Hi, guys. I have a client who's planning on setting up a small call center in Dumaguete. Can anyone please give me information on where I can start gathering the necessary details? Should I go to DTI or the city government? I know that Teletech has an existing deal with the government, but when does it expire? Please PM me for any relevant information. Thanks!

Activities have been planned like the yearly V-Forum on February 20, V-Dinner on February 23, V-Fair on February 25-29, V-Run on March 9, and instead of having the usual Eve Ensler's THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES, the university will now be having A MEMORY, A MONOLOGUE, A RANT, AND A PRAYER, which will be staged in March 14, 2008.

Delaying the start of operations of Robinsons might actually be good as it will surely bring a lot of changes, among them heavy traffic within the city which the city is not prepared to handle this time, among others. We're hoping it would open sooner, though. And we hope will compensate for the itching that we have on our feet and spines brough about by its late opening schedule.

Completion of Robinsons’ Dumaguete mall set in 2009 (http://www.philstar.com/index.php?Business&p=49&type=2&sec=27&aid=2008020824)
By Zinnia B. Dela Peña
Saturday, February 9, 2008

Gokongwei-owned Robinsons Land Corp. (RLC) expects to complete the development of its three-level mall in Dumaguete City by the middle of 2009.

Robinsons Dumaguete, RLC’s fourth mall in the Visayas region, will be the first and only full service shopping mall in Dumaguete.

“Robinsons Dumaguete will be the center of activity for the province. This is where locals, tourists, students and others will converge, meet and experience a whole new way of life,” said Nilo Mapa, RLC business unit general manager.

“Dumaguete is ready for this change. The residents are well educated and well-heeled plus local economy is booming with a lot of activity coming from tourism, and call centers,” Mapa added.

The project will also include a hotel which will have over 80 rooms and a 3,000 square meter trade exhibit hall.

“With first class facilities and a modern trade hall, Robinsons Dumaguete Mall is expected to be a major component of the Dumaguete central business district,” Mapa said.

RLC is currently operating three shopping malls in key cities in Visayas namely, Robinsons Place Bacolod, Robinsons Place Iloilo and Robinsons Place Cebu.

Another shopping mall, Robinsons Tacloban, is also expected to be operational soon. The two-level shopping mall with a gross floor area of 30,000 square meters will rise in a four-hectare property along the national highway in Tacloban City, Leyte, the largest province in Eastern Visayas.

RLC presently has 20 shopping malls, 23 residential condominiums, five office buildings, 27 housing and land developments and three hotels.

RLC is the real estate arm of JG Summit Holdings Inc., one of the country’s largest conglomerates with diverse interest in branded consumers foods, agro-industrial and commodity food products, textile, telecommunications, petrochemicals, air transportation and financial services.

Robinsons Dumaguete to start operations mid-2009 (http://www.bworld.com.ph/BW020908/content.php?id=042)

Gokongwei-led Robinsons Land Corp. will complete the construction of Dumaguete’s first shopping mall towards the middle of next year, Robinsons Malls general manager Nilo Mapa said in a disclosure.

Robinsons Dumaguete Mall will be the listed company’s fourth mall in the Visayas region, following the three shopping malls in Bacolod, Iloilo and Cebu. Another mall will open in Tacloban.

"Robinsons Dumaguete will be the center of activity for the province. This is where the locals, tourists, students and other wills converge, meet and experience a whole new way of life. Dumaguete is ready for this change. The residents are well educated and well-heeled plus local economy is booming with a lot of activity coming from tourism, & call centers," Mr. Mapa said.

Located along the Dumaguete South Road, a major junction in the newly-developed Dumaguete Central Business District, Robinsons Mall will be the "first and only full service shopping mall in the entire province catering not only the locals but also other residents from the nearby cities and towns."

The modern mall structure will be clean and spacious, and fully equipped toilets and other conveniences.

Anchor tenants include the Robinsons Department Store, Robinsons Supermarket, Handyman Do It Center, Robinsons Appliances and Toys ’R’ Us.

"Robinsons Movieworld, located at the second level, will be operating three cinemas," Mr. Mapa said.

A kid’s section, health and beauty outlets, service and IT zones, a drug store, quick serve restaurants and a book store are also expected to operate in the mall.

Supporting Robinsons Dumaguete's tenant mix are popular retail operators, fast food chains as well as local entrepreneurs.

"An al fresco area has been integrated into the mall layout with the city’s landscape providing a conducive backdrop. Shoppers will have something extra to enjoy and experience while dining here," Mr. Mapa said.

Aside from the mall, the development will also include a hotel and a trade hall. The hotel will have over 80 rooms with a coffee shop, while the trade exhibit hall will be approximately 3,000 square meters.

Region 7 PNP lauds Neg. Or. police for lowest crime volume (http://www.positivenewsmedia.net/am2/publish/Inspirational_25/Region_7_PNP_lauds_Neg_Or_police_for_lowest_crime_volume.shtml)

DUMAGUETE CITY, Feb. 10 (PNA)-– The Philippine National Police (PNP) hierarchy in Region 7, headed by Chief Supt. Ronald Roderos on Friday lauded the PNP in Negros Oriental for besting other commands in Region 7 by producing the best city and municipal police stations in 2007.

In a message read by his deputy regional PNP director, C/Supt. Federico Terte, the PRO-7 director cited the sterling leadership of provincial commander,Sr. Supt. Melvin Ramon Buenafe in reducing the crime volume of the province this year.

Records show that from 796 incidents recorded in 2006, the number dropped to 691 in 2007, or 13.2 percent, thus making it the biggest reduction in crime volume in Central Visayas so far in the last 10 years, Terte said.

This indicates that each member of the police organization has effectively performed his duties and functions as protector of the people.

In 2007, the Valencia police station was adjudged as best police station throughout the country, the Dumaguete police station as best city police station in Region 7 and the Pamplona police station as best peace unit in the region.

These are considered unprecedented accomplishments, Roderos said in his statement.

Because of this, the Negros Oriental provincial police office was also adjudged as best in the region.

Negros Oriental also ranked first in intelligence performance in Central Visayas.

Terte led PRO-7 officials during the 17th PNP Day celebration held at Camp Fernandez in Agan-an, Sibulan, and attended by police and military officials, local officials and representatives from various sectors in the community, including the tri-media.

In the same activity, the Negros Oriental PNP Provincial Office handed out certificates of recognition to various groups and individuals for their continuous support to the command which helped in their exemplary accomplishments.(PNA)

Dumaguete - Philippines Best Kept Secret (http://liveinthephilippines.com/guestblog/2008/01/15/dumaguete-philippines-best-kept-secret/)

Dumaguete is not to big and not to small, it’s just about right. Just ask the 4,000 or so foreigners who call Dumaguete home. After the Robinson Mall is built in about one year’s time, it will be almost perfect. Most of the voids we presently have such as good coffee establishments, a real heath club/gym, more varied restaurants and a more sophisticated supermarket and department store will be filled and trips to Cebu for shopping will be greatly diminished. The understanding is Starbucks, Bo’s Coffee, Gold’s Gym, Robinson’s Supermarket and many more restaurants will be coming along with more specialty shops. There is an Airport located 10 minutes from downtown with two daily flight coming from and going to Manila and you can get to and from Cebu in a few hours time by Bus, Car or Ferry.

