Visit And Captivate At The Idyllic Oriental Negros
Kookoo's Nest Resort
Antulang Peninsula, Tambobo Bay, Negros Oriental
Named for the local kookoo birds, the resort is built on a narrow beach carved out of the cliffs of the Antulang Peninsula. Access from the highway is by a picturesque stairway winding down from the road above.
The resort has 4 native style cottages hidden among the palm trees along their very private beach. The cottages are built largely of bamboo and roofed with nipa palm fronds. Kookoo's Nest is a perfect place to relax and enjoy a book or a nap. It also has the best vantage point of the sunset.
In addition to the beach and relaxing atmosphere, Kookoo's Nest offers a variety of water activities. They provide several PADI diving classes and take their guests diving at their interesting house reef and at nearby underwater reserves. The snorkelling is great, and they also can provide a kayak for exploring the nearby sights.

Our Machines and equipment that pasturized and homogenized our milk.
You want some Fresh MIlk?
Since 2008 Negros Oriental is Selling already fresh pasteurized and homogenized milk. At first we sold only plain pasturized and homogenized milk. available in 1 liter and 330ml. For the first 4 months we are not facing any problem in disposing our products. Since the three association organized by NAtional Dairy Authority (NDA) and Land O'' Lakes Foundation Philippines Incorporated (LOLFPI), (DFADC, BADAFA, VADPA) are selling the milk products in their respective localities. But on a later when the supplies of raw milk increases from our organized associations, that was when we experience problems in disposing our fresh milk products.
But we are thankfull that the Provincial Government of Negros Oriental for they allocated millions from their budget yearly for the Community Milk Feeding Program (CMFP). The program does not only help us but at the same time helps alleviate the malnutrition problem of the province. CMFP

Columns signifying the evolution of NORSU
The beginnings of what is now Negros Oriental State University (NORSU) dates back to 1907, from a single woodworking class at what was then the Negros Oriental Provincial Provincial School, the forerunner of the present Negros Oriental High School. As more industrial arts subjects were added, a separate arts and trades school on the secondary level, called the Negros Oriental Trade School (NOTS) was established in 1927. NOTS became the East Visayan School of Arts and Trades (EVSAT) in 1956. EVSAT in turn, assumed collegiate status when it became Central Visayas Polytechnic College (CVPC) in In June 10, 1983. In June 25, 2004, Republic Act No. 9299 converted CVPC into the Negros Oriental State University (NORSU).

ponsing1983 December 3rd, 2011, 04:37 PM Don't forget your Hugyawan compilation, Demsie :)...I liked the costumes; NORSU paid homage to Masskara & Sinulog and a number of international festivals; Hugyawan, costume-wise, one-upped Sandurot. Congrats and Happy Birthday again, NORSU :tyty:...

Pero sometimes i would think that NORSU seems to be focusing more on these activities to the extent of overdoing it rather than focusing on the quality and standard of their education.. murag sobraan ras ka glittery ila celebration. students practice on their streetdances more than spending time on their classes. lupig pay fiesta sa ciudad. and more to that, nag suffer ila pockets at the same time. it's not bad to celebrate and have these festivals as long as dili lang ma compromise lang gyud ang pag skwela. but lately, murag it's the other way around na.. tsk tsk.

nicko December 5th, 2011, 06:21 AM Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) powers SUMC
PACS is a network of computers used across all departments in SUMC that replaces film with electronically stored and displayed digital images. It provides archives for storage of multimodality images, integrates images with patient database information, facilitates laser printing of images, and displays both images and patient information at work stations throughout the network, including patients' (both in and out patient) diagnostic and laboratory procedures. It also allows viewing of images in remote locations.

Silliman University Medical Center has been having this system since SMC-MAB came into the picture. It is one of the very few hospitals in the country that uses this centralized technology that enables every healthcare staff to access every patient's profile whenever needed. The real-time, on-demand viewing enabled by PACS can accelerate the clinical decision-making and treatment processes. PACS enables virtual consultations among multiple clinicians and sub-specialists to improve and speed clinical decision-making.

Haha, mangsolicit usa ko...I'm glad they chose that bldg so they can help brighten up that section of downtown. Notice the clean modern look of the new-generation McDonald's stores in the big cities? I believe all new stores, including ours, would have a similar design. One KFC is enough for now, I am still rooting for Pizza Hut and Red Ribbon para macompleto na ang major food chains diri.

jundem_dq63 December 6th, 2011, 03:01 AM Postcards from gentle people
by Ian Rosales Casocot
The appeal is obvious. Dumaguete is unlike any other small city in the country. It is small enough for gossip and scandal to thrive in barriotic fashion, but it also has a sense of sophistication derived from Spanish sugar stock which is tempered by American Protestant sensibility. A practiced eye could see the tension between those two cultural influences everywhere in Dumaguete—down to the difference between the type of trees planted before specific mansions along the Boulevard: an acacia for Protestant families or a palm tree for Catholic families. The city also maintains a surprisingly refined sense of cosmopolitanism, perhaps derived from the place being a University Town, which keeps it young. Everybody knows everybody else, although gone are days when one could tell who was driving by the mere sound of that somebody’s car. It is a place bordered by the Cuernos de Negros in the west and Tañon Strait in the east—a sensibility of mountain and sea that stirs in both an illusion of conservatism and gung-ho liberalism. It is a place of flux and contradictions. It is no wonder that writers from all over the country have come to it over the years and learned to tap into that mystique.

rmb December 6th, 2011, 05:54 AM Silliman University grad wins devt award in London
Filipina nurse Mylene Frieres, a graduate of Silliman University, received the prestigious "2010 Mary Seacole Development Award" at the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) headquarters in London.
The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said Frieres was cited for developing a nurse-led Port-a-Cath insertion service for patients with sickle cell disease on red cell exchange program.
Frieres, who hails from Panabo, Davao del Norte, received her award in the presence of Anne Milton, Parliamentary UnderSecretary of State for Public Health.
Frieres is an advance nurse practitioner for venous access at London's Guy's & St. Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust.
A graduate of the Silliman University College of Nursing, Frieres is the first Filipino to receive this highly coveted national award.
the Mary Seacole Leadership and Development Awards recognize nurses, midwives, and health visitors around the United Kingdom who make an outstanding contribution to patient care through development and leadership.
The Development Award, worth £6,250 (P422,423), allows recipients to undertake a project that benefits the health needs of people from black and minority ethnic communities.
On the other hand, the Leadership Award worth £12,500 (P844,846) enables nurses, midwives, and health visitors in leadership positions to undertake a project to improve patient care.
The awards were created in honor of the nurse, Mary Seacole, who contributed to nursing in the 19th century, including nursing wounded British soldiers during the Crimean War.
They are funded jointly by the UK Department of Health and NHS Employers who work in partnership with the RCN and the Royal College of Midwives (RCM).
"The positive contribution of Filipino nurses and health care workers in the United Kingdom is highly appreciated by the British Government. Their care and compassion are sought after by patients. Our nurses are truly ambassadors of goodwill of the Philippines," said Philippine Ambassador to London Enrique Manalo.
The other recipients of the 2010 Mary Seacole Development Awards included:
Sarah Bennet of St. James University Hospital
Naomi Douglas of Community Health Oxfordshire
Opal Greyson of Bedford Hospital NHS Trust.
The DFA said there are 60,000 Filipino health care workers in the UK, including 30,000 Filipino nurses.
It said there are about 250,000 Filipinos in the UK, organized into various professional, regional, and educational associations, including the Silliman University Alumni Association-United Kingdom Chapter of which Freires is an active member of its Board of Directors. - VVP, GMA News

ritche December 6th, 2011, 06:54 AM EDC, DENR to establish Philippines’ 1st arboretum in NegOr
DUMAGUETE CITY, Dec. 5 (PIA) -- The Energy Development Corporation (EDC), the country’s biggest producer of geothermal power, will spearhead the establishment of a seed bank and arboretum using 96 endangered Philippines tree species in sitio Panhilakan, barangay Puhagan, Valencia, this province.
The EDC, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the municipality of Valencia recently signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) to set up a 9.35 hectare arboretum where a collection of different rare and endemic prime trees will be propagated, according to Toni Nieva, EDC public relations supervisor.
DENR Region 7 Executive Director Maxino Dichoso and EDC Senior Vice-President Agnes de Jesus endorsed the MOA to pave the way for the establishment of the arboretum.
Nieva said the arboretum serves as learning and training facility for students, faculty, plant enthusiasts, ecotourists and people from various walks of life. It will also serve as a research laboratory for biological and environmental scientists.
The EDC Arboretum will host the 96 species of Dipterocarp and non-Dipterocarp families. These species are categorized into threatened, vulnerable, rare and endangered status based on the rules of DENR and the International Union of Conservation of Nature.

“During my first night at the conference, Kirpal (Singh) takes us out for a seafood dinner on the waterfront; it is so much like Rizal Boulevard in Dumaguete that I am momentarily disoriented. On my last afternoon in Singapore, I hear a familiar voice from the room next to mine: it is Krip, my oldest friend and big bro, just arrived from Manila to moderate the final panel and to launch his latest book. Krip/Kirpal. Jasmine Teh here and in Valencia. In the audience at one of the conference readings, I see two fellows from the Silliman Writers Workshop, Liza and Igor, who are now working in Singapore.

Celebrate a colorful Christmas in Bais City... with their 60-ft tall rotating Christmas Tree!
"Christmas is for the children," and so the City of Bais in Negros Oriental opens its plaza for free rides and scoops of ice cream.
http://www.choosephils.com/articlePhotos/travel/scache/4273_crop_top_321x208.jpg
Parents would bring out their children for a Christmassy treat without a cost in the plaza, where they can enjoy train rides with over flowing scoops of ice cream to every eager "choo-choo" riders.
http://www.choosephils.com/articlePhotos/travel/scache/4276_crop_top_321x208.jpg
Sweets just never stop as free cotton candies are also given out to little ones who go for the merry-go-round dolphins.
http://www.choosephils.com/articlePhotos/travel/scache/4275_crop_top_321x208.jpg
For kids who don't have the heart for spins, a film showing for children is available, it's not 3D but the white wide screen is as better.
http://www.choosephils.com/articlePhotos/travel/scache/4278_crop_top_321x208.jpg
Truly the spirit of Christmas will not be missed in all the corners of the city. Giant Santa Claus is standing in holding a banner of season's greetings while a life-sized Belen is put up in a generous space where you can actually climb up and take a closer look of Baby Jesus.
http://www.choosephils.com/articlePhotos/travel/scache/4281_crop_top_321x208.jpg
The basics are there too. Lanterns in all shapes and sizes hanging on trees and light poles, while Christmas lights in all colors add to the Christmas-feel.
http://www.choosephils.com/articlePhotos/travel/scache/4279_crop_top_321x208.jpg
Right at the center of the plaza stands their 60-feet tall rotating Christmas tree. With its dynamic color lighting scheme, one just can't leave without taking a series of clicks to catch up as the lights change.
http://www.choosephils.com/articlePhotos/travel/scache/4274_crop_top_321x208.jpg
The city hall itself transforms into a Christmas house every 7PM as gigantic lanterns, spelled Visayan Christmas greetings light up, and colourful fountain starts running.

Bais City is in northern part of Negros Oriental, more than 40 kilometers away from the provincial capital, Dumaguete City.

nicko December 12th, 2011, 09:05 AM You guys should visit Kofficcino.. They are almost giving Bo's a run for their money.. It's a fine cross between Bo's and probably a Starbucks or any other finer known coffee shops.. Very contemporary interiors with comfy lounge seats around.. I think they open 24 hours, with blazing fast wifi.. It has two levels..

Grand Royal Spa, on the other hand, occupies the same building but is located at the 3rd - 4th floor.. New place, same grand and quality service with GRS main in RM bldg.. The difference is that it has more private massage/spa rooms than GRS-RM blg..
Basically, the whole R&R building (FYI: the two Rs mean Roxanne and Rassel, Atty Raymund Mercado's two daughters :D - They own RM Bldg, Hi-Top NewsMag, Kofficcino, Galing Cape Coffee, franchise holder of Grand Royal Spa, stockholder of PhilSouth Properties, Meja Group, etc..) is occupied by Kofficcino (1st-2nd level) and Grand Royal Spa (3rd-4th level)

Fujifilm closed. Im not surprised. Wa na gyud na uso ang magpa develop og film. Everyone is now using digital cameras these days. Mirror closed coz they are hell expensive. Even more expensive than popular brands like kamiseta.. and their merchandise looks like it just came from Thailand.. if you are a smart shopper, then you wouldnt buy there.

draude December 13th, 2011, 06:00 AM Turtle Island rehab mulled (http://www.visayandailystar.com/2011/December/13/negor4.htm)
Siaton in Negros Oriental is allocating P1 million initially for the development and rehabilitation of the Turtle Island located near the Siit Bay.
The bay is one of the marine-rich areas in the municipality.
Mayor Albert Ator said he was encouraged to rehabilitate and develop the island, as it has sand of good quality and the best tourist attraction.
The local folks reported that the island used to be the nesting place of sea turtles, and has been the breeding place of sea turtles before the community began in the place.
Ator said he is forming a committee to handle the rehabilitation and development of Turtle Island and plans to organize the community through the Barangay Council in order to sustain the rehabilitation.
Part of the development plan is to put up a resort to cater to the needs of tourists and visitors, he said. He added that the development will be limited so as not to destroy the natural beauty of the island.
The mayor also said community participation and cooperation is very vital in the sustainability of the program.
The rehabilitation will start by the first quarter of 2012, after the release of the budget.*MA
draude December 13th, 2011, 06:02 AM DILG awards NegOr localities (http://www.visayandailystar.com/2011/December/13/negor5.htm)
Amlan in Negros Oriental recently received the Pamana ng Lahi Award of the Department of Interior and Local Government and will be the official representative of Region 7 to the municipal category of the national search.
Two Negros Oriental cities and four towns also recently earned the Seal of Good Housekeeping from the DILG, the agency’s program for local government units.
The Good Housekeeping awardees are Canlaon and Tanjay cities, and Amlan, Bacong, San Jose and Dauin towns, Rose Mascariñas, of DILG-7, said.
The LGUs also received the Performance Challenge Fund of the DILG that qualifies them to receive additional funding for development projects.
Amlan LGU received P1 million for the Performance Challenge Fund, and another P1 million for the Pamana ng Lahi award.
Tanjay and Canlaon each received P3 million as awards, while Bacong, San Jose and Dauin also got P1 million each for the Performance Challenge Fund.
The Seal of Good Housekeeping aims to recognize LGUs with good governance performance in internal housekeeping particularly on four areas, namely, Good Planning, Sound Fiscal Management, Transparency and Accountability, and Valuing of Performance Monitoring, the DILG said.*JFP

http://www.panitikan.com.ph/sites/default/files/imagecache/full-width-700px/event/dumaguetewebook.jpg
by Ian Rosales Casocot
It is not that Dumaguete is in want of literature about itself.
On the contrary, any cursory inspection of Philippine literature reveals a feast of stories and poetry and essays about this small city on the eastern coast of Negros Island. Most of them wax poetic about its spread of acacia trees, the mint-green surf off Tañon Strait, the narrow roads leading to the seaside tree-lined boulevard the length of which, so legend has it, Rizal once walked and then readily proclaimed a “place of gentle people.”
Nobody is entirely sure the Rizal story is factual—but Dumaguete is a place of riveting stories, both in fact and in fiction, which is ironic given the placid (some would say even parochial) exterior the city offers the uninitiated. Scratch the surface though, and the intrigues spring forth, ready to give any reader a taste of Southern sugar-flavored gothic. Sample, for example, Bobby Flores Villasis’ elegantly fictionalized collection of Boulevard stories in Suite Bergamasque, where he takes in the wealthy denizens of the so-called “sugar houses” lining the Rizal Boulevard and spins out of their stories tales worthy of James Joyce’s Dubliners.
The most recent addition to the mix is Lakambini Sitoy’s The Girls of Sweethaven, newly published in translation in France, which takes into fictional account the infamous video sex scandal that rocked the world of video piracy a few years back. That book and my own novel Sugar Land (which is loosely about the equally infamous serial killing that happened in Dumaguete in the early 1980s) were long-listed in the Man Asian Literary Prize in 2008. Together with novels by Edith Lopez Tiempo, Edilberto Tiempo, Krip Yuson, Ernesto Superal Yee, and forthcoming ones from Bobby Flores Villasis and Cesar Ruiz Aquino, you have a place firmly etched in literature.
But perhaps to underline that distinction, Anvil Publishing is releasing its latest title in its City Series with a focus on Dumaguete. They’ve done similar treatments of other Philippine cities before—Baguio, Manila, Cebu, and Davao. Now it is Dumaguete’s turn, and for some reason, it seems like it’s about time.

calbayognon December 13th, 2011, 03:23 PM Guyz from Dumaguete, I have a classmate here in Kobe University, a Japanese, whose thesis proposal is about the impact of ICT related services, i.e., call centers and BPOs in the economy of a certain area in the Philippines. He is interested in studying the case of Dumaguete (one of the next wave cities). Is there really a substantial economic contribution of these services to the booming economy of your city? Hope we can help him. And he is planning to go there this March-April for initial research. He is also asking if there are Japanese students in any of the universities there. Any inputs please. Thanks very much.:)

it certainly did wonders to our retail, real estate, and services market.
our very own Silliman University has annual student exchange programs with the International Christian University (ICU), Shikoku Gakuin University, Ferris University and Keio University (all prestigious Japanese universities) so it's a common sight to see Japanese students in the campus.
if your friend decides to focus on the Social aspects of the IT/BPO industry here, i personally know a Japanese community facilitator living in Dumaguete.

ritche December 14th, 2011, 02:18 AM I once made an academic study on this aspect...I can lend you some sources and materials on this field, and perhaps even some connections too...Incidentally, my studies also involved public perceptions on the impact of the IT industry to the local society, as well as the acceptability of this industry to the locals. I was able to read the studies of a European person on the impact of the IT industry in Cebu, in comparison to IT industries in Bangkok, which formed the basis of my studies...
One misperception is that one callcenter seat is supposed to have 3 employees considering that there are 3 shifts per day. But industry standards would only set it at 1.6 employee per 1 callcenter seat because a callcenter seat needs to have rest per day for maintenance and other things...

jundem_dq63 December 14th, 2011, 11:44 AM FU celebrates Kasadyaan festival
The main cultural event will be the Pasundayag Night, where songs and dances will be performed by university performers, at 6:30 p.m. on Friday at the Sofia Soller Sinco Hall. This event, which is open to the public, will see the Buglasayaw Dance Troupe and the FU Chorale, among other university talents.
On Saturday, Dec. 17, the FU community will hold a parade around the city starting at 5 p.m. This parade, called the Kasadyaan Parade, was introduced by FU founder Dr. Vicente G. Sinco in the early days of the university, as a localized version of the University of the Philippines’ Lantern Parade. Dr. Sinco had patterned many activities in FU after UP, which he had also served as dean of the College of Law and later, as its 8th President.
On Sunday, Dec. 18, FU alumni will hold a homecoming starting at 2 p.m. which will culminate in the FU Community Party and Celebratory Mass later in the afternoon. For many, the homecoming will be their first visit to their alma mater after their graduation.
A non-stock, non-profit and non-sectarian institution, FU, then known as Foundation Institute, was established on July 4, 1949 as Negros Oriental’s first Filipino institution of higher education.

jundem_dq63 December 14th, 2011, 11:49 AM Shopping around for handumanan
Ian Rosales Casocot
It’s almost Christmas. Have you done your shopping yet?
It would be considered a stretch of the imagination to consider Dumaguete a shopping mecca—no small-town Macau here, no Hong Kong or Singapore in miniature. Similar to most cities its size, cheap off-off-the-rack fashion lies in the ubiquitous ukay, and downtown—which is essentially the entire strip called Perdices Street—is a concentration of brick-and-mortar businesses that count among their lot a few retail outlets and a number of establishments that are, more or less, department stores of varying degree of patronage and respectability. Perdices Street used to be Avenida Alfonso Trese, a more romantic-sounding name that marked old Dumaguete’s burgeoning business district, which is really an extension of the more academic air of Hibbard Avenue, the acacia-lined street that cuts through the heart of Silliman Campus.
Walk along this main thoroughfare of two names, and you will have touched Dumaguete’s history in one go, even if all you could think about, especially if you are a tourist, is how short this street is, how nevertheless confusing as a commercial artery, how utterly … disjointed—though not necessarily in a bad way: here, things and functions and architectural styles and snippets of history simply jut into each other, unheeding of any attempt at organization, or taste. An old 1950s vocational school, its all-wood structure long-shuttered, is now home to a bric-a-brac-in-brass store and a fruit stand, which neighbors a haphazard collection of stores and fastfood outlets called Ever Mall, which used to be a theater of first-run American movies; another wooden remnant from the 1950s—a fire-hazard affair that looks quaint for its sheer resistance to time and weather—houses a hostel on the second floor and a beauty parlor, a cellphone shop, and a boutique on the first; along the rest of the stretch, there are hardware stores, banks, eyewear stores, pizza parlors, a Penshoppe outlet, a Jollibee/ChowKing combo, a McDonald’s, a Dunkin’ Donuts, assorted pharmacies, smaller cellphone shops, the Ongs’ textile and gift shop, some photo-processing centers, a radio station, a bakery, one or two restaurants that have defied fire or the local’s changing tastes, the Quiamcos’ small and venerable FortuneMart (where Dumagueteños of a certain class used to do their shopping away from the hoi polloi that congregate in the nearby public wet market), and some other establishments that would not look out of place in the inner-city concrete staidness you will find in, say, Cebu or Iloilo.
In the center of things, where San Juan crosses Perdices, there is Lee Super Plaza, a shopping behemoth of the Gaisano kind that sells everything. It used to rival in presence the old Cang’s Inc., Dumaguete’s signature local one-stop shop, which has since transferred to bigger space in the less-competitive harbor of Dumaguete’s North Road. Their two lesser cousins—the curious failure of MartOne (where nobody goes) and the class-free success of UniTop (housed in an old and elegant Art Deco building, now unfortunately grimy with peeling yellow-and-blue paint)—are on the same route. From a bird’s eye point of view, all of this is shopping ground zero, Dumaguete-style—unpretentious, gloriously haphazard, gregarious, small-town-ish.
But the city lives in a kind of strange bubble: by certain accounts, it is a rich city of well-to-do folk—especially if you take into consideration the mushrooming businesses everywhere, the number of banks crowded into its downtown and outlying areas, and the sheer number of hotels springing to accommodate the increasing number of tourists and businessmen traveling into it.
What Dumaguete can’t seem to deal with is its image as an emerging cosmopolitan hub. Take for example the new mall in its midst: Robinson’s Place in Calindagan, only a year old, but it took almost all of that time to become part and parcel of Dumaguete life. It took many months, once the mall opened its doors, for locals to really process this thought: A mall in Dumaguete? What a strange idea! And so, with much growing pain, we have now also taken our shopping there—but we have since conscripted the whole establishment to fit our roguish sense of pride in our kind of smallness: Robinson’s, really, is less a mall than a thriving community center, with shops. (Perhaps this is the only mall in the country where ball games are actually held in the center atrium.)
And yet, given this image, this is a city with money to spare. It has a sizable expat community. It is also a city where having the newest BMW or Ford seems de rigeur. Also a city that has an overwhelmingly successful iStore, only the fourth city in the Philippines (after Manila, Cebu, and Bacolod) to have an outlet officially blessed by Apple. (The iStore is located in the first floor of Robinson’s.) I asked Angeline Dy, its proprietor, what explains Dumagueteños’ love for Apple gadgets: “I guess we’re just smart buyers,” she said without missing a single beat.
But the question remains: what can one buy in Dumaguete? There are, of course, the knick knacks you get from the public market, which would include the colorful banigs, or straw mats, from Siaton town. If you are more environmentally-conscious, you might start with the handbags made of recycled magazines from the creative people living near the city’s dumpsite. Or you can do an entire tour of the province’s wide-ranging products by visiting the trade and tourism showroom at Sidlakang Negros along E.J. Blanco Drive.
But for the fashionista, one starts with accessories, locally-made, from Giftsfashion [www.giftsfashion.com]. “Giftsfashion is all about unusual, offbeat pieces that make a statement. They have a real impact. And they completely transform an outfit,” says general manager Gift Sarne Regalado.
Gift created her first piece on her kitchen table in 2002—and what started out as something she did to complement her own ensemble when money was tight, soon turned into a very profitable business, with family and friends buying her designs and clamoring for more. That led to a 2007 opening of her showroom along Sta. Catalina St., and going into it is stepping into a lifestyle in accessories made from sea glass, driftwood, mother-of-pearl, fibers, seeds, horns, bones, wood, crystals, and semi-precious stones.
Three of her best products are the Chunky Turbo wire-wrapped necklace (“inspired by the sea,” she said) which is made of exotic seashells, semi-precious stones, crystal, and glass beads; the Natural Mother of Pearl Flower design, part of a commissioned work as tokens for foreign dignitaries of an Asian summit; and her Sea-Glass Cuff Bracelet/Sea-Glass Collection, made of found objects and crystal, pearls, and semi-precious stone, which, according to Gift, is “our way of contributing to a sustainable environment, to help revitalize, replenish, and preserve our natural resources.”
For those with an interior design itch to fix, one goes for the unique furniture creations of Buglas Bamboo Institute [buglas-bamboo.weebly.com], which does to bamboo more than just a nod to living space aesthetics. This is design with a social component. Hatched in the mid-1990s by transplanted German Carmelite missionary Franz Kleine Koerkamp, Buglas—which is named after the ancient name of Negros Island—was to harness the ubiquitous bamboo as a means of livelihood for marginalized farmers living around Dauin town. Today, BBI’s biggest products range from raw bamboo materials, to elegant traditional or engineered house or outdoor furniture (including beds, chairs, tables, night stands, and storage units), accessories and lamps, to the construction of houses and gazebos. Since its success in the 2005 Cebu Exposition, where it won a Mugna Award for Best Outdoor Design for an intricately conceived lounge chair, sales of its products have gone up.
For the traveler itching to buy a unique-enough pasalubong, the handcrafted knick knacks of Negros Oriental Arts and Heritage [www.noahphil.com] are a must-haves. The Bacong-based enterprise, more popularly known as NOAH, has an array of products—ornate boxes and containers, candle holders, dining ware, photo frames, pots and vases, clocks, wall decors, and assorted others—all made from marble, which are inlaid with various local gemstones such as jade, agate, jasper, onyx, petrified wood, seashells, cavestone, mountainstone, fossils, riverstones, and other minerals.
Or we come back to Perdices Street, where there is always Handumanan—the local word for “souvenir”—which is the city’s oldest-running nook for travelers with a thing for quick tokens—the shirts with old Silliman Hall splashed in front in colorful design, the keychains with Dumaguete’s famed Bell Tower in miniature, the penholders with logos of the city’s universities painted on them… The shop has always been there in everyone’s farthest stretch of memory, an affair of green-painted amakan containing shelves upon shelves of everything pasalubong cliché you can think of.
But it is a beloved cliché, one that most have grown to love like a memory, a sturdy little corner that sells the city and its charms through little throwaway things. Quaint, eternal, like the small city itself.
