A bronze plaque, both in Spanish and English, says that this was one of the first established outside Manila alongside with the ones in Davao and Iloilo..

I'm not sure though if the building itself is old too but I'm pretty much sure that it's a pre-war structure. My uncle once had his law office at the third floor of this building. I think he was a corporate lawyer for BPI then..

The original bronze plaque has been removed and replaced with those red ones. :bash: Or I think they painted it with red? :bash:

Cebu sees more earnings from reclaimed area

CEBU CITY--THE city government will start earning from the reclaimed South Road Properties (SRP) next year as some investors were expected to start constructing their facilities, Cebu Investment Promotion Center Joel Mari Yu said.

"I would like to believe that in the first half of next year we will see actual structures coming up," Yu said.

He said negotiations with some investors were in the final stages so the city government was expected generate revenues from the property.

University of Cebu president Augusto Go planned to build a high-end trade high school on a two-hectare lot across the school's campus, Yu said.

The Cebu City government and Go were negotiating for the lease of the area with an option to purchase, he added.

Another investor, Bigfoot wanted to start soon the construction of sound stages and a marina-commercial complex.

The company requires 15 hectares for the sound stage project and another two hectares for the marina-commercial complex.

Yu said Bigfoot planned to purchase outright the two hectares and lease, with an option to buy, the 15 hectares.

Bigfoot also planned to build a 15-story condominium also on the two-hectare area, he said.

"The sound stages project is also their (Bigfoot's) immediate priority. They want to build four sound stages as fast as possible," Yu added.

The Cebu City government also planned to go into joint venture projects with two major real estate developers.

The city was also finalizing an agreement with the Cardiovascular Hospitals of America, which planned to set up a medical facility at the SRP, he said.

There are also pending negotiations for 12 hectares with Taiwanese businessman Paul Yu, who was awaiting the completion of the access road, Yu said.

"Upon completion of the road, not only will Paul Yu come in but two or three other investors who want to come in and put up a standard factory building within that area," he pointed out.

Yu also explained that the bulk of the city's earnings generated from the SRP would come from its share of the utility sales, such as power and water.

"Land leases would only account for not more than 35 percent (of the SRP revenues). More than 50 percent of the revenue will come from our shares of power shares and the balance from our share of the water sales and other utility sales," Yu said.

...the 2nd Philippines-Japan Friendship Golf Club will be held in CEBU next year...here's more info:

*************

RP gets big boost from top Japan golf club
Manila Bulletin (http://www.mb.com.ph/TOUR2006122683170.html)
26 December 2006

The country’s rise into a premium multi-dimensional destination among Japanese tourists is getting another big lift, but this time from a topnotch golf club in Matsusaka City, Japan, according to the Department of Tourism (DoT).

"This came about at the recent celebration of the Philippines-Japan Friendship Week hosted by Cherry Lake Country Club (CLCC), which featured our country’s native cuisine, our handicrafts, tourist attractions, and even our traditional massage therapy hilot," DoT Secretary Joseph Ace H. Durano explained.

Durano said the week-long event at the CLCC was also highlighted by the 1st Philippines-Japan Friendship Golf Cup, a friendly competition between Filipino and Japanese golfers.

Organized by the DoT’s Team Japan as part of its 2006 marketing campaign, the event effectively promoted the country’s "golf tourism" as the presidents of two of the Philippines’ finest golf clubs joined the competition, the first of a continuing "Golf Exchange Program" under a so-called "sister-golf-course agreement" to foster friendship between the two countries.

At the competition were presidents Dr. Epifanio Torre of Negros Occidental Golf and Country Club (Marapara), and Renato Dychangco of Alta Vista Golf and Country Club that will host the 2nd Philippines-Japan Friendship Golf Club in 2007 in Cebu where at least 100 CLCC-member golfers are expected to attend, with Philippine Airlines as the official carrier.

CLCC president Katsumi Fujiwara joined Philippine Consul General in Osaka Maria Lourdes Ramiro-Lopez and Tourism Attaché for West Japan Valentino Cabansag in opening the week-long event as part of the 50th anniversary celebration of Japan-Philippines diplomatic relations.

The event evolved from the strengthening relationship between the DoT and the CLCC after the latter acquired the Philippine Pavilion at the World Expo 2005 and adopted its design.

Aside from the golf tournament, the festivities included a Japan-Philippines Food Fair, Philippine Tourism Exhibit, and Philippine Product Exhibition, according to DoT Team Japan Head Rosvi C. Gaetos.

Just recently, Gaetos awarded a plaque of appreciation to travel firm JR Kyushu (West) represented by general manager Hirekazu Takeda for its significant contribution in promoting the Philippines as a premium destination for the Japanese ladies market.

One of the leading travel wholesalers in Japan, JR Kyushu has been sending groups of female Japanese tourists to the Philippines, including 172 top salespersons from Japanese cosmetics firm Erina on an incentive tour organized by the agency with Baron Travel, the local ground handler.

This campaign is part of the DoT’s wholistic but market-specific promotional program strategically targeted at the various segments of the Japanese outbound market.

"The program enabled the DoT to sustain the unprecedented increase in Japanese arrivals, which breached the 400,000 mark in 2005 for the first time in 20 years," Durano said.

Donna Villa: ‘Pride of Cebu!’
Manila Bulletin (http://www.mb.com.ph/ENTR2006122683167.html)
26 December 2006

Producer Donna Villa (Marian Patalinjug in neal real) is understandably very happy and grinning from ear to ear these days. Because she has just received an unexpected and early Christmas gift which she considers one of the best she has ever received in her life!

Beauteous Donna, who’s the youngest and most successful producer (she started out as actress but was an enterprising businesswoman before her entry into showbiz) in the local cinema industry, was awarded the "Pride of Cebu (Garbo sa Sugbo)" award in her native Cebu last Dec. 16. The award was handed her by the equally beauteous governor of Cebu, Gwendolyn Garcia.

During the awards ceremony, a videography of Donna was shown to the audience. This was a 15-minute glimpse into her personal life, and her achievements, accomplishments and successes on business and all her endeavors.

Donna belongs to a powerful political clan in Cebu and so everyone in the audience was amazed and surprised to see a seven-year-old Donna selling candles in the churchyard which she did against the will of her love ones. At 17, Donna became the owner of a fleet of fishing boats with almsot 200 divers and fishermen.

Later, she entered show business as actress and producer and also was successful, with her earning awards and accolades, on top of box-office hit movies of course. Among others, she has been acclaimed as one of the "10 Most Beautiful Faces" in local showbiz, and a FAMAS trophy as the "Most Successful Actress-Producer." In the 54 years of existence of FAMAS, Donna was the lone recipient of this award. As an actress, she was nominated as Best Supporting Actress in her last film, "Paano Hahatiin ang Puso."