Geography – Dumaguete is a lovely seaside town a stones throw away from: Cebu, Bohol and Siquijor and on a clear day you can even see Mindanao. Rizal is the seaside boulevard where many restaurants and hotels are located and where many foreigners tend to congregate. There is also a beautiful walkway right by the water on Rizal and on any given morning or evening hundreds of more people come to walk, exercise, hangout and enjoy the beautiful view of the sea and other islands. The weather is probably not different than any other place in the country with rain and sunshine more or less depending on season.

Foreign Population – about 4,000, mostly German, Swiss, American, British, Canadian and Australian. Mostly retired or semi-retired.

Housing Rentals – When you speak of renting in Dumaguete you can also bring into the picture the towns of Valencia, Bacong, and Dauin which are no more than 15 – 20 minutes away from the city proper. Dauin and Bacong are on the sea and Valencia is an elevated town about 700 – 1700 feet above sea level and views to match. Thus you can have the best of all worlds as to where to live. Rentals range from P4000 to P50,000 monthly depending on size and location. This is perhaps the most inflated cost of living in a place with so many foreigners. The typical house suitable for a westernized foreigner with family will run closer to P15,000 if not P20,000 monthly.

Housing Purchase – There are many houses for sale now due to a depreciated dollar. You can find beautiful seaside houses with good lots sizes from about P5 million to P15 million. Otherwise houses on the market range from about P2 million to P18 million. Many have pools and western standards of construction.

Property –This also tends to be higher than other places. Beachfront P800 to P3,000 per sqm. Valencia about P250 – P1500 sqm.

Housing Construction – There is one awesome builder here who builds for many of the foreigners at about P20,000 per sqm for a high quality turn-key house. Just put in your appliances. There are other good builders here as well.

Roads – The national highway which runs north and south of the city is a very good road. Unfortunately, many of the roads in the city limits leave much to be desired and some in particular are so pot hole ridden they can present a danger to motorists.

Traffic – hundreds of tricycles and motor scooters call Dumaguete home and they tend to get in the way of cars and trucks. Nevertheless, it is fun to navigate around them and no doubt Dumaguete is a great place to hone your driving skills. There are no lights as the town is really too small for them.

Eating & Food – There are many restaurants of different food types here and food prices are affordable. As for specialty grocery food items, you will find some imported stuff in Lee Plaza the current and only real supermarket now in town (Robinsons’s will change that thankfully) and at Why Not. Why Not located on Rizal. has European style breads and meats available at their restaurant Delicatessen.

Entertainment – Why Not is both a restaurant and at night has a disco in the back. It is a very popular place for both locals and foreigners. There are also other places for dancing and listening to music

Schools, Hospitals and Places of Worship– 5 Colleges and Universities I think and just as many Hospitals. No doubt a great place to educate your kids or seek good medical attention. Also many quality schools for younger students. Hundreds of Churches abound.

Sports & Hobbies – There are two 9 hole golf courses. One is in town and the other 15 minutes away. Then there is Pamplona a true 18 hole course about 40 minutes out of town. A tennis club and a gym are located is in town. A Texas Hold’em game most nights in town, Billard halls and cock fighting arenas of course. Some of the best scuba diving in the country is located in Dauin and Apo Island. There are many Internet cafes that cater to gamers and plenty of DVD movie stores.

Hang outs – There are probably five main hangouts and they all revolve around drinking and eating – Why Not, Annabelle’s, Happy Fred’s, Coco Amigos and McDonalds. All are located on Rizal except McDonalds. They all have their own loyal clientele and if you want to meet foreigners these are the places to go. By the way, foreigners are very friendly and helpful here. For the most part the English speaking countries hang out together while the German and Swiss do the same amongst themselves.

Social Life – Dumaguete is both a great town to be single as well as involved in a relationship. Many of the foreigners here including myself are in relationships.

Conclusion - All in all I would have to say Dumaguete is the best of all worlds. I honestly think any foreigner would be happy living here. Dumaguete is laid back, friendly, pretty, and very safe place to live.

Does anyone know about how many tourists visit Dumaguete each year?

In 2005 it was 172,061. At 7-10% growth per year, maybe the tourist arrivals last year was about + or - 200,000.

Thanks for the info.

Are these "real" tourists? I mean, people who go to dumaguete to hit the beaches, diving, etc., or do these figures include all the people who arrive in Dumaguete via airplanes/ferries, regardless of their intentions (could be travelling merchants, people passing through, etc.)?

If they are pure vacationers/tourists, the number looks very healthy.

p.s. I send that person an email, but walang reply. I guess they are super busy with work. :(

Am not sure if these are sorted or the ones passing through the hotels, airports or pier. But if yoiu see around town you can see that there is a healthy number of foreigners visiting the city everyday.

I'll try to find out more about these numbers.

IBP NegOr to host regional convention
By Victor L. Camion

THE Integrated Bar of the Philippines in Negros Oriental is set to hold a regional convention in Dumaguete City next month.

Lawyer Raymund J.A. Mercado, incumbent IBP Governor for Western Visayas Region, told Sun.Star that the convention will be attended by at least 400 lawyer - delegates from Romblon, Guimaras, Antique, Capiz, Kalibo, Iloilo, Bacolod, Dumaguete and Siquijor.

He also said the mandatory continuing legal education (MCLE) will be held after the convention.

Under the theme "Raising the bar of the BAR: A Call to Excellence in the Practice of the Legal Profession", Mercado said Dumaguete City is the perfect venue for the convention.

Mercado, an active practicing lawyer from Dumaguete City, personally initiated the convention with IBP Negros Oriental Chapter headed by lawyer Samsodin Tahir, scheduled on March 6, 7 and 8, 2008 at the Negros Oriental Convention Center in Dumaguete City.

"Among the topics relevant to the times that will be discussed during the MCLE will be the Writ of Amparo, Updates in Legal Ethics, Enhancing Negotiating Skills for Lawyers and the Media & Lawyers," Mercado said.

Oral argument before the Court Of Appeals (CA), updates in criminal law, relevant special laws on land registration law, energy, environment and the law will also be discussed.

The keynote speaker is Senator Kiko Pangilinan with Senator Mar Roxas and Senator Dick Gordon.

Mayor Agustin Perdices of Dumaguete, Representative George Arnaiz (2nd district, Negros Oriental), and Governor Emilio Macias II are also expected to come.

A Starbucks but with cheaper prices (can it be?:)). Maybe Figaro na lang.

