nicko March 21st, 2009, 07:43 PM MARVIN FLORES, Class of 2009 Summa cum Laude in Physics
updated from Visayan Daily Star
Geniuses are born, not made.
If you are among those who firmly abide by this dictum but could not quite find someone who could best epitomize or reinforce this belief, then brace yourself for a stunning revelation.
The monicker, in fact, cannot just be used loosely on any Tom, Dick, or Harry. It has to be bestowed on someone who, despite the obstacles - most of them because of force of circumstance - hurdled all of them, coming out victorious and triumphant in the end.
Marvin Flores, this is not yet the end of his struggle. His biggest challenge in the saga called Life has just begun.
As a Bachelor of Science in Physics student at Silliman University, he was awarded the 2005 Gawad Kalayaan sa Kabataan, one of only four winners from all over the Philippines who was conferred the distinguished honor done annually in the celebration of Independence Day sponsored by the Philippine Independence Commission and the National Historical Institute.
"What happened was my school, Ramon Teves Pastor Memorial-Dumaguete Science High School, submitted a profile of my achievements to the Department of Education Dumaguete City Division. It included a compilation of my community involvement, my academic achievements as well as testimonials of good moral character," Flores shares, reminiscing the short notice he got from DepEd officials for him to go to Manila for the final selection. This was two days after the start of classes for the first semester.
What clinched the award for him, according to Flores, was the one-on-one interview each of the finalists had to undergo.
"I was made to expound on my community activities, about who my favorite hero is. But I think I impressed the judges because I was asked what my favorite subject is, and I readily said it is Physics. I was debating with my interviewer, who was a lawyer, who asked me to explain my choice of a course (BS Physics). I said I chose pure physics, not applied physics, because the former tackles the theoretical aspects thus making it versatile and all-encompassing, while the latter involves the application of such theories," Flores explains enthusiastically, confessing to having expressed interest on the subject in high school. He posted a grade of 99 percent in Physics back then.
Awards and such glowing achievements, however, are not new to the unassuming Flores, even as he is quick to add that "our heroes, who experienced a lot of hardship and difficulties, have achieved much more than me."
He graduated valedictorian in high school, he also finished as valedictorian of South City Elementary School in Mangnao, Dumaguete City in 2001. Candidly expressing to not being too good in English, on the contrary, he excelled in Math and Science, regularly winning in the regional Math Olympiad.
When he was in fourth year high school, his team composed of three members won first place in the national science quiz held at the Quezon City Science High School. For this, he pocketed P 2,000.
In Grade VI, he got first place in the national history quiz bee held in Tagaytay for which he was given a personal computer set and a 24-volume Collier's Encyclopedia.
If these things may not be of significant value to some people today, they certainly are for Flores. He makes no qualms about his family background and the dire straits he has been used to since birth. In fact, his mother had to sell the personal computer set to a relative in Manila just so she would have transportation money to go back home to Dumaguete, after claiming her son's prizes in the big city.
The young Flores, without hesitation, decided to keep the encyclopedia set which has become his favorite reading fare since then, preferring to read reference books.
The eldest of two sons of Alvin Flores of Zamboanga City and the former Marilyn Mira of Dumaguete, the young Flores remembers not having any electricity at home since he was in Grade I until Grade VI. His father works us a contractual carpenter and earns P150-P200 daily on a good day.
Consistently maintaining first honors in his entire elementary years, he had to make do with a lamparilla to study his lessons.
When he arrived from Tagaytay after being declared national champion in the history quiz bee, his teachers made representations with the DepEd Division Office whose officials, in turn, requested then Dumaguete City Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo to install electrical wirings in the Flores abode for free. Only then, after more than six years, did the young boy genius enjoy the benefits of good, proper ventilation while doing his homework and studying his lessons.
His greatest motivation now is to help alleviate the family's way of life by pursuing a solid education for him to embark on a stable career.
"Both my parents come from really large families, but no one among my uncles and aunties finished college degrees. I also have many cousins, some with families of their own already. No one among them also finished a college education, although some of them are currently in school," Flores shares without batting an eyelash.
He is not embarrassed to say that his father finished up to second year high school and his mother finished up to Grade VI from the same school where he graduated. "My parents got married in their teens. They met each other in Manila while they were both working. I myself was born in Quezon City. I studied kindergarten there for about a month, then we moved back to Dumaguete because life was hard in Manila," he relates matter-of-factly.
Realizing early on that his parents' meager income from their odd jobs could hardly make both ends meet for the family, the young Flores would help augment the family coffers through the prize money he would take home in contests. His cash prize as Gawad Kalayaan sa Kabataan awardee went to their house's cement flooring. In the previous years, whatever money he would win would go directly to the simple improvements they would do on their house.
"Every time there would be contributions in school, like for projects or T-shirts, I am always the last to pay," he says.
Being a scholar of the Department of Science and Technology as well as an academic scholar at Silliman University, Flores still works hard to sustain his scholarship, rendering at least 80 hours per semester as a student assistant and, of course, maintaining the required quality point average. He wants to instill the same discipline and work ethic on his younger brother, Aldrin, who is still in the basic education level.
He was burning his midnight candles to hopefully arrive at his goal of getting the DOST-BPI Science Award when he gets to his senior year. He achieved his goal, he was one of the three Sillimanians who were awarded last February 2009. The honor entails a sizeable cash prize plus the assurance of no less than a managerial position after graduation.
"Just as I said in my high school valedictory address, poverty should not be a hindrance to one's dreams and ambitions. College life is our stepping-stone to making good. Always pray to God, stick to your goals, and don't let temptations get the better of you," he exhorts his fellow students.
On March 22, 2009, this young genius will march on graduation day, his dreams coming into reality because he worked hard for it. By then, I think Marvin Flores would have more stories to tell … like his being a lead vocalist in the rockband P6 and many more....

