Highway expansion will boost economy in Krishnagiri

KRISHNAGIRI: Widening of Krishnagiri-Tindivanam NH-66 (from seven metres to 10 metres) will improve economic activities in this region.

This highway is one of the main corridors connecting the Union Territory Puducherry via Tiruvannamalai, a well-known pilgrim centre. Lakhs of devotees from Tamilnadu, Puducherry, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh visit Annamalaiyar Temple and Melmaruvathur Temple here to perform Girivalam (circumambulation), especially during full moon day, and Thai Poosam festival.

A senior official from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), Villupuram division, told The Hindu that contractors had been asked to send their proposals for the project.

The official said the contract would be finalised in January 2011.

The project would have to be completed in 24 months from the date of awarding the contract.

The 178-km Krishnagiri-Tindivanam road will have eight bye-passes covering eight towns -- Tindivanam, Gingee, Keelpennathur, Tiruvannamalai, Chengam, Singarapettai, Uthangarai and Mathur.

Two major fly-overs will also come up on Thondayar River near Gingee in Villupuram district and Pampar River near Uthangarai in Krishnagiri district.

A railway overbridge over the Samalpatti rail-level crossing is also a part of this project. Besides this, 17 minor bridges will also be built along the road. There will also be 133 culverts and 73 pipe culverts.

The road will pass through 42 semi-urban and rural settlements from Krishnagiri to Tindivanam and Anandavadi, Muttukadu and Siruvadi reserved forests in 17 locations. Over 19,000 tamarind and neem trees will be axed.

However, the NHAI officials said they would make all efforts to retain as many trees as possible.

They said the NHAI would plant three trees for every tree felled.

Two to three toll plazas may be set up near Singarapettai, Tiruvannamalai and Gingee town.

The Cabinet Committee on Infrastructure has approved the project

Sattankulam- Mudhalur road is fully flooded with rain water. During rainy season this would be the case so people complained to NH officials to increase the road height so the water might drain. Instead of constructing new road with increased height,NH officials collected money from Sattankulam people to buy pipeline so as to drain the water that remained stagnant in front of their homes and to a well nearby. Not able to withstand the heavy rain, the well got completely filled up and water started stagnating the road side. Moreover in due course of time the pipeline also was broken off :hahaha: Poor people now வட போச்சேன்னு சோகமா இருக்காங்க.

Does Sathankulam have a National Highway?

Neither Sathankulam nor Tiruchendur has any NH, i guess it was an oversight to mistake State Highways Department with NHAI :)

Hi Folks,

Can anyone please let me know the stance of Madurai – Rameswaram -Dhanushkodi – 4 Lanning Project. Is that the DPR completed...and what is the Outcome of that...?

And, from the previous posts, I heard that this project comes / crosses via SINGAMPUNARI. (i.e.) Some changes have been made to this project in the DPR due to some land issues and, this project has got some deviation from the original plan but not dropped. Is that True..?!

If it's so, what are the towns / districts to be covered in this project and, how come the SINGAMPUNARI Town comes into the picture... ?! From which Source, this news has been taken from...?! Pls clarify...!

Thanks..!

2. Madurai – Rameswaram -Dhanushkodi – Road Widening --(4 lanning plan was dropped)Source (http://www.thehindu.com/2008/08/19/stories/2008081951900300.htm)

Techcity, spl Thanks for your kind info. I got the news in Hindu. this aug 19th, news.

After that, (last week i think, i saw the news in dinamalar, i will find out and give to u guys later) Same Swaminathan said n all Tamil dailies published and says that, there is a rumour going on MDU - Rameshwaram project dropped due to no land, and requested all dont spread the rumours against the project, as it is not dropped, nhai going to do the project.

Please see this nhai link. nhai is pumping huge amount 1212 Crores just for 186 kms.

http://www.nhai.org/projectsonoffer_PHASE%20III%20B%20.asp

BEAUTY of this project, Nhai is going to construct one more PAMBAN bridge adjacent to the present pamban. that's why cost is toooo much 1212 Crs just for 180 kms. so Pamban bridge will be 4 lanned!!.

at present, there is no road to dhanuskodi, nhai will extend the road from Rameshwaram to dhanuskodi along the ocean bed. (that too 4 lanes)

only Major change in this project is :

nhai is not going to wide the existing 2 lanes from madu - ramnad road. bcas there is no land to do that. in the present road, one side is vaigai river and another side MDU - Ramnad BG track. inbetween these, river - road - track, there is a only small land. there are 100s of villages, towns exists in this small land.

Hence, nhai will not go and touch this road, instead, they are going to construct new road just North side of Vaigai river.

This road will start from Madurai - TRY 4 lane meeting point at MIBT - Ring road, from there it will go Singampunari town - then it will cross vaigai river, - then paramakudi - then it will go towards Ramnad, rameshwaram, dhanuskodi on 4 lanes.

i m keep watching this project and reading all relative news on this road project, as it is going to change the face of Ramnad and Sivaganga dists.

As an Indian, I dont accept Nhai is pumping huggggge cost 1300 crs on this road, it doesnt make sense to me, bcas there will not be enough revenue to get this money back. moreover, Sivaganga and ramnad are poor dists, nothing is there, all empty dry land. what is there in rameshwaram and dhanuskodi to get 4 lane. Nothing, there is no traffic for 4 lane. it is dead end!

But as a Tamil and maduriate, i would welcome this HUGE project going to happen in the poor dist like Ramnad in south TN, this is only big Project Central and State govt r doing after 50 years of Independance in the district.

