This is my first time in this forum although I've been a lurker since a month ago when I stumbled into this website. I enjoy all the new stuff about Cebu..thanks to the very descriptive input of the SSC forumers. You guys are doing a great job of promoting Cebu. I'm doing the same thing here in sunny Singapore. During my free time, I show pictures of Cebu's sunny beaches and other beautiful sites to my Singaporean friends. In fact, some of them have visited Cebu for a holiday just to check it out and they came back with nice praises. I don't know what's in our beloved "inasal" but all of them who tasted it got hooked with it and managed to smuggle out a couple of kilos into the City State. By the way, the CICC pics look great!!! Kudos to Gwen, Archt Guanzon and the indefatigable Cebuanos who, despite the odds, have managed to complete the edifice in time for the Asean Summit. This is the "Cebuano Can Do" attitude at its BEST!!!

Keep the updates coming guys... I'm so loving this...:)

Bright forecast for Central Visayas in 2007
By Aledel Gonzalez-Cuizon
Sun.Star Staff Reporter

ECONOMIC prospects for Central Visayas in 2007 are looking good, following investment missions abroad and the promotion of Central Philippines as a tourism center, an official report said.

The much-awaited reopening of the Atlas Mines in Toledo City can also boost the economy further, given China and India’s increased demand for metal, said the Central Visayas Regional Economic Situationer (RES) for the third quarter.

But concerns such as the lack of specific manpower are hounding the region. There are not enough mining engineers, and there are few workers for shipbuilding companies.

There is also a shortage of tourist buses, which could be a problem this month when Cebu hosts the 12th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) summit.

The RES is a quarterly report of the National Economic and Development Authority (Neda) 7 aimed at providing preliminary performance information of the region’s economy, while the Regional Income Accounts of the National Statistical Coordination Board is still being prepared.

The Regional Income Accounts data are the official estimates on the region’s economic performance for a specific period.

Outsource

The RES said the Cebu Investment Promotion Center’s visits to Canada and the US this year might yield results next year.

The investment mission, held in the third quarter of 2006, invited Filipino professionals and Filipino-owned firms to outsource some of their services in Cebu.

The investment in tourism facilities and services will also increase as the national government is promoting Central Philippines as a tourism destination.

The RES reported that in the third quarter, representatives of two big Korean companies visited Cebu to look at potential tourism-related projects.

The opening of new airline routes can also spur tourism in the region.

But the report raised at least one concern: a “serious shortage of tourist buses.”

On the Atlas mines, the RES said full operation is expected in January 2007.

“The increase in demand for metal from China and India, coupled with high prices of copper, gold, nickel and silver should also encourage other mining companies in the region to increase output of these products. Prices of metallic minerals have increased by as much as 400 percent since 2003,” the report said.

The mines in Lutopan, Toledo City used to be one of the world’s largest copper suppliers. But low copper prices, labor problems and ballooning debts forced its closure in 1994.

Workers

According to the RES, the “long lull” following the mines’ closure reduced the number of mining engineers in the region.

“Now that the mining industry has started to revitalize, mining companies are having difficulty finding qualified mining engineers,” the report stated.

The same problem is noted in the shipbuilding industry and the information technology sector.

Many trained workers are now being employed by other companies abroad, while the region cannot take full advantage of the market offered by the IT industry because “it lacks qualified manpower to support these industries.”

“The government needs to take serious efforts to address the lack of qualified manpower for the region’s leading industries. Collaboration among government, industry and training institutions should be strengthened to come up with appropriate curriculum and training programs for the region’s workforce,” the RES said.

Showcase

The RES added that growth realized in the first three quarters will be sustained until the end of the year, when Cebu hosts the Asean summit.

“Aside from bringing in thousands of tourists to Central Visayas, this important international event is seen as a big opportunity for the region to showcase its potentials in the international area,” the report stated.

Some delegates of the Asean Interparliamentary Organization, held in Cebu last September, had a chance to visit Bohol and promised to promote the province in other countries.

Economic activities will also increase in the fourth quarter as businessmen will grab the opportunities offered by the summit, which will be held on Dec. 10 to 14.

Demand for accommodation, transportation, banking and other services will go up by then, the report pointed out.

^^ just a thought. but if its possible then why not? but if they're planning to build another structure i think they should put it somewhere around fuente. so it would look like being surrounded by tall buildings.

The Ultima Residences Fuente is a 27 storey condo (pero kasing tangkad ng Crown Regency Hotel Tower which is 38 storeys coz its loft type (16 to 17 feet high per floor). Then we also have a 30 storey condo - Ultima Residence Ramos Tower and the upcoming tower sa may Fooda.

Construction sector estimates 10% growth

CEBU’s construction industry saw a 10 percent growth this year compared with last year.

And maintaining Cebu’s “good political image” in the global economy will “redound” to more developments in the province’s construction industry, Cebu Contractors Association Inc. (CCA) president Charles Sy said.

“(The) economic development of a country is related to growth in construction activities. Cebu is experiencing that growth because we are politically stable,” Sy also said.

The growth in the industry was seen in the commercial, industrial and housing sectors.

Favorable

“The industry has been in an up and down cycle because of political and global events. But this year was much better than two years ago and it will be favorable in the next five years,” he said.

Likewise, CCA former president George Hong said the industry is “picking up” as industry players “appear to be busy.”

Sy, in an interview with Sun.Star Cebu, said he foresees more development in construction and its related industries after the Association of Southeast Asian Nations summit this month.

“Once they see the potential of Cebu, they will realize that Cebu is a destination for ICT (information, communication and technology) and tourism. The demand for infrastructure is sure to follow,” he said.

Commitments

Sy is optimistic that hotels, resorts, ICT parks and mining are among the sectors that will start to receive “commitments” from foreign investors just months after the summit.

He added that real estate in Cebu and Lapu-Lapu cities will experience a different economic landscape, as the demand for residential housing will continue next year.

In an earlier interview, Sy said residential developments will continue to spread in the northern and southern parts of the province.

However, commercial activities will move towards the north especially with the “flourishing” business and industrial establishments found in the Mandaue Reclamation Area, he added.

Buildings

Among the new buildings in the North Reclamation Area include the Cebu International Convention Center, Cebu Doctors’ University and the proposed 50-hectare lot owned by F.F. Cruz where the Cebu Boardwalk will build its Marina and Yacht Club.

“High-rise buildings will be a trend in the next few years, and it’s a matter of time that commercial structures will pick up in the south,” Sy said.

He also remains optimistic that the market is “ready and capable” of producing more contractors, following a strong demand in the next five years.

"WILL BE A TREND", so this means a series of construction of High-Rise buildings? Exciting! ;)

^^

Those are old structures at Kawit Point which was once Kawit Island. If I'm not mistaken, those were constructed at the same time as the coastal highway and the SRP itself were constructed. A park/plaza, yacht club, restaurants, and other establishments for tourists are expected to rise in that area according to its master plan. If I'm not mistaken, a city official said that that area there was supposed to convey an "old Cebu" environment. It's not yet finished though since it also needs support from investors coming from the private sector. The proposed Department of Tourism building will also rise there, at the back of the stone fort.

UEM Group Shows Interest In Philippines' Highway Project

http://www.bernama.com.my/bernama/v3/news_lite.php?id=234589 (BERNAMA)

CEBU (The Philippines), Dec 5 (Bernama) -- UEM Group, Malaysia's largest state-owned enterprise, has shown interest in the construction of a transaction highway in Cebu, the Philippines.

The province's governor Gwendolyn F. Garcia said Tuesday the provincial government was currently conducting a feasibility study on the transaction highway that would be built in the centre of the island and connect all the coastal towns from north to south.

It was also planning to build a bulk water supply system to the towns in parallel to the highway and also going by the auxiliary roads, for drinking and irrigation purposes.

Garcia said she was approached by the UEM Group at the recent Asia Pacific Infrastructure Congress in Hong Kong, where Cebu was the only province invited to talk about its infrastructure development.

She was told by UEM representatives that the Philippines was not on their radar screen in planning for the next five years but changed their mind after hearing her speak on the possibilities in Cebu.