Greeneries and entertainment centers, Gonuts Donuts, more hang out places, a real nice supermarket, an artist gallery and more spaces for arts (they say arts is now a driver of growth in the global economy), schools for arts and crafts (Informatics or a graphic design school), more BPO companies.

if ur going with kyle's suggestion, habagatcentral, i say u go out and check EJ Blanco Drive / Escano Drive if u dont want too much foreign crowd, which u will surely encounter if u go with Rizal Boulevard's line of bars and clubs. Hayahay, Club El Camino, Barefoot Bistro, Lab-as, Le Chalet, all line up EJ Blanco Drive. U can also find shops there such as Havaianas, Island Life, Islands Souvineers, and other local pasalubong shops / producers if u plan to bring some pasalubong to ur peeps.. Its Dumaguete's party central where the student population hang out and let go of some school stress. Its good if u go there on a Wednesday, Friday, or Saturday night if u want Dumaguete's kind of night life. Expect to find long lines of cars parked along the EJ Blanco's boulevard and along with that, booze all over the place.. hehehe. U can also check out Gimmick or Payag sa Likod if u want tropical ambiance. But if ur not the nocturnal type of guy, and would rather go for more "wholesome" activities, sampling out some of the international restaurants or just going along with the gentle breeze of the boulevard and going for a short tambay in the infamous tempura alley with SU Hall in the background, and maybe just walk around the halls of Silliman, St Pauls, NORSU, and FU, then I am sure u will have a worthwhile stay.

First of all let us know what is your definition of a nightlife...

nicko
February 17th, 2008, 02:27 PM
if he equates nightlife to shopping, then dumaguete may not be for him. true, most department stores close by 6, 7 or 8 but when we talk about having fun other than shopping, then dumaguete may not be so far from other key cities.. There are lots of bars / clubs that open until the wee hours. and btw, dumaguete nightlife is not just about party and booze.. You can rent a motorbike and drive around the city just for 100pesos and u can have it for as long as 12 hours.

Most fastfood outlets here are open 24 hours (Jollibee-Perdices, Jollibee-North Road, Chowking, Dunkin Donuts, Qyosko, Hoy Lugaw, etc..) and others are open until 12midnight (McDonald's) and 2am (Shakey's) depending on the customer volume. All are wifi hotspots.. Generally, the city is wifi connected.. So if u just know how to have fun and make the best use of the time, then its not going to be very bad here in Dumaguete even though that its just a small city with a population of barely 200,000..:)

johnnyS
February 17th, 2008, 04:15 PM
When you say wifi hotspot, do you mean its free to people?
Here in Manila, stores (like starbucks) are beginning to charge people by the hour, at 100pesos per hour!

I guess they don't want people to hang around for free internet for 10 hours drinking one small regular coffee.

Ang Boulevard is the only girlie bar I know of in dumaguete, the other one near qyosko having burned down in november of last year.

The boarding house fronting panda ice cream house reportedly has some students who sidelines as angelitas de la noche.

motor bike rental is 100/6hours, 20/hour after the 6th hour. for long term (3days) you can haggle the price down to 250/day and you can have the bike for 24hrs/day.

It will be the first and only full service shopping mall in the entire province catering not only the locals but also other residents from the nearby cities and towns. “Robinsons Dumaguete will be the center of activity for the province. Roxas Holdings gets P2-B loan for expansion
By Zinnia B. Dela Peña
Monday, February 18, 2008
http://www.philstar.com/index.php?Business&p=49&type=2&sec=27&aid=2008021717

Sugar conglomerate Roxas Holdings Inc. (RHI) has obtained a new loan facility from Bank of the Philippine Islands and Rizal Commercial Banking Corp. amounting to P2 billion.

The new facility will complete the P5.8-billion capital requirement for its massive expansion program and diversification into the ethanol business.

Last week, RHI and its subsidiaries Central Azucarera Don Pedro Inc. and Central Azucarera dela Carlota, Inc. secured a P4.7-billion loan from Banco De Oro.

The total loan facilities from BDO, BPI and RCBC amount to P6.7 billion, which is more than enough to cover the acquisition of two sugar mills abroad, the establishment of an ethanol plant and repayment of debt.

“The funds we need would only amount to about P5.1 billion. We are grateful for the respective contingencies granted by the three institutions. This is clearly a testimony to their confidence in our company,” said RHI senior vice-president for finance and treasurer Asuncion Aguilar.

The move is in preparation for the entry of low-priced imported sugar that will enter the country in 2010 under the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Nations) Free Trade Agreement.

The acquisition of new mills is expected to bring down the group’s operational costs, particularly on fuel, and will serve as a takeoff point for the group’s entry into the energy sector.

The company is planning to put up an ethanol plant in Negros Occidental to take advantage of the opportunities brought about by the passage of the Biofuels Act of 2006. The law mandates the use of locally sourced biofuels.

Slated for completion this year, the ethanol plant will have an estimated capacity of 100,000 liters a day or 30 million liters yearly.

“There is no stopping us from rolling out our strategic initiatives now that we have obtained the necessary funds. We envision this expansion program to place us in a competitive advantage and in the process, maximize value for our shareholders,” RHI chairman and chief executive officer Pedro Roxas said.

RHI is also planning to expand and build its market share by strengthening its traditional market and capturing more industrial customers to expand its clientele.

The Roxas Holdings group, through CADP, remains the largest producer of raw sugar in the country and the second largest refiner in the country, contributing 19 percent and 20 percent of annual production, respectively.

Antulang Beach Resort and Spa, Atlantis Resort and Spa, and Bahura Resort and Spa were among the 10 Philippines Resorts who were led in Paris by Tourism Sec. Joseph Ace Durano.

Anabelle Lee-Adriano, Antulang beach Resort proprietor / manager, noted that although it was the country's first time to join the exposition, the Philippines took centerstage when it was awarded Destination of Choice for 2008. "The Philippines had one of the best booths there," she said.

Dumaguete’s very own Entheos IT Inc. Animation Studios bagged the Professional 2D and 3D Animation Award in the recently-concluded 6th Animazing Shorts of the E-Services organized by the Center for International Trade Exposition and Mission, and the Animation Council of the Philippines.

The winning entry, Bakunawa, is a two-minute animated short adaptation of the Visayan folklore which depicts a dragon-like creature responsible for the lunar eclipse.

The animation project was produced by Entheos IT proprietor Architect Dean Sinco and directed by Kemuel Lazalita.

MANILA, Philippines -- An 18-year-old Filipino student showed them how.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said Hannah-Lyn Creencia, a mass communications junior at Silliman University, took part in last week’s high-level discussion on the challenges of global sustainable development held at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) headquarters in Paris, France.

She joined some of the world’s top policymakers, business leaders and the international geoscientific community at the meet.

Creencia had won an international essay-writing contest in connection with Unesco’s launch of “International Year of Planet Earth.” She began the panel discussion on the theme “Earth Resources: Threat or Treat?” by reading an excerpt from her essay on the continuing deterioration of the planet’s water resources.

Silliman Hall

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x287/GearX_2007/another/another%202/romant1.jpg

“Silliman Hall by the sea is arguably the most romantic, iconic landmark of Dumaguete City. One of the few remaining architectural masterpieces in the country, it is flanked by local palms and shaded by giant acacia trees. Its American mansion-inspired facade has for 105 years cemented the city's status not only as an educational Mecca, but also as a melting pot of various cultures from around the world. To me, Silliman Hall stands as an ode to the romantic way cultures mingle in this quaint little city.”

I heard that there has been efforts made by SUMCFI to purchase a MRI machine to upgrade their diagnostic services. NOPH, on the other hand, will surely have one later this year. It will be one of the very few government hospitals to have a MRI machine aside from the CT scans it has.. Impressive healthcare equipment upgrade by our own governor who is also a surgeon by profession!

I do wear Mossimo apparels given by friends in the States and not bought in the local Mossimo outlet (nowadays I can't afford these kind of apparels) and I go to the gym to tone my muscles but I am not in this picture.:)

Yeah, my friend who is the son of the former ambassador to China wishes that Robinsons will also have a Guess outlet.

I was with several artist-friends from Manila who are half Spanish (one of them used to teach Special Education in De La Salle) over the weekend and they decided to settle here in Dumaguete for good. One of them purchased a lot in Valencia for her house.

it does look great.. i heard that the touchscreen computers that are in the lobby will be for public use as a map for the mall and for something that will inform people on shop locations and what they are.. very techie... i hope it will have an internet connection..

plus factor if the elevator will be operational.. and i guess it will be if the top floor gets done... still lots of boutiques, food chains, etc.. to open up..

Nice idea. But i hope we would be able to maintain it well since even this thread is barely surviving with only about 3-4 regular forumers. But it really does not matter to me at all. Even if our pace is turtle-ish, our forum views exceed even of those other city threads with fast and the furious-ish paced postings.. I think thats most important. More people viewing us through this thread rather than rush posting.. Nonetheless, i'll do my best to post in our new thread, and of course with this one.. i wont be very busy after next week then.. :)

MOUNTAIN CLIMBING

For a mountain is not just a mass of rock and earth rising above the plain.
A mountain is a landmark which people have seen for centuries. Such a landmark
must have colored their thoughts and excited their imagination. It is often
said that people climb a mountain because "it is there". it is a witty remark,
but it is also profoundly true. I think the real reason why people climb mountains
because they feel the need to do so. They feel that they are not real master of the
land until they haved scaled its heights.

Mount Kanlaon

Explore an active volcano, Mt. Kanlaon on Negros Island. This active volcano,
at almost 2600 meters high, is one of the 5 highest mountains in the Philippines.
It's new crater is a breathtaking 400 m deep and around 100 m wide.

http://www.dumagueteoutdoors.com/mountain_climbing/img/kanlaon.jpg

The trail to the top is steep and we'll climb through different vegetation zones from rich agriculture land to thick rain forest until reaching the lunar-like landscape surrounding the crater .Taking three days to explore this mountain, we'll spend one night at a pension house and the next night at our camp on the crater saddle in tnts. From there view the whole Visaya
region with the clouds just a stone's throw away. (source www.active-philippines.com)

Mount Talinis

Negros Oriental’s prominent peaks, the Cuernos de Negros or Horns of Negror
rise 5,095 feet above sea level and are situated 9 km.
Mt. Talinis is located in Negros Oriental, about 1 hour away from
downtown Dumaguete City. Nature lovers can enjoy the unspoiled scenery,
Nailig and Yagunyum lakes, and the lush vegetation.

Climbing covers a range of recreational, adventurous or sporting activities
involving using one's hands and feet to move up the surface of a steep object.

Evolving from the pursuit of mountaineering, rock climbing is the scaling of steep rocky surfaces, usually using ropes and other
climbing equipment for protection.

APO ISLAND ROCK CLIMBING

http://www.dumagueteoutdoors.com/rock_climbing/img/apo.jpg

This tiny island off the coast of Dumaguete is almost completely
ringed with 20m cliffs of stable limestone, offering fascinating
climbing in a stunning setting. The island is surrounded by crystal
water and extensive reefs, ideal for post-climb diving expeditions.

Truly fearless (or perhaps foolhardy) climbers can cap off their
ascent with a 12m dive into the ocean below. There are five established routes,
ranging from 5.6 to 5.10, and the potential is there for many others. The island is a 30-minute boat ride from shore, and it is worth seeking the help of local climbers – contact the Dumaguete-based Cuernos de Negros Mountaineering Club, who can also arrange mountain
treks into the interior of southern Negros.

Every Wednesday of the week, people would flock to this bay side bar to hear their famous reggae band. Its proximity to the sea lends this place an idyllic atmosphere of the beach during a hot tropical summer night. Perhaps its most unique attractions are the native tree houses facing the ocean. With a 15-seat capacity and its own bar, each tree house is perfect for a small group of friends. On clear nights, one can see the distant lights of the Cebu Island or the blinking gas lanterns of local fishermen’s boats. You should sample Hayahay’s specialty, baked or grilled oysters fresh from their aquarium.

Pinocchio Is Back On Stage In March
The Negros Chronicle

http://www.kcrecords.com/cinderidol/images/LPRT-Pinocchio.jpg

After the very successful showing back in March 2006, performing in front of audiences of hundreds of delighted children and adults, the much requested and long awaited repeat performance is finally here!

With Sidlakang Negros Foundation, Inc. as producer, this Emmy Award winning musical “PINOCCHIO” will be performed on March 7 & 8, at the Luce Auditorium.

The producers aspire to raise the benchmark of quality and excellence in the field of stage entertainment n our city. They aim to make productions that are par with international standards. This means they will be making authentic sets and costumes as well as needing good quality lights and sound systems.

This entails considerable expense and we hope that you could join us again in achieving this task by being a major sponsor of this highly anticipated event, said Joanie Dy-Sycip, MD, Director and Rene M. Oliva Jr., Director.

Culture and tradition keep a people alive. These two pillars of a race even serve their purpose by making people realize that these should be entrenched in their being for them to be useful, productive mortals on this earth.

Such was the underlying theme of the recently staged musical play, “Fiddler on the Roof” which took Dumaguete by storm again even if it was on its fourth time to be mounted at the Luce Auditorium of Silliman University .

Not only did the musical touch base on culture and tradition, but more so on the immortal themes of love over family and happiness over norms dictated by society. But, isn't love also part of our culture and tradition? In fact, if we go by the sometimes mushy greetings (read: commercialized) in department stores today, what with the onset of another tradition – the celebration of Valentine's Day the world over – love is, indeed, one of the best kept traditions any people can ever imagine to experience. Who was it who said that, “It is better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all?”

http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/dailypix/2002/Nov/15/tgif15_b.jpg

“Fiddler on the Roof,” from the book by Joseph Stein based on Sholom Aleichem's Stories, with music by Jerry Beck and lyrics by Sheldon Hornick, is a touchingly funny musical, which universalizes the experiences of one family, one people who face a changing world. The story is set in Anatevka, a liitle village somewhere in the far reaches of Russia , sometime around 1905, just before the Revolutionary Period.

Looking around the village one day, Tevye, the milkman, sees how much his life is ruled and regulated by the Jewish tradition of his people. Necessary adjuncts to this tradition are the Rabbi, Yente the Matchmaker, the papas, the mamas, the sons, and the daughters, who each have a role to play set by tradition. Even the way they eat, dress, and pray is oh, so traditional.

However, change is in the air and Tevye goes home to find that he has to choose between upholding tradition by making his daughters marry men of his choosing or by letting them marry for love. Although he is conservative, Tevye is also compassionate and would rather see his daughters happy than secure in material possessions. This leads him to literally dream up ridiculous situations in order to convince his wife, Golde, that their daughters' love matches are made in heaven.

In order to awaken the village people to the significance of the disturbances around the village and to the events of the outside world, Perchik, a student from the university, comes to Anatevka. He is able to introduce a few changes in the village such as, dancing with a girl and holding her in public. These changes are accepted by the villagers after a little struggle; as for the rest of the battle, Perchik's foe stands strong – tradition.

http://www.fresnobeehive.com/archives/upload/2007/05/fiddler.jpg

"Fiddler on the Roof” is, by itself, a tradition in Dumaguete. Historically, it was first performed at the Imperial Theatre, New York, on September 22, 1964; produced by Harold Prince with direction and choreography by Jerome Robbins, set by Boris Aronson, costumes by Patricia Zipprodt, and with Zero Mostel as Tevye, Maria Kamilova as Gole, and Beatrice Arthur as Yente.

In Dumaguete, the play was first performed at the Luce Auditorium as a commencement production in 1975. Twenty years later, it was again presented to commemorate the inauguration of the Luce Auditorium. Thus, it had a repeat performance during the 1995 Founders Day. It was again staged during the centennial celebration of Silliman University in 2001 with a total of five performances in the month of August.

“Fiddler on the Roof” has always drawn community interest because it offers the opportunity for talents from various age groups to experience acting as well as enjoy the camaraderie in a large cast.

There are also milestones in this year's production. For example, baritone Dominador de los Santos has reprised the role of Tevye three times already and Evelyn Aldecoa, who teaches speech and theater arts at Silliman University and now has founded Prism Amateur Community Theatre, played the role of Golde in 1975 when she was yet a student, and directed the 1995, the centennial production, and this year's restaging. Her challenge is double this year because not only did she direct the play, she also did justice to the role of Yente, the matchmaker.

http://www.alabramsphotography.com/ghosts.jpg

As she noted, no cast exhibits the same degree of energy or the amount of talent. “After 18 weeks of rehearsals, singing, and dancing practices, of making priorities and sacrifices, of sweating it out in the Luce ‘sauna' as is the case when the lights are on, but the airconditioning system is off; of cramming for exams and projects in the dim backstage lights; we have come to see the fruits of our labor. Then, we realize it wasn't all that bad because we also had 18 weeks of fun and laughter, friendships, and the privilege of being a part of this once-in-a-lifetime special presentation,” Aldecoa recalls.

The play was also in memoriam of some cast members who have passed on, like Nelly Romano Aldecoa, Evelyn's mother, who was Grandma Tzeitel in 1975; Ephraim Bejar, former speech and theatre arts professor of Silliman University, who was the Constable in 1975; Ma. Lorelei Ybañez, who was one of the villagers in 1975, with Francis Pring; and Christopher Abella, who played the Constable in 2001, and whose own young son, Zachary, played one of the village sons this year.

Indeed, love and tradition are here to stay, despite economic upheavals, technological breakthroughs, and even climate change.

Just like the people of Anatevka, we also feel the same way about love, relationships, and everything traditional in these modern times. Like the love matches of Tevye's daughters, though radical, are not any indication of bigger changes to come. They are confident in the security of their tradition which was, and is, and always will be.

^^

After the recent musical play "THE FIDDLER ON THE ROOF," which wowed audiences from all over the country last month, the most expensive local production ever made, "PINOCCHIO," which premiered last 2006 @ the Luce will once again hail the stage for the second time due to public demand! As we recall, there were a lot of people who were not able to see the show even with the two days straight of matinee and gala show.

It was reported that there were even tickets sold as far as Manila, Cebu, and Davao. This year, let us again welcome Pinocchio. Tickets are also sold at Lee Super Plaza Lobby aside from SU. As of yesterday, tickets were almost sold out. price range: P100 - P500. Lets all grab one before it gets sold out!

There are no doubt infinitely more things to do in this Eastern Visayas hotspot. But consider this a starter kit, good for a typical three-day, two-night stay. Fear not, grasshopper, this is only the beginning…

Best months to go are summer and October to around January, the rest of the year, if not wet, can have highly fickle weather.

http://www.femalenetwork.com/fnblog/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/emma-duma1.jpghttp://

1. You must hang out at a café along the Boulevard, where, at any part of the famed strip, your view will be this panorama of blue on blue.

Essentially, Dumaguete’s Rizal Boulevard is very much like our own Roxas Boulevard. Only, it’s a two-lane thoroughfare, so you’re very close to the water even from across the street. It can get pretty smoky during rush hour, but bay-walking here, I think, still offers way cleaner air than in its Manila counterpart.

Every Friday and Saturday night, the bars and other vendors along the boulevard line the sidewalk with chairs, tables, grills, and chillers of cold beer for an impromptu street party. I recommend the following cheap street fare: tempura on a stick; barbecued chorizo (orange, about the same size as a Vienna sausage, usually two pieces on a stick) with rice banana-leaf-wrapped in the shape of a pyramid (no need for a plate or spork, just take a bite off the chorizo, another off the compact rice pyramid, and mix-and-match in your mouth!); and creamy ivory-colored penoy paired with a bag of Mr. Chips. Sure there’s tempura, chorizo, and all stages of duck fetus here, too, but…can you just trust me on this one?

3. You must drink in Hayahay. (Tell trike driver, “Hayahay, sa lo-ok, tabi ng Lab-as.”) Hayahay means “presko” in Visayan. And it literally is a sea breeze channel. The only downer is, it’s so soothing you get sleepy way before you get a happy-joy-glee buzz!

4. When in Hayahay, order the calamares. The most tender I’ve tasted in recent dining history. Plus, an order is a measly 70 bucks.

http://www.femalenetwork.com/fnblog/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/emma-duma5.jpg

5. You must eat inihaw na manok and liempo at Senior Pedro. (Tell trike driver, “Sa Senior Pedro, malapit sa Equitable Bank.”) Make no mistake, apart from toyo, suka, and sili, there won’t be gravy, Mang Tomas, soup, or any kind of side dish. It’s all about inihaw na manok, liempo, rice, and a soda. Karne kung karne! But the meat of both the chicken and pork is fantastically flavored, moist, and perfectly tender that the act of using any condiments is tantamount to painting some red acrylic over the Mona Lisa’s mouth “para magkakulay siya.” A complete affront to what is already perfect in its simplicity. I’ve never tasted anything as pure, primal, and cheap in Manila.

When I went in around 5 p.m., the crowd was already like this and stayed like this all the way till past dinner time. People don’t opt to transfer to another joint if it’s packed, they’ll order off the rotisserie and take it to-go instead. My meat and rice bonanza, for four people, cost around 300 bucks (with soda ha!)

And yes, I know there’s a Senior Pedro here, but you don’t decline a thin-crust pepperoni pizza in Italy just because Shakey’s delivers, do you?

http://www.femalenetwork.com/fnblog/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/emma-duma6.jpg

6. You must have merienda at Anna Maria. (Tell trike driver, “Anna Maria, Silliman Avenue, tabi ng Chantilly.” At Anna Maria, the individual prices of a creamy milk shake, a huge-ass cheesedog sandwich, and a lot of other yummy grub average at 60 bucks.

And since I did mention Chantilly, I might as well also urge you to have merienda there the next day. It’s a bakery that also serves sandwiches. No-frills, pretension-free slipper bread (think a flat-footed size 6), stuffed with generous servings of ham, cheese, mayo, lettuce or whatever you want it stuffed with, for around 50 bucks.

http://www.femalenetwork.com/fnblog/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/emma-duma7.jpg

http://www.femalenetwork.com/fnblog/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/emma-duma8.jpg

7. Starbucks shmarbucks. A cafe mocha smoothie, cheeseburger with egg, and a cappuccino sets you back 130 bucks.
Rumor has it that a Starbucks shall soon rise within the Silliman University campus. I’m now open for donations of scrap wood plywood…gotta start making my picket signs. “Makibaka! Ibagsak ang caramel-macchiato-venti-with-skim-milk!”

http://www.femalenetwork.com/fnblog/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/emma-duma10.jpg

8. You have to grab dinner at Persian Palate. (Tell trike driver, “Persian Palate.”) Do not be deceived, that’s not Java Rice. That’s a kebab combo of Chili Rice with Coconut Milk…a dish that Bicolanos will wish they’d come up with first.

http://www.femalenetwork.com/fnblog/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/emma-duma11.jpg

http://www.femalenetwork.com/fnblog/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/emma-duma12.jpghttp://

http://www.femalenetwork.com/fnblog/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/emma-duma13.jpg

9. Climb one floor up from Persian Palate and live la vida illustrado at the charming San Antonio Café, set in an old-style Spanish manor, where, from a table beside huge capiz-shell bay windows, you can sip dark hot traditional tsokolate e while watching the city below slowly pack its wares as the sun makes a slow and graceful exit into the horizon.

http://www.femalenetwork.com/fnblog/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/emma-duma14.jpg

10. Then slum it talipapa-style the next day. Breakfast at the market: two cups honest-to-goodness tablea hot coco (none of that just-add-hot-water swill) and freshly made puto for 30 bucks!

http://www.femalenetwork.com/fnblog/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/emma-duma15.jpg

11. Enjoy a drink by the sea. And I don’t mean at a bar with stilts in the water; I mean sand between your toes, fresh fish from a nearby fishing village on a grill, slivers of moonshine cast off on the water, and, okay fine, your iPod hooked to a portable speaker. Then as you haul your drunken ass out by sunup, have a friend capture the moment. Hangovers have never been this picturesque.

http://www.femalenetwork.com/fnblog/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/emma-duma16.jpg

12. Rent a ride―a scooter, a motorcycle, or a roofless jeep―if you want to explore past the city limits. There are some rentals along the Boulevard, but I suggest looking for options downtown. Rentals on the Boulevard tend to have higher rates. Ask your hotel receptionist which areas you can find rentable rides.

The best thing about Dumaguete is that it’s a good launch point for other holiday hot spots. Drive out to a cornucopia of beaches―from the pebbly to the talcum-powdery to the pewter-sanded―you’ll run into one any which way of the compass. You can close your eyes, hold your finger out, spin, randomly stop, and head out in the direction at which you happen to be pointing― you will find a beach in under an hour.

Or take a road trip to Bais for a meet-and-greet with whales (or to rubberneck some good-looking sugar-plantation mestiza and mestizo herederos―this you’ll have to do in summer, though, as almost all of them are in Manila during school season).

Ferry out to Cebu, or to snorkeling and diving sites in the marine paradise that is Apo Island, and be back at your hotel by dinnertime.

If you opt to stay in the city, though, dump the rental. Dumaguete’s a wonderful place to pound the pavement and get lost in.

http://www.femalenetwork.com/fnblog/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/emma-duma17.jpg

13. TIPS YOU’LL PROBABLY FIND USELESS BUT WHICH I’M PUTTING ANYWAY:
If you are a smoker, make sure you are booked in a smoking room so you don’t have to creep out in the middle of the night to your floor’s terrace to huff and puff and take useless pictures.

There are a lot of backpacker-friendly accommodations in Dumaguete. A pipe dream of mine would be staying at La Residencia, high-end digs along the Boulevard, atop Don Atilano restaurant. It’s another old Spanish manor with rooms furnished in colonial-period luxury―dark hardwood floors, canopied beds, intricately carved darkwood dressers, sheer and billowy drapes, with capiz-shell picture windows that open out to the bay. But that’ll set me back around three grand a night. So I opt for more a modest place a few blocks down the road: Bethel Guest House (bethelguesthouse.com, tel. 035-225-2000 or 035-422-8000). It’s one of those two-star hotels where convention attendees are billeted. But it’s right along the Boulevard, too, and walking-distance to a lot of eateries, bars, cafés, and the Saturday-night street soirées. Best of all, a standard room’s less than a grand a night.

http://www.femalenetwork.com/fnblog/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/emma-duma18.jpg

14. Make sure you’ve got something planned on a weeknight if you’re traveling alone. Otherwise, your after-hours boredom will have you staying in bed morning to dinnertime, doing nothing but sleep and watch Diether Ocampo bludgeon Sir Olivier’s craft to a mushy pulp and deliver the most gag-inducing lines on the Pinoy movie cable channel.

Just when you’ve gathered your wits, taken a bath, blow-dried your hair, put on your game face, and are ready to seize the day, it is midnight and everyone you know has gone to bed because they have either work or school the next morning. All that lip gloss and nowhere to go.

For lack of anything to do, you start thinking that hyper-zoomed-in shots of your jeans are poetic, just like those instamatic-skilled idiots who buy SLR pro digicams to take black-and-white photos of beggars on the street because it’s “art.”

…a woman must never be left idle with her thoughts in a strictly-no-smoking hotel room, I tell you. Never.

Trees

I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.

A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the earth's sweet flowing breast;

A tree that may in Summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;

Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.

Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.

I was once to decide to enroll there but it was only for a summer class course. however, the requirement is that u be good in computer applications such flash, moviemaker, corel or adobe editing and the like.. but unfortunately, im bad at those.. it is also a plus if ur good in drawing, which they would ask from u a sample of ur drawing or may it be painting that is good for their standards... i say, being an animator is no joke. u have to love what u do and u have to be good at it. how i wish i can be part of the company, soon.. wishful thinking..... wew. anyway, its nice that Dumaguete has one. Pretty cool!

One of the perks of being Hari ng Negros is that you receive invitations from all corners of Negros Island to judge any kind of event imaginable. Recently, I received an invitation from the Municipality of Mabinay in Negros Oriental to be a judge in their annual Bikini Fashion Show (another term for Bikini Open).

Mabinay is located right smack in the center of Negros. It is considered a "cave town" because of all the caves they have. As of the latest count, the tourism office of Mabinay has chronicled more than 200 caves within their municipality.

I accepted the invitation as this would be an opportune time to finally flirt with the underworld.

http://bp2.blogger.com/_7pss2zRAfBE/Ryu6p3UOtpI/AAAAAAAAAns/8QZ2i1IejSc/s320/081.jpg (http://bp2.blogger.com/_7pss2zRAfBE/Ryu6p3UOtpI/AAAAAAAAAns/8QZ2i1IejSc/s1600-h/081.jpg)

I decided to arrive hours before the event so to check out some of the caves in the area. We were booked at the Tirambulo Highland Resort in Barangay Paniabonan which is very close to the event venue. The resort has 5 man-made lakes surrounded by lush vegetation and greenery.

http://bp1.blogger.com/_7pss2zRAfBE/Ryu4TnUOtmI/AAAAAAAAAnU/np3UlPPWCzY/s320/068.jpg (http://bp1.blogger.com/_7pss2zRAfBE/Ryu4TnUOtmI/AAAAAAAAAnU/np3UlPPWCzY/s1600-h/068.jpg)

As if luck was not on our side, some of the models of the bikini fashion show were also at the same resort.

The Municipality granted my request for a cave tour before the show. Left to Right (Beam, spelunking specialist, Menchie, tourism officer of Mabinay, Mayor Piktoy Baldoza, Jeffrey Dasian, caving expert, Rowena Merto, fellow judge and tourism officer of Dumaguete, Dodong and mayor's son (forgot name)

The first cave we went to explore is the Baliw Cave. Baliw in the dialect means crazy. Before entering the caves, the tourism office of Mabinay makes sure you have all the proper equipments and they also read to you the Do's and Don'ts of caving.

http://bp2.blogger.com/_7pss2zRAfBE/Ryu3l3UOtiI/AAAAAAAAAm0/rtmpBImzRU4/s320/064.jpg (http://bp2.blogger.com/_7pss2zRAfBE/Ryu3l3UOtiI/AAAAAAAAAm0/rtmpBImzRU4/s1600-h/064.jpg)

Most of the caves in Mabinay are untouched yet. There are no lights, railings or walkways. Precaution has to be used always when going around.

http://bp2.blogger.com/_7pss2zRAfBE/Ryu3l3UOtjI/AAAAAAAAAm8/JElbhTfaSRU/s320/065.jpg (http://bp2.blogger.com/_7pss2zRAfBE/Ryu3l3UOtjI/AAAAAAAAAm8/JElbhTfaSRU/s1600-h/065.jpg)

Still inside Baliw cave, Beam shows us this interesting formation. It looks like ice.

The next cave we went inside is called the Crystal Cave. This one has a lot of interesting stalactite and stalagmite formations.

http://bp3.blogger.com/_7pss2zRAfBE/Ryu4UHUOtoI/AAAAAAAAAnk/ooQxw5Jib9w/s320/070.jpg (http://bp3.blogger.com/_7pss2zRAfBE/Ryu4UHUOtoI/AAAAAAAAAnk/ooQxw5Jib9w/s1600-h/070.jpg)

Mambajo Cave was next. This cave has two entrance, one through the sunroof (Rappelling is the only way though this entrance)

http://bp0.blogger.com/_7pss2zRAfBE/Ryu4TXUOtkI/AAAAAAAAAnE/Jf7g2v-O-Us/s320/066.jpg (http://bp0.blogger.com/_7pss2zRAfBE/Ryu4TXUOtkI/AAAAAAAAAnE/Jf7g2v-O-Us/s1600-h/066.jpg)

Or through the underground river that flows inside the cave. Notice the children swimming in the underground river.

A very easy cave to explore is the Panligawan Cave....

http://bp0.blogger.com/_7pss2zRAfBE/Ryu7XXUOtrI/AAAAAAAAAn8/6M80pGO8E64/s320/072.jpg (http://bp0.blogger.com/_7pss2zRAfBE/Ryu7XXUOtrI/AAAAAAAAAn8/6M80pGO8E64/s1600-h/072.jpg)

...and the Pandalihan Cave. Overall the caving experience was fulfilling and tiring at the same time. I almost lost all my energy to be a judge that night.

Back in college, I was once a member of the Order of the Golden Palette, better known as OGPA (i don't know if that group is still active today). Though I joined them only for a year during my senior, we have done lots of exhibits. We once have a nude sketching session on top of Bethel and was exhibited at the Scheide Chapel. There were some famous campus personalities involved, the student government president and a beautiful young teacher but who later backed out. All were done in clandestine. Anyway, I wish well for the success of this company. We can never tell that the next Disney movie might be outsourced in Dumaguete. :tongue2:

BUGLASAN FIREWORKS DISPLAY

Although the current Buglasan Festival is a far cry from the previous Buglasans of the prior administration. Take a glimpse at the Fireworks Festival of 2006. Different groups from all over the country joined this annual competition just to be named as the best and the master of the pyro aerial display. The Dumaguete Team is the victor which is also the same team that won in the first fireworks competition in Iloilo this year.

http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u67/sendzki/feat_cart-1.jpg

The application for fellowship for the 47th Dumaguete National Writers Workshop (DNWW) is now open. Deadline for the submission of manuscripts is on April 5.

The workshop will be from May 5 to 23, 2008 at the Silliman University (SU) Albert Faurot End House.

Writers are invited to submit 7-10 poems, 3-5 short stories or 3-5 creative non-fiction essays, in English only, to the SU English and Literature Department (SU-ELD).

English and Literature Department Chair Prof. Andrea Soluta said that the panel will be headed by poet and SU-ELD faculty member, César Ruiz Aquino.

Soluta said that the panelists for the workshop proper will include Aquino, Tiempo, Susan Lara, Atty. Ernesto Superal Yee, Bobby Flores Villasis and Myrna Peña-Reyes Sweet.

I watched this show when ETC was still on Sky. Too bad they took away ETC and replaced it with Velvet, which is also a good Channel. But I really miss Conan O'Brien, Jay Leno, Blind date and the 5th Wheel. I hope they will put back ETC, which is "All Good.".

I toured the father of the slain Silliman Nursing student Nina Estacio around the city as he was looking for a place to rent here. He is planning to set up a business in the city and eventually settle here. They are from Dipolog but the father is working in Manila.

I myself was quite surprised while going around the subdivisions and other corners of the city seeing the number of constructions going on. I drove thru some areas two months ago and the constructions and new structures were not there yet. Indeed, it is really true that Dumaguete, according to former President of Pepsi Asia Pacific Fred Dael, is one of the fastest growing cities in the Philippines.

By the way, Mr. Estacio is spearheading the establishment of a volunteers organization against crime and corruption and he is looking for more volunteers. If you would like to join guys you can contact me.

Hi,

I'm a newcomer to SSC. I came across this site by accident, and glad I did.

This morning, my wife saw some workers surveying the road along Purok 7, Upper Batinguel. when she asked what are they doing, they told her they were surveying for the new DUmaguete by-pass road. I don't know if this is their final plan, or they are looking for the route that will cost them less when it comes to purchasing land.

I hope they make it a wide, straight road; not like the liko kaayo nga road going to the Bajumpandan slaughterhouse...

HI GARTHIN DUMAGUETE. WELCOME TO SSC DUMAGUETE!! Hope u stay regular here! We need more people like you!!.. Looking forward to see more posts from you!...

