This is because of the high demand for commercial spaces in this prime spot in the city. The additional floor will also have a foodcourt. nicko August 3rd, 2007, 07:15 PM wew.. just watched TRIP na TRIP.. they featured Bais' Dolphin and Whale watching, Apo Island, Atlantis Beach Resort (which has one of the best restos in Asia as it has always been dubbed with multi-national chefs), Mabilnay Caves (100+ caves all in all, 52 are explored, and only about 5 are for tourist spelunking.. one of those is Odlomon cave, the 2nd longest cave in Phils), Twin Lakes, Balanan Lake, Casaroro Falls, Forest Camp, Negros Or. Arts and Heritage, Oriental Gifts, GiftsFashion, Sea Forest, SU, downtown area, Dgte hotels and moree.. too many to mention..;) and yeah, i have just noticed that Living Asia channel has been frequently featuring Dumaguete and Negros Oriental almost everyday with Ms. Patricia Evangelista as host when she stayed here for a month or so.. Pretty good news for our place.. With good exposure, tourism will surely rise esp that the province has just been part of the world's 20 best islands to live!! nicko August 3rd, 2007, 07:18 PM The Portal West building (Silliman's university mall) has been modified to accommodate an additional floor, so it will now have four floors (five if we will include the mezzanine floor). Thanks for your comments. That is probably because people here are more concerned about environmental protection. add to that, most people here are educated, that's why they place a lot of importance on cleanliness. @Nicko: I saw several segments of Dumaguete/Oriental Negros videos on Living Asia Channel with Patricia Evangelista as the narrator. He noted that there are two huge big springs are located in Sitio Danapa, Barangay Nangka, while Barangay Malabugas is home to the Hab-haban Cave. SugarFreak August 11th, 2007, 02:55 AM 08/10/07 SU acquires cinema equipment (http://www.visayandailystar.com/2007/August/10/negor2.htm) Cinema equipment valued at approximately P1 million was donated by the family of Don Serafin Lajato Teves, well-known pillars of the business community in Dumaguete City, to Silliman University yesterday. This is in time for the celebration of the 106th Founders Day of the SU this month. The deed of donation was signed between Vicente Teves, one of the heirs of Don Serafin Teves and representing S.L. Teves Inc., and Dr. Ben Malayang, president of Silliman. The equipment, purchased in the United States about half a century ago, came from the old Park Theater, a historic landmark in Dumaguete, whose building is now leased to a department store. The antique movie projection system, which is still usable, includes cine apparatus, cine amplifier assembly, speaker buffle assembly, high frequency speakers, and surround speakers. These are now housed at the Luce Auditorium and the Multimedia Center of Silliman to be used as tools to enhance the teaching-learning atmosphere on campus through discourses based on educational projections. Malayang also announced that the family of Don Serafin Teves will be inducted into the Order of Horace Brinsmade Silliman in fitting rites during the Founders Day celebrations. Starting this year and every Founders Day, friends, benefactors, and alumni of Silliman who have contributed to its operations by way of donations and scholarships will be immortalized into the Order of Horace Silliman, as gratitude of the university for their generosity.*RG ritche August 11th, 2007, 06:24 AM Something great will happen to Silliman U. this Founders Day, and everybody who have internet access can see it...Watch for it guys!!! @Cebuano Exultor: I haven't been to the NOPH in the past few months. Excuse me, it's not 6, it's seven (7)...With regards, to Gov. Garcia's admission that the public healthcare system here is better than in Cebu, it yielded quite positive results in that an alliance between Negros Oriental and Cebu involving not just healthcare system, but even in governance and economy were formed after her visit to the province last week. That's according to today's issue of MetroPost. One very reliable source hinted that GoNuts Donuts will be opening here in Dumaguete. Maybe in Robinsons Place. Gonuts Donuts, IMO, is really the best although it is a little expensive. I like its holeless donuts that has yema and those milky ingredients inside. nicko August 12th, 2007, 08:05 AM ^^ yeah, ur right.. it's not 6 but 7.. i did not realize that they have a branch at ceres liner terminal.. i was about to update it.. sorry. Miguel August 13th, 2007, 05:21 AM ^^ This is pure bull**** coming from our governor. I've been to both hospitals and, trust