"In fact, they might be sending a delegation over soon. I think they will join the business and investment forum here soon," she said.

"They approached me after my talk and said they were very interested in the transaction highway we are planning," she told Bernama in an interview here in conjunction with the 12th Asean Summit.

Cebu, the second largest province and the most populous in the Philippines, has around 3.5 million people in its 47 towns and five cities, and is considered the richest in the country.

Garcia said there were others that were interested in the transaction highway, but only UEM had said that it would put together a delegation to come and see the feasibility of the project.

"We do have the project profile already and they can take a look at it," she said.

According to Garcia, the highway will be an interesting and significant milestone in promoting development in Cebu. "Can you imagine what it (transaction highway) will open up in terms of facilities and business opportunities for Cebu? It is a macro project that we (the Philippines and Malaysia) can work together. I have seen the infrastructure in Malaysia, it's fantastic," she said.

Garcia said there were also other projects that she intended to encourage private investors to look at in Cebu.

"The province has valuable real estate properties, which we are looking at developing. If we do this, we are looking to enter into public-private partnerships," she said.

Manufacturing still constitutes a major part of Cebu's economy with its furniture industry touching US$200 million annually.

The province also exports housewares, toys and fashion accessories, among others.

"But our biggest advantage is our highly educated workforce right here," Garcia said.

Cebu has 39 colleges and seven universities, which also attracts people from neighbouring Mindanao and central Visayas.

Garcia said it could not be denied that there has been negative publicity about the Philippines, especially the political turmoil.

"But not here in Cebu. When they get so caught up in demonstrations and rallies over there and demanded the ousting of the present government, we just move on and kept on working," she said.

"Cebuanos would rather work than talk and that is one of the reasons that have propelled us to the number one spot among all the other provinces," she added.

Garcia said if other provinces could see what Cebu has done, then they would also be motivated to work and see what could be done to develop their provinces.

"And if we have all these bright spots, that will be the solution to moving this country forward," she said.

Marriott enjoys upbeat post-summit bookings
By Ehda M. Dagooc
The Freeman 12/06/2006

The strong corporate and business clients that pre-booked with Cebu City Marriott Hotel have given the hotel the assurance of continuous occupancy right after the ASEAN Summit slated next week.

The hotel's general manager Karl Ashley Hudson said that Marriott expects a 90 percent occupancy rate days after the ASEAN delegates will check out from the hotel.

Marriott will be hosting the Indian delegation during the ASEAN Summit week. Hudson said the hotel has not given all its 301 rooms to the ASEAN delegates, as it kept 25 percent of which to accommodate its long-staying guests, and some regular clients.

Hotel and resort operators are now facing problems of expected occupancy slump immediately after the Summit, as focused had been directed to the summit preparations in the last few months.

As early as last week, advance party groups of ASEAN related meetings have already arrived and kept the hotel busy.

Marriott had sought help from its sister hotel in India, to send in Indian chefs to prepare for its food and beverage service for the Indian delegates.

Also, extensive training for hotel staff was done to provide excellent service for the Indian delegates.

Marriott had converted its two executive suites to a one luxury suite to accommodate the Indian Prime Minister.

According to Hudson a number of corporate events, business meetings will be held immediately at the hotel after the summit, making a sustainable high occupancy rate of the hotel for the entire month.

From December 15 to 23 a number of events and room guests are already booked.

For Cebu, he said hotels especially business hotels are busy all through the year. This type of accommodation could only experience brief low occupancy rate during holy week.

In the first two months of the year, January to February the hotels will be at its strongest occupancy rate because of Sinulog and Chinese New Year, among other events.

In fact, on January 18 to 21 next year, Marriott is already fully booked, Hudson said.

Balikbayans take the huge share of guests profile during January to February months, he said.

Also, he said in the first quarter of a year, January to March, huge corporate events kick off like that of the pharmaceutical, and medical conferences, and increased European tourists.

In the last three years, the hotel has posted an average of 80 percent occupancy rate, Hudson said.

Cebu City Marriott Hotel is owned by Ayala Hotels Inc. and is managed by the Marriott Hotels International, a global hotel management company.

Convergys to expand Cebu operations
Sun-Star (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/man/2006/12/06/bus/convergys.to.expand.cebu.operations.html)
6-Dec-2006

CONVERGYS Corporation has announced that it will expand its operations with the opening of a new integrated contact center in Cebu City.

Renovation and outfitting of the facility is already underway and it is expected to be fully operational late in the first quarter of 2007. The new Convergys facility will have up to 700 new employees, nearly doubling Convergys’ capacity in Cebu City, including the existing Banawa operating site which also has about 800 employees. With the new facility, Convergys will have eight of the largest, multi-client, US-company-owned contact centers in the Philippines.

Full employment at the new contact center expansion is expected within the next six to eight months. Once operational, the new Cebu City facility will provide both general support and advanced technical help desk services to a variety of Convergys clients via traditional voice calling, e-mail, and Web chat as well as "back office" application and document processing.

“The nearly 10,000 employees in our existing seven contact centers in the Philippines have reinforced our strong belief that the Philippines offers a motivated workforce of highly-dedicated, well-educated, English-speaking professionals and the infrastructure needed to deliver world-class customer care," said Marife Zamora, Convergys' vice president and country manager, Philippines. “Convergys is currently hiring the management and customer care professionals that will be needed for this location," she added.

"As the global leader in customer relationship management, we strive to meet the needs of our existing and future clients wherever that may take us in the world," said Clint Streit, executive vice president for Convergys' Customer Care business. “The Philippines has a large talent pool with strong intellectual resources and we will continue to leverage the many strengths and talents of Filipinos and the Philippine culture as our company continues to grow,” Streit also said.

The new contact center in Cebu City will be closely integrated with Convergys "Global Assurance Network." This gives Convergys control of its end-to-end operations and processes, just as the company has in the US, Canada, and Europe, and assures 100 percent redundancy in case of an emergency. In the new Cebu City contact center, Convergys will deploy this network via international private leased circuits (IPLC) to avoid unnecessary duplication and expense.

Located in the AsiaTown IT Business Park in Cebu City, the new contact center will be in the 12-storey PIPC II building. With approximately 65,000 square feet of space, the new center will encompass two contact center floors, recruiting and testing areas, training rooms, modern language laboratories, conference and meeting rooms, administrative areas, and a full cafeteria among other state-of-the-art amenities. The new Convergys contact center is designed to international standards with furniture ergonomically designed for contact center work, state-of-art generators and backup contingency systems.

Convergys Corporation is hiring for many different positions in the Philippines. Please submit résumés to philippinesrecruitment@convergys.com

Convergys Corporation is a global leader in providing customer care, human resources, and billing services. Convergys combines specialized knowledge and expertise with solid execution to deliver outsourced solutions, consulting services, and software support. The reporter did not mention if the land dispute was settled already. What I know is that the land claim came in after the ground breaking. Cases like land ownership will take the court years decide. Maybe it did not cause them to stop the construction, otherwise, the reporter should have clearly stated that the construction has resumed. Because the ground breaking ceremony was held last 21st July 2006 pa. Here. (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/ceb/2006/07/24/bus/korean.firm.to.invest.p3b.on.resort.in.lapu..html) Anyway, I really hope that the construction is ongoing because Cebu needs more resort type five star hotels.

Here. (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/ceb/2006/07/24/bus/korean.firm.to.invest.p3b.on.resort.in.lapu..html) Anyway, I really hope that the construction is ongoing because Cebu needs more resort type five star hotels.

... i did not claim the land dispute was settled... I was just glad to know that despite the problem, here's a news confirming that the construction is on-going and i'm aware that the groundbreaking was done mid of this year courtesy of SSC-Cebu....hehee!

Yup, budget could be the reason. Anyway, the chairs, albeit simple and cheap, still will serve its purpose and are not showstoppers... So on with the Summit.

Rats are smart pests and no matter what defenses we put in place, as long as food morsels & wastes are never stored and disposed of properly, they just infest the area.
