PlasticSurgeon December 15th, 2006, 06:26 PM ^^Yeah..it puts an air of "exclusivity" kuno.
j-pol December 15th, 2006, 06:54 PM ^^Yeah..it puts an air of "exclusivity" kuno.
well, it actually depends on the kind of kural. eh kung pangit naman talaga yung kural at limited lang yung area ng lote eh hindi na po maganda tingnan yung bakod, dba? sana sundin nila yung tulad sa states na kung saan walang bakok yung mga establishments.

This is another first in the Philippines. Other cities in the country can only wish and keep on wishing. As a result, forumers from their respective city became wishful thinkers! In Cebu, as much as possible we make it happen. Thanks to our proven sincere Cebuano public service.
I hope that more Marcelo Fernan, Hilario Davide, Lito Osmeña, Gwendolyn Garcia and Tomas Osmeña like will be born.

Sinjin P. December 16th, 2006, 12:54 PM I just came home from SM City Cebu and I tell you, don't go to SM. It's really super-extra-mega-hyper (I am not exaggerating) crowded, halos di na ka makalihok ug makahinga. And it's also very difficult to secure a parking area, talk about poor management (my dad himself compared how fast the teller issues parking tickets at the Ayala Basement parking).
And here's the latest scoop:
Next year, together with the opening of the North Wing, all parking areas around the mall, whether indoor or outdoor, will now be charged. It will be P10 per hour for the outdoor parking and P20 per hour for the indoor parking. These are yet tentative prices. But per hour? That's too much. And in my opinion, it's not worth the pay. Okay lang yung P20 sa Basement ng Ayala kasi fixed rate na and then worth naman ang bayad mo kasi secured talaga... Hmmmm...

Sinjin P. December 16th, 2006, 01:44 PM ^ Yeah. P10 per hour, tsk tsk tsk. I hope the SM Management will rethink about this issue... Or else, all their masa patrons will fly to somewhere else...
FrancisXavier December 16th, 2006, 01:54 PM korek... here in cdo, the parking in carpark building doesnt have a charge.. perhaps, they know that they might even lose more market if they do charge..
Sinjin P. December 16th, 2006, 01:58 PM Well, in my opinion, it's okay if they charge us some parking fees for as long as it's on a fixed rate hindi na per hour. Lol, I spend at least 8 hours a day in a mall so magkano kaya ang babayarin namin, naks, grabe, lalong yayaman si Mr. Sy! :D

What a GREAT EVENING last night was! The mountain-top "Mr A" turned out to be the perfect venue for our first second annual SSC Cebu forum Christmas meet (Dec 16). Confused? Well, a second, second SSC meet will be held on Dec 26 - Hehehe. Anyway, the spectacular view of the city below was matched only by the perfect weather (a cool, breezy, starry night) and the bunch of fun-loving, beer-drinking, singing, dancing, camera-toting party animals.
The meet was well-attended. Who showed up? Well, let's see... Arnoldsa, Berniemack, Fundraiser, JamesLab, Markiiboi, Pirena, Philiwilly, Rage-Cebu, Slerz, Windshear, Wishbone7054 and our newest member, Positive Aura. Rusty18 and Diehardbisdack, who were out of country, phoned in to say "Hi" and the phone was passed around. We missed Sinjin - where were you?
And oh yeah! There were about a dozen different firework displays all over the city nightscape - unbelievable!
I found that the SSC Cebu Forum is a diverse, multifaceted, multitalented group. Hardly a surprise. Almost every professional/career group is represented here - kind of heavy on Health Care (Nursing, Medicine, Pharmacy, Med technology). We also have architects, engineers, IT/communication/sales professionals and business entrepreneurs. Hey, we even have a pilot in our group. Very cool. No wonder this is such a hughly successful forum.
Wishbone7054 December 17th, 2006, 03:39 AM Sorry, I overlooked - TJ Brew was also at the meet.

Thanks for the treat last night doc. We definitely enjoy the night with ya!

I agree....we really cant prevent the day when parking in Cebu will have a charge. But i think this is not a big issue in Metro Cebu at all. Maybe it will be a concern to shoppers in CDO but definitely not in Cebu where people got the highest purchasing capability in the entire vizmin.

Landco Pacific Corp., the property arm of Metro Pacific Investments, will transform a 200-hectare property in Cebu into a residential and mixed-use complex estimated to cost around P5 billion.
Landco president and chief executive officer Alfred Xerez-Burgos said the development of the project is expected to take place over a period of eight years.
The project, which aims to attract residents from the Visayas and Mindanao, involves the development of top-of-the-line residential units.
Landco is aiming to become a leading player in the real estate industry in the next five years as it seeks to build a track record of highly successful developments, underpinned by a strong financial base and organization.
The company will start construction next year of Hacienda Escudero, which would house tourism-related amenities like hotels, an 18-hole golf course, food and entertainment, themed shopping centers and spas, as well as residential subdivisions and campus districts anchored on the concept of the successful Villa Escudero resort in Quezon province.
Landco develops high-end residential resorts, leisure farms, first-home residential developments, shopping centers and memorial parks. It was founded by Xerez-Burgos in 1990.

Manila plans to acquire 10 Doppler radars
By Estrella Torres, Correspondent

GulfNews.Com (http://www.gulfnews.com/world/Philippines/10090268.html)
Manila: The Philippines aims to improve its capability to predict weather considerably with the planned acquisition of 10 new Doppler radars, an official said.
According to Nathaniel Cruz, chief of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), an initial three new Doppler radars will be installed by the government in the key areas of Cebu in Central Philippines, Tagaytay, south of Manila, and Subic in the north.
"The installation of these new radars will be undertaken as soon as the project is bid out to contractors," Cruz said.
Cruz said once the radars are installed, the country will improve its ability to predict weather considerably providing authorities with the capability to gauge the strength of a particular weather disturbance and recommend to civil defence officials measures to be taken in order to avoid unnecessary toll on lives and property.
Cruz said that aside from the initial three radars, the Philippines will be purchasing three more of the weather predicting hardware using a grant sourced from the Japan International Cooperation Agency.
He said that the Philippine Senate has allocated funds for the purchase of two radars while Pagasa is looking for agencies which can provide funding for two more radars.
"We plan to have 10 of these new Doppler radars by 2010," said Cruz.
According to Cruz, the Doppler radar is capable of generating short-term but highly accurate weather forecasts.

$1-M movie hopes to jumpstart Cebu film-making industry
First posted 18:59:15 (Mla time) December 17, 2006
Irene R. Sino-Cruz
Inquirer
LAPU-LAPU CITY--The shooting of a one-million-dollar feature film in Cebu would not only boost the local economy, it would also help create the film making industry here.
"We are growing Cebu's movie industry," Elliot Tong, producer of the movie "Deep Gold," says.
Deep Gold is an action thriller about the missing $10-million worth of Philippine gold when the plane carrying it crashes into the seas. It is the maiden offering of New Cebu Films, Bigfoot Entertainment's new film division.
Since the film making industry in Cebu is almost non-existent, Tong says the company has to create an entire human infrastructure from zero.
In Hong Kong or in Manila, Tong says a film producer only has to get in touch with a talent agent if there is a need for talents.
But in Cebu, he says, he and his support staff has to go to schools or distribute flyers to get people to apply.
"But the flipside is we have to explain what movie making is. We have to open the minds that when we make movies, we are creating jobs," Tong pointed out.
With the filming to be done entirely in Cebu, the New Cebu Films requires a lot of freelance staff for production planning, cameramen, drivers and many other functions.
Tong cites several benefits to Cebu with the decision of the New Cebu Films (NCF) to shoot it entirely in Cebu.
While a Filipino movie usually costs $500,000, he estimates that the Deep Gold film would cost at least $1 million.
"This is a moderate budget in the international scene but this is a very bold venture since it's the first time its done in Cebu," says Tong, an independent film producer.
Tong began his filmmaking career as a scriptwriter for Jackie Chan's First Strike and was the assistant to director Stanley Tong in the 1997 film "Mr. Magoo."
According to Tong, about 70 percent of the film's total budget goes to the local economy.
He also says having a movie shot entirely in Cebu would encourage foreign independent producers to consider the place for location shooting.
Actor Joel Torre and filmmakers Darwin Bolsico (1st assistant director), Marinette Lusanta (production manager) and Lili Esquillon (art department coordinator) are among the Filipinos who will be joining the Deep Gold cast and crew.
The three will join technical director Ken Siu and stunt director Ailen Sit.
Siu's credits include associate technical director in Jet Li's "Fearless" and "Rush Hour." On the other hand, Sit served as martial arts director for Shaolin Soccer and martial arts choreographer for several episodes of the TV series Martial Law.
Of the 26 Filipino crewmembers, 22 come from Manila, Tong says.
He adds that having all aspects of film production done in-house and in Cebu, as well, is a major move for a new film company.
Two separate teams would shoot different scenes, one for those with dialog and the other for purely action scenes, such as car chases.
Even before the NCF starts the film shoot, the company has already spent money to restore the old lighthouse, in the northern Liloan town, which is one of the sites for location shoots.
It is also spending between P2 million to P3 million to transform a place into what looks like a yacht club. And, since Deep Gold has a good number of underwater scenes, the company has built a special set of a giant water tank.
The filming of underwater scenes is scheduled in March next year. The New Cebu Films (NCF) is set to produce four to six full-length feature films within the next two years.
The filming of Deep Gold is scheduled to wrap up in April 2007 while postproduction will follow immediately at Bigfoot Entertainment's state-of-the-art facilities in Mactan.
Deep Gold, which is for international release, would be shot in both English and Mandarin.

Intercare Healthcare Systems, the country’s pioneering and leading integrated healthcare facility, marked its 13th year of service with the opening of its fourth Philippine branch in uptown Cebu City recently.
Guests of honor were Department of Tourism Secretary Joseph "Ace" Durano, Presidential Management Staff director general Serge Remonde, represented by his wife Marit Remonde, and Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia. Coincidentally, Secretary Durano delivered a convincing testimony of his personal experience with Intercare. Governor Garcia eloquently expressed her faith and confidence in the multi-disciplinary approach to healthcare and wellness. Likewise, Marit Remonde gave a statement on behalf of her husband certifying that the treatment successfully eliminated the need for invasive surgery.
Founding partners doctors Armando Soto and Martin Camara, both graduates of the Palmer Chiropractic Center in San Jose, California, have created a superb team of specialists, therapists, and instructors to assist patients with different pain concerns to make them feel better by directing them to a state of natural balance, thus empowering them to live a pain- free life. Notable doctors include Serry Pizarro, a chiropractic specialist certified by the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners-United States of America, and Ferdinand Decena, a rehabilitation medicine practitioner who specializes in back stabilization programs and sports-specific conditioning programs, mostly involving treatments of problems associated with the knee, shoulder, and arm.
Intercare integrates traditional and medically oriented models of care with alternative and complementing methods, such as chiropractic medicine, which deals with pain caused by unhealthy joints and muscles or even nerves that have been irritated; acupuncture, an ancient Chinese health art that aims at helping restore balance to one’s body, which leads to a state of overall well-being; myotherapy, a muscle and relaxation therapy that reduces tension and pain, relaxes muscle spasms, improves circulation and alleviates pain; and the Alexander Technique, which is an intelligent way to solve the common movement problems that cause chronic pain and stress.
At the end of a most interesting evening, discussions were centered on how and when to avail of the wellness program that promises overall wellness, health, peace, and harmony

By Rommel C. Manlosa
Sun.Star Staff Reporter
A MOUTH-WATERING lineup is being cooked up by the Golden Boy Promotions for the World Cup Boxing, which is set to take place in Cebu City tentatively on Feb. 25 next year.
Eight pairs — highlighted by three WBO championships, with the Philippines vs. Mexico theme –- will trade mitts in what is considered Cebu’s biggest boxing event yet, once it is a done deal.
“All (matchmaking) is done by the Golden Boy Promotions but these are all subject for negotiations,” said Cebu’s foremost boxing godfather Antonio Lopez Aldeguer in a text message to Sun.Star Cebu.
The card will feature the Philippine’s most promising boxers, five coming from the world famous ALA Gym.
“The World Cup will be the biggest thing in boxing to be ever held in the Philippines. Let’s just hope it will happen,” added Aldeguer.
Golden Boy vice president and matchmaker Eric Gomez and SGG promoter Sammy Gello-ani are both busy to put this card in place.
Gomez is now trying to sign up the Mexican champions Daniel Ponce De Leon, Johnny Gonzalez and Fernando Montiel for the event.

Mandaue eyes global status with north recla
Monday, December 18, 2006
Sun-Star Online (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/ceb/2006/12/18/bus/mandaue.eyes.global.status.with.north.recla.html)
THE completion of the Mandaue North Reclamation Project (MNRP) will make Mandaue City a “major world-class ports and harbor in Southeast Asia.”
Mandaue Mayor Thadeo Ouano said once the MNRP secures an environmental compliance certificate from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Environmental Management Bureau, implementation of the project will begin by the middle of next year.
The project, when completed, will be called “Mandaue Harbor City Project,” the mayor told a press conference last Friday.
The MNRP involves the reclamation of 295 hectares of foreshore and submerged lands at Cansaga Bay, off Barangays Umapad, Paknaan and Labogon.
The project, conceptualized in 2001 yet, is a joint venture between the local government and Mandaue Land Consortium Inc. (MLC), a partnership composed of D.M. Wenceslao and Associates Inc., Jan de Nul, N.V. Belgium Lyons and Association of Hawaii.
According to a document from the City Government, developments inside the reclamation project will include a port and harbor facility, container terminals and areas allocated for industrial and commercial land uses that will be known as Mandaue Business Park.
Ouano said that when the implementation of the project begins, shipwrecking will be banned in the area.
Ouano said the second phase of the reclamation project will make Mandaue City the center of trade and commerce in Cebu Province because of the international port.
He said an international port in Mandaue City will not only benefit the local government but “will also complement” the developments of neighboring cities like Cebu and Lapu-Lapu.
“This will be a shared success among Cebuanos,” he said.
Ouano is also optimistic the project will result in an increase in job opportunities for local residents.
“The bottom line is increase in employment and (reduction of) crimes, because when people have nothing else to do they resort to drugs, crime, etc.” he added. (MMM)

Christmas in the Philippines?
Are you still looking for a Christmas destination for this year? The Philippines has several to consider in the warm waters of its mid-section...
Palawan is among my favorite places in the region because of its relaxation and lack of development. The pristine beaches and virgin rainforests are the last frontier of the Philippines. You could spend Christmas exploring the caves and grottoes of this 400 mile long island paradise. It is even possible to rent your own private island from among the many that dot Palawan's coast.
Boracay is a more popular destination. The island is compact, commercial, and a tad crowded. Not quite five miles long, this island boasts 32 white sand beaches, dozens of resorts, and an active nightlife. Boracay is a great place to lean to scuba dive.
Central to the region is the island of Cebu. Cebu City is a great shopping destination. A variety of beaches make for easy day trips from the city. You could eat yourself into a stupor at the city's many excellent restaurants. But mostly the city's laid back lifestyle provides a great place to relax and just breathe the tropical air.
If you're still undecided about where to spend Christmas, consider the Philippines...

Offshoring today, the firm said, is no longer limited to the top cities in India, the Philippines, China, Poland, Hungary, Mexico and Malaysia as it is already making inroads into lesser-known, smaller cities in these countries. Fuelling this trend are the overheating of established locations and evolving client needs.
Considering these factors, NeoIT came up with a forward-looking assessment of the competitiveness of major cities and predicted their would-be ranking three to four years from now. In this future attractiveness ranking, Manila went down to No. 12, while Cebu and Clark went up to No. 3 and No. 5, respectively.
Bangalore, India and Budapest, Hungary would take the Top 2 spots and Delhi would drop to No. 6.

(MMM)
Goodie, but wasn't this originally 400 hectares? Hmmm

Jimbu December 18th, 2006, 08:52 AM Convention center for constitutional convention?
By Dale G. Israel
Cebu Daily News
Last updated 11:14am (Mla time) 12/18/2006
If plans push through to change the constitution through a constitutional convention, the "perfect and most convenient" place for it would be the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC) in Mandaue City, said former governor Pablo Garcia.
"Our modern history began in Cebu, so ang atong batakang balaod anhi nindot buhaton (so it would be fitting to have our new constitution made here)," Garcia said in an interview last week.
The former governor said that at the height of charter change issues last week, his daughter, Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia, received a call from Representative Prospero Pichay (Surigao del Norte), an ally of the administration, and talked about the CICC.
"Komedya man tingali nga magamit ang CICC, bisan komedya for me mas nindot and mas convenient (Proposing to use the CICC could have been a joke, but for me, it would be good and more convenient)," the former governor said.
Garcia also said a constitutional convention, if done in Manila, would have to share Congress' session hall, which may lead to difficulties.
Garcia, who is eyeing a seat in a constitutional convention, said the CICC's location in the center of the country makes it convenient to delegates coming from Luzon, the Visayas, and Mindanao.
"Pero abangan nila sa province (But they'll have to rent it from the province)," he said.
The former governor and her daughter Gwendolyn were among those who supported the need to amend the Charter, but only through a constitutional convention.
They both said they believe that the methods being pushed by other allies of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, such as the constituent assembly and people's initiative, had legal flaws.
The 81-year-old former governor was among those appointed to the 1987 constitutional convention by then President Corazon Aquino to draft the existing constitution.
Garcia earlier said delegates for a constitutional convention should be elected and not appointed so that its members would not feel like they owe something to certain politicians.

THE STORY
A young and beautiful dive instructor, AMY SANCHEZ, plans a romantic escape with her Air Force pilot boyfriend, TONY. But then he gets a call he doesn’t want--he’s been ordered to the nearest airbase.
Amy’s sister, JESS, deals with the cranky harbormaster, CHANG. He chains up their aging yacht, the Ariella, for non-payment of fees. It’ll ruin their struggling business if they lose their boat. Jess always leaves the diving to Amy since she has a phobia about going underwater.
A hidden cache of gold bullion has been discovered by the military. The gold weighs in at a metric ton, worth some US$10 million. Amy and Jess watch a press conference on TV, where AFP GENERAL CORDOVA announces the stolen loot is being returned to the people. He turns the microphone over to COLONEL DIAZ, in command of the operation.
Tony’s assignment is to transport the gold via transport plane to Manila, where it will be deposited in the Central Bank. Amy is proud of her guy.
During the flight, the plane nearly sideswipes a lighthouse and crashes into the ocean. But before it goes down, someone bails out…
The plane’s been swallowed up by the ocean, sinking in more than 2,000 meters of water. The military declares it a loss since it would cost more to bring it up than it’s worth. Col. Diaz also suggests to the media that Tony was attempting to steal the gold.
Amy is devastated. She won’t accept Tony’s death, much less his getting labeled a criminal. When TV news cameras ambush her, she tells the world Tony loves his country and he’s proud of his service. She says she’s determined to prove his innocence.
Amy gets her boat untangled from Chang and sets out with her sister to find out what happened. A tip from a military intel-ligence man leads them to the lighthouse on the remote island of Talipanan, where they meet a wacky DJ, LULU, the sole witness to the crash. Lulu lives in the lighthouse, and she’s converted it into an off-beat radio station.
A free-lance journalist, BENNY SIMPSON, shows up with his wife, CLAIRE. They offer to hire the boat to search for the plane and the sunken gold, in exchange for the exclusive rights to sell the story.
Amy figures out the place where the plane went down isn’t really deep after all--it’s only 80 meters, not 2,000. The charts were altered during the war to thwart the Japanese and then were never corrected.
Overcoming interference from a pair of German fortune hunters, Amy and her crew locate the wreck of the transport plane.
But the three girls don't realize what dangerous waters they’ve sailed into. When Amy brings up a sample of the lost gold, she finds herself caught in a cover-up, and the stakes are extremely high--because Benny’s not who he says he is. He’s a disreputable mercenary and former CIA dirty trickster.
But nothing’s going to stop Amy. As a skilled diver, and willing to risk everything, she plunges into the ocean in a life-or-death brawl with Benny. Jess is forced to make a choice: watch her sister drown, or defeat her fear of deep water.
Against all odds, both sisters surface with some adventurous answers…