romantic_guy08 March 22nd, 2009, 09:28 AM hala, same ta! I was a supporter of Ina Reformina during my 1st year in college but after that, SURE na dayon ko, hehehe.
Hehehe...oh....SUSG politics...hehehe...
I've with SURE since I was in High School...ran with the party when I was in College...took over as repsentative for MassCom...now part of the elders of SURE and constantly supporting the party any way I can...hehehe...talk about political rivalry...whew...
Stacy is a good friend since high school...congrats Stace...proud of you and proud of MassCom... :okay:
Garthin Dumaguete March 22nd, 2009, 09:33 AM ^^ Haha.. you can say that again... and again, and then again.. and again. Wew. I only had been there once and that was on their opening rites which they served all their menu for free... Damn, good thing they served lechon or else i'd vomit all the food they had. Too much oil and spice. Even if they say all of the food are authentic Korean, the place really isn't. If they had made the plce look more Korean-ish, then probably it'll be fine... It looks more western na man gud.. But in fairness, my Korean students love their food. They always hang-out there and study. But somehow, in the long run, the lack of innovation and taste put them down. They should have also made it more taste-friendly to the locals. Bye Jumong!
Most of the Koreans I know don't like their food. They give a lot of rice, but only little veg. Koreans like a lot of veg and little rice.

I guess they will soon be having robots in their laboratories...
@nicko: ah ok, basta ako, i don't wanna disect a human cadaver again, their faces still give me goosebumps up to now, hehehe.
No human cadavers in the College of Nursing. We were exposed to the human cadavers in our human anatomy and physiology course.

tagaDgte March 22nd, 2009, 06:17 PM Yeah. Soon. The robot that the college will be purchasing will be the only kind in the country. Peejay knows more about it. He shared about this in the previous thread..
The robot you are taking about is called iStan. We are not the first school in the Philippines who will acquire iStan. Even West Negros University has one already.

tagaDgte March 22nd, 2009, 09:48 PM About iStan
http://www.meti.com/images/mast/istan_mast/bottom.jpg
This is the robot Silliman University will be purchasing...
The story of iStan is the story of METI — the tale of a spirit of innovation and collaboration that has no end. Take the passionate curiosity that brought patient simulation out of the dark ages of clunky task trainers. Then add the experience and sharp ideas of thousands of educators in the fields of medicine, nursing, disaster medicine, emergency response and the military. And you’ve got iStan.
At long last, here is the essential human element in patient simulation — the mannequin that moves, breathes, lives and dies so realistically and compellingly that medical education will never be the same. Developed with the United States Army, iStan is durable enough for combat and built for life. Couple that with METI’s guarantee, customer service and the Human Patient Simulation Network (HPSN) worldwide family of users, and you will know iStan is the soundest investment you can make in human patient simulation.

nicko March 23rd, 2009, 04:14 AM of course uy! an SUSG prexy who's a Summa Cum Laude? that's pretty tough gyud. Kudos to Stacey!^^
and to add other credits, Stacey was also crowned Ms. Silliman and had been in different kinds of national top 10 thingys.. hehe..

So you two must really know each other.........
nicko March 23rd, 2009, 04:23 AM Im the only one here who is with CAUSE diay.. Hehe
marlowe_cano March 23rd, 2009, 04:27 AM Basing on the Southern Gentry article above, although I'm not a Dumagueteño, I can say that Dumaguete is the most cultured place in the country. The attitude, professionalism, atmosphere, the sophistication is very much different from other places. A lot of my friends who are also non-Dumagueteños said. A tourist could easily notice that due to the small land area. One afternoon walk along the Rizal Boulevard is enough to differentiate Dumagueteños from the rest of the people. I'm really proud of this place and I love this city so much. ^^
same here, i'm from Zamboanga, but I love Dumaguete city.
nicko March 23rd, 2009, 04:32 AM I likeed how the graduation rites was done this year because last year, it was done in two separate days and in three different venues. Kapoy gyud it was kind of a hassle to many especially to those who are not from the city.

peejay202 March 23rd, 2009, 04:58 AM ^^ happy ka au!! I'm very thankful for all the blessings that I've received.. PEro makalagot kay bitin ka au.. Magduty pa me this thursday.. Crap.. hehe..
nicko March 23rd, 2009, 05:09 AM Oh yeah.. haha. felt the same way, too...Happy.. Really happy but not much since i still had to think of how to go through with IP, completion of scrubs, review, PRC application, review, board exams, results........ But after all those, Murag, "whew, at last, i am FINALLY DONE being with the college!" Hahaha.. And that was the time i truly felt happy, the real, genuine one. hehe.
peejay202 March 23rd, 2009, 05:49 AM and to add other credits, Stacey was also crowned Ms. Silliman and had been in different kinds of national top 10 thingys.. hehe..
I'm impressed with stacy's achievements, yet di ko bilib the way she gets them.. One of her close friend and her adviser told me that she chooses her own teachers and "mo-hangyo" so that she could get high grades.. I hope dili mo friends.. hehe.. Her manipulation of the CAUSE party pissed off the elders.. "She's no people person" as quoted by one professor.. Futhermore, he said, "If she took difficult courses like nursing, engineering, or accountacy, I doubt she'll even be an honor student".
In contrast, idol ko si Marvin Flores.. He is really exceptional.. His father is a construction worker and his mother is a street vendor.. As quoted by Marvin during the seniors day, "I graduated without electricity at home, without computer, and uses only a 'lampara' for studying, yet I was able to make it". He helps her mother sell rejected mangos from their neighbors in the streets, that's why he's not embarrassed to call himself as a "street boy". In spare time, he does tutoring..
Although I'm happy of their achievements.. Each of them are unique individuals.. At least, we have 2 Summas, 18 magnas, and 73 cum laudes.. Kudos!!
nicko March 23rd, 2009, 06:13 AM Hmmm... Stacy's reading rba, peej.. ahah.. Anyway, I've been hearing about that man pod and since HS pa na si Stacey, there were stories circulating about her already esp about when she joined Ms. Silliman...... But anyhoots, CONGRATS again. Magna Cum Laude man daw ka!
peejay202 March 23rd, 2009, 06:26 AM ^^ Really.. Shucks, I better delete that post.. How do you do it anyway? haha!! :D Bitaw, I really used to idolize stacy (Imagine, a summa and sg prex? Usahay ra na mahitabo).. Pero one credible person changed my perception about her.. It happened to be that person used to be her teacher.. Marvin, on the other hand, is exceptionally intelligent.. Pero won't try to compare (as if I did not..haha :D) because both are deserving students in their unique ways..
Me, magna? hehe.. Dili oi.. summa lang.. Btw, the magnas from the college of nursing are Roland Rodriguez and Clint Garbanzos, all boys..hmmm
Bilib ko nimo nick if makabalo ka sa ako real name.. If you do, pangita-a nalang sa booklet if naka-apil ko honors.. hehe.. :D
nicko March 23rd, 2009, 06:33 AM ^^ Giminusan ka nako, peej? Dghan ko sources and i'll try to find out what ur real name is and i'll look for it in the booklet if i can get one.. But i think i know you since you were part of the cheering squad before, right?... I'm sure cum laude ka. Basta, mas idol nako si Marvin!!
peejay202 March 23rd, 2009, 06:39 AM ^^ Haha!!:D How did you know apil ko cheering? Apil sad ka? Yah, I know daghan ka og sources.. For sure makabalo jud ka.. :D
i think I saw you during Mr. & Ms. SEAO.. Tapad mo Jeason Consing right??
nicko March 23rd, 2009, 06:53 AM Uh, coz katong sa cheering, most of the squad were from our batch, sophomores.. unfrtunately, my name was picked so i had to join without any consent from me and it was sumthing i really hated at first but got the hang of it after a while.. And i think i was able to spot some guys not from our batch kay gamay raman gud mo ato... And i think naa ka ato, as far as i can remember.
And yeah, I was at Mr. and Ms SEAO with Mr. Consing..:)

ritche March 23rd, 2009, 09:50 AM same here, i'm from Zamboanga, but I love Dumaguete city.
I have been asking for answers why Dumaguete is different from the rest, and I say that the answer is its faith and the presence of educational institutions in the area which provided a gentler, warm and friendly atmosphere.

jsl_bxu1206 March 23rd, 2009, 07:17 PM Is it possible to choose your teachers? I also heