Two separate buildings for ROBINSONS??

http://img247.imageshack.us/img247/5549/robkv6.jpg

I guess this will soon be joined by a high roofing. From the looks of it, I could see that Robinsons Dumaguete will have some kind of a grand lobby similar to that of a five star hotel.

Uhmm, I forgot, where again is Cafe Medina?

Just watched the Blue Eagles played against the RTU, and with Coach Norman Black at the helm, the latter was surely routed. Burke and the other Blue Eagles athletes hanged out at the LLMSC lobby afterwards and they happened to have an audience with Silliman athletes at that location.

Czech ambassador to visit Dumaguete, Dapitan

MANILA, Philippines — Czech Republic ambassador Jaroslav Ludva will visit Dumaguete City on Nov. 3 as guest of honor at a special academic convocation of the Silliman University, an online news site reported.

Visayan Daily Star (www.visayandailystar.com) reported that Ludva will speak on the friendship between national hero Jose Rizal and Prague-born Dr. Ferdinand Blumentritt.

Ludva gained national prominence in 2006 when he unveiled his Czech translation of "Mi Ultimo Adios," written by Rizal hours before his execution in December 1896, on a marker at Fort Santiago in Intramuros.

He recently launched a volume of poems titled "Doce Poemas de las Islas Filipinas" which also pays tribute to Philippine history and Spanish colonial architecture, and the Filipino people, and on the life of Rizal and his friendship with Blumentritt.

The Knights of Rizal invited him to be area commander in the Czech Republic.

Ludva vigorously promotes cultural and historical activities between the sister cities of Litomerice in the Czech Republic where Blumentritt grew up and where Rizal frequented, and Calamba in Laguna where Rizal was born.

Litomerice and Calamba signed a sister city agreement in 1974.

The report said it took Ludva only two days to translate Rizal's masterpiece from Spanish, but it took him two years and several trips to Intramuros, San Agustin Church, Calamba, Vigan, Dapitan, the Cordilleras and Batanes to write the book "Doce Poemas."

A Filipino translation of Doce Poemas will be worked on later this year with his Filipino friends in the academe. It will not be translated to English, however.

Ludva will also meet with Dumaguete Mayor Agustin Perdices and other city officials, and the members of the Knights of Rizal.

He will later proceed to Dapitan in Zamboanga del Norte, where Rizal was exiled in 1892. Before Rizal left for Dapitan then, he made a stopover in Dumaguete

^^

WOW! Great shots, @Miguel.

I say, this year's Pyrotechnic Competition was good, but not as good as in the previous ones where the WOW factor is really there. Where everybody could not resist but to say those uncontrollable OHHH, AHHH, WOOOW just like a child.

This year, i don't know why but there are only few moments where i had to say those AHHH, OHHH, WOOOW like a child. Maybe i just got used to it or maybe i just expected too much. There were less of the hearts, the circles, the flowers and the big bangs this year. Crisis na gyud. Tipid na ang mga competitors and each of them had to only produce a 7-10 minute show unlike in the past years. But nevertheless, it was worth being in the crowd, worth waiting, and worth the money i had to spend for my stay at Cafe Medina, where i had to buy something or else get butt-kicked out of the place. The cafe offered a spectactular view. Although, i missed to see on how the fireworks looked as it reflected in the boulevard waters.

It's something everyone in the city and province look forward to every year. I heard through the radio this morning that there were about 30,000 per night of local audience who graced the event and that is excluding the tourists, local and international. Now I am not really surprised about that. The whole Rizal Boulevard stretch was filled with people, young and old, ugly and beautiful.. hehe.

By the way, who won???? If the two Chinese exhibitions were part of the competition, then i am more than a hundred percent sure that both will win!! Bulacan was good, too.

Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental has the potential to become the next fashion capital of the Philippines.

There is a fashion show held practically every week in one of its many trendy bars and venues.

http://img372.imageshack.us/img372/1593/010vo1.jpg
Because of its international student population, due mainly to the presence of Silliman University, Dumaguete has a steady pool of models as well as the ever presence of make up artists and local talent managers.

This week, Foundation University in Dumaguete is host to the 13th University Games (Unigames)

13th PHILIPPINE UNIVERSITY GAMES
Dumaguete City, Philippines
October 24 – 30, 2008

This year’s UNIGAMES has many features that has never happened to any other UNIGAMES in the past.

• The Philippine Sports Commission has made 1.5 Million in funds available for this year's UNIGAMES. The first time PSC has ever made a cash allocation for such event.

• Registration is done through the 100% “paperless” system. Thanks to FU’s ENTHEOS IT System Company that designed the database that manages information about the school-participants, the athletes, the events, etc. With the technology, any coach can use it for quick athlete-screening purposes, file complaints, games updates, etc.

• The distribution of ATM-style identification cards to all athletes and coaches, with an exclusive blue UNIGAMES lanyard. A complete overhaul from the paper IDs in previous UNIGAMES events.

• Multiple sporting venues all over the second district of the province. Selected venues outside Dumaguete City include Tanjay City Sports Stadium and Valencia Gymnasium. Other venues: Macias Sports Complex, Perdices Stadium, Perdices Stadium Sand Courts for beach volleyball, The Court Sports Club, Dumaguete City Gymnasium, Foundation University Sofia Soller Sinco Hall, Silliman University Gymnasium, Negros Oriental State University Cultural Center, Praxivilla Tennis Courts, Silliman University Tennis Courts, Colegio de Santa Catalina Gymnasium, LG Teves Aqua Center, and Foundation University IYS Peace Gymnasium. The venues are all scattered across the city so the athletes get to have a free tour around the city. Vehicular transportation is free, of course.

• Upgrade of the Perdices Stadium courtesy of FU.

• The addition of Beach Volleyball in the list of games.

• The addition of the demonstration sport Dodgeball. Mark Nelson and Rovilson Fernandez came just to open the sporting event. Participating universities of the demo sport include Adamson University, Ateneo de Manila University, and Far Eastern University.

• Live video coverage shown through televisions placed on strategic locations for public viewing. Featured videos can be seen at www.unigames.org

• UNIGAMES Sports Fashion show featuring local models from around the four universities of the city and from Cebu. (Pictures posted above by Ritchie.)

• UNIGAMES Fun Night. Another night of fun filled with bands, games, and other surprises.

• UNIGAMES athletes get special freebies and 10% discount in all NIKE and ADIDAS merchandise and apparells. Exclusive only in NIKE COURT boutique and ADIDAS boutique at Lee Super Plaza.

Instead of mindless cheerleading about how great Dumaguete is, how advanced, how forward thinking; stop a minute and ask yourself what has made Dumaguete attractive to tourists, residents, and retirees up to this point? Dumaguete has an ugly secret which needs to be addressed... unbrideled violent crime.

No amount of overzealous enthusiasm will fix the problem, lets work on the infrastructure first, crime and corrupt local politics, then see what can make Dumaguuete stand above the rest, not sink to the depths.

Let's be honest.

I don't think there is dishonesty on featuring the events that had really happened nor it is mindless to appreciate what needs to be appreciated. I don't think also that it is a secret on the crimes in the city when most of the province knew and are talking about it. Celebrations and merriments should not be a hostage to the evil minded people as much as like when people got paranoid and don't want to leave their homes after the 9/11 attack. Enjoy life and dealt each situation separately.

Now what about the crimes, though it is relatively low compare to other cities but it is alarming when the statistics go up and when one becomes a victim. Though I don't think this is the right venue to effectively resolve this as all we can do is chit chat about it, the best outcome might be for this is to generate ideas on how to overcome it but it would be all useless unless acted upon. Gripes won't be of help unless solutions be suggested and implemented. It would be best to dealt this directly to the authorities.

I believe that crimes had flourish because people lose their moral foundation. For instance, when the incumbent mayor of Sibulan had allowed bars to flourish near airport area, statistics on sexually transmitted diseases increases. That's just one side of the story, immorality sets in. It is easy for people to lose their values, the attitude changes and outlook on whats right and wrong blurred through repeated offense, thus people became numb and commiting acts became a routine leading to crimes without conscience and feeling of guilt. I maybe philosophical but that's how I see things interrelated when people lose their values. I would certainly not vote on that mayor.

So McDo has finally decided to venture with the 24-hour service?

With most fastfood outlets here serving 24/7 (Jollibee-Perdices, Jollibee-North Road, Chowking, Dunkin Donuts-Perdices, Qyosko, etc...) and others going beyond 12 midnight (Shakey's, Noriter, Cafe Anonio, etc...), I think McDo finally realized the potential of doubling their revenues by taking full advantage with the increasing night-owl population here.

They wont regret it. Customer crowd is always present in any 24-hour service restaurants, food chains, and cafes here.

Tourism, ICT spur Central Visayas’s Economy (http://businessmirror.com.ph/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=1091:tourism-ict-spur-central-visayass-economy&catid=33:economy)
Written by Willy Rodolfo III / Reporter
Monday, 27 October 2008 22:58

TOURISM and information-communication technology (ICT) sectors continue to lead the way in boosting Central Visayas’s economy even as construction, fishing and shipping slipped and inflation soared in the first half of 2008.

Exports also posted a huge 57.8- percent increase in April to June 2008, compared with the same period in 2007, hitting the $1.547-billion mark despite the strong peso dampening the performance of small export furniture companies.

The regional economic situationer report indicated that ICT and ICT-enabled sectors have continued to grow as evidenced by the increase in employment generated by the two sectors.

According to the report, Asiatown IT Park in Cebu City alone currently employs an estimated 12,755 as of the first three months of 2008, significantly up from the 11,637 figure as of year-end 2007.

The report also identified small- and medium-scale software companies which have started to thrive in Metro Cebu as the demand for highly skilled programmers and engineers continues to increase.

“The ICT industry remained to be a formidable economic driver of Central Visayas. It continued to draw in investors and create jobs,” the report indicated.

Information technology (IT) and electronics led the region’s exports, with the port of Cebu leading with a 76-percent increase in export values for $1.252 billion.

Tourism also continued to perform remarkably well, with the number of foreign tourists increasing by 13.8 percent compared with the same period in 2007 and domestic tourists increasing by 11 percent despite the worsening global economic situation.

Some 356,947 local tourists and 177,144 foreign travelers arrived in the region between April and June as the region hit the 1-million-arrivals mark in the first six months of the year.

Cebu continued to lead the region with 401,636 combined arrivals, or 812,233 in the first six months of the year.

“Although the region was able to achieve a double-digit growth in visitor arrivals in second quarter 2008, it failed to surpass or even match the 16.5-percent growth recorded in the same period of 2007,” the report said.

“This could be a result of the decision of some travelers to postpone trips until the global economic situation improves.”

Negros Oriental posted the highest growth in terms of arrivals with 25.1 percent in the second quarter of 2008 compared with the same period in 2007.

The increase was significantly higher than its 10.7-percent growth over the same period in 2007.

Bohol also posted promising numbers with a 14.7-percent increase in its arrivals.

“Improved performance of the province’s tourism industry during the period could be attributed to, among others, the continued promotion of Bohol to its target market and the collaboration between government and private sector in the implementation of tourism laws and policies,” the report said.

Koreans remain to be the top foreign visitors to Central Visayas, but their share of the pie shrank from 34 percent to 28 percent.

The number of Taiwanese tourists increased by 240 percent in the first half of 2008.

Construction led the slowdown in Central Visayas amid the surging prices of steel and cement, although several international investors are still pushing with their plans to invest in hotels, residences and retirement facilities in the region.

Prices of steel went up by 80 percent in a span of four to six months, while cement prices rose by 18 percent.

“Most of the huge construction projects that were realized in the region were for tourism facilities and office spaces,” the report added.

Although flights posted strong growth by up to 15,953 flights, including close to 2,000 international flights from the region, ship calls dipped compared with 2007 levels.

“Shipping activities in the region generally dropped from years-ago level due to the high cost of fuel which prompted shipping companies to increase fare rates and freight charges,” the report said.

There were a total of 31,992 ship calls in the region in the second three months of 2008, 205 of which were from foreign vessels.

“Foreign ship calls and cargo increased due to the increase in importation or rice and steel products. This was because of the speculation that prices of steel would continue to go up along with the rising demand in China,” the report said.

Inflation rates in the region hit 11.1 percent, higher than the national average of 9.7 percent led by increased in the food as well as the fuel, light and water group.

San Beda College of Manila and the University of St. La Salle of Bacolod shared victories in the finals of the 13th UniGames in the men’s football and women’s volleyball, respectively, and participated by over 25 colleges and universities from all over the country.

San Beda College whipped West Negros University (WNU) with a score of 1-0 during their encounter in the championship match in mens football division of the 13th UNIGAMES Thursday afternoon, October 30, 2008 at Perdices Coliseum.

SAN BEDA rejoices as they heared the last whistle of the referee that declares the end of the game between West Negros University. They poured water to their coach and their coordinator Father Lucas of San Beda College showing their triumph of winning.

At the start of the game, both teams are too hot that the referee announces yellow card at both team at the same time. But luckily for SAN BEDA, they made the first goal by Dave Villom. According to coach Aries Caslib of San Beda College,”I am not expecting to win this game since West Negros University is a stronger team to beat.” From their last play on the UNIGAMES 2004, they were the champion, and now, they are so lucky to win again for their come back since they stopped from 2005 up to 2007. Coach Aries added that his players really worked hard and followed their instructions thats why they won the game.

It was indeed a very ferocious fight between the two opposing teams notwithstanding the bad condition of the field.

Dumaguete City maintains child-friendly recognition
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

Dumaguete City has maintained its award for being a child-friendly city throughout Region 7 or Central Visayas.

City social welfare officer Marina Mendoza and members of the city council for the protection of children will receive the regional Presidential Award for Child-Friendly City on Thursday during the 18th regional children’s contest at SM entertainment plaza in Cebu City.

As a regional winner, Dumaguete will receive a child-friendly seal and cash prize of P50,000, as well as a plaque of appreciation, being a regional finalist.

This is the fourth time that the city had been adjudged as a regional winner. It first received the award in 2000 and then in 2005, 2006, and 2007.

For the first to third class municipalities, Tubigon in Bohol was the regional winner and for the fourth to sixth class municipalities, the regional winner was Pilar, Cebu.

Meanwhile, Olivier Bulfa, 10, of Barangay Banilad, Dumaguete and a Grade 5 pupil at Hermenigilda Gloria Elementary School in Banilad was also the regional winner in the search for local Junior Ambassador. He will receive his award on Nov. 6 in Cebu.

The search aims to increase awareness and to support the Bright Child program of the government.

On the other hand, three barangays in Dumaguete were awarded for having the most functional barangay council for the protection of children.

These are barangays Cadawinonan, Poblacion 8 and Bajumpandan. They were given plaques of appreciation and P5,000 in cash during the Children’s Congress Friday in Dumaguete.*JG

CUTE!... :)

Until now wa pako ka eat sa Gabby's Bistro..:(
Although, my friends and I tried but when we saw the prices, it wasnt really in tune with our budget that time so we had to transfer to Island Cafe, just meters away from the place.. Makaulaw jud sa waiter..

But we never went out the place "empty-handed." We were able to get around the spanish-inspired resto and they have some pretty nifty designs; when you go to their bathroom, you’d be greeted by paintings of famous celebrities in its walls. The place is comfortable and creative and just full of life. Inside you’d be welcomed a number of paintings and details that have been decorated to make the restaurant feel like a modern-day diner.

Anyway, they have this concept of providing you a big blank sheet of paper after ordering your food so that you can be busy while you wait. They have some crayons for you to just do whatever you want.. Aint that fun???

============

This film, having Dumaguete as it's main setting, although, not the first time, will surely be something special and something to look forward to. For one thing, it is sponsored by the Cinemalaya Foundation and the NCCA (Both will not just sponsor any Independent movie unless it's going to be a really good one) which will have high possibilities that this film will get to join in international film festivals. It will be a big exposure for Dumaguete, for sure, and hopefully, soon, Dumaguete will not be only known for it's academic industry, but also get head-to-head with other places in the film industry. Dumaguete was specially chosen by the director with influence from Chin-Chin Gutierrez who just love Dumaguete so much and has just recently found her second home here.

Back in 2006, Dumaguete (specificaly Silliman U) starred in Star Cinema's Closer to You. The scenes were nice but it was only Dumaguete in wallpaper. That was it.

I just hope and pray that Dumaguete will be well presented in this film just like how other movie-makers presented other places such as Donsol (in DONSOL), Bohol (in PANAGHOY SA SUBA), Negros Occidental (in ORO PLATA MATA), Batanes (in BATANES), and so on........

God Bless to the crew behind the film! Post-production is on-going.

DUMAGUETE BAR / RESTAURANT / CLUB GUIDE:
(Partial List from www.dogstarbeach.com -- another website on Dumaguete made by British Expats)

Mamia's Portugese Bar and Restaurant
Rizal Boulevard (Monday to Sunday, 11am to 12am)
By no means fine dining, however, we can almost guarantee that the steak will make your mouth water and the service is pretty quick. A meal for two might set you back around £10 including drinks and you'll be able to people watch from the outside patio as life goes by on the boulevard. The restaurant is fully aircon with a well-stocked wine list or you can grab yourself a short at the bar and chat over a few drinks - gentle background music never hampers good conversation between friends. Great for a formal celebration or a romantic occasion - dress up and make a night of it.
Expect to pay around £5pp

Mike's Adventure Dive Waterfront Cafe
Rizal Boulevard (Monday to Saturday, 7am to 10pm)
Great for divers who want to combine a shopping jaunt with a light snack, but friends of the finned are also welcome. Three tables are located outside the shop front if you want to take it easy. Big comfy couches, free WiFi connection and book exchange - this dive fraternity has more than your buy or rent dive gear in store. Worth a few visits - kick back and relax in Negros Bohemia.
Expect to pay around £3pp

Anabelle Jean's
Rizal Boulevard (Monday to Saturday, 9am to 1am; Sunday, 4pm to 12am)
Cheap eats and snacks that are served nice and quick. Eat inside or out, but you’ll have to ditch the idea of aircon in this open front restaurant. Great mushrooms in breadcrumbs and fries, but stay clear of the soup as it reminds us of the watery canned version.
Expect to pay around £5pp

Chicco's Swiss Restaurant at Why Not (Music Box)
Rizal Boulevard (Monday to Saturday, 6am to 2am; Sunday, 6am to 12am) A restobar, salad bar and coffee shop all rolled into one, Chicco serves a wide variety of Filipino and international dishes and is the only dining place in the city that serves the famous Fondue. Yes the Swiss were here first, but they do know their deli. Fresh hams and pastrami, gorgeous mouth watering cheese and ham toasties and onion soup drizzled in mozzarella that is definitely not for the fainthearted.
Expect to pay around £5pp

Lab-As Seafood
North end of the Rizal Boulevard (Monday to Sunday, 10am to 10pm) All the fish you can eat and why not - after all you're in Negros! Choose your victim form the tank if it's lobster or crab that takes your fancy, or indulge in some blue Marlin, a local delicacy that is easy on the palette. Lab-As is highly recommended in travel books as the best seafood restaurant in the city - the reviews are not wrong and it is reasonably priced as well. The restaurant is flanked by "Su-to-kil" kiosk and Hayahay Bar. Su-to-kil serves grilled food, ideal as appetizers, while Hayahay is best reserved for after dinner drinks and entertainment. This makes Lab-As a perfect choice for entrees. It also has a piano bar where a pianist plays soothing music from 7pm to 9pm. The subdued lighting contributes to the relaxing ambiance of the place. Great baked oysters and grilled squid.
Expect to pay around £10pp

Chin Loong Chinese Restaurant
Rizal Boulevard (Monday to Sunday, 8am to 11pm) As the name implies, Chin Loong serves Chinese dishes and dimsum, which makes it a popular restaurant among both the locals and visitors to the city. It is advisable to be there before 7pm to be assured of seats as it can get crowded. If you like your vegetables "half" cooked and crunchy then you'll definitely be happy here. Expect to pay under £10 on a two-course meal for two including drinks.
Expect to pay around £5pp

Cafe Memento
North end of Rizal Boulevard (Monday to Saturday, 9am to 11pm; Sunday, 3pm to 11pm) If you crave coffee and Mexican treats this is the place to be. Chill out with friends and enjoy the music, or just be by yourself and renew your spirit in solitude. Couples, groups of friends, and even aged, motorcycle-riding men come here to relax and savor the food and the invigorating ambience. Beer is also served, so if it's beer you want, it's beer you'll get. Definitely more pricey than most but as a first floor restaurant - you can savour the fresh clean air and the silence even in the heart of the city. The beef burrito is definitely worth a second visit as it's filled to the brim with juicy beef, tomatoes, cheese and a special dressing that leaves a yummy aftertaste. The quesadillas are also nicely done, and better than those from the Greenwich Pizza store. A filling treat of burritos, quesadillas and cold coffee will only set you back around 200 pesos.
Expect to pay around £2pp

Persian Palate
Rizal Boulevard (Monday to Sunday, 11am to 11pm)
Great food at ridiculously low prices - can be quite spicy - so if you're not a fan, best to stick with the hummus which is more-ish. Great Calamansi juice for those who have a sweet tooth. Two can eat out for less than £5. No smoking, but once you start eating you'll forget that cigarettes even existed along with alcohol - as it's not sold here. The restaurant interior is not the most cozy, but we love the food in here, especially just ordering a bunch of small dishes and having a pick 'n mix evening.
Expect to pay around £3pp

Hayahay Treehouse Bar and Restaurant
North end of Rizal Boulevard, Silliman Avenue (Monday to Sunday, 10am to 12am)
Want to mix your culinary delights with some great live music? Be warned, the bands can be loud, but this is local music that shouldn't be missed. Fancy eating Italian? Hayahay also offers the ultimate in pizzas. Take a seat atop the tree house and watch out over the moonlit bay - pizza pretty fantabulous and the view - priceless. With a 15-seat capacity and its own bar, each tree house is perfect for a small group of friends. On clear nights, one can see the distant lights of Cebu Island or the blinking gas lanterns of local fishermen's boats. Take some mozzie spray for this one, as it's all outside eating. The baked Talaba (Oyster) for 120 pesos is a must-try. The beer-prices are around 30 pesos and pizza is in the range of 180 - 350 pesos. All the fish and seafood is fresh and you can choose your crabs and lobster from the tank. As far as music goes - Wednesday is the perfect Rastafarian outing with live bands including the local reggae heroes ENCHI; Thursday is acoustic night; and on Friday you can check out some smooth jazzy pop, with louder tunes pumped out on Saturday, at ROCK night.
Expect to pay around £8pp

Coco Amigos Mexican Bar and Restaurant
Rizal Boulevard (Monday to Sunday, 6:30am to 2am)
Very friendly bar with a genuine Mexican flair! - from the façade right down to the interiors and furniture. Expect, rich and colorful details, quirky Aztec figures painted on the walls, Mexican sombreros, and festive South American music. The restaurant/bar serves authentic cuisine and has an ample supply of Tequila. If you feel like looking out into the horizon or the boulevard strip, you can choose to be seated at their front patio under huge white umbrellas. Meals are OK, but it depends what you order. Not one for pizza, but they do serve great salads, pasta and fish. Evening entertainment is varied with everything from John MaClaine to Celine Dione look-alikes. It tends to be background music, but they will occasionally have a singer on a stage at the front of the venue - this can be loud. No aircon - open front bar and restaurant. Also a great place to chill with a good book during the day. You can catch a meal for two for under £10 including drinks.
Expect to pay around £5pp

Sans Rival Cakes & Pastries
Rizal Boulevard (Monday to Saturday, 9am to 7pm; Sunday, 9am to 2pm) A trip to Dumaguete is not complete if you leave without sampling the popular Sylvannas from Sans Rival. Aptly named, the pastry shop also sells a host of other cakes, pastries and cookies. The Sylvannas come in a box of 10 and that will set you back 90 pesos, while Sans Rival is sold as a loaf that costs 255 pesos. Both are wrapped in foil doubled with Kraft paper to maintain their freshness. If you want to take them back home, inform the storekeeper and they will offer you chilled stock that could last for 4 hours without melting. This dessert themed restaurant will set you back under £5.
Expect to pay around £3pp

Howyang Chinese Restaurant
Perdices Street (Monday to Sunday 930am to 830pm)
Dimsum and dumplings take center stage in this delightful Chinese restaurant, featuring sumptuous shrimp balls, spring rolls and cabbage pouch-all at very low prices. The bright and colourful interiors are a refreshing change from the tacky interior of a usual Chinese restaurant, but the food served here is as close as you can get to Shanghai or Beijing. House specialties range from Crab Fuyong and Crispy Pata to Kinilaw and the intriguingly named Rainbow Fish. Don't miss out on the chicken feet dimsum if you're feeling extra adventurous!
Expect to pay around £3pp

Barefoot Bistro
EJ Blanco Drive (Monday to Sunday, 10am to 3am)
Adjacent to El Camino Bar is the Barefoot Bistro, an outdoor informal bar and restaurant where many love to hang out because of its casual and rugged flair - no dress codes here. It has a serviceable bar and a menu of popular outdoor dishes like the grilled pork belly and sisig. One can play billiards or throw some darts, catch a couple of TV shows near the bar while sipping ice cold beer, or simply lounge around with friends in one of the pretty native huts. Tends to be a haven for the mozzies, but a really chilled place. El Camino, which is the nearest you'll get to house and techno - it's generally a laidback crowd and the music definitely hits a few Euphoric nerves.
Expect to pay around £5pp

Club El Camino Blanco
EJ Blanco Drive (Monday to Sunday, 10am to 3am)
A bar, restaurant and dance club rolled into one, El Camino is an ever popular night destination, where the young (or feeling young) and the trendy converge. Constantly booming with irresistible dance music, thanks to the in house DJ, El Camino is definitely a must go for all party lovers. It has a well stocked bar, state of the art sound system and lighting, is fully air conditioned and serves great Filipino food such as crispy pata and beef tapa. On some occasions, it features live bands and fashion shows.

Why Not Music Box
Rizal Boulevard (Monday to Saturday, 9pm to 3am; Sunday, 9pm to 2am) If you really want to let your hair down and you don't mind a more eclectic mix of musical genres then this is the ultimate party venue. You can always try your hand at pool, grab a bite to eat or simply enjoy the fun all night long on the dance floor. A sought-after-place for young blooded professionals, tourists and students - a rather mixed bag covering all walks of life. No shorts or sandals.
Expect to pay around £10pp

Payag Sa Likod
North Road (Monday to Saturday, 9pm to 3am; Sunday, 9pm to 2am)
Described as the beach inside the city, this is a place where the 20 or 30 something crowd hangout. Think sands of Boracay (minus the crowds) at night with mats and pillows laid out on the sand and tables and chairs made of bamboo. Recommendations are the sisig and spicy gambas. "Payag" means shack in English, but this Payag is one great place to unwind and enjoy food, drinks and great music. They also have a live band playing and you can even join in the Filipino tradition of belting out a song - the band backing you up with a guitar and a beatbox. Having Zen like native appeal you can share one of the several nooks, cosy up to big throw pillows and look at the stars...how romantic....they've even got candles spread around as well! Dress is eclectic from formal to casual to beach wear.

Happy Fred's
Rizal Boulevard (Monday to Sunday, 9am to 4am)
Fancy a beer or if you're feeling lucky perhaps you're up for the seven-shooter challenge. Terry the owner is always catching up on the football - so there's a good chance you'll be able to pack in a game before the holiday is over. The bar also has bikes for hire if you need to get around on two wheels and a WiFi connection if you want to catch up or download in the heart of the city. Fred's has a sister establishment near the airport so if you're flying with Philippine Airlines and it's a late arrival - you can always grab a sneaky beer before heading off to your next destination. They will also do a mighty tasty full English breakfast if you are looking to travel in the early hours.

Why Not Music Box
Rizal Boulevard (Monday to Sunday, 7pm to 3am)
Why Not has a Karaoke Bar, and by the time you leave Negros you'll know that this is a kind of national sport in the Philippines. First they ask you what to sing, then what to drink. Home to professional and amateur singers alike, its wide array of song collections ensures there's a tune for everyone - and believe us it can become addictive especially after a few San Miguels. The Karaoke Bar is also equipped with VIP Rooms for your private singing satisfaction.

22 schools join Square Off's 'Frank-ahan'
abs-cbnNEWS.com (http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/anc/10/28/08/22-schools-join-square-offs-frank-ahan) | 10/28/2008 7:07 PM

Square Off kicks off its latest season with an even wider array of collegiate teams battling it out for the honor of representing their school and the country in the 2009 Asian Universities Debating Championship (AUDC) in Dhaka.

The all-expense paid trip to the AUDC is being sponsored by Sen. Frank Drilon, a well-known advocate of youth empowerment and social justice. Also a prominent lawyer, Sen Drilon threw his support behind the Square Off because "debate espouses the highest ideals of democracy."

Dubbed Frank-ahan: The Drilon Debates, 22 schools from all over the country are participating.

The top contenders in the previous season, like Ateneo de Manila, UP Diliman, De La Salle University, Ateneo De Zamboanga, Silliman University, and Xavier University, are all back.

New challengers include La Salle Bacolod, Ateneo De Naga, UP Iloilo, Mindanao State University-Iligan, and University of San Juan de Recoletos.

In all, 9 participants are from Metro Manila, 3 come from Northern Luzon, while Visayas and Mindanao are sending 5 teams each.

"We took special pains to invite little-known teams from the provinces to give them the kind of national exposure they deserve," says Square Off Moderator and executive producer, Twink Macaraig.

"With such a mix, the audience will be in for more color and quite a few surprises - like last year's unexpected standout performances from Mindanao State University-Marawi, and PMA," she said.

Capitalizing on the diversity of schools represented, Square Off will also feature live shots of viewers in select provinces to capture the excitement of fans cheering on their home teams.

Square Off - Frankahan: The Drilon Debates airs on ABS-CBN News Channel (ANC) Wednesdays at 8pm, with replays at 1pm Thursday, and 2pm Saturday.

Went to Bayawan City last month (just my second time) and got stunned by this structure. At first I thought it was a mall, a really nice mall, but then I realized that it's Bayawan's Bus Terminal. So beautiful, and well landscaped. My dad said it's the biggest in the Region. Is it, Ritch? I think it also has a hotel and convention halls. I just wonder why until now it's still not operational.

I guess it is the best public bus terminal and the largest in the country. I have no figures, though, but people from the Bayawan City Hall even said that the land area of the Bayawan bus terminal is probably one of the largest in Southeast Asia.

DUMAGUETE, the city of crystal clear, blue waters, abundant natural resources and peace loving people welcomed the Vazquez Group represented by Marketing Director of VAZBUILT & VazCom Lillibeth Vazquez Legasto and VazCom Cebu Sales Engr. Mae Empeso. Standing with their #1 dealer and contractor Engr. Stanley Tinio in front of his strategically located office outlet. Together they teamed up to assure homebuyers of quality construction and installation of Tegula Concrete Roof tiles and Vazpave Pavers.

Interested joint venture manufacturing talks with VAZBUILT are now ongoing. Soon VAZBUILT will serve the needs of homebuyers in Dumaguete and the nearby provinces. The ease, speed and practicality of using prefabricated concrete modular housing components to build houses in areas where it is inconvenient and expensive to ship raw materials such as sand, cement, steel bars to nearby islands will now be a welcome strategy to contractors and builders.

There is a place I long to go Down ‘neath Visayan Skies
Moonlight is calling to
A startlit Paradise

Down by the sea she’s calling me
Sighing all night and day
Sweetheart, I’ll be coming to
A place I long to go

Dumaguete, Dumaguete
There’s one girl who stole my hear away
Dumaguete, please keep her for me
I’ll be coming back someday

‘Neath the old Acacia tree
Is our rendezvous
She whispered softly to me
“Darling I love you”

Dumaguete, Dumaguete
Do you hear me calling you

From Buglas News Central, September 28-October 4, 2008-source: Metro Post

Bayawan City Mayor German Sarana said travel time between Bayawan and Bacolod will soon be shortened to two hours and 45 minutes with the improvement of the Bayawan-Kabankalan road.

Sarana told a forum organized by the College of Business Administration that they are negotiating for a P300 million loan to cement 22 kilometers of road that will link both cities.

In that forum, the mayor shared his city’s programs that propelled Bayawan to become one of the country’s most competitive cities.

Sarana said this existing road, once cemented, will enhance Negros island’s bid to be the Organic Food Basket of Asia. The concreting of this road, which is 20 meters wide, will start from barangay Kalumboyan, Sarna said.

Cebu Pacific flew the Vazquez Group’s Marketing Director Lillibeth V.Legasto, Sales Manager Elsie Miranda and Head designer Arch. Ferdie Patawaran to the charming city of Dumaguete last July 20,2007. To the delight of the passengers, the flight was smooth and it arrived 15 minutes before schedule.

http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/8675/070801traveldumaguete0cv5.jpg

Engr. Stanley Tinio, A-1 Dealer of the Vazquez Group (VAZBUILT, Vazquez Commodities) gathered a group of 70 guests composed of engineers from PICE, architects, major contractors, and hardware owners to attend the special product presentation on the different product lines of the Vazquez Group: Tegula roof tiles, Vazpavers, Vazcrete fences and VAZBUILT prefabricated homes. The venue was set in a most scenic and strategic location by the main baywalk boulevard of Dumaguete, the Bethel Hotel.

The hotel is spacious, impeccably clean, and the staff hospitable and very friendly. A delicious, generous serving of viands filled the tummies of the guest and the rich and serious exchange of product information filled their minds with new construction trends that can be applied in their growing town.

http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/6805/070801traveldumaguete1iq0.jpg

After a hard days work, the next day, Engr. Stanley treated the us to an unforgettable touristic adventure. First stop was a trip to the Casaroro Falls. To health buffs and physically fit nature-loving enthusiast, the long, winding up and down trek was worth it! We lost 5 lbs.! Clean, pure oxygen will feel your healthy lungs, an assortment of rainbow-colored butterflies will make you glee like a little child chasing them towards the majestic falls. The larger than life falls will make you marvel at God’s wonderful creation. The gentle breeze will blow a spray of the cold water coming from the falls to refresh your tired body from that long walk.

The tiring adventure made the group build up a giant’s appetite! Next stop was Jo’s Chicken. The grilled chicken is one of the best we have ever tasted in the country, the banana flower dish soaked in native vinegar, onions, ginger and fresh coconut cream gata was a winner! Nami ka ayo! We gained 5 lbs. back! The restaurant’s local architecture was so creatively designed. The benches and tables were a semblance of colorful Vintas. The huts were chicken dish again.

http://img205.imageshack.us/img205/395/070801traveldumaguete2po3.jpg

An entirely different adventure was waiting for us at the Balingsasayao Twin Lakes perched on a thickly, forested mountain. A shorter winding trek this time led us to a crystal clear lake. The friendly boatman rowed us around the wide, emerald shimmering lake. We admired God’s work of art! In quiet awe we listened to the symphony of a variety of birds singing pleasant melodies. Bright blue and green feathered birds flew leisurely, entertaining us to our heart’s desire. As we docked by the edge of the first lake, slowly we made our way through the trees up the mountain to view the 2nd lake at the other side of the mountain. Another unexpected but welcome treat to feast our eyes! Nindot ka ayo!

The trip to Dumaguete turned out to be both a fulfilling business and touristic trip. We encourage our kababayans to discover our beautiful country, filled with business opportunities as well as awesome, natural tourist spots and friendly, hospitable people!

^I guess almost the same as last year. No schedules on the web, only on TV. I'll try to take hold of this year's Dumaguete Fiesta schedule. Meanwhile, we have a new thread (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?p=27709952#post27709952).

But Negros is not only home, to great looking guys. The girls are equally gorgeous.

Why Not Music Box KTV Bar
Rizal Boulevard (Monday to Sunday, 7pm to 3am)
Why Not has a Karaoke Bar, and by the time you leave Negros you'll know that this is a kind of national sport in the Philippines. First they ask you what to sing, then what to drink. Home to professional and amateur singers alike, its wide array of song collections ensures there's a tune for everyone - and believe us it can become addictive especially after a few San Miguels. The Karaoke Bar is also equipped with VIP Rooms for your private singing satisfaction.

GABBY'S BISTRO
Dumaguete City

This quircky and fun spanish-inspired resto has some pretty nifty designs; when you go to their bathroom, you’d be greeted by paintings of famous celebrities in its walls.

Why is Ka-bayo not in the list ?

Jo's by the sea and the original resto at the city proper is a disappointment hygiene wise. At the city proper resto there are lots of small roaches. the one time I went to jo's at the sea someone took a dump at the urinal. ugh !

I also don't see in the list the quaint italian resto where the italian owner is also the chef. might have closed :(

panda's fried ice cream is too oily.

Qyosko has good lomi and nilagang baka.

hayahay has excellent pizza.

the glazed donuts at Dunkins is great.

^^ You mean Kabayo-an? It's more of the Carinderia type i guess thats why its not included. But they have great fiesta-style food preparations. They serve Horse meat (hence the name Kabayo-an) every Sundays. They also serve this bizzare preparation of pork brain. A best-seller!

Jo's by the sea and the original resto at the city proper is a disappointment hygiene wise. At the city proper resto there are lots of small roaches. the one time I went to jo's at the sea someone took a dump at the urinal. ugh !

Oh yeah???? Whoa... :ohno::ohno:

Sometimes, their chicken is not cooked well, too. Another disappointment. That's why when it comes to chicken inasal, i go for La Cavitena or at City Burger. Way better. I only go for Jo's if im craving for their Pansit Macau.

I also don't see in the list the quaint italian resto where the italian owner is also the chef. might have closed :(

You mean ITALIA? Its still there. They now serve pizzas cooked over their traditional earthen-organic ovens. A must try!!

panda's fried ice cream is too oily.

I agree.. But if you just tell them to lessen the oil, then they will do it. Ganyan lang talaga kasi ang nature ng fried ice cream. It's deep fried. That's why it can get too oily sometimes.

Qyosko has good lomi and nilagang baka.

And i love their buttered chicken!

hayahay has excellent pizza.

I love their four seasons plus their super hot sauce! Perfect combination!1

the glazed donuts at Dunkins is great.

Oh yeah? Im gna try.

What is the per capita ratio of the eating establishments in Dumaguete compared to other Philippine cities (outside of Metro Manila)? I'm guessing all of them are privately owned and operated eateries; are there any of the big local/foreign corporate restuarants as well?

Looks like he redid the ID of his resto. It's not at Rizal Ave though, it's at a side street near rizal ave.

the chef/owner did mention building a wood burning pizza oven at the back. he was complaining to me then about his carpenter, ha,ha.

I hope he's doing better businesswise now. His prices are reasonable compared to manila italian restos (800-1000/head, wine included), but are quite steep for dumaguetenons.

^^ Id say, for a small city, Dumaguete definitely has a LOT of restaurants of varied international themes and cuisines. Every corner, you'd see a restaurant / cafe / bar. The most booming business here is the food business and it's because almost a third of the population are students. They can become hungry most of the time. I know. Coz I do! hehe. Another thing is that there is a sizable expat community here. You can see them everywhere. International student population is rising high especially that all the universities here accept them and has foreign exchange student programs. Plus, backpackers are also seen everyday in troops, in couples or just in singles and they could be walking around hungry. The “hungry” population here is not just anyone who can become pleased with anything un-extraordinary.

Putting up food business here will never go backrupt unless it is too expensive or too boring (the food and place). Because through the years, Dumaguete people has developed a discriminating taste. If its not good, then its dumped. It not just about place's decorations or theme, the food should also be good - the prices as well. If you dare open, be warned, your resto’s life is always coming near to an end unless you exhaust all your creative skills and get innovative. Competition is tough. Every now and then, you’d see a lot of food places opening yet at the same time, a lot are also closing down. Those that survive are those that come up with something a discriminating taste will love and most especially patronize so that they keep on coming back. Even some of simplest carinderias here are sprucing up their places and offering food that will click to the population just to stay at the surface.

Having your place wifi-connected is a bonus. Everyone here just loves to get connected and the tendency is that they'd stay longer and spend more. Most restaurants and cafes here are wifi hotspots.

The food business here are mostly locally owned. But some others are also owned by foreign expats, chefs, divers, and even just Korean students! Korean food joints are also booming here. But their food can get boring, too. Phew.

So with that, you can have really good food here - gourmet, homemade, bizarre, streetfood or whatever at a cheaper price.

Trip nga namin with my friends ngayon to try ALL the restaurants here. Parang mag resto-hopping or café-hoping coz even if we are from here, 60-70% pa lang na try namin from the total number of good food places here.

And yeah, when you come, you'll never get hungry!!

Enjoy your lunch, people!

There are international fastfood chains in the city such as Shakeys, Pizza Hut (closed this time), etc. A sizable number of restaurants are owned by foreigners, many of which can be considered world class.

Sa mga moderators, announce lang po ako para sa mga hindi dumadayo sa Samahan forums, pasensya na po sa abala:

Project: Isang Bayan, Urbanidad! SSC Philippines National T-shirt design contest.

I think its time for the Skyscrapercity Philippines to have our own national t-shirt that would encompass all of the Filipinos of this archipelago, the OFWs, the immigrants, Fil-Ams and those who wish to be part of the Samahan of Skyscrapercity Pilipinas forumers (interested foreigners who want to have also their shirt) showcasing the artistry of the Filipinos in graphic t-shirt design.

Theme: Isang Bayan, Urbanidad!– Encompassing all of the aspects of urbanity of the Philippine cities and localities, as one nation in one t-shirt design. Being Filipino both here and abroad aiming for progress for the motherland.

Colour of Background:The design should be well incorporated in a black t-shirt.

The T-shirt Design
The proposal of the t-shirt design is open to all SSC Philippines forumers. The deadline for passing the t-shirt print design would be on December 05 2008. Have your t-shirt design posted in this thread link at the Samahan Forums entitled: Skyscrapercity Philippines/Pilipinas T-shirt Design Contest. (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=742588)

You may submit print designs either for one side (front or back only) or for two sides (front AND back). Each forumer is entitled to submit a maximum of three designs.

For direct access to the thread, log on to this webpage:
http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=742588

By mid-January to February, we would have our t-shirts available!

To vote, just log on to this webpage to chose the preferred design starting December 6 2008: http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=742588

T-shirt costs...
The t-shirt would cost approximately from PhP150 to PhP500...but I hope we could find an affordable yet quality t-shirt printers. There may be an additional shipping cost for those living outside Manila.

Another proposal is to have contact persons in cities outside of Metro Manila. We will be sending the said t-shirt design to these contact persons and will be the ones who will print it in their locality.*

*There should be a common consensus regarding the logistics of production and delivery by December 2, 2005.

For the winner of the contest…
He or she is entitled for his/her free t-shirt with his/her design printed on it.

For those interested in having a t-shirt:
Have your name listed in this thread starting December 26 and deadline would be January 15, 2009 for the first batch. There would be an announcement for the second batch of orders after January 15. :)

Streamlining of biz
permits set next year
BY MARICAR ARANAS

Efforts are underway to streamline the processing of business permits and licensing system among local governments in Negros Oriental, in order to encourage small and big businesses to register and raise revenues.
A seminar workshop was conducted for the local government units of Dumaguete City, Tanjay City, Valencia and Bayawan City, and Siquijor and Larena from Siquijor province, recently. It was spearheaded by the Department of Trade and Industry and the German Technical Cooperation.

Regional coordinator Miriam Bacalso of the Small and Medium Enterprises Development for Sustainable Employment Program, said the German government is extending technical assistance to LGUs to come up with a streamlined system for business permits application. This will reduce the waiting time, the number of signatories and without hustle, she said.

She added that, based on experience, the steps can be reduced without necessarily affecting the quality of the product, which is the business permit.

Although most LGUs use the so-called BOSS method or the Business One Stop System, the long line of business permit applicants, especially in the month of January, will also result in delays, so a shorter method will reduce the number of hours in processing the permits, Bacalso added.

With the seminar, Bacalso said, they hope to come up with a prescribed system or model for all the LGUs.

Regulatory division chief Angeline Gonzales of the DTI said that with a streamlined business permit processing, businesses operating underground will be encouraged to register, thus raising revenues for the government.

In this way, employment generation in each LGU will be known, and the operation of all business including the small and medium enterprises will be legitimized, Gonzales said.

Target implementation of the streamlined system is January 2009, the DTI said.*JG

Nice, am now beginning to miss Dumaguete City very much. I'll be in town at the end of the month pa. Nicko, any info on how the Robinsons' tenants' meeting went?

@Habagat: Yes, we will participate but it might take time as I do not have access to my own desktop computer/laptop this time.

Here's a rather late post of last Buglasan's Pyrotechnics Competition (i still have the post-festival hangovers..) But this time, it's from a being-one-with-the-crowd's perspective. Nevertheless, beautiful captures.

Monstrous crowd at Rizal Avenue. An estimated 40,000+ folks gathered to marvel the beauty of money being burned up in the sky..

^^ Although i dont play golf, i usually visit those places, observe some friends play, or just go for a walk or eat in their restaurants. per observation, the most challenging among the three is Pamplona Golf. The most beautful, IMO is Bravo Golf since it overlooks Sibulan-Dumaguete, and the one with most delicious food is Ang Tay!

Dang, the whole perdices street got so busy and thought there was something going on like an accident or something. there i discovered, was a photoshoot of another country's next top model reality tv series. i think it was japanese or chinese version.. there were cameramen, make up artists, photgraphers and of course the gorgeous models posing in the middle of the street of LSP and Goldilocks not minding the buzzing cars, trikes, and motorbikes. it was something like the philippine's next top model final photoshoot before where they had to close a street junction in a busy hongkong thoroughway... wow.. its flattering they chose our place.

The development of this unique falls (quite unique compared to other falls in the country) could jumpstart Bayawan City's bid to become one of the hottest tourism destinations in Negros Island and the Visayas. Its not-so-common rock formation could be a perfect location for film shooting. It has golden sand beaches and it already has the longest boulevard in the Visayas, and one of the best bus terminals in the country. The City is also currently developing other tourism sites within its jurisdiction.

Sandurot festival slated
BY MARICAR ARANAS

The Sandurot Festival Committee yesterday said that it’s all systems go for the Sandurot Festival 2008 Sunday at the City Hall Quadrangle of Dumaguete.

Committee chairperson Glynda Descuatan said the festival will start at 3 p.m. with the “Pasigarbo” or streetdance on selected streets, followed by a “Pasundayag” or showdown at 6 p.m. at the Quadrangle.

The festival adopted a new concept to portray the life and legend of St. Catherine de Alejandria, the patron Saint of Dumaguete. Organizers said there are only five entries this year. These are Poblacion 1, Barangay Calindagan, Poblacion 3, Brgy. Daro and Barangay Mangnao.

Each contingent was given P70,000 as seed money. The champion will receive P30,000 and will represent the City in the next year's Buglasan Festival of Festivals.

The second and third place winners will receive P20,000 and P15,000. All will receive trophies.

Also at stake are minor awards like best in arch, best in choreography, best in streetdancing, best pair or Sandurot Festival King and Queen, best in costume, and best in drum corps.*MA

2 more RP sites among 100 top dive spots

Philippine Star (http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?ArticleId=416395&publicationSubCategoryId=68)

http://img91.imageshack.us/img91/8618/sffz1.jpg

Two more tourist spots in the country have been included in the list of the world’s best travel destinations.

The Department of Tourism (DOT) yesterday reported that scuba diving experts have included Malapascua and Apo Island among the world’s top 100 dive spots.

Tourism Secretary Joseph Ace Durano said Sport Diver, the official magazine of the Professional Association of Diving Instructors, named the two local dive spots in its special report entitled “100 Dives to Do Before You Die.”

Durano said Malapascua was picked for its consistent thresher shark sightings while Apo Island was chosen for its excellent spots that attract underwater photographers.

It said that Apo Island Marine Sanctuary is replete with a continuous chain of underwater life, with hard and soft corals attracting reef fish like snappers, surgeon fish, damsel fish, parrot fish, anemone fish and wrasse, which, in turn, invite large species like barracuda, tuna, white tip and black tip sharks, turtles and manta rays.

Sport Diver said they scoured the globe to come up with the list of underwater sites that divers should not miss.

Durano said the inclusion of the Philippine sites in the United Kingdom’s publication proved that the country is a must see site and is among the world’s best.

“The list is based on the opinion of experts who were looking for sites that have rare characteristics which stand out from the usual dive haunts,” Durano pointed out.

Tourism Undersecretary Eduardo Jarque said the country is expected to register a banner year with the quality and quantity of sales and promotions programs implemented by the department.

“We are confident that arrivals from the United Kingdom may breach the 90,000 mark by yearend,” he added.

“In our participation in various travel trade fairs, we seldom encounter questions on the country’s security. Instead, we get rave comments about our sites,” said Domingo Ramon Enerio, Philippine tourism attaché to London.

The UK market has consistently been a significant source of tourists and the arrival of British visitors had increased by 18 percent during the first half of the year.

Chronicles from a Passerby
impressions from visitors and tourists

A typical impression for a public market is that it is dirty, filthy, and smelly. But many have said that the Dumaguete Public Market is a cut from the rest as it is one of the cleanest in the country. Take it from a total stranger.

Dumaguete Day Tour: Public MarketS
Sunday, November 02, 2008

from: Travel Notes: Philippines (http://philippinetravelnotes.blogspot.com/2008/11/dgtcrk10.html)

I was told by an online acquaintance not to miss the public market. And miss the public market, I did not!

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_nC2KigF46uY/SQ1WDSR8h2I/AAAAAAAABTA/_IMnp8jWUjg/s200/DSCF7886.JPG

When I got there however, I thought this was not a singular public market but more of a plural public markets. The area is composed of a number of buildings (six?) that comprises the public market of Dumaguete. Yes Daryll, I now agree with you. This must be one of the cleanest in the country. I did not at all experience the usual “yucky” feeling while roaming around this area. This place can even be compared with that of Marikina!

It starts right behind the bell tower with what is called the Fruit Market and fruits they really sell. Yes, the Dauin-bound ‘esrides’ park here. Too many kinds of fruits on sale; from apples to jackfruits, to oranges, guavas, mangoes, durians to peaches, pears and papayas. They’re all there! I loved the smell at this market – interestingly fruity – what else hehe! The delectable scent of the langka dominates the place. And I wondered how they keep or where they throw their garbage in this place – never had a chance to spot any.

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_nC2KigF46uY/SQ1WfDcpfhI/AAAAAAAABTI/qisiCKSByVQ/s200/DSCF7887.JPG

Then there is the Fruit & Vegetable Plaza. Name it you’ll find it there. I was surprised to see there was even a stall selling oregano seeds! Whatever those are hehe! Very first thing I noticed in this area is/was that the vegetables are laid out as they are – fresh or not. No manangs who continuously douse their vegetables with water to make them look fresh.

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_nC2KigF46uY/SQ1XH_oVgaI/AAAAAAAABTQ/R_DcJmDXyIg/s200/DSCF7893.JPG

What actually caught my attention in this area of the market were the numbered coconuts. The style in this place is to mark each “de-husked” coconut with the price for which it is being sold. Hmm, did I say it right? Is there such a word as “de-husked”. Whatever hehe, basta, I mean “with the husk removed”! Am just taking the analogy from “de-boned” and “de-faced” hehehe! And I had to stay a few minutes watching an old man mark each of those coconuts with the big numbers for a price tag! I asked how many marking pens he consumes each day and told me “the equivalent of two”. When I clarified what he meant by “the equivalent of two” he told me that they would usually refill the pen with ink so that it’s cheaper. Hmm, wise!

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_nC2KigF46uY/SQ1Xm9-dmtI/AAAAAAAABTY/TQpQzF5eQVk/s200/DSCF7888.JPG

Then there is also the Fish Terminal & Storage Complex and I actually did not feel bad being in it. While they trade and sale fish of all types, being there does not give you the yucky feel of trotting on wet, slimy and smelly floor. In fact, it sports the same kind of flooring that most every public market in the country are made of - bare concrete. I could not say this place is sparklingly tidy nor sterile but I think the right word is orderliness - and perhaps too dryness of the surroundings.

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_nC2KigF46uY/SQ1Yg9qcDnI/AAAAAAAABTg/ZKumFapS-Wg/s200/DSCF7890.JPG

Next buildings are the meats and poultry, fish and other sections selling everything like DVDs, bags, toys, school items, clothes, etc., like you would see them at Divisoria. So it’s a normal public market after all. But why do I (and other observers) like this particular public market? Is it because it’s right behind the church? Nah! I think the clue is discipline and order. Each stall sticks to its allotted space and each vendor has a stall. This is very much unlike anywhere else where the stall owners would eat up the alleys with their wares or extend protrusions so that they can be more visible to the buying public than their competitors. In this place, I did not see vendors spreading their wares on the streets nor did I see ambulant vendors thrusting their goods at people. In this place, the alleyway is still and alleyway, the sidewalk is still a side walk (you know, that place where people walk on? Remember?), the parking areas are still parking areas – and they even have designated spaces for motorcycles and cars! This is probably the secret. Then again, I could have been visiting at the “wrong” time? I hope not!

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_nC2KigF46uY/SQ1ceIRxjNI/AAAAAAAABTo/boPLYs95ELw/s200/DSCF7891+copy.jpg

Hey, in an inner building of the square that is lined with carinderias on ground floor and what seemed like air-conditioned offices on second level, something caught my curiosity! These are the tarpaulin sheets draped above each carinderia and obviously sponsored/donated by Coke. Each sheet has the logo of coke printed on it with a name at the bottom. I got curious what those names were so I asked one of the stores on the other side of the street. Simple! Those names are the owners of the carinderias. Coolness! In this place, they don’t anymore go to the extremes of creating funny or even silly names like “Kikay’s Kainan” or “Asado ni Mando”! They just sport the FULL NAME (yep, that’s the full first name and full surname of the owner/proprietor of the carinderia)! Unique!

My second trip to Dumaguete was quite different from my first. It was one not of exploration (we didn’t venture out of town proper) but really more of rest and relaxation. My itinerary during this trip varied from the one Igor had prepared for me. This one was painstakingly organized by my officemate Leah and it revolved around one important theme–FOOD. Yes, this time around, I ate my way around Dumaguete.

http://img241.imageshack.us/img241/9766/sonyhandycampics038fa4.jpg

Our first stop was, of course, our hotel. Bethel Inn. I stayed here the last time and the inn’s hospitalish interiors felt like home. I love how the place is familiar to me now. Of course, it still does not change the fact that every time I walk through its halls, I can’t help but conjure images of ghosts popping out of nowhere to chase the living daylights out of me. Seriously, this is part of Dumaguete’s charm for me. The town has this antique feel to it that it’s no wonder writers come here for inspiration.

At the ground level of Bethel is Cafe Filomena, where we had our daily dose of budbod kabog and fried danggit. And hot tsokolate. It’s the best way to jumpstart a Dumaguete food trip. You can’t go to Dumaguete and NOT eat budbod. It’s just not right.:P

I also got to check out Persian Palate. I didn’t get to eat there during my last trip and I’m glad I went because I’ve been having ridiculous lassi and kebab cravings in Manila, and their banana lassi and chicken kebab with buttered rice (to hell with calories) left me feeling satisfied.

A trip to the restaurant is a must not only because of the food but also because of the lovely murals on the walls.

You can also be like Jeff here and have your picture taken with the lady on the wall as if she were your girlfriend! Bwahaha

This being Jeff’s first time in Dumaguete (actually it is also his first time to ride a plane and he is 23 years old if I am not mistaken), we simply had to take him to Sansrival. It is a patisserie along the boulevard that serves the best sans rival. Why else would they name the restaurant after it? :P I don’t usually eat sans rival because I hate food that requires extreme chewing effort but the one they bake here in Dumaguete is different from most of the sans rivals I’ve tasted. It’s surprisingly light and buttery and Jeff actually stacked THREE slices to eat in one sitting. Haha! Leah had this one (I forgot what it’s called but it’s made of dates and chocolate and something else that’s chewy):

My second trip to Dumaguete was quite different from my first. It was one not of exploration (we didn’t venture out of town proper) but really more of rest and relaxation. My itinerary during this trip varied from the one Igor had prepared for me. This one was painstakingly organized by my officemate Leah and it revolved around one important theme–FOOD. Yes, this time around, I ate my way around Dumaguete.

I guess it's more than P200.00. Too bad there are no Kinglong buses plying Dumaguete-Bacolod yet. I hope they will field some in this route soon.

Oooops, I guess SM will not anymore push through with the Mangnao site. I guess that area is too small for it to be competitive with Robinsons here in Dumaguete.

However, some sources indicate that SM could be positioning in an area along or near the under construction Sibulan-Bacong superhighway, near Bagacay and Valencia. My guess is that SM is buying a lot in that area probably 8-12 hecatares, or even more. They might set up a new business park or district to jumpstart the opening of a new growth center in the interior of Dumaguete.

I was told that building near dcdb is a commercial building with probably apartment on top. Spaces for BPO companies could also be a possibility.

The employees of the company supposed to construct the high rise building said the city approved only 12 storeys.

Where to raise kids

By Michael Tan
Philippine Daily Inquirer

These days we are flooded with “best” and “worst” lists, most of which are really more for entertainment (e.g., worst dressed women, and the Ignoble Awards for the most ridiculous research conducted).

The more useful lists mainly come from the United Nations system, ranking countries on various indices. The UNDP Human Development Index is perhaps the most comprehensive, combining economic and social indicators to measure quality of life. I’ve already discussed, in a recent column, how the Philippines ranks first among developing countries in the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Equity rankings, i.e., the gap between our women and men in terms of access to opportunities is said to be the narrowest...

Safety, community, education

Businessweek has still another survey of best places to raise kids, summarizing their criteria as “safety, community and education.” OnBoard, a real estate research company, did the data-crunching looking at national test scores, cost of living, recreational and cultural activities, number of schools, and crime rates.

Reading about Groesbeck made me think of our own situation. Ideally, one should be able to live in a fairly quiet and safe suburb, but not too far from good schools, libraries, children’s recreation centers, and of course be connected to the world through the Internet. It could have worked out with the idea of a Mega Manila, living, say, in Angono and commuting to Quezon City, but we’ve killed those options with congestion and high crime rates.

There’s hope yet for other emerging metropolitan areas, if they’d be careful about planning, not just for the city center but for adjoining towns. Right now, I would consider the cities of Cebu, Iloilo and Dumaguete as good places to raise children. Iloilo is sometimes called the local Athens because of all its schools, yet within a 15-minute drive, still in the city, you have places that are truly rustic (chickens, carabaos, cogon?). Cebu and Dumaguete have all that, too, and the mountains and the sea.

But all this is day-dreaming. I don’t have those options right now, being tied to teaching in Manila and elderly parents who would find it difficult adjusting to a new place. I’ll dream on, but in the meantime, the Inquirer or some other special interest group (UNICEF for children) can begin to rate the quality of life in our cities, not just for children but for the elderly, for women and for families in general.

Full article (http://opinion.inquirer.net/inquireropinion/columns/view/20081128-174817/Where-to-raise-kids).