me, the Negros Oriental Provincial Hospital is in a worse state. I totally disagree! Enough proof is the current controversy of Vicente Sotto, a hospital run by a corrupt management. In terms of the acquisition of medicine of medical supplies, more have come from direct purchase than biddings which is totally in contrast of the concept of acquiring the best quality at the lowest price. Reason why? There are lots of activities going on under the table, medical distributors wanted to have exclusive purchases on their products. Much worse than that, there are even ghost purchases. Right now, Vicente Sotto is in a hot seat of the newspaper dailies and bugged by a corruption scandal. How do I personally know about this? My girlfriend is a med rep and in countless times I've been in both hospitals. There are certain companies indeed in which Vicente Hospital have favorites and would directly purchase from them even though their brands are low in quality. And sometimes, even she is the lowest bidder, it would still be awarded to certain companies. Compared to the Provincial Hospital which they would really prefer the high quality brands that could be of best use to their patients. The advantage I could think of Vicente Sotto is the mere size and funding (which went to the pockets of some). ritche August 13th, 2007, 05:32 AM Guys, the thing that we've been waiting for: Silliman is going to redesign its website. Provincial engineer Susano Ruperto said funds from a loan with a local bank and the IRA were used for building the NOCC. The loan, however, was exhausted this month, and the amount for the construction of a hotel and restaurant within the complex will have to be sourced from the IRA of the province, or when the national government decides to extend financial assistance. The NOCC broke ground in September 2005 and is now 97 percent completed. The twin-projects were initiated during the term of former Gov. George Arnaiz, now the congressman representing the second district. Ruperto quoted Gov. Emilio Macias as saying that the province would no longer borrow money for the completion of the hotel. Aside from the 1,200-seater convention center, the facility is complemented by a four-storey hotel, with the lobby and restaurant on the ground floor and 45 rooms in the next three levels. Apprehensions, however, were raised on the possibility that the structure would become a "white elephant," or of no use unless its operation is given to the private sector, which can spend huge funds for its maintenance and operating costs. Ruperto said, though, that the NOCC is already in use, being booked for weddings, conventions, and anniversaries, among others. But it's not enough, privatization of the facility is preferred, including the creation of a board of management, he also said.*JG jaywalker August 20th, 2007, 06:55 PM PNP Center groundbreaking held BY MARICAR ARANAS The ground-breaking rites for the construction of the Negros Oriental PNP-Community Multi-Purpose Center was held Friday, at the Camp Fernandez Headquarters in Agan-an. Sources close to the ports authority told the CHRONICLE that in Manila, the PPA conducted postqualification inspection and found out certain defects in the equipment and capabilities of the lowest bidder Atlantic Erectors Inc who bidded P43-million for the passenger terminal. The second lowest bidder, the PERRC Constsruction which bid P48-million might get the final award in the everelusive passenger terminal. The PPA sources said that there are still minor hitches in its realization such as the following: The passenger terminal which will be located in front of the Coast Guard Station is now being used as its open cargo base area. The drive kicked off during a meeting of the Liga ng mga Barangay, where Mayor Antonio Renacia, with the Integrated Solid Waste Management Technical Working Group, briefed barangay captains on the plan of the local government to promote barangay-based solid waste management. Renacia said the information education campaign is directed at creating change in the attitude of people. He also said this program will transfer eventually the responsibility of collecting garbage to the barangays. He added that the locality cannot effectively impose the campaign, and collection and segregation of wastes should start in the barangay. The program promotes segregation and barangays will have a source of income, the mayor said. Barangay captains present at the meeting said they will consult their constituents on the matter first.*RG jaywalker August 21st, 2007, 07:30 PM Tuesday, August 21, 2007 Dumaguete to showcase locally made E-jeep By Erwin Ambo S. He said these companies indicated interest in exploring gold and copper deposits in Basay, a town about 130 kilometers of Dumaguete City. Vergara said the mining firms may also be interested in exploring iron ore, sulfur and manganese deposits in the towns of Amlan, San Jose, Pamplona and Manjuyod. The Supreme Court has upheld the constitutionality of the Mining Act of 1995, and administration of President Gloria Arroyo indicated its willingness to allow these firms to invest in the country, he added. The massive demand for mining products from China and other countries paved the way for mining concessionaires to find potential sites in the Philippines, Vergara said. He also said a three-day annual Visayan Mining Congress will be hosted by Region 7 on September 6 to 8, to be attended by 200 mayors and governors from Regions 6, 7 and 8. Other attendees are mining executives and Environment and Natural Resources officials headed by Environment Secretary Lito Atienza.*RA nicko August 24th, 2007, 04:46 AM SILLIMAN UNIVERSITY 106th FOUNDING ANNIVERSARY ::special page:: nicko August 24th, 2007, 04:53 AM Luce Auditorium to undergo facelift CLARE ISABEL MCGILL LUCE AUDITORIUM http://p.vtourist.com/1390609-Things_To_Do-Dumaguete_City.jpg http://img100.imageshack.us/img100/6641/sulucexa0.jpg The finest performing arts auditorium outside Manila. Started under the administration of SU President Cicero Calderon the facility was finally inaugurated on October 6, 1974 and was dedicated to the memory of Claire Isabel McGill Luce, wife of Henry Luce III, President of the Henry Luce Foundation Incorporated. The 923-seater Luce Auditorium which cost Php 4.7 million to build is considered as the "CPP of the Visayas" that hosted several presentations by popular foreign and local artists and performing groups. Anyway, the electric vehicle made in Dumaguete will be unveiled soon. Watch out for it this coming August 28. In my own projection, this will become a bigger hit than the bigger Greenpeace Electric jeep because there are still a lot of deficiencies in the latter, and it's made in China. There'd be difficulty in sourcing the spare parts. This one is locally made, so there should be no problem in so far as getting the spare parts and accessories. The Buglasan Village in Piapi is actually named the "Sidlakang Negros Village Showroom and Trade Center," if I remember it right. @Nicko: Price, coffee and food is okey. I'd give it a higher rating than Cafe Antonio. The only down side is that the place is definitely smaller. It's compensated, however, by the superb ambience and the elegance of the place. And the cleanliness as well. Regarding the Portal West building, if they could open a boutique of high end apparels such as Guess and Giordano, then I would call it the "Ayala Dumaguete version". But as it is right now, it's not bad. STED's is a convinience store but WITH a resto, fastfood, bar and sometimes, a club. pretty confusing, ryt?.. hehe.. its kind of a place where it has many subdivisions. Like in STED's SU, it has a convenience store and also a part for foodcourt with donut, shawarma, waffle, hotdogs, grill, shake joints and more (e.g. Thirsty, Mister Donuts, Outbox, Waffle King, etc, etc..) so it also therefore a fastfood.. Meanwhile, it has also a courtyard where grilled menus, coffee, pizzas, pastas are served so para na ring resto.. and both area (courtyard, foodcourt) are sometimes converted in to a dancefloor for clubbing, acoustic nights, etc.. It has also a bakeshop for pastries and more.. thats basically the concept and we have many STED's around the city.. umm.. pic? hope ritche can provide.. hehe nicko August 26th, 2007, 03:38 PM http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/8726/bandshk3.jpg more to this, PEDICAB and CALLALILY are joining in!! The other component of the mall-hotel-trade hall complex is not included in that summation. The trade hall would add another 3,000 sqms, and the 100 room hotel would add another considerable amount of space (or the 46,000 already include the trade hall - 43,000 plus 3,000). And this building will occupy only about 2/3 of the whole 6 hectares Robinsons lot here. The size of our Robinson's is even close to that of Robinsons Sta. Rosa and Los Banos combined. This means that Robinsons Dumaguete will be bigger than Robinsons Place Bacolod when the latter first opened doors ten years ago. It is revealed that Korean population in the Philippines this time is about 900,000 and it would not be surprising if they reach over a million in the remaining months of this year since there are about 8500 Koreans enter the country on weekly basis. Chuang said PAL officials recently conducted an ocular inspection of the Sibulan-Dumaguete airport and its facilities, but have not yet scheduled the resumption of flights. She said she will meet with PAL officials this month to discuss the details. In the past, the country's flag carrier was the only airline servicing Dumaguete until it stopped its Manila-Dumaguete flights and vice versa in June of 1998. Before other airlines - Cebu Pacific and Air Philippines - launched their flights in Dumaguete, passengers commuters had to go either to Cebu or Bacolod to take flights to Manila, Chuang said. She said the return of PAL to Dumaguete is a welcome with the increasing volume of passengers and cargo coming in and going out of Negros Oriental. Traffic at the Dumaguete airport has increased significantly, Chuang added.*PNA nicko September 4th, 2007, 01:33 AM ^^ nice! if that plan will push through, then it would mean we will have three airlines to serve us.. Hopefully this will be remedied with the expansion of the airport, which I heard will also include the construction of a new passenger terminal. ritche September 4th, 2007, 04:32 AM Perhaps by next year, a bigger mall will open in Dumaguete City. This is expected to draw in crowds of shoppers not only from Dumaguete but from the nearby towns and provinces, to include southern Cebu, Siquijor and Zamboanga del Norte. And as we await the opening of this mall, its main rival has been rumored to be negotiating for a lot (read: SM), as they would also want to open in Dumaguete very soon. There's something about these malls that amaze me. They don't just hold on to one location, no matter how profitable that location may be. In fact, they keep on sprouting in areas where new communities are being built. And with each new mall comes huge fortunes for its owners. I agree the more airline the better for the local economy of Dumaguete and for the consumers.I think Air Philippines cannot compete as Low Cost Carrier with Cebu Pacific in this sector that's why PAL is coming on the way aside from the reason that Dumaguete is becoming an attractive and recognized by the investors and tourist alike.PAL and Air Philippines are both managed by Lucio Tan Group of Companies.Air Philippines is a Low Cost Carrier while PAL represents as Premium Airline. nicko September 4th, 2007, 06:47 AM Perhaps by next year, a bigger mall will open in Dumaguete City. Full story here (http://www.visayandailystar.com/2007/September/01/alexpal.htm). I'm not surprised. Lisa Kircher-Lumbao, manager of the Local Initiatives for Affordable Wastewater Treatment Project of the United States Agency for International Development, said there are only three or four cities in the Philippines that have a wastewater treatment plant for its public market. "Compared to the other cities, Dumaguete is the only one to have a fully natural treatment system that is beautifully landscaped with flowers and plants," she added in a statement sent through e-mail. Lumbao said the natural treatment makes it much more affordable to operate and easy to maintain, so many other cities from the Philippines and other Asian countries will be coming to visit it so they can replicate it in their own city. She said LINAW will bring some visitors to Dumaguete in the coming months for a familiarization tour of the wastewater treatment plant, at the children's playground of the Quezon Park. Despite all these, the City Council is still pushing to have Lumbao and other local officials appear during today's regular session to shed light on what some quarters believe is a defective project. Complaints and criticisms have surfaced regarding the project, such as children deprived of playground space, bad smell emanating from the treatment plant and even the location itself. But, Lumbao said having the treatment facility in the park is actually an advantage because people can become aware of it and learn from it. Many others in Dumaguete, such as hotels, resorts, hospitals, and many others should also replicate this facility before the Department of Environment and Natural Resources shuts them down for violating water discharge standards, Lumbao pointed out. Lumbao noted that if there were objections to the project, these should have been raised before the City Council had approved it and before construction started in January. "Now it is already built so cannot be moved. Our engineer (of LINAW) was not involved in the site selection or detailed engineering, but in his opinion it is a good site and good design. He believes it will work well," Lumbao said. On allegations that some people could have made money out of this project, Lumbao said "the cost of the project was much lower than similar projects we have been involved in, so I doubt there was any money available for anyone to pocket as alleged". Lumbao said she could not make it to the City Council session today as they at LINAW are very busy with a new project. LINAW will expand their project to four new cities in the country as USAID is very happy with the success (in the implementation of previous projects like the one in Dumaguete) that "we are giving more money", Lumbao said. The City Council has asked former Vice-Mayor William Ablong, Market Enterprises Officer Ronald Fortin, Environment and Natural Resources Officer Rolly Clamonte and City Planning Officer Josephine Antonio to shed more light on the project during this afternoon's regular council session. *JG Web www.visayandailystar.com ritche September 6th, 2007, 03:41 PM anyways, ritch, are ur Miracle Mile pics ready?..:) oooppsss!!! somebody might have deleted my pics from the digital cam. am not sure if i could post a pic of miracle mile this week. Calderon said the PPA national office has notified them of the winning bidder to undertake the construction. The building of a passenger terminal was initiated by former governor and now Rep. George Arnaiz and Dumaguete Mayor Agustin Perdices. During the last Regional Development Council Meeting, Perdices inquired from the PPA about the status of the terminal, whose construction has long been overdue. The terminal will be built in front of the Bureau of Customs and Philippine Coast Guard offices. Calderon said the original proposed budget for the building was P55 million, but the winning bidder had it at P47 million. The building design is the same, though. Meanwhile, an arrastre and stevedoring company will start operating at the Dumaguete port Sept. 10. Prudential Customs Brokerage Services Incorporated will be handling all stevedores and cargo handling at the port, Calderon said. The PPA has taken over the management of the Cipres Stevedoring and Arrastre, four years after its shutdown due to labor disputes. Calderon said the bidding was held in December 2006, but because of unseen problems and the election ban, the winner was not awarded by the PPA until January this year.*MA ritche September 7th, 2007, 02:07 PM September 7, 2007 Local PPA terminal construction slated (http://www.visayandailystar.com/2007/September/07/negor2.htm) BY MARICAR ARANAS This is definitely a good development. :applause: :applause: jaywalker September 7th, 2007, 03:08 PM Whoa! It wasn’t a last-ditch effort to catch up on a summer getaway. Although it was great fun, indeed, it was also a grueling four-day discovery of the inherent beauty of our own beloved country made possible by Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) and held from May 31 to June 3 in those scenic, getaway resort islands. Entitled the “Toyota Road Trek 3,” the adventure was for the motoring media. The fun and excitement were more than enough for a first-timer to the said event. It was rather short but very fulfilling, and this writer would really like to thank the organizers for inviting and having us as one of the “road-trek warriors.” The Toyota people really organized it very well—from the event challenges to road travel up to the food and room accommodations. This writer was amazed that there were 42 participants aside from the observers and officials. Toyota executives who accompanied the group were Santos Guerrero, TMP EVP for marketing; Danny Isla, FVP for marketing; Raymond Rodriguez and Jing Atienza, who are VPs for vehicle sales; Atty. Rommel Gutierrez, VP for management services office and corporate planning group; Motonori Oshima, VP for customers service operations; and Sherwin Chua-Lim, AVP for sales distribution department of the vehicle sales operations. Their support staff were also excellent in the speedy facilitation of our needs from the various event stations up to the airport. http://img521.imageshack.us/img521/9874/motorpic011ak4.jpg THEFortuners, Hi-Luxes and Innovas waiting for the "road trek warriors" at the parking of Bahura Resort & Spa in Dumaguete. --ANDY SEVILLA This writer was with his colleague in this publication, Ira Panganiban, and we were bunched with Auto Extreme’s Ardie Lopez and Joselu Romualdez in a team that went head-to-head with nine other quartets in the three-event challenge. The heated dispute involved a kayaking relay race in the scenic and serene waters of the Balinsasayao Twin Lakes in Oriental Negros; rappelling at the Niludhan Falls in the City of Bayawan, also in Oriental Negros; and the snorkeling and diving at the picture-perfect Apo Island