Duty Free signs deal with Cebu Boardwalk
By Ehda M. Dagooc
The Freeman (http://www.philstar.com/philstar/Freeman200612192001.htm) 12/19/2006
Duty Free Philippines will soon have a home at the North Reclamation Area (NRA) at the Mandaue City, after it inked a deal with FF Cruz & Co. Inc. (FFCCI), the developer of Cebu Boardwalk.
Mandaue City Mayor Thadeo Ouano announced that Duty Free Philippines may open its shop in March, three months early of the Cebu Boardwalk official opening.
Ouano said the 50-hectare Cebu Boardwalk, which is envisioned as the premier tourism, leisure, and shopping destination in Cebu is expected to fully operate July of 2007.
Ouano said the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between Duty Free Philippines, and FFCCI has been signed already, emphasizing the opening of Duty Free shop at the area by March next year.
The boardwalk, designed as a tourism and leisure hub in Cebu, will sit on the 50-hectare area of the 180-hectare NRA-Mandaue.
Cebu Boardwalk will have an 8,000-square-meter amphitheater park, which will be an ideal venue for concerts, theater productions, cultural presentations and huge expositions; cinemas; art gallery; marina and yacht club; marina promenade; a Zen center where fitness gyms, health spas, hair salons and skin and body care salons will be located.
It will also have a tourist center, visitor center, souvenir shops, antique shops, duty free shops, restaurant strips, fastfood chains, food court, retail shops, banks, themed flea market and a trade and exhibition center.
FFCCI aims to transform the area into a world-class visitor destination, aside from spurring economic and financial development in Mandaue. This will enhance tourism and socio-economic activities, ensuring sustainable and excellent quality development.
The project was supposedly set to be completed last year, but it was delayed due to some problems.
Ouano said the July 2007 schedule for opening of Cebu Boardwalk is already final.
The opening of the world-class tourism, shopping, leisure facility facing the Mactan Channel will further boost Mandaue's employment generation, significantly contribute economic upsurge.
Aside from shops, entertainment joints, coffee shops, interest hotel investors are already lining up to start contracture within the area, the Mayor said in a press conference.
Mandaue City government owned 30 percent of the 180-hectare NRA, the rest is owned by FFCCI, a Manila-based developer.

tj_brewed December 18th, 2006, 07:21 PM CCCI to send group to US for trade talks
Sunstar Online
Dec 19, 2006
THE Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry will be sending a trade mission to Daly City in California, USA next month to start joint economic undertakings with its counterpart chambers of commerce.
The mission will leave on Jan. 22, 2007 for the kick off of a series of discussions abroad with the chambers’ Business Development and Management Service Division.
Dubbed “Dali Na, Sa Daly City,” the trade mission encourages the participation of small and medium enterprises with products and services complementing Daly City’s retail and medical services sectors.
Preparations
Preparations by the various committees are now being undertaken to organize a fitting representation of Cebu’s business community.
Cebuano businessmen are interested on Daly City because of its large Asian population. Around 50 percent of its residents are of Asian descent and a lot of them are Filipino.
Daly City’s retail and medical services sectors account for a huge chunk of the business activity in the city.
Program
Under the stewardship of Mayor Michael Guingona, Daly City is also heavily promoting small business development through the city’s economic development program.
Daly City boasts of approximately 3.1 million square-feet of retail space, including the Mission Street retail corridor bordering San Francisco, the Ser-ramonte Center, the t Westlake Shopping Center and the Pacific Plaza mixed-use office, cinema, retail and hotel project.
The Seton Medical Center, a medical facility in the US, is reportedly the city’s largest employer with 1,500 employees.
It has encouraged the development of additional clinics and laboratories adjacent to the hospital, such as the Seton Medical Office Center, San Francisco Heart Institute, the Spine Care Medical Group, the San Francisco Neuro-Skeletal Imaging Center, the Physician’s Medical Center and the Kaiser Permanente.
Courtesy
To ensure the success and order of the trade mission, the working committee, through the sponsorship of the Centre for International Education, sent project head Marylou Tan-Wong to the US last Oct. 30 to Nov. 4 for a courtesy visit.
She also met with officials of the Chamber of Commerce of Daly City–Colma led by its president Georgette Sarles.

Abacá Cebu's newest hideaway
By Rhia De Pablo
The Freeman (http://www.philstar.com/philstar/freeman200612192201.htm) 12/19/2006
Filipinos and Cebuanos in particular value good food and have a high regard for elegant dining in a relaxed atmosphere. For them, nothing beats a place with great ambiance and personalized service. abacá boutique resort + restaurant is Cebu's newest hideaway and aims to provide just that.
Abacá, which took its name from the Filipino hemp "abaka," offers great food and service to a discriminating high-end client base. With its subdued lighting and a lush garden environment, you are sure to be taken away to paradise. It's a very private and exclusive place that promises patrons complete discretion in a candle-it waterfront setting.
The restaurant at abacá features the culinary expertise of in-house chef/owner Mr. Jason Hyatt who worked for 19 years in various five star hotels and restaurants in places like New York, Los Angeles, Hong Kong and France.
In an interview with The Freeman, Mr. Hyatt shares his thoughts about the business: "We are still learning but I feel we are off to a good start. I want our customers to feel good about the restaurant. We go to great lengths to produce and deliver the highest quality of food and beverage we possibly can and we won't be satisfied until we achieve that. My philosophy is very straight forward - Keep it simple and do it to the best of your abilities. If we follow that, then everything else will fall into place."
Mr. Glenn Ylanan, who has several years of experience in some of Cebu's most popular restaurants, leads the service staff. Mr. Hyatt says, "Glenn and I are very similar in the way we think. The only thing that matters to us is customer satisfaction. After all, that's what pays the bills and makes all of this possible. Glenn has far exceeded our expectations of a Manager and has literally brought the project together and got it off the ground."
Abacá offers a California-Mediterranean inspired menu served al a carte, using wood fired oven and grill. They offer a great variety of fresh meats and seafood, both local and imported, plus a large selection of homemade pastas, flat bread pizzas, breads, pastries and desserts. All the ice creams and sorbets are home made; in fact, the only products they don't make are ketchup and mustard. The wine list is comprised mostly of New World wines with over 40 selections from P900 and up per bottle. They have a full bar with top shelf pouring and a wide variety of champagnes and sparkling wines.
After two months in operation, abacá is the talk of the town and one client made the comment that "it's the best restaurant in Cebu...period."
With his wife Anna and partners Marc and Jeni Compagnon (who are based in Hong Kong), Hyatt has created a unique and special environment that's sure to exceed all expectations. The design concept and influence of Canadian Architect Michael Gottschalk and local architect Colwyn Gaviola have helped the partners build a resort that they can all be proud of.
As investors, the partners made a commitment to support the economy by getting local in everything, from their employment of staff to the procurement of equipment and supplies. Almost all of the materials and the products they are using are designed and built by Cebuanos. Hyatt claims that 70% of the staff comes from Lapu-Lapu City and that they have established a local outreach program to support their local sitio and the people of the community abacá does business in. Corporate social responsibility is one of the major parts of their business philosophy.
Abacá is encouraging patrons to avail of their loyalty card, which provides many special privileges, exclusive access to events and priority reservations to the holder. They are inviting those interested to their upcoming events, including Christmas and New Year's Eve celebrations where they will hold special private set dinners on those dates.
For reservations and inquiries, feel free to contact +63.32.4958456 / 342 8905, or access their website www.abacaresort.com and e-mail them at relax@abacaresort.com. Dinner is served Tuesday through Sunday from 5:30pm. It's probably best to book ahead as seating is very limited and abacá has been holding quite a few private events.
The resort is located in Punta Engaño, Mactan Island, Lapu-Lapu City (just 500m past the Shangri-La Resort and Spa) and is currently in its soft opening stages. The 9 boutique-styled rooms at abacá will be open to the general public in early 2007. Room sizes range from 550 square feet to 1100 square feet and all feature a private terrace or garden with full sea view. The rooms are inspired by contemporary Asian design, featuring spa styled bathrooms and the highest quality finishes.

Wow, the excitement here in SSC Cebu forum is nonstop. Great and exciting news just ricochet around the world to energize every internet-using SSC forumer on the planet. Thanks, bai.
LordCarnal December 19th, 2006, 05:42 AM Updates from the live chat with Mayor Ouano:
- The security cameras will be permanent and more will be installed (after the summit) if there are positive effects;
- Regarding the new Mandaue City Public Market, they are still reviewing the current terms of loan offered by banks since they want to take advantage of the current low interest rates. They want a fixed rate so that they will not be affected much by inflation.
- Plaza Fair is interested at the site of the old Mandaue Public Market once the new public market is finished and opened.
- Other issues discussed were the Cebu Boardwalk, Yacht and Marina, Baywalk, CICC, etc.etc.
- Regarding the proposed Mandaue North Reclamation Area, a seaport of international standards will be built there for the industries located in the northern part of Metro Cebu. We can then expect less ten-wheeler trucks at the existing Mandaue reclamation area, :okay:

Thanks Hans for the very kind words. Finally meeting some of you guys has doubled the pleasure of my short stint this year in Cebu. It was fun interacting with you guys in the net, but it's been double the fun intermingling with you in person. What a pleasant and fun group. When I go back to my home in the States, interacting with you again in the net will surely keep those pleasant memories alive...at least until my next visit to Cebu. The pleasure is all mine.

LordCarnal December 19th, 2006, 05:20 PM Here are some excerpts from an article that I got more than a year ago:
The 26-story Park Lane Cebu is scheduled to be in full operation, and open up the total 220 business class hotel rooms early next year, Benitez said.
The four-star Park Lane Cebu is built in a 2,950 square meter area right across the Cebu Business Park. Benitez said the hotel building would be built to have a total room capacity of 400. However, it will initially operate 220 rooms in the next few years.
“Our long term plan is to open the 400 rooms, as the building is built to this capacity. But, in the meantime, we will be opening first the 220 rooms,” he said.
Currently, he said the construction is already touching off the interior finishing, so that it could already accept guests by October this year. Tentatively, he added that soft opening is set on the first or second week of October.
So Parklane Hotel is "expandable" after all, just like the CICC. Besides, both buildings were designed by Guanzon, hehehe.. :okay:
.:.
MarkiiBoi December 19th, 2006, 05:41 PM ^^ nakahinumdum pa ka ana bai? karaang tawo jud ka do :D

It will be installed somewhere in this concrete block according to one of the workers at the site.

well, sa latest survey, nagkadaghan ang gigutom sa MManila, Mindanao og Luzon pero sa Visayas kay ni decline. And Cebu is the bigger representative of Visayas so it represents more of Cebu's growing economy.

As long as you are a good citizen of our country that is concerned of our community, you will have the guts to find them always and have some descent talks with regards to our places' irregularities that is up to our concerns. I should find ways to talk to them coz I love my city...

Markii, you forgot to include the 2 Lexmark Towers.
Also, if you can try bai. Try to have an angle of the Cebu skyscrapers from Bohol's view so that the Mactan island skyscrapers will be seen.

This will be their last stop in our country....after the Philippines, d na sila mobalik kc moretire na daw ang barko. So guys, if ur interested to visit (by the way, they are expecting more than a hundred thousand of Cebuanos to visit their ship), you may catch them from January 25 to February 19.
MV Doulos is the world's oldest active ocean faring passenger ship. 2 years younger sya sa Titanic. She used to be called as SS Medina, SS Roma, and MV Franca.
The Medina or now called as Doulos was built in 1914. In today's modern world, she is manned by volunteers visiting sea ports world wide and is the world's most popular floating bookfair. With stops in over 500 ports of call, this unique ship has visited more than 100 countries in including Africa, the Americas, Asia, Australia, Europe, the Middle East and many island nations.
Doulos is recognised in the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's oldest active ocean-going passenger ship.
And it will visit Cebu this January!
flesh_is_weak December 20th, 2006, 12:38 PM considering Bigfoot's investment on the soon to be resurrected Cebu Movie Industry, at an international level at that, i think it wont be long before we'll be having a Cebu International Film Festival...this could be the fulfillment of dear old imelda's dream of having a philippine-based rival to Cannes...only hopefully that it wont be imeldefic...
slerz December 20th, 2006, 12:39 PM ^^WoW! I will never miss the Doulos opportunity :okay:

LordCarnal December 20th, 2006, 01:03 PM ^^
I was once a volunteer for MV Doulous. We were able to travel to several places back then.

By the way, speaking of CICC, a park currently constructed by F.F. Cruz Co. for Mandaue City will soon have a statue of former Mayor Alfredo Ouano.
It will be installed somewhere in this concrete block according to one of the workers at the site.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b396/arnoldsa/ouano_monument01.jpg
..
Actually, bai Arnold, I would prefer to see modern art on this spot than a statue of a politico. In great cities like Chicago, new constructions allot a small percentage of the cost of building to public art.
LordCarnal December 20th, 2006, 01:28 PM ^^
Same here.. Perhaps a bas-relief mural at that wall at the back will do.
diehardbisdak December 20th, 2006, 03:40 PM ... i hope one day, a skyscraper in Cebu will receive from SKYSCRAPER.COM an award for Best Skyscraper of the Year
.... i'd like you to see how does a SKYSCRAPER.COM Trophy would look like...here it is:
