Wow. So it's almost done... Uh, wait.. is it? But as far as i know, it is only the hotel that has yet to be finished in this sports complex.. the convention center, underground parking, rubberized oval, beach volleyball court, and bleachers are all done.....

sayang.. we did not win the bidding for the palarong pambansa this year.. but if the palarong pambansa was to be held a day right after the bidding, then i am sure we would win coz we are 99% ready and capable that time already.

What we also need is a LARGE parking lot.

I like this too, but I guess only if we build wider roads outside the CBD periphery.

Silliman Medical Arts Building will officially be opening tomorrow!

Passed by SU-MAB this afternoon and it was being prepared for the grand opening tomorrow despite the unfinished lobbies of 2nd, 3rd, 4th levels, 5th level conference hall, and some of the floor-to-ceiling glass windowed suite rooms...

Definitely. It's a nightmare looking for a parking space at the CBD esp during afternoons and esp if you are driving four-wheels.. The parking spaces before (e. g. the one beside Meryl) are now being occupied by buildings..

Hmmm, Dumaguete would be needing several multilevel parking facilities several years from now with the continued rise in the number of vehicles.

Gamay nlng and our CBD will be like my nose now. Very very congested!.. :D But once Dgte business park and the new businesses will occupy the uptown area, then hopefully the CBD will be decongested.....

I liked the idea of making the CBD vehicle free zone. I think this will really improve not only the traffic, but business and tourism.

I liked the idea of making the CBD vehicle free zone. I think this will really improve not only the traffic, but business and tourism.

Converting the whole stretch of Perdices street to a park-like walking bricked lane was a master plan of a former mayor. No doubt it will definitely look good, will attract tourists and might also lessen air pollution in the area. But the prob with that project is that it could just make the traffic and vehicular congestion worst since no vehicle can enter Perdices St. Vehicles are only left with the peripheral roads of Perdices and that would mean more traffic and congestion. I dont see it as a solution to the problem of traffic and congestion. I cant imagine that situation now! That project was only feasible that time where there were not so many vehicles here yet....... There should always be long term study and consideration with what possible problems might occur with a project... Good thing that was never realized.... The ony best way to decongest the CBD is by creating other business districts and having more wider roads outside the present CBD.. Dgte Business Park, the Proposed Uptown Dumaguete, and the circumferential road will probably be the solution..

johnnyS
February 15th, 2009, 03:05 PM
You can also think of this the other way...

If the Perdices was walking only street, then more people will not bring their cars to shop there. Or bring the cars to the "imaginary future parking lot somewhere in the vicinity of the CBD", then go shopping at Perdices.

And the perdices then could be partially covered to shield people from rain as people go from one building to another. This will in effect create the entire Perdices street as an outdoor shopping mall.

Can you see al fresco dining resto/cafes ALL ALONG Perdices? I can...

It will just shoot up the store sales and tourists. I can see it.

Yes. I can see that, too. That's the positive and the "desired effects" of the project. But it has it's own "side effects" / "adverse effects," that can possibly outweigh the "desidered effects". Because when it was planned, designed and proposed, a parking area and road widening on Perdices' peripheries was never considered, which is very important if we make Perdices vehicle-free considering that it is a main business thoroughfare. Having none of those made the city dads and locals think twice about it esp that the number of vehicles are increasing every single day.. Where will those vehicles pass and park if a main city road will be closed for them? Thats why it never got the approval of the majority of the city dads and the locals. A parking lot or a multi-level parking building and road widening should have been included to make the project more feasible.

Maybe if i become a mayor now, then i will have to work on the project and make it happen but with proper consideration of vehiclular traffic and parking areas... Perdices converted into a street strip mall is a very good idea...

I think a part of this problem is the number of tricycles.
Yes, I understand the need to give jobs to the drivers.
However, from the City's point of view, it would be so much more effective/efficient to have a LARGE BUS system.
If there was a bus route, I for one, will use it everyday.

