Just a month ago… things started to sour with Cebu’s hosting of the 12th ASEAN Leaders’ Summit, which was eventually postponed due to super typhoon "Reming." With that postponement, many people thought that Cebu’s hosting of the ASEAN Summit was a goner, finished or kaput! Add those pesky travel advisories sent by the various foreign embassies that surely kept many foreigners away from the shores of Cebu.

Indeed, many Cebuanos took those travel advisories quite seriously; after all, the last thing we wanted to see happen during the ASEAN Summit was for a bomb to explode within our midst. But while Australia was one of the countries that issued a travel advisory, their own Prime Minister, John Howard, violated that warning and went to Cebu anyway.

But all these "monkey wrenches" thrown our way did not in any way dampened the "indomitable Cebuano spirit"… a phrase that Cebu Gov. Gwen F. Garcia used passionately when she formally opened the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC). Indeed, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo (GMA) gave Cebu the rare opportunity to host its very first international convention and by God’s grace (mind you, it was not by hook or by crook) we pulled this miracle as Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto Romulo told us at the CICC last Monday.

Like what we said before, we give credit to this successful hosting of the ASEAN Summit to Señor Sto. Niño de Cebu and we expect a record-breaking crowd for this Saturday’s solemn procession and also a huge crowd for this Sunday’s Sinulog Festival.
While most of the ASEAN Summit’s activities were done at Shangri-La’s Mactan Island Resort & Spa last Monday, the whole entourage of 16 world leaders met at the CICC. Aside from President Arroyo, the leaders of ASEAN were in full attendance — Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, Thai Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont, Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, Cambodia’s Samdech Hun Sen, Laos Prime Minister Bouasone Bouphavanh, Myanmar Prime Minister Gen. Soe Win, Malaysia’s Ahmad Badawi, Indonesian President Susilo Bamban Yudhoyono, Brunei’s Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, and Timor Leste’s Jose Ramos Horta.

They were joined by the ASEAN dialogue partners. Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao, South Korea’s Roh Moo-Hyun, Australian Prime Minister John Howard, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and New Zealand’s Helen Clark.

As I got in the CICC, the leaders were already inside for the 2nd East Asia Summit (EAS). Since that was a closed-door conference, the huge throng of international, national and local media huddled up at the main Plenary Hall. By noon, the EAS was over and the world leaders went up to the Plenary Hall for the formal signing ceremonies and the official photograph of the ASEAN leaders and their partners.

I’ve been a journalist for 20 years now and have attended or covered several international conferences. But honestly, it was my first coverage of the ASEAN Summit and I guess I also speak for my colleagues in the Cebu media, who otherwise could never have had the opportunity to see those world leaders up so close. As the world leaders took their places at the Plenary Hall, I felt quite emotional that all this was happening… despite all what the Pinoy crabs tried to do to derail Cebu’s hosting of the summit.

But there were some tense moments, especially last Saturday when 200 Bayan protesters took to the streets for their usual anti-American protest. They were led by Bayan secretary general Renato Reyes who obviously had to import protesters from all over the country. He clearly knew that Cebu only has a handful of his kind. When the protesters marched toward the CICC, they were also joined by Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña who wanted to make sure that the protest action didn’t lead to any violence.

Political pundits may accuse Mayor Osmeña of politicking as this is an election year, but this is totally untrue simply because with elections getting so near… our political radar still hasn’t seen any challenger to the mayor’s seat. Kudos to Mayor Osmeña that while the protesters burned the effigy of US President George W. Bush, no violence occurred. Of course, many Cebuanos found this action totally strange in the sense that the US President was thousands of miles away from our shores. But this mass protest showed to the world that democracy thrives here… that freedom of expression has been protected by the mayor of Cebu City.

Thus you can say that the ASEAN Summit had a euphoric end last Monday as the only major summit-related incident was the downing of close to a hundred dancers due to spoiled food. While they were hospitalized, they got out very quickly and were able to perform before the world leaders during their gala night at Shangri-La.

After bidding each leader goodbye by the main door of the CICC (they were each escorted by Ambassador Marciano Paynor, the workhorse behind the success of the ASEAN Summit), I could sense that President Arroyo was in a euphoric mood, like most of us who were in the CICC. During the presscon, the President was asked what was the most important achievement of the ASEAN Summit and she replied, "That so many nations and leaders came together to discuss peace, security, social justice and economic growth was a testament to the desire of leaders and their people for greater collaboration among nations." Most of the questions asked by the international press concerned issues you could find on the front pages of our national newspapers.

I didn’t ask the President any questions, but as she got down from the podium, I greeted her and congratulated her for the successful hosting of the historic ASEAN Summit in Cebu. As for the CICC which she was so proud to see completed, I suggested to the President that Cebu should offer the CICC as the venue for the expected constitutional convention (con-con) and the President gave me a huge smile, which I took as a possibility.

No doubt the location of the CICC in Mandaue City is perfect as Cebu is located in the center of the Philippines and more importantly, the people in the South believe in federalism, the only missing ingredient for a better managed Philippines where the powers of government is shared with the federal states… thus with no power center to grab, we shall see the last of those pesky power-grabbers who want to make a shortcut of our democratic processes.

AboitizLand bares plan for condo, looks to northern Cebu for new site

THE real estate arm of the Aboitiz group is planning to implement a condominium project that will cater to Cebu’s young population.

AboitizLand president and chief operating officer Andoni Aboitiz said the company plans to build several condominiums late this year or early 2008 at its property in Mabolo, Cebu City.

While AboitizLand is yet to determine the size of the project site, Aboitiz said the undertaking will involve the construction of studio-typed condos priced between P1.5 million and P3.5 million.

He said the condo-minium’s ground floor will be allotted for commercial facilities such as restaurants, bars, gym and other amenities that most of today’s youth are enjoying.

“The city will change drastically in the next five years and land is very expensive which will force some people to settle back in the urban area,” he said during the launching of the Molave Highlands Residences in the northern towns of Liloan and Consolacion last Saturday.

Garden village

Molave Highlands Residences is a ready-made garden village with 32 house-and-lot units.

It is described as a “village within a village” covering a total lot area of 180 square meters inside Molave Highlands’ 13-hectare property.

Aboitiz said the Highlands Residences caters to buyers who want a readily available house-and-lot unit while the Molave Highlands are for buyers who intend to purchase only the residential lots.

Molave Highlands, which was introduced in 2001, has only 30 of the 392 total residential lots available for sale, he said.

Aboitiz said since the company has been getting inquiries from potential customers, he expects the house-and-lot units of the Highland Residences to be sold out by the end of the year.

House-and-lot units at the Swiss-inspired village are priced at an average of P3 million each. There are three architectural designs to choose from, namely Monterosa, Bernina and Chasseral.

All three designs have landscaped lawns, two bedrooms, a den, living room, dining room, kitchen, porch and service sink.

Molave village, on the other hand, has several amenities that include picnic grounds, swimming pool, jogging paths and trekking trails.

Aboitiz said AboitizLand is also looking for areas in northern Cebu for another residential development.

To foster neighborly relations among residents, Aboitizland’s property management division will help homeowners form an association that will manage the village.

“Residents in the Highlands Residences are full members of the association,” Aboitiz said.

ASEAN spouses want to make private visit to Cebu, says First Gentleman

CEBU CITY, Jan. 17 (PNA) – A rolling tour of Cebu City’s historic landmarks for spouses of heads of state who attended the just-concluded 12th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit and related summits left an impression on them that they plan private visits to Cebu.

First Gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo, who headed the program for the spouses, on Monday commended and thanked the local organizers of the two-day activities for the spouses of the East Asian leaders for pulling off an “impressive” program.

In a statement, he said the rolling tour gave the spouses an impression that Cebu was a nice place and its people were “full of smiles.”

”The committee worked hard. They left no stone unturned. Their hard work paid off. I am so happy and proud of the spouses organizing committee,” said Mr. Arroyo.

He spoke highly of the staging of the Battle of Mactan in Lapu-Lapu City on Saturday and a rolling tour of Cebu City’s historical landmarks on Sunday.

The First Gentleman attributed the success of the project “to the excellent job done by the group and the full support of the Cebuanos."

The Cebu sub-committee on spouses program was chaired by Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Ambassador Francisco Benedicto and co-chaired by Margot Osmeña, wife of Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña.

The other committee members were Linda Ouano, wife of Mandaue Ccity Mayor Thadeo Ouano; Paz Radaza, wife of Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Arturo Radaza and Tina Sitoy, wife of Cordova Municipal Mayor Arleigh Sitoy.

Mr. Arroyo said the ASEAN leaders’ spouses were “deeply impressed” and overjoyed by the various performances and other activities undertaken by the committee.

The performances of the homegrown talents, he added, were “so excellent and superb.”

”The spouses enjoyed a lot. They found the city bus tour very unique. They learned and understood our culture,” he said.

”They found the Filipinos to be so friendly and loving,” the First Gentleman added.

.. "naikog" - Cebuanos usually use this word if someone is asking for a favor.....for example, if you are asking a person a certain favor and he gladly do it for you, the person who asked the favor will say, "maikog man sab ko nimo, okay lang?" ...this is Cebuano way of showing to the person that you're not abusing his being kind to you...or sa tagalog pa...just like saying: "nakakahiya na man sa 'yo"...something to that effect... ("naikog" is past tense na siya)

Ang pasabot sa 'naikog' kay na-ulaw. This usually refers to feeling uncomfortable of: 1) using someone else' things/belongings/place; or 2) asking for someone's help. It's actually an act of courtesy by the one asking the favor.

Governor to offer thanks by dancing

STARTING today, Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia will start practicing for this Sunday’s Sinulog, where she will join the street parade.

She defied warnings on security, saying she wants to dance in thanksgiving for the completion of the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC) and the peaceful hosting of the 12th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) summit.

It was her prayer when she danced in the Sinulog grand mardi gras last year, she said.

After sending off the last of the heads of state yesterday morning, Garcia flew by helicopter to Sta. Fe, Bantayan Island to join their celebration of the fiesta of Sto. Niño.

She flew back to the mainland in the afternoon to attend the thanksgiving mass at the CICC that was officiated by Cebu Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal.

“Every nook and cranny of the CICC holds memories of our struggle,” she said.

Before he left Cebu, Laos Prime Minister Bouasone Bouphavanh told Garcia yesterday at the airport that he was awed by the Cebuanos, who smiled despite walking under the heat because of the traffic the summit brought.

Like Thailand Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont, he vowed to come back.

“For him, everything was perfect. He said President Arroyo made the right decision in choosing Cebu,” Garcia quoted the Laos prime minister as saying.

Last year’s Sinulog festival was the first time a governor joined the festivities by dancing in the parade. This Sunday, she will be wearing a Muslim-inspired costume and dance from the opening ceremony, the Sinulog route, and then back to the Cebu City Sports Center to cap the parade.

All Capitol department heads will be with Garcia, who will be dancing with Daanbantayan’s Haladaya Festival dancers. “It will be more meaningful because I will be dancing with one of the many festivals in the province,” she said. (JPM)

Jinggoy wants UN to reject appointment of Davide

Opposition stalwart Sen. Jinggoy Ejercito Estrada Monday disclosed that he will send a letter to the United Nations in New York asking that the world body to reject the 'illegal' appointment of former Supreme Court Chief Justice Hilario Davide as the Philippines’ Permanent Representative to the UN.

The son of former president Joseph Estrada said Davide has not not yet been confirmed by the Commission of Appointments (CA).

Estrada, a CA member, said the oath-taking of Davide which was done by Mrs. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on the sidelines of the 12th Southeast Asian Nations Summit in Cebu last Sunday, disregarded Congress and the rule of law.

“The UN cannot accept an illegitimate ambassador that was not yet been confirmed by the Philippine Congress,” Estrada said.

The Commission on Appointments bypassed Davide’s appointment when the former Chief Justice first appeared before the commission last December.

Davide was intensely grilled by Estrada who asked him to explain his role in swearing of Mrs. Arroyo into the presidency in January 2001 following the ouster of then-president Estrada.

The eldest son of former President Estrada and Sen. Luisa “Loi” Ejercito Estrada said the country’s reputation in the international community will be put in question because of the illegal assumption of the UN post by Davide.

“Mrs. Arroyo had again committed a diplomatic blunder by insisting that Davide assume his post in New York even without the require CA confirmation,” the young Estrada said, adding:

“An ambassador cannot assume any diplomatic post without going through the legal process, and Davide who is a former Chief Justice should know what is legal and what is not.”

Cebu Football Association bares plan to host another youth tournament

FOOTBALL in Cebu is expected to go a notch higher this year as the Cebu Football Association (CebuFA) is negotiating to hold another youth-based tournament.

CebuFA president Jonathan Maximo is negotiating with a multinational firm to hold a tournament in Cebu later this year for a still to be determined age group.

“We are trying to squeeze it before summer starts,” said Maximo.

Maximo is eyeing to start the first phase in Cebu with the next phase involving the other football hotbeds in the Visayas. The different champions will then play each other in the regional level.

“We are still negotiating but they are open to the idea,” said Maximo.

Youth football in the country got a huge blow after long-time partner Coca Cola stopped its successful Coke-Go-For-Goal Under-16 program.

That program also helped discover new talents for the national team, which is on one of its strongest showings in recent years.

The Philippines won three of four matches in the Asean Football Federation qualifiers last year, but met mixed-fortunes in this year’s Championships round. (ML)

The Asean Summit in Cebu, The Manila Times by: Edgardo B. Espiritu...

THE Philippines just successfully hosted the 12th Asean Summit in Cebu. I am speculating that the choice of Cebu as the venue for the summit on the part of the Philippine government as host was likely to have been prompted by the desire to promote the country’s “Queen City of the South” internationally (although many Cebuanos now dislike such references as these since they say that their city is neither a queen to any king nor a second to any premier city). But holding the summit in Cebu may have also been appropriate given the significant parallelisms between Asean and Cebu. The latter is definitely a growth hub today, a rising counterpoint to Manila as the traditional center of economic activity in the country, just as Asean and its close allies in East and South Asia are emerging as a strong counterpoint to the older advanced economies of the West.

New watershed

The Asean Summit in Cebu may be considered as marking a new watershed in the history of this successful and increasingly influential regional bloc. First, it was in this summit that the blue print was first set for the formulation of a formal charter for the regional grouping. So far, Asean has been what may be called a “pragmatic” or “activity-based” rather than a “rule-based” regional integration initiative. It is more focused on shared activities that bring the countries closer, rather than on formal rules. The fundamental basis of its existence is only a declaration by the member states rather than a treaty. This is in contrast with the European Union, which was brought forth by the Treaty of Maastrich and, before that, by the Treaty of Rome of 1957, which created the European Economic Community. Although Asean’s system has worked well even without a formal charter, the Asean leaders now recognize that such a charter is important to be able to more effectively manage the key challenges of regional integration, globalization, economic growth, and new technologies. They therefore endorsed the Blueprint of the Asean Charter prepared by a group of eminent persons earlier created for the purpose and directed a high level task force to complete the drafting of the Asean Charter in time for the 13th Summit in Singapore in 2007.

Biggest free-trade area

Second, it was also in the Cebu Summit that the Asean leaders signed an agreement with China that will bring the parties closer to the creation of the biggest free-trade area in the world—a market of 1.8 billion people, with a total estimated economic activity of about $2 trillion. Plans for the FTA started in 2002 and is getting closer and closer to realization. Tariffs for more than 7,000 items traded between Asean and China had been lowered and Asean trade between the two parties has reached $160 billion in 2006, posting growth of 23 percent from the previous year.

Third, the Asean leaders committed to accelerate the establishment of the Asean Economic Community by 2015, five years ahead of the timeframe envisioned in the Asean Vision 2020 and the Asean Concord II and agreed to sign the Cebu Declaration on the Establishment of the Asean Community by 2015. This move to advance the creation of the single economic bloc shows increased confidence among the Asean members backed by solid past and present successes, such as the accelerated implementation of the Asean Free-Trade Agreement (AFTA), and the setting up of the Asian Bond Market Initiative under the Asean + 3 (China, Japan, South Korea) framework, which is built on the idea of having a regional fund to provide finance to countries in the region that are undergoing liquidity problems and perhaps, eventually, those that need development finance.

Energy security

Fourth, under the East Asian Summit, an extension of the Asean framework, the leaders signed the Cebu Declaration on East Asian Energy Security, which would lead to the development of a common regional policy for energy issues, including the development and use of alternative and renewable forms of energy, promotion of energy efficiency and resource and infrastructure development through greater private sector involvement. This addresses the difficult global energy situations and will help promote the development and trading of less conventional and renewable energy forms, including biofuels.

The Cebu Summit was thus a very fruitful and meaningful event in the increasingly crucial sphere of regional cooperation and integration. The Asean countries were among the first to realize that it is only by working together they can solve complex regional and global issues and speed up the process of sustained and inclusive development. With closer integration and more joint efforts the Asean countries and their partners and allies in the region can accelerate the realization of the “Asian Century,” and the Cebu Summit was an important step toward that goal.

Yup. A concerned citizen reported to Mr. Leo Lastimosa that only 6 lampposts were lighting up at night so Mr. Leo asked Mr. Nagiel Banacia, a member of the SRP Committee regarding this. Now, yeah, it looks so good. The viaduct to Cebu City hasn't been lighted still though. But hey, that's a good start.

^^ me too.. it'd be so cool driving there at night., my gas, i really can't wait. :D

My family visited the site last night. It was very beautiful. The tall and slanted post of cebu city looks very beautiful when lighted and they are very bright too.

However, there are many lamps in the main road that have become busted, but as I recall, it is beyond the scope of cebu city as DPWH owns these.

Furthermore, the relighting of the viaduct would cost several more millions of pesos from the city coffers since the power lines of these lamps have been stolen for scrap.

I just can't wait till they fix this, and they also complete the mini Hollywood style signage of "South Road Properties" at the end of the viaduct.

Its just so sad that some people would destroy such a beautiful project.

And FYI, AFAIK Coastal road is open 24 hours already, but the parks in Kawit point are still under construction, and thus, no loitering.

If negotiations push through, at least three big companies will pour investments into the 295-hectare Cebu South Road Properties (SRP), formerly the South Reclamation Project.

In a press conference yesterday, Mayor Tomas Osmeña said Philinvest, Shoemart and Bigfoot have expressed interest in purchasing portions of the SRP, expecting that this would generate more employment in the city.

Bigfoot, a US-based information technology business solutions firm with interests in communications, business process outsourcing, education and entertainment, is interested to purchase 16 hectares of lot at the SRP. It already submitted a written proposal over its intention.

According to Osmeña, the "Queen City of the South" may also become the "Hollywood of Asia" as Bigfoot is considering locating its film studio to the SRP.

The mayor said Bigfoot officials have been talking with longtime Cebu resident Mike Gleissner, chairman of the board of Bigfoot Group of Companies, on their SRP interest. The company will also put up a port at the SRP for its mega yacht club, Osmeña said.

SM also considered purchasing 30 to 50 hectares of SRP lot in cash as soon as the negotiation will push through. Contrary to what he previously said that he does not want to establish a mall at the SRP, the mayor said he now considers the development of an SM mall in the area because it could generate employment.

Osmeña also said the Philinvest will purchase a 30-hectare lot at the SRP and that it is interested to open a restaurant on Kawit Island. The city government has been putting up a man-made white sand beach in Pond F near Kawit.

But the mayor said he wanted to remain selective of the investments that would be poured into his centerpiece project. Top priority would be companies that would generate more employment.

As they have been getting investment proposals, Osmeña said the city would be finalizing everything since they will look into the technicality and legality of dividing the land title for the SRP.

Osmeña, however, said there is still no specific amount for the purchase of the SRP lots. - Garry B. Lao

JAKARTA -- An official accompanying Indonesia's president to the ASEAN summit in the Philippines allegedly tried to get hotel managers to mark up their expenses and split the profits, a report said Wednesday.

The state secretariat staffer allegedly approached the management of the upmarket hotel where the Indonesian delegation was staying in Cebu, and asked them to increase the charges for the presidential party in return for a share of the balance, The Jakarta Post said, quoting hotel sources.

After a first offer was rejected, the member of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's delegation increased it to 40 percent of the margin but this was also rejected, the daily said.

"I know nothing about this," presidential spokesman Andi Mallarangeng told Agence France-Presse.

He only said that all delegations to the summit, including the Indonesians, stayed at the same hotel.

Theo Sambuaga, who heads the parliamentary commission on defense, foreign affairs and information, said the report needed to be thoroughly investigated to prevent further tarnishing of the country's image.

"I will ask the government to thoroughly investigate this report and if it turns out true, to take firm action against those guilty so that no such shameful incident would repeat itself in the future," Sambuaga told AFP.

Indonesia has an endemic corruption problem and tied with Zimbabwe as the 130th most corrupt nation out of 163 countries in the 2006 global rankings issued by the anti-corruption watchdog Transparency International.

The country was ranked 137 out of 158 nations in the previous year's report.

Parklane to focus on Asian tourists, business travelers

HOPING to lure more guests this year, a Cebuano-owned four-star hotel decided to focus marketing on Asian tourists.

“Taking cue from the recent Asean (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) summit, we are looking at attracting Koreans, Chinese and Japanese tourists,” said Rey Fuentes, Cebu Parklane International Hotel general manager.

Fuentes said Cebu is experiencing a “market curiosity,” especially from Asean countries, following the success of the 12th Asean summit, which received good reviews from summit delegates.

While Parklane continues to position itself as a business hotel, Fuentes said the hotel expects to lure foreign tourists, particularly those from Asian countries, who come to Cebu not just for its world-class beaches and resorts.

“These are tourists who visit Cebu for heritage tours, sight-seeing and those interested in the Cebuano culture,” he told Sun.Star Cebu.

“The way to boost our tourism industry is not only through market penetration but market expansion,” he added.

In line with this thrust, Fuentes said the hotel management is working with the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry for brand development and market expansion.

“Parklane is a true Cebuano hotel. We train our staff to greet visitors in the local dialect,” he said.

During the Asean Business and Investment summit last December, Parklane allocated 170 rooms for foreign media delegates from Korea and Australia.

For the 12th Asean summit, Korean and Australian crew and embassy staff occupied 50 percent of the hotel’s 230 rooms.

According to Fuentes, when the December summit was moved to January, the hotel’s occupancy rate did not suffer as corporate bookings were already lined up to compensate for the vacancy.

Majority of the bookings were Metro Manila companies, he said.

Fuentes said the hotel did not host any Asean foreign minister because the hotel was still not in full operation when the summit was announced to take place in Cebu.

He said even the hotel’s 300-square meter presidential suite is still under construction.

Nevertheless, Fuentes said the hotel’s occupancy rate reached 85 percent since it its soft opening in July 2006.

He said Parklane is targeting a “conservative” 65 percent average occupancy rate this year.

Cebu Parklane is owned by Cebuano company Five Power Venture Development Corp. of Manuel Ting and family. It is located at the corner of Archbishop Reyes Ave. and Escario St., across Ayala Center Cebu.

SM is not just about malls. Like Ayala, they also build highrise condos, leisure resorts, etc. If I were to pick, highrise condo nalang sana :D

3 Big companies investing in SRP

If negotiations push through, at least three big companies will pour investments into the 295-hectare Cebu South Road Properties (SRP), formerly the South Reclamation Project.

In a press conference yesterday, Mayor Tomas Osmeña said Filinvest, Shoemart and Bigfoot have expressed interest in purchasing portions of the SRP, expecting that this would generate more employment in the city.

Bigfoot, a US-based information technology business solutions firm with interests in communications, business process outsourcing, education and entertainment, is interested to purchase 16 hectares of lot at the SRP. It already submitted a written proposal over its intention.

According to Osmeña, the "Queen City of the South" may also become the "Hollywood of Asia" as Bigfoot is considering locating its film studio to the SRP.

The mayor said Bigfoot officials have been talking with longtime Cebu resident Mike Gleissner, chairman of the board of Bigfoot Group of Companies, on their SRP interest. The company will also put up a port at the SRP for its mega yacht club, Osmeña said.

SM also considered purchasing 30 to 50 hectares of SRP lot in cash as soon as the negotiation will push through. Contrary to what he previously said that he does not want to establish a mall at the SRP, the mayor said he now considers the development of an SM mall in the area because it could generate employment.

Osmeña also said the Philinvest will purchase a 30-hectare lot at the SRP and that it is interested to open a restaurant on Kawit Island. The city government has been putting up a man-made white sand beach in Pond F near Kawit.

But the mayor said he wanted to remain selective of the investments that would be poured into his centerpiece project. Top priority would be companies that would generate more employment.

As they have been getting investment proposals, Osmeña said the city would be finalizing everything since they will look into the technicality and legality of dividing the land title for the SRP.

Osmeña, however, said there is still no specific amount for the purchase of the SRP lots. - Garry B.

@ jhaelnis, oks ra na, with i think almost 70 to 80+ intersections using SENSORIZED traffic system, and yeah the version 5, not the version 3 that theyre using in the capital, some will always bug down, mas maayo gani na kay functioning almost tanan, especially critical areas. huna-hunaa lang ug gipang taod na sila tanan tapos mahibaw an na lang nato na dili diay mu andar kay sige rag blink blink tanan, hahay....at least most of them here are functioning, and yeah, to add to that, may cameras pa ang uban ani nila, using satellite transmission to feed the images to a central command. matod pang slerz, PAKSIT gyud!

Property developer Cebu Holdings Inc. said on Thursday its net profit in 2006 rose 76 percent from a year earlier.

An magnitude 4.8 earthquake rocked parts of Northern Mindanao and Cebu Thursday, ABS-CBN Regional Network Group reported.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said the Northern Mindanao tremor struck at 1:40 p.m., with the epicenter located at 72 kilometers northeast of Tandag, Surigao del Sur. It had a depth of 57 kilometers below the surface.

The US Geological Survey, meanwhile, measured the earthquake's magnitude at 5.2.

PHIVOLCS said intensity 4 ground movement was recorded in Socorro, Surigao del Norte and intensity 3 in the Tandag-Carascal area and the cities of Surigao and Butuan in Surigao del Sur. Intensity 2 ground movement was reported in the cities of Cagayan de Oro and Cebu.

A minor aftershock was also felt in Northern Mindanao, the agency added.

On Thursday morning, a 3.5-magnitute earthquake rocked the province of Leyte.

The quake, which was tectonic in origin, struck at 6:44 a.m.

FOUR big companies are interested to buy at least 30-hectare-lots and put up their businesses in the South Road Properties (SRP) in Cebu City.

Mayor Tomas Osmeña said yesterday he has been negotiating with the owners of Big Foot Entertainment and was starting talks with owners of SM, Alta-Vista and Filinvest.

Big Foot has invested P9 million in Mactan where a movie studio and film school was built.

SM is owned by the Henry Sy, who is one of the richest Filipinos in 2006.

AltaVista and Filinvest are big real estate firms.

The mayor is aiming for a new upscale image for Cebu City.

Big Foot wants to buy a 60-hectare lot beside the sea near the Kawit Island.

The company plans to construct a mega-studio and a yacht club, which would cater to wealthy yacht owners from Hong Kong and Singapore.

Part of his plan, Osmeña said, is to put up a refueling station in between the Philippines and Singapore so that the rich families from Singapore and Hong Kong could refuel their yachts while on their halfway trip to Cebu.

“Daghan mga datu sa Singapore ug Hong Kong nga daghan kaayog mga yacht that cost 10 to 50 million dollars apan wala silay adtuon. So, we will organize trips to come and visit the Philippines and visit the Visayas,” Osmeña said.

The Sys, SM's owners, will be in Cebu this week to discuss the plan to invest in the SRP with city officials.

Osmeña said SM is planning to construct the Mall of Asia, (???) which would include an entertainment center, high rise buildings and a shopping mall.

Osmeña didn’t give details on the plans of other investors to buy lots in the SRP but he said that the lots would be bidded out.

But he said he had given priority to the investors who would not only buy lots in the SRP but also bring economic activity in the area.

“I think, the people are beginning to realize that the SRP is a good investment. Pero, di ta gusto nianang bisan kinsa lang mopalit unya junk yard lang (but I don't like the idea of letting anybody to buy lots in the SRP especially those who only plans make the lot a junk yard),” Osmeña said.

Mayor Osmeña's interest in constructing the Department of Tourism building in Kawit Island has waned with the strong interest that several investors has shown in the SRP.

He said constructing the DOT building would no longer be his priority since the government had not made the project a priority even if there was a financier, who was willing to fund the project.

“We just finish the development of SRP. When they (DOT) already want to put up their office sa dump site nalang,” Osmeña said.

Juanito King & Sons, Inc. (JKSI) is the consolidation of the real estate holdings of the King family, headed by the company founder, Mr. Juanito I. King. Its humble beginnings date back to the late 1950’s, when Mr. King slowly started to acquire real estate through earnings from profitable business ventures.

Led by Juanito King’s granddaughter, May King, the housing project targets to have the following beneficiaries of the planned 169 housing units: staff and employees of JKSI’s sister and subsidiary companies (King’s Quality Foods, Inc., Nito’s International Ventures, Inc., Nito’s Auto Supply, SkyGo Marketing Corp.), as well as other middle-income families.

Mr. Juanito I. King, founder, Chairman and President, envisions JKSI to contribute significantly to the real estate industry through more development projects in the future.

Four mega-firms plan to buy SRP lots–mayor

FOUR big companies are interested to buy at least 30-hectare-lots and put up their businesses in the South Road Properties (SRP) in Cebu City.

Mayor Tomas Osmeña said yesterday he has been negotiating with the owners of Big Foot Entertainment and was starting talks with owners of SM, Alta-Vista and Filinvest.

Big Foot has invested P9 million in Mactan where a movie studio and film school was built.

SM is owned by the Henry Sy, who is one of the richest Filipinos in 2006.

AltaVista and Filinvest are big real estate firms.

The mayor is aiming for a new upscale image for Cebu City.

Big Foot wants to buy a 60-hectare lot beside the sea near the Kawit Island.

The company plans to construct a mega-studio and a yacht club, which would cater to wealthy yacht owners from Hong Kong and Singapore.

Part of his plan, Osmeña said, is to put up a refueling station in between the Philippines and Singapore so that the rich families from Singapore and Hong Kong could refuel their yachts while on their halfway trip to Cebu.

“Daghan mga datu sa Singapore ug Hong Kong nga daghan kaayog mga yacht that cost 10 to 50 million dollars apan wala silay adtuon. So, we will organize trips to come and visit the Philippines and visit the Visayas,” Osmeña said.

The Sys, SM's owners, will be in Cebu this week to discuss the plan to invest in the SRP with city officials.

Osmeña said SM is planning to construct the Mall of Asia, (???) which would include an entertainment center, high rise buildings and a shopping mall.

Osmeña didn’t give details on the plans of other investors to buy lots in the SRP but he said that the lots would be bidded out.

But he said he had given priority to the investors who would not only buy lots in the SRP but also bring economic activity in the area.

“I think, the people are beginning to realize that the SRP is a good investment. Pero, di ta gusto nianang bisan kinsa lang mopalit unya junk yard lang (but I don't like the idea of letting anybody to buy lots in the SRP especially those who only plans make the lot a junk yard),” Osmeña said.

Mayor Osmeña's interest in constructing the Department of Tourism building in Kawit Island has waned with the strong interest that several investors has shown in the SRP.

He said constructing the DOT building would no longer be his priority since the government had not made the project a priority even if there was a financier, who was willing to fund the project.

“We just finish the development of SRP. When they (DOT) already want to put up their office sa dump site nalang,” Osmeña said.

Tourism industry gears up for opportunities in '07

2006 was a good year for Philippine tourism. The industry’s upbeat performance since 2004 has emphasized the immediate need to improve travel into and around the country by providing and upgrading infrastructure, facilities, and services in the main tourism hubs as well as increase the number of rooms and air seats.

Department of Tourism (DoT) Secretary Joseph H. Durano said, "The present situation presents a fertile environment for growth. Prior to 2004, the erratic industry performance slowed down investments. As it recovered, and with the consistent growth in tourist volume and the pressure placed on capacities, the business sector is moving swiftly to take advantage of the upward swing. Indicators have been stable and results have been favorable to support their investments.’’

The Philippine Travel Agencies Association (PTAA) has likewise aired the same observations to achieve higher visitor targets and attract more investments.

"The accommodation sector is now expanding. We are reaping the fruits of our collaborative marketing efforts with the increase in visitor demand, urging the hotels and resorts to fasttrack expansion programs while fresh investments continue to pour in to build new ones,’’ Durano added.

Based on records gathered by the DoT, Boracay will have some 1,500 new rooms; Cebu City and Mactan Island, on the other hand, will have 1,350; while Palawan will beef up its rooms by 500.

Future hotel developments include the 616-room Imperial Palace Waterpark Resort and Spa, a Korean-Filipino venture which broke ground in July 2006 in Maribago, Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu. This will complement the existing properties in the province which seek to benefit from the operations of the newly-constructed Cebu International Convention Center, site of the just-concluded ASEAN Summit.

Malongs and colourfully-decorated umbrellas hung as decorations as over 500 children welcomed the special guests.

While Singh and other leaders were engaged in hectic deliberations, his wife Gursharan Kaur had a busy schedule. She joined wives of other dignitaries in unveiling a bronze sculpture called 'Asean Grove' at the garden.

The artwork of Cebuano sculptors Raymond Fernandez and his wife Estellaa features 17 bamboo nodes rising to the sky from a disc of tile mosaic. Ten tall poles represent the 10 Asean member nations-- Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

China, Japan, South Korea, India, Australia and New Zealand represent Asean's dialogue partners.

The VVIP spouses were also treated to vintage American era with popular folk dances and 1950 rock and roll music.

About 300 dancers did the jive as a band performed the 1957 Elvis Presley classic hit 'Jailaahouse rock'. Cebu's identity as an island of festivals was showcased by 3,500 Sinolug dancers.

Cebu Re-Asserts Fame as Top Island Destination

Following success of sustained promotional campaigns and vigorous marketing scheme, Philippines' oldest city — Cebu — reclaims its reputation as one of the nation's top tourism resource drawing the largest slice of local and international tourists in 2006.

The island is now officially the most sought-after destination in the entire archipelago cornering about 80 percent of foreign visitors and two-thirds of domestic visitors, the Philippine Department of Tourism (DOT) confirmed.

Lured by white sandy beaches, expansive diving spots, world-class amenities— complemented by rich history and colorful traditions, Cebu drew a total of 1.3 million guests during the last 10 months of 2006, up 19 percent over the same period earlier, latest statistics released by the DOT shows.

Koreans, meanwhile, have solidified their footing as the most visible guests in the Island Paradise. They dominate foreign arrival figures of 141, 693 during the same period.

DOT Secretary Joseph Durano, who consistently brings delegates to the annual Road Show in Seoul, Busan, and other major cities in Korea, anticipates that Koreans will continue to arrive in the bustling island, as well as other destinations in the archipelago of 1,700 islands ...

Bohol Province in the Visayan Region, east of Cebu, has been drawn on the world map as top diving spot as well. The province ranked second in the number of tourist arrivals with over 182,000, followed by the provinces of Negros Oriental (over 129,000 tourists), and Siquijor (over 9,000 tourists).

Cebu is also set to transform itself as an investment and a business convention capital of the nation. The recent ASEAN Summit it hosted on Jan. 10- 15 is an indication that the city is firm in its resolve towards this direction ...

Local government invested $151 million in building the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC) on a 3.8 hectares in Mandaue City reclamation area.

The CICC is one of the venues of the 12th ASEAN Summit, which gathers together the heads of states of the 10-member ASEAN and its six dialog partners, including China, Japan, India, Australia, South Korea, and New Zealand.

Local government expects to bring in P1.2 billion in economic benefits in the form of infrastructure and tourism related events for hosting the summit.

The local mining industry is showing signs of bullishness with the entry of foreign investors, an official of a local mining firm said.

Peter Yu, Cebu Ore Mining and Mineral Resources Corp. (COMMRC) director, said mining firms in Korea, China, India, Ukraine and a local mining operator have expressed intentions of inking a deal with COMMRC either for a direct mineral purchase, joint venture, royalty operating agreement or further financing of an existing project.

"The country is blessed with rich mineral reserves like iron, copper and gold. This is why, we are an attractive destination among highly industrialized nations in Asia," Yu told reporters.

He said when COMMRC started iron and gold explorations on a 15,390-hectare company-owned property in Zamboanga and in Sibugay province in Mindanao, inquiries from foreign and local investors started pouring in.

The exploration project covers four iron projects in the towns of Bayog, Buug, Sominot and Midsalip, Zamboanga.

He said COMMRC is waiting for the Department of Environment and Natural Resources' approval of its application for a mineral production sharing agreement for the Zamboanga project.

The exploration phase of the undertaking has been completed, he added.

During exploration activities, an estimated 1.1 million metric tons of iron ore was discovered said Edgar Hao, COMMRC director for technical services.

The quality of the ore consists of 64.4 to 69.29 percent iron; 0.012 to 0.035 percent phosphorous; 0.14 to 1.07 percent moisture; 1.2 to 3.9 percent silicon; 0.008 to 0.44 percent sulfur; and 0.59 to 0.89 percent aluminum.

Yu said that based on a 1.5-kilometer "continuous vein" survey by geologists, about 130 million metric tons of iron ore are yet to be uncovered.

The survey already covers 3.5 kilometers, he said.

Because of the large area, Yu said, negotiations between COMMRC and Falcon Ridge Resources and Management Corp., a mining company in Zamboanga, are in full swing, either for a possible partnership or royalty operating agreement for large-scale mining of high-grade iron and gold.

Yu said a South Korean investor also plans to pour about P50 million on the project, although negotiations are to be finalized on Feb. 8 yet.

Yu said an Indian investor, who has heard of the Zamboanga project, also plans to partner with COMMRC.

This, after an Indian company bared plans to set up a blast furnace plant in the Philippines, which will pre-process iron ore.

Yu said a Ukrainian billionaire is also expected to visit the mining site on Jan. 22.

"Inquiries from these investors are a sign that the Philippines is indeed rich in untapped mineral resources," Yu said.

China-based Share Blossoms Inc., in a joint venture with COMMRC, bared plans to mine copper and gold deposits in Minglanilla town, Talisay City and in Barangays Talamban, Mabini and Kalunasan in Cebu City.

Incorporated in 2003, COMMRC is engaged in resource development projects nationwide. (PNA)
