movie.

This is recently used in coal mining by Australians, they are usually in the shape of a cone or funnel it recently replaced the old way of thickening coal tailings.

Googled: "Novel thickening technologies, such as deep bed or paste thickening (Deep ConeTM, Supaflo? and AKASET) and rake-less thickeners (Ultrasep, E-CatTM and others) are used in other industries and have good potential to replace conventional thickeners, if paste and/or high thickener underflow concentration is required. Rake-less thickeners have specific internals to improve floc formation, dilution and clarification. Deep bed or paste thickening is basically thickening with a high sediment bed to provide solids pressure for further compression and consolidation. Thus, improved control and higher rake torque are common in thickeners used for paste thickening. The height of deep bed thickeners is also extended to enable the required bed height. However, paste pumping requires significantly higher power and costs. Deep Cone technology will be tested on pilot scale in the US in 2005 for coal tailings. Ultrasep technology is used in Australia in other industries already."

My vote goes to this banner. It somehow shows the better angle of the CICC
and also gives equal importance to both summit venues. To the foreign guests who had not yet seen either, the banner portrays two simply magnificent edifices under the cebuano sun... something to look forward to.

I hope that it would not remain a plan for a long time. I already heard of it some years ago during the first term of Mayor Osmena. There was even some talk of building something like the fishermen's wharf in SF. What happened to it? At any rate, the fishermen's wharf is not really that extraordinary. I think Cebu can do better.

Larsian moves to a new home

Larsian, the long smoky strip of barbecue stands across Fuente Osme?a that is a local favorite among budget-smart Cebuanos, is changing address today.

It will have new stalls, water supply, a security guard, a comfort room, cleaner surroundings and no risk of being evicted by City Hall.

Most vendors agreed to transfer a few meters away from the nameless alley they occupied near Don Gil Garcia Street to an empty lot owned by the Cebu provincial government.

?So I urge the public to patronize the new Larsian,? said Capitol consultant Pablo John Garcia. ?Why change the name when there is already name recognition??

The new 1,900-square-meter location beside the parking lot of the Chong Hua Hospital may not have the same view of the rotunda at night, but Garcia said the transfer was the province?s ?win-win? solution to the city?s problem with nuisance structures. A City Hall demolition crew has been removing illegal eateries and stalls along nearby B. Rodriguez St. this month.

At least 46 new stalls were built for the vendors by Coca Cola with the agreement that Coke would be the exclusive supplier of non-alcoholic drinks there.

The province will earn from stall rentals at P150 a day per stall.

?Vendors will have a clean, safe and attractive place to sell their stuff and this will take care of the big headache of the city because they (vendors) are practically occupying the street and the sidewalk,? said Garcia.

Provincial Treasurer Roy Salubre, who heads the province's economic enterprise committee, said it wasn?t difficult to persuade the 29 vendors to move when he said the alternative was the risk of eviction by the city government at any hour. This was a better option, he said,?kay sa gub-on sila sa city unsang orasa?.

The 17 other available stalls were offered to different Cebu towns to showcase their own delicacies.

Garcia said that unlike the old Larsian, the new area will have a guard, a comfort room and a maintenance crew.

?Karon mo increase ang ilang market because people who would not go to Larsian for hygiene reasons would now consider going there because each of the stalls will have its own water and electric connection. On top of this, the vendors now have security,? he said.

The name Larsian belonged to one of the first eateries that opened in the Fuente area during the early 70s. It occupied the largest space and had the most prominent billboard among the rest of the stalls, so the whole block eventually became known as Larsian.

Hehe.. Yeah, if I'm not mistaken this was actually part of the masterplan of the Cebu Heritage Walk project during the time of Mayor Alvin Garcia. I saw its renderings so many times. The project was to be done in phases; in fact, there were already visible signs of its implementation such as the installation of Spanish-type street lamps throughout downtown, the closure of a portion of Magallanes Street and its conversion and integration into a park with the Magellan's Cross, the construction of the Heritage of Cebu Monument by a national artist, among others. When Mayor Tommy Osmena assumed the mayorship, he scrapped the project and as far as I can remember on that news article, he said "it's not my priority..." It should be noted that Tommy and Alvin are political enemies although I'm not sure if the junking of the project had something to do with it.