The problem is, it will force out thousands of tricycle drivers of their jobs and their livelihood...

There was already a proposal about that.. to cut down the number of trikes then ultimately, wipe them all out and replace all of them with multicabs and taxis.. but their sheer number is just too difficult for the local government to implement the proposal. the drivers can go on protest for days and it has already happened before. its difficult. :ohno:

How did dumaguete come to have so many tricycle drivers?

by demand?... i dont know. maybe its an easy livelihood for many.. not sure.

but we dont have to worry about them getting too many now because the city is not anymore accepting new tricycle registrations....... this started in 2006.

In my opinion, the number of Dumaguete tricycles should be vastly cut down and replaced with jeepneys with fixed routes like everyone uses in Cebu. Jeeps don't have the best reputation, but...
- They're much more comfortable than trikes
- Can seat much more people
- Are easier to regulate
- Faster

A question:

When you park a car at any parking space, whether in front of McDo, or Mercury, whatever, there is always a "parking attendant" who appears and tries to help.

Although I consider it more of a hinderance (because they actually block my car from the rear as I try to get out of the space), I realize they are just trying to make a living.

Anyway, how much do people give them for their efforts?

Coffee
February 16th, 2009, 03:34 PM
I give them nothing. I wouldn't want to encourage them by paying for a service I didn't ask for or need.

On the rare occassion that they are helpful, I don't give more than 2 pesos.

Guys, did you notice the layout of Robinsons Dumaguete. The left side is the flat portion, and it is also the portion where the area is blocked going to the Calindagan Road. When the Calindagan Road area is cleared (granting Robinsons has bought the whole area) I believe the expansion would be towards the left side to complete the bulging symmetry of Robinsons Dumaguete. I heard recently that ACES Cebu is planning to put up a clinic here. In fact they are looking for an area where they could open their clinic. How about at Robinsons? Or at Z Town Center if it materializes? This is definitely a good development as people from Dumaguete and neighboring areas will now have more access to top notch opthalmologist and may not have to go to Cebu or Manila to get their LASIK surgery.

Max's eyes
expansion to Dumaguete

If it's doing good in Bacolod, it should do well in Dumaguete.

Inspired by the success of their Bacolod franchisee, Max's Fried Chicken is now setting its eyes on Dumaguete City as the site of their next restaurant.

Two franchise officers of Max's were in town last week to look for interested franchisees.

"We had reservations in coming over to Dumaguete because this is a 'chicken country,' said Ronnie Linao, franchise development officer.

Dumaguete is home to Jo's Chicken Inato, a native restaurant that has branched out to Metro Manila and to key cities in the country. Other established grilled chicken restaurants are the City Burger along Real Street and the Atong Kamalig along Katada Street.

There are also several "lechon manok" native restaurants and stalls that can be found throughout the City, such as Golden Roy's, Negros Lechon Manok and Ogis, to name a few............

Quiamco said Max's only wants their Dumaguete franchisees to build the restaurant along the Rizal Boulevard or Perdices Street, two of Dumaguete's main thoroughfares. He said the entry of Max's would be a boost to Dumaguete's economy, which will also provide employment opportunities for at least 43 people.*

Doctors Directory which is color coded according to specialty. Orange for Family Medicine, green for Internal Medicine, yellow for Obstetrics and Gynecology, pink for Pediatrics and blue for Surgery.

If you are a patient needing a consultation, first you have to find your doctor's name in the directory shown above or on the computer screen in the Patient's Queuing Kiosk. If you don't have a doctor yet, you can ask for assistance from the receptionist at the counter who will help you choose a doctor based on your specific condition.

The Patient's Queuing Kiosk is a table with a touch-screen computer and a printer that will give each patient a priority number for the computerized queuing system. An instruction sheet goes:

------------------------------------------------------------------------
PATIENT'S QUEUING KIOSK
Steps to follow:

1. Press the name of your doctor on the screen.

2. Press "Get a Priority Number".

3. A print out of your priority number will come out from the printer.

4. Get your priority number slip.

5. Proceed to the waiting area and wait for your priority number to be called.

6. If your priority number is called (it will be indicated in the display screen and an automated voice will call your number), please proceed to your doctor's room/clinic.

Note: The automated voice will call your number in this manner:

"Room _____ (room number of your doctor) now serving Priority _____ (the number in your priority slip)."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

The MAB ultra mod queuing system is akin to the flight arrival-departure monitors in airports, or to the now-serving numbers display in some banks. The numbers in red are the room numbers of the doctors. The numbers in white on a blue background are the priority numbers. Patients should periodically check their priority numbers, watch the screen and listen for the automated voice to call out the number on their print-outs.

Cge, i hope i can find sa net coz i remember it was posted one time. there were a lot of revisions sa design.. like it was revised 4 times coz there were about 3 architects commissioned all in all then finally, i think the design now is made by FU's Dean Sinco. Am i right? those who know something about this, please shed light...:)

Were only 280 + in our batch including the old curriculum.. Hopefully.. hehe..

Grrr.. Were always beaten by Xavier for the past 3 years.. Nakakainis!!!

But Xavier still has to prove itself like Silliman has unceasingly proven itself for about 50 years now. Xavier is new and I guess it has never garnered 100% passing yet, unlike Silliman's consistent 100% passing from 1950s-1990s. And a string of topnotchers (Number 1). Dumaguete city gov’t, USA foundation to launch milk program
02/21/2009 | 10:16 AM

The Dumaguete city government and a foundation funded by the United States government will launch a six-month milk-feeding program for underweight and malnourished children.

Online news site Visayan Daily Star (www.visayandailystar.com) reported the program, which will cover at least 25 villages in the central Philippine city, is due for launching late this month.

The city government and the Land O'Lakes Foundation Philippines Inc. funded by the US government are the main proponents of the program.

Land O'Lakes country manager Qazi Yawar Naeem is expected to go to Dumaguete for the launching program, the report said.

Dumaguete City nutrition program coordinator Lourdes Taburaza said the program intends to help malnourished children in 25 out of 30 identified village in the city.

Expected to avail of the program are 701 pre-school children who were identified during "Operation Timbang" conducted by barangay nutrition scholars in September last year.

Also included as beneficiaries are 632 Grades 1 and 2 and selected Grade 3 pupils in 15 public elementary schools of the city.

They will receive one pack of fresh milk a day, excluding Saturdays and Sundays, or a total of 6,665 packs of fresh milk in six weeks.

Under the program, the city government will allocate P1 million for the project.

Late last year, 47 cows from New Zealand were shipped through Land O'Lakes for distribution to local government units in the Metro Dumaguete area.

After a few months, the cows were producing 250 to 300 liters of fresh milk daily. - GMANews.TV

DSWD seeks P1.5M for Negros Oriental flood victims
02/21/2009 | 12:18 PM

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in Dumaguete City in Negros Oriental has sought P1.495 million from the city government to help victims of flooding last Feb. 7.

The online news site Visayan Daily Star (www.visayandailystar.com) reported that city social welfare officer Marina Mendoza reported 14 barangays in the city were affected in the unprecedented flooding.

Mendoza reported to the city council that 429 families were displaced, 247 houses were damaged, and 182 destroyed due to the floods caused by heavy rains.

Some of the affected families are still staying at temporary shelters like chapels and village halls.

Mendoza said the P1,495,496 requested would also cover P15,000 for the overtime pay of social field workers who assisted the flood victims last Jan. 1 and Feb. 7 and 8.

On the New Year's Eve, another flashflood displaced several families, mostly living along the bank of the Banica River.

The city government had already appropriated more than P300,000 for the Jan. 1 flashfloods.

Many families became victims of both flooding incidents because they insisted on returning to their illegal dwellings along the riverbank, Mendoza added. - GMANews.TV

Xavier University College of Nursing first batch of NLE takers was batch 1992 and they made it 100 percent. It always went 100 percent except on 1998, 1999, and 2001 when one to three students failed in the exam. XU closed its nursing program last 2001 due to low demand of nurses and reopened last 2003. The first batch after it reopened took the exam last december 2006 and got 100 percent. Batch 2007 got 98 percent, and the batch 2008 (which took the exam last november) 99 percent. Every year, it produces top notchers, the highest rank achieved is 2nd place. I'm from Xavier University and took the exam last November and luckily passed. And we always recognize Silliman and all the top performing schools for their commitment of producing the best Filipino nurses. Let's all be angels in the sick room. God bless you Silliman! :)

Maybe ritche's point was XUCN is still young compared to SUCN which existed since 1947 and started with a 100% passing rate in the licensure exam in 1951 until at present (except in some instances). Let's hope that both schools will continue to be on top.

History of Silliman University College of Nursing

Starting as a 4-year nursing program under the College of Arts and Sciences with Ms. Letty Wood as Dean, the Silliman University College of Nursing (SUCN) was established in 1947 by an American Missionary, Mrs. Paul Smith (nee Mary Marquez). Miss Ma. Concepcion M. Roble was the first Filipino dean of the college, from 1954 until her retirement in 1980

To enrich the student's professional preparation, the 5-year nursing curriculum was implemented in 1958. As mandated by the Department of Education and Culture however, the curriculum was back to its 4-year baccalaureate program in 1976 --- with revision in 1984 during the deanship of Dr. Dalisay M. Dumalag. Today in keeping with the university's mission-vision of molding students into adaptable and responsible citizen in a changing world, the nursing student is equipped with knowledge, skills and the desirable attitudes to respond to the needs and problem of society.

In 1980, the SUCN became accredite with the Philippine Acccrediting Association of Schools, colleges and Universities (PSASCU). In recognition of its high standars for quality education, the Department of Education, Culture and Sports awarded SUCN with a deregulated status during the deanship of Dr. Maria Tersita Sy-Sinda in 1990.

Since 1951, SUCN has maintained its standard of a 100% passing record in the Nursing Board Examinations except for different instances at 99%. In addition many of itsgraduates top these board examinations for which the professioal regulation Commission has awarded SUCN with plaques of recognition since 1991.

In 1994, SUCN was chosen by John Hopkins International Education for Reproductive Health (JPIEGO) and the association of Deans pf Philippine Colleges of Nursing Region VII. Furthermore, SUCN became pilot college in the offering the Computer Assisted Learning (MODCAL) on Reproductive Health. Not long after, SUCN established the
Adolescent Reproductie Health Satellite Clinic to cater to Sillimanians and other schools' needs.

In 1997-1998, SUCN was recognized by the commission on Higher Education as the Center of Excellence in Nursing Education (COENE). A five year memorandum of agreement has assured SUCN of CHED financial assistance aimed at improving faculty qualifications and other projects. Most of the faculty members earned its masters degree
through their assistance.

SUCN's openess to networking and a strong sense of advocacy towards promotion of health, sparkled relevance researches and module preparation of Domestic/Family Violence for nationwide use. SY 199-2000 ushered another CHED authorized program - the Expanded Tertiary Education Equivacy and Accreditation Program towards a BSN degree.

Inded, excellence has may facets. With nursing graduates positioned un many parts of the worls, this excellence has also been attained with the steadfast support of a vast network of SUCN alumni, benefactors and friends. With the university's motto of "via veritas vita" , the dean and the faculty members are one in vision through different lenses
towards best quality Christian nursing education.

My first post was simply to correct ritche. It was mentioned on his post that we haven't achieved 100 percent passing... So I was just trying to correct that statement. And yes, we know that SU is one of the great insitutions in terms of Nursing Education. We don't see SU as our competitor or something. Infact, we admire SU and all other schools that has been producing excellent nurses. Ever since when we were still students in XU, we were taught not to compete with other schools but to focus on our greatest competitor and that is... ourselves. :) Let's all cheers for the result of the November 2008 Nurse Licensure Exam!

This is actually the place adjacent to the Jo's by the Sea. Entrance is 100 pesos, which I think is cheap considering the really nice ambience that you get. You can actually use the place for retreat or prayer gatherings. Why not a morning or late evening prayer watch in this area? But of course yo have to ask permission from the owner :).

Am sorry for that. But I knew of XU's first batch of nursing only three years ago, and I think you got only 98%. I didn't know you had a nursing program way back that time. But your nursing program is not yet a COE, I guess.

XU's first batch of takers after it reopened which took last December 2006 Nurse Licensure Exam got 100 percent passing rate with a top notcher (Venus Balatero, 6th place). Then last year, 98 percent with two top notchers (Katrina Akut 6th place and Hernessa Hernandez 8th place). And this year, I think you know it already. With regards to the COE, I think the primary reason is that we didn't have the facilities which is part of the criteria set by CHED. Liceo de Cagayan University is the COE of Nursing Education in Region X. Facilities, they have it. They're one of the oldest nursing schools in the country too. They performed well before, it's only recently when their passing rate has gone bad.

Fortunately, our university president heard our prayers. He invested 17 million worth of new nursing facilities. Now, the present batch is enjoying world class facilities with mock ER. OR-DR, ICU, ward, NAL, and a Nursing Ampitheatre which we haven't enjoyed. So we'll see what will come next. What's important is that just like your school, we have been performing well in NLE. Long live our schools! :)

OT: there are many aspects to consider in order to become a COE, not just facilities:

1. Quality of Programs
> there are only two universities in the Philippines offering Doctorate in Nursing: UP Dilliman and Silliman University; SU is currently offering Advance Practioner in Nursing through teleconferencing with an American University..
2. Continuing Education Faculty (faculty seats)
3. Research and Instruction
4. Teacher-student ratio
5. NLE performance
6 Quality of Graduates
7. Facilities

They said this building as well as the Bread sanctuary will house a callcenter company when you're already transferred to your new ultramodern sanctuary. Hmmm, somebody told me 2-3 callcenter companies are on the Dumaguete horizon.

hello everyone,

University of St. La Salle-Bacolod is also offering a Doctorate Degree in Nursing...it was offered just last semester..but the sad thing is, even if we have all the high-end facilities, students are not properly screened that's why our school suffer during the board exam..:ohno:

Someone mentioned it somewhere.

I liked the idea of making the CBD vehicle free zone. I think this will really improve not only the traffic, but business and tourism.

I guess the closure of some major roads is already a rehearsal for the closure of the CBD to traffic. This could be tested for several weeks so the CBD will be made into an open air mall.

actually they are not, most of the bikes were pinoy owned, you will have problems to find a descent Harley in Duma, some in Bayawan as there is the best Bikeshop/mechanic of the whole area. The most bikes in Duma are from Japanese Manufacturers.

Funny sitenote, when i went home early sunday morning I saw quite a few guys, loading bikes on their pick-up and driving home. guess it's like with girls... some have them as a trophy and some can really ride them... i mean the bikes of course... hehe

Bread of Life is not there anymore.

I'm not sure where they are meeting at this time, but they are in the process of building a large sanctuary in Batinguel, duol sa Barangay Hall. Worth taking a pic of sometime.

I don't know how many of you are familiar with Candau-ay area. The nice new bridge that connected Candau-ay with Calabnugan was destroyed by the flood. It makes you reaize how strong the floods were, because that bridge is the highest point of elevation in that area.

Another bit of sad news, is that Miracle Mile has closed shop. The owners are leaving for the States, and were hoping someone would buy the business, but no one is able to buy, so they've been selling their appliances and furniture.

From what I've read the past few pages, congrats Nicko! Where will you be nursing? SUMC?

The Silliman University College of Law Debate Team swept all three awards in the Grand Law Debate against Ateneo de Manila Law School held February 20 at the Claire Isabel McGill Luce Auditorium.

Silliman took the affirmative side on the proposition, “Resolved: That the Reproductive Health and Population Development Bill (HB No. 5043) be Enacted Into Law.”

Freshman law student Donna Ametyst Bernardo was adjudged Best Debater, while sophomore student Joshua Francisco Ablong and junior student Ma. Zusabel Digaum were awarded Best Rebuttal Speaker and Best Speaker, respectively.

Justice Amy Lazaro-Javier, senior member of the Court of Appeals 20th Division, chaired the panel of judges. Her members were Atty. Alex Monteclar, Dean of the University of San Carlos College of Law, and Atty. Joel Obar, former Dean of the Foundation University College of Law.

The other members of the SU Law debate team were Jian Wasawas, Elizabeth Karla Aguilan (team manager) and Ramon Antonio Ruperto (lead researcher).

Considered as one of the highlights of the Law Week Celebration, the Grand Law Debate is an annual tradition of friendly debating organized by the SU Law Oratorical and Debating Club (ORADEC).

DUMAGUETE: A FIBER-RICH CITY
http://www.epacificglobal.com/images/epacificglobal-abtusimg01_02.jpg

Dumaguete's telco infrastructure qualifies it to ride on the growth of global outsourcing industry
By Dominique Cimafranca

One secret that will serve Dumaguete well in its ambitions is the telecommunications infrastructure in the city. Unknown to many, Dumaguete actually has a robust high-capacity network already in place. This network consists of microwave links and a fiber-optic backbone which connect the city not only to Manila and Cebu City, but to Mindanao and other islands, as well.

The fiber optic links going into Dumaguete are among the best for a city outside of Metro Manila. The total capacity of these fiber links is a whopping 320 Gbps* which translates to 4.5 million high quality data and voice lines – a capacity which can accommodate five million call center agents. Bandwidth-hungry outsourcing businesses such as call centers, transcription services, and digital post-production will find ample room for growth for their telecommunication needs.

Redundancy is another key feature of Dumaguete’s telco infrastructure. Dumaguete is a landing site for the fiber optic backbone networks of Globe Telecommunications, as well as Telecphil – the national consortium of telco providers. In addition, microwave communications supplement the links, assuring that service businesses need not fear outages caused by a downed cable.

Investment promotion is going full-speed ahead for Dumaguete with the coordinated efforts of local government, national agencies, and non-government organizations. Already boasting of topnotch graduates, the city is well positioned for growth in the booming international services outsourcing industry.

*320 gbps and growing...

DUMAGUETE IT/ITES Firms

"In the past few years, several software development companies have emerged in the Philippines, as well as many other IT-related enterprises, like Medical Transcription Services and Call Centres, most of them however clustered in big cities like Manila and Cebu. Little did the world know that Dumaguete City, apart from its human resources, has access to the country’s most advanced telecom infrastructure right outside its doorstep, comprising a high speed fibre optic backbone network with a 320Gbps capacity!

"This rarely promoted advantage this little city has over the rest of the country, combined with four well reputed universities and several other learning institutions, and added to that a considerably lower cost of operating businesses compared to the metro cities, makes Dumaguete City probably the most attractive place in the Philippines for ICT growth today."

Hi Nicko,

I don't know if you realize this, but Miracle Mile closed shop towards the end of last year. The family are moving back to the States in April. They have been selling their appliances, furniture and books.

It's a shame, coz it had such a great atmosphere, and good, healthy food.

Their cookies has become one of the very popular pasalubongs. I'll miss it. Sad to know all of them wil go back to the States. I know all of them were based there and just came to put up that wonderful cafe. Im hoping another coffee shop will replace their shop at Portal West.

4 foreign chambers identify 5 cities as retirement havens (http://www.mb.com.ph/BSNS20080725130646.html)
By BERNIE CAHILES-MAGKILAT

Four foreign chambers of commerce comprising of Japan, Korea, European and US have identified five areas – Manila, Subic, Tagaytay, Cebu and Dumaguete – as ideal retirement havens in the country that can really provide full service to foreign retirees.
:okay:

Henry Schumacher, executive vice president of the European Chamber in the Philippines, said the four foreign chambers have already formed the International Chamber of Commerce, Retirement and Healthcare Coalition primarily to promote the Philippines as a retirement market.

"We have to see to it that they will be provided the required amenities and an end-to-end service – from the time they arrive at the airport to caretaker down to undertaker," Schumacher said.

"We believe the retirement market is an exciting market for the Philippines and if we want to be known as a retirement haven then we have to move now," Schumacher said.

According to Schumacher, the five cities have been chosen as priority areas as the country’s retirement sites largely due to their excellent medical facilities to serve the medical needs of foreign retirees, who may decide to make the Philippines their second home.

The five cities have excellent medical facilities and have the right environment for retirees to stay longer in the country.

The NEGROS ORIENTAL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE & INDUSTRY held their annual general assembly last year at Bethel Guest House. Keynote speaker was businessman-tycoon, Mr Julio Sy, Jr., developer and owner of the 26-hectares DUMAGUETE BUSINESS PARK AND IT PLAZA.

He announced the Phase II of the mega project is in its finishing stage. Phase II development includes additional commercial and residential development, a gas station, a business hotel, a bus terminal, a hospital / medical clinic and a government center.

Presently, Phase I development of the business park has already made a tedious impact on the city's local economy, which is the IT Center where TELETECH currently occupies most of the area with two buildings.

The park will capitalize Dumaguete's strengths namely:

Tourism
BPO / IT
Medical Wellness Industries
Education
Residential (especially for expats / foreign retirees)

The park will compliment Dumaguete's quaint charm, culture, and gentility by providing a campus-like development with the right balance of modern infrastructure, open green spaces, adequate parking spaces, environmentally friendly facilities and an architecture that is faithful to Dumaguete's unique history and "university town" ambience.

The Business Park commisioned internationally renowned master planner Mr. Jun Palafox to develop a master plan for the property that will offer a world class facilityfor local and foreign locators.

Hi Nicko,

I don't know if you realize this, but Miracle Mile closed shop towards the end of last year. The family are moving back to the States in April. They have been selling their appliances, furniture and books.

It's a shame, coz it had such a great atmosphere, and good, healthy food.

Yeah, they really have a great coffee shop there. But I guess some of the reasons is its quite hidden location, and the opening of new coffee shops. The Bulgerins are a wonderful couple, and their two daughters are gorgeous, maybe perfect :).

Family businesses aren’t a sure thing. Some last for many decades, while others go pffft when the second or third generation members take the helm.

One family business that’s gaining strength as the years go by is the jewelry business of the Sarabia-Gorriceta family of Iloilo. Amparo Sarabia started a jewelry store in Iloilo. Later on, her eldest daughter, Dr. Sandra Sarabia-Gorriceta (an optometrist following the footsteps of her grandfather, Dr. Federico Sarabia, the first optometrist in the Philippines), also went into the jewelry/pawnshop business with her own shop, the SS Gorriceta, which now has three stores in Iloilo. Now Dr. Sandra’s son, Felix Gorriceta III, is following tradition, heading the jewelry chain store Karat World.

“Growing up in Iloilo, I was exposed early to the business. I have a brother and a sister, but I was the only one interested in the jewelry business,” shares Felix. He recounts that when he was in grade 1 or 2, he already knew how to open the store vault. In high school, he helped out in the store, and listened in when his mom talked with suppliers...

Innovations
Felix lost no time in introducing innovations to the way the family ran the jewelry business. “I made Karat World a brand, not just a jewelry store,” says Felix.

From that one store in Harrison Plaza, Felix grew the business. By the end of this year, Karat World will have 16 stores nationwide, with three stores slated to open this year outside Manila (at the Marquee, an Ayala Mall set to open in May in Clark, Pampanga; in Robinsons Dumaguete; and in Cebu).
