Dumaguete should strive to improve the other two universities in the city to the same status as SPU and improve SPU to the rank of SU and SU with the world's best schools. I just hope that Bacolod would be able to come up with top notch universities too.

Summary: Mayor Perdices says one of the priorities of a "Macias-Arnaiz-Perdices alliance" would be the P640-million Dumaguete diversion road. It's uncertain when it will be finished. It will be opened in stages. Cementing will cost P400-million, right of way will cost P120-million.

Of course, they may just be promising stuff because it's election time.

Maybe not anymore these days as there are always "new things on the block". The Dumaguete Business Park itself is a good venue to look forward to as it will have plenty of shops and establishments, especially hang out places.

^^ ur right. after many weeks, i have finally passed by the business park. all the nicely designed lamp posts are ready and i noticed a lot just at the side of teletech facing the highway has been covered with blue tarps all around its perimeter. it could be the coffee shop u guys have been talking about. but i could be wrong.. but i just wish it wud be.

the city is now prepared for the international rondalla festival especially ninoy aquino freedom park which all of its acacia trees are decorated with fancy hanging guitar shaped lights. the boulevard has also been decorated with the same stuff.. tita glo will officially open the festival as she will also be inaugurating teletech and robs..

police force will be all around the city during the whole duration of the international rondalla festival.. police posts will be startegically placed all around the city for security.. four (or is it 3??) brand new police cars already arrived to facilitate police mobilization. this will be needed most since international guests will dominate the festival.. this is according to last night's local tv news..

the su-up meet will finally start this feb 22-24 at su!!..

Dumaguete City ready to host 2nd Int'l Rondalla Festival; PGMA invited to attend
By Judaline Flores-Partlow

DUMAGUETE CITY, Feb. 2 (PNA) – Organizers of the 2nd International Rondalla Festival, to be hosted by the Philippines and to be held in Dumaguete City, are unfazed by possible security threats nor bad weather as plans are already in place for the event set on February 19-25.

Negros Oriental Governor George Arnaiz, provincial management committee chair of the festival, during a press conference/launching over the weekend here, shrugged off concerns over the possible postponement of the first-of-its-kind international musical event to be held in this city, like what had happened to the 12th ASEAN Summit in Cebu last December.

“We have prepared for this big event, and it will push through,” said the governor as he disclosed that the provincial government has allocated P3.5-million on top of national funding for the plucked strings festival that shall be participated in by ensembles coming from Europe, Asia, the Arab region, Australia and the Philippines.

The amount, he said, is nothing compared to the international exposure the province will get by hosting a worldwide event that, among others, aims to promote “global peace through musical communication.”

Unless it is something beyond the control of the organizers, such as a natural calamity like a typhoon, Arnaiz said everything has been addressed and only minor concerns need to be finalized within the next couple of weeks.

Strings of Unity

The 2nd International Rondalla Festival comes three years after the first was held in Naga City, also in the Philippines, during the National Arts Month of 2004.

Its major presenters are the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) through the Musicological Society of the Philippines and the province of Negros Oriental in cooperation with the University of the Philippines College of Music.

Dubbed “Cuerdas sa Panaghiusa” or Strings of Unity, the 2nd International Rondalla Festival will be a week-long series of concerts, exhibitions, outreach performances, seminars, interactive rondalla music clinics, instrument-making workshops, repertoire exchange and other special related activities.

Ten rondalla groups from the Philippines and 11 from other countries are attending the festival, which also hopes to establish a true international rondalla/plucked string ensemble network.

Among the foreign groups participating in the festival are Quartette Phoenix (Russia), Rondalla del Recuerdo and La Rondalla Magisterial Procrea (Mexico), Rondanihan (Australia), Three Plucked Strings (Israel), Singapore Rondalla (Singapore), Ryukyu Kingdom Traditional Music and Dance Company (Japan), Chiang Mai Rajabhat University (Northern Thailand), Mahasarakham University (Northeast Thailand), Gitameit (Myanmar) and possibly a group from Iran.

The host country, meanwhile, shall be represented by some of its best rondalla ensembles, namely: Cainta Los Trobadores Jr. Rondalla (Cainta, Rizal), Celso Espejo Rondalla (Las Piñas City), Handuwaran (Tondo, Manila), Kabataang Silay Performing Arts & Rondalla Ensemble (Silay City, Negros Occidental), Kwerdas (Silliman University, Dumaguete City), La Libertad Children’s Rondalla (La Libertad, Negros Oriental), Nabua National High School Rondalla (Nabua, Camarines Sur), Philippine Normal University Rondalla (Manila), Sta. Rita de Cascia Rondalla (Angat, Bulacan), and the Zamboanga del Norte National High School Rondalla (Dipolog City, Zamboanga del Norte).

The participating ensembles, according to Provincial Board Member Mariant Escaño-Villegas who also co-chairs the provincial management committee of the rondalla festival, had to undergo rigid screening to ensure a world-class performance.

Tourism and Trade promotions

Hosting national and international events in Dumaguete City and Negros Oriental is a major gateway to promoting our areas in the fields of culture, tourism and business investments, officials here say.

In its desire to achieve such goal, the provincial government under the Arnaiz administration started last year construction of a multi-million peso convention center that will now be the venue of the 2nd International Rondalla Festival.

With funds coming mainly from the provincial coffers amounting already to more than P150 million, the convention center shall be operational just in time for the rondalla festival, the governor assured.

Amidst public speculation that hotel accommodation in the city will fall short of the requirements, Joy Sojor, chair of the accommodation committee, reassures there will be enough rooms for the participants and other visitors, to include VIPs.

City councilor Manuel Sagarbarria, also chair of the City Tourism Council, said they are expecting diplomats during the festival and while there has been no confirmation yet, the city is already gearing up to accommodate these important personalities.

Dumaguete Mayor Agustin Perdices has expressed optimism over the benefits the international rondalla festival will bring to the city and the province.

“It is priceless, and these (national and international events) are what we need to promote our city and province, and bring in more tourists,” Perdices said.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has been invited to grace the opening of the festival on February 19, the same day the convention center shall be inaugurated, said Arnaiz, who hopes that the Chief Executive will grace both occasions.

Arnaiz said if the President comes, it will be a grand celebration for Dumaguete City as there have been at least four activities lined up.

These would include the inauguration and blessing of the convention center, opening of the 2nd International Rondalla Festival, the groundbreaking of the first-ever multi-million peso Robinson’s shopping mall and the inauguration and blessing of TeleTech’s new call center site at Barangay Calindagan.