in Dumaguete. To make known that the whole event was really a “wet and wild road trek,” we were ordered to be in our wetsuits as much as possible, even before we boarded the plane for the one-hour trip to Dumaguete airport. Right after embarking, the convoy of various Toyota vehicles, such as Fortuners, Hi-Luxes and Innovas, zoomed ahead for the almost one-hour drive to Balinsasayao National Park. This writer was really hooked with kayaking on his the first time out on one of the Twin Lakes. The weather was great and the air temperature hovered around 23 to 25 degrees Centigrade, while the water was relatively cool. Yes, this writer has no experience swimming in deep waters but the allure of immersing oneself was so great that he immediately said “yes” when nominated as one of the three participants from our team. Ira was the one who “shot” videos and photographs from the shore. This writer immediately learned how to handle the paddles “like a feather” and how to push the other side when one side is in the water. This writer was fourth among the 10 kayakers in the first buoy-station where he was replaced by another teammate. Our team placed eighth overall in the said event. All stomachs were grumbling when we got out of the water and rain started to fall. We were ushered into a nearby clearing where three big tents served as shelter as we partook of a very hearty meal consisting of tinola soup, beef caldereta, fried shrimps and squids. As I noticed that my sandal was broken—the first casualty of the rigorous initial challenge—the organizer announced that the second stage was coming up within the next two hours while we drove to Bayawan City, where the Niludhan Falls is situated. That second stage was the most exciting and dangerous of them all. Ira begged off and I seconded the motion, leaving our teammates Ardie and Joselu no other option but to do the rappelling from 180 feet high, where the waters of the falls start, and then jump the remaining 30 feet. Ira and this writer became the “rescuers” and we waited for them in the muddy waters below. We did fairly well in that event. We did say that it was dangerous, right? Being the rescuers also took a lot of guts as we had to wade in the chocolate-colored water and stay there until we had rescued our two colleagues. The current was so strong that this writer sustained two deep cuts on his right foot from razor-sharp stones while fighting to stay in position. Most of those who rappelled also had gashes on their arms and feet. This writer also had a severe headache, which was earlier mistaken for high blood pressure. This writer took the wheel of the Fortuner from that place, while three of his battle-weary colleagues slept it out for most of the two-and-a-half-hour trek to the spacious Bahura Resort & Spa back in Dumaguete. After dinner and a welcome program beside the swimming pool, the “warriors” quietly slipped into their rooms for a much-needed body massage to soothe their weary bodies. Those who were really thirsty for the booze and more camaraderie partied up to the wee hours of the morning. Feeling refreshed and rejuvenated, the “warriors” were ushered into two waiting boats, which brought them to the nearby Apo Island—a 40-minute ride from the shore located off the coast of Dauin and situated in the Mindanao Sea. It is 72 hectares of volcanic rock island, which was converted into a marine sanctuary in 1985 by Silliman University. Now this writer knows why this is considered the diving mecca of the country and one of the best diving sites in Asia and also “regarded as the second largest in the world.” The group spent more than five hours of stay there, where the third and the easiest challenge took place. It was Joselu who dove for the key of the Innova, which we took from Dumaguete to Cebu via a Roro ship of the Maayo Shipping Line. Getting the most out of our stay in that island, this writer, Al Mendoza, Ron de los Reyes and several others didn’t go to the nearby fish sanctuary with the main group. We stayed in the water for several hours for snorkeling, kayaking and swimming before another hearty lunch was served near the beach. After eating like hungry wolves, we plunged once more into the inviting waters until we packed up 2 in the afternoon. The Innova was already waiting for us when we got back to Bahura Resort & Spa and we immediately left on a convoy for Cebu. Yes, it was a long drive but the whole group stayed as one as we cruised the highways at more than 100 kph. We arrived at the Marco Polo Hotel at around 8 in the evening and attended the welcome dinner hosted by Alfred Ty, Toyota vice chairman and top officer of