At the end of the videography, the teary-eyed audience gave Donna a rousing applauce. Governor Garcia said she did not blinked while watching the presentation. "We’re really proud of you, Dons!" she said. To which Donna retorted in jest: "Cebu should be proud of us both!"

Oner of the reporters who covered the event told a colleague who’s from the Visayas: "Donna is really lucky..tonight, she got the ‘Pride of Cebu’ title, not knowing that long time ago, we in Manila has already adopted her as our pride!."

Informed about it, Donna good-naturedly said "I’ll not rob my husband Carlo (Caparas) of that accolade given him in Manila!"

^^ bai, that is KAGURA, a Japanese Restaurant cum Spa...here are pics from wayblima.com:

http://www.wayblima.com/photos/quest-kagura-chopsticks.jpg

http://www.wayblima.com/photos/quest-kagura-counter.jpg http://www.wayblima.com/photos/quest-kagura-irori.jpg

Here's a write-up about this resto-cum-spa:

Perhaps it is the gentle climate, perhaps it is the charms of the Cebuana; Japanese restaurants keep opening regularly. While a growing number of Cebuanos do appreciate the finer points of Japanese cuisine, and a sizeable community of Japanese expats does reside in Cebu, supply still far exceeds supply, and the competition is fierce. Consequently, you get to enjoy the highest standards of Japanese cuisine in Cebu.
Indeed, the previous ambassador from Japan, Mr Takano, told Wa'y Blima! Cebu that the best Japanese restaurant in the Philippines is in Cebu. His Excellency was referring to Yumeya Kihei (in Mabolo). But since early this year Yumeya Kihei has two formidable contenders threatening its crown. One is Azumino, located on the street leading towards Maria Luisa Estate Park.

The other is Kagura, a stone's throw away, on A.S. Fortuna street.

The design of the place is stunningly elegant. Clearly the work of an expert architect of the highest calibre, bamboo and soaring pillars have been used to create a modern Japanesque atmosphere, a completely different dimension from the cluttered interior of most Japanese restaurants. Regrettably, however, the operators of the restaurant - who are leasing the building - lack sufficient appreciation for the beauty of their place, and decorated the restaurant with posters stuck to glass facades (using scotch tape), and tacky kitsch. Nonetheless, they haven't quite managed to destroy the ambience, and Kagura remains a wonderful space.

The place is huge, seating about 200 in comfort. While you can sit at a Western-style table, you really should slip off your footwear and slide yourself into Japanese-style seats, originally intended to keep your feet toasty during cold winter nights.

Design and ambience aside, the best thing about Kagura is, of course, the food. Not only is the owner and manager Japanese, a Japanese chef, Mr Tomoyake Oyake, has been flown in to oversee the kitchen and ensure that the 20 or so cooks uphold the highest standards.

Technically, Kagura is an izakaya, a drinking establishment which also serves food, in the form of smallish dishes which are ordered at a leisurely pace as the evening wears on. However, while Kagura does boast a splendid selection of sake (Japanese rice wine), and a number of Japanese and non-Japanese drunks do show up regularly, its true value lies as a fine dining restaurant.

Best of all is the fresh fish. We recommend the sashimi moriawase (a selection of raw fish). The pricing is absurdly low; just 500 pesos will get you a sumptuous feast supposedly for one, but unless you are a retired sumo wrestler - and they have been known to show up at Kagura - it's definitely sufficient for two persons.

The quality of the fish is superb every time. Tender salmon that melts in your mouth, crunchy octopus, slithering slivers of squid, sweet raw shrimp, and our personal favorite, divine sea urchin which is unlike anything you've tasted before.

If you've never tried sashimi, you may be at a loss at how to proceed. Sashimi is served with grated white radish, pickled ginger, and wasabi. You may be familiar with this spicy paste made of a type of green radish - unlike the Cebuano sili, which stings the lips and oral cavity, the wasabi hits you in the nose, and is a source of amusement as it causes tearing if you take too much. It should be noted, however, that one does not need to eat the wasabi. Purists prefer to leave it on the plate and enjoy the color. If you do wish to try it, you have two options: either mix a tiny (tiny!) amount into your soy sauce container, or dab a tiny (tiny!) amount directly on to the fish.

Be careful also not to dunk your sashimi into your soy sauce. While novices can be forgiven for being clumsy with chopsticks and accidentally dropping their fish into the soy sauce, the sliver of fish should never be submerged into soy sauce, or placed in the saucer holding the Kikkoman. Instead, suspend your fish from your chopsticks, and allow a corner or two to come into contact with the soy sauce - that's more than enough. Otherwise, the salty toyo will obscure the flavor of the fish and you'll just be wasting the experience.

The white radish and pink ginger serve to cleanse the palate after eating a particularly oily or fishy piece of fish.

Chef Oyake told us that his personal favorite are actually nimono, Japanese stews. You might want to try those. But be warned that Japanese stews are unlike the soups Cebuanos are used to, and best enjoyed in cold climates. If you do order a stew, the best place to enjoy it is at the one table at Kagura that has an irori, the Japanese hearth around which families gather in the northern parts of Japan, to eat, drink, and swap stories all night long. The irori at Kagura is probably the only one in Cebu, if not the Philippines.

There is one other thing that we should mention. Kagura happens to be the only restaurant in Cebu that offers its customers free Wi-Fi Internet access. We actually tested this, and it worked fine. Perhaps that is why Kagura is quickly becoming the favorite hangout of laptop-toting elite Cebuanos. If you are one of them who hasn't been to Kagura yet, we suggest you do so pronto, though we don't know if your Apple iBook is compatible with the connection - we used a run-of-the-mill Windows machine.

Note that Kagura also has a gigantic Japanese style spa in the back. This may be somewhat of a culture shock for anyone except hard-core Japan fans. Our advice would be to enjoy the restaurant as long as it lasts.

CEBU CITY -- Cebu's officials still need to make the Asean summit ceremonial route more beautiful before next month's event, but overall, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo was impressed with the summit venues here.

The Cebu International Convention Center's (CICC) modern design and the furniture at the MIP lounge pleased Arroyo, who visited both venues for the first time Tuesday after they were completed last November.

She congratulated Cebu Governor Gwen Garcia for the CICC, which she said has "the Cebuano character" that makes it better than the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) in Manila and those in Davos, Switzerland and Langkawi in Malaysia.

Arroyo marveled at the 21st century design of the CICC, but she reiterated the observation of the national organizing committee (NOC) on the need to improve the technical facilities.

"This really has the Cebuano character. And the furniture is very beautiful, ha. It's so beautiful it will knock them (other countries) out... They (organizers) were not worried about the furniture, their worry is the audio and technical facility," Arroyo told the governor at the CICC Tuesday.

She was referring to the furniture at the Most Important Persons (MIP) lounge near the Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA).

It was the first time the President was able to tour the CICC after its completion last November, a few weeks before the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) summit was supposed to start.

Arroyo was supposed to be at the CICC for the opening ceremony of the Asean summit last December 10, but the gathering was postponed on account of stormy weather.

The President checked the two-story CICC from 11:30 up to noontime Tuesday along with Garcia, Tourism Secretary Ace Durano, NOC officials, Mandaue City Mayor Thadeo Ouano, Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Arturo Radaza and Cebu City Reps. Antonio Cuenco and Raul del Mar.

"Ang galing, ang galing. It's very nice, very nice. It's better than PICC because the PICC is very old, it's 20th century and this one, the architecture is 21st century," Arroyo said.

Her 30-minute inspection started at the right wing of the ground floor where she checked the different country rooms before proceeding to the plenary hall on the second floor.

From time to time, Arroyo asked the NOC officials and the governor what the booths were for, what events or activities will be held in a specific hall and what countries will be occupying the country rooms.

She also checked the briefing rooms and the room where she will hold her press conference at the end of the summit, which has been rescheduled to January 10 to 15.

But one of the President's staff was not very impressed.

Shortly after the President entered the exhibition hall, one of Arroyo's aides tripped on the door's metal base that was dislodged from the floor.

"Hazard to ha. Ipaayos to (Have this fixed)," the President's staff said.

At the MIP, Arroyo was also happy to see the holding area for the heads of state and other foreign dignitaries.

"She was very impressed, especially with the world-class furniture and the interior design. But she said the air-conditioning has to be cooler and dapat daw pabanguhin natin yung MIP (the MIP lounge should smell nicer)," said Saul Paa, chief of the Office of the Press Secretary's media accreditation and relations office.

President Arroyo also pointed out the need to repaint the lampposts and improve the landscaping of the center islands along the Asean summit ceremonial route, from the new airport road to the CICC at the Mandaue City north reclamation area, Durano said.

"I hope our local government units--the cities of Cebu, Lapu-lapu and Mandaue--can put in more effort as they already have," said Gov. Garcia, co-chairperson of the Cebu Organizing Committee.

However, the governor was glad that Arroyo liked the plan to have an exhibit at the CICC to showcase products of Cebu and the rest of the Philippines. (Linette C. Ramos with Jeanette P. Malinao of Sun.Star Cebu)

US-based hotel chain to open Cebu branch

TO HELP boost Cebu’s quest as the next tourism hub in Asia, an American hotel developer plans to establish next year its biggest project in the country so far, on Mactan Island.

US-based Microtel Development Corp. (MDC) plans to construct a 150-room “bed and breakfast” theme hotel between two major hotels in Lapu-Lapu City.

“This will be the biggest Microtel Inn in the Philippines,” said Microtel Philippines resident manager Dean Cid in an interview last week at Table 7 Restaurant.

Microtel Inn Cebu will be MDC’s seventh development in the country. Microtel has branches in Baguio, Tarlac, Batangas, Cavite and Boracay, which opened last Oct. 25.

Cid said apart from Cebu, the company is planning to put up a branch in Cabanatuan City. He added that Microtel Davao is expected to open next year.

He said Microtel plans to establish more branches in the country to add to its worldwide chain.

Traffic

“As long as there’s traffic, ample business environment and good partners we hope to expand in every major province in the country,” Cid said.

Microtel opens its outlets to franchising at a rate of P1.5 million per room with a minimum requirement of 50 to 60 rooms per development. The average area requirement for Microtel hotels is 3,000 square meters with a room size of 25 to 30 square meters.

The construction of Microtel Inn Cebu is expected to begin in the first quarter of next year with the target soft opening 10 months later, Cid said.

He said Microtel hotels have standard design and can be operational in less than a year.

Amenities in Microtel branches include chiropractic beds, restaurant, Internet connection, swimming pool, parking space and 24-hour security, among others.

Cid said unlike Microtel Boracay, which cater to the high-end market, Microtel Cebu will focus on “budget” travelers as its niche market.

“The prices in Boracay averages P4,500 but for Cebu it will not be as expensive,” he said.

He said room rates for the future Cebu branch will range from P2,000 to P3,000.

Philippines Boxing Update!

Pacquiao update

Filipino boxing promoter Wakee Salud has denied any involvement in the decision-making of Manny Pacquiao.

"I’m not taking part in this issue. There are two cases pending before the courts in the United States. Let us leave in up to the courts to decide which promoter Pacquiao will tie up," said Salud in a text message to Fightnews.

The electrifying Pacquiao is currently enmeshed, for the nth time, in an equally thrilling promotional battle between Top Rank, Inc and bitter rival Golden Boy Promotions.

World Cup in Cebu shaping up

Negotiations for the momentous Boxing World Cup featuring the Philippines and Mexico have reached its most crucial stage and its fruition will be determined within the week.

According to its prime mover and Cebu businessman Tony Aldeguer, they have already submitted their proposals to four television networks that are keen in getting the broadcast rights of the fledgling tournament.

"We really have to know their answers within the week because if not, it maybe too late for the world cup to materialize," said Aldeguer in a telephone interview.

Aldeguer added that a budget of about US$1.3 to $1.6 million is needed for the historic tournament to happen in the Philippines.

A triple world championships, tentatively set on March 17 in Cebu, will form part of the second staging of the Boxing World Cup.

The first World Cup championship was held October of last year won by Mexico over Thailand at the Desert Diamond Casino in Tucson, Arizona.

Ponce De Leon wants to lower the boom on ‘Boom Boom’

World Boxing Organization (WBO) superbantamweight champion Daniel Ponce De Leon recently stated his willingness to risk his crown against top Filipino contender Rey ‘Boom Boom’ Bautista right at the Boholano’s bailiwick.

In an item that came out in a number of Mexican papers, De Leon, a native of Chihuhua, Mexico, has reportedly agreed to duke it out with Bautista (21-0, 16 KO’s) to determine the king of their division.

Incidentally, both fighters are being promoted by Golden Boy Promotions (GBP) owned by boxing superstar Oscar Dela Hoya.

Bautista’s local handlers led by Cebu businessman Tony Aldeguer have been painstakingly convincing De Leon (30-1, 28 KO’s) and two other Mexican world WBO champions to stake their belts in the country against two top Filipino challengers.

More RP vs. Mexico battles

Talks are also ongoing for superflyweight king Fernando Montiel and bantamweight ruler Jhonny Gonzales to face Z Gorres and former world champion Gerry Penalosa, respectively, in a pair of 12-round world title fights.

Gorres is the mandatory challenger for Montiel’s crown while Penalosa gained the privilege of facing Gonzales after the former superflyweight champ throbbed then top WBO bantamweight contender Muricio Martinez via 9th round TKO last October in El Paso, Texas.

Aldeguer’s group recently won the purse bid that will promote the mandatory title defense of Montiel versus Gorres.

Also being considered as top attraction beneath the card is another upcoming undefeated Boholano sensation AJ Banal who is set to face a worthy Mexican challenger.

Manila developer to build Cebu resort
Source (http://www.property-report.com/aprarchives.php?id=288&date=261206)

Manila-based real estate developer Landco Pacific Corp. is embarking on its first multi-billion-peso residential-mountain resort project in Cebu for the Visayas and Mindanao region.

Landco Pacific Corp has chosen a 210-hectare hillside property owned by the prominent Cebu Villalon clan to be the launchpad of the company´s presence in the southern part of the country.

"We´ve got a winner here in Cebu from the property up to the inventory of its market," said Landco president and chief executive officer Alfred Xerex-Burgos, Jr. during a press conference held at the Cebu Marco Polo Plaza Hotel.

Landco, along with Villalon-owned company Genvi Development Corp., has embarked on a joint venture to create a high-end city residential-resort property that initially requires P5 billion (US$96.5 million) to develop.

Stretching from the barangays (community villages) of Guadalupe, Tisa, Labangon, Buhisan and Sapangdaku, the development is located 330 metres above sea level, covers eight continuous hills and boasts the best views of the city.

"The property is one of its kind. Its large with high impact to the community, high value and its in the middle," described Xerez-Burgos.

He added that his company received many proposals from property owners outside Cebu but chose to first put up a project in Cebu before going to other parts of the Visayas and
Mindanao.

"Our Cebu project will better propel the company in the big league," said Xerez-Burgos.

After Cebu, Landco is also looking at Iloilo, Zamboanga, Davao, Cagayan de Oro and Bacolod for more projects.

The Cebu development is targeted to start in the fist half of next year.

Francis V. Ceballos, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Landco, said the project might took more than five years to complete.

He, however, did not reveal the specific time-frame of the project that will be highly dependent on market take-up and the physical condition of the hilly property.

"We´re still working on the final plan of the project. In fact, we don´t have the designs yet but we´ll make sure that it would appeal to a wide sector including non-Cebuano market,"
said Ceballos.

Bernie, be sure to be here during the Sinulog Day itself and during the festivities ahead of it.

Don't think twice in working here again. If its good that you don't think, then the better! Just decide right away to find a work here again. You already have a place here, not just a place, but a community. Cebu has already proven that to you. It's just a matter of finding the job that you want, that is waiting here for you to find out.

Happy trip and hope to see you soon in 2007.

Target: big event every 3 months

AMONG the thrusts of the Department of Tourism (DOT) next year is to promote the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC) so it will become known abroad.

Tourism Secretary Ace Durano said his office will be working with the Cebu Provincial Government to hold at least one big event every quarter in CICC, just to make sure that after the January summit, there will still be activities in the facility.

Durano, in an interview with reporters yesterday, said the CICC is a better convention center compared to what Phuket, Thailand and Bali, Indonesia have.

Like Cebu, the two islands are also known tourist destinations.

Jose Yulo Jr., president of the Philippine Exhibits and Themeparks Corp., has described the CICC as “a positive jewel” for Cebu and added that because of it “many good things are expected to happen.”

Yulo is the former president of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry and former president of the Philippine Stock Exchange.

Marisa Nalla, president of the Philippine Association of Convention/Exhibition Organizations and Suppliers also said that their members are already asking if they could book events at the CICC.

Nalla said that 10 years ago, they proposed to the DOT the building of an exhibit and convention center but it was not a priority.

Income and profit derived from the operation of the CICC will “equally” benefit both the Province of Cebu and the City of Mandaue. This is among the provisions in the joint venture agreement that Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia and Mandaue City Mayor Thadeo Ouano signed before the start of the CICC construction.

Mandaue City owns the lot where the P515-million CICC stands.

Durano also revealed yesterday that his office has surpassed their forecast tourism growth rate.

“Beginning of the year, our forecast was eight to 10 percent growth compared to 2005 but in November, we are seeing around nine percent growth rate compared to last year,” he said.

Durano said some three million tourists have arrived in the country.

He also pointed out that his office is still within the target growth rate to achieve the projected five million tourist arrivals in 2010.

But what remains a challenge for the country now is how to expand the “air seat capacity” and the availability of hotel rooms.

“Our limited capacity is really catching up with us. The demand is really strong but we are only limited to the number of people we can accommodate,” Durano said.

Starting early next year and up to summer of 2008, there will be 3,000 more rooms in Boracay, Bohol, Cebu and Palawan and his office will be introducing marketing innovations to include in the DOT market portfolio Russia, Germany, Australia and India. (MBG)

MCIAA obtains P38M fire truck to meet international standards

A P38-MILLION truck was acquired recently by the Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA) to upgrade its firefighting capability, pursuant to the rules of the International Civil Aviation Administration (ICAO).

Assistant General Manager Romeo Bersonda said the new Ziegler fire truck was built using German design and technology, but assembled in Indonesia. Bidding for the purchase was conducted during the time of then general manager Adelberto F. Yap, who was replaced earlier this year.

With the delivery of the Ziegler truck, MCIAA now has four fire trucks, including a US-made Oshkosh unit acquired for P24 million in 2001; an American Fire Bann truck bought for P13 million in 1997; and a Mercedes Benz.

Capacity

The Oshkosh and the Fire Bann have a capacity of 3,000 and 1,500 gallons of water, respectively. Water is mixed with foam and chemicals designed to put off fires on a burning aircraft.

The foam and chemicals help contain the fire and prevent it from spreading, to avoid explosions caused by highly volatile aircraft fuel.

The MCIAA is following aviation guidelines set by the ICAO several years ago, following a series of bombings in various airports in the world, including the one in Davao City International Airport that killed at least 20.

Retrieval machine

Aside from the new fire truck, MCIAA General Manager Danilo Francia said the airport also has a retrieval machine that can tow aircraft from the runway and taxiway during emergency crash-landings. This helps prevent flight cancellations.

MCIAA bought the retrieval machine for P31 million during the time of then general manager Benito Diamos. It was delivered during the time of then general manager Alfonso Alerre, but was not used even once because no such incident has happened since.

When asked why the retrieval machine was not used since this was delivered in 1998, Francia said never using the machine at all is preferable to having to deal with a crash-landing.

“As far as responding to safety requirements of an airport, we are now better off than before,” Francia said. (EOB)

^^ with the media attention which CICC has been getting the past months and until now, i think DOT need not exert more effort to promote it because it is already famous..hehhe! ....according to Gov. Gwen, "CICC is now the most famous convention center in Asia and perhaps, the world because of the ASEAN Summit controversy which is monitored by the international press/media.."

Fresh News!

Boulevard will open by summer of 2007!

The whole Boulevard will be rented by Jo's Chicken in which the owner Jo's Chicken will manage the whole Boulevard. And Since they can't occupy the whole Boulevard, it will be rented out to other interested tenants like banks, boutiques, restos, payment centers and other businesses for as long as it will not compete with Jo's Chicken.

