What is so funny is that from the moment you enter the center, from the lobby, then to the upper floors, you are always in a camera's focus - not the security cameras, but those media-type videocams. They call it 'profiling' daw.
What's left to be done is the carpeting, wallpaper works on some rooms, the plenary and the exhibition hall, and the water features in the lobby (the lobby will be surrounded by ponds and fountains, which Mr. Guanzon described as a 'floating lobby. Other than those things, the CICC is good to go.

CEBU CITY -- A P1.2-billion Spanish-inspired commercial tourist facility is in the works in Cebu City.
The Cebu provincial government is considering constructing the tourist facility on its 2.8-hectare lot near the posh subdivisions in Cebu City as a revenue-generating venture.
A newly formed consortium will build "Ciudad," a mixed-use development envisioned to provide its visitors a glimpse of the old and modern Cebu.
The project's total cost could range from P800 million to P1.2 billion, excluding the hotel, according to Jose Danilo Silvestre, principal architect of DA Silvestre Associates, the firm that came up with the project's design.
Silvestre said the project would be on a build-transfer-operate scheme. This meant that the consortium will turn over the project to the provincial government, but it will operate Ciudad on behalf of the province.
The provincial government will generate revenues from both the land rental fees and its share from Ciudad's profits.
Under the agreement with the provincial government, the Fifth Avenue Property Development Corp. (FAPDC) will pay rental fee of P35 per square meter starting this December.
When the project starts operation, the province will get a one percent share of Ciudad's gross sales.
Ciudad will feature multi-level interconnected buildings that would house restaurants, a museum, an amusement center and a variety of shops.
The FAPDC envisions Ciudad to become an architectural landmark that would showcase a combination of the old and modern Cebu, FAPDC spokesman Jose Allado Jr. said.
"It will have the finest dining in town and the best of Cebu's arts, culture and history. It will be like Cebu in a day," Allado said.
Since Cebu already has a number of malls, the Cebuano investors wanted to come up with something different. "Ciudad's design would depict the Cebuano heritage," Silvestre said.
Ciudad will comprise of Centro Sinulog, a five-level structure that will house a supermarket, a hardware, and an amusement center, among others; Plaza del Sol and Plaza de la Luna, which will house restaurants; and the Mercadillo, which will have micro retail shops that would carry Cebu-made products and souvenir items.
Aside from providing a venue to the works of Cebu artists, Ciudad will also host outdoor events and concerts at its plazas.
Except for the hotel, Ciudad was projected to be operational by November 2007, in time for the Advertising Congress, Silvestre said.
FAPDC assistant executive vice president Roger T. Gopaoco said the consortium building Ciudad is composed of the Singapore-based WLG Pte Ltd, a gaming company; China Team, a company engaged in construction; Ipay Ltd., which is into financial services; and the Dino family, which owns the Philippine Beijing Corp., importer and assembler of a China-made motorcycle brand.
The construction of Ciudad started with the groundbreaking held Tuesday at the site.
Present during the event were Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia, Mark Chan of IPay, Frederick Tan of WLG and other officials of the consortium.
Aside from Ciudad, the FAPDC is looking for an investor-operator of the project's hotel component.
Allado said they were negotiating with four prospective investors, three foreign and one local. "We want to get the hotel up and running in 2008," he said.

Sinjin P. December 1st, 2006, 04:59 AM Why Cebu journalists rock
Here?s why journalists in Cebu are sometimes way ahead of their counterparts in Manila and other regions in improving their craft and their interaction with their audiences: anybody who has a complaint against journalists or newspapers can file it through a website put up by the Cebu Citizens-Press Council (CCPC) (http://www.cebucitizenspresscouncil.org/).
The website, developed by Sun.Star?s Max Limpag (http://max.limpag.com), also has a list of journalists (http://www.cebucitizenspresscouncil.org/cebu-journalists/) working for each of the member newspapers.
I?m always amazed at the way Cebu journalists are often united in issues such as press freedom, ethics, and accountability. Their Press Freedom Week celebrations are unique in that they don?t only hold parades but also workshops and seminars on press freedom and journalism (of course, there?s always the beer and the partying (http://max.limpag.com/2005/09/25/press-freedom-week-ends-and-i-get-star-struck/)).
Their intensely competitive newspapers (Sun.Star (http://max.limpag.com/), Cebu Daily News (http://globalnation.inq7.net/cebudailynews)and The Freeman) are some of the best in the country. One of the reasons for that, I think, is the fact that Cebu editors ? like Sun.Star?s Pachico Seares, who sort of mentored me after he hired me as the first editor of [url=http://sunstar.com.ph/cagayan/index.html]Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro in 1995 ? do not stop learning and do not hesitate to adapt to new trends and technologies.
Perhaps most important of all, these editors are not full of themselves. Unlike many editors in Manila that I know, Cebu editors are not perched on some kind of journalistic pedestal. Their reporters can still relate to them, even share beer with them. They don?t hesitate to mentor the younger journalists just as they don?t hesitate to discipline them when they breached journalistic ethics.
In many Manila newsrooms, there?s this wall that divides editors and reporters. You rarely feel that in Cebu?s newsrooms.
And now, the even higher and thicker wall that separates the press from the public is being torn down in Cebu by efforts such as the CCPC.
Kudos!

Guys, i think the proposed hotel at the Ciudad mall complex will be a 21 storey structure as earlier stated in the press release. Remember in the report that the developer of the said mall are still looking for a partner to run the hotel. So , thats the reason why there is no rendering yet of the said hotel. Just imagine this, how can a 300 room hotel fit into a 4 to 5 storey building if the space is very limited. As you can see only the mall has the rendering.

Jimbu December 1st, 2006, 05:48 PM Fastem invests on 2nd condotel
By Ehda M. Dagooc
The Freeman 12/02/2006
Korean-led company Fastem Housing and Development (FHD) is set to invest another multi-million condo-hotel facility at the Cebu Business Park (CBP), an expansion of its 200-unit condominium building currently being constructed.
In an interview with FHD president Sun Kyu Baek, he said that the company will spend another P1 billion to build a condo-hotel high rise building in a 1,500 square-meter lot beside the 19-story Tower Place Residential Condominiums which is targeted to be completed by September of 2008.
According to Baek this second project of the company will include a commercial complex component. Construction will kick off next year.
Currently, he said an extensive feasibility study is being done on this second project, and that complete details of the plan will be formulated immediately after the study.
FDH has allocated about P1.4 billion investments for the creation of the Tower Palace Residential Condominium. The company is also expecting to spend similar investment cost on this second project.
FHD started in the Philippines in 1980, and handled various construction projects in numerous cities and sites in Asia.
The Fastem Group of companies include; Fastem Construction, Fastem Wall System, Fastem Trading, and FHD.
Recently, the company officially opened its showroom showcasing the company several condo unit models at their temporary office also located at the CBP.
Baek said because of growing interest for condominium living lifestyle in Cebu, he expects to sell all the 200 units next year, the reason why, the company has planned out another project in 2007.
Cebu, which is an emerging city in the Philippines, with an economic growth that has posted faster than any other regions in the Philippines, offers a good potential for condominium based businesses, both in residential and commercial packages.
Months after the company marketed its condominiums it easy registered a 20 percent sold out of the 200 available units.
ChaCha R. Rama, FHD marketing director said 80 percent of its buyers are foreigners, mostly Europeans, while 10 percent Overseas Foreign Workers (OFWs) and balikbayans, the rest are local investor buyers.

It’s amazing how you interpreted my post. Tell me what made you think I am jealous of Cebu.
What I said was, Cebu, being a world class city and all, deserves to have a better facility, whether that is a convention center or a trade center or an airport.
Don't get me wrong. I share the joy (and pride) with all the Cebuanos all over the world for what Cebu has accomplished so far. I think it is phenomenal that it grew (though at a relatively slower rate when compared to M. Manila's) despite the tight budget the past and present governments have allocated for the city.
I am really a Cebu fan, that despite I am not a Cebuano. I enjoy shopping in Cebu despite the presence of giant malls where I now live. I love the beaches in Mactan despite its proximity to Bohol, Boracay and Palawan. And, I also have relatives now settling in Cebu and doing very well, economically. My brother earned his degree at a prestigious university in Cebu. All these combined, I cannot have a reason to be jealous of a wonderful, world-class city that is Cebu.
But let’s not be hypocrite and kiss asses of government officials that try to buy souls just so they can execute their sleazes.

I think that you're one of the people that cannot be please by CICC. Well, you're just one of the living proof that as the saying goes...
"We cannot please everybody even if the person has a pleasing personality and even if the structure of an edifice has a pleasing view, for everybody has a different discriminating taste in all aspects of life".
I respect and I understand your opinion. It's your right. Just don't be wrong with facts next time because we don't have the right to be wrong about facts, right?
Anyway, I passed by along Jones Avenue this morning at around 5AM. I saw flag poles installed at the center island, and I already have an idea what it is for. I think that you also have an idea what it will look like once the flags of the ASEAN member countries are installed. I hope that those "maniniot" "photographer of SSC Cebu" will be there first to take pictures. You know, we always comes first and we have proven that a lot of times here. Like what I told you guys before during our meet at Starbucks, that Tower Palace will be a twin tower edifice.

I think the only (major) favor that ate glo gave to cebu was choosing the place for the asean summit. After, it is the Cebu LGUs which shoulder most of the expenses (contrary to the perception of Manila media that the national government "poured" funds into cebu). The other "improvements" and public works projects funded by the national government were their obligations anyway and they should have done that with or without the summit or whether gma won in the province overwhelmingly or not. But still Cebu should be thankful for this turn of events. This certainly provides more impetus for the development of the province.

MarkiiBoi December 2nd, 2006, 03:53 AM South Korea has just granted Jeju Island self-autonomy, which means that Jeju is now a self-governing province. The national government can no longer interfere with provincial issues other than those that will involve threat to national security. All their revenues will also go to their own coffers. Their blueprint is called Hongapore (a combination of Hong Kong ang Singapore) and they will try to emulate the economic successes of the two autonomous states.
So i wonder, what if Cebu will also be granted self-autonomy?

Anyhow, I asked Guanzon as to what influenced him in designing the CICC.. Cubism? Minimalist? or International Style? He then said and I quote "Don't pre-occupy yourself with those terms, just call it Guanzon Architecture... every architect must have (or must develop) his own style.." :okay:

4. Cebu deserves more than what has stood on there today. Deserve more? From whom? From the people of the province or from the republic? Bai that's a provincial government project. The word "deserve" doesn't apply here because Cebu did not ask that project from the national government. Cebu capitol financed that project from its own funds. Don't confuse other readers here. GMA did not give a cent for it.

It's very very hard for us, you know that our country are compose of so many poor provinces. That means, a lot of our provinces are IRA dependent. It's only Cebu Province that is 33% IRA dependent being the richest province in the country with 0% debt and billions of growing assets.
If we follow the German model of parliament bicameral federalism which the rich provinces or states shares 15%(i'm not so sure about this figure) of its annual income to the poor provinces or states. I don't know if all the rich provinces or states will agree. Because in Germany, those rich cities are complaining because the poor cities are being dependent on them.
All we can do now is to go PARLIAMENT BICAMERAL and not UNICAMERAL which speaker YODA and his trapo allies are trying and insisting to impose.
PARLIAMENT BICAMERAL are proven in the 8 list of the richest countries in the world and the 10 list of giant economies in the world like FRANCE, JAPAN, SOUTH KOREA, ITALY, UK, GERMANY and other countries in the list except the US.

Here's mine:
1. The official name of the building is Cebu International Convention Center (CICC) and not International Trade Center.
1. The owner of the lot where the (CICC) is built is owned by Mandaue city government, share from the reclaimed land done by FF Cruz.
2. The owner of the building called CICC is the provincial government with approved budget of P515 million broken down as follows: (P250 from Megadome and additionaof P200 million and lastly P65 million).
3. Myanmar had backed out from its turn to host the ASEAN summit and the Philippines accepted it as the next country in the rotation. Cebu can host the summit even without that convention center, but a hotel is a hotel. Whether you like it or not the capitol already decided to build that convention center knowing that Cebu also needs an international convention center. The architect has completed the contract in record time (nobody in Cebu right now is capable of doing what they have done, the architect says).
4. Now, I want yours. Lay them out here and let's compare and scrutinize them one by one, as you said.

if we were given Carte Blanche and the luxury of time.
Bai, your criticism would only have substance if you can offer a better alternative. So, what kind of convention center would you have built in lieu of what we now proudly have? You are given only 7 months to build it and for
only PhP 515 million (equivalent to only a little more than US $10 million).
The province of Cebu and the hardworking people who labored day and night to build that beautiful convention center deserve praise, and not ridicule - regardless of what political affiliation you might have.

She does not have to "butcher" my family for me (and several million others) to "hate" her. But let me clear this up with you that the word, "hate" you used, is I think an overstatement in this dialogue. I don't hate her, let me emphasize that very clearly. I just don't like her (more so her husband), including some of her appointed cabinet members, and her governance, as a whole. So, the operative word here is dislike, not hate. Though sometimes they're interchangeable, there's still a thin and distinct line that separate between the two. Don't you agree?
really, i dont find anything wrong with the way she's doing things for cebu, after all she's only returning a favor...
Returning a favor? So, had she reaped so many votes in Iloilo, the impetuous decision to build a relatively unremarkable convention center that's supposed to be of international scale, and the hosting of the ASEAN Forum would have been held in Iloilo and not in Cebu? Wow, if that's really her reason for relocating the ASEAN Forum to Cebu, then what a fair president do we have now! haha!
But seriously, should a public official have to return a favor??? Really, please answer this, because I though that you run for public office because you want to offer yourself to the people without any cost and condition. A president has to be FAIR at all times thus should not have to be pressured by "utang na luob".
Cebu is just a perfect venue for the Forum, in my personal opinion, regardless of the reason, utang-na-luob or not. In fact, I even think it should hold more convention of international scale in the future. Let this be the start to an international Cebu, not a mere event for our grand children to just imagine it happend in the old time.
so let this be a lesson to all other places in the philippines, during elections, dun kayo pumanig sa mas nakakalamang na candidate, so that you'll enjoy reaping the fruit of your votes later on...
Have you given a deeper thought on the macro effects of what you said? Well, I hope you were not serious when you said that line though.
oh yeah, i appreciate your being a cebu fan, welcome to the club!
Thank you.
Now, let me tell you why I like Cebu.
Cebu is a wonderful City – that is a fact. Despite the relatively lesser attention and interest the past and present government has shown it, it has persistently thrived on its own way (and will continue to do so) no matter who will govern this country. Cebu has played a great inspiration to a lot of local government officials all over the country. It has shown time and again that it can stand and thrive on its own no matter what, whoever is on the seat. Of course, its success would not have been made possible without the solid and loyal Cebuanos themselves. So, thank yourself too for playing a part of your city's success. In short, it is the Cebuanos themselves (and that may include you) who made Cebu what it is now – a clear big success -- not Gloria, not Erap, not Marcos. All of them are pro-Manila even if the majority of the people in Manila despise them.
And, btw, my family was rooting for Mr. PROMDI, Lito Osmena when he ran for the top seat 2-3 elections ago. Sadly, he did not make it due to lack of campaign TIME (maybe dirty politics thrashed his character and noble intentions too, which was really unfair to him, we thought). And until now, we still wonder what would have happened to us and to our country as a whole had a guy like him, a master public official with proven tract record, a promdi, a Cebuano, but with a clear and firm disposition to decentralize the government and whose top priority includes to modernize the countryside among others… won the top seat. Things would have been different now. Maybe QUITE different from what is now.

BAKEKANG December 2nd, 2006, 02:16 PM wow bakekang, so u think the CICC is ugly? I have traveled to many major cities around the world and I’m convinced that Cebu has absolutely a good match against those in other countries. And for all it’s worth, Cebu is livelier than most major cities in Europe, maybe except a capital city like London, Paris, Madrid, Rome, Berlin and Frankfort.
But before I say something about the international convention center, please be reminded that we are talking about a structure which is intended as a venue for INTERNATIONAL activity(ies). Thus, I would, of course, rate it and rub it against those international convention centers in other countries. Otherwise, if we contend to a localized level, then let’s stop discussing its design. Because in local scale, I think it is just fine for its use, but certainly not astonishing.
For its function which is to hold a forum of international scale, YES, I think it should have given ample time to have it constructed so it won’t come out so-so, something that’s analogous to a giant warehouse (sorry for the frank words). The half-circle steel used to accent the giant “warehouse” only looks like a ribbon, a poor attempt to break it from being close to a mediocre edifice.
You know what, about 2 years ago, news were already circulating here in Manila that a world-class international convention center will soon rise in Cebu. People here, mostly the promdis, were thrilled. The design shown in the presscon was a stunning spinning disc, pretty much like what you relayed. We thought, wow, this is world class structure which we can rival those in Hong Kong, Sydney or Shanghai. And a world-class city like Cebu deserves to have one like it. Then things have stopped. Budget was not released…until…NOW. And the result – nothing spectacular than a giant warehouse!
Now, I know those PEOPLE who are involved in the construction are inspiring. For what were given at them: limited time and tight budget, they were able to comply (almost now) their contractual obligation (duties). But then again, they are not my issue, but those people who trimmed-down the budget and released it only when the forum is fast approaching. What a child!
BAKEKANG December 2nd, 2006, 02:26 PM though we appreciate your thoughts, this is not the appropriate thread to exchange views regarding politics or the last presidential election. or perhaps we could tone down our political side comments a lil bit so we won't go overboard.
I am aware about that but some people here made me explain how I derived my dislike for the measly budgeted INTERNATIONAL convention center. I think they deserved to know why I said such.

Exactly what my point is. If the budget was not cut and was released earlier, Cebu would have a real convention center of international caliber. As what it is now, its’ not so convincing that the structure is of international level. The good thing is... your local government officials are efficient (and persistent) that they're successfully able to utilize the workers and have consumed all the pressures that came along with the limited time and budget. Plus, of course, hat’s off to the local citizens who continuously believe that they can host an international gathering.

Anyhow, I asked Guanzon as to what influenced him in designing the CICC.. Cubism? Minimalist? or International Style? He then said and I quote "Don't pre-occupy yourself with those terms, just call it Guanzon Architecture... every architect must have (or must develop) his own style.."
You have a broad mind, arnoldsa and I admire that. Sadly, this thread is not blessed with people who think as broad as you. Something I did not expect, quite honestly. But then again, they’re just people… only with a narrow mind.
The architect(s) of this project, along with the engineers, all the construction workers, the local officials and all others who were/are involved in this project are nothing less than spectacular. They're superb! Imagine that this project was conceptualized in just 2 weeks! Wow, my words are short to express my admiration for the designer and his team. Excellent job indeed!
Now, imagine if he had 6 months to prepare for the same project with a budget 10 times more than the current. I'm sure Cebu would have a much better international convention center, wouldn't it? :)
BAKEKANG December 2nd, 2006, 03:09 PM Mahirap yon. Masyado tayong regionalistic. Every other province or region would demand similar status.
Tama!
I would prefer that the capital city would be transferred back to Cebu (or Davao or Cagayan do Oro). Cebu's progress would create a domino effect and would eventually be shared with the neighboring regions at a faster rate. But then again, this is not a thread for that. Right rusty18? :|

BAKEKANG December 2nd, 2006, 03:20 PM How can you respect him bai, his views is tainted with politics and besides that flawed. Calling us "GMA-fanatics-dominated forum".
Of all those stupid remarks I have come across in this message board, this is the most stupid, no doubt.
Consider this as my last post (addressed) to you. I don’t make it a habit to interact with a dimwit.

It's funnier that you're quick to react to my post without really understanding the real context of it.
I called them "narrow-minded" for not understanding the REAL content (and intent) of my message. I called them dimwit for failing to understand the real content of my message. And I called them stupid for refusing to understand the real content of my message. Now, choose which one are you. Your choice!

Bashing is depraved and is usually inspired by iniquitous intentions. My words were expressed to critique the project, not to bash. Broaden your mind so you'll be able to differentiate the two.

Palawan's Christmas tree is more bulky and full of light bulbs. probably that made it the biggest in Asia. Pampanga i think still holds the title of having the biggest Christmas Lantern in the world. does Cebu have a "biggest Christmas something"?

We went to the CICC just a while ago.. It seems like the structure has become an instant tourist spot among the locals. There were really lots of vehicles parked at the vicinity and so many people, including families, at the flagpole site taking photos (either by camphone or digicam) and exchanging views and opinions about the upcoming event and the structure itself.
By observing the many people at the site, one can really appreciate their consciousness of the upcoming event. There was even this lady who said that he would like to "sabunot" that former senator whom the architect was at odds with.. Hehe..
We were also able to meet and talk with Mr. Villarete during the Cebu City Forums (http://www.cebucity.gov.ph/forum) Christmas EB and he gave us a lot of updates about the SRP..
He said that Bigfoot will really invest at the SRP. This was made possible after he was granted Filipino citizenship. He also narrated to us how the SRP was conceptualized during the early 90s. He said that when the SRP was still in the blueprint, it was supposed to be "purely industrial" similar to the Mactan Export Processing Zones. However, everything changed after the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis and especially with the entry of China and Vietnam in the global playing field. He said that before, there were a lot of foreign companies in the "waiting list" lining up just to get a space at the Mactan Economic Zones (hence the SRP) but now there are only a few.
Regarding the structure at Kawit Point that looks like a Spanish Fort, he said that it is really intended to replicate Fort San Pedro. In other words, Kawit Point will be like "old Cebu." This is also the reason as to why the architecture of the Sugbo Building is kind of Spanish. Restaurants, parks, and a lighthouse will also rise at the area there.

Hi, hello...
I understand your point and I appreciate it... well, reactions from my fellow SSC Cebu forumers are also understandable IMO... nice! would you happen to discuss with him on how they're supposed to name the reclamation project? they wouldn't keep it as SRP, would they? they've gotta name it something else. if Mandaue City will name their reclamation projects to Harbour City something, why not for SRP diba?
LordCarnal December 2nd, 2006, 07:30 PM ^^
@ikra
Speaking of that, Mr. Villarete said that a Japanese tourist usually chooses among Bali, Phuket and Cebu..... but the problem is, our hotels are expensive! :bash:
We're not even so developed as a tourist destination compared with Bali and Phuket and yet some of our hotels are already a big turn-off.. :dunno:
He also said that there was actually a Mactan Masterplan way back 1995.. The vision was to create a "resort" boulevard similar to Hawaii where all hotels and resorts would line up in a continuous white sand beach.. The masterplan would involve the clearing of illegal fences and other related structures along the beach line. I hope this will truly be implemented since there are now a number of resorts lining up there....
But the thing is, I think we need more "cheaper" but decent hotels in order to attract more tourists.. :okay:

Jimbu December 3rd, 2006, 03:27 AM i've found out just recently that there are a bit of updates in emporis for cebu.. from 33 highrises (all status) to 39.. i guess the main additions were the tropicana mactan residences and hotel..

^^yay 3 floors to go! i hope they won't stop there. 42-45 floors maybe? :D
demented_pigeon December 3rd, 2006, 04:48 AM ^^ yeah all of a sudden they make a big surprise and say they'll add another 10 stories.
FrancisXavier December 3rd, 2006, 04:50 AM wud that be possible... i think the building is too thin to be 10 storeys higher.
demented_pigeon December 3rd, 2006, 04:53 AM ^^ just a thought. but if its possible then why not? but if they're planning to build another structure i think they should put it somewhere around fuente. so it would look like being surrounded by tall buildings.
rustyboi December 3rd, 2006, 04:54 AM siguro 5 floors higher at the most will do. the structure is too skinny if it would go higher but if J Kings want 10 more floors, WHY NOT?! i'd be delighted! :D
flesh_is_weak December 3rd, 2006, 04:55 AM ^^
@ikra
:okay:
.:.

The thing is we have these hotels such as Marco Polo, Hilton, Shangri-La, Plantation, etc. These are expensive ones. Even in other places like Hongkong, these kind of hotels are expensive. Most of the tourists coming to Cebu would end up booking up at these luxurious ones thus the perception that Cebu is expensive when actually it is not.
I think what we need here in Cebu are more "cheap but decent" hotels such as YMCA, GV Hotel, Northwinds, Sarrosa, etc.. I'm not sure though with Parklane, Midtown and Marriot but I hope they are tourist friendly when it comes to the price. :okay:

I find this article really interesting. this is in relation to Cebu tourism and the upcoming Asean Summit. Full article (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/net/2006/11/14/high.hotel.rates.normal.asean.summit.hosts.html)
----------------------------------------------
Robert Go, regional governor for Region 7 of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry, urged hotels and resorts to implement the normal rates to encourage the delegates to the summit to come back for leisure and business in Cebu.
Some tourism stakeholders in Cebu have been complaining of the "really high" room rates in Cebu compared with the rates of the resorts in Thailand and Malaysia.
This, they said, is one of the reasons Cebu cannot attract get as many visitors as other countries in Asia.
But Koos Klein, Hilton International's president for the Middle East and Asia Pacific operation, said in an interview that Cebu does not have to project itself as a cheap tourist destination to compete with other international destinations.
"Cebu has been getting the interest of tourists worldwide, especially after what happened to Thailand. But you (Cebuanos) are underselling yourself. Hotels and resorts should rate their services according to the level of experience their guests will have in the hotel. And the hotels in Cebu have lots to offer their guests. So why position yourself as a cheap destination?" he said. (JBN/LCR/JPM of Sun.Star Cebu)

diehardbisdak December 3rd, 2006, 08:07 AM ....as posted earlier, it was mentioned in a local newspaper that next year's AD Congress will be held in Cebu but that report was misleading....actually, it will be held in Subic, not in Cebu...
One convention that North Philippines Visitors Bureau (NPVB) is banking on to push its “microeconomic strategy for tourism” is next year’s much-awaited Ad Congress to be held in Subic.

Sinjin P. December 3rd, 2006, 08:13 AM As usual, venues for events are fluid and flexible, they can change any time they want ;)
diehardbisdak December 3rd, 2006, 09:11 AM ^^ i don't think so @sinj....as far as i know, never in the history of AdCong that they had changed venue after they have awarded a certain city to host the event...i did not read any news that Cebu was awarded to host the next year's AdCong....in fact, Cebu did not even bid....did we?
Sinjin P. December 3rd, 2006, 09:13 AM Oh well, it's their loss
rustyboi December 3rd, 2006, 09:29 AM i'm sure it'd get boring if Cebu will always be the host city for the national Ad Congress. it's high time to give other cities a chance. afterall, Cebu is enjoying so much exposure with or without AdCon. Cebu's hotels and accommodation cater anyway to international tourists so i guess the local gov't should focus more with international events and gatherings in the meantime. :)

Cebu: Island Republic, The Culture of Boom
mAccess (http://maccess.blogspot.com/2006/12/cebu-island-republic-culture-of-boom.html)
The market was busy the day Magellan first landed. Merchants from Thailand, China, and the East Indies noisily bartered their wares of silk, ceramics, iron and bronze for the natives' produce of pearls, tortoise shell, gold and spices, paying little attention to the political circus then unfolding.
Rajah Humabon, eager to find a way to avoid paying tribute to the Sultan of Sulu, accepted Magellan's offer of protection and allowed himself to be baptized a Catholic. Thus began our conversion to become the leading outpost of Christianity in Asia.
Of course, that did not stop the Cebuanos from continuing robust trade with the Buddhist Siamese and the Malay Muslim communities.
Then, as today, Cebu is a melting pot for Asians of different persuasions, including the Chinese. With the arrival of the Hispanics, Cebu welcomed them too, creating a melting pot culture disparate in its origins but unified by common values of trade and entrepreneurship.
Cebu City's metropolitan area has grown to encompass two other cities, Mandaue City and Lapu-Lapu City on Mactan Island. When the President chose Cebu as the site of the Philippines' Southern Capital, Cebuanos were quick to point out that in the early years of Spain's rule, Cebu was the Philippines' capital, and the move is simply modern-day recognition of its historic place.
In the last three decades, Cebu has led the country in economic growth, with rates averaging 20% above the national figures. It has its own International Seaport, the busiest outside Manila, with direct ports of call to Asian centers Hong Kong and Singapore.
As the country's most popular tourist destination, the International Airport in Mactan handles 42 direct flights a week from Hong Kong, Singapore, Narita (Japan), Incheon (Korea), Pusan (Korea), Doha (Qatar), Taipei (Taiwan), and Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia).
Tourist spots throughout Central and Southern Philippines are also a short trip, by land or sea, away from Cebu. Bohol province, with its pristine beaches and spectacular dive spots is a thirty minute ferry ride away.
Long marketing itself abroad as an island in the Pacific, Cebu has managed to insulate itself from the political storms occasionally distracting Imperial Manila. That doesn't mean Cebuanos don't involve themselves in their own politics: Cebuano TV regularly broadcasts provincial and city council sessions. Cebu business, after all, relies on the local governments, headed by Provincial Governor Gwen Garcia, and City Mayor Tommy Osmena, to maintain their business friendly environment.
In Cebu, entrepreneurs and businessmen are the local heroes. In this culture, it is the home-grown entrepreneurs who endorse products on print ads, billboards, and local TV. It is this kind of role-modelling that has developed Cebu into the Central Philippines' center of trade and commerce with leading positions in electronics exports, furniture manufacturing, mining, and now, business process outsourcing.
Big Business has also found its way to Cebu: Major Property developers Ayala Land, Robinson's Land, and Federal Land are all here, eager to develop quality office and residential spaces for the City's booming outsourcing industries and growing population. The Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry envisions their metropolis as the software, and e-services hub not just for the Philippines, but for the entire Southeast Asia.
The old golf course, converted to the Cebu Business Park in the 1990s, wanted for locators until outsourcers discovered Cebu. Then it became a boomtown. The old airport at Lahug, converted into a business park also in the 1990s, is Asiatown I.T. Park, with purpose built developments hosting international call center operators.
Two decades ago, Rustan's was the only Manila based department store operating in Cebu, followed by Robinson's in the late-1980s. Today, SM and Ayala both operate large malls in the city, competing with the home-grown Gaisano Malls, and the dozens of pocket malls that line the city streets.
These pocket malls play an important role in the continuing boom, providing incubators for hundreds of start-up businesses, a preferred career path for many young Cebuanos. Visit any of these little malls to experience the ideas of Cebu's innovative entrepreneurs, themselves an invigorating mix of old-money and new talent.
From unique gift shops to delicious restaurants and exciting watering holes, Cebu's entrepreneurs are constantly testing new concepts. Many, like Bo's Coffee Corner, Julie's Bakeshop, Penshoppe, Oxygen, and Island Souvenirs have become nationally recognized brand names.
Bright ideas are the currency of Cebu's continuing boom and the value creators of Cebu's economy are its export designers, people like furniture designer Kenneth CoBonPue, Asia Design Awardee 2005, and Ma. Concepcion Barba, who with her daughters, and one-time student Belinda Mangayon, comprise Vanya Creations, a leading exporter of fashion and costume jewelry.
Cobonpue's designs have gained international recognition, filling the celebrity homes of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, with cameo appearances in the latest James Bond flick "Casino Royale," while Vanya's creations have made the fashion pages of Vogue, Elle, and every devil wearing prada edited magazine.
Julia Barba of Vanya laments that Chinese manufacturers often try to copy their designs, sneakily attempting to photograph their products at trade shows in Milan, Tokyo, and Paris. "I must have the most photographed palms in the world," says Barba, describing attempts to fend off would-be pirates from photographing their wares at trade shows.
Competition and copycats are a threat, but Cobonpue deals with IP violations creatively: "We're constantly creating new designs, if they copy our designs, by the time they make it to market, they're selling fakes of last year's designs."
The process of reinvention is key to Cobonpue's success, next year's designs may carry elements from last year's ideas, or be entirely fresh. It is the combination of old and new that creates excitement, the use of traditional materials with new forms, or new materials with traditional forms.
This same process of reinvention keeps the boom times rolling in Cebu: Combining old with the new, guided by a centuries old tradition of trade and commerce.
slerz December 3rd, 2006, 11:30 AM in my opinion, the CICC is a beautiful piece of architecture. and maybe these people doesn't waste they're time posing for pics if they thought that it's not beautiful.

blueguy December 3rd, 2006, 03:37 PM unsang orasa ang dry-run sa cultural presentations para sa ASEAN? wa mo plano mo-tan-aw?
Me? Grabe ang City tour ko ng Cebu (I'm from Iloilo City), I was with Cebu's VIP's tapos complete pa ang tour with guides...I had the opportunity to "act" as one of the delegates for the ASEAN spouses "Laag-laag route". There were about 6 buses with one bus occupied by PSG's. Grabe it was such a show. The kids were so cute at the Friendship park in Banilad(?) where a ceremonial sculpture and watering of trees will be held...they greeted us with smiles and cheers, some even went to make mano...then we went directly to the Capitol where there was a cultural-fashion shows with vintage car exhibits, then towards Fuente Osmena circle were a glimpse of a day in the park the Filipino way in the American era, our buses went around to check on the performers, then went directly towards P Del Rosario, where the stretch was filled with festival performers of famous festivals in Cebu. Then in Colon, (representing the Chinatown) various chinese cultural presentations were done... grabe as in it was really a show, hangang sa Magellan's Cross where we were greeted by Sinulog dancers then went back to the Capitol and were ushered by gorgeous and beautiful models inside the Capitol Ballroom... grabe it was such an unforgettable experience...(We were able to give suggestions and recommendations afterwards, mine was very practical hehehe, relocate the portalets at ground level and not at stage level...nilagyan ba naman ng separate stage...e pano pag nahulog? hehehe)

LordCarnal December 3rd, 2006, 05:38 PM Hi Van, are you with the DOT? How were you able to act as one of the delegates during the rehearsal? :)
I noticed too that during the past few days there were lots of tourist buses filled with locals. I was wondering if there was a field trip or educational tour. I'm guessing that it was just some sort of a rehearsal for the upcoming event?
Then in Colon, (representing the Chinatown) various chinese cultural presentations were done... grabe as in it was really a show, hangang sa Magellan's Cross where we were greeted by Sinulog dancers then went back to the Capitol and were ushered by gorgeous and beautiful models inside the Capitol Ballroom... grabe it was such an unforgettable experience...(We were able to give suggestions and recommendations afterwards, mine was very practical hehehe, relocate the portalets at ground level and not at stage level...nilagyan ba naman ng separate stage...e pano pag nahulog? hehehe)

Pompous light-up ceremony for CICC set this Wednesday
The Freeman (http://www.philstar.com/philstar/FREEMAN200612041811.htm)
12/04/2006
A light-up ceremony will be held at the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC) on Wednesday to officially signify Cebu is ready to host the 12th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit on December 10 to 14.
Elizabeth Francia, the chief of staff of the Office of the Governor, yesterday said the activity is going to be participated by the three cities hosting the 12th ASEAN Summit - Cebu, Mandaue, and Lapu-Lapu.
On the other hand, Cheryl Ouano, the executive secretary of Mandaue City Mayor Thadeo Ouano, said that Ambassador Marciano Paynor Jr., the secretary general of the Asean Summit national organizing committee and the concurrent chairperson of the Cebu Organizing Committee (COC) will grace the event.
Governor Gwendolyn Garcia will lead the ceremonies that will be witnessed by media practitioners from Manila.
Ouano said each of the three delegations will hold a parade to be led by their respective dance troupes who will be showcasing the festivities of each of the host cities - Sinulog for Cebu City, Mantawi for Mandaue City and Kadaugan sa Mactan for Lapu-Lapu City. This will be at around 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
The delegations will come from various points and converge at the CICC.
The Cebu City delegates will gather at the Caltex station while those from Mandaue will start from the San Miguel Brewery. The Lapu-Lapu delegation will kick off the parade from the Mandaue City Cultural and Sports Complex.
The officials from each of the host cities will lead their delegations and they will be accompanied by torch bearers and the bearers of the flags of the ten member countries of the ASEAN and of its four dialogue partners.
The three colors of the Philippine flag will be represented in the t-shirts to be worn by the members of the delegation of the three cities, namely white for Cebu City, blue for Mandaue City and red for Lapu-Lapu City.
They will all converge at the CICC where the torch bearers will light the urn, which will be followed by the switching of the lights within the CICC premises and the simultaneous switch-on of the Christmas lights and lamp posts located along the ceremonial routes in the three cities.
The CICC is going to be one of the venues for the 90 to 98 meetings that will be conducted during the ASEAN Summit. It is targeted to be fully operational by today.
Ouano said, a short program will also be held at the CICC where a live band concert will follow.
The said affair is just one of the many activities that will be handled by Cebu's ace choreographer Junjet Primor during the entire duration of the summit here. - Cristina C. Birondo

papable December 3rd, 2006, 07:01 PM A Santo Niño image rises at Kawit Point at the South Road Properties SEZ.
Existing structures inside Kawit Point include a stone fort and a building (Sugbo) with Spanish architecture. A plaza is also envisioned to rise inside where a "Cannon", which was found under the sea nearby, will be displayed.

Are these the first structures of SRP? oh, oh, not very promising, imho. I just wish srp would showcase unique and flamboyant designs, like that opera house somewhere down under, or even the so-called modern ethnic, or something like a miniature version of putra jaya (minus the mosque, and with a filipino twist). Pero wishful thinking lang yon. As arnoldsa have reminded us, we still in a third world country called the philippines. hehe, peace, bro.

BPO still growing; Cebu can lead industry in RP
CEBU could take the lead in the growth of the call center industry in the Philippines because of the province’s relatively high literacy rate, according to an economist.
But Bernardo Villegas, vice president of the University of Asia and the Pacific, said Cebu should go beyond the call center service and develop the other “equally” beneficial, in terms of job generatiion, business process outsourcing (BPOs) services, especially with the deteriorating English proficiency of the country’s human resources.
He said the BPO sector, which includes call centers, is considered as one of the high growth industries in the country. The other high growth industries are manpower exports or overseas Filipino workers; tourism, transport and telecommunications; electronics and semiconductor devices; high value garments and fashion goods; high value furniture; food and agri-business; wellness, health and beauty services; logistics; retirement villages; mining; and education.
Villegas said in a year-end economic briefing in Cebu City that the call center industry in the country is still at its infancy stage compared to those of other countries such as Australia, India and China.
This is the reason the industry is growing at a 100 percent level in the Philippines, he said. He added that the growth of the call center sector in Australia, India and China are at eight percent, 65 percent and 42 percent, respectively.
“We have a wide area of opportunities in this sector. Cebu could take the lead,” Villegas said.
Next to Manila
In a study, international research agency neoIT named Cebu as the next best potential site to Manila in the Philippines for offshore offices of information technology (IT) and BPO. This, as the increasing costs of operation and competitive pressures in relation to labor supply in Metro Manila continue to diminish the metropolis’ attractiveness.
According to the study, Cebu surpassed other seven cities in the country in two of the four key factors — people, infrastructure, financial and catalyst —which are considered to have impact on the competitiveness of a city to attract IT and BPO companies.
While Davao and Cebu are comparable in population, Cebu ranks higher as to the size of its labor pool, a sub-factor in the people factor. This is due to the larger number of educational institutions in the province, which means there are more graduates joining the work force in Cebu than in Davao.
Villegas said the country also has potentials in other BPO services.
According to McKinsey and Co., the customer contact services account for only 24 percent of the global BPO market by 2010.
Human resource services account for the highest at 28 percent; finance and accounting, remote education and data search and integration management at 11 percent each; website services and network consulting and management at four percent each; engineering and design and market research at three percent each; and transcription at one percent.