the elegant Marco Polo Hotel. It was there when our editor, Popong Andolong, joined us. A poker game in one of the function rooms punctuated our night before the following morning’s 18-hole golf game at the Cebu Golf & Country Club. While the whole group of trekkers transferred to Mactan and billeted to the popular Maribago Bluewaters and Resort for the much-needed R&R, that Saturday was a great one for all the golf enthusiasts. Yes, we survived the sweltering heat of the sun but, naaaah, don’t ask me how I did, huh! Popong, this writer, as well as our flight mates Raymond Rodriguez and Atty. Gutierrez, really enjoyed the game and the good company. The awarding ceremony was conducted later in the evening near the beach and it was one helluva night for all the participants as foods and drinks flowed. As expected, another round of poker punctuated the night, which was won by Mr. Isla. Talk of “Road Trek 4” has begun as early as now and many are already packing their bags for next year! The Portal West is, in fact, personifies how Silliman University (over the years) have slowly declined into ever more mediocrity. Fact: Food outlets at Portal West's second floor [Case in Point: Miracle Mile] aren't allowed to cook inside the building because there is a non-existent emergency springkler system. Jeez, if they can't afford to spend for such, they should, at least, provide for fire extinguishers. nicko September 18th, 2007, 02:58 AM ^^ So Jumong's food are not cooked inside their resto??.. Im completely unaware of the fact u stated. Pobably they just don't want to risk having stores using fuel and fire inside or else Portal West would just end up down to ground zero in ashes if accidents will happen. Sayang ang "gift from the alumni.." Having none of those operations will surely be a lot safer for the building.. But even if there were no food outlets, I still say SU's Portal West is something not very usual right now here in the city. The tenants arent so bad... And im pretty sure if there are no emergency sprinklers installed, then there should be fire extinguishers. Isnt it required in all commercial establishments? Im sure they are aware about that and are doing something about it.................. ritche September 18th, 2007, 05:46 AM FYI, Portal West Building is made only of non-combustible materials such as steel, hardiflex, glass and a little concrete. Most buildings are made mostly of heavy concrete and steel bars. I guess they made it intentional to be like this. Hardiflex is a fire-retardant material. Portal West uses a modern construction method which reduces the total weight of the building, and easier should the building be renovated since those hardiflex divisions can be easily removed. I guess this also reduces the cost of the building without sacrificing its durability and quality. I am not sure if a sprinkler system is needed for the building. Cooking will be allowed at the top floor where the foodcourt will be located. I heard that they will make some adjustments with the design of the Portal East building with their experiences with the Portal West, but the design will essentially be the same: a modern and architecturally pleasing edifice in downtown Dumaguete which would contribute to the city's modernist outlook and symbolize the future of Silliman University. averatec3200 September 18th, 2007, 10:10 AM Any news on when will the construction of Portal East Building start? Tourism Secretary Joseph Ace Durano said Negros Oriental joined the list of other exotic places such as the Grand Cayman, Gozo in Malta, Carriacou in Grenada and Vieques in Puerto Rico, which all offer a mix of indigenous culture, friendly neighbors, uncomplicated living and adventure attractions.... But more than the attractions, Durano said the people play a big role in giving a warm welcome and creating a positive impression among travelers. “Negros Oriental being recognized as one of the best islands to live speaks of an exceptionally hospitable experience that makes people want to stay for the long haul,” Durano pointed out. Governor Emilio Macias II proposed for the postponement of the Buglasan activities sometime in June, according to Abellana. She said the governor saw significance to hold the province’s festival in December. It was on the 1st of January that the separation of the two islands — Negros Oriental and Negros Occidental — took place. Abellana said it is for this reason that the governor wanted to culminate the activity on January 1. New name and venue The festival will no longer be called Buglasan Festivals of Festival. Instead, it will be named Buglas Festival. “The change in name was