HENCE, MDU - Dhanuskodi 4 lannning is still on the pipeline. please see below news for proofs.

^^ Why can't they at least begin the work on the already acquired land?
This stretch has off late become terrible to ride on. Being a vital connection between Northern Kerala/Salem/Erode/Tirupur/Coimbatore and Chennai, the kind of treatment this stretch gets is very pathetic.

I think, 4 lane will not work for ooty. This will destroy the beautiness in this hilly stretch. It needs to be relayed with quality roads. No 4 laning business to do here.

Hi Ajith,

I had this posted this query before also in this forum. Once a new firms take up the 6-laning of a stretch which is already a 4 laned toll road, how does the sharing of toll revenue happen between the firms which did the 4 laning and 6 laning once the 6 laning is done.

The busy NH 47, connecting Salem with Thiruvananthapuram via Kochi, is gearing up for improvement. The stretch from Chengapalli to Walayar is being widened and strengthened at a cost of Rs 860 crore. The National Highways Authority of India is all set to form an Eastern By-pass Road from Sulur to Mettuppalayam at a cost of Rs 650 crore.

On its part, the state government will invest Rs 284 crore for the works from Madukkarai on NH 47 to NH 67 Mettuppalayam Road, cutting across Siruvani Road, Marudhamalai Road, Thadagam Road and will join the Mettuppalayam Road.

There is no Bypass at Mayiladuthurai. The bypass at Sirkazhi is almost complete except for ROB which is close to railway station. In future long distance buses may skip Sirkazhi town especially during odd hours.

The existing bridge across Kollidam at anakkarai is maintained by state PWD even though the road is upgraded to NH ( 45 C) and entrusted to NHAI for development. NHAI would construct a new bridge as the old bridge is more than 150 years old and has become structurally weak and also the carriage way width is less than 7m.

The old bridge which developed some cracks is now being repaired. Hope the repair works are completed and the bridge is opened to light traffic in April 11 including buses.

The revenue share agreement between NHAI and the Concessionaire that if traffic exceeds xxxxxx vehicles per day, the Concessionaire share that with the NHAI.It is assumed in most cases, by the time the 6 laning is completed, it would have reached that mark. The agreement clauses changes in different cases. So can't go in depth details into that.

Yes.. Sirkali bypass is NOT fully completed as it needs to cross the railway line and ROB works is in place. If you see the video at the end of the bypass it says diversion and ROB works is going on beyond the diversion. If ROB completes then this will be useful both towards Mayiladuthurai as well as towards Nagappattinam

Due to cracks only LMV are permitted and no buses or trucks is permitted.

The bridge is too old to be repaired and too narrow to continue on with it.

Already estimates are prepared to construct new bridge and all are waiting for the works to start. It will take more than 3 years from the start of construction as Coleroon branches in to two. So forget about traveling in this for another 3-4 years

Tindivanam - Tiruvannamalai - Krishnagiri stretch of NH66 is also still lane. Sometime back we saw tenders to pave this road with 2lane plus shoulder on both sides. So this is also going to remain 2-lane in long run.

But I strongly believe that the Tiruvannamalai - Tindivanam stretch should be made 4-lane soon. There are frequent head-on collisions of the Route#122 (Chennai - Tiruvannamalai) buses in this stretch claiming several lives.

I personally feel that this project must be dropped since it passes through hilly routes and reserve forest areas.
I am not sure the NH 209 requires a four lane just apart from this stretch of hilly areas. This road passes from DGL-PLN-POY-CBE-STY-MYS. In this stretch I am not sure this is a prominent cargo lane but only has a increase in passenger tarriff. So until this trasnforms into such a corridor this should not get converted.

DGL - PLN - POY - CBE should be converted to 4-lane with bypasses for Pollachi, Udumalapet, Palani and Oddanchatram.. This is the freight corridor for Coimbatore to Tuticorin Port.

Did you forget, the Coimbatore-Karur section??The Karur-Trichy section is now under construction is NOT a fully 4-laned NH.The list will continue for 2 lane NHs.:)

Due to the time constraints, I can't list out the whole. You can refer to NHAI/MoRTH website for further details.Of course,a recent news from "The Hindu" posted above is one among them..:)

I mean to say about the projects sanctioned and not the existing and completed highways.

Hello Mr.pritm, the four laning of NH 209 may be not necessary near Dindigul, but as considered around the western region, Annur-Coimbatore-Pollachi-Udumalpetpet-Palani has major passenger traffic at day time and Frieght traffic at night from Coimbatore to Tuticorin port. More than a four lane, a six laning is necessary for Pollachi-Coimbatore-Annur stretch as it is one of the stretch in India to have the highest density of educational institutions, it also has many industrial zones like SIPCOT and IT SEZ's that spread around saravanampatti region. This stretch is also a gateway to Karnataka from western part of Tamil Nadu.

http://www.dnaindia.com/money/report_ivrcl-set-to-sell-stake-in-three-tamil-nadu-road-projects_1531682

IVRCL Assets & Holdings Ltd, a subsidiary of IVRCL Infrastructure and Projects Ltd, is set to divest its holding in three road projects in Tamil Nadu.

The projects — Kumarpalayam-Chengapalli, Salem-Kumarpalayam and Chengapalli-Walayar — were taken up with an outlay of Rs2,500 crore. While work on the Chengapalli-Walayar stretch is still on and is expected to be commissioned sometime in 2013, the other two projects have already moved into the tolling mode.

While the nitty-gritty of the divestment is still being worked out, the deal is said to be on the verge of getting sealed.

The divestment would happen at the special purpose vehicle level, sources said, adding that IVRCL would divest up to 49% in the projects.

The sale, expected to take place through a private equity placement, is expected to rake in about Rs750 crore for the company.

“A couple of investors are currently carrying out the due diligence and it is too early to talk about the details of the divestment,” IVRCL chairman and managing director E Sudhir Reddy told DNA without giving out details.

Sources tracking the developments said the deal would be finalised in the next three months since the investors too are keen on finalising the investment keeping in view the viability of the projects being offered.

“PE firms have been looking for investment opportunity in the road sector. However, with the changing market conditions, the PEs are willing to give preference to the projects that are already operational than those that are still in the execution mode,” a source said.

Even in IVRCL’s case, one of the three projects is still being executed, though it is an extension of the existing road that has started tolling.

Parent IVRCL Infrastructure too is said to be working on a derisking strategy to improve its revenues from overseas markets. “We are already working on that. We hope to get about 25% of our revenues from the overseas market in future,” Reddy said.

Will be a paper project. Environmental ministry Ramesh will trash it into dust bins.

Since British period they are exploring to connect Chamrajnagar with Sathy either to Erode or Mettupalayam in rail route. But not successful and project never took.

4-lane will be a engineering marvel here for NHAI.

I have driven through these areas and it is fabulous.

if TN & Karnataka Govts can plan a eco sensitive tour program with proper roads (not a 4 lane road needed) and Jungle Lodges / motels on the way, it would be nice.

Five new bypass roads would be built as part of the development of the Tiruchi-Karaikudi National Highway (NH 67) which has been taken up by the National Highways Authority of India.

Land acquisition for the project is underway in full swing and pre-construction works have already begun. The notifications for the land acquisition have been issued and the process of awarding compensation to the owners would be completed soon.

Land acquisition

Nearly 80 per cent of the land acquisition process has been completed, official sources in the National Highways Authority of India told The Hindu on Tuesday.

About 421.5 hectares of land is to be acquired for developing the highway, which will run for a distance of about 110 km when completed. The highway is to be developed on an annuity basis at a cost of Rs.374 crore with two lanes and paved shoulders.

The project, sanctioned under the National Highways Development Project-Phase III A, has been awarded to Transstroy Ltd-OJSC Consortium, an Indo-Russian joint venture.

The project would involve construction of a new by-pass road connecting three major national highways (NH), the Tiruchi-Thanjavur NH 67, the Tiruchi-Pudukottai-Karaikudi NH 210 and the Tiruchi-Madurai NH 45B on the outskirts of Tiruchi.

The bypass would be a semi-ring road which will be connecting Thuvakudi, Mathur and Panchapur on the three highways.

Aside from this, four other by-pass roads would be built as part of the project at Keeranur, Pudukottai, Tirumayam and Karaikudi.

Relief for motorists

The construction of the by-pass roads would come as a big relief for motorists as well as the residents of these highly congested towns, through which the highway currently runs across.

The Karaikudi-Ramanathapuram highway is to be developed under a separate project.

Sir,you are correct..No 4 lane is needed.Atleast now,the TN side is maintained in good condition. You might've observed how the hairpin locations are well maintained.Of course,Motels/Lodges are required especially at top jugle locations..At present small ones;but restaurant types are only available.

Construction of two road over-bridges is pending

Work on the four-lane project between Thuvakudi, on the outskirts of the city, and Thanjavur on National Highway 67 has been completed.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is likely to go for “partial commissioning” of the project.

Construction of two road over-bridges (ROB) at level crossings at Ariyamangalam and Tiruverumbur is pending on this stretch. A bypass road has been laid around Vallam as part of the project.

The 56-km project was taken up at a cost of Rs.280 crore under the National Highways Development Project-Phase III. The scheme is being executed by Madhucon Projects, under Build Operate and Transfer Scheme (BOTS).

The four-lane work has been completed on nearly 52 km, between the BHEL campus and Thanjavur.

NHAI sources indicated that collection of toll on the section is expected to begin shortly after a public notification. A gazette notification had been issued, they said.

The proposed road over-bridges were located further down towards Tiruchi.

Work had started on the construction of the Tiruverambur bridge, while work on shifting utilities such as power lines and water mains were under way at Ariyamangalam.

Land acquisition for both the bridges had been completed. Both the bridges would run parallel to the existing bridges, which would be strengthened to accommodate traffic on one direction.

The two bridges were expected to be completed by January/February next year.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has issued work orders for the commencement of the Ennore-Manali Road Improvement Project (EMRIP). The work is expected to begin in a week's time, said a senior Chennai Port Trust (ChPT) official.

Talking to The Hindu, he said the cost of the much delayed project almost doubled to Rs.600 crore due to escalation and conversion of the planned two-lane road into a four-lane one. Though the project was approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs in April 2000, it was delayed due to the non-completion of acquisition of the required land. It is being executed through a Special Purpose Vehicle in which the State government, NHAI, ChPT and Ennore Port Ltd (EPL) are the main stakeholders.

According to the official, the revised estimate envisages Rs.139 crore towards equity and Rs.110.68 crore towards loan contribution as ChPT's share of investment.

The actual contribution for the project by the ChPT is Rs.238 crore and EPL Rs.34.20 crore. So far, ChPT had given Rs.67 crore and EPL Rs.13 crore.

As per the proposed plan, the four laning of 32-km road will start from Chennai Port ‘zero' gate to Manali Oil Refinery Road (MORR), MORR Inner Ring Road (four lane and modification) to Tiruvottiyur-Ponneri-Panchetti Road.

“The equipment mobilisation for the work had begun and it would be completed within 24 months from the date of commencement. However, no toll will be collected on this road. Besides, work on the 1.6 km four-lane (from ‘zero' gate to Kasimedu N4 police station) would be taken up soon and it will completed before the commencement of the North East monsoon,” he said.

Regarding Sirkazhi byepasss, does anyone have the info as to whether it is fully completed. I saw some vehicles moviing beyond the traffic diversion near the railway station. Was that ROB completed fully and can use the full stretch of the byepass. Last week when i travelled towards Nagapatinam from chennai, there was no diversion board on the sirkazhi byepass and some vehicles moved straight. To avoid any risk, I took the left diversion and passed through railway track/sirkazhi bus stand to reach the Tharangambadi etc.. So does anyone has the details about the other stretch of sirkazhi byepass?

If you go straight down south from tindivanam, bypassing it, you ll notice a bridge in the by-pass section and there will be a exit ramp for that road in it's side, which will lead to 4 lane NH 66

The last time i went, it was not fully completed, though you can by-pass the first half of Sirkazhi to reach the bus stand quickly without traffic. You need to take the road, which has a level crossing very near to the Sirkazhi railway station. But i don't know what is the status now.
The Chidambaram by-pass is fully completed, though buses are not allowed to use the by-pass in the day time.

It is now a delight to take a car drive on National Highway-45 (NH-45) or Grand Southern Trunk Road to the industrial town of Tiruchi from Chennai but the travel, apart form making a dent in the wallet, extracts a further cost in the form of tollcharges.

Well-laid, four-lane roads have made it easy for commuters to cover the 300-plus km in less than five hours. However, for a one-way trip to Tiruchi from Chennai, the toll fee comes to Rs 196. This is nearly the cost of the bus fare in a State Transport Corporation bus, says Sriram, who travels to Tiruchi every other week by car.

This is a familiar complaint, not only from Sriram, but from thousands of people who crisscross the country paying huge toll while travelling on the NH. According to the latest data, there are over 150 toll-based build-own-transfer roads on the NH network. The toll collection from all these crossed Rs 1,500 crore last year.

Sriram, however, is willing to pay the fairly large amount, as he is able to save nearly three hours by avoiding a bus or train journey. Tiruchi is now just four or five hours away by car while it takes nearly seven hours by bus or train to get there, he says.

Compromise

According to Bashyam, who has been travelling every month to his hometown Srirangam (10 km from Tiruchi) from Chennai by car for the last three years, the toll hurts. “But we need to look at the long-term view in terms of savings in vehicle maintenance and also fuel cost,” he adds.

Before the road was developed as a four-lane, his car used to consume nearly 20 litres of diesel on a one-way trip. But today the car consumes less than 15 litres, thanks to the smoother drive. Bashyam also noticed that there was less wear-and-tear of the tyres after the development of the highways.
Money-making plazas

The toll plazas, too, make good money. Take, for instance, the Attur toll plaza near Tindivanam. Nearly 11,000 vehicles pass through the plaza every day. On peak days, such as Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, it could be over 15,000 vehicles, says Nataraj, who works at the toll plaza.

The average daily collection is Rs 8 lakh. During festival seasons such as Pongal and Diwali, it could be over Rs 10 lakh, he adds.

National project

The National Highways comprise only about 2 per cent of the road length in the country and yet carry over 40 per cent of the traffic. In 1998, the first task mandated to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) was the implementation of the National Highways Development Programme (NHDP) — comprising the Golden Quadrilateral, the North-South Corridor and the East-West Corridor.

In addition, the NHAI is responsible for about 1,000 km of highways connecting major ports and also the National Highways 8A, 24, 6, 45 & 27. The length of highways under the NHAI is around 14,162 km.

As of March, the NHAI has awarded over 150 toll-based build, own and transfer projects across the country, according to information available on its Web site.

Motorists using the four-lane Thuvakudi-Thanjavur section of National Highway 67 will have to pay toll from Thursday.

The four-lane project on the Tiruchi-Thanjavur highway stretch was taken up at a cost of Rs.280 crore under the National Highways Development Project-Phase III. The scheme is being executed by Madhucon Projects, under Build Operate and Transfer Scheme.

Four-lane work has been completed on nearly 52 km, between the BHEL campus and Thanjavur.

Two road over-bridges across level crossing at Ariyamangalam and Tiruverumbur in Tiruchi City are yet to be built. However, the four-lane highway on the Thuvakudi-Thanjavur section is now being commissioned.

A public notification issued on May 1 stated that M/s. Tiruchi Thanjavur Expressways Limited would collect the toll. A toll plaza has been built beyond Thuvakudi, in the outskirts of the city.

Toll would be collected at the following rates for vehicles passing through the section in the categories of single journey, multiple journeys and monthly pass: Car/van/jeep – Rs.36, Rs.54 and Rs.1,075 (single, multiple and monthly pass rates respectively); light commercial vehicle – Rs.63, Rs.94 and Rs.1,882; truck/bus – Rs.125, Rs.188 and Rs.3,764; and multi-axle vehicle – Rs.202, Rs.302 and Rs.6,049.

Special concessions in the form of monthly passes would be issued to local people comprising residents of villages and towns, establishments and industrial units, employees of establishments and industrial units, self-employed persons and businessmen having a place of work in local areas.

They would be issued the passes in two categories – one for a radius of 10 km and the other for a radius of 20 km from the toll plaza.

Under local traffic category I, cars, vans or jeeps would be issued monthly passes at Rs.150. Under local traffic category II, the monthly pass would be issued for these vehicles at Rs.300.

The monthly passes for local people would be issued on the production of specified documentary proof.

Commercial vehicles used for local transport would also be offered concessional fee: Rs.25 for trucks and Rs.15 for light commercial vehicles for each entry on production of proof (in the form of goods challan for origin and destination clearly specifying the return journey of the vehicle) for plying within 20 km.

Consumer plea

Meanwhile, the Federation of Consumer and Service Organisations, a city-based organisation, has appeal to the NHAI to defer the toll collection until the four-lane project was fully completed.

Expressing surprise over the decision to commence the toll collection on the stretch from Thuvakudi, M.Sekaran, president of the federation, in a representation to the NHAI, said once the toll collection commenced there was no pressing commitment for the contractor to complete the project.

Currently, several accidents were taking place on the highway and it is the duty of the NHAI to segregate local city traffic from the main highway corridor as per norms, Mr.Sekaran said.

The road from where the shot was taken is Kovai Road in Karur Town. The same roads leads behind to Trichy & Dindigul too.The Left Direction I mentioned here is,at Sukkaliyur, the NH-67 also joins with NH-7.So no need to enter the town. The new Karur Bypass on NH-67 is also in progress.Thats why the left direction.Nothing wrong in that. Please see the picture in post#833..You will get the answer very clearly ..:)

TN state highways are really neglected . TN govt should give tender to some large infra companies like L&T and form a good layer of road. These small companies do a useless job which is not even lasting for 2 years. If all the 9000 kms are relaid it will make sea change to TN PROGRESS

I see way too many sign boards on the approach to the toll booth. Plus, those letters are way too small and lots of paragraphs are written. Do they expect people to stop the car and get down and read all that s**t? :bash::bash:

Why can't they make it very simple? Have they seen toll booths in the US?

While appraoching a Toll Plaza about 1.25 km and 500m ahead there is an info sign about this. This means you have to slow down the vehicle. All these boards which are the mandatory boards which are to be displayed in the Toll Plaza area.It includes the Notification,Exempted Vehicles,Toll Rates etc..

Here in India,if you don't put the sign boards; so many are there to question you "Why you didn't you put the sign board and get informed me?".If you put the signboard the same may say "Why these much and Whats the need of it ?".Saare,This is India NOT US.

I have a Doubt in this regard. It is well known that slow moving vehicles should go in left side and fast moving on the right side of road. Now, For instance if a vehicle is riding at 110 kmph which is high speed on right side of four lane road and another vehicle coming from behind at 140 + kmph, now should the vehicle moving front give way by moving to left side?

Good question!!! I have not read the rules but this is the practice in countries in Middleeast

The right most lane (in India) in multilanes should be only used for overtaking. That is vehicles should be only using the left lane in 4-lanes at all times and in case you want to overtake the vehicle in front of you, you move to the right lane and do the overtaking and then come back to left lane.

In case of 6-lanes, the left 2 lanes will be used for normal driving, with trucks and buses on left most lane and cars on the middle lane. The right most lane is used for overtaking for cars. In middle east in 6 lanes they do not allow trucks and buses to use the fast lane, they are required to use the middle lane only for overtaking.

Once again, I have not refered to the Indian laws and it is only driving rules based in Middle East.

Come on! There are tons of signboards and there are paragraphs with a small font. Definitely, one has to stop the vehicle and would need 2 mins to read it fully. This is for one signboard. There are many of them. :)

While approaching the toll booth, all that I would want to know is the toll amount and the lane to take for my vehicle to pay the toll. That's all! Not Indira Gandhi stories.

No harm in having all these boards because it enlists all the categories that are exempted from paying toll etc etc..

But I also have the same observation that the rates are not displayed big enough to be noticed clearly..

Yes I agree that most of the drivers do give way in the right direction. Very few trucks and Govt buses cause these issues, but I find half the maxi cabs, vans and private car drivers do not move from the fast lane...

However driving habits have improved significantly over the last few years.. this is my feeling.. maybe true or may not be..

The critical issue is to put an end to vehicles driving in opposite direction.. this is a dangerous thing and the only solution is to confisticate such vehicles for a month.. and then the effect will be better.

Not small font saar..It is the size recommended in the IRC.
Toll related informations should be displayed in the prescribed area;ie Toll Plaza area NOT along the highway.

If you don't intersted to read better don't.Everybody is NOT like you boss.Since the rule says to display,it should be whether it is Indira Gandhi Story or Love Letters.:)

Yes.It displays all. Those interested/want to read they will.I personally seen. Those who don't interested in whats happening around them won't do,they just want to criticize things. If they know it clearly they won't.

All the letters are shown with the size & fonts prescribed as per IRC & MoRTH.
Also, apart from here, the Toll Rates are also published at the Toll Counter too where the Toll has to pay.:)

* I have noticed Trichy getting a mention very frequently throughout NH7 stretch from Bangalore all the way to Madurai, in large fonts even though NH7 does not pass through Trichy. It is indeed very nice to have as it is a very important city in that direction.

* However, we do not see Salem / Erode / Coimbatore having mention along NH45 from Chennai upto Ulundurpet. All vehicles from Chennai to Salem/Erode/Coimbatore take NH45 upto Ulundurpet (it is a good 200+ km stretch) - but throughout, we will see only Trichy, Dindigul, Madurai having a mention on the signboards.

Do we have a reason why different standards are being followed?

http://www.indiainfoline.com/Markets/News/RInfras-4th-road-project-goes-operational/5173991438

Reliance Infrastructure Limited (RInfra) commences operations on its 4th road project connecting Bengaluru and Chennai, part of Golden Quadrilateral. The toll collections and widening operations from 4 to 6 lanes, started from Tuesday June 8, 2011.

The project road is a section of the National Highway - 7 (NH-7) between Hosur and Krishnagiri, which connects Bengaluru and Chennai. The project is being executed on Build Operate Transfer basis and has a concession period of 26 years. The project is awarded to RInfra by NHAI under the competitive bidding process.

Traffic Volume Count (TVC) at proposed toll plaza locations suggests average annual daily traffic (AADT) of around 52,000 PCU’s. The new 6 lanes corridor will be able to manage increased capacity of 72,000 vehicles, once widening is complete .The expansion of the road from 4 to 6 lanes, once completed will additionally ease the current traffic conditions, reduce traveling time and increase driving comfort with 24X7 facilities.

R-Infra will use state-of-the-art Advanced Toll Management Services (ATMS) at the toll plazas to automate tolling and streamline the toll collection. Highway Toll Management System (HTMS) used on the project site will provide CCTVs, speed detectors and other services to monitor traffic flow on the road.

RInfra will introduce Medical, First Aid, Vehicle Rescue Post and Patrolling services at the toll plazas. Road furniture including road signs, pavement markings, crash barriers, delineators that will enhance safety for the users will also be included.

Commenting on this development, RInfra’s spokesperson, said, “Our road projects are conceived to push the country's economic engine. The new developments in the project will bring vibrancy and growth in the present industrial sector and boost the economy of the region. In addition, our focus is to ensure better customer experience with enhanced safety.

Valid point and concern. even in chennai-bangalore road (more than 200km till tirupathur) nowhere you can see salem/erode/coimbatore directions.

Three new flyovers, seven minor bridges, five underpasses for vehicles and eight for pedestrians will come up on Hosur-Krishnagiri National Highway once it is made six lane.

These facilities will reduce travel time and increase driving comfort to commuters. Reliance Infrastructure Limited will provide first aid, vehicle rescue post and patrolling services at toll plaza. State-of-the art rest rooms will be constructed.

The project envisages advanced toll management services which will automate toll collection.

According to NHAI sources in Krishnagiri, two underpasses for vehicles will come up at Hosur, two each at Shoolagiri (one at the entrance and the other at the exit point of the town) and Kuntharapalli.

One of the new flyovers will be built in Hosur urban area and the other at Krishnagiri, the sources said.

One sad result of this 6 laning... the saplings were planted close to the road after the previous four laning will now have to be cut. They had grown well and reached a good height. I hope atleat this time they plant it away from the road so that a future 8 laning will not result in them being chopped

If Reliance is going to take over the Hosur - Krishnagiri stretch after 6 laning it, what about the current contract firm L&T which has done the four laning. How is the govt handling the contractual obligations with 4 laning companies when taking up 6 laning of 4 four lane highways..?

A bridge being constructed across Vettar in Nagapattinam district.

http://www.thehindu.com/news/states/tamil-nadu/article2101678.ece

The Nagapattinam-Kattumaavadi stretch of the East Coast Road (ECR) project of the Department of Highways in the Kumbakonam region is nearing completion.

The 118.6-km project entails three bypasses and a bridge across river Vettar in Nagore. The project include a 10.2-km bypass around Nagapattinam; a 3.1 km bypass around Thiruthiraipoondi; and a 4.8-km bypass around Muthupettai.

All the three bypass roads have been completed, and work on the Vettar bridge is under progress. The bridge that forms part of the Nagapattinam bypass is 463 metre long with 15 spans of 30 metre each.

Fourteen spans have been completed, girders are being placed, and parapet walls are yet to be raised for 10 spans. Approach roads to the length of 50 metres towards Nagore and 100 metres towards Nagapattinam are to be laid.

The project is being implemented at a cost of Rs.198.77 crore, with World Bank fund. The project, with an initial concession period of 36 months, was scheduled for completion by the first quarter of 2008. However, owing to a shortage in sand and labour, it could not be completed as per the schedule. The project is slated for completion by August.

The completion of the Vettar bridge would wean pilgrim, passenger or transit traffic and commercial traffic away from Nagapattinam town.

ajitv & others!

Last week, I drove to Salem from Chennai via Krishnagiri. After taking the left turn at the T Junction on NH7 (krishnagiri) towards Dharmapuri, I found that the quality of the road was so bad.

Moreover, there are unmarked speed breakers which have not been built as per approved specs. I saw many vehicles had to break hard and veer to the sides to avoid toppling.

Who is responsible for this stretch?

I feel that a disaster is waiting to happen here.

Sir,This is true in some locations. The solution you,the road users, can do is there will be a complaint register in each Toll Plaza.Whenever you find such things which is not appropriate or dangerous or not maintaining the highway properly;just stop your vehicle at the Toll Plaza and ask for the complaint book and enter your observations with your address and contact number.Even you can ask a written reply for the action taken by NHAI/Concessionaire in that issue. The issues remains as it is for long, because most of them are unaware of this and they won't even have patience to spend some time to do this exercise. Also, the contact number & address of the concerned PD,PIU will be displayed at Toll Plaza area. You can directly complain also.