About the by-bass road, i would like to have it really wide. I'm imagining it having at least four lanes. Moreso, it would be much better if it be started asap. The downtown area is a traffic nightmare esp. during rush hours. I hate seeing those big trucks passing by the narrow streets of the city and disrupting the already really bad traffic!...

Thanks for the welcome Nicko...

I'm new to SSC but not new to Dumaguete. I've been here long enough to remember getting excited talking to Henry (or Peter) Chuang - the brother of the Golden rule store owner. He used to own the 'Shoppers Center'; a one storey building that sold all sorts of appliances, guitars with turtle back sound boxes. I got excited when he told me he was moving to the States, and Lee Plaza who used to rent a space in what is now the Ever Mall, had bought his property to put up a five storey mall.

I now feel the same excitement about Robinsons. Expecially seeing the perspective pics the SSC Dumaguete guys (and girls) have posted.

Hey, when I was new here, we almost bought 400sq/m land in Claytown. The guy sold it to someone else for P40,000 who had the money readily available, after he agreed to sell it to us for P70,000 in installments for one year. I remember tinking then, that Claytown... ...Bukid kaayo! Heeheehee. That was 1990, in those days Dumaguete was just mostly the land between Cervantes, Luke Wright, Roxas Boulevard, and Silliman Ave roads.

As you can see, from what Dumaguete was like when I first came here, I've enjoyed a lot of progress.

Garthin Dumaguete

Why doesn't the city think about burying the cables. Many countries do that (including my home country, UK). It makes the city better to look at, less hazardous, less dangerous, plus it would be easier to maintain.

Garthin Dumaguete
March 13th, 2008, 08:42 PM
I agree it would be better that the diversion road be finished before Robinson's, but I doubt it would happen. On one hand, you have Mr. Gokwenkai, who is a good businessman who doesn't like waiting around, and you have the government, which has lots of red tape to pass through, funds to raise, lands to buy and may have to expropriate if any landowners don't want to sell their lands cheap.

Huh? I don't know where to start. Okay...okay...here goes: Sorry to burst your 'enthusiastic bubble' buddy but that 'hope'/'dream' is, given the available facilities and infrastructure security in Dumaguete, not happening by a loooooong shot.

Heck, Cebu has better facilities (i.e., Bigfoots Studio's soundstages at Mactan) and better infrastructure security (i.e., better power-supply performance--as in fewer 'brownouts' and better flight connections to other parts of the Asia Pacific Region).

But even Cebu can't compete with animation powerhouses such as the Chinese, Indian, South Korean, and Japanese cities. Not to mention that California, Pixar's Animation Studio homebase, has a huge and diverse talent pool of artists from a wide array of nationalities.

Dumaguete or, even, Cebu are not yet in the 'radar' of, what the big animation studios of Hollywood would call as, animation-outsourcing hotspots.

Let's stick to facts shall we and not wishful thinking. Thanks.

If there's a will, there's a way. I have met this German guy who is from bilderfabrik (www.bilderfabrik.org) @ FU, He has worked in animation studios in NY, Tokyo and in Manila (I guess he is, to some extent, connected to Top Peg) and he was talking about putting up an animation studio or outfit here in Dumaguete. That was about four years ago.

Now, I guess the cultivation of a culture for animation has started to bear fruit, with our winning the the Animation contest at the national IT convention at the SMX @ Mall of Asia.

If we continue with it, the dream to produce world class animes here in Dumaguete wouldn't really be far off...

Dumzville's Cultural Center

For a while there, when people talked about the “cultural scene” in Oriental Negros, it was mostly about one beauty pageant or another, with every town and every school bending over to crown all sorts of queens and kings. Indeed, a sad thing to note for a city that has produced two National Artists.

There were bright spots, like the

International Rondalla Festival and the
Philippine Madrigal Singers visit

And so, when we said—back in the summer of 2007—that we were going to lead a “cultural renaissance” of sorts in Dumaguete City, we didn’t expect there would be an explosion of a response from the community. The response was in some ways quite competitive, but in many ways it was ultimately good for the cultural health of the city.

Just think of the many, many things that captured our imagination and our cultural aspirations in the months since May last year: that cultural season (defined, for the most part, by the schoolyear, since Dumaguete is a University Town) had been a kaleidoscope of exhibitions and performances, both popular and traditional, that tried to engage all of the arts—and perhaps we can now rightfully reclaim for Dumaguete its mantle of being the true cultural center of the South.

The cultural year in Silliman included these:

the Second Open Dumaguete Biennial Terra Cotta Festival,
folk singer Grace Nono,
pianists Ingrid Santamaria and Reynaldo Reyes,
guitarist Michael Dadap,
violinist Jay Cayuca,
tenor Ramon Ma. Acoymo,
the Manila Symphony Orchestra (with pianist Cristine Coyiuto and conductor Helen Quach),
the New Voice Company’s
The Good Body (with Monique Wilson),
Tanghalang Pilipino’s double-bill of Gee-gee at Waterina and Welcome to IntelStar,
the Powerdance (with Douglas Nierras),
Actor’s Actors’ Love Letters (with Pinky Amador and Bart Guingona),
and the U.P. Guitar Orchestra;
art exhibitions by Aloha Laviña, Samuel Molina, Bong Callao, Razceljan Salvarita, Mark Valenzuela, Amihan Jumalon, Donnie Luis Calseña, Uno, Jana Jumalon-Alano, Hemrod Duran, and Is Jumalon;
talks by Johanna Poethig, Chris Brown, Jutze Pamate, Kitty Taniguchi, John Stevenson, and Myrna Peña-Reyes under the new Albert Faurot Lecture Series for Culture and the Arts;
and a spirited OPM concert by many of Silliman’s singing and dancing talents, including the Kahayag Dance Troupe.

There was also an assortment of events, cultural and otherwise:

ABS-CBN staged its national journalism summit in the Claire Isabel McGill Luce Auditorium,
and there was also a sneak preview of Jade Castro’s endearing film Endo, which StarCinema brought in even before its regular nationwide theater run. In February, Mariyah Gallery celebrated the Arts Month with an exhibit featuring the works of Napoleon Abueva, Nelfa Querubin, Meri Anecin Pejoska, Entang Wiharso, Sid Gomez Hildawa, Raul Isidro, Peter Bevan, Charlie Co, Dennis Ascalon, Kitty Taniguchi, Estrella “Tala” Contreras, Karl Aguila, Maria Taniguchi, Ambie Abaño, Andita Purnama, Sari Adita, and Danni Sollesta.

At the tail end of the season,

Tokyo University sent in a corps of dancers from Japan, together with the Ramon Obusan Dance Company.
Theater student Christie Angel Balansag also directed two plays, Sino Ba Sila, a farce by Juan Cruz Balmaseda, and
The Incredible Jungle Journey of Fenda Maria, a children’s play by Jack Stokes.
Fiddler on the Roof
Pinocchio

In the middle of all these, the rest of Dumaguete took note, and helped fill in the rest of the cultural slate.

Foundation University, through the efforts of its alumni association,
De La Salle University’s acclaimed singing group Kundirana, and later
brought in popular singer Nina.

Other local groups brought in more mainstream fare with concerts by

Sarah Geronimo,
Sitti Navarro,
and David Pomeranz.