to differentiate it from the Buglasan in October,” said Abellana. Negros Island was originally named “Buglas.” But the Spaniards changed it to Negros because of the Negritos (dark-skinned people) that inhabited the island. The activities though for the Buglas Festival are more or less the same with the events lined up for the previously held Buglasan Festivals. Abellana also said the Sidlakang Negros Village will be the new site of the Buglas Festival. The Buglasan Festival is usually being held at the Capitol grounds. Participating local government units (LGUs) in the Buglasan Festival before would have to build their booths (a temporary structure) at the Capitol grounds with a budget of P50,000. This year though in the Buglas Festival, the Macias administration has decided to construct permanent structures, where the LGUs can display their products. “All they (participating LGUs of Buglas Festival) have to do now is to beautify the structures and set up their products there,” said Abellana. A total of 25 booths are planned to be built at the Sidlakang Negros Village since the province of Negros Oriental is composed of 25 LGUs. The tourism officer said Governor Macias envisioned the Sidlakang Negros Village to be an all-year-round site for festivals and future events of the province, which is why permanent structures are being constructed there. Due to lack of time however in the preparation of the Buglas Festival considering it was only recently that the postponement of the activities was confirmed, Abellana admitted that only five booths will be finished in December. She said in the meantime the rest of the participating LGUs will have to build temporary structures for their booths. --------- What do u think about this?.. Bacolod has been having their Masskara Festival during Octobers, so with the change of date, it would now mean that tourists will not be anymore divided in going to either Bcd or here.. We will now have all the tourist bulk if it will be moved to December. However, December is usually not the time for people to go to another place for a festival since it is most usually spent in going back home to each other's hometowns.. Cguro mingaw jud if December!!!!!:ohno: :ohno: The idea of having permanent structures will definitely loose the surprise element, which the Buglasan at the Capitol has. I am totally against this move to change the celebration date of Buglasan ( I don't even approved the change on the festival's name to Buglas Festival, sounds Americanized, keep it original and localized). Each month should have its own festivity. I agree, December should be centered on the Yuletide season, November for Dumaguete's fiesta, and October should be on Buglasan. With those dates, December 21 to January 1, people usually spent these times with their families. Majority of the visitors will be local folks, less out of provinces tourists, which will be in contrast on its purpose of luring more tourists to the province. After Arnaiz successfully spotlighted Oriental Negros on the tourism map, now it's back to square one again with this silly idea of Macias. I wonder what the tourism sector, like hotel owners had to say on this? Such a potential loss of earnings for a specific month? Some people really wants to have its own way on everything with the authority they have, what a shame. ritche September 26th, 2007, 08:46 AM I am totally against this move to change the celebration date of Buglasan ( I don't even approved the change on the festival's name to Buglas Festival, sounds Americanized, keep it original and localized). I investigated two days ago re non-existend sprinkler system at Portal West and found out that it actually has a concealed and not yet functional sprinkler system (which is quite good, and I would say more advanced) because they are still installing the water tanks at the top floor. When the additional top floor is finished, this sprinkler system should be functional. They are now fabricating the I-beams for the top floor of the Portal west. blueguy September 29th, 2007, 03:49 PM So its not a Walk-Inn type of attraction? If you count the number of vehicles around town I guess the number of SUVS would outnumber the number of regular passenger cars. He has discussed the construction of the mall, which was originally a two-storey structure, with the Robinson management. The company decided to add a floor for hotel room accommodations, like that in midtown Cebu, which resulted in the delay of the ground work, he added. Also, more hotel rooms can be expected next year, with the establishment of Robinsons Hotel at the city business park in Barangay Calindagan.