Arnaiz challenged travel and tour operators to make the rondalla festival a success by cooperating with the organizers and provide packages that would promote Dumaguete and Negros Oriental.

The governor is optimistic that the rondalla festival shall be a prelude to the hosting of more international events in this City of Gentle People. (PNA)

RLC opens 20th shopping mall in Dumaguete
Sunday, February 4, 2007 of Manila Bulletin

Robinsons Land Corp. (RLC)’s commercial centers division is strengthening its presence in the Visayas region with the opening of its fourth mall in Negros Oriental’s capital, Dumaguete City. Scheduled for completion in the last quarter of 2007, Robinsons Dumaguete is much anticipated by the business community who has taken a keen interest in this shopping development.

This two-level shopping mall development is centrally located along Dumaguete South Road, a busy intersection where commercial establishments are presently proliferating. Schools, public transport terminals, call centers among others are situated nearby, while travel time is a five to 10 minute drive from popular city landmarks Rizal Boulevard, Silliman University, St. Paul’s University, the Provincial Hospital to mention a few.

Local retailers as well as popular store chain operators are expected to open alongside Robinsons Department Store, Robinsons Supermarket, Handyman Do It Center, Robinsons Appliances, Toys R Us, and Robinsons Movieworld. Robinsons Dumaguete, Robinsons Malls’ 20th shopping mall, will also have an al fresco dining area, a kids’ section, health and beauty outlets, service and IT outlets, a drug store, quick serve restaurants, and a bookstore.
Robinsons Malls’ leasing executives are currently entertaining queries regarding the project.

Interested parties can call 683-6100, locals 179, and 816 or (034) 441-1842. For further information, log on to www.robinsonsland.com for more information.

Plenty of things are going on this week, especially with regards to the Dumaguete Business Park. Guys do yo think we need to start a thread for this one? I could take some pictures regarding the plan, as well as the things that will be going on as DBP and IT Plaza takes shape. People definitely need an update, right? And maybe those who have materials regarding the business park can start collecting them and post them whenever the thread is up?

What's your opinion guys?

http://img262.imageshack.us/img262/4531/robslg4.png

The unifinished convention center is really world class, if not for some details. Some glass panels were not yet installed, but it looks great. Really fit for international events. They even install at least 5 clocks with times of different time zones in the world.

Int’l rondalla festival opens

By JUDY FLORES-PARTLOW

DUMAGUETE CITY – Dumaguete City is now host to at least 450 delegates from across the world to the 2nd International Rondalla Festival which President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo opened Monday at the new 1,000-seater provincial convention center.

Security measures have been beefed up by the police with aid coming from the Philippine Army as visitors from Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Latin America converge in this southern capital city from February 19 to 25.

The world’s best rondalla performers are working to come up this year with a global network of rondalla ensembles to promote unity and reconciliation through musical expression, said Provincial Board Member Mariant EscañoVillegas, chairperson of the Provincial Management Committee of the festival.

Dubbed "Cuerdas sa Panaghiusa" or Strings of Unity, the festival will bring matinee and gala performances to residents and visitors alike for four days and four nights in a row, beginning Tuesday.

Six rondalla or plucked string ensembles to be watched in this first-ever international event to be held here are Filipino local and national talents, namely Kwerdas of Silliman University here, and the Children’s Rondalla of La Libertad town in Negros Oriental, about 104.7 kilometers north of here.

Foreign rondalla delegates include the Quartette Phoenix and the Heart of Russia from the former Soviet Union; the Turna Universitaria Complutense De Madrid from Spain; Rondanihan of Canberra, Australia; University of Singapore and Bayanihan Singapore Rondalla; Chiang Mai Rajabhat and Mahasarkham Universities of Thailand and the Ryuku Kingdom Traditional Music and Dance Company of Okinawa, Japan; Gitamcit of Myanmar; and the Three Plucked Strings of Israel.

Two famous rondalla ensembles from Mexico — the La Rondalla Magisterial Procrea and Rondalla del Recuerdo — are also attending the festival.

Other rondalla presenters from the Philippines include the Celso Espejo Rondalla of Las Piñas City; the Kabataang Silay Performing Arts and Rondalla Ensemble from Silay City, Negros Occidental; the Nabua National High School rondalla; the Zamboanga del Norte National High School Rondalla; the Handurawan Ensemble; and the Philippine National University-Rondalla.

The Cuerdas sa Panaghiusa-Strings of Unity is the second rondalla festival to be launched by the National Commission on Culture and the Arts in coordination with the provincial government of Negros Oriental, the Musicological Society of the Philippines, and the University of Philippines College of Music.

Aside from the matinee and gala concerts at the convention center, the different rondalla ensembles will also hold outreach performances in Dumaguete and in various towns and cities in the province.

Farewell performances are scheduled on February 24 at the Rizal Boulevard and on February 25 at the Aquino Freedom Park. (PNA)

Airport upgrading soon

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo vowed to expand the Dumaguete City trunk line airport in the effort of her administration to entice power intensive companies into Oriental Negros.

The President who was in Dumaguete and Bais cities Monday said having a bigger airport is an advantage, adding that the trunk line airport will be equipped with night landing facilities, expanded runway and developed cargo capability.

Arroyo said Oriental Negros is in the middle of the information technology and tourism center under the super regions program of the country.

She also said she is looking forward to the 24-hectare Dumaguete Business Park where Robinsons Dumaguete will soon rise, to rake in government revenues by way of jobs. The park is bigger than Rockwell in Manila. Dumaguete most peaceful in RP

Seldom does it happen that the President and Vice President of the Republic of the Philippines are together in one official event.

But it did happen Monday in Dumaguete City and Oriental Negros because the City of Gentle People "is the most peaceful city in the entire country." President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo said.

She said the city and the countrysides of the province are gearing towards being favorite places of cultural, tourism and sports destinations.

In the past months, a spate of killings in Dumaguete occurred that were believed committed by the so-called "vigilantes," who employed almost identical modus operandi in the murders.

Meanwhile, President Arroyo lauded the provincial government under Gov. George Arnaiz for having constructed a convention center which has now become a favorite cultural destination in Central Visayas.

She described the center as the "crowning glory" of the province, on top of the Galing Pook Award conferred on it in four straight years, and Arnaiz's being cited as the Outstanding Governor of the Philippines.

Arroyo said the province has successfully built the 1,000-seater convention center by using its own funds.

The fast development of the city and the province was the result of political stability, the President said.

She said development should not be hampered by political interest, as she challenged the opposition to help, instead of hurting the administration.

Arroyo and De Castro also distributed land titles to 472 beneficiaries of the socialized housing project in Bais City. Arroyo also formally opened the 2nd International Rondalla Festival, with the heads of delegations, Arnaiz, and Board Member Mariant Escaño-Villegas.*MA/RG

Some of the glass panels, as can be seen in the first three pictures, are not yet installed. The airconditioning units, I suspect, are not yet 100% installed as many people felt warm inside the convention center. For me the airconditioning was just okay.

They have yet to fully finish the convention center, but it is already functional and ready to host other conventions, even international ones. It has a conference room and exhibit area, plus meal and snack area. A hotel will be constructed nearby.

All in all, I'd give a thumbs up to the convention center.

With regards to the Rondalla, I like the Rondalla Ensemble of Silay city, as well as the Rondalla of Australia.

They do not allow cameras with flash inside!

COUNTRY COOKING
Beyond ‘budbud’

By Micky Fenix
Inquirer
Last updated 00:16am (Mla time) 11/16/2006
Published on Page C1 of the November 16, 2006 issue of the Philippine Daily Inquirer

FOR a visitor, no welcome can be better than a taste of what a place is known for. In Negros Oriental, it’s budbud (suman malagkit) with the thickest tsokolate accompanied by a slice of mango.

My hosts in Dumaguete City, the Provincial Tourism Council, made sure that was what I had during the festival they called Buglasan, which was held for a month.

In the evening, food booths were full while entertainment shows were staged at the plaza. Restaurants had a chance to show through their buffet what they had on their menus. As in many places in the country, the main dish was anything grilled. At dinner, under one of the canopies on the plaza grounds, we feasted on barbecued pork and chicken.

Specialties

The Buglasan was also where to get specialties of the place. I was told by a Dumaguete native that Sans Rival was obtained from a shop named, well, Sans Rival. At the table of Isabel Roxas, called Boom by everyone, she kept plying us with her specialties—bibingkang kabog and nangka pie.

Kabog is millet or a grain also known as bird’s seed. Negros Oriental is known for the budbud kabug, a wonderful suman that, unfortunately, has a short shelf life.

Boom converted it to bibingka and the change in the way of cooking, she said, made the millet last longer. And, because the province has an abundance of jackfruit, she thought of making nangka pie.

Her hospitality extended to pasalubong items she packed herself and sent to us through the airline—coconut vinegar, crunchy chicharon, empanada, and pastry rolls with durian and nangka filling.

Those were the sidelights of my trip. I was in Dumaguete to judge a cooking contest. “Lutong Garbo sa Oriental Negros” was a competition among municipalities and cities for the best dish the chosen cooks could muster. No fusion. Just plain cooking using indigenous ingredients.

Good start

What a great and correct way for a first-time cooking competition in the province. Each entry also had to list the cost of the dish for a family of four. The low cost of each dish was unbelievable to those of us who live in pricey Manila.

Having lived and worked in Cebuano-speaking Cagayan de Oro, many of the terms were familiar—pasayan for shrimp and dabong for bamboo shoots. But there was more to learn such as paliya for ampalaya, espiso nga gata for coconut cream, bisol for a kind of gabi (taro) and tugnos for salted minute dilis (anchovy). Two contestants used the scientific names of the main ingredients, which puzzled at first until I saw that solanum melongina was eggplant and cardisoma was a kind of crab.

In competitions, learning is always two-way. Contestant cooks were told ways to improve their procedures while organizers learn a thing or two about refining rules from the judges (they included Patricia Chiong Sr., vice president of Air Philippines, and Jessica Avila, proprietor of Chika-an Restaurant in Cebu City).

The judges, in turn, learned new terms and ways of cooking. The two contest days also proved to be an excellent occasion for my research.

Buro was a novelty for me. While the word was familiar, indicating a fermented product such as rice with shrimps or mangoes in a pickling solution, what looked like fresh fish was pointed out as the buro.

The cook from Bacong municipality said the fish was packed in salt and left that way, some for as long as a year. You couldn’t tell from the way it looked. The trick is to wash it several times before using and, for the contest, it was cooked in coconut milk.

Preference

Coconut milk and cream were used by most of the contestants, indicating the cooking preference of the province. And if they used chicken, it was the native variety, tastier but tougher and so needed time to cook through simmering.

The other preference was the use of charcoal or wood to cook the food. When a contestant was asked if that contributed to the taste and smell of the cooking, she said it was only because food cooked faster that way.

For someone who knows only how to cook with liquefied petroleum gas and electricity, that was a surprise.

The first-prize winner was Spicy Cardisoma from Sibulan town. My hosts said the town was known for its land crab that could be caught at the shoreline so the townsfolk didn’t even have to buy their special ingredient.

The crab was in season during the competition. It was cooked the way pinais is done, meat extracted, mixed with buko, onions, garlic, bell pepper, herbabuena (mint), ginger, salt and sugar.

The crab meat was returned to the carapace and placed in banana leaves then tied. The pieces were steamed on a bed of lemon grass with buko juice and coconut milk added in at the last minute.

Another information that was important was that the crab concoction was eaten with either camote, gabi or saba.

Second prize went to the municipality of Bacong for its steamed chicken in coconut milk. Third was the guinataang pasayan from the Amlan municipality.

The three top placers proved to the other contestants that time and effort should be spent on the cooking rather than the presentation. In any cooking competition, taste counts for a lot.

Aside from the ongoing 2nd International Rondalla Festival at the Convention Center, another international event / gathering is now taking place. It is the 2-day 10th EAST ASIAN FORUM ON NURSING SCHOLARS. It is now being opened at the Luce Auditorium. Participating countries, as far as i can recall are: Japan, Singapore, Taiwan, North Korea, South Korea, Australia, US, Uganda, Hongkong, the Philippines, etc.. Some of the participants are being housed at South Seas Resort and at Bahura Resort and Spa. Participants are expected to be seen at the convention center as they will also watch the rondalla shows.

Indeed, Dumaguete and Oriental Negros is very capable of hosting international events now that it has world-class facilities.

You're already amazed at the Convention center at the Capitol area. Wait when the convention center at the Dumaguete Business Park rises. I think it will be bigger.

The renderings of the development plan of the Dumaguete Business Park indicates at least three medium to high rise buildings, with a high-rise hotel at the middle portion. That same plan also indicates that Robinsons Place Dumaguete will be "gargantuan" and will consist of at least three buildings.

@Nicko: That's Teletech Building I. Teletch Building II isn't finished and not inaugurated yet.

I was awakened when the sunlight fell on our tent making it a hothouse, and came out to see the camp in the daylight, a sprawling park-like tract of land. Forest Camp seemed to me the most beautiful campsite resort in the country. The camp has uneven terrain, vibrant with trees and coconuts. There was a creek running through it, feeding two man-made swimming pools. Over it was a hanging bridge. Footpaths inlaid with stones sliced through the tingly grass carpet. There was an area where you can set up tents, a common bathroom and toilet, and areas where you cook and grill. But there is also a restaurant at the center of the site. There were also nice, comfy cottages for those who want to straddle between modern comfort and nature. But the centerpiece remains to be a magnificent tree house. At the end part of the site, the area sloped upwards towards a forest, where you can trek and then further is already mountain.

Forest Camp is located eleven kilometers west of Dumaguete in Valencia Town. The 2.2-hectare facility is an oasis of natural wonders and offers the best in outdoor experiences like nature and adventure treks to Casaroro and Mount Talinis, camping, and horseback riding among others.
Apart from two large nipa guesthouses, a treehouse, four cottages, a dormitory, and a backpackers’ den, it also has a conference hall, a campers’ site, and a pool fed by natural waters cascading down Mount Talinis. The backpackers’ den can accommodate up to 10 people, while the dormitory holds up to 20 students. Its main hall can accommodate up to 250 people and may be resrved for private functions like conferences or wedding receptions.

Last night was the culminating activity of the 41st College Week of the SU College of Mass Communication and as a treat, they invited ABS-CBN's StarCinema Producers and Film Makers. Keynote guests were Raymond Lee and Emmanuel de la Cruz. Both of them made the multi-awarded indie films, "Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros" and "Sarong Banggi".. They conducted a Symposium on writing and producing Independent films of which I was fortunate enough to attend. It was held at The Luce auditorium. They also screened both movies. It was great.

FU Hosts Annual Digital Expo ‘07
February 18-24, 2007 issue – Dumaguete MetroPost

http://img166.imageshack.us/img166/1185/70723011sj5.jpg

More companies from outside Dumaguete have confirmed their participation in the two-day 2007 Digital Expo that will kick off on Thursday, Feb. 22 at the Sofia Soller Sinco Hall at the Foundation University main campus.

Conceptualized and organized by the FU Department of Computer Studies headed by Dae Habalo, the Digital Expo will showcase state-of-the-art information technology infrastructure endorsed by various IT companies.

There will also be a forum and some lectures by IT experts.

Edison Rivera, a Japan-trained programmer of NEC Cebu, will speak on object-oriented programming and 4G. Heads of offices of business process outsourcing (BPO) companies will tackle other issues like IT Intelligence, and will also do product demonstrations.

The Animation Division of Entheos IT hopes to provide the guests with opportunities for a hands-on, interactive role with the tools of the trade. Artists and art enthusiasts will get the chance to see the leap-frogging benefits with creative digital animation from the traditional hand-drawing.

The IT Quiz Bowl has become another much-awaited activity during the FU Digital Expo. “So far, 10 high schools have confirmed their participation in the Metro Dumaguete Inter-High School Digital Quiz Bowl,” said Tonton Cena, Quiz Bowl coordinator.

The 10 high school teams will compete for P10,000 for the champions, P7,500 for the 1st Runner-Up, P5,000 for the 2nd Runner-Up. Trophies, medals, and Certificates of Participation to the schools, the contestants, and their coaches will also be given.

This year’s Digital Expo is expected to draw a bigger crowd than last year as the participating multinational BPOs and IT companies will also be conducting their respective job fairs to fulfill their manpower requirements.

Among these are SPI Technologies, People2Outsource Call Center, and Quickbooks.

Cebu-based Timex, Manila-based Liteware Computers Apple Macintosh exclusive distributors, and homegrown C&L Lending Co. are also joining the list of exhibitors.

Trader Vows To Help Bamboo Industry
By Victor L. Camion
February 11, 2007 issue – Sun Star Dumaguete

CHINA-based trader has promised to provide technical assistance to improve the Bamboo industry in Negros Oriental.

Madame Coosje Hoogendoorn, director-general of the International Network of Bamboo and Rattan in Beijing, China, however, clarified that there is no market for Bamboo industry in China.

Hoogendoorn was in Dumaguete City to participate the three-day 5th National Bamboo Conference here.

She was the keynote speaker during the event held at the Bamboo Hall, Levisville Garden, St. Paul University, Dumaguete City on February 7 to 9.

"There are lots of Bamboo in China," said Madame Coosje Hoogendoorn.

She added that the International Network of Bamboo and Rattan traders can also help local traders promote its products to other countries in the world.

It can also provide modern technology to develop the local Bamboo Industry to have the international standard, so that it can compete globally, she said.

Hoogendoorn further said they can help Bamboo farmers to produce high quality of Bamboo.

Meanwhile, Dumaguete based-Bamboo trader Frans Kleine Koerkamp said the bamboo variety that has a high export quality is the "Kawayan tungkan."

Koerkamp is a chairman of the board of Buglas Bamboo Institute in Dumaguete City.

In a press conference held at Dumaguete Suite Inn Monday evening, Koerkamp assured that Negros Oriental has sufficient supply of bamboo for export.

Hoogendoorn, in the same forum, emphasized the important role of the Bamboo industry in the fulfillment of the Millennium Development Goals.

With the theme, "Kawayan: Pangkabuhayan at Pangkalikasan" an output of the conference, Organizing Committee member Dr. Cecile Genove said, is the forgoing of a proposed agenda for the development of the bamboo industry in the Philippines.

The event is jointly initiated by the Provincial Government of Negros Oriental, the First Gentleman Foundation and the Philippine Bamboo Foundation.

It was also assisted by government line agencies.

Other speakers, in the conference, were Dr. Wang Ge of the Department of Science and Education in Beijing, China; Romualdo Sta. Ana, president of the Philippine Bamboo Foundation; and Rene Guarin, director of the Philippine Social Enterprise Network.

Its developer promised the President it will develop the beach area and connect it to the famous Rizal Boulevard. source (http://www.visayandailystar.com/2007/February/21/negor3.htm)

are they going to extend towards the sea? hope no one is against it. currently the runway is 1900+ meters... a 2500 meter runway would be good for airbus A330's. are they going to build a new terminal? lets find out... plus an ILS system not just for night landing but for zero visibility landing too.

They are going to contruct a new superhighway soon from Sibulan to Bacong. That makes the existing highway passing through the airport redundant. With this, it would be possible to close the existing highway and extend the airport towards the mountains.

there were three venues of the rondalla concert at the boulevard last night. in front of DBP rizal blvrd, in front of shakey's and bethel and the third is at cafe tourismo.. i guess the biggest crowd had to be in front of shakey's and bethel. too bad im not able to go and see the final concert at the freedom park.. all countries will perform.

Ritch,

What about the beachfront portion of the property? Apparently, the pic only shows up to the Convention Center. That property extends all the way up to the beach. There are many houses along the beachfront. I heard there will be a hotel there but I don't remember seeing it in the layout.

It would be nice if the boulevard will be extended all the way there. And there will be a good view from the convention center to the beach.

WOW, thanks for those pics ritche. Very informative. Here are some of my thoughts:

- From the map, we can now see that the Robinsons rendering is actually a view from the highway. I previously thought it was the view from Teletech. But isn't it a bit strange to have the main facade at the narrow end of the mall?

- The roads are wide by Dumaguete standards, but I don't think they are wide enough if they intend for this to be Dumaguete's new central business district. The main roads through Cebu Business Park are 30m wide, and they still clog with traffic during rush hour.

- Is that just open grassy area behind Robinsons? Hurrah! Planned open space is appreciated.

- If I'm not mistaken, these roads are nicely lines up with consideration for cardinal directions. The main road leads straight east from the highway, and the road branching off from it leads straight north. It will look nice and clean on a map. :)

- "Mixed use residential"? I'm apprehensive about that, but I'll reserve judgment until I know more. I hope those are at least mid-rise aparments, not just high-end houses.

- "Transit station services"? Could this be the new South Jeep Terminal? I hope so, it's the perfect location.

Ganahan ko sa topview-look sa Robinson's Dumaguete!

Daghan sia'g mga semi-circular or oval structures.

*************************************************************

Ultravision has got to be one of the worst movie houses I've been to. Lots of rats scowl the place. And there are lots of weirdo gay people there. Sometimes, if you watch a movie alone...an individual (laki pagyud) would sit right next to you ug mu-offer pagyud sila'g pagkaon nimo (even if you don't even know the guy). :puke: Furthermore, the buildings itself is quite creepy. :ohno:

Ever Theater, on the other hand, feels a bit safer. My only complaint is their bathrooms. They don't provide a proper washing area. :bash: Aside from that, their urinals are the cubicle-with-canal-like-drains-type ones rather than the usual urinals one sees in malls.

[Well, I'm sort of a neat freak and I can't stand such low-levels of hygene.]

*************************************************************

Anyway, it would be good if Robinson's would have those few-seats-per-screen concept like the ones at Araneta Center's Gateway Mall so that each cinema screen hall don't get to be largely empty as is the case of Ultravision's Cinema 1. It would also be viewer-friendly because it evokes a more homey ambience.

I don't know but if you look at it from above with those separate roofs, they are separate buildings, right?

@Coffee: I think that green area is space for future expansion.

I've seen another rendering of the Dumaguete Business Park showing the heights of the buildings. I saw at least three mid to high rise buildings. One is a hotel. Probably that is the four star hotel that they were mentioning, which probably would be the Bayview Park Hotel Dumaguete.

These mixed use residentials would probably be condominiums and retirement homes.

no, thats just one building :) it just has multiple roofs on top of, as i can judge basing on the drawing, a concrete roof deck..it nice to see the green patch of land though, para di gaanong concrete at mainit ang area :approve:

if thats the final robinsons place design, basing on the scale (ie width of road stated as 20m), the malls footprint would be about 100m x 200m..im interested with the rear part though..it looks as if there are "trees" on seemingly "rooftop rotunda" ..promising indeed! :approve:

Am not sure if only three because the least number of screens a Robinsons mall usually has is four. Well if only three, then maybe that would be enough for Dumaguete. But considering that Dumaguete Business Park is a prime development with credible locators, then it might be good to put up more than three considering that the area will have a residential area, and high end subdivisions are nearby. But then again, there's always room for expansion should they decide to open only three.

http://www.negroschronicle.com/final/current/pres_vpres.jpg

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo Monday said that the provinces of Oriental Negros and Bohol will be at center stage in the development of the country’s super regions because Bohol will be the center of tourism while Dumaguete City will be the center of business outsourcing and information technology.

For the few times since they assumed office, both the President and Vice President themselves, were together in a provincial sortie, and sat down together in a press interview, which was held in Dumaguete City last Monday at the newly inaugurated P140-M provincial convention center.

On the other hand, Vice President Noli de Castro explained how an improved economy has trickled down to the benefit of the man in the street. Also joining the print-radio- TV interview with the President and Vice Pesident, were Trade Sec. Peter Favila , DOT Sec.Ace Durano and Gov. George Arnaiz. They were interviewed by Ely Dejaresco, editor-publisher of the Negros CHRONICLE and Melimore Saycon, anchorman of the radio DYGB public affairs program "Tuganan"

President Arroyo also inaugurated the 24-hectare business park in Dumaguete city, conceivably bigger than Rockwell in Makati, which will house the new Robinsons super mall, retirement homes, business outsourcing infrastructures and an integrated bus terminal, among other amenities.

The bright prospects of converging business outsourcing and information technologies like call centers is promising based on those who signified their intentions to open in the new business park similar to that of the Ayala business park in Cebu.

The business park here is owned by the Julio Sy family.
Power intensive requirements is answered by the geothermal sources here; labor intensive requirements is answered by the tested and quality products of the four universities and colleges here; and job creating in the sense that thousands of personnel will be needed when the business outsourcing conglomerates will open.

They will follow the pioneer which is Teletech, whose sprawling headuarters now manned by over a thousand workers was inaugurated by President Arroyo last Monday.