I remember one of the forumer in the India Highways thread, making fun of the number of display boards at a Toll Plaza area. You can see a total of 12 such boards will be there.4 will be in Local language (here it will be in Tamil),4 will be in Hindi and the remaining 4 will be in English. All the details are displayed in those boards.

Mr.Kannan,

One clarification, the speed breakers you are mentioning were before or after Dharmapuri ? Speed breakers have been put in the Thoppur Ghat section to avoid vehicles speeding in the area. Increase in spate of accidents in the ghat section made the authorities come up with these....

If the speed breakers were before Dharmapuri, ignore my post.

Even before the four laning, there was speed breakers at this location, but on both sides. Now those on the uphill side were removed and provided only on the downhill side(Left Side while going towards Salem).

Ajit is right. I am referring to the same. Thoppur Ghat section.

They should have a proper warning and marking - It is a NH.

Even the roads are very bad. My car was wobbling and I stopped the car a few times to check if my tyres got punctured.

When you drive at 100+ on a NH, this may lead to a few accidents. They should have avoided curves along this stretch.

Yes.There should be markings & warnings.
Now it seems the mistake is from your, the road user's,side. You may be aware that at Ghat section you need not drive at 100+ kmph.

The quality of road might have got bad because it is the oldest 4 lane section in NH 7 between Bengaluru-Kumari.

I remember Thoppur ghat section was opened in 2002-2003 by BJP gvt well ahead of other NH 4 lane section got ready in TN baring Chennai-Tindivanam.

Before 4 laning, Thoppur ghat road was the biggest accident prone zone in TN, so the then BJP gvt took it on war footing basis and completed it.

Now road has to be relaid.

You are true partially because the resurfacing of the Ghat Section was done 1-2 years back and removed the speed breakers on the uphill side and reconstructed the speed breakers on the downhill side after dismantling the old one.If I remember correctly it was in 2009 but not sure.

We all heard 15% in radia tapes wrt to national highways.

is this how it is got?

The South Zone Motor Transporters Welfare Association (SZMTWA) has urged the State and Union Governments to withdraw the hike in toll rates on the Bangalore-Chennai National Highway-1 (NH-1), effected without prior notice.

Addressing a joint press conference on Saturday, P Gopal Naidu, President, SZMTWA and G R Shanmugappa, President, All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) warned the Government of intense agitation by blocking the NH-1, if the government failed to roll back the hike.

Shanmugappa said that the lorries have been paying a sum of Rs 1,600 for using the road stretch of 700 km (to and fro), which has now been doubled. “The toll for the same 700 km will be Rs 3,200,” he said.

He said that the Government had fixed a toll of Rs 3.45 per km for the existing four-lane road and the same had been doubled now.

“The Centre wants to convert the road connecting Bangalore with Chennai as well as the return route into six-lane highways. It has already awarded the contract to L&T and Reliance group. The companies are already collecting the toll, for the roads which are yet to be constructed,” he said.

He said that though the association met officials from NHAI and others to get the matter addressed, they have been told that since the agreement has been signed, there is nothing much which can be done now.

The Centre, he said, had constructed the road at a cost of Rs 600 crore three years ago and has earned Rs 1,000 crore already through collection of toll. “Now, within a short span, they have awarded a Rs 2,000-crore tender to widen the road to private players,” he pointed out. Shanmugappa stated that about 6,000 lorries ply on this road everyday.

President of the All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) G.R. Shanmugappa has urged the Union government to conduct a CBI probe into the allotment of tender to two private companies to expand the four-lane Chennai to Bangalore national highway into six-lanes.

He told The Hindu that a letter in this regard has been sent to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday through the Road Transport and Highways Department.

He said that they suspect “something fishy” over the allotment of tenders to those companies, which according to him was highly beneficial only for those companies and against the goodwill of road users of that stretch.

The probe should dwell in detail on the intricacies of the contract and officials concerned, when it was signed in 2008 during the tenure of T.R. Balu as then Minister for Road Transport and Highways, the AIMTC President said.

“The contract for Rs. 2,250 crore for laying the stretch of about 335 kilometres – Rs. 750 crore for Athipalli to Krishnagiri and Rs. 1,550 for Krishnagiri to Sriperumbudur,” he said and added that “those companies would end up collecting a minimum toll of nearly Rs. 30,000 crore when the 26-year contract ends.”

He noted that the daily toll collection in that stretch was around Rs. 1.4 crore that makes the average annual collection of as much as Rs. 550 crore.

The companies can easily make up the investment in less than five years, but the contract also gives them the liberty to increase the toll by 10 percent annually, which adds to the burden of road users, he lamented.

While toll charges should be reduced with the increasing vehicle population the charges on that road increases despite an annual 22 percent vehicle increase, Mr. Shanmugappa added.

As the toll collection on that stretch has been increased since June 7, trucks have to pay Rs. 3,148 to make use of the complete stretch against Rs. 1,490 paid before that date, the president said.

“The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has invited us for a final round of talks to talk on this toll issue at Delhi on June 27,” he said.

The AIMTC, that includes all types of light and heavy weight vehicles, will indefinitely boycott the Chennai to Bangalore national highway if the toll was not reduced on that day, he warned.

He also suggested that the Tamil Nadu Government should take the contract for expansion of the six-lane highway and collect reasonable toll from the users.

This would add to the revenue, he suggested and added that a letter on this subject has also been sent to Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa.

Thank you Sir.
But the main issue is the time.I won't get enough time to write long essays as somebody does. What I believe is "A picture says 1000 words".So I'm concentrating on pictures and now on videos too because "A video says 1000+ words".. ;)

Perambalur-Musiri via Thuraiyur route is the shortest route for reaching Karur from NH45 instead of going via Trichy.

