by Sarah Blackman on Nov 5, 2009
The design for the Deerfields Shopping Centre in Abu Dhabi will be completed today, it has been revealed.
Speaking to Construction Week, RMJM design director Kevin Mclachlan said it took just five months to design the mall.
“I have a great team of 15 people and we are really pleased with the results.”
The shopping centre forms part of the US $272 million (AED1 billion) Deerfields Town Square, a mixed used Victorian style development, which has a built up area of around 300,000 m2.
Construction on the mall is set to commence next year, according to McLachlan.
The square is the flagship development of Mubarak and Brother Property and Financial Investments and is expected to be operational by the second quarter of 2011.
Deer Fields Shopping Centre will consist of 200 shops including a Carrefour Hypermarket.

More than 50 percent of a $190m Abu Dhabi shopping mall slated to open by the end of this year is leased to retailers, it was announced on Sunday.

Deerfields Townsquare, a community mall on the outskirts of Abu Dhabi, is about 60 per cent leased and will open the first phase within weeks.
The mall, located in Al Bahia, a few minutes from Khalifa City A, Al Reef and Al Raha Beach, is targeting an opening date of May 6 for its anchor Carrefour.
It will feature about 162 stores, a family entertainment centre, restaurants and a cinema, with 80,000 square metres of leasable space.
Deerfields carried out market research in surrounding areas to ask residents what they wanted before approaching the brands. A hypermarket, restaurants, family entertainment centre, and high street fashion all came high on the list.
"They based the retail mix on the needs of the community," said Berna Ramey, the marketing director of Deerfields. "They're not going to buy a Gucci or a Fendi every day. They wanted H&M. They wanted Carrefour."