AIRPORT AND PORT.
Dumaguete's airport in Sibulan and the port area will be expanded this year. The airport will be widened and equipped with more night landing facilities. The port is now undergoing the construction of more RORO facilities and soon the passenger terminal aside from the newly refurbished passenger waiting shed which was given a P3- million face lift.
Japhura plants for the production of bio fuel not bio ethanol will be produced in mass in the hinterlands of Oriental Negros, she said. Gov Arnaiz allayed fears of dislocation on former rebels now settled in Tamlang Valley.

International events here: Tourism’s baptism of fire
by: Ely Dejaresco

PGMA at the Oriental Negros Convention Center

Oriental Negros and Dumaguete city
passed with modest but flying colors in
TOURISM, in their joint public and private sectors capability of hosting international events such as the just-concluded 2nd International Rondalla Festival and the ASEAN nurses convention.

Very shortly , another international convention is coming and that is the OFWCongress of Negrenses which will be held anytime this year. Felverish presparations are now underway anew, and there is no more stopping?.We will not rather say it, but we hope, TOURISM has indeed taken off here in Oriental Negros.

What made it big? The President and his Vice President did!
Well, imagine the triple whammy: blessing of the biggest call center, ground breaking of the biggest mall and biggest business park bigger than Rockwell of Makati, right in Calindagan, the inauguration of the first and biggest P140-million convention center built by people?s money; and capped by the launching of the 2nd International Rondalla Festival , the ASEAN nurses convention and coming is the OFWCongress, the first homecoming of Negrenses all over the world!
If tourism will still not take off with these "bigat-ten" events then we do not know what will.......

Guys, we have a new thread under the Philippine Projects on the Rise. The link is here (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=446569).

I think Dumaguete Business Park deserves a thread of its own due to its magnitude. And its also good to hear what other people think of this project. I am sure, though, that this project will have a website of its own soon.

I hope you can contribute.:)

Basay airport feasible but needs ATO expertise

The proposed airport in Basay town in the southernmost part of Oriental Negros can be realized but needs millions of pesos in funds and the expertise of the Air Transportation Office, Rodolfo Perez, area center manager, said during his recent visit to Dumaguete City. cont'd (http://www.visayandailystar.com/2007/March/01/negor4.htm)

Re: The planned airport in Bais (or Siaton)

I think having airports in these areas wouldn't yet be needed given that Negros Oriental's primary urban economy is, perhaps, only Dumaguete. Both Bais City and Siaton do not have a large enough air traffic market same way Dumaguete is capable of supporting. In fact, Dumaguete's air traffic market ain't that big either. It can only sustain three daily departures to Manila. That's it!

Why not expand the Dumaguete-Sibulan Airport, instead. I honestly believe its runway can be extended indefinitely since it protrudes towards the sea. An expansion of the current facilities at Dumguete-Sibulan Airport (DSA) is more economically feasible/practical than a brand-new facility in Siaton or Bais City.

Since these Siaton and Bais City are both quite far from Dgte., it wouldn't be practical. Moreover, Dumaguete has a, relatively, poor public transportation network that cannot possible augment the shuttling of passenger traffic from such places to Dumaguete.

Re: Your Map

If the runway extension involves the lengthening towards the left of the maps, doesn't that mean that the runway will form a crossroad the national highway? If so, how's this gonna work? Will there be an underpass for the national highway or will it be diverted somewhere?

If you're in Manila where did you see it? Was it published in a newspaper? I saw it printed in the front page of one of the national dailies.

I'm referring to the layout you posted.

Re. Extension of Airport Runway

I think there will only be limited extension to the sea. Airport has already been extended many many years back. I personally saw the extension work done then. And we had the opportunity to use a boat and go to the tip of the runway.

A viable recourse would be to extend the airport across the highway and and divert traffic to another highway inland. Sure, many houses will be affected. It's been years that I've heard talk of a highway that will be pass through Magatas area. Maybe, the realization of this is the highway which the city is currently working on.

Re. Siaton

I think it would be an ideal site for an airport. The Bondo site is sparsely populated and very spacious. It can accomodate more than 2 parallel runways. Add to that a deep harbor in Bonbonon. Many big fishing boats dock here. If an airport and a seaport will be build there, wow, such would be a very good site for an industrial zone.

Isn't it that many years back Siaton was considered for an American airbase? But it was opposed by then Cong. Lamberto Macias, the father of the Cong. Dodo. I could not vouch for the veracity of this info. But I remember reading it somewhere and heard talk about it.

But maintaining a Siaton airport and a Dumaguete airport at the same time may not be economically feasible.

I think they should just extend it to the sea. There's no way to extend it inland without making a huge mess. The road that runs along the edge of the runway is THE main road through Dumaguete City and Negros Oriental. Asking commuters to move all the traffic to a new road (that hasn't been built yet) would be a pretty big disruption.

Here's what I gather from my research: The runway length of the Dumaguete Airport is currently 1,870 m. To accommodate the next larger class of aircraft (such as the Boeing 747), we'd need a runway length of 2,430 m. There are entire airports build on man-made islands and reclaimed land... it seems reasonable to reclaim 600 meters of land to extend the runway.

doing it towards inland wud mean distractions to traffic. that area is usually traffic during rush hours. if disrupted, it wudnt look gud. and if making a diversion way in magatas is an option, i dnt think many wud like it. its far.. on the other hand, if they hav to extend it towards the sea, they should also at least widen the runway. i just wonder how wud they do that. the land where the airport is currently sitting isnt that big enough.. or is it?.. and doing the airway expansion towards the sea wud cost much. tanon strait is deep. and more to that, many issues concerning the environment wud usually come up. and this is the part that i dont like. this can sometimes prolong or even, at worst case scenario, cancel the project. just like the seaport terminal. frustrating.

You are right sir, lengthening the runway is the option here...we dont need another new airport or else it wud end up of no use....just like the overpass at silliman! imagine that... i dont know why some town/city wants an airport here.

anyway the president says(politics blah blah) that she is for the expansion for the airport, well because for industries(semiconductors, etc..) which needs cargo transport. and big cargo planes requires long runway... thats why DSA(the only operating civilian airport of the province which has 3 fights daily to mnla) only needs lengthening. an extension to the left of the map is okay.. the city is planning for a diversion road, and thats a solution maybe. also, an extension of the runway towards the sea, a couple of meters so not to disrupt ecological issues. time will tell, that depends on political will. :)

I think extending the airport towards the sea would not be ecologically beneficial. The damaged it brought when it first extended some years back was the scouring of the nearby beaches. The sea current which traversed horizontally as to the direction of the airport was blocked as a result of the extension. Thus, the sea was redirected towards inland and it consumed some of the beaches. A testament of this is Silliman Beach, which is the neighboring beach of the airport. Tales have been told of people who used to go to Silliman Beach and enjoyed swimming there. Now, garbage sometimes got stucked there as the airport have blocked the flow. The beach is now just a shadow of its old self. If such plan is raise up, I'm sure environmentalists and Silliman Marine Lab scientists would howl in protest.

If the airport will be extended inwards, new roads will be needed as it will cross the path of the National Road. My suggestion is that a new airport should be built that is long and big enough to handle large aircrafts. The current airport would be temporarily functional until the construction of the new airport is done. Then, the old airport would converted into an export processing zone or a business park. It already has the advantages as it is already developed. Clark, Pampanga can be a perfect model for this. The question is that would it be economically viable?

Portal Bldg spaces up for grabs
Written by John Boaz T. Lee
Thursday, 22 February 2007

Two tenants reserved spaces for the future Portal West Building. One is what Vice President of Finance and Administration Cleonico Fontelo described as a "big player in the business industry." The other is the Sted's Convenience Store.

"It is confirmed that Sted's will be renting about one third of the entire Portal West Building first floor, which is currently under construction," Fontelo said. The identity of the other tenant could not be disclosed to tWS.

For the rest of the spaces available in the four-storey building, he said, "All the other spaces are up for grabs and we are currently reviewing offers from various groups."

Ed Du, owner of Sted's, which is known locally for its brand of convenience store cum food kiosk centers, opted to keep his plans for the new outlet a secret. However, he revealed, "It will be one of a kind, designed to give students more readily available choices in the campus."

"I believe, at this point in time, we have contributed in our own small way to the students' stay here, and our vision is really to make Sted's part of every student's life," Du explained.

Wow, the present density of buildings and people in the city are not yet that high, and they are building a business park, a planned urban development. This in itself will be a magnet for investments and people to resettle here, but the good thing is this is planned. I see that there is a possibility of putting up another business park in the city once the Dumaguete Business Park is already loaded, so that would make Dumaguete City mostly a planned city, quite unlike other cities in the country, making it very attractive to settle and live in, although prices may be high. But that's what you would pay for order and beauty, plus being a world class city.

i myself wudnt want to have it extended towards the sea knowing that it wud hav adverse effects. plus, silliman marine lab is just a stone's throw away from the airport. one bad move, then dumaguete will have to once again deal with silliman! its has always been like this here and im sure people are used to this.

anyway, if another airport wud be built, where will it be?.. and i dnt think it wud be economically viable. gasto kaayo. for now, i just think the upgrading wud just have to be minor. major one's will need serious planning..

Silliman University Marine Laboratory

Silliman University Marine Laboratory's (now known as Institute of Environment and Marine Sciences) program on marine protected areas was recently adjudged as the Best Higher Education Institutions (HEI) Research Program in the country by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) during the awarding ceremony at the Philippine International Convention Center, Manila. Silliman received P1 million after it bested 11 other entries with its entry, “The Marine Laboratory Program on Marine Protected Areas”, which details the efforts of the SU Marine Laboratory.

Unknown to many, SU Marine Lab pioneered the establishment of marine protected areas (MPAs) in the country. The program on marine protected areas has the longest record of research, extension and development work on the subject of marine protected areas (MPA) among academic institutions in the country, having been the first to establish an MPA (Sumilon Island) in 1974. It has established 20 MPAs for fishery enhancement and biodiversity conservation in the Visayas and Mindanao and has extended to 61 others in the form of habitat and resource assessments, biodiversity enhancement, and capacity building.

Though it doesn't have the media publicity mileage compared to other research institutions, in a low-profile way it has contributed significantly to this country. It helps maintain the biodiversity of Tubbataha, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the beaches and diving sites in Bohol, Cebu, and Mindanao which resulted in the influx of tourists inclined in diving, and it was one of the first to respond during the Guimaras Oil Spill.

The country's first marine protected area was the Sumilon Island in Cebu in 1974 but due to politics (the Abines, notoriously known for being a warlord and for his illegal fishing business) the program was aborted. The first successful community managed protected area was the Apo Island in Dauin, Negros Oriental, world reknowned for the abundance of its marine life. related story here (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=306989&page=6) It has become the model which was then replicated in other areas in this country and abroad. Today, tourists from all over the world have come to dive in this island as it is one of the world's best diving sites. In fact, a giant replica of the Apo Island was created at the world's biggest aquarium, the Shedd Aquarium of Chicago. It has now become a permanent fixture in that aquarium and it advertised to the whole world the abudance of marine resources in our country.

Oriental Negros Provincial Convention Center, Capitol Area
Dumaguete City, Oriental Negros
February 19, 2007

Thank you very much, Governor Jojo Arnaiz, Mrs Arnaiz, congratulations for this beautiful convention center and for hosting this important rondalla festival.

Vice President Noli De Castro; Mayor Toting Perdices; vice governor and other officials of the Province of Oriental Negros; our Cabinet members and other national officials who are here with us today; delegates; participants of the Second International Rondalla Festival of Oriental Negros, my dear brothers and sisters.

We can see the rapid growth of Dumaguete and the whole of Oriental Negros. This P140 million convention center is borne out of the initiatives of the provincial government. Governor Arnaiz also said that the rubberized track oval in Perdices Coliseum will be done by June. Congratulations for a coliseum like this!

This convention center is very relevant to your objective of becoming the favorite destination for tourism activities, convention tourism, nature adventures, and for your goal of capping the title of convention and sports destination. This is very relevant to our tourism super region here in Central Philippines.

A while ago we inaugurated the new Teletech and broke ground for the Dumaguete Business Park, including the Robinsons Mall. The achievement of your objectives will not be far behind.

And in order for Oriental Negros progress to continue as well as the rest of the Philippines, we are avowed not to let politics get in the way of the economy. We are avowed to reinforce the economy with firm political stability. We see the political campaign taking its course in a manner reflecting a full fledged Philippine democracy. This should convince one and all that freedom reigns beside a free market in our country.

The resiliency of our economy as well as our political system has been tried and tested through several crises and storms. The Filipino always rises from controversy to shine in excellence and hard work. We shall prove it once more this year. We call on the opposition not to hurt, but to help grow the economy.

Our national agenda is focusing on creating jobs, stabilize prices of goods and bring benefits of progress to all Filipinos.

Progress in our country comes about through the unity of our leaders in the barangay, as well as our mayors and governors.

Your capital city, Dumaguete, which is called a university town and has a very beautiful Rizal Boulevard, is one of the peaceful cities in the country. Congratulations!

And since you are the host of this international event today, such as this 2nd international rondalla festival starting today, you are showing the love of Oriental Negrenses towards culture and the arts.

Oriental Negros is a university town, but today you have shown beyond being a university town, you are a town of great culture, love for culture.

The coming here in the Visayas of the strings is one opportunity towards interfaith, interculture, and intercivilization unity through music. What we are doing today, our guests, is an example of interfaith, inter-culture, inter-civilization togetherness.

Our confidence towards the local officials of Oriental Negros is strengthened because of this convention center. We know that this is the “crowning glory” of all your accomplishments, that is why you won four “Galing Pook” awards. Congratulations to your Province!

But it is not only government projects. There are projects from the private sector. The new Teletech is a big symbol of progress not only here in Oriental Negros, but also in our country in information and communications technology industry, and the growth in our economy.

Because of your progress, Dumaguete and the whole province of Oriental Negros are now at the forefront in terms of renewal and development that is happening in our country. Congratulations!

And so on this day, it's a very rare occasion that the president and the vice president are together in one place. Not because we don't like each other, we like each other very much. But anywhere in the world, the president and the vice president are supposed to avoid being together, but today we are together. That's how important Oriental Negros is. That's how important Dumaguete is. That's how important this international Rondalla festival is to the cultural life of our country.

Daghan salamat ug congratulations sa inyong tanan!

Guys, did you know that Guihulngan is included among the more than 10 cities that will soon have their plebiscite for cityhood? I think that will win landslide. So we will soon have a new city, making 6 the number of cities in Oriental Negros.

How in hells chance can McDonald's be completed in 22 days?!

I think, come March 29, McDonald's will only have a soft opening. Its second and third floors will continue to be under-construction.

Btw, what do you think the third floor will be used for? supply-storage?

The Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce in Oriental Negros headed by Alex Sy reiterated President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's call to take a bigger stake in domestic investment, and take advantage of the country's economic gains.

"As long as the economy is stable, it is the best time to invest," Sy said, citing the important role of local investors in the economic growth of towns and cities. He said local investors are important because they will affect the livelihood of the masses. Sy lauded one of President Arroyo's centerpiece projects -- the Nautical Highway - calling it one way of cutting down the expenses of transporting products between islands.

Some and many peoples called Kabangkalan but the correct name is or spelling is Kabankalan. Even when i'm a kid I called them Kabangkalan. I've been always passed by there from Bacolod to Kabankalan going to Candoni, Sipalay, and Cauayan but I can't go to their Gaisano City there. Hope this summer I can go around of this mall.

Although not as distinctly sweet and big compared to its Baguio counterpart strawberries, it still takes pride in its organic nature. Grown naturally completely without the application of artificial fertilizers, it has a very distinct earthly-sweet-sour fresh taste that is at the same time, very juicy! Now thats what you call farm fresh and natural! Sold in supermarkets here for only P60 for every 250 grams. Not a bad deal since every box consists of 40-60 pieces!!

^^ yep ritch, i do think that our McDonald's here will have McCafe.. aside from the color scheme of the posts, i have seen the ceilings of the second level having those fancy circular designs that are similar to McCafe's ceilings in Bacolod.. and i think it will also have a play area for the kids..

And another good news for us "night shifters" out there!.. finally, we will not have to stay stucked between chowking and dunkin donuts! JOLLIBEE-Perdices is now open 24 HOURS!!!.. isnt that great?.. i do hope McDonald's will do the same..;) yay!!!

and talking about KFC or Starbucks, i dnt know about that. all i know is that there will be two giant chain stores that will open in portal west building according to the SU BOT but they never really spilled it out.. but im sure one of those will be National Bookstore. our city needs one desperately! silliman bookstore is complete but the prices of the books are a bg turn off to students!..

We were walking by the construction site the other day and saw them lay out the McDonald's letters for their sign on the ground outside, so I just had to take a few snapshots with my cell phone.

^^ yep coffee.. our mcdonalds here is pretty controversial.. well, as far as the foreign expats living here are concerned. u have to c it for urslef at www.dumagueteinfo.com, mcdonalds thread. many expats are arguing about its pros and cons.. it even came to a point of having a heated discussion. nalingaw rkog basa.. in fact, the owner of the site, who apparenlty is in full favor of it conducted a poll about mcD's coming here whether if ur in favor to it or not or u just really don't give a damn at all. the thing is, these expats are here basically because the want to get away from the too industrialized cities. they came here because they loved the "old-wordl charm" and the very good environment.. -char!- and having a mcD's here, as they see it, would ruin everything they wanted here.. they don't want dumaguete to get too industrialized, commercial, and urban.. well, wat can they do??? its already here! well, as of the moment, i don't see anything about mcD's ruining or disturibing dumzville's ambience.. and of course, im not against it.. duh?! haayz.. at least these foreign expats are concerned.. and they just dont get it why we pinoy luv "fatfood" outlets..

^^ that's because dumaguete has uber-cool nightlife....

its a university town and college students love to have an all nighter...

well.. kinda true. bt for my case, i take advantge on these 24 hour fastfood chains for me to stay all night till morning to study and make my papers.. the food keeps me up.. heheh.. most students do these and i think its the target market of these stores now.. in fairness for a pizza restaurant, shakey's even close sometimes at 2am and they still get customers till that time.. not students though.. d mi ka afford.. mga foreigners lang..:) :)

Lance Gokongwei, President and CEO of Cebu Pacific and Robinsons Land Corporation agreed to become an honorary alumni of Silliman University...

On the other hand, the four dailys flights from Manila to Dumaguete and vice versa is now back starting this week, two flights each for Cebu Pacific and Air Philippines, and using bigger planes (Airbus for Cebu Pacific and B737 for AirPhils). Uhmm, maybe Cebu Pacific will make it three times daily by the end of the year, with the rising of more hotels in the city, the opening of the Robinsons mall, and the fullswing operation of the convention center, plus the construction of another convention center at the Dumaguete Business Park...

Hhmmm, the expansion and upgrading of the Dumaguete airport is now very, very viable.

but i thought dumaguete opposed having a mcdo kasi masyado nang "americanized" ang dumzville? i think it was ritche who said that :D