Boulevard will have 2 buildings, standing at 2 storeys each. It will be connected thru a skywalk just like Raintree Mall.

Jo's Chicken will occupy the first 2 storeys of space on both buildings (A & B) near the skywalk.

Two months to clear block before Gokongweis enter

Cebu Daily News
Last updated 09:34am (Mla time) 12/27/2006

At least nine city government offices including police units located in block 10 at the North Reclamation Area in Cebu City were given two months to vacate the property to make way for the new Gokongwei owners.

The Gokongwei family bought the block for more than P500 million, according to City Councilor Jocelyn Pesquera.

Pesquera, chairperson of the committee on budget and appropriations, said the Gokongweis have partially paid the city P100 million and is only waiting for the city government to complete all the necessary documents before they pay the balance.

As part of the sale agreement, the city is required to vacate the lots within two months.

Among the city offices that occupy the lots are the Mobile Patrol Group, the Office of Special Weapons and Tactics, Crime Suppression Units, the Department of Public Service, the Department of Engineering and Public Works, City Transport Service, City Agriculture, City Oil Depot, and the Squatters Prevention and Encroachment Elimination Division.

Councilor Augustus Pe Jr., who is tasked to clear the area, said the administrative sections of the three police units would be transferred to the Cebu City Police Office headquarters in Camp Sotero Cabahug in Gorordo Avenue.

The operations section and other city government offices would temporarily be transferred to the former Kawit Island in South Road Properties, he said.

"This is just a temporary transfer to comply with the agreement of the lot buyer. The city will then construct a building two years from now to have the offices under one roof," Councilor Pe said.

Pesquera said the offices of the City Commission on Election, the Department of Manpower Development and Placement (DMDP) and the Department of Interior and Local Government would be transferred in February to the new Ramos Public Market in Barangay Cogon-Ramos.

The old Ramos Public Market had been occupied before by the DMDP, the former Ramos Police Station, Cebu City Traffic Division, Subpoena and Records Section, Homicide Section, Theft and Robbery Section and the former Special Operations Division. /Correspondent Chris A. Ligan

THE Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) is inviting investors to put up bus companies that will ply a new route that begins in Minglanilla and ends in the Mactan Export Zone.

It will ban jeepneys from this route, the agency said.
LTFRB 7 Director Rogelio “Jingjing” Osmeña said that his office will also welcome investors who will operate vans-for-hire, as long as they adopt a “point-to-point” system. This means vehicles can only pick up passengers from a terminal and bring them straight to their destination.

Investment

For buses, each operator is required to put up at least 15 units, while investors for V-hires are required to get at least three units.

For 15 units, a bus operator needs to invest from P15 million to P20 million, including the acquisition of the required garage, Osmeña said.

So far, Osmeña added that Metro Cebu KMK Lines is the only new bus company plying the Minglanilla-SM route, with 15 air-conditioned buses. The ride costs P15 to P20. KMK buses use P. del Rosario St. and N. Bacalso Ave., Cebu City.

Qualified applicants will be issued a franchise that will allow them to travel from Minglanilla to the export zone, via Talisay City, South Road Properties, Plaza Independencia, the North Reclamation Area and Marcelo B. Fernan Bridge.

Convenience

“Air-conditioned buses will give convenience to passengers. Secondly, buses can accommodate more passengers than jeepneys,” Osmeña said.

The route allows commuters to avoid Tabunok, Talisay City and Bulacao, Cebu City, where heavy traffic is observed during peak hours.

As to the point-to-point system, Osmeña said that an operator may choose the route he wants to operate in, such as Cebu City-Liloan, Cebu City-Consolacion or Cebu City-Danao City, among others.

Drivers can only pick up passengers from the North Bus Terminal and head straight to their destination. The franchise will prohibit drivers from picking up passengers along the way.

“Drivers who violate the rules will be fined,” Osmeña said.

He hopes this scheme will decongest traffic in Northern Cebu. “The passengers will be happy because travel time will be reduced,” he added.

I've interviewed some workers and they're unsure what they're working for  But when I mentioned Robinsons, they kinda said yes. There are no renderings, there's no hint on the fence as to what company owns it. But it's kinda large, larger than Ayala's Rustan's Building. So we might as well wait, they're now working on the 2nd floor of the structure

Where is this?

^^ Guys, im not sure if we have the same construction in mind but I guess you are referring to the upcoming Sta Lucia Mall in Consolacion which will be located within Sta Lucia Business Center in Consolacion.

Sta Lucia Business Center Consolacion is a planned community of mixed use development that can be used for medium rise office towers, residential townhouses, a shopping mall, commercial condo and mixed-use shopping, entertainment and commercial areas.

This project is being marketed by Orchard Properties – one of Sta Lucia’s marketing arms.

1.03 million tourists visited CV in first 10 months

Thursday, December 28 2006 @ 06:45 AM GMT

Cebu News

Domestic and foreign tourist arrivals to Central Visayas surged 18.74 percent to 1.03 million tourists since January until October this year compared to the same period last year, a senior tourism official said.

Cebu also got the biggest share of the tourism market in Central Visayas this year, according to Patria Roa, Department of Tourism (DOT) Central Visayas director.

Roa said Central Visayas remained the top destination of tourists in the country.

Tourism Secretary Jose “Ace” Durano earlier said the region is one of the top tourist drawers in the country.

”Region 7 is still the top destination of tourists. Take note, we already have an increase of 18.74 percent for the last 10 months and we still have to collate the data for November and December, a peak season for tourists,” she said.

About 1,032,832 foreign and domestic tourists have visited Cebu in the past ten months with Bohol second with 182,497, followed by Negros Oriental with 129,644 and Siquijor, 9,662,” Roa said.

On domestic arrivals, Cebu was visited by at least 642,000 local tourists, Bohol with 141,592, Negros Oriental, 110,774 and Siquijor, 6,232, the data revealed.

The data further showed that for foreign arrivals, 390,156 foreign nationals visited Cebu, 40,905 in Bohol, 18,900 in Negros Oriental and 3,430 Siquijor.

Roa said Cebu has been a favorite tourism destination of tourists because of its white, sandy beaches and dive spots and the world-class amenities such as an international airport, hotels, resorts, restaurants and booming economic activities.

”Tourists love to come here because we almost have everything. When they go to other countries like Japan, Korea or other parts in the Untied States or Europe, they have to travel very far before they could enjoy their visits,” she said.

”In Japan for instance, they have to spare a day to travel to the airport but here they can do a lot of things like eating, swimming and in just 15 to 30 minutes hop to our airport,” she said.

South Korea remains to be at the top of the tourism market for foreign arrivals with 141,693 while Japan came second in the list with 106,680, the director said.

Other countries which landed in the top five included United States of America with 53,886, Taiwan, 21,847 and Germany, 12,398.

Roa is optimistic the tourism industry in Central Visayas will further increase next year but she expressed concern over some problems of the industry earlier mentioned by secretary Durano – the lack of hotel rooms and air seats.

There are about 12,000 rooms in Central Visayas with 9,000 in Cebu, Roa said.

”I have been saying all along that we have a shortage of rooms. In Mactan Island, we only have 2,000 rooms. All in all in Cebu, there are only 9,000 rooms. Imagine the bulk of the tourists that come here every year and with only these rooms available?” she said.

Roa also said the political noise in the country with the elections set next year may affect the arrival of tourists in the region. (PNA)

CICC now ready to host ASEAN summits -Lecaros

Wednesday, December 27 2006 @ 06:53 PM GMT

ASEAN

The newly-completed Cebu International Convention Center (CICC) is ready to host most activities of the 12th Summit of the Association of Southeast Nations from January 10-15, 2007, according to Philippine Ambassador to Malaysia Vic Lecaros, spokesman of the ASEAN Summit.

However, Lecaros said, the leaders' meeting will still be held at the Shangri-La Mactan Island's Resort and Spa, one of the country's most exclusive resorts.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo inspected the CICC during her latest trip to Cebu City last Tuesday.

During her inspection, she was accompanied by Cebu Governor Gwen Garcia, Tourism Secretary Ace Durano and Cebu City Congressman Antonio Cuenco.

The ASEAN Summit and related summits were originally scheduled from December 10-14 but had to be postponed because of typhoon "Seniang."

Lecanos said all ASEAN leaders from the other nine member countries --Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam-- have confirmed their attendance.

The Philippines, one of the original five founding members of ASEAN, is this year's chairman of the ASEAN standing committee. President will chair the 12th ASEAN Summit as well as the ASEAN Plus Three Summit and the 2nd East Asia Summit.

The leaders of the six ASEAN dialogue partners, Australia, China, Japan, India, New Zealand and the Republic of Korea have also confirmed to attend the summit.

Lecaros also disclosed that at this early, there are already inquiries from local and international organizations to hold their meetings at the CICC after the summit.

"This is a good sign for Cebu," he said.

With this new development, Lecaros said, the government of Mandaue City, where the CICC is located, will develop the surrounding areas to spur business activities.

This could be the most awaited "Ceboom" Part 2, Lecaros, who hails from Cebu said. (PNA)

US-based Microtel hotel chain to open Cebu branch

Thursday, December 28 2006 @ 06:48 AM GMT

Business

Cebu's quest to become the next tourism hub in Asia got a boost after American hotel developer Microtel recently announced plans to establish next year its biggest project in the country so far on Mactan Island.

US-based Microtel Development Corp. (MDC) plans to construct a 150-room "bed and breakfast" theme hotel between two major hotels in Lapu-Lapu City.

"This will be the biggest Microtel Inn in the Philippines," said Dean Cid, Microtel Philippines resident manager.

Microtel Inn Cebu will be MDC's seventh development in the country. Microtel has branches in Baguio, Tarlac, Batangas, Cavite and Boracay, which opened last Oct. 25.

Cid said apart from Cebu, the company is planning to put up a branch in Cabanatuan City.

He added that Microtel Davao is expected to open next year.

Cid also bared that Microtel plans to establish more branches in the country to add to its worldwide chain.

"As long as there's traffic, ample business environment and good partners we hope to expand in every major province in the country," he said.

Microtel opens its outlets to franchising at a rate of P1.5 million per room with a minimum requirement of 50 to 60 rooms per development.

The average area requirement for Microtel hotels is 3,000 square meters with a room size of 25 to 30 square meters.

The construction of Microtel Inn Cebu is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2007 with the target soft opening 10 months later, Cid said.

He said Microtel hotels have standard design and can be operational in less than a year.

Amenities in Microtel branches include chiropractic beds, restaurant, Internet connection, swimming pool, parking space and 24-hour security, among others.

Cid said unlike Microtel Boracay, which cater to the high-end market, Microtel Cebu will focus on "budget" travelers as its niche market.

"The prices in Boracay averages P4,500 but for Cebu it will not be as expensive," he said.

He said room rates for the future Cebu branch will range from P2,000 to P3,000. (PNA)

YEARENDER: The big one that got away

Thursday, December 28 2006 @ 06:41 AM GMT

ASEAN

Cebu's biggest event in 2006 did not happen. Bar none, it could still be Cebu’s biggest event in 2007.

It’s the 12th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit, which has become the proverbial fisherman’s tale of “the big one that got away.”

The ASEAN Summit, originally set on Dec. 10 to 14, was reset to January 10 to 14, all because of typhoon Seniang.

It was so big many things nobody thought would happen did in fact happen.

Hooded killers who left close to 200 dead suspected criminals and former convicts in their bloody trail of cold-blooded executions since Dec. 2004 suddenly stopped as the summit nears.

Cebu Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal, who denounced the vigilante-style executions as symptoms of a “creeping culture of violence,” felt relieved.

And in a span of only eight months, the Cebu Provincial government, working on a 24-hour frenzy, finished the construction of the P515-million Cebu International Convention Center (CICC) on a 3.8-hectare lot at the Mandaue City reclamation area.

The CICC is one of the venues of the ASEAN Summit, which gathers together the heads of states of the 10-member ASEAN and its six dialog partners -– China, Japan, India, Australia, South Korea and New Zealand.

Originally designed as a sports-themed “megadome” during the term of former Cebu Gov. Pablo Garcia, its construction was doomed when majority members of the Provincial Board blocked the approval of its P250-million budget.

When Philippine officials announced that Cebu will host the ASEAN Summit this year after Myanmar refused to host it, its construction was revived.

Surprisingly, the Provincial Board approved its construction, now redesigned as an international convention center. In addition, the board increased its budget from P250 million to P515 million.

Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia personally supervised the construction of the CICC amid widespread skepticism it won’t be finished in time for the summit.

When the CICC was blessed and inaugurated on Dec. 8, 2006, Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto Romulo described it as “nothing short of a miracle.”

Hours later, barely three days from the opening of the summit, Philippine officials announced its postponement due to typhoon Seniang which threatened to smash Cebu and Central Visayas.

But typhoon Seniang, though packing maximum sustained winds of 120 kilometers per hour (kph) and gustiness of 150 kph, failed in its role as the perfect villain and blew off-course the summit venues.

Even with Seniang’s mischief, Cebu stands to gain a windfall of P1.2 billion in economic benefits in the form of infrastructure and tourism related events for hosting the summit.

Philippine Ambassador to Malaysia Victoriano Lecaros, ASEAN Summit spokesman, said the summit now finally set on Jan. 10 to 14, will finally put Cebu in the world map as an island paradise.

Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmena, who prepared a lavish reception for foreign journalists covering the summit, joined Tourism Secretary Ace Durano in anticipating an increase in tourists coming from Japan and South Korea, Cebu’s main tourism markets.

Barring Seniang’s ilks, Cebu's biggest event that did not happen this year could still be Cebu’s biggest event next year. (PNA)

Microsoft to open R&D facility here

Microsoft Philippines is going to set up a Research and Development (R&D) facility in Cebu in a year's time realizing the good pool of IT talents here.

"There is a great deal of content developers available in Cebu. In think, in one year we could already set up the R&D center in Cebu," said Microsoft Philippines managing director Antonio Javier yesterday, during the opening of the first regional office of Microsoft in Southern Philippines.

The grand opening yesterday, which was graced by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, signals Microsoft's confidence in Cebu to drive growth in knowledge economy-based industries.

According to Javier, in order to pursue the plan of setting up a R&D facility here, the company has to ensure the continuous supply of human resource. To do this, the company has to tie up with schools so that they would offer courses, and curriculum that are geared to provide manpower requirements for this facility.

Although Microsoft's presence had been here for over a decade, the company had only been channeling its presence in Cebu through their partners.

Starting with its Microsoft Cebu facility that will serve as the Southern Philippine headquarters, this company is looking forward to more investments in Cebu.

Javier said there are several content development products that Microsoft will focus for its Cebu R&D center, these are on mobile applications, software products for outsourcing sector, like call centers, and the entire Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) industry.

The Microsoft Southern Philippines office is located on the 7th Floor of the Skyrise I.T. Building in Cebu's Asiatown I.T. Park, a special economic zone.

"Cebu City was chosen to be Microsoft's headquarters in the south due to its competitive climate and vibrant business activities. Cebu is also geared to become the next information technology hub in the country," said Magtanggol Bawal, sales operation director for Microsoft Southern Philippines.

In her speech during the formal opening ceremony held yesterday, Arroyo said the entry of Microsoft's strong presence to Cebu and Southern Philippines is bringing new chapter of the Information Age for Visayas and Mindanao. Bawal said that the Visayas and Mindanao markets are very important to Microsoft 's business, contributing to the phenomenal growth that it achieved in the current year alone.

"This major development is due to our renewed focus on building business in the enterprise and small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

Javier added that the entry of Microsoft to Cebu, or Southern Philippines through the establishment of an office facility, is not only to strengthen its market hold in the commercial software business, but also to develop infrastructure, providing IT education down to the grassroots, and help the government in terms of promoting Internet safety, and curbing Intellectual Property Rights (IRP) problem.

If Microsoft will pursue its plan to open its R&D center in Cebu, in a year's time, this will make Cebu the home of large IT software research and development companies, such as Lexmark, Nec Telecoms Software, Epson Precision, among others.

Asean summit, CICC top list

WEATHER is to a newspaper what wallpaper is to a well-designed interior. You don’t notice it, unless it’s bad.

This year, stormy weather stole the thunder from what would have been the biggest story of the year, the Asean Summit being held for the first time in Cebu.

Instead, it’s the summit’s postponement on account of typhoon Seniang that leads the top news stories of 2006.

When President Arroyo announced last February that Cebu will host the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) summit and related meetings, she triggered preparations that eventually cost some P1.07 billion.

National agencies picked up about half of that tab. The Provincial Government spent for the Cebu International Convention Center, which now costs at least P515 million.

Despite its postponement to January, the summit will still give Cebu’s tourism and service sectors a windfall. They’ll also get the chance to pitch their attractions to untapped segments of the Asian market.

Agreements signed here, or the Cebu Declarations, will still put the island in the lexicon of regional negotiations on trade, counter-terrorism and other issues that cross borders.

But the postponement hurt. It came a day after five countries warned that terrorists could be “in the final stages” of mounting an attack in Cebu. Despite the organizers’ good intentions, the postponement cast doubt on how prepared Cebu was for its moment on the international stage.

And that’s something that can only be weathered by a successful hosting in January next year. (See essay, A8)

The year’s other top stories are:

2) The Leyte landslide

Rain-loosened, boulders and soil from a mountain buried the entire Barangay Guinsaugon in St. Bernard, Southern Leyte last Feb. 17. Nine days later, when all hope of finding survivors had faded, the official death toll stood at 973 persons.

Southern Leyte Gov. Rosette Lerias hailed an international team of volunteers and rescuers that arrived swiftly at the site.

But the disaster also highlighted the need to invest more in disaster preparedness, such as by making hazard maps—then actually following them by relocating threatened communities.

3) Charter change

President Arroyo and her allies this year removed any doubt that they intend to push Charter change as far as public opinion will let them.

After a 12-hour marathon session, administration allies in the House of Representatives passed in early December a resolution to convene Congress into a constituent assembly. The Senate had no say in the matter.

Facing the threat of street protests, the House archived that resolution, and President Arroyo said on Dec. 13 that the time to amend the 1987 Constitution would come “when the people deem it ripe and needful, and in the manner they deem proper.”

Less than a week later, she described Charter change as “a reality” that the country must face and accept.

4) GMA’s second impeachment crisis

Earlier in the year, numbers also saved President Arroyo. The House of Representatives, dominated by her supporters, threw out on Aug. 24 the second bid to impeach her.

Voting 173 to 32, with one abstention, the House adopted the committee on justice’s report that rejected the impeachment case filed by the Black and White Movement. They said it was insufficient in substance.

The Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines refused to support a new impeachment complaint against Arroyo, but said it respected the position of those that wish to continue using the impeachment process “to arrive at the truth.”

5) A stronger peso

For over a decade, Central Visayas has contributed more than 10 percent of the country’s export earnings. This year, total exports from the region grew about 11.7 percent from January to June, or $2.36 billion from $2.1 billion in the same period in 2005, the Department of Trade and Industry said.

Cebu accounted for 95 percent of the region’s exports.

When the peso closed at P50.01 to the US dollar last Oct. 6, Cebu’s exporters quickly reminded the government to deliver its promise of help for the sector.

Exporters have said they need the peso to stay at P51 for them to remain competitive, and that any level below P54 would mean “the exporters’ slow death.”

6) Tourism in ‘Central Philippines’

Malacañang announced this year the approval of P60.8 billion worth of infrastructure investments for Cebu until 2010, mostly for railways, ports and tourism support.

That amount represents 32 percent of the P190-billion infrastructure budget for the Central Philippines “mega-region.”

Cebu, in exchange, must take the lead in bringing more tourists into the country.

President Arroyo revealed her goals for Central Philippines, which encompasses Southern Tagalog, Bicol and the Visayas Regions, in her State of the Nation Address.

7) Nursing exam leaks

An amicable settlement of sorts was reached on Oct. 26 by parties in the lawsuit seeking to nullify the June 2006 nursing board examinations. This removed any obstacles to new nurses raring to take oath and receive their license.

Malacañang caused an uproar when it earlier approved a retake of the scandal-ridden exams, which would have meant extra expense and agony for some 17,000 successful examinees.

But in October, it held back from issuing the official retake order, to await the National Bureau of Investigation’s report on how some exam questions had been leaked and who could be made to pay for it.

The Cebu City Council and Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia supported a call to exempt successful examinees from the Visayas and Mindanao, citing initial reports that the leaks only affected parts of Luzon.

8) Metro Cebu’s water war

Here’s what’s at stake: an additional 40,000 cubic meters of water each day, from a project that costs some P2 billion, while investors raise the need for secure power and water before they’ll come to Cebu.

In September, officials of Mandaue City, Lapu-Lapu City and the towns of Consolacion and Cordova found that enough to endorse the Carmen Bulk Water Supply project.

Others, however, were bothered by a few other figures: the selling price of P25.55 per cubic meter, or a development cost refund of P75 million to P200 million in case a winning challenger takes over the project from the proponent.

Despite fears of offending the World Bank, one of the country’s largest financing partners, the Cebu City Council approved last Oct. 4 a resolution pushing for an open bidding, instead of a price challenge on the unsolicited proposal put forward by an Ayala-led consortium.

9) International lawmakers in Cebu

Congress spent P20 million to host the 17th Asean Inter-Parliamentary Organization general assembly in Cebu City.

Later, the organizers said they got their money’s worth. The assembly proceeded without major hitches and ended with the enactment of important measures, including the call to end hostilities between Lebanon and Israel.

An estimated 200 delegates joined the conference from Sept. 11 to 15. Some 30 resolutions were approved, emphasizing cooperation in Southeast Asia in the areas of affordable energy, inter-faith dialogue and human rights.

10) Dela Victoria’s murder solved

Five months after the murder of Cebu City official Elpidio “Jojo” dela Victoria, SPO1 Marcial Ocampo was sentenced to spend 20 to 40 years in jail.

The victim’s family believes that three other men, including the mastermind, ought to face punishment as well. At the time of his death, dela Victoria was director of the Bantay Dagat Commission and the market administrator.

He was shot thrice on April 12, while about to open the gate of his house in San Roque, Talisay City.

well then, it's a good thing if iba nga...para may Sta Lucia na sa area may Robinsons pa....

Here's Sta Lucia Town Square in Consolacion

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/tj_brewed/stalucia1.jpg

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/tj_brewed/stalucia2.jpg

A mere 30 minute drive from Metro Cebu. A planned community of mixed use development that can be used for medium rise office towers, residential townhouses, a shopping mall, commercial condo and mixed-use shopping, entertainment and commercial areas.

Sta. Lucia Town Square. The new urban center of Consolacion.

mura na siya ug CBP ug dating...naka-anha na ko earlier this year...dako-dako pud ug area, lapad ang roads ug naay mga center islands and lampposts...locators na lang ang kulang...

and yeah, ang underconstruction na building na naa along the highway is not Robinson's lacion, but is most the long proposed Consolacion Town Center, naa na siya'y rendering na gi-post sa una...nindot pud, medyo naay pagka mediterranean(?) ang architecture...it's a commercial complex owned and probably operated by the local government of lacion...

IMO, dili pa ready ang lacion for a Robi kay basin mamatay nya ang small businesses, but on the other hand, lacion needs to grow ASAP, especially with the planned Mandaue NRA, traffic will then no longer have to pass by lacion, so naay possibility na mabiyaan ang town in terms of development kay dili naman adto sa town center mo-agi ang traffic...

or another possible scenario would be that development would instead sprout on the Tayud area, so mura na ug Tabunok ang Talisay-proper ang scenario...

either way, given the right management, the town is sure to prosper, and perhaps evolve into another city...the thought of seeing high-rises shoot up the sky in lacion really excites me...

just my 2-cents, mind you, wa ko'y background in economics or urban planning, just sharing the opinion of a common observer like me...:)

Korean firm to pursue Mactan resort project
Sun-Star Online (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/ceb/2006/12/29/bus/korean.firm.to.pursue.mactan.resort.project.html)
29-Dec-06

DESPITE a pending land dispute, the construction of a P3-billion hotel and resort in Lapu-Lapu City will push through, an official from the Philippine BXT Corp. (Phil-BXT) said.

“I bought the land in good faith and I have titles,” Phil-BXT chairman Yong Jun Park told a press conference last Wednesday at the Yu Hee Jeong Korean restaurant.

Korean developer Phil-BXT held a groundbreaking ceremony last July 21 of the planned 7.5-hectare Imperial Palace Waterpark Resort and Spa in Barangay Maribago, Lapu-Lapu City.

Bruce Chiongbian, president of Joil UBF Corp., which owns the project site, said that of the six land titles that were issued to Park, one is subject to opposing claims by two groups.

Lot owner

Chiongbian, in a phone interview, declined to give further details as the case is now pending in court.

He said, though, that Joil UBF is the owner of the entire 7.5-hectare property that Phil- BXT will develop into a five-star hotel and resort.

Park said he will push through with the project and stick to the 2009 target completion despite the problem.

According to a press statement, Phil-BXT has secured all the necessary government permits in the last quarter of this year.

Excavations, footings and other preliminary engineering works have also been completed, as construction will be in full swing by January next year.

Park said the hotel’s soft opening is scheduled in December 2007. He said 200 rooms will be available by then.

Opportunity

Park, who came to Cebu early this year for a vacation, saw the shortage of hotel and resort accommodation, especially on Mactan Island. He said he found the problem to be an opportunity for investment.

Philippine-BXT Corp., owned and operated by Korean stakeholders, plans to tap Imperial Palace Hotel in Seoul to run and manage the future resort.

Known to be one of Korea’s finest hotel chains, Imperial Palace Hotel has been recognized for its excellence in providing world-class luxury hotels. This will be the firm’s first venture in the Philippines.

The world-class resort will have 616 rooms in six medium and three low-rise buildings. There will also be 40 single-units, complete with amenities.

The waterpark will occupy two hectares of the entire property, Park said.

An earlier statement from Shin Chul-Ho, Imperial Palace chairman and chief executive officer, said, “the waterpark won’t just be a swimming pool, it will be a milestone in the water entertainment business, and Imperial Palace Waterpark Resort will become a hotel with a true imperial scent”.

Park said once the resort-hotel becomes operational, it is expected to generate at least 1,000 jobs.

“The number will increase or decrease depending upon the hotel’s productivity,” he said.

He also said the project is a way to lure more Korean tourists to Cebu. (MMM)

I think that it's better that we're just going to pay for the shirt and the print. Let's just give the size of the shirt that we want and the guys that will do the job will take care of everything.

It's better that way I think because we'll have a uniform print, color and brand of the shirt. It's like the new policy of USC's new uniform. In this way we can avoid looking like USJR ladies uniform that some are green, dark green and some are faded. Seems like it represents chaos.

Josenians out there! Please don't get me wrong! It's not your school, it's just the ladies uniform. Okies?