Recently i traveled from Salem to Samayapuram via Namakkal route, it takes 35-40min from Salem to Namakkal by car, but from Namakkal to Trichy Tolgate it took 2hrs30min due to heavy sand lorry movements.

While coming back, we took Manachanallur, Thuraiyur, Thammampati, Malliakarai, Vazhapaddi to reach Salem. Even this took sharply 3hours! Once Salem-Vazhapadi 4-lane works are completed, Salem-Trichy via Vazhapadi will take 2hrs 30min by car rather than going via Namakkal, Musiri which have heavy truck movement!

I don't think there is any scope of making Namakkal-Trichy as NH and converting it to 4-lane.

Due to this missing link, Trichy/Central dt cannot enjoy end to end 4-lane highway to Bengaluru like what other cities have!

I think 4 lane of Trichy-Namakkal is possible if Trichy-Thuraiyur-Namakkal is made into NH. This route is 25 km more but much better than the regular Trichy-Musiri-Namakkal route.

^^ Why is it not possible to make Trichy - Musiri - Namakkal 4-lane?

It runs close to kollidam and kaveri and the other side is full of houses of villages

Yes,Trichy-Namakkal road runs close to Kollidam similar to Trichy-Karur highway running close to Cauvery.NH is just widening and strengthening the Trichy-Karur road except for few places were four lane and bye-pass is being laid.I guess it will be same if Trichy-Namakkal becomes NH too. Also sand quarrying happens large scale in this stretch. It is better to convert Trichy-Thuraiyur-Namakkal into NH and upgrade to four lane.

I would say Vazhapadi-Tammampati-Thuraiyur-Trichy toll gate road can be converted to NH and 4-lane instead of Namakkal-Thuraiyur.

This can boost the development of Thamampati-Thuraiyur region of Salem-Trichy district border.

Also the distance is same compared to Salem-Trichy via Namakkal.

Recently travelled on NH67 between Coimbatore and Karur. Though the stretch has been upgraded and has improved considerably, I was disappointed to see that the whole stretch has not been made 4 lane. It is 4 lane only where it passes through towns and then reverts to 2 lane in between.

It is a busy highway and so why not plan for the future. Also, as long stretches of the road are only 2 lane, there is no central median and so driving becomes highly unsafe as people speed on the smooth roads and overtake dangerously.

The road is upgraded to extended two way where you can see minimal road after white line and further filled with sand in both the sides for the entire strech which can be used for over taking easily. For future consideration they might have put four ways inside town.

This strech is not much congested than trichy-karur and tanjore where traffic is much high due to sand mining lorries and many busses between the places hence this strech was converted as four way.But trichy - karur strech is also aproximately higher than 70 percent extended two way due to natural constrains as river and railway track

Hi friends, why there is no four lane road between Coimbatore and Madurai,Trichy? since it is important cities of TN., and also why govt has not planned for four lane between CBE-Madurai, or Cbe- Trichy..since more number of people, vehicles are using in this way.so that the connectivity will be good..????

I think, this upgradation of NH-67 was not planned properly by NHAI. It was once planning for madurai-ramnad 4-lanning and didn't plan for the same along trichy-cbe . Anyhow the road from sulur ( suburb of cbe ) to palladam is almost 4-lane ( I suppose). From which the traffic diverts one along madurai route and another along karur. These sections may have considerably less traffic.

Looks like L&T has commenced ground work on Six laning of NH 46. Sad thing is, well grown trees planted during initial implementation of GQ are getting axed. Not sure why they didn't think about future expansion while planting these. If they had planted them at the extreme ends of the available/ acquired land as a border, they would have been saved now. Also that would help in preventing encroachments in future.

Looks like there will be no bye-pass for Ambur yet.. Atleast there should be some flyover inside the town.
Wish they also upgrade the important intersection of NH 7 & NH 46 at Krishnagiri to avoid halt and go way of traffic from Chennai to Bangalore.

Ajith, Could you throw some details on this ?

Also, any updates on walaja - Poonamallee part ?

Surprising to see contracts are not yet awarded in this stretch which has heavy traffic, when work had started in NH 46 which has comparatively less traffic.

What about Hosur Town elevated part? Is it already 6-lane! If it is 4-lane then we have to see how it will be handled.

IMHO, there can be a green field bye-pass road for Hosur!!

Travelled from Villupuram - Arcot via SH4(Villupuram - Gingee - Chetpet - Arani)

Road in worst condition. Couldn't travel at speed more than 30 km/hr :ohno: Took 3 hrs to cover the distnace of 115 kms

Took SH5(Arcot - Kalavai - Cheyyar - Vandavasi - Tindivanam) on return. The road is wide and good. Though the distance adds by 25 kms, able to cover in 2 hours.

Yes! The urban pop ratio in Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Thiruvanamalai, Villupuram and even Vellore is far less when compared to south TN dts which have a stereotyping that not developed part of the state even among the natives!!

Seems you are not aware of the re-numbering of National Highways in India. If so,Please refer this (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpost.php?p=60997495&postcount=642) (NHs in TN only) which was posted earlier in this thread itself.

long times back while surfing wikipedia i saw the map of renumbered nh giuen even or odd number based on the direction of its path. I didnt know when they changed to new numberimg. have they implemented it? No news came regarding it. If so they have to make changes to thousands and thousands of number board which would sumup a huge amount.
