Simeon Toribio
Olympic Stories: The Early Medalists
By Ronnie Nathanielsz | Yahoo! PH Sports – Thu, Jun 28, 2012 3:15 PM PHT
The Philippines had its most successful Olympics to date in terms of medals, winning three bronzes in Los Angeles where there were those who believed that the Filipinos were at home in the climate that approximated that of Manila, which partially accounted for their success.
Simeon Toribio led the charge in athletics when he won the bronze medal in the high jump in his second of three stints in the Olympics, having first competed in the 1928 Olympics where he narrowly failed to win the bronze medal. Benjamin Hedges of the US and Claude Menard of France, who along with Toribio cleared the bar at 1.91 meters, had less attempts than the Filipino and narrowly edged Toribio for the silver and bronze medals with Bob King of the US winning the gold with a height of 1.94 meters.
In a interesting insight into Toribio’s misfortunes in the 1932 Games, author Jorge Afable said that Toribio could have won the gold medal, if he wasn’t bothered by a "call of nature" during a crucial stage of the high jump competition which lasted for a grueling four hours. Afable recalled that the bar had been raised to 6’ 6” and Toribio who once made the jump, failed to overcome it the second time because he was distressed by his need to answer a call of nature.
In 1930, Toribio was honored as Asia’s greatest athlete and was awarded the Helms World Trophy athlete some two years prior to his success in the Los Angeles Olympics. He was adjudged Asia’s best athlete after winning gold medals in the high jump event at what was regarded as the Far Eastern Olympics in 1921, 1923, 1927 and 1930.
A bright young man, Toribio studied at Silliman University adnbecame a lawyer. In 1941 he was elected congressman from the second district of the picturesque province of Bohol where he had settled down. Toribio served in the House of Representatives until 1953.

Imagine a Philippine classroom where students do not anymore use thick, paperbound books. Instead, before each student and the teacher is an iPad.
No, this is not a picture of a classroom of the future. It’s happening now at Foundation University (FU) in Dumaguete City.
The iPad is Apple’s revolutionary handy tablet computer, which has become a popular platform for audio-visual media including books, periodicals, movies, music, games and web content.
Through this device, sophomore high school students are learning through digitized Philippine textbooks from Vibal Publishing House Inc., which also started producing e-books for this school year.
“It was a wonderful coincidence,” said Victor Vicente Sinco, FU vice president for finance and administration.
The university prepared to start the program this year where only Math, English and Science would be taught using the iPad. But in the process, one of the students stumbled upon Vibal Publishing’s latest innovation.
The university then asked Vibal Publishing permission to be the first Philippine school to use their e-books for iPads. The company immediately sent their software experts to Dumaguete to brief the teachers on how to use the e-books.
Hawon Roh, 14, a Korean student, said he was excited with the touch-screen features of the iPad, which he says makes learning more exciting.
Filipino teacher Venicar Eltanal, on the other hand, said the interactive features of the e-books make students more interested in class.
Mac users
Foundation University, a 62-year-old nonstock, nonprofit, nonsectarian institution, is no stranger to technological innovations being the largest Mac user outside of Manila.
“We easily have 300 machines for students only, not counting the offices. To count the total number of Macs at FU, either university or personally owned units, would easily top 400,” Sinco said.
Sinco, whose love for Macs started when he was an associate at AM Partners Inc. in Hawaii in the mid 1980s, said the university is removing PCs and replacing them with Macs, just like what President Barack Obama did when he first entered the White House.
The iPad has been a great help for Sinco, an itinerant architect and educator, who spends half of the year in the Philippines and the other half in Hawaii.
“I primarily purchased it for mobility. In the beginning, it was good for e-mail but I found out that I could edit architecture designs on the iPad and e-mail it back to the office. No time was lost.”

jundem_dq63 July 3rd, 2012, 02:38 PM HAPPY BIRTHDAY FOUNDATION UNIVERSITY
http://dumaguetemetropost.com/clients/dumaguetemetropost/7-2-2012-5-13-28-PM-1533563.jpg
Foundation University marks its 63rd year on Wednesday, July 4, with a series of activites lined up for the week.
The celebration kicks off on Monday, July 2 with a Eucharistic celebration at 8 a.m. fronting the Sofia Soller Sinco Hall to be joined by the entire FU community. The Holy Mass will be followed by a community fellowship at the FU Green, where the administrators, faculty/staff and students will have fun and games at 10 a.m.
Freshmen and transferees will have the Academic Opening Convocation on Wednesday, July 4 at 3:30 p.m. at the Sofia Soller Sinco Hall where University President Dr. Mira D. Sinco will give the keynote address.
After the convocation, the FU community will walk towards the Rizal Boulevard, passing along Colon St. for the Dal-uy ceremony at the Rizal Boulevard at 6:30 p.m.
The Dal-uy is a traditional activity where Foundationites float lighted lanterns on the sea. Each lantern contains a personal wish or prayer for the coming year.
The yellow lighted lanterns contrast with the darkened Rizal Boulevard environment, providing a picturesque and striking image of Dumaguete’s premier tourist destination.
The scenic and solemn sight will be capped by a brief fireworks display from the Dumaguete pier.
The Dal-uy is patterned after ceremonies held in many other Asian countries, as well as in the U.S. State of Hawaii.
After the ceremony, the lanterns will be collected and recycled for next year’s ceremony.
The University will hold the annual academic opening dinner at 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 5.
Foundation University, founded by Dr. Vicente G. Sinco, started as a two-room Foundation College on July 4, 1949. It became a university in 1969. Aside from basic education, it also offers over 41 academic degrees through nine colleges and schools, and caters to about 3,000 students.

jundem_dq63 July 3rd, 2012, 04:38 PM Buglasan Festival activities to return to original venue
LGU booths to remain at Sidlakang Village
By Rachelle M. Nessia
DUMAGUETE CITY, June 21 -- The activities for this year's Buglasan Festival of Festivals will be staged at the Capitol grounds in October, five years after the festival was moved to Sidlakang Negros Village (SNV).
Capitol Information Officer Adrian Sedillo said the festival activities will return to the Capitol grounds this year following discussions between the provincial government and the local government units (LGUs) here.
The Negros Oriental Tourism Council earlier proposed to transfer the venue of the Buglasan Festival activities and booths back to the Capitol grounds but several local government officials rejected the move due to budgetary constraints.
Held in October each year, the Buglasan Festival’s activities and LGU-constructed booths were originally set up at the Capitol grounds and Freedom Park (located in front of the Capitol building) when the provincial government revived the festival in 2002 under the administration of then Governor and now 2nd District Rep. George Arnaiz.
In 2007, during the time of the late Gov. Emilio Macias II, the festival was moved to SNV in Piapi, Dumaguete City where LGUs erected permanent fixtures for their booths.
This year, Gov. Degamo’s office received suggestions on the possibility of moving the Buglasan Festival back to the more spacious Capitol grounds and Freedom Park, prompting the Governor to order the Provincial Tourism Council led by Dr. Nick Elman to conduct a survey to collect feedback on the proposed move.
Reports quoting Dr. Elman indicate that 80% to 85% of said survey’s respondents favor the move to bring the festival back to the Capitol grounds.
Sedillo said that after meeting with the mayors, the governor decided that only the festival activities will be brought back to the Capitol grounds after the mayors bucked the plan to construct LGU booths in front of the Capitol.
Degamo initially offered the LGUs a P100,000 subsidy to put up their booths in front of Capitol but the mayors begged off, saying that the subsidy is not enough for the booth construction and they do not have the funds to cover the needed amount.
“They are going to support the various Buglasan activities but the plan of constructing another booth in the Capitol grounds is not quite practical as all local government units presently feel the impact of their reduced share of the Internal Revenue Allotment (IRA),” said Sedillo.
The governor said the LGU booths will stay at the Sidlakang Negros Village.
“Sidlakang Negros Village will remain as the show window of all the provincial government’s efforts in the promotion of culture, arts, heritage and tourism potentials in Negros Oriental,” Degamo said.
Sedillo added that corporations and private establishments are invited to set up their own booths at the Freedom Park. (RMN/PIA Negros Oriental)

That's steam not smoke and technically the crack or fissure in the earth where the steam comes out is called a fumarole not a sulfur vent.

Lancera will hold office at the site where Zero-One Concept used to operate its business.
No exact number of people working on the BPO business as of the moment, but ICT Dumaguete pegged it at a very conservative estimate of 7,000
The local BPO sector contributes to the city around half a billion pesos/year (roughly Php 40M a month)
Many small- and medium-sized new outsourcing companies are still looking for space to do business. This is an indicative factor of the fact that ICT/BPO business is really booming in our city. All in all what the city really needs is investors that will put up office spaces and buildings. The chicken-or-egg dilemma currently faced by the city now is that realty investors demand for business investors first, while business investors demand availability of office spaces beforehand.
From rank 10, we are now the 7th or 8th next wave city as per latest report accdg to the ICT Secretary (to be confirmed personally -- i have yet to see actual report on paper).
There is no date set in stone for the reported BPO building supposedly to be erected between GoHotels and the terminal. When I asked about this, DTI called up a head honcho of Robinsons during the meeting to confirm/deny this issue and he refuted the claims, although he said that if an investor is interested, they would readily "build to client specifications" in that area.

This is great update...Hoping that we really have improved in standing in the list of the ICT next wave cities. Yeah I was told that the supposed BPO building has no clear occupant yet, although some companies were floated such as SPi, and the usual suspects that are already occupying various Robinsons building in other parts of the country...

ritche July 9th, 2012, 02:27 AM Dumaguete
Dumaguete is probably my favorite place in the Philippines, and the Philippines is probably my favorite country to visit. Digging Duma is basically in my DNA. It’s a college town with around 100,000 people, has tons of cool restaurants, a thriving live music scene, an inordinate number of pretty girls, a love of basketball, and has one of the most impressive bar-to-resident ratios of any city I’ve been to. Yep, Duma is the closest thing to good old Lawrence, Kansas that one could find in Asia.
Dumaguete is the capital of the Negros Oriental province of the Philippines, easily the most unintentionally racist place name that I know of. Negros Oriental is a great place to hang out though, complete with beaches, top-notch diving, waterfalls, and towering mountains. Other than the beach, I took advantage of none of these natural resources.
Why? Because Dumaguete was my vacation from this vacation. I met up with my friend Cores, who I met a year and a half ago or so, and we spent our time hanging out in cafes, doing crossword puzzles, watching TV, riding motorcycles, and generally being lazy. It’s amazing how doing nothing can make a week go by faster than my usual shenanigans on this trip like visiting temples and hiking through the jungle and hanging out at the bar at 4 a.m.
Once again, I leveled up my ability in motorbiking. My new challenge was riding a manual bike, which was easier than I thought it would be. It was still a pretty small bike, and it didn’t have a clutch to shift gears, although the foot brake took some getting used to as I had only dealt with handbrakes up until now. It was also the worst bike that I’d rented. One of the mirrors was loose and I couldn’t get it to stay in its place. Neither the speedometer nor the gas gauge worked, but this wasn’t much of a problem. Duma has a lot of gas stations, and like the rest of Southeast Asia, extremely lax traffic law enforcement.
On to the pics!

Miguel July 9th, 2012, 05:08 AM mga higala.. naa pay whale sa BAIS CITY?ty:cheers::cheers::cheers:
Yes, naa pay whales sa Tanon Strait near Bais City. Although, unlike their other cetacean relatives, the dolphins, they are not present the whole year round as these are migratory creatures. Studies found different species of whales migrate within these waters during certain months of the year; melon headed whales, short finned pilot whales, pygmy sperm whales, pygmy killer whales and dwarf sperm whales. There are also butandings (whale sharks) who pass by but local government prohibits feeding any of the mentioned marine creatures so don't expect them to stay long in these waters, except for the dolphins, who already considered this place as their home.

http://www.cebusmile.com/images/2011/dec/009.jpg
IT’S WEDNESDAY night in Dumaguete, and there is an involved conversation going on around the table. There are drinks, of course, and they are fast dwindling as the night wears on. “Were they summoned?” someone says, and quickly a small debate starts to flurry up around the question. There are books as well: the group is doing a close reading of Hamlet, poring over it line by line and figuring things out as they go.
Here, tonight, is a microcosm of Dumaguete. Just as the city is centered around Silliman University, the group meets in the sala of the president’s house on the fringes of the spacious grounds, not far from the boulevard. The people in attendance are an eclectic mix of locals, foreigners and balikbayans, professors and students, business owners and retirees.
The reading group was organized as a way to fill up time on a weekday, to socialize and find intellectually stimulating conversation with like- minded people. In a way, it’s the kind of thing that’s really only possible in a place like Dumaguete — a cultural hub that takes its learning very seriously, sophisticated enough for a reading group, quiet enough so that people have time for it.
Outside, at 10pm, the city is still awake, though to call it “bustling” would be a stretch. Although Dumaguete is the capital, the largest city, and the main entry point by sea and by air to the rest of Negros Oriental, “laid-back” is still about the most common adjective you’ll hear about it. There is a fantastic vibrancy and youthfulness to the place, as any university town would have, but it’s all tempered with small-town reticence that allows it to hum along rather quietly, letting it retain a great deal of hometown charm even as the world comes to its doorstep.
Artists’ choice
“Dumaguete has become a hub of artists from all over the country, perhaps because of the influence of Silliman and other universities that promote creative and arts opportunities for students and visitors,” agrees Virginia Maja-Stack, a balikbayan retiree who now writes a column for the Dumaguete Metro Post. “And I certainly think that it also has something to do with the people’s attitude here, are open to new initiatives and creative forms.”
Spend any amount of time in Dumaguete, and it will be impossible not to stumble upon the wellsprings of creativity that run deep in the city. Dumaguete is still synonymous with the annual National Writers’ Workshop that’s been run by Silliman for decades
now, and which count among its generations of fellows a great number of the country’s literary elite. But creativity in many forms runs rampant. In a short visit there, I was able to meet a world-class Japanese ceramic artist, Takeshi Maruyama — a teacher at the Foundation University who, with the help of photographer Hersley Ven Casero, is putting together a proposal to install 100 of his pieces around town. I also spoke to Diane Pool, an American who has settled in the community of Tambobo Bay, just outside
Dumaguete, where she has helped put up a couple of schoolhouses for the children of Siaton. With some like- minded friends, she is hoping to turn part of the foundation’s offices into an artists’ retreat, which will help fund their work in the schoolhouses.
And there does seem to be a strong impetus towards connections, both towards the community in Dumaguete and outward, drawing people towards the place. Maja-Stack herself is involved in a pilot project with New York-based restaurateur and food writer Amy Besa, Manila’s Enderun Colleges, and Silliman University to create community kitchens to teach nutrition and sustainable eating.
Indeed, this kind of involvement in community-oriented projects speaks to residents’ genuine affection for Dumaguete. It is the kind of place that draws out this kind of enthusiastic, innovative involvement: small enough to remain personal and manageable, big enough that it is able to attract and absorb people from all over and the worldly influence they bring. The latest census figures put the population of Dumaguete at just over 116,000 — still relatively tiny by urban standards. The population grows, bit by little bit, with perhaps a disproportionate number of intelligent, interesting, committed people among them.
Constant learning
Partly it’s the way the city was built, with the city hall and the spacious public park at the heart of it, abutted by the open grounds of Silliman University. The east border of the town is a wide beachfront promenade that overlooks the calm expanse of Dumaguete Bay, with Siquijor looming in the distance. The beachfront strip is called Rizal Boulevard — it was Jose Rizal himself, they say, who first called Dumaguete “the city of gentle people” — and [B]the Dumaguete version should be the envy of its Manila counterpart. This is a seaside boulevard that works: accessible to the city’s residents, clean and well-maintained, pleasant and beloved.
The establishments over on the other side of the wide street also say something about the charms of Dumaguete. Silliman Hall is at one end, signaling the beginning of a row of boutique hotels, restaurants and bars, with the odd office building or two thrown in. Only here, perhaps, can you find something like the surprisingly sophisticated Casablanca delicatessen and restaurant — which is attached to the Dumaguete Academy of Culinary Arts and offers a globe-trotting array of dishes — a few doors down from Pirate Bay, which is as much of a dive as its name suggests.

jundem_dq63 July 11th, 2012, 09:05 AM ‘Diversion road funds downgraded’
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE
The multi-million peso diversion road project in Dumaguete City has been downgraded, at least for this year, Mayor Manuel Sagarbarria said after his attendance to the Regional Development Council 7 meeting recently.
The proposed Bacong-Dumaguete-Sibulan diversion road is 20 meters wide and is estimated to cost P360 million.
Works in certain portions of the proposed diversion road was started during the time of then mayor and late Gov. Agustin Perdices, using local funds to ease the flow of traffic in the commercial district.
Sagarbarria said he was assured by the Department of Budget and Management early this year that at least P100 million was ready to start the project.
“(But) such funding could not be found this year,” he added.
City Hall insiders believed something fishy is going on as the midterm 2013 election draws near, like what happened to the first 50 percent of the calamity fund already given to Negros Oriental but was withdrawn by DBM.
This year, P5 million was allotted for the rehabilitation of Banica River and another P5 million for Okoy River in the Dumaguete side, Sagarbarria said.
He added that with regard the proposed diversion road, funding was downgraded as second priority and the project may be implemented in 2013 or in 2014 yet.*JG

Good enough. Libre lang baya. We are not one of those LGUs that are heavily subsidized by the national gov't.

Do you mean the lot with a green fence? I believe they're just moving the downtown branch instead of opening a 3rd one. The Santillan Optical branch beside them at Locsin will also be vacated (the former will move to a large space near Cafe Laguna). It looks like they've been asked to move out of that bldg...so who's taking over?

jundem_dq63 July 12th, 2012, 01:27 AM Buglasan: Negros Oriental Festival of Festivals
In olden times the island of Negros was referred to as Buglas, after the tall reeds that predominated. A map said to have been drawn by Diego Lope Povedano dated 1572 shows an island named BUGLAS INSULIS. The crewmen of Miguel Lopez de Legaspi, while anchored in Bohol in 1572, reconnoitered Buglas and encountered dark-skinned natives. They renamed the island NEGROS.
In 1981 Foundation University and the Balikatan sa Kaunlaran of Negros Oriental, upon consultations with Bayanihan founder-choreographer Lucresia Reyes-Urtula, organized an activity that would choose the performing group to represent the province in the National Folk Arts Festival of Mrs. Imelda Marcos. The activity was called “Buglasan” in memory of the island’s beginnings, its early cultural character.
Buglasan was dormant for many years until 1990, when it was revived as part of Negros Oriental’s centennial as a province. Buglasan was applied to the entire celebration. It has since evolved into a “Festival of Festivals,” bringing together the finest street dancing contingents of Negros Oriental’s twenty established festivals for a day of competitions.
These festivals are highlights of fiestas everywhere in the province. Two of these are school-based: the relatively new HUGYAWAN DALANSAYAW of Central Visayas Polytechnic College, and the KASADYA-AN December Festival of Foundation University, at over 50 years the longest-running Mardi gras of Negros Oriental. Along with the SANDUROT and SANTACRUZAN Festivals of Dumaguete City, TAWO-TAWO (scarecrow) of Bayawan, YAG-YAG (egg-scattering on the shoreline by certain sea creatures) of Cangmating, SIPONG of Bais City, and BANGON FESTIVAL of Bacong these festivals are secular (non-religious) in nature. The rest are based on legends surrounding local patron saints and religious practices: GAPNOD of Sibulan, SAULOG FESTIVAL of Tanjay City, SINULOG DE JIMALALUD, LIBOD- SAYAW of Bindoy, KANGLAMBAT of Vallehermoso, LANGUB FESTIVAL of Mabinay, PASAYAW of Canlaon City, AYUQUITAN of San Jose, BUDYAS of Amlan, PAKOL FESTIVAL of Santa Catalina, PASALAMAT FESTIVAL of Valencia, BAULAN FESTIVAL of Zamboanguita, INAGTA FESTIVAL of Siaton, and KINA-IYAHAN FESTIVAL of Dauin.
The Buglasan Festival of Festivals brings all these together for a “one-stop shop” of Negros Oriental’s festivals, experienced in all their pageantry and color in one day of fellowship and merrymaking.
Almost every month, colorful special events unreel somewhere in the province. These festivals are highlights of fiestas everywhere in the province that could be secular (non-religious) in nature. The rest are based on legends surrounding local patron saints and religious practices.

Details Published on Thursday, 12 July 2012 00:00
Three years after it opened in the capital city of Negros Oriental, Robinsons Place Dumaguete has become a prime destination among locals and tourists. At the start of this year, property developer Robinsons Land Corp. (RLC) undertook an enhancement program with the addition of the new al fresco area, where one can enjoy the lush landscapes while dining at the different restaurants situated in this area.
Robinsons Place Dumaguete’s al fresco area offers a wide array of restaurants including Mooon Café, Sunburst Fried Chicken, Hukad sa Golden Cowrie, Dong Juan, Kalikasan Café, and Bo’s Coffee.
Further enhancing the appeal of Robinsons Place Dumaguete is the latest branch of gohotels.ph, the value hotel brand of Robinsons Land that has become very popular among local and foreign tourists for the quality services and amenities the hotel provides minus the high cost. It is situated mere steps away from the mall’s al fresco area, which makes the various excellent offerings of Robinsons Place Dumaguete easily accessible to hotel guests.
To make everything more convenient for customers, a new transport terminal has just been constructed at Robinsons Place Dumaguete. This is situated near the al fresco area and gohotel.ph.
“This transport terminal was built in partnership with various transport groups. It is our way of helping the Government alleviate traffic while at the same time providing better service to our shoppers and mall goers,” said Arlene Magtibay, RLC General Manager for Commercial Centers Division.

I'd say the best Robinsons mall now (beating even those in Metro Manila, never mind the very expensive tenants), with its huge frontage, the best landscaping, and just wide open spaces (compared to Manila's congested surroundings). Probably the most relaxing wide open space mall with complete amenities and beautiful surroundings.

jundem_dq63 July 13th, 2012, 12:13 AM Gohotels.ph invitation: Explore Dumaguete City
MANILA, Philippines - Dumaguete City in Negros Oriental has a charm that’s distinctly its own. Unlike other destinations in the country, its unspoiled terrains, inviting diving spots, and general sense of beauty invoke the appreciation for nature of both visitors and locals.
This natural charm has made Dumaguete a place for the arts — luring artists and poets alike to explore and find their muse in the seemingly virgin island. Its raw beauty cloaks the destination with a certain mystique, and people are truly more than willing to unravel its mysteries.
Dumaguete is also considered a university city, as it is the home of the Visayas’ top institution — Silliman University.
