Stay safe taga-Negros Island. Garthin Dumaguete February 6th, 2012, 10:20 AM I was sat in Robinsons when the earthquake hit. It was amazing to see people panic. The elevators instantly became full of people. I just stayed sat down looking at the ceiling. I wanted to go to the grocery department (before they were ordered to shut down the mall), and they said they had to close kay ang tanan ang mga teller's niuli daan kay hadlok sila, so walay teller nibilin. After that, we went to Hypermart, nikaon mi. We were disturbed na pod kay ang tsunami warning. I wanted to finish my lunch pero the guards wanted to instantly close the place. Nibilin pod akong camera sa sulod... The way the city handled the tsunami alert was grossly negligent. The Sagarr trucks were using loudhailers to announce the tsunami alert. I'll be surprised kung walay sakyanan nidasmag. People were panicking, and they were just adding fuel to the fire. I also went to the pier (naa ko ug vending machine sa pier). Sirado pod. Sagarr were hindering, not helping. Even as one SAGARR van was going up the main Valencia road, they were using a loudhailer to speed people up going to the mountains. They even seem to be enjoying it. People started going faster on their bikes, I saw no many near misses, no one was respecting the 'Keep to the right' rule while driving. ritche February 6th, 2012, 12:45 PM Coming from the bus terminal, the announcements were contradictory...I wanted to get internet access to really know what's the advisory but no internet cafe was open...So I rushed to Valencia using the free ride from the municipal rescue vehicle of Valencia. When we were in Junob Task Force SAGARR announced that there is no more tsunami warning... nicko February 6th, 2012, 12:52 PM ^^ I heard same thing too.. TMO Chief Danny Atillo contacted Janayan Friday morning and as soon as Janayan showed up at the TMO, he was immediately escorted by City Tourism Officer Woodrow Maquiling Jr. to the Mayor’s office. There, Mayor Manuel Sagarbarria handed over the cash reward and expressed his admiration to Janayan for being an example to his fellow tricycle drivers in the city. Sagarbarria said Janayan proved that ordinary people are capable of doing extraordinary deeds for the betterment of society. "Philvolcs tsunami alert level is now 2. The concerned public is advised to be on alert for unusual waves. People are advised to stay away from the shoreline. People should not go to the coast to watch the tsunami. People whose houses are very near coastal areas in Negros and Cebu islands areadvised to be watchful" Phivolcs said. PHIVOLCS, recorded 6.9 magnitude. Some people panicked upon hearing and reading the report from text and verbal communication. There were many misinterpretations, some say that Negros was hit by tsunami which is not true, but it was a warning or alert to make the people be more prepare in case the the tsunami will hit. Francisco Ablong, Physics Professor said that having a tsunami in Dumaguete was slim since we are surrounded by islands. Aside from being home to a number of Centers of Excellence such as for nursing and teacher education, biology development, and biodiversity conservation, SU is one of the few places in the country that has a deep appreciation and genuine passion for culture and arts. Situated in Dumaguete City, the capital of the province of Negros Oriental, SU is a known haven for artists in the southern Philippines. On Silliman grounds, for instance, is the amphitheatre where the first Shakespearean plays were performed in the country by an all-male student ensemble. The catacombs of the nearby church, on the other hand, became a sanctuary for artists and musicians during World War II. “The cultural life at Silliman has two aspects — BL (‘Before Luce auditorium) and AL (After Luce auditorium). Before the construction of this beautiful building, there was already a lot of culture going on. Our biggest venue after the war was the gymnasium. Who performs in an airplane hangar? We did. Big performances were showcased there,” shares professor Isabel Vista, advisory council member, SU Cultural Affairs Committee (CAC). The auditorium being referred to is of course the Marie Isabel McGill Luce Auditorium, which was built in 1975 and thereafter became the seat of the culture in the university. It is the only theater south of Manila that has a proper arts season. Today, as the Silliman University Cultural Affairs Committee is set to celebrate its 50th year, the esteemed university opens its doors to its brightest cultural season yet. GRATITUDE TO THE GIVER The 50th anniversary celebrations to start in June will be called Handulantaw, which literally means “a tribute to the great giver of talents.’’ “The golden anniversary of cultural affairs in Silliman University is a testimony to God’s blessings to SU. It is for this reason why Handulantaw is a tribute in gratitude to the great giver of talents,” explains CAC chair Prof. Diomar Abrio. This year-long celebration directs SU’s goal to spread culture and arts with fire, faith, instruction, research, and extension. “Faith that God, the great giver of life, will continue to bless the university, educate the academe and the community, intensify our research program component through cultural research and exhibitions, and strengthen the extension program by supporting local entities through workshops and teacher trainings and bringing presentations to various local communities and encourage participation in the larger community,” Abrio adds. BRILLIANT 50 YEARS The committee launched the 50th cultural season, which will run from June to May 2013. Different performing companies from Dumaguete and Manila will showcase their talent for this cultural season. Among the performers are the Philippine Opera Company (in season opener “Ang Bagong Harana), the Loboc Children’s Choir, the Philippine Educational Theater Association ( “William”), Ballet Philippines in Sleeping Beauty,” Octava Choral Society, the Kahayag Dance Company, the Silliman University Symphony Orchestra, and Ryan Cayabyab in ‘’A Night with Maestro Ryan Cayabyab.’’ The season will also feature events such as Cinemalaya goes to Silliman; The Man and the World: A Tribute to Edilberto K. Tiempo on the Centenary of his Birth, the Albert Faurot Lecture Series, the Eddie Romero Film Series; the Annual Himig at Sayaw competition, etc. Silliman University is not only a venue for art appreciation but it is also an institution that has produced some of the country’s best artists in the fields of music, literature, and film. Among them are filmmaker Eddie Romero, National Artist for Cinema; writers Edith Tiempo, National Artist for Literature, Edilberto Tiempo, and Cesar Cruz Aquino, four-time Palanca awardee. It is also the breeding ground for budding writers, with its long-running Silliman National Writers Workshop founded by Edilberto Tiempo. SU also has its own College of Performing and Visual Arts which has a roster of student artists who go around to perform. SU holds regular workshops for music and visual arts, and offers scholarships to talented yet underprivileged high school students. This nurturing environment for cultural appreciation has inspired its student body to truly appreciate the arts. “One of the things that awed me is how truly appreciative the students are. They know what a good performance is. I think what this tradition has given to young people is really a grounded aesthetic of appreciation. You usually see this reaction to pop culture and media. You get a classical group and they really like the show and not because they are being tutored but because they know that it is good art,” shares Dessa Quesada Palm, CAC committee member and a former resident of Manila. It is not about commodization, Palm qualifies. “I think, it is the value of the arts. Even if there are circumstances, we think that it is an integral part of education,” she adds. STRUGGLING BUT SURVIVING The committee admits that although the appreciation is already there, they are still struggling to sustain it especially today when young people spend most of their time on computers and social networking sites. To face this head-on, the administration has incorporated art appreciation in the curriculum. For example, Fine Arts students are required to watch cultural shows. “Some of the students actually would like to join. But we have a difficult time now because some of the students would rather just go play with their computers and do Facebook. There is really a struggle against this, because what they see on TV is totally the opposite of what we show. But thankfully, many students now really come to buy the season tickets,” CAC Advisory Council chair Dr. Elizabeth Susan Suarez laments. “How were we able to reach 50 years? It has not been easy. The first vision of CAC differed from the vision we have now. That is because of the changing times and the people going and coming. It has not been easy for all these years to keep the creative juices alive for the ones who have the passion for it,” adds Dr. Suarez SU has always considered the youth as the grassroots in building culture. ‘’We want to be seen by the world as a community that continues to celebrate arts and culture. Hopefully we can get the financial support to sustain what we have already started,” Dr. Suarez says. OUTSIDERS LOOKING IN People outside of Dumaguete and the SU community regard these places with much respect and awe. “It’s so hard to sustain the arts. In fact I’m envious of what you have here because you have really the community responding to your call for sustainability. In Manila, of course, we find it rather challenging, an uphill battle to rally the community, especially our business community. But we don’t lose hope,” shares Cultural Center of the Philippines president Raul Sunico. On the other hand, Paul Morales, artistic director of Ballet Philippines, says the presence of a cultural theater like the Luce Auditorium has played a major role in spreading the love for arts among in the community. “They have a significant season here. Having a local theater gives space to the local artists and it helps professionalize and sustain the industry as a whole,” Morales says. Through the years, there is only one thing that has remained constant in SU’s history — that it will continue to nurture anyone who cares for the arts. Silliman University is a dream place for artists, and with all the concerted efforts being exerted by those who believe in its vision, SU will continue to be the haven that it already is for a long, long time. draude February 7th, 2012, 01:24 PM 1,009 in counting after shocks. THIS IS GUIHULNGAN HINAKPAN HILLS Brgy. Hinakpan, Guihulngan, Negros Oriental Hinakpan Hills are situated in the peak of Guihulngan so one can feel the extreme coolness of the air while viewing its beauty as well as that of the other places such as the Canlaon Volcano. They set up a booth at Fuente Osmena and are accepting cash donations and supplies. I am appealing to Dumaguetenos and other Oriental Negrenses for help. Christmas is over but we should exhibit the same level of generosity we did during Sendong. Medicines, food and other basic supplies are badly needed. Donations can be dropped off at the local Red Cross office but I'll go to ABS CBN later, I'm sure they accept donations too. ponsing1983 February 7th, 2012, 10:33 PM ^^ It has gone above 1,500 na... They are pretty similar to breadtalk, self-service bakeshop with gourmet bread selections but their ambiance is more on the rustic side. My friends from Bacolod hoard Focaccias as their pasalubong when they get tired of sans rival and silvanas, which easily melt and make a mess while commuting..:) Actually, with the pics, the ambience is way better than Bread Talk. :eat: With the San Rival, I would go for miles just to have that. We worked through the night as the injured and even the dead were rushed in,” said Dr. Hugh Parsons, an ophthalmologist. “I was aware of the Filipino people’s resiliency, but what I saw there drove it home for me,” said the Canadian ophthalmologist. He cited the case of a nurse, whose name he failed to take down, who was taking care of the injured even while she worried about the fate of her father who lived in Barangay (village) Planas, which was badly hit by the 6.9-magnitude temblor. Parsons, a retina specialist who is married to Filipino physician Tina Aquino, has been conducting medical missions in China, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand and the Philippines. He was on his way to La Libertad town at the head of a 15-member team of doctors, nurses and medical staff when the tremor struck. When the team could not get through the roads to La Libertad, it was decided to proceed to Guilhulngan. Hospital scene Parsons said he had never seen anything approaching the scale of what he saw in the city. “Everybody was dazed. Quite a lot of people moved out of their homes for fear of a tsunami. A lot of places were empty. Churches, buildings and houses had collapsed,” Parsons said. At the Guihulngan District Hospital, the staff tried to deal with so many persons with fractures, cuts and abrasions from falling debris. The patients had been moved out to a portion of the lawn protected by tarpaulin as the hospital was already considered unsafe, Parsons said. The dedicated nurse, he said, did not abandon her post even as she kept trying to call her father in Planas. But the phone lines were down. When a connection was finally made at about 2 a.m. the next day, she could not reach her father. Among those who died in the quake were four high school classmates of the nurse’s daughter, Parsons said. He said he did not know if the nurse finally had reach her father. Because the hospital was lacking in facilities, the medical staff could only stabilize the critically ill patients until the ambulances were finally able to pass through the road between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m. on Tuesday, Parsons said. Guihulngan could only be reached from the north since the roads and bridges in the south had been destroyed. “We could only put splints on those with fractures. There were no supplies to set fractures nor anesthesia,” Parsons recalled. He said he sutured a lot of wounds. They tried to send home people who were stable as quickly as possible to make space for more quake victims coming in, he said. Hands full Parsons said he could not say how many patients were brought to the hospital because the medical staff had their hands full with people coming in and out. In between treating the patients, the doctors and nurses would rest on a cemented area inside the hospital, but aftershocks prompted them to run outside and stay there. Parsons said he was informed that the hospital in La Libertad had also sustained damage. “I don’t know where they will treat patients in serious condition,” Parsons said. “They have no capability to sterilize hospital equipment. They are running out of medical supplies, local anesthetics, sutures, syringes and needles,” he said. Yes-we-can attitude Parsons said he was amazed at how people were ready to work and to help others, were polite and even managed to smile despite what they went through. “Somebody brought us as far as he could never expecting anything for it, and the police and Army helped us move our supplies,” he said. “The people there all seemed to have this ‘yes, we can’ attitude, and the spirit of wanting to help in whatever way they could,” said Parsons. Alinghi February 11th, 2012, 02:42 AM if we say it in the context of environmental neglect by our politicians (turning a blind eye to the illegal logging activites and not being able to enforce waste segragation laws) then certainly the calamity of Sendong and the landslides has been sort of a "payback" by Mother Nature.. but yet again, politicians do not make the society alone, if we blame them for neglect, then certainly the people also have their own lapses.. ritche February 11th, 2012, 06:16 AM there's no such thing as karma... well unless if your not a christian. Indeed, karma is a very Christian thing...You reap what you sow, cause and effect. wis February 11th, 2012, 07:34 AM Indeed, karma is a very Christian thing...You reap what you sow, cause and effect. Got this from an email... Reap What You Sow If we always reap what we sow, the Bible would clearly confirm this. To the contrary; let’s look at just a few passages of scripture that contradict karmic philosophy: In Jeremiah 12:1 we see that the wicked actually REAP (prosper) in this world! “Righteous are You, O LORD, that I would plead my case with You; Indeed I would discuss matters of justice with You: Why has the way of the wicked prospered? Why are all those who deal in treachery at ease?” On the other hand, God can thwart the reaping of the wicked. This truly shows that karma is not a Biblical concept: Jeremiah 12:13: “They have sown wheat and have reaped thorns, they have strained themselves to no profit. But be ashamed of your harvest because of the fierce anger of the LORD." Hosea 8:7: “For they sow the wind and they reap the whirlwind. The standing grain has no heads; it yields no grain. Should it yield, strangers would swallow it up.” Micah 6:15: “You will sow but you will not reap. You will tread the olive but will not anoint yourself with oil; and the grapes, but you will not drink wine.” And sometimes, God works quite the opposite of karma: Psalm 126:5: “Those who sow in tears shall reap with joyful shouting.” Matthew 6:26: “Look at the birds of the air, that they do not sow, nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they?” But what about the scripture that says, “Whatever a man sows, this he will also reap”? Let’s read this in context, and then understand its meaning: Galatians 6:7-9: “Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. Let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap if we do not grow weary.” What is this talking about? When we put our faith in works in order to determine our earthly outcome, we are sowing to the flesh. When we put our faith in Christ we are sowing to the Spirit and reap eternal life! The Chief of Guihulngan District Hospital is Dr. Edgardo Pialogo. His house in Jimalalud was also damaged during the earthquake and had to temporarily live in a tent, but due to the higher call of duty, he had to leave his family in Jimalalud and go to Guihulngan amidst the aftershocks and damaged roads and bridges to help the victims and patients of his hospital. Here are his pictures and captions of what he call as "field hospital" since they could not go inside the hospital and they had to operate and work outside and under the tents. http://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/427716_358480364170231_100000248127717_1402321_2087681535_n.jpg Spilled wd boiling cooking oil during d quake.. http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/402696_358479440836990_100000248127717_1402317_2147430531_n.jpg SERVICE.. despite the QUAKE!.. the rain.. & being victims.. http://a3.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/420147_358477030837231_100000248127717_1402313_491152140_n.jpg THANKS to my dedicated hospital staff & personnel ! http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/420885_358476157503985_100000248127717_1402312_852114788_n.jpg Our field hospital.. http://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/418208_358474717504129_100000248127717_1402310_1352848752_n.jpg Mobile Nurse stn http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/426149_358474057504195_100000248127717_1402308_1011780338_n.jpg TENT.. unfinished business http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/428123_358473324170935_100000248127717_1402306_230496695_n.jpg Hospital facade http://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/423329_358472287504372_100000248127717_1402302_352487608_n.jpg O2 tanks scattered on the ground http://a8.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/423046_358471384171129_100000248127717_1402301_839677198_n.jpg 6 yr old girl hit by a falling concrete at the L thigh http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/417454_358470287504572_100000248127717_1402299_1430973936_n.jpg DOH doctor attending to quake victim jundem_dq63 February 11th, 2012, 08:51 AM http://a7.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/395286_10150594619954138_817184137_8678131_1789891037_n.jpg jundem_dq63 February 11th, 2012, 09:23 AM OPENING THIS MARCH! https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/430833_10151268433835331_471219750330_22744822_408339529_n.jpg      At last ma open na jud siya....:banana::banana::banana::banana: Additional Hotel Room this summer......Arangkada Dumaguete City nicko February 11th, 2012, 12:04 PM https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/409011_169981996446623_109126342532189_241035_1139684948_n.jpg https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/430229_169983493113140_109126342532189_241039_1931371510_n.jpg https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/401175_2914437614652_1072042181_2901959_1484794178_n.jpg https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/401011_10150620610097220_805607219_8763643_2082598055_n.jpg https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/418624_2897372146623_1029939199_32397709_2073886399_n.jpg cyberwizard February 11th, 2012, 03:10 PM Catch up on some of the posts: That SR-71 blackbird is quite ancient, and whoever imposed it on the pic got its size wrong; it's too big. Quite a long reply for such a small matter...Cause and effect is a basic premise in our physical world. And in our daily lives and business, cause and effect/reaping and sowing are basic principles that people follow. Of course it is not that simple, it is a given. If you plant, there are a lot of factors. But people plant for the basic reason that they want to harvest...If you do bad you are supposed to reap a bad reward, but it is not that simple. Along the way while waiting for the bad reward you might repent and get forgiveness. Then what is the bad thing due you might be withheld, and instead you get favor. But of course you reap the consequence, but the full force of your bad deeds may not fall on you, such as losing eternal life or paradise. Again everything is not really that simple. Some people may prosper because of their treachery, and maybe because the people they have dealt with are wicked as well. But again the basic principle is people reap what they sow, more so if that has been for a very long time already, there ought to be some results, whether physically or spiritually, and spiritual punishments could be reflected in some very physical events. ritche February 11th, 2012, 04:32 PM http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/402089_314065568627763_207811085919879_1001241_452325558_n.jpg https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/403315_290677744328094_100001576130317_815386_1729522910_n.jpg The presidential plane could have been given priority, the reason for the unusual position of the PAL plane... Kanlaon of possible eruption after the 6.9-magnitude earthquake. The governor made the appeal to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) to allay fears that the quake, which was followed by several aftershocks, may trigger the eruption of the volcano, although the Capitol’s Provincial Disaster Management Program (PDMP) office earlier said the quake may not trigger eruption. Water sources found near the vicinity of the volcano were believed to have been adversely affected, as indicated by water discoloration from these sources. Based on the updated report of PDMP head Vicfran Defante, the sulfur pool of Mambukal Resort is also affected. Residents in Barangay Minoyan in Murcia, which is close to Kanlaon volcano, reported that water coming from Kanlaon sources had turned black, making it unfit for drinking. The Municipal Government of Murcia and the office of third district Representative Albee Benitez have been supplying water to the affected residents. Water discoloration was also experienced in Moises Padilla, La Castellana and La Carlota, which are also near the volcano. Marañon reiterated his appeal to the public not to panic in case of earthquake and instead pray for the safety of everybody. He assured that the Provincial Government will extend assistance to the victims of the earthquake in Negros Oriental. The Provincial Government will determine the exact amount, during its session Wednesday, which will be used to buy relief goods for the victims of the quake. On the other hand, the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO) reported cases of evacuation in Hinoba-an, Sipalay City, Kabankalan City, Hinigaran, Pontevedra, Calatrava, San Carlos City, Binalabagan, Sagay City, Isabela and Himamaylan, reportedly due to tsunami fears. The residents reportedly went back to their respective houses early in the morning Tuesday. Most of the evacuees said they received text messages about the tsunami alert after the earthquake. Marañon asked residents that, before evacuating, they should first verify with authorities any text messages, which they may receive. PDMP also reported that the earthquake also resulted in cracks on the walls of Sagay City and Cadiz City Halls and in the Unitop Building in San Carlos City. In Himamaylan, the City Risk Reduction Council declared the suspension of work on the Himamaylan City Hall Monday afternoon. The group also observed cracks in the walls and floors of the Himamaylan new hospital building, cracks on the bridges in Barangay 1 and Talaban in Himamaylan and the Himamaylan gym Entrance and in Talubangi bridge. Gaisano Kabankalan building also suffered cracks. At the Provincial Capitol, cracks were also noted at the SP office walls and flooring, tile floorings at the Vice Governor's Office, walls and flooring of the Accounting Office and the Public Affairs Office, PSWDO office, flooring of the DILG office, walls of the PHO office and administrative office. source: http://www.sunstar.com.ph/bacolod/local-news/2012/02/08/guv-phivolcs-closely-monitor-mt-kanlaon-204934 http://ph.news.yahoo.com/guv-phivolcs-closely-monitor-mt-kanlaon-015105187.html trixter February 11th, 2012, 06:44 PM ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Need to be checked by the government clarion February 12th, 2012, 06:38 AM the only "Presidential Plane" is a Fokker F-28 of the Philippine Air Force bearing registry RP-1250 and callsign "Kalayaan 1" http://www.flickr.com/photos/darylchapman/4312208191/ anything else is just a "Chartered Plane" Thats correct! :okay: and what happened to kalayaan 1 alinghi? spare parts problem? clarion February 12th, 2012, 06:42 AM http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/402089_314065568627763_207811085919879_1001241_452325558_n.jpg we need a wider tarmac.... Godspeed Recovery! if u dont mind..hehe.. Team Albay goes to Negros for 6th mercy mission LEGAZPI CITY - In response to the emergency appeal by Negros Oriental officials, Albay has dispatched its nationally acclaimed Team Albay on another mercy mission to Guihulngan City. The team is now in the earthquake-ravaged Central Visayas area. Albay Gov. Joey Salceda said Team Albay’s mission is to help provide potable water, evacuation management, emergency pre-hospital and pre-emptive public health care, and psychosocial assistance to displaced residents, as well as assist in the search and retrieval of victims still missing in landslide-hit areas. Salceda ordered the deployment of the team consisting of 86 personnel and their support staff, mostly veterans of five previous mercy missions, following the 6.9-magnitude earthquake that hit Negros Oriental that triggered massive landslides, chaos and evacuation. The team is composed of specialists from the Office of Civil Defense V, the Albay Provincial Health Office and the Albay Water and Sanitation (Watsan) unit, the DOH Center for Health and Development V, the Philippine Air force Tactical Operations Group V, Naval Forces Southern Luzon (Navforsol) and the Albay-based 901st Army Brigade whose members are highly trained in search, rescue and retrieval, and armed with modern equipment. http://businessmirror.com.ph/home/regions/23305-team-albay-goes-to-negros-for-6th-mercy-mission Parchie February 15th, 2012, 05:24 PM https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/423343_350561804978700_100000746492951_1213187_459754231_n.jpg Question: Are we to believe this is the Bulado Wharf in Guihulngan? I tried Googling this picture and saw that this pic was grabbed from the CentCom web. Here's the caption on that same picture: Philippine Navy’s largest transport ship is scheduled to arrive in Cebu on the 31st of December to transport relief goods to flood stricken Dumaguete City in Negros Oriental. Barko ng Republika ng Pilipinas (BRP) Bacolod City, LC-550 will be proceeding to Cebu after it completes its delivery of relief goods to Cagayan de Oro and Iligan cities. Leo Lastimosa, TV Patrol Central Visayas’ anchor, announced thru DYAB, its local AM radio station that the ship will be transporting the relief goods they have repacked at their regional complex in Jagobiao, Mandaue City, Cebu. Lastimosa lauded the Navy’s deed. He also thanked PN’s Flag Officer in Command, Vice Admiral Alex Pama and Naval Forces Central (Navforcen) Commanding Officer, Commodore Zyril Carlos for the assistance they have extended to the relief operations of their station. Commissioned in 1993, the ship has a capacity to transport up to 48 TEU or 2,280 tons vehicles/general cargo, or up to 900 tons on Logistics Over The Shore (LOTS) / amphibious operations. Its ramps and the main deck are able to withstand roll on/roll off operations of even heavy main battle tanks. The road network, they assured President Benigno Aquino III, may take at least 40 days to become passable even as repairs to bridges may take months to complete. The power lines in northern Negros Oriental, which were damaged by the earthquake, were also being rebuilt with the help of neighboring electric cooperatives in Negros Island. Every week, there is always a concert, a literary workshop or poetry reading, a play, a dance, an exhibit, a film showing, or some other cultural activity taking place in a number of exhibition halls and performance spaces, such as the Claire Isabel McGill Luce Auditorium and Gallery, the Woodward Little Theater, the Guy Hall Music Sala, the Silliman Hall Gallery, the Amphitheater, the Main Library, the Gymnasium, the Audio-Visual Theater, the End House Gallery, the Silliman Church Catacombs, and others. Before the Luce Auditorium's completion in 1975, Shakespearean plays were regularly presented in the Amphitheater, and prestigious performing companies such as Le Grand Ballet Classique de France and such musical luminaries as pianist Susan Starr have performed in the Gymnasium. In 1962, the Cultural Affairs Committee was formed under the able chairmanship of Prof. Miriam G. Palmore, who was the former director of the School of Music and Fine Arts (now the College of Performing Arts). Among the famous artists and performers in those early years of the Luce Auditorium included the Cultural Center of the Philippines Dance Company, Taipei Children's Choir, French concert pianist Nicole Delannoy, German violinist Denes Zsigmondy, American soprano Julia Finch, Swiss pianist Nicole Wickihalder, Filipina pianist Cecile Licad, American violinist Stanley Plummer, and popular local singers such as Pilita Corrales who was then a singing superstar in Australia. GARCIA (Manila Bulletin) February 4, 2012, 11:49pm CULTURED CAMPUS — Silliman University’s campus is in itself a cultural heritage. Photo By ANDREW PAMORADA MANILA, Philippines — The rich history of Silliman University (SU) runs parallel to its excellent academic achievements and significant contributions to the country. The catacombs of the nearby church, on the other hand, became a sanctuary for artists and musicians during World War II. http://www.mb.com.ph/articles/350366/cradle-culture-heart-arts Silliman U.'s Golden Year of Arts & Culture KRIPOTKIN By Alfred A. Yuson (The Philippine Star) February 13, 2012 A weekend in our adopted hometown of Dumaguete is always welcome, especially if it has to do with helping promote a facet of Silliman University that has yet to be fully appreciated. On the last weekend of January, arts and culture honchos from Metro Manila as well as a media contingent were invited for proper immersion, and came away enthralled over a tradition that started all of fifty years ago. That was when Silliman U’s Culture and Arts Committee was founded, with Miriam G. Palmore, then director of the School of Music and Fine Arts (now the College of Performing Arts) serving as the first chair. The idea was to have the university offer a regular series of cultural presentations, not simply as individual offerings by the various university departments. http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=776830&publicationSubCategoryId=79 Silliman, sleeping, eating, laughing FROM THE STANDS By Domini M. Torrevillas (The Philippine Star) February 16, 2012 For many years after finishing college, during my annual vacation leave from the newspaper writing business in Manila, I took sentimental journeys to Silliman in Dumaguete, where my heart belongs, as it does too, to my hometown of Gingoog City in Misamis Oriental. A couple of weeks ago, I returned to Silliman, thanks to an invitation to join a bunch of Manila-based journalists to observe the celebration of the 50th year of the founding of Silliman’s Cultural Arts Committee. This committee has been responsible for the artistic and cultural outputs of the university’s literati and culture vultures — of novels, poems and essays; concerts and operas, Broadway musicales, lectures and national and internationally-known workshops that trained many of the country’s topnotch writers. The Manila media were given a glimpse into this year’s series of cultural presentations, through a looking back and looking forward musical, Handulantaw, and a production directed by the late Evelyn Rose Aldecoa, of Broadway’s Stephen Schwarts and John-Michael Tebelak’s Godspell, which demonstrated that imagination, dance and artistry and proper English diction are alive and well in this famous university. http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=778031&publicationSubCategoryId=64 http://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/397709_10150668731918989_113579223988_12233101_678574132_n.jpg The Second Half of the Current 49th Cultural Season Most Recent Performance Let's talk about VAGINA http://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/416870_10150796031083989_113579223988_12639167_1139963606_n.jpg Upcoming Shows http://a8.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/395550_10150793550323989_113579223988_12633421_1041853314_n.jpg Catch cellist Ann Alton, pianist Cristine Coyiuto, and violinist Michael Emery in concert this Sunday, FEBRUARY 19, at 8 PM at the Luce Auditorium! http://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/s320x320/401069_10150793594243989_113579223988_12633519_271512001_n.jpg Cristine Coyiuto received her Master of Music degree from the Julliard School as a pupil of Jacob Lateiner. It would take at least 42 men to encircle its trunk. At the heart of this wide tree trunk is a cavity where lizards, bats and many insects have made it their home. With fireflies lighting it at night like a year-round Christmas tree, it is one of the city's main tourist attractions.
