Thanks for the photos. The Janshatabdi picture is good one.
Does Kulithalai bye pass go all the way to Pettavaithalai ? Is there a bye pass from Pettavaithalai to Trichy?

Bless January 18th, 2010, 07:14 AM Boss why don't these people to stick to lanes in Highway atleast. i can understand the problem in cities
Short answer.
Misinterpretation of speed limit.
Medium Answer.
If speed limit is 60kmph we are assuming allowed speed is 0kmph to 60kmph. (or assuming that we can come in the opposite direction.) But what we understood is speed range not speed limit. Remember this limit is what we use in mathematics/calculus ie if its said 80kmph you must go only at this speed no more no less.
Long Answer.
We don't follow speed limit for each lanes When XYZ comes at 100kmph and see an auto which could barely go beyond 50 kmph in front of it, XYZ don't have option other than slow down or swift to next lane. if next lane is occupied, then he will go in the middle since XYZ is not interested in slowing down.
Vehicles parked in the shoulders, but slightly projecting its body to left lane. hence the vehicle coming on the left had to go slightly right.
if we enforce the speed limit it will make sure that people can not over take and follow one after the other. Also directly ensures that vehicle cannot be parked or moving at the zero speed. Also from driving perceptive, there will not be a need to overtake.
But the problem is the encountering slow moving/stopped vehicle, stupid bicyclist coming in the opposite side in the fast lane. (He might claim that speed is a scalar :P) some one crossing the roads etc.
Just My thought, I don't know whether even Traffic police know about this.

previous national highways minister was from chennai and inspite of that all national highways around chennai are very congested.
Arul Murugan January 18th, 2010, 11:31 AM ^^
Completely agree. Traveling from Vellore to Chennai and Tindivanam-Chennai looks like traveling in city traffic on peak days and peak hours. Badly these roads need alternative expressway.
6 lane of the exiting 4 lane(NH4, NH45) will congest the NHs by 2015 for sure. Poor planning by NHAI
Kathir January 18th, 2010, 06:44 PM ^^
6 laning of NH 46 (from Krishnagiri to Walaja ) and 6/8 laning of NH 4 (from Walaja to Maduravoyal) is about to begin with the contracts to be awarded soon.. < Reference NHAI site.>

dr_thapalathy January 20th, 2010, 02:06 AM Any idea of when the express way b/w Chennai-Kanyakumari will be thought of completion? It is worthless. The 6 laning of the Chennai - VIllupuram is worth and a must do project.

Amazing Video from you.... I guess it is from Trichy - Madurai. When was it taken ? Coz I did this stretch in Dec 2009 and I felt it was completed a little more....
Guyz from Madurai, do anyone of you have any idea about the Madurai By-pass road expansion since there is 1 stretch of nearly 10 Kms in the bypass where it is still the old 2 lanes and lots of speedbreakers and waiting in the toll gates. It is very annoying after a smooth drive.
Cheers!

i was able to reach chennai from trichy in 4 and half hrs.
Palpannai near trichy , we took nearly 15-20 minutes to cross less than 2 kms there. and we had to slowdown once we crossed chengalpat

Ya, one can do it as it is made 4 lane completely. Also, Chennai-Villupuram 6 laning is under consideration. I think it is under construction and it ll be in full pace after all the NH projects in TN are over.

Last week I travelled from Trivandrum to Chennai in SRM Multi Axle volvo. It departs Nagercoil at 9.30 pm. Believe me the bus reached tambaram at 6.05 A.M. It covered Trichy to Tambaram in 3 hrs 45 Mins.:nuts:
nagamoney February 16th, 2010, 03:43 AM Before SRM took the initiative, state buses including some omini buses took boring 16 hours but now the scenerio is changed, Rathi Meena too getting into the race, and they reach destination ahead of time scheduled, thanks to the NHAI
nagamoney February 16th, 2010, 03:54 AM Initiated by these news, I am too tempted to travel in my old Tata indica car, armed with camera to shoot for you people beseeched to see themselves. and hence time taken for travel may go up for halting and catching the sight. may we meet after 23rd.
ChennaiIndian February 20th, 2010, 06:02 AM These guys are driving crazy. I am glad to see Indian roads in this condition but I still feel this is dangerous
Many of our forumers mentioned that Chennai-Trichy could be done in under 4 hours...these videos will give you an idea of what that could be!

ceeznic pirate February 20th, 2010, 09:32 AM Agian yesterday i travelled from trivandrum to villupuram in the same SRM Multi Axle volvo. This time I noted the timings
Trivandrum - 6.30 p.m.
Nagercoil - 9.00 p.m. (due to heavy traffic and narrow road)
30 mins dinner
Started from Nagercoil at 9.30 p.m
Tirunelveli old bus stand 10.40
Madurai Bye Pass(Toll gate) 12.40
Trichy Junction 2.30
10-15 mins break at samaypuram
Villupuram 4.20 A.M.
Easy to reach Tambaram by 6.
At nagercoil, I asked the driver whether the bus will go inside Villupuram. But he said the bus ll only take the Villupuram bye pass. So I asked him to drop me where the byepass starts(Janakipuram).
When I was about to reach my place, I went near to driver's seat to remind him. I stood near him a few mins holding my breath. The speedometer constantly clocked between 110 and 120kmph. Got down at villupuram byepass at 4.20. Waited another half an hour alone in the cold to get a town bus to reach my home:ohno:.
Though the journey costs 900rs, really worths the comfort and service they provide.

I have been travelling along this stretch for quite long.
1979 to 1984 - REC days and later on work / private visits.
The improvement is breathtaking. The ride is so smooth now.

Short response: Misinterpretation of speed "limit".
Speed limit denotes the maximum legal speed you can drive at. If you drive faster, you can get a speeding ticket.
I do not like slow drivers on fast roads too, but that doesn't change the truth.
In many countries with well developed roads, a minimum speed will be posted or well known along with the speed limit. Until they do that on a given road, you cannot hold someone at fault for doing so.
But driving slowly on the fast lane may be a punishable offence in many jurisdictions.

Looks great improvement in road sector for running time. Car owners and people using travels are really enjoying this speed, similar way I experienced Madurai-Salem 250KM in 3hrs in car, but Trichy-Salem 141KM for 4.3hrs in SETC Ultra Delux bus!
Hope atleast TNSTC buses goes with better speed.
ajithv March 9th, 2010, 05:38 AM ^^The running time of TNSTC still remains the same.
Madurai-Salem is 7.5hrs and Madurai-Nagercoil is 6hrs;still remains same evenafter 4 laning.:ohno:
Of course, you can cover Madurai-Salem in 3 hrs by car.:)
gvijayan March 9th, 2010, 07:07 AM ^^ Why can't they revise the running time on the sectors that have been developed to 4-lanes? As usual the dumb TNSTC officials are without brains and they will not think anything out of the box.
gvijayan March 9th, 2010, 07:09 AM ^^ And I don't think TNSTC's take 7+ hours to cover Salem - Madurai. I believe they do it in around 5.5 hours.

From My understanding of what my USA driving instructor told me, I don't think so. At least in US, if there was no one in front of you and you are not waiting for signal or emergency services you must drive at the specified limit.
I remember he pushed me, to approach (the mathematical term limit most times comes with approaching) the specified speed limit, that is on the city roads and I also remember he telling me that "most" of the US free ways (Specially Interstate) are designed such a way that entry to it will long enough to accelerate before merging to the main lane and exits will be long enough to reduce your speed.
PS: I haven't read any doc, if you come across any thing to say I'm wrong please provide. I would be happy to change my understanding. until then I will go with mathematical meaning of limit for speed limit.

When you drive on the US interstate next time, watch for signs that say something like "Speed limit 65" and "Minimum speed 45". There are no minimum speeds on city roads, except that if you obstruct traffic, the police officer can give a ticket at his discretion. I think you might have misinterpreted what your instructor told you. Your state driver handbook say this clearly - you might be able to find a free copy at a public library.
In fact, where I live (in the US as well), it snows a lot in the winter, and you can get a ticket even if you go under the speed limit if the police officer thinks you were going too fast for the road and weather conditions during snowy days.

Glad to be of help. You might even be able to find a PDF version on your state DMV website - it's worth checking. It might help someday to avoid a traffic ticket at the least. In my state, you can get your own take-home copy for free at the DMV offices and at public libraries.

CHENNAI: Over 1,300 km of road development projects in Tamil Nadu, which have to be executed by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), are yet to materialise because of lack of bidders, stringent land acquisition norms and shortage of skilled engineers, according to sources.
“Through out India, many NHAI projects have been hit due to recession. In Tamil Nadu alone, over 13 projects have been stalled due to the non-availability of bidders,” NHAI sources told Express.
“Most of the bids we received were single ones. The ministry is seeking foreign investment in these projects,” the sources said.
As recession shooed away many bidders, development of roads suffered. Although Road and Transport Minister Kamal Nath had made tall claims of building 20 km of roads each day, authorities have been barely able to manage 10 km per day, the source added.
The government’s new norms on land acquisition have also affected the road development. “The new regulation stipulates that the NHAI can go ahead with the bidding only after 80 per cent of the land is acquired. The Surface Transport Ministry is approaching the government to relax rules in this regard,” NHAI sources said.
Besides, the NHAI is also facing shortage of skilled workforce. “We require two lakh qualified civil engineers to complete roads and bridges,” says another source.
On the quality of roads, an NHAI source claimed they were good. He added that the expenditure on constructing the roads had gone up from Rs 6 crore to Rs 10 crore per km. “These roads will not require maintenance for five years,” he added.
The Tambaram-Tindivanam Highway had been leased to the GMR Group and the NHAI was paying Rs 41.8 crore every six months to it for maintenance under its annuity scheme, he added.

I am still bit confused with the funding part of this NHAI four-six laning projects.During the NDA rule , Cess of Rs.1 was levied on the fuel to raise the corpus for building the Golden Quadrilateral. Now u see the toll gates being operated by private operators collecting toll from the users.Does it mean that all the roads are on BOT basis or toll is being shared between the Private plaer and NHAI...people like Ajith who are into the thick of things can explain in detail on the current model of revenue sharing and ownership info....

TIRUCHI: The newly built grade separator (fly-over) at the Palpannai traffic intersection in Ariyamangalam along the Tiruchi-Chennai By-Pass Road was opened for traffic on Wednesday night.
The opening of the fly-over, built as part of the four-lane project on the Tiruchi-Padalur section of the Tiruchi-Chennai National Highway, comes as a huge relief for motorists. The construction work at the crucial intersection has caused enormous traffic problems in the city for more than a year now.
Initially, site clearance and shifting of utilities, such as underground water mains, had slowed down the project. Traffic snarls, often holding up traffic for even up to an hour, had become the order of the day along the By-pass Road and the Tiruchi-Thanjavur Highway owing to the construction work at the site. The National Highways Authority of India had taken up the responsibility of shifting a substantial portion of the underground water mains of the City Corporation at the construction site.
800 metres
The fly-over runs for a length of about 800 metres and has a width of 22 metres apart from a centre median of 1.5 metres.
All fly-overs and bridges have been built to accommodate six-lane traffic, to facilitate further expansion of the highways, as per the instruction given by the former Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways T.R. Baalu.
High mast lights have also been fitted.
Traffic island
A traffic island would be developed beneath the fly-over to regulate the traffic flow. Vehicles proceeding towards the Gandhi Market from the Thanjavur-Tiruchi Highway in the city could proceed beneath the fly-over. Service lanes have been provided on either flanks of fly-over. While the service lanes towards Tiruchi have been already been laid, those towards the Chennai side would be completed within the next four to five days, according to sources in Indu Navayuga Infra Projects, the project concessionaire.
TVS Tollgate Junction
Meanwhile, work is underway in full swing on the other fly-over coming up in the city under the project, at the TVS Tollgate Junction.
The fly-over is expected to be opened for traffic by the first week of April, marking the completion the four-laning on the entire 38.5 km long Tiruchi-Padalur section of the Tiruchi-Chennai National Highway.

Tuticorin: The much awaited road infrastructure development project, which has been undertaken by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) from Tuticorin to Madurai, is expected to be completed by the end of June 2010.
The project is being carried out at an estimated cost of Rs. 629 crore. Not surprisingly, the completion of the 128-km stretch of NH 45 – B between these two districts would augur better prospects making way for comfort journey for the travellers. Since Tuticorin had emerged a trade and business oriented district, commuters usually frequent here from various corners of the state by road.

for perumanallur bypass where does it start and where does it end? Any landmarks or intersections where the bypass starts and ends. Is it going around New Tirupur on the north side?
the NHAI is saying
The distance of existing National Highway -47 in Perumanallur is 4.2k.m.
The distance of the bypass in Perumanallur will be 4.7k.m. Hence, there is no major
difference in the distances. The government also will not approve, if the distance of
bypass is more than the existing National Highway. However, the geomentry of
existing road is not feasible for carrying out any expansion.

krishnancv May 7th, 2010, 02:50 AM The Union Cabinet's Committee on Infrastructure (CCI) on Thursday cleared a proposal to develop a multi-purpose berth at Paradip Port at an estimated cost of Rs.387 crore. The project envisages the construction of facilities for handling containers and ‘clean cargo,' totalling five million tonnes per year, with a view to decongesting the port and reducing the turn-around time for vessels. It is scheduled to be completed within three years.
Chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the panel also gave the green signal for a host of highway development projects, including the six-laning of the Hosur-Krishnagiri section of National Highway 7 at a cost of Rs.535 crore and the two-laning of the Dindigul-Theni section of NH-45 (extension) and the Theni-Kumli section of NH-220 in Tamil Nadu at an estimated cost of Rs.501 crore.
Other highlights of the highway development projects approved are: the four laning of a section of NH-17 from the Karnataka-Kerala border to Kannur at a cost of Rs.1,563 crore; four-laning of the Nagpur-Betul section of NH-89 in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh at a cost of Rs.2,498 crore; rehabilitation and four-laning of the Barhi-Hazaribagh section of NH-33 in Jharkhand at an estimated cost of Rs.414 crore; and the six-laning of the Dhankuni-Kharagpur section of NH-6 in West Bengal at an estimated cost of Rs.1,396 crore.
The panel also gave the nod to the four-laning of a section of NH-6 from the Orissa-Chhattisgarh border to Sambalpur, and the Bhubaneswar-Puri section of NH -203 in Orissa; upgrading to two-lane the Multai-Seoni section of NH -69A and the Narsinghpur-Amrawada-Saoner section of NH -26B in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra; two-laning of the Chapra-Hazipur section of NH -19 in Bihar; and the four-laning of the Jorabat-Barapani section of NH-40 in Assam and Meghalaya.
The panel further approved the updating of the project cost for widening the Nechipu-Hoj stretch and Potin-Pangin stretch under the Trans-Arunachal Highway project to Rs.1,486 crore and Rs.1,985 crore respectively.
The highway project in the border area is designed to improve the internal connectivity of the various districts of Arunachal Pradesh and help security forces combat anti-national activities more effectively.
The Union Cabinet's Committee on Economic Affairs also met on Thursday and gave the go-ahead for the modification of the National Means-cum-Merit Scheme, in order to wind up the corpus of Rs.1,000 crore with the State Bank of India (SBI) and instead make an annual provision in the Budget towards the scholarship amount and reimbursement of the cost of conducting the selection tests.

ajithv May 8th, 2010, 12:15 PM The latest projects under NHAI which are approved by the Cabinet in Tamilnadu.
The Cabinet Committee on Infrastructure today approved the implementation of the project of two laning with paved shoulder of Dindigul-Theni section of NH-45 (Extn.) and Theni-Kumli Section of NH-220 in the State of Tamil Nadu under NHDP Phase III on Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer (DBFOT) Annuity basis.
The total project cost is estimated at Rs.501 crore under the DBFO pattern. The concession period is for 20 years including a construction period of 24 months.
The main object of the project is to expedite the improvement of infrastructure in the State of Tamil Nadu and to increase the capacity of these sections of the National Highways, approved by the Government under the NHDP Phase III. It will reduce the time and cost of travel of the traffic, particularly heavy traffic running between Dindigul to Theni and the traffic running from Theni to Kumli. The project stretch is an important link connecting Tamil Nadu to the sea ports at Cochin.
The Cabinet Committee on Infrastructure today approved the implementation of the project for Six laning of 59.87 Km long Hosur – Krishnagiri section of NH-7 in the State of Tamil Nadu under NHDP Phase V on DBFOT basis.
The total project cost is estimated to Rs.535.00 crore under DBFO pattern. The concessionaire will incur all expenditure to complete the project and will recover the same by user fee for twenty-four years including a construction period of thirty months.
The project will reduce the time and cost of travel for traffic plying between Hosur and Krishnagiri in the State of Tamil Nadu. It will also increase the potential of employment to local labourers for the project activities. Besides it will also add to the transportation facilities for travel to Madurai.

Cross posted from Tirunelveli projects and developments thread.
It is not only connecting Palayamkottai . It is upto south-eastern most Tuckerammalpuram nellai sub urban.
The trucks, containers to Tuticorin port get relief. There is no need to get rush/hurry-burry trouble with Nellai city traffic.
Now the Thalaiyuthu-Tuckerammal puram bye-pass road get ready.
So they can use it.
And we got direct connection between North Nellai sub urban places and Eastern Nellai sub urbans.
There is no need to come to center Nellai(Junction,Palayamkottai,Vannerpet,Murugankurichi,Trivandrum road)
Directly they can use this Thalaiyuthu to Tuckerammal Puram 4 way.
This is the most flexible one for Vehicles towards Tuticorin.

Since Bvn is the connectivity place of NH-47 Erode bypass & Erode-Mettur highway, to avoid the traffic in the place, they planned this byepass...
It will start at Lakshmi nagar, where it splits from NH, then it goes via Kalingarayanpalayam-Elavampalayam-Moolapalayam-Kadayampatti-Kuruppanaickenpalayam and joins again with Mettur Road in the North of Bvn...
In Lakshmi nagar, it gets connecte to Erode Outer Ring Road Project.
So, the vehicles from Erode city can take this Route:
BP Agraharam-Perumal malai-Lakshminagar-Byepass-KN Palayam-Mettur Road..
Vehicles from Perundurai through NH Bypass:

BlackPearl May 10th, 2010, 08:38 PM Thillai, Thanks for putting up the good news of Nellai bypass completion... Long awaited news and finally it is now getting to be ready..... very nice to read it.
Ajith, thanks for the snap... the landscape around the road is great.... it looks very pleasant....
Thillai, this will very well improve the traffic inside the Nellai town eliminating the unwanted truck traffic and needless safety hazard to the local residents.... The State Govt should take steps to create another bypass road on the western side of Nellai and make it as a ring road for Nellai.... or atleast should extend the bypass road from Thalaiyuthu to meet the Tenkasi Road, so that the traffic from Tuty towards Tenkasi / Kutralam / Kerala through Shenkottah Pass would also take the bypass instead gf going through Nellai Town.. Nellai town is very busy during the day and it is high time the Govt acts quickly to get the ring road...
Nonetheless with the opening of bypass in the current state will benefit the 2 major Industrial Parks coming up in Nellai - SIPCOT in Gangaikondan, and the AMRL SEZ in Naguneri... the load movements to Tuty Port wud be fast and smooth... this will attract more investors to these parks...
Personally I was looking forward towards the completion of this bypass for a long long time.. there was no update from anyone on this... and it is a welcome surprise to see this..... this will reduce my usual travel time to Trivandrum Airport from Tuty by a minimum 10 -15 minutes....
Nellai - Tuty 4-Laning contract is awarded to Hyderabad based company and preliminary work has started and it is estimated to be completed by March 2012....
The tender for NH47-B from Kavalkinaru to Nagercoil by-pass and NH-47 from Nagercoil by-pass to TN-KL border is also up for awarding.... so southern TN will see better connectivity in the coming years...
Cheers!
BlackPearl May 10th, 2010, 08:58 PM One place that surely deserves to have a better connectivity is Tiruchendur.... This temple town attracts a lot of pilgrims all around the year...but it does not even have a single NH connectivity... Either the Tuty - Tiruchendur or Nellai - Tiruchendur should be made a NH....
Tuty - Tiruchendur is full of heavy industries (SPIC, TAC, Heavy Water Plant, Zirconium Sponge Plant, DCW and many other small chemical industries) and the fertile region of Thambiraparani criss crosses this road and the traffic during the festival season makes this an ideal choice for upgrading to a NH...
Also there a lot of old churches which too attracts a sizeable number of pilgrims on particular days... Will any political party push this proposal forward..... it is big question ?????
Cheers !

Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced in the Assembly on Monday that since over-speeding was a regular feature on NH 45 and a huge number of accidents were being reported, the government had decided to install speed monitor cameras.
He said the accident rate was very high on the 80-km stretch from Chengalpattu to Tindivanam and the cameras would be installed along it.

Engineering major Larsen & Toubro on Friday said it has bagged an order worth Rs. 1,450 crore from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) for a road project in Tamil Nadu.
L&T Krishnagiri Walajahpet Tollway, a special purpose vehicle incorporated by L&T, has signed an agreement with the NHAI for widening of a stretch of Krishnagiri—Walajahpet Highway in Tamil Nadu, Larsen & Toubro said in a filing to the Bombay Stock Exchange.
The scope of the work includes six-laning of the Golden Quadrilateral on build, operate and transfer basis, the filing added.
The project is slated to be completed within 30 months.

Leo_r May 19th, 2010, 09:09 PM NH - Very good quality roads. Thanks to the Contractor and Quality Inspector. Are you a QI? Keep up the good work.
Your Car will have sigh of relief and say thank you if you drive around 80 KMPH.Why test it's limit? Hava a safe journey.
Arasu May 19th, 2010, 09:37 PM ^^ It may be very risky to drive at such speeds in India where a child or even a cow can just run into you unexpectedly. You will also be contributing to more green house gases as higher speeds consume higher amount of fuel. When it comes to the cars, I think the modern cars can handle such speeds comfortably.
It is difficult to resist the temptation sometimes. I couldn't resist the temptation a couple of years ago when I drove my new Mercedez at speeds around 100 mph (at places away from population -vehicular and otherwise.). I paid for that excess 3 months back when I had an accident while I was driving at only 10 mph speed - in a snowy downhill road and also had two more drivers bump into me.
PS. Real wheel drive cars are useless or even down right dangerous to drive in snowy conditions which I had not thought about much when I bought the car.

Chennai: Reliance Infrastructure Ltd (Rinfra)-led consortium has bagged a 60-km road project connecting Hosur and Krishnagiri. The project, which was cleared by the Cabinet Committee on Infrastructure will be executed under the National Highways Development Plan phase-V.
The project is estimated to cost Rs 925 crore and will be executed on a Design-Build-Finance-Operate-Transfer (toll) basis with a concession period of 24 years, including the construction period. The project involves sixlaning of the Hosur-Krishnagiri road on the National Highway 7.
Rinfra will spend on six-laning and maintenance of the section between 33km and 93km of the NH7. It is a major connecting road between Bangalore and Chennai and Bangalore and Salem. It is expected to reduce the time and cost of travel and add to transportation facilities to Madurai.
The project will start generating revenues immediately after achieving financial closure, which is expected to be achieved within the next six months, according to an release from Rinfra. About 15 companies had taken part in the bid process, based on the highest premium amount of Rs 66.90 crore. Rinfra has already completed execution of two road projects in the state—Namakkal-Karur toll project and Dindigul-Samayanallur toll project worth Rs 760 crore—and is commercially operational. It is also executing the Salem-Ulundurpet, Tiruchi- Karur and Tiruchi-Dindigul stretches, which are under completion. Rinfra is now executing ten road projects with a total outlay of Rs 8,725 crore. The company is looking for opportunities in Ultra Mega Road Projects across India, it said.

saysenthil May 20th, 2010, 10:12 AM Sorry folks!! I am going to ask an elementary question....
6-lane roads: What does it means? 3 in each side or 6 in each side.
If its the former, then already its 3 in each side. Whats the need?
And why this strech? I have been there several times. Already the roads are wide enough? Why do they do it? Is it going to bring much of a difference?
I really dont get this
Arasu May 20th, 2010, 05:57 PM ^^ It would be 3 lanes in each direction. It is not probably 6 lanes already.
I think Bangalore-Hosur is 8 lanes. This 6 lanes would continue the wider stretch from Bangalore to Krishnagiri (though, it would not be 8 lanes all the way.)
Even in rich countries, they don't have the same number of lanes all through. They have more lanes in stretches where the traffic is dense and a fewer lanes where the traffic is less.

IIndia may not be rich, but for future its better to lay good infrastructure now instead of going through the hassle of buying realestate later
Chennai bangalore 6 laning is must with Chennai Sriperumbudur 10 lanes
Arasu May 20th, 2010, 08:00 PM ^^ Number of road lanes and buying of real estate are two different things. NH department should buy certain amount of property (probably defined by distance from the median of the road in either side of it) all along the highways. Even if they don't have the cash at the moment, they should reserve the right to buy these properties at any future period. I believe such laws enabling the NHD may already be in place.
That doesn't neccessarily imply that they should construct 6 ot 8 lanes all along the stretch. That should be based on the traffic in different stretches of the highway.

YES. This was the first stretch (in GQ) in TN that was opened to traffic after four laning works were completed in Feb 2004. Now six laning works are to be taken up shortly.

NHAI has done a good job in straightening a lot of curves... before the 4-laning of Chennai - Southern Districts, the stretch from Trichy - Madurai was full of curves and even the best bus drivers take 2:15 mins to cover thsi distance without any stops .. overtaking was dangerous..... but thanks to the 4-laning lots of curves are removed...or atleast made smooth... I did this stretch only once after the 4-laning and all the by-passes were all planned well.. Melur by-pass is a good one.....

How will this model work ??

There was a similar situation in 2002 when " Karanodai " bridge ( NH-5) was being maintained and tolled by a different agency when L & T was awarded the stretch for Four laning. The issue did prolong for some time and later settled when both agreed on a package.
I beleive four laning was done with domestic funds and NHAI was collecting the toll for this reach. So there should be no problem. There may be an agreement to share the toll once six lane works are compleed.

Un fortunately this stretch is not with NHAI. The maintenance of this stretch is entrusted with NH wing of state HD. This stretch is really bad and carries lot of heavy commercial traffic in recent years. This is stretch is part of erstwhile ECR. M/s Kenhill of Australia did the alignment improvement study in late 90's but could not complete the work.
Hope proposals have been cleared to acquire land for widening this stretch. Let us wait and see.

Single carriage way (double lane) with paved shoulder is nothing but a slight improvement over 2 lane ( single carriage way ) road. There is no physical barrier in between the lanes carrying traffic from opposite direction. All roads come with shoulders. This one is paved with composition equal to that of main carriage way. The width of riding surface would be 10. 0 m in this case against 7.0 m for 2 lane - unpaved shoulders.
Hope I clarified your doubt. None of the pictures u have shown contaied this configuration.

The State Highways Department has also given approval for handing over to the NH the road from Perambalur to Thanjavur and from Madurai to Thondi.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) would set up a design for constructing the flyover near by the roundabout, which is adjacent to the Food Corporation of India.
The project was expected to gain its momentum within a month's time and would be completed within six months.
It would be made operational under the built operate transfer mode.
Asked about the ongoing 128-km road infrastructure development project on NH – 45 B, connecting Madurai and Tuticorin, the sources from NHAI said the works were expected to be completed in September this year.
Almost 90 per cent of the work was completed. Since the works on construction of two overbridges on the stretch were in progress, it was getting delayed.

Not sure how authentic this is, but if this is going to be true, I have some interesting question.
Considering these two new stretches.
1. New - NH 48 (Delhi-Chennai)
Old - NH 8 (Delhi-Jaipur Byepass-Udaipur-Ahmedabad-Ankleshwar-Mumbai) / NH 4 (Thane-Pune-Kolhapur-Hubli-Bengaluru) / NH 7 (Bengaluru-Krishnagiri) / NH 46 (Krishnagiri-Vellore-Ranipet) / NH 4 (Ranipet-Chennai)
2. New - NH 44 (Srinagar-Kanyakumari)
Old - NH 1A (Srinagar-Jammu-Pathankot-Jalandhar) / NH 1 (Jalandhar-Ambala-Delhi) / NH 2 (Delhi-Agra) / NH 3 (Agra-Gwalior) / NH 75 (Gwalior-Datia-Jhansi) / NH 26 (Jhansi-Sagar-Lakhnadon) / NH 7 (Lakhnadon-Nagpur-Adilabad-Hyderabad--Bengaluru-Salem-Madurai-Kanyakumari)
What exactly would be the number of the stretch between Bengaluru and Krishnagiri.
As you all know both EW corrider and GQ run on this same stretch (Thanks to NH 4 between Ranipet and B'luru turned out as Old Madras Road). But as far as the NH number it is NH 7.
If the new numbering comes into place, it falls under both 44 and 48. What would it be ? One number breaks the continuity of the other. For eg, if it is called 44, this would break 48 and referring the route for Delhi - Chennai is a question and vice versa if it is called 48. Confusing.

satishanu July 22nd, 2010, 10:27 PM Work on the four-lane road infrastructure development project along the National Highway 38, which was previously known as NH 45 B, is gaining momentum for completion by the end of September. The 128-km-project is being undertaken at an estimated cost of Rs. 629 crore.
The NH–38 connects Madurai with Tuticorin via Ettayapuram, Arupukottai, and Kaariapatti. About 90 per cent of the work had been completed, NHAI sources said.
A special team comprising officials from the Department of Revenue and Tahsildars had been deputed for acquiring land for extension of roads.
As for land acquisition in Tuticorin, 33 kms of land had been acquired from 11 villages at a compensation of Rs. 7.85 crore. Over half of the compensation was awarded and the remaining part of compensation was being provided.
In Ettayapuram taluk, 22,76,745 square metres of land had been acquired from 14 villages. In Arupukottai, land was acquired from 874 patta owners in 12 villages and compensation awarded to 408 of them.
With the help of village administrative officers, the matter would be brought to the notice of the person concerned for obtaining the benefits, sources said.
In Kaariapatti, land acquisition was made to the tune of 9, 53, 539 square metres from 10 villages and compensation to the tune of Rs. 5.8 crore had been given so far. The shifting of pipes in some parts of Eppodhumvenran and Valayankulam near Madurai was causing delays.
TWAD sources said that pipes have been shifted for a length of 23 kms out of the total 25 kms identified from Eppodhumvenran to Chettikurichi village. The remaining work was getting delayed due to obstruction by a few buildings. It is expected to get over by August.

BlackPearl July 23rd, 2010, 10:42 PM I was googling for info on the New National Highway numbers.Found this pdf http://dorth.gov.in/writereaddata/su...6143316640.pdf on this page http://www.indiamike.com/india/buses-automobiles-motorcycles-and-bicycles-f117/new-national-highway-numbers-t110066/
Confusing.
Maybe Ajith can help on this question... after seeing the route in the link I too have the same question !
Kewl Batty July 24th, 2010, 11:34 AM ^^ It'll come under both NH 44 and NH 48
Kathir July 25th, 2010, 04:41 AM ^^
Yeah, I got that. We can call it as 44 or 48 based on the source-destination we take. If that is the case what will actually the signboards and the milestones carry as their label in this particular stretch. Will it be like NH 44/48 ?
Arasu July 25th, 2010, 07:12 AM most probably, yes. That is the practice in the US.
Naveenmech July 25th, 2010, 02:06 PM What is the new number for NH-47?
Kathir July 25th, 2010, 04:56 PM It will be NH 544 as it is an offshoot of NH 44. Also it will not be the same full stretch. It will end at Ernakulam instead of Kanyakumari. This is because the rest of the NH 47 from Ernakulam to Kanyakumari will be merged with NH 17 (Panvel to Ernakulam) to make New NH 66. So, the NH 47 as we know passing Kovai will start from its junction with NH 44 at Salem as new NH 544 and terminates at its junction with NH 66 near Ernakulam.
For more details refer to the link @ Post #633 above.

Hey Ajith. So, will it be NH 44/48 for Bengaluru - Krishnagiri section ?
Arul Murugan July 27th, 2010, 07:36 PM Great info. Ajith.
No more famous NH 45, NH 7 and NH 47?
NH544 a.k.a NH47 never goes via Erode and Tiruppur! Any plans to name the Bhavani-Perundurai part as Erode bye-pass and Avinashi byepass as Tiruppur bye-pass?
Any logic behind NH544? looks to be 5th main NH branching from NH44??
KL border-Kerala-Cape part of NH47 is NH544 or any new no.?
Arasu July 27th, 2010, 08:27 PM ^^ Any overall logic for the nomenclature? Does it provide the possibility of adding new highways into the grid without having to rename all the NH once again?
The have a system in the US where all the north-south interstate highways are in odd numbers and east-west highways are numbered even.

Arul/ Arasu.
Please refer to the link @ Post #633 above. http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpost.php?p=60584069&postcount=633
The logic behind the nomenclature has been discussed in detail over there.
In brief
http://www.indiamike.com/india/buses-automobiles-motorcycles-and-bicycles-f117/new-national-highway-numbers-t110066/
All East-West highways now have odd numbers, starting in the North and increasing in number towards the South. In other words, the greater the latitude the smaller the NH number and vice-versa.
Similarly, all North-South highways now have even numbers, starting in the East and increasing in number towards the West. In other words, the greater the longitude the smaller the NH number and vice-versa.
The new system doesn't mean that old numbers have simply been replaced with new ones. In many cases "old" highways or parts thereof have been merged and given a single new number.
In general the major highways have single- or double-digit numbers. Offshoots of these highways have triple digits. For example, offshoots of NH 2 are numbered 102, 202, 302 and 502. Offshoots of NH 7 are numbered 107, 307, 507, 707 and 907 Offshoots of NH 15 are numbered 115, 215, 315, 415, 515 and 715

Arul,I generalised the route by naming the districts...For your satisfaction I've edited the same.:)
NH - 544 is the major offshoot from NH - 44 in Tamilnadu.The another being NH - 744 & NH - 944.:)
The NH - 544 will continue through Palakkad,Thrissur and terminate at Edappalli with NH - 66.(From Panvel, Panaji, Karwar, Udupi, Magalore, Kasargod, Kannur, Kozhikode, Ponnani, Edappally, Aroor, Cherthala, Alappuzha, Kollam, Attingal, Thiruvananthapuram and terminates near Kanyakumari with NH - 44.Here,the Edappalli-Thiruvananthapuram-Kanyakumari was the part of 'old' NH - 47)

Kathir had already replied about the nomenclature which is almost similar to that followed in US.We can add more highways without having rename the all again..

ChennaiIndian August 9th, 2010, 07:51 PM http://www.deccanchronicle.com/chennai/spy-cameras-accident-prone-nh-46-171
Vellore, Aug. 8: Rash and negligent driving on National Highway (NH) 46 connecting Bengaluru and Chennai will soon come under the scanner of the police department. In a joint venture to streamline the traffic and bring down the number of accidents along the NH, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the police department in Vellore district are set to instal surveillance cameras at vital points along the road.
In 2008 and 2009, 1,546 persons were killed in 1,419 road accidents in the district. More than 60 per cent of the accidents occurred in 30 accident-prone areas along the 150-km stretch of NH 46, which passes through all major towns like Arcot, Vellore, Ambur and Vaniyambadi in the district, according to district crime records bureau (DCRB).
Following the frequent accidents along NH 46, which has turned into a deathtrap for road-users, the police department has sent a proposal to NHAI to instal surveillance cameras in 18 key points to curb rash and negligent driving. However, NHAI has given the nod to instal cameras only at three spots.

ajithv September 13th, 2010, 12:20 PM TIRUCHI: The Tiruchi-Karaikudi National Highway would be developed at a cost of Rs.374 crore by the National Highways Authority of India.
The road running for a distance of about 110 km would be strengthened as a two-lane highway.
According to NHAI sources, the project has been awarded to Transstroy Ltd-OJSC Consortium, an Indo-Russian joint venture.
The road is to be developed under the National Highways Development Project –Phase III A.
The Tiruchi-Karaikudi NH 210 is the only highway that has not been covered under the four-lane projects around the city.

Is taking ECR route a good option or I am better of taking NH45?
prathapdba September 17th, 2010, 08:06 AM hi Shawman123, it depends on the timing.
if you start very early at chennai by 3am (my usual timing) then taking ECR is much quicker (drive safely:)). this means you can avoid pondy - Cuddalore traffic.
During day time better go via NH45 - vikaravandi - panruti route.
i do travell this route to mayavaram very often, hope the byepass road @ Chidambaram and Sirkazhi will finish soon.
prathapdba September 17th, 2010, 08:18 AM Ajith - Any updates on the award of contract for 6/8 laning of chennai- Walaja stretch?
No updates till now as per this page - http://www.nhai.org/nhdpphase5.asp
Also, any info on the new flyovers/underpasses and bypasses that are gonna come on the Krishnagiri-Walaja stretch?
hi, they need to concentrate on making this route like a express highway ( without any intersection / cross roads ). LOTS OF INTERSECTIONS HAVE SIGNALS IN THIS ROUTE :ohno::bash: . in NH . so whats happeneing is the suburn police do stops the vehiceles on NH 4 and allows the crossing vehicels. this cause 10 -15 vehicels queued up one behind another and start moving again together. so if you stand in NH4 and notice, you will see some bunch of 20 vehicels move together ... then a small gap ... then again another vehicels. and in these 20 vehicels speed varies for one to another. so it makes diffcult to overtake and takes more time.
i travell to nokia daily and it is very painfull for us to travell...

Thanks prathap. Do you know how long the drive to chidambaram will be. Also how risky ecr is driving at night. I have to attend an event at 730AM on sunday.

In good speed (early morning thru ECR):
chennai > pondy [ Max 2 hours ]
pondy > Cuddalore [ Max 30 mins ]
Cuddalore > Chidambaram [ Max 1 hour 15 mins]
Chidambaram > Sirkazhi [ Max 45 mins ] ( driving in small car you can go faster)
Sirkazhi > mayavaram [ Max 45 mins ] ( driving in small car you can go faster)
if you start by 3.30 am, by 6.00 am you should pass cuddalore. then you can reach chidambaram by 7.30 am. but be carefull with ECR for 3 reasons:
1. Animals.
2. Buses coming in opposite direction.
3. Police barricades.
you woun't see too many heavy vehicels (trucks) at this time.

i mentioned small cars because these two stress have lots of deep curves, actually very dangerous curves. driving a small car would be easy and helps to maintain some avg speed.
have a nice trip. get some pictures for us and post in the new tread ...

Yes indeed. But I felt a proper well-maintained 2-lane highway like ECR is sufficient than a 4-lane which would disturb a lot of things.

bonoslack7 November 17th, 2010, 01:02 PM ^^ It is better and cheaper to build a bigger road. ECR was built as a 2 lane road. Now, within a decade, they have decided to make it 4 laned. Its double the work. You never know when traffic will pick up. Also, accidents would be reduced.
dr_thapalathy November 17th, 2010, 02:20 PM I heard a news that Villupuram - Nagapattinam NH will be 4 laned? Is it so?
Anyone please provide a update on this news.

Better they start the 4 laning works after the completion of Cuddalore - Chennai track. Orelse, it will be a triple expense for the govt and also double expense for SR.
prathapdba November 18th, 2010, 05:53 AM Yes indeed. But I felt a proper well-maintained 2-lane highway like ECR is sufficient than a 4-lane which would disturb a lot of things.
Cheers,
Raj
don't know what do you mean excatly when you say "disturb a lot of things" , better to finish it of in one go. accidents will happen a lot if it was left with 2 lane, like ECR.:)
guru98 November 18th, 2010, 01:32 PM Tindivanam bypass will cross over Tindi-pondy road only so you can take left exit to pondy from tindivanam bypass.
Oh really. Thanks. I never tried that way. when I travelled from chennai to pondy, i took the right road to Tindivanam from the NH, then struggled through Tindivanam bus stand to catch the Tindi-pondi highway. I never knew there was connectivity between Tindivanam bypass and new NH-66.
gvijayan November 18th, 2010, 03:48 PM ^^ We really need giant overhead signboards on all our National Highways, especially the at least 1 km before a junction where one needs to take a diversion when two major highways meet.
Some of my friends who drove from Coimbatore to Bangalore and Chennai newly have had so many problems in taking the correct route at Salem towards their destination, because of the lack of proper directions. Especially the signboards along the old NH-47 alignment and the new NH-47 alignment are very confusing.
In city limits, they should be updating the signboards when traffic pattern/rules are changed. For instance, in Chennai Mylapore Luz Corner Junction, when you come from Mylapore Tank towards the signal, the only way you can turn is left. One can neither proceed straight towards Royappettah, nor proceed Right towards to Santhome as per the rules revised long back. But the hugh signboard at the Junction still has directions marked Straight and Right which is very confusing.

In vikravandi- Thanjavur route,
vikravandi-meensuruti will be 4 laned, meensuruti-Tanjore will be 2 laned. (current 2 lane road will be broadened as per NHAI standards). this project is at 1100 crores. but this is in very beginning stage and tenders are floated. last date of submission of tender is around Dec 2nd week.

I know about the Vikravandi - Tanjore news.
Apart from this, i heard this news when Pondy CM was speaking in Assembly meeting regarding the topic reducing traffic congestion in Pondicherry. A news paper report reporting this news, tells that Villupuram - Nagapattinam NH 45 A will be converted into 4 lane. As a part of that, NHAI will build a by-pass road for puducherry, starting at Villianur and joining at Thavalakuppam.
That is the news i am asking, if anyone of you have information about that?
bonoslack7 November 26th, 2010, 06:29 PM http://sify.com/finance/two-laning-of-tindivanam-krishnagiri-highway-approved-news-default-kl0v4laddgj.html
A cabinet panel Friday approved the two-laning of the 178-km-long Tindivanam-Krishnagiri section of National Highway (NH)-66 in Tamil Nadu, at a cost of Rs.610.21 crore.
'The Cabinet Committee on Infrastructure (CCI) today (Friday) approved the implementation of the project of two laning with/without paved shoulders of 178.060 km long Tindivanam-Krishnagiri section of NH-66,' a official statement said.
The project, under National Highway Development Project (NHDP) phase-III, will be on the design, build, finance, operate and transfer (DBFOT) basis with the concession period for 15 years including a construction period of two years.
According to the statement, the main objective of the project is improving infrastructure in Tamil Nadu and to increase the capacity of the sections of the NH-66.
gvijayan November 29th, 2010, 04:47 AM ^^ This road needs to be converted into 4 lane. At least the stretch between Tindivanam and Tiruvannamalai. We have been witnessing lots of head-on collisions of Route#122 buses between Chennai and Tiruvannamalai in this stretch. The trafffic in this stretch really makes it eligible for 4-lane.
Brand coimbatore November 30th, 2010, 04:25 AM Does any one have idea about the detail plan of 6-lanning btw chengapalli and neelambur of NH 47?
I saw flyovers being built at many a places, does the stretch include any grade separator like the one in trumpet of salem??
gvijayan November 30th, 2010, 04:55 AM ^^ I strongly believe there should be one at the Neelambur Junction.
Mr.Nellai December 2nd, 2010, 01:35 PM Sattankulam- Mudhalur road is fully flooded with rain water. During rainy season this would be the case so people complained to NH officials to increase the road height so the water might drain. Instead of constructing new road with increased height,NH officials collected money from Sattankulam people to buy pipeline so as to drain the water that remained stagnant in front of their homes and to a well nearby. Not able to withstand the heavy rain, the well got completely filled up and water started stagnating the road side. Moreover in due course of time the pipeline also was broken off :hahaha: Poor people now வட போச்சேன்னு சோகமா இருக்காங்க.
