Construction of Robinsons Place Dumaguete is now on fullswing again. From the national highway, I could see that there are at least two backhoes and one hydraulic crane inside the construction site. The logo of Freyssinet has also been put on the fence of the Robinsons' lot.

Robinsons Place Dumaguete will be a "Hybrid Mall" which will have a lot of similarities to Powerplant Mall in Makati, and not the usual sameness and artificiality of indoor malls.

According to foxylady (former lease officer of Robinsons Malls who is currently working for local the RLC office:

"Hybrid malls" is the hottest concept in the industry nowadays. They are an attempt to conjoin large enclosed malls with an outdoor urban streetscape retail/entertainment component, with such attractions as multiplex cinemas, children's playscapes, and themed restaurants. The International Council for Shopping Centers (ICSC) calls this "the first major shift in regional mall configuration since 1956".

Hybrid malls pick up on the growing popularity of village-style shopping, with its connections to real communities. Developers of hybrid malls essentially create streetscape-type shopping experiences as an enhancement and shopping option on the outside of ever-bigger malls.

What this means is that businesses that once were peripheral to the mall, such as full-service restaurants, major bookstores, cinemas, home-furnishings stores, and services are grouped together. Not in the same mega-building, but often in open-air pedestrian walkways leading to the mall entrances. Some developers even incorporate bike and hiking trails into the area's overall design.

Yeah, your right. Even their white sands in that American Aquarium comes from Apo Island. This is why Apo Island is reponisble for absorbing so many international visitors each year in the province. Many would rather visit the real place than see it from an exhibit....

This new expat I spotted @ dumagueteinfo.com pretty much is in love with our baywalk. He has this collection of Rizal Boulevard photos in candid
Here's what he can say:

"No photo essay of life in Dumaguete would be complete without an exploration of this famous seaside attraction. I've now seen it at all times of day and in various conditions.

This posting brings me full circle in a way. My first interest in the Philippines was accompanied by a Google search which brought me to a post by a young American visitor who had attached several photos of Rizal Blvd.

At that time I was a frequent visitor to Cuba and I quickly realized that Dumaguete's modest Rizal outstripped (IMHO) the attractions of both Havana's Malecon and the Paseo de Marti (or Prado). Now I'm proud to post my own photos here."

Here are some of his photos:

Nope, there is no Kenney Rogers here. Hopefully we will have one once Robs will open. -crossing fingers- A good addition to the mushrooming popular fastfood outlets in the city..

Just as what Coffee said earlier, prepare P210.. That fare includes the bus trip from Cebu City towards down south Lilo-an, the fastcraft ferry trip from Lilo-an seaport to Sibulan, Neg. Or. seaport, and the jeepney ride that will take you here in Dumaguete from Sibulan....
Going back to Cebu City, then of course, you need to prepare the just about the same amount......... ;) :)

The thing about the current shopping situation in DUma is that they are scattered here and there. But most of all, shopping is just shopping only. There is no relaxation WHILE shopping. This robinsons should do just that.
I can just imagine it being swamped with college students.

I have some experience in large scale development, and it seems to me the structure will not be ready until mid-2010. And this is ONLY if they complete the foundation work within this calendar year (I am curious. Do you hear any bang bang type of pounding noise coming from the site when going by? This sound should come from the piling for the foundation. If you don't hear this sound, we should be alarmed that the foundation work is not being done...)
Kind or depressing thought, but hey, better late than never...

I wonder why some go right away to building the super structure and not starting with the foundations. Maybe it's because of the kind of soil that we have there?

I actually see some heavy equipment, but it seems they are not moving. Unlike in other sites where they are working 24 hours.

All large structures (and small) have significant foundation work.
And foundation work requires A LOT of activity, which is highly labor intensive. Which means many workers should be visible and many trucks delivering concrete and also steel bars.
If you are not seeing visible activity, that means they are not working on anything...
Troubling thought, as I am really looking forward to robinsons supermarket.

There were actually works done in the area many months ago, and that was the foundation. And they were working for 24 hours all those months!!! That lasted for about six months, I think, and afterwards they pulled out. I thought that the foundations were already finished but upon interview with some people I learned that some parts need to be reinforced further, and that's why the new contractor need to do some foundation works.

I don't know the extent of the new foundation works that need to be done by the new contractor.

they said the foundations needed to be "cured" for about many months. but its been so long...... super long...

anyway, kabulakan festival is fast approaching and one of the major sponsors of the event is Robinsons....................

johnnyS
May 10th, 2008, 01:19 PM
Yes, any foundation needs to be cured.
But there are many other works that can be completed while it's being cured. Things just don't come to a halt to wait for the curing.

I just hope that they are not having second throughts because they think Duma doesn't have enough population to support a mall...

nicko
May 10th, 2008, 01:34 PM
i do think that robinsons will definitely push through..... other than the press release that they are really pushing through, they are also sponsoring the kabulakan festival and they have already hanged several tarps in the city with their big logos printed on it..... they would not have sponsored that big event if in the first place they have decided not to continue with the mall... so i do think they will.............

We will be meeting with Robinsons people @ 6 p.m. on the 17th at the Italia resturant. Everybody is invited!!!

Yeah, the roads around the mall are already almost complete.

Nah, I guess they are holding us in suspense and putting us in suspended animation in great anticipation of this mall...Indeed there are problems but they are too little to cause the Robinsons people to have second thoughts. The market here is just too big for them to ignore. In fact, they even added another floor to their original two storey mall here, and from the design we could see that the mall would be very classy.

DUMAGUETE CITY, April 27 (PNA) -- The Bureau of Customs in Negros Oriental has submitted its proposal to Governor Emilio Macias II for the establishment of a marina/yacht port in Tambobo Bay in Siaton, Negros Oriental.

Dumaguete Port Collector Dr. Medolita Cabanag and Port Deputy Collector Datu Camad Ali submitted the proposal this week.

Deputy Collector Ali said that they made the proposal based on observations and a study on the present situation at the Tambobo Bay.

He said there were no less than a hundred yachts being docked at Tambobo Bay, majority of which are owned and operated by foreign nationals.

Ali added once the Tambobo Bay Marina/Yacht Basin will be in place, the Customs can assure its readiness of its operation.

First it was the 2nd International Rondalla Festival in 2007.

Next year in April 2009, Negros Oriental will again host the First NCCA International Dance Competition and Festival.

This was confirmed by Gov Emilio Macias II who was informed by BM Mariant Escano Villegas that we won the bid among 13 regions of the country, who favorably endorsed the NCCA resolution.

NCCA is the National Commission for Culture and the Arts. It has a budget of over P250M for promoting culture and the arts this year.

The formal announcement was made in Bacolod by NCCA Executive Director Cecile Guidote Alvarez after its international dance competition ended last week.

She said the First NCCA International Dance Festival will be participated in by 5 - 10 foreign dance companies and a counterpart number of Philippine companies which will present a wide range of dance forms including ballet and the flamenco. Important components of the festival will be an artist's forum, seminar workshops, and outreach performance throughout Negros Oriental.

The festival will also feature an artist's forum which will give a chance for local participants to interact with international dance artists. In its resolution, the NCCA said the festival aims to build global bridges of various dance forms to enrich the awareness and preservation of the world's cultural heritage.

The Province stands to gain from international exposure, cultural exchange, and the broadening of experience of Negros Orientals dance practitioners and aficionados, and cultural workers, Villegas added.

The NEGROS ORIENTAL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE & INDUSTRY held their annual general assembly last April 26 at Bethel Guest House. Keynote speaker was businessman-tycoon, Mr Julio Sy, Jr., developer and owner of the 26-hectares DUMAGUETE BUSINESS PARK AND IT PLAZA.

He announced the Phase II of the mega project is in its finishing stage. Phase II development includes additional commercial and residential development, a gas station, a business hotel, a bus terminal, a hospital / medical clinic and a government center.

Presently, Phase I development of the business park has already made a tedious impact on the city's local economy, which is the IT Center where TELETECH currently occupies most of the area with two buildings.

The park will capitalize Dumaguete's inherit strengths namely:

Tourism
BPO / IT
Medical Wellness Industries
Education
Residential (especially for expats / foreign retirees)

Thanks GearX for the info. I have seen the image. The shots are very very outdated. There are so many buildings / things / places that are not on the image. Probably the shot was taken early 2000. The baywalk is not yet even brick-layered. Wala pa ngang development sa business park since it looks so empty. No portal west, POs marketing still pre-burned state. etc, etc, etc

so based on these images, what year you think they were taken?

I'd say early 2000s (2003-2005)

My dad told me about SM just yesterday. The information is a bit vague so i'm gonna have to ask for more details. He has good connections in the city government and a friend of him works for SM.
So the rumor may turn out to be a fact afterall.. But i am still crossing my fingers.

More white sand beaches in Neg. Or. up for tourism development (http://www.positivenewsmedia.net/am2/publish/Tourism_24/More_white_sand_beaches_in_Neg_Or_up_for_tourism_development.shtml)

DUMAGUETE CITY, May 17 (PNA) -- Two white sand beaches in Negros Oriental will soon be developed into tourist destinations.

The white sand bar in Manjuyod and the undiscovered white sand beach near Luka wharf in Tanjay City are two of the next targets for tourism development in the province, said Bais City Mayor Hector Villanueva.

Villanueva said he will develop the area and make it into a world-class tourist facility.

He will carefully choose the design that will maintain the tourist destination's natural beauty.

Villanueva said he is also looking forward to making the area an alternative for dolphin and whale watching.

The mayor said he is now looking for possible sources of funds to begin with the tourist destination's development before 2009.

"There are a lot of beautiful places in the province where we do not have to travel far to relax and unwind," he said.

Meanwhile, 1st District Rep. Jocelyn Limkaichong also expressed plans to enhance the facilities at the Manjuyod white sand bar.

The white sand bar has an estimated area of not less than three hundred hectares of powdery fine sand during low tide. (PNA)

Coast Guard turns-over recovered oceanic scientific equipment to Japanese government (http://www.positivenewsmedia.net/am2/publish/Cities_And_Towns_23/Coast_Guard_turns-over_recovered_oceanic_scientific_equipment_to_Japanese_government.shtml)

DUMAGUETE CITY, May 17 (PNA) – The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) in Negros Oriental has turned over an ocean scientific equipment owned by the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) to a representative of the Japanese government.

The equipment, called an Argo float, is used to measure the temperature and salinity of the ocean in line with the study of Argo Information Center (AIC) on the effects of Global Warming.

The AIC is based in France which spearheads the oceanographic study also supported by the United Nations –World Climate Research Program and the World Meteorological Organization.

Local Coast Guard Commander Robert Patrimonio said the Argo float was intercepted by the fishermen in Barangay San Miguel, Bacong town in Negros Oriental in 2006.

The Argo float was then turned over to the Coast Guard headquarters where it had been kept for two years.

Patrimonio said he found the Argo float during an inventory and decided to contact the AIC France through the Internet.

The Japanese scientist from JAMSTEC, Dr. Nobie Shikama, said there are three thousand Argo floats executed among 24 countries that were involved in the oceans monitoring on climate change.

While the Philippines is not included among these countries, an estimated 12 or more Argo floats are beached in Philippine seashores.

Korea, China and the United States own some of these Argo floats.

Dr. Shikama said they could still locate the Argo floats because the antenna will continue to transmit signals to the Argo Information Center.

He said strong currents brought by typhoon and weather disturbances usually carry the floats.

The Japanese scientist thanked Patrimonio for turning over the ocean scientific equipment, the first to be recovered in Negros Oriental, as information transmitted by the float is more valuable than its actual cost.

The Argo data can be accessed through the Global Data Assembly Center via the Internet without any charge.

The float costs 22,000 US dollars each and will last for four years in the ocean. (PNA)

In daydreams I go back to Negros Oriental – the hum of the waters in Valencia, the beaches of Siaton and Guihulngan, the vast foliage expanse of Bais and Tanjay, the rustic charm of Dumaguete City, the spectacular marine life of the famed Apo Island … and a whole lot more.

But what identifies a mere tourist from a true habitué is the je ne sais quoi of Doomsville, term of endearment for those who call Dumaguete City home, or at the very least, have an intense love affair with the city.

Doomsville is a pleasant brew of the old and the new, an intermingling of the quaint and the fashionable, a mélange of the naive and the urbane and once you enter its realm, you’ll forever be in its thrall. Another thing that made people silly about Dumaguete is the whole café culture.

The café landscape of Dumaguete runs along an age barrier. The high-end coffee shops, like Coco Amigos, Mamia’s and Don Atilano, have the older generation as clientele. Here, you can observe glamorous albeit near-senescent women sitting around chatting about their apo’s, their haciendas and generally, times past; and it caters to expats too.

The other café scene is for the younger set, and can be categorized into three. First you have coffee shops for the non-smoking and the less adventurous kind. Lee Cimballi, Dunkin’ Donuts and Cafe Antonio to name a few. Here you can see students studying hastily for their next-hour-exams, or just folks who fancy ‘people-sighting’.

Second is the daytime café, where college studes and young professionals trot busily in and out, drowning their somnolent carcasses with caffeine. They also use this chance to temporarily get their minds off academic stuff and deadlines, to sip barako’s, eat quesadillas, play cards, sit together to chat, or simply, just to chill out. (Sted’s and Dumaguete Travel among others)

The ritual continues throughout the day, and soon, even the observer, becomes an integral part of daily routine. And with the setting of the sun, the scene changes into the night café culture of bars and rum-mills, giving a boost to sundown fun in the city. By this time, coffee is usually accentuated by a dose of alcohol, and more often than not, with a pack of smokes. No, more packs of smokes. Thus begins a relaxing and extended night with friends.

My history as a coffee monster stems from this small, unpretentious coffee shop along Silliman Ave called Cafe Memento. And true to its name, wherever one goes, one carries with him the memories and the home-ness of Doomsville.

In a quest to replicate a sharp description on places to dine in Dumaguete but wanting, I have captured them in photos instead.

metre: Spork (spôrk) an eating utensil combining features of a spoon and a fork.
1909, from spoon + fork.

HOY LUGAW!
You will never miss the "kaldero"(metal pot)--transformed into a dignified seat--along the stretch of Rizal Boulevard. More than the "lugaw," Hoy Lugaw (hey porridge. hahhaha. bloody porridge mate!) also offers tapsilog and all the other quick meals. [ambience--4 Sporks. be wary though, sitting in the "kaldero" for more than 15 minutes is such a discomfort; food--2 Sporks; price--5 Sporks]

SANS RIVAL
The closest you can have the al fresco Cafe--really by the roadside--experience. You can have a full meal--complete that is--for less than a hundred and thirty pesos. Come early though at lunchtime or dinnertime. The first time I had my lunch there, it was already bursting at the seams. Luck tagged me, I arrived just in time for a couple of diners to leave. [ambience-5 Sporks; food-4.5 Sporks; price-5 Sporks]

Obviously, one can catch me here binging my lunch money any given weekend.

CAFE ANTONIO at the Spanish Heritage
I spent the whole Black Saturday afternoon here checking papers--to beat the deadline-- and meet the friendly regulars. The coffee is good and it has wi-fi. But the wi-fi connection is way too expensive--at php100/hour. I'd rather got to Mc Donald's, Miracle Mile Book Cafe, Noriter or of all places, the Dumaguete City Police Precinct--for a free wi-fi. hahahha. I love the place for its regular art exhibits by local painters and the cafe's reclusive ambience. [ambience-5 Sporks; food-n.a. since I haven't really tried. Just coffee. Though I notice it takes longer for your order (communicated thru a two-way radio) to arrive; price-3.5 Sporks)

COCO AMIGO
Expats frequent this place. The American-size serving makes you schedule your next visit to Coco Amigo in the distant future. hehehe. But the food is good! Meanwhile, for those who want to get intimate with their date and smoke at the same time (smoke and get intimate? hahaha), there is a small room (with few tables) for you. [ambience-4 Sporks; food-4 Sporks; price-2 Sporks. Too pricey for a Duma resto]

MAMIA'S
If the minimalist interior and the classy troupe that frequent this resto adds appetite, then, by all means, go to Mamia's. hahaha. The Spanish dishes they're offering are, of course, muy delicioso! But it goes with the price. [ambience-5 Sporks; food-4.5 Sporks; price-2 Sporks] Hola Senor Arano! Como esta usted? hahhaha

So there. The first installment.

two big constructions at the downtown area. one beside Meryl (used to be a pay-per-park area) and the one across the city library (used to be the bulakan).. crossing my fingers hoping both will bring something new, big and interesting to add up to the city's growing skyline.

Ritche,
You made this post a while back. Is the "foxylady" you are referring to a lease agent of Robinsons? Do you have contact number? Thanks.

---------------------------

"Construction of Robinsons Place Dumaguete is now on fullswing again.

Some developers even incorporate bike and hiking trails into the area's overall design."

I'll try to look for it.

@Nicko: Yes I did join the meeting, but they were talking a lot about the rumors of SM coming to Dumaguete. Yeah, i saw some items about SM and it was said that they would open in 2012 at the same lot that we were talking about in Mangnao, which is now, BTW, painted with deep blue. I don't know if they would soon put up the SM logo in that area...

Don't worry, these malls will materialize sooner or later.

I don't think SM's coming is still considered to be a rumor. A lot of people now talk about it and the fact that my dad told me about it means they are indeed coming. He got the news from some city administrators. I also had some web search and i happened to encounter some brief discussion about it in a a blog who's writer is working for SM. He shared about the company showing him the SM Dumaguete location, which will be located here:

http://img360.imageshack.us/img360/8006/smud5.jpg

With that, SM will just be near its strongest competitor in the city since Robinsons is just around the corner.

http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/8242/robql3.jpg

Of course, i am not expecting SM will be here in a jiff. Probably around 2010 - 2015, we can see the big blue structure.

This may be a strage question, but can pre-school aged children speak tagalog, or visayan only?
On tv, all entertainment programs, including the programs for children, are in tagalog, so I am assuming that Dumaguete children know tagalog. Or is this incorrect?

nicko
May 22nd, 2008, 04:25 AM
^^ i say that highly depends on what kind of langauage the child is exposed in the family. in the case of my little sister, she does not know how to speak tagalog during her toddler-preschool years since we speak english to her all the time. she grew up getting used to it. she speaks it. she knows cebuano and she understands it, though. as she got in to elementary, we realized that she has really poor tagalog-speaking skills, which is also important becuase she has a filipino subject taught in school

so despite the strong influences in media communication, whether it be tagalog, cebuano, english, i still think it is rooted on what kind of language the child is exposed at home and the environment. imho

Hmmm, I wonder how SM is going to move the schoolbuildings in Mangnao, and for how long? In my own estimation, this would take no less than 1 year, and another year for the construction, making us wait for at least two years to have an SM mall here. If they start moving out this year, then it would take us 2010-2011 at the earliest to have an SM mall.

Hi Nicko,

Would it be then safe to say most Dumaguete families (families that care about education of their children) speak English to their children such that by the time the children are of preschool age, then can understand it?

And do the preschools in Dumaguete teach children in English? I mean, do preschool teachers use English (as opposed to Visayan) to teach children math and other subjects?

^^ yes, johnnyS. in fact, its the whole philippine education curriculum that uses the english language as the medium for teaching / communication. in other words, schoolers are taught using the english language in all subjects except the FILIPINO subject (if in a private school). Public schools, on the other hand use tagalog in more of the subjects such as HISTORY, ARTS, MUSIC, PHYSICAL EDUCATION, and of course the FILIPINO subject. and as far as i know, speaking cebuano (visayan) is highly discouraged in school campuses here. schoolers are highly encouraged to communicate using the english / filipino (tagalog) languages.

anyway, it was my first time to go up to the 4th level of Portal West yesterday to see the Le Travellers' Cafe and i was struck by its beauty. i think the whole level was occupied and daym, the view of the city skyline was breathtaking. although i am more excited for the opening of the al fresco center at the 5th level soon.

the cafe is beautiful. very spacious. it has CNN KTV, Korean Spa, Resto, and a boutique situated in one place and harmoniously combined. it kinda reminded me of ayala cebu's entertainment complex. dim lights, metropolitan music, glassy walls with beautiful view of silliman campus in one side and the city skyline on the other. definitely sumthing new for the city..

Agree. That's how exactly it's done in DGT setting. As a kid, I recall there were times we were being penalized for speaking the local language , Cebuano, which is erroneously called a dialect. And I thought then that it was perfectly ok, believing that Visayans were the minority.

But I think there is something terribly wrong here. Why should Cebuano be discouraged when in fact it's the second most widely spoken language? And as Visayans we should be proud of our own native culture, one of the pillars of which is our own language, Cebuano. Until 1975, Cebuano had the most native speakers. Even here in Metro Manila, where I've been based for 10 years, it' often that I encounter Visayans. It was only overtaken in rank by Tagalog because of the national policy of imposing a language of the minority and forcing it down the throats of the entire country. And what better way to do it, than by encouraging its use and discouraging the use of the local language. In due time, the policy will only lead to the Tagalization of the entire country, giving it a false sense of being homogenenous. And to think, there are studies which show that a student at an early age learns better by using the mother tongue.

The good thing is that generally Visayans have a good command of English. And many I've met who come from Luzon attest to this.

Yeah, I like the fourth level of the Portal West, it's glassy and nice...although I don't exactly like the colors of the wall.

Dumaguete-Sibulan airport
rehab completed this month
BY RENE GENOVE

The improvement and rehabilitation of the Dumaguete-Sibulan Airport that cost P74 million will be completed this month.

Projects undertaken at the airport were asphalt overlay, rehabilitation of runway lights and the renovation of the airport terminal building. The installation of runway lights started last year and will be completed on Monday.

The asphalt overlay and renovation of the terminal building is under the auspices of the Department of Transportation and Communication, while the rehabilitation of runway lights is under the Land Transportation Office.

In line with Malacañang’s directive to accelerate infrastructure projects under the “Super Regions,” improvement and rehabilitation works were done at the Dumaguete Domestic Airport.

The runway lights project has been allocated about P74 million from the P22.6 billion allotted last year.

The head of the construction project is Christopher Ruiz, while the asphalt overlay and the renovation of the terminal building is being undertaken by the team of Gerardo Velicaria of the DOTC.*RG

Just had this news.. Judy Ann, Ryan Agoncillo and some of their close friends were here last 2 weeks ago to celebrate Juday's birthday.. This was kept a secret from the showbiz hungry fplks of Mega Manila. Many wondered where she could have gone on her birthday since she never announced it during her interviews. They only found out that she was here when she was back in Manila.

Not that I'm crazy over her coming but it's just flattering to know that they chose to visit Dumaguete to celebrate her birthday. I guess they were here for about a week. She mentioned that if it's going to be her birthday, she should have it somewhere special. Apparently, she found Dumaguete special. :)

Soo many good news. Dumaguete is quiet, but as they said, when it seems nothing's happening, plenty of things are happening. President Arroyo slipped in unknowingly last week.

And then astig ang mga products ng Dumaguete: we won the first and second places in the International Food Exhibition (IFEX) at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City last May 16 to 18. We beat the delicacies from Bohol. Truly Negros Oriental is not just about great sceneries and preserved environment, but also great and world class food which is now among the best in the Philippines.

And then, we might be having the best health care facilities in the Negros Island soon, and one of the best in the Visayas.

Watch out guys. There are just plenty of things happening around...

Two of the Province’s local favorite delicacies got the blue ribbon for being the Most Trendy Products in the International Food Exhibition (IFEX) currently being held at the SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City.

Orient Foods Inc.’s fruity bar got the plum award, while Chantilly’s budbod kabog came in a close second.

The Central Visayas food producers took centerstage in this year’s IFEX as they were given priority in terms of promotion of product display (at the forefront of the main exhibition hall).

The other contestants representing Negros Oriental were Sans Rival with its jam squares; and backyard businessmen Jose with his budbod sa Tanjay, and Ivon with her baye-baye.

The IFEX was organized by the Department of Trade & Industry through the Center for International Trade Expositions & Missions (CITEM) Partner Region Program.

Maybe this thread is a little spammy... but anyway Hello Echir and others, Thought I would ad my Expat perspectivre to living in Dumaguete.

The Robinsins Mall is not begun lest anyone be misled, They are testing the area again with various equipment. At best they are beginning the foundation, but that was yesterday, maybe by now they have the first floor ready :)

SM is in the cat bird seat, waiting to see if Robinsons goes soon or not. If Robinsons is delayed, then SM has no rush to complete their plans. Just good bussiness, let someone else test the waters first, then jump in.

Dumaguete has many hurdles to overcome before it is ready for unbridled developement, but certainly change will come. Once a mall is in place the area will no doubt grow very quickly.

Any expats may ask me anything and I will do my best to give the best info I can about Dumaguete, from a a resident expat's viewpoint.

Dumaguete is fast becoming a mecca for expats looking for a peaceful place to live in the Philippines. Dumaguete has what many expats are looking for, nice beaches, absolutely some of the best scuba diving in the Philippines, and a variety of lifestyle choices for living, locating, and socializing. Those who settle in Dumaguete seem to love it. There are enough ammenities in Dumaguete to make life comfortable, with the added advantage of a rural setting, low cost of living, and generally friendly people. If you like to explore Dumaguete, there are mountain treks, volcanos, and World War Two relic sites here. If you like the ocean, there is property still available to purchase on the ocean, and many excellent rental property opportunities as well.

If you want to relax and kick back in the company of other expats in Dumaguete, the Rizal boulevard is a mecca for expats seeking a cold San Miguel beer in one of the many outdoor cafes. The Why Not Disco is famous around the area as the featured nightspot. Dancing and live bands on featured nites make it a frequent stop for tourists and local college students alike. The cool sea breeze and international ambiance make the boulevard a top gathering spot in Dumaguete.

As an example, Mikes Adventure-Diveshop features tasty Mexican food in their small outdoor cafe. Adventure Diveshop also features moutain trekking and expert guided scuba diving adventures on nearby Apo Island. Mike is an Expat from California, who has settled here with his wife and children, one of many foreigners who now calls Dumaguete home.

Many expats come here to retire with their Filipina wives and families. Often the Filipina wives are originally from Dumaguete and bring their husbands here to setle in the peaceful surroundings of Negros Oriental.

Other expats come here to vacation, either to dive or stay in one of the local resorts. Once here, some become permanent residents. It's often like that, Dumaguete appeals to the kind of Expat that wants a relatively quiet environment, close to natural surroundings, but with a good level of services and ammenities.

If you are planning to visit the Philippines, consider a visit to Negros and Dumaguete. I have been here 3 years, and have made great friends and find the outliying areas wonderful to explore on a motor cycle. Truely adventure at your fingertips.

Swimming, boating, bankas and kayaks, hiking trails,(especially at Balinsasayao) the twin lakes, Picnicing, tables, shelters for rent or free depending what lake, Floating houses at Balanan which you can rent and ferry back and forth on a rope. Tree house rental at Balanan.

My suggestion research all you can about the history of each place before you go, there is usually no emphasis on historical perspective on lakes when you get there. For example Balanan was formed by an earthquake in 1987. An interesting story.

see Blanan Lake (http://dumaguetenews.blogspot.com/2008/02/trekking-to-balanan-lake.html) for a photo essay on riding to balanan on motorcycles.

I found one to start it, an old colonial era house one block off the boulevard.

Talking about the airport, is there any plan to extend the runway?

Maybe they will plan to do that once the diversion road is completed, so there is an alternative route for traffic.

I remember an old post on this site, asked if a road can pass under a runway. Well, Manchester Airport (about 8kms from my house where I grew up) has a road going under the runway and taxiway, ever since I can remember, and it's still just as strong now, as when it was built.

If you've ever landed in Dumaguete, you will notice that the planes reverse thrusters are always on full blast, until the plane almost comes to a standstill. It would be useful and safer to have a longer runway.

November last year, we almost landed in DUmaguete, but had to divert to Cebu, coz the reverse thrusters weren't working. On time unta mi, pero 2 hrs late tungod ana.

For me, the first real sign of progress will be anything above ground; kung haligi, bongbong, or even mass deliveries of construction materials or scaffolding.

It's frustrating di ba, when you know something exciting is on its way, pero dugay kaayo ug magabot.

No building is in progress as of last week as I looked in. They may be redoing the pilings as they determined the original clay substrate will not hold the three story revised plans. not sure how they will resolve this. Time will tell.

I really don't think, even with the diversion road, the runway can be extended inland. There will be chaos among all those residents and business establishments that rely on that north road.

I think the only way is to reclaim the sea (similar to Robinsons land) and land towards the sea.

Upgrades to Dumaguete airport are to be completed this month. They don't include runnway extension at this juncture. The runnway is already extended into the sea from a previous upgrade. Ther is a brief article on Aviation Philippines (http://aviation-philippines.blogspot.com/)

Dumaguete is fast growing, and attracts expats who desire a relatively quiet place to enjoy their life, but with many of the ammenities they desire. With the expansion of Silliman Medical Center underway, and the talk of shopping malls coming, there will be a broader cross section of foreigners attracted to Dumaguete.

Singapore has been reclaiming, and Cebu too. But some environmentalists would raise a howl of protest if this process is done. I guess reclamation is good if following proper environmental procedures (which means securing ECCs and other requirements). And of course there are new technologies such as building steel platforms or putting piers out in the sea. Again some uses would need reclamation.

But I am not really an expert in this field, and I still would like to see more developments and more amenities rising in Dumaguete soon which would make it more livable and more worth living in. Without the traffic, pollution and environmental problems of course.

Which reminds me: the portions of QC where UP and Ateneo are located are actually very green and very livable, in the middle of the big metropolis. But wait until you go out of the gates of these campuses that you will be confronted with all the traffic and the urban mess.

But anyway, it's a big surprise for many people that there are still patches of green in the middle of a sprawling metropolis such as Metro Manila. Hmmm, I hope Dumaguete doesn't lose it's greens and peaceful ambience.

I've been facing my company-issued laptop the whole day yesterday (until 11 p.m.) and today and it just bogged down...Andaming virus (from USBs of my colleagues). The reason I am here in the hotel's internet cafe. Some colleagues from Mindanao would tell me that our room is like a callcenter as all of us are facing our own laptop. Whew!!! I am waiting for my colleagues to fix my laptop...

I agree with you garthin, looks like dgte airport needs longer runway say 2.5 km ideally....i had an experience landing with cbu pacfic dc-9's full flaps down and full reverse thrusters that almost touched the perimeter fence beside the runway for full stop!

What i like about Dumaguete Airport is,those huge and tall trees lined up on the other side of the runway.

There is more to Dumaguete than pretty pictures, Dumaguete has an ambiance suited for many expats. Not to say the boulevard is not party central, it offers many options to the tourist, but for the full time resident, there are many attributes in Dumaguete that attract foreigners and their wives.
Cascading waterfals, hot springs, cool lakes, as well as a green mountain surroundings with friendly filipinos. The real Philippines is there for seeing. I don't mean the upmarket 21 year old and his or her cell phone, that you get in Cebu or Manila. Here you can see people living the simple life, and willing to help you if you are in need. Fine restaurants are in evidence for that evening out, but native Karynderias with local delicacies are also plentiful.
It is the choice that dumaguete offers that gives it it's appeal. Dumaguete Journal (http://dumaguetenews.blogspot.com/)

The Dumaguete Expat scene centers around the Rizal Boulevard, that is the common wisdom, but does it really?

There are many expats here that live quiet lives in nearby communities, comming to Dumaguete to shop, or take care of banking and other errands. Dauin, Valencia, Siaton, Sibulan, Amlan, and other quiet towns all are growing in expat populations.

Dumaguete then stands to to be the hub for shopping, banking, dining or other social activities. With the addition of proposed malls Dumaguete is on the cusp of a transformation. Keeping its charm and serving the needs of a growing affluent element is the challenge.

Tomorrow's picture of Dumaguete is a congested city suffering from disrepair and social maladies.

Along with historic developments in Dumaguete comes the rapid population growth significantly so because of the continuing influx of migrants from either other provinces or even the bigger cities.

"Among the major problems this City will face are traffic congestion, and informal settlements," says Ned Carlos, principal architect of Carlos & Antique Architects. "These problems will get worse at the first half of this century, posing great challenges to City officials and residents."

Until we learn from the mistakes of megacities like Metro Manila and Metro Cebu, Dumaguete City can never spur proper urbanization, and what we hope for our beloved Oriental Negros would already be dead, Carlos warned.

He recalled that in 1905, one of the great city planners, Daniel Burnham, submitted his proposal for carrying out the master plans for the City of Manila - three years before he prepared the plan for the City of Chicago.

"Burnham was the legendary architect responsible for carrying out the master plan for the cities of Washington DC, Chicago and the Philipines' summer capital, Baguio City, where his name is immortalized through the Burnham Park," Carlos added.

The vision of Burnham was to make Manila the most beautiful city in the Far East just as Washington DC is the best planned city in the United States. He prepared the master plan of Manila for a population of 800,000. The city's population in 1903 was only 223,029. The plan was to make Manila a city of natural and architectural wonders, complemented with parks and plazas with fountains that add to the charm and refreshment of the value of the park.

The plan for the City of Manila was truly something grand, and as Burnham would put it, "...Pearl of the Orient". Unfortunately, only a fraction of his plan was carried out.

"Dumaguete is on the same road, until we recognize that urbanization is really about the physical environment, nature or man made: visually pleasing (at most times exhilarating), functional, livalbe, and eco-freindly," Artchitect Carlos said.

Excellent quote.
It is nice to know that a recognized architect has publicly stated the obvious problems with rapid growth in a city that does not have even the current infrastructure to meet certain needs of the populace. That meaning electric grid, water supply, and waste management issues.

I do have to chuckle at the reference to Washington DC as an example of a well planned city, yes 150 years ago, today Washington is a ghetto surrounding the Capital area.

but on a positive note, Meeting with officials on a fact finding mission from Region 12 Environmental resources management recently, I discovered that there are efforts to establish better waste water treatment, solid waste disposal, and recycling efforts.
Public awareness is the biggest problem in that regard, making people aware that it is their best interest to manage resources, and buy into conservation.

The politics and bussiness interests aresomething else again, not something that can easily be changed.

There's a LOT of new sattelite imagery at Google Earth/Maps. Just a few weeks ago we had nothing at all in Negros Oriental. Now we have at least the town centers of:

- Canlaon
- Vallehermoso
- Guihulngan
- La Libertad
- Jimalalud
- Tanjay (mostly)
- Pamplona
- Sibulan
- Dumaguete
- Valencia
- Bacong
- Siaton

Places that we don't have yet are Tayasan, Ayungon, Bindoy, Manjuyod, Mabinay, Bais, Amlan, San Jose, Dauin, Zamboanguita, Santa Catalina, Bayawan, and Basay.

Lakbay Aral, means “study tour”, and in that context I had the pleasure to meet Hannah Meditar, a member of the government agency that concerns itself with waste treatment and environmental issues. Working out of South Cotobato (region 12), she was a participant on a fact finding mission to Several Negros communities. Lakbay aral is organized and sponsored by Environmental Governance 2 a USAID project in which Mr. Ferdinand Esguerra is the regional coordinator of South and Central Mindanao.
The first group had a total of 31 participants.

Provincial Technical Working Group (PTWG):
1. Cotabato Province - 6 participants - 1 Provincial Planning and Development Office (PPDO) and 5 active PTWG members)
2. South Cotabato - 4 participants Provincial Environmental Management Officer (PEMO) Ramon B. Ponce de Leon and active PTWG members.

Municipal LGUs
1. Magpet - 6 participants: MENRO, 5 active TWG members
2. Pres. Roxas - 6 participants MENRO, 5 active TWG members
3. Kabacan - 6 participants Hon. Mayor George Tan, 5 active TWG members

Ecogov
2 participants

DENR Environmental Management Bureau (EMB)
1 participant

Hannah’s office is DENR-Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) based in Koronadal City , Region 12. Its vision is “a nation empowered to protect our finite natural resources, attuned to the pursuit of sustainable development, for a clean and healthy environment that enhances the Filipino quality of life for present and future generations”. Its mission is “to restore, protect and enhance environmental quality towards good public health, environmental integrity and economic viability”. Locally, EMB visions a “Pollution-free Region XII” and to realize its mission “to establish and carry out the vision, to ensure public health, environmental protection and safety and to adhere excellent practice of good governance”.

Their mission was to examine some newer facilities for waste water treatment and solid waste disposal. The idea was to gather information and see if some ideas could be taken back and modeled by other communities in Region 12.

Dumaguete was one of the communities examined both for waste water treatment from the public market, and its solid waste management program. In addition the group surveyed local recycling efforts, and visited local organizations involved with making products from various recycled materials. There are a variety of programs that many people might not be aware of. For example some barangays and local universities are recycling a wide array of materials including

• demonetized currency
• plastic bottles and bags
• newspaper
• vermiculture composting projects
• glass

The Vermiculture composting facility is located in Barangay Calindagan. They are using biodegradable waste to manufacture compost for gardening. St. Pauls University is involved in the Plastics recycling, making shopping bags and rope from plastic bottles among other products. Here is a picture of the Mayor of the Municipality of Kabacan in North Cotabato, Hon. George B. Tan examining products made from recycled paper.

What I learned from talking to Hannah was that there are indeed many people in the Philippines who are concerned about the environment and pollution, both in the government and private sectors. While these initially may be small efforts, every effort contributes to a better environment. What I was not aware of was the depth of local interest in researching the conversion and use of recycled products.

Dumaguete just needs to promote what they already have and expand their efforts and it could become a model for other small cities.

The Lakbay Aral group also visited Apo Island one of Dumaguete's nearby diving and tourist meccas. They snorkeled the sanctuary and did an intro to diving experience. Apo Island is one of Philippines Priemier eco sanctuaries and diving locals.

Take a pump boat, either take the next available for a few pesos, or hire a boat to take you and return same day, 1000 plus. I stay in a native rental house for 500 pesos, the resorts are geared foe tourists and charge accordingly, but offer full service for divers. Take dry clothes! Leave from Malatapay Market pier. Weds, is market day a real treat in itself.

Hmm, I don't know about the above pics ( I suppose I would be very impressed if I were young), but I went to cafe antonio today for the first time, and was really impressed. Very nice decor and preservation of the original architecture (or recreation of).

I liked their drinks also. :)

Following the info in this forum, my wife and I plan to visit the recommended restos/cafes one by one.

The Negros Island Sustainable Agricultural and Rural Development Foundation Inc. is joining the bid for hosting the World Organic Congress in 2011.

The NISARD delegation from Negros island will be leaving for Modena, Italy on June 14, where the congress, held every year, will take place in countries practicing organic agriculture farming.

In the delegation, among others, are Board Member Erwin Michael Macias, Negros Oriental representatives Jocelyn Limkaichong (1st district), George Arnaiz (2nd district) and Henry Pryde Teves (3rd district).

Macias said the intention to bid has been accepted by the World Organic Congress, but they still have to defend and convince the member-countries that NISARD has the edge in hosting the congress.

Although the hosting will entail an estimated expenses of P30 million, the calculated return of investment will be doubled, he added.

In the Philippines, only NISARD has applied for the bidding, and its strong contender, Korea, which has applied several times.

Macias said most international organizations which are into agriculture promotion would chose nations that are highly agricultural as event host. Compared to Korea, Philippines has a strong possibility of winning, he said.

Should it happen, Macias said NISARD still has more than two years to prepare for the weeklong events, and they plan to conduct activities, three days in Negros Oriental, and three days in the Occidental side.

The electric easyride is not cost effective if one expects private operators to shell out the hefty price to buy one. As public transportation maybe.
Interesting the electric trikes, this something I proposed on the DI forum months ago. Actually even a 4 stroke gas powered trike made efficiently with low weight and smaller size would help reduce emissions sifgnificantly, reducing emmissions by 10% percent could reduce fuel consumtion by millions of pesos a year and hence emmissions.

This was in the Sun Star;
Mayor wants suspension order on tricycle franchises lifted

VALENCIA Mayor Rodolfo Gonzalez Jr. wants the order, imposed by Malacañang officials freezing the issuance of new tricycle franchises by local government units throughout the country, be lifted.

While Dumaguete City Government officials had complied with the Malacañang as it no longer accepted new franchises, Gonzales describes such as unproductive and contrary to people's welfare.

Gonzalez said as much as he wanted to help those who earn a living by driving a tricycle, he is at mercy of the Malacañang order.

"My hands are tied up to this Malacañang suspension order on issuance of franchises since doing otherwise would subject me to several cases, which will include the administrative charges," said Gonzales.

According to the mayor, once Malacañang heeds his call and the suspension is removed, local legislators of his town could start deliberating on the request of the transport sector to up the trike fares in view of the skyrocketing costs of fuel and spare parts.

Valencia Information Officer Des Tilos explained that Section 2 of Executive Order 712 issued by Malacañang ordered for the immediate review of existing rules and regulations issued by local government units.

The same order directed the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) to "advise local chief executives to suspend the issuance of new tricycle franchises while respecting those that have been issued already."

Tilos said Mayor Gonzalez is hoping the suspension order will be lifted so he can act on a petition filed by a group of drivers in Valencia seeking a fare increase.

The petition was filed by members of the Tricycle Operators Drivers Association of Valencia before the Municipal Council last week.

The same petition also seeks to amend a local ordinance granting franchises and the regulation of the operations of tricycles within the town.
****************end quote

This reafirms that all politics is indeed local. just another example of a politician trying to serve the needs of his constituents. Long term repercussions be damned.

A compromise might be; maintain a freeze on new trikes, give a small fare increase allowance to existing operators, but tie it to upgrading trikes to real emission standards, and phase out all two stroke motorcycles.
once that is accomplished, (yea I know), offer incentives and local grants to develop alternative environmentally less abusive systems. Whether that be electric trikes, or just more efficient ones. It is not like there are not several major universities here to help with the engineering and planning.

I did a calculation a while ago based on I think 2000 trikes, so many kilometers a day etc. now there are 3000. I believe( if i remember correctly) if one could make a trike 10% more fuel efficient it would save using a million or so pesos less gas per annum (spread over the total number of trikes). That much less hydrocarbon emissions could not hurt.

Five New Places to Have Great Food

_________________________________________________________________

#2 NIKKI'S KITCHEN

http://bp3.blogger.com/_RW4jMtD7ing/SEkfa4G5iMI/AAAAAAAAAm8/cj2xCqZ5xkI/s1600/Nikki%27s%2BKitchen%2B2.JPG

Along Avenida Sta. Catalina, just two doors away from the popular Café Noriter, we have a little restaurant that goes by the name of Nikki’s Kitchen.

It’s a charming place that owes much of its appeal to the whimsy of its design. Its walls are covered with paintings and ink drawings made by its Korean owner, Nikki Kim (a former top model in Seoul), herself. The resulting art works are fluid in style and reminds me of the best New Yorker illustrations—all of which lends to the pastel, bistro-style ground floor an easy charm that soothes.

On the second floor, one gets a totally different world altogether: there are curtains and low tables, and antique fixtures that lend to the place an exotic Oriental ambience to the dining experience.

http://bp1.blogger.com/_RW4jMtD7ing/SEkfbdDRX-I/AAAAAAAAAnE/9JgRLzlMaQY/s1600/Nikki%27s%2BKitchen%2B1.JPG

The food itself is varied, and is categorized to five main groups: Filipino, Japanese, pan-Asian, European, and Mexican—which means one gets a variety of food cultures, fusion-inspired, from litson kawali to tongkatso yasay, from carne de salsa roa, to tacos de pollo, from beef curry to bulgogi, from curry crepes to bistek Tagalog.

The result is a quality that is largely delicious—although I must admit that in trying to encompass all kinds of dishes from all over the world, the menu becomes too crowded and no specialty emerges to make the restaurant a must-go place. Still, despite that, this takes the top two slot in my list.

#1 GABBY'S BISTRO

But for the best food—ever—in Dumaguete, one needs only to go the short distance to the enclave of Bantayan, along Rovira Road, where a stylish new compound by the name of Florentina Homes houses a little restaurant by the name of Gabby’s Bistro. Gabby, of course, is Gabby del Prado, a young chef trained in one of the best culinary schools in the country, who has returned home to Dumaguete to open this intimate restaurant.

I love the place, which reminds me of a delightful Swiss chalet made more fanciful by quirky wall art by Gabby and his mother, who happens to be a painter. (They’ve even made their comfort room a piece of caricature art.)

http://bp2.blogger.com/_RW4jMtD7ing/SEkgLL-L_II/AAAAAAAAAnU/2PSRwoFSn-8/s1600/Gabby%27s%2BBistro%2B2.JPG

Beside the obvious charm, the one reason to go to this restaurant is the food, which goes best with Gossips, their house wine. I would suggest starting with the Adobo a la Gabby, a succulent affair with marinated chicken that is soft to the tongue, its sauce a perfect blend of sourness I have never encountered before with adobo. In fact, it is the sauce for most of the items in the menu that opens doors to our experience with each dish.

The chili sauce for the Oriental shrimp skewers, grilled to perfection, brings out a delectable taste.

The fish teriyaki has an intensity and a tenderness that I love.

The Cajun chicken fingers—beer-battered chicken strips with pomodoro—are delicious. Everything else in the menu—the tuna and olives penne pasta, the grilled pork chop pomodoro…--are delicious.

^Florentina Homes is owned by the family of the great animator, Jose Ramon del Prado, who is now pursuing his master's in animation in New York. His very own brother is the chef of Gabby's Bistro.

i always had the idea to drop by and eat there everytime i pass by rovira but everytime i try to check the crowd, i get intimidated and then back out. whew. its always full of yuppies, and foreign faces (europeans and koreans) especially at night. maybe i just need to bring some of my friends next time..

same thing with Cafe Mamia's..

anyway, HAYAHAY Gourmet Pizzas now occupies a space in Insular Hotel. It had its soft opening this afternoon and until now, it's full of customers. the interior is nice but it's distinctly different from the tropical look of the main HAYAHAY bistro coz it's made to fit the modern surroundings of the city. although, it has an al fresco area where it has the distinct look of the tropical HAYAHAY setting. It has also a small area of the HAYAHAY Tiangge where Havaianas, crocs, and other footwear apparels are sold................

A recent post on another forum was expressing a dislike for so many trikes and motorcycles in Dumaguete, My response was in effect yes there are trafic problems here, but look at any large city in the Philippines for bigger problems.

All we can do is offer ideas for solutions to our own situation. Here is my response:

Historically Dumaguete has allways had more motorcycles per capita than other cities. At one time not so many years ago there were few if any cars, everyone had scooters.

It is the way it is here. Lately of course, cars have increased in numbers. Driving in the philippines in general is not like driving in a western country, no matter where you are. Traffic lights or not, drivers are typical undisciplined and seemingly unaware of the dangers of having a two year old stand on the seat, four people on a 100cc, txting while driving etc.

I would say that probably you could go anywhere in Southeast Asia and see the same habits. Even go to eastern Europe and drive in Poland etc. a very different experience. But mostly cars, obviously.

Thee stories you told here, while ptobably true, are I think exagerating the risk and situation extant here. It really surprises me that there are so few accidents given the driving habits.

I too have riden bikes all my life. The most valuble training I had for Dumaguete driving was Trials riding. The people here are actually very skilled and exhibit excellnt balance and kinesthetic skills, masked by their apparent casual style and lack of the fear of consequences.

Filipinos are generally more aware of their surroundings and very observant when driving. you are being seen and watched whether you know it or not.

One of the interesting conventions is approaching an intersection and not letting the other guy crossing your path know that you really see him. You do of course, but eye contact has a point of effect. Whereas if you can catch the eyes of an oncomming trike driver soon enough, you got him. If you wait too long he simply seems to ignore your stare and will procede as if he does not see you.

The danger here(philippines in general) comes from intoxicated drivers at night or even in the day. Alcohol is the intervening variable that is responsible for most injuries and fatalities. There is no DUI here, No enforcement etc. everyone who drinks, also rides.

Unlike the U.S. where one takes little responsibility for others actions while driving, relying on a social contract of traffic laws to be observed, here driving is a group experience, you watch the other guy,he watches you.

The other fact about the traffic downtown is that yes it is congested at daytime peak hours, but still, unlike larger cities at night there is virtually no traffic after 9 PM except some along Perdices and the BVLD.

Not to say there are not issues to be addressed, reducing tricycles or regulating them somehow, it is not as bad as the picture you paint IMHO.

Math wiz joins US contest
BY ALEX PAL

Talk of Math and many kids will groan and stay away from the topic.

But here's a teenager who loves math. “Math is fun,” says Gregorio Uymatiao III. Iggy, 15, as his classmates call him, is an incoming fourth year student at the Holy Cross High School in Dumaguete City .

He has just returned from the United States , where he competed in the Amerian Regional Math League held May 30 and 31 in Las Vegas , as part of the 30-member Philippine delegation. The delegation competed in two divisions with Iggy in Division A. There were four guest teams from outside the United States and the Hongkong team placed first.

The Philippine Team A landed the 46 th slot, in a field of over 80 teams, mostly from all over the United States .

“We felt a little bit disappointed at not winning the contest, considering that last year's Philippine team landed the 30th spot,” Iggy said. This is his first time to join an international math competition although he has brought honors to his school in the MTAP in the last five years.

For the ARML, the students were asked questions ranging from trigonometry, geometry, complex algebra, which they learned from the Math Trainor's Guild.

The MTG is an organization of math teachers from various schools throughout the country. In Dumaguete, the MTG meets at Silliman University High School on Saturdays.

“We have to study more,” Iggy said.

Studying, though, is not really Iggy's strong point as his father, Gregorio Uymatiao Jr., would attest.

“He's just like any other high school boy. I also keep on encouraging him to study because he needs to be motivated,” Greg said. Greg makes it a point to be his son's math tutor before he joins competitions.

“My dad is the best tutor,” Iggy said. All these math tutorials, however, are Greg's way of preparing his son for the real world.

“I keep reminding Iggy that being the eldest boy, he will someday be handling the family's construction business,” Greg said.

“I still want to join more competitions but I also have to think of college,” Iggy said. As for girls, they will have to wait. “My father allows me, but my mom does not,” he says with a grin.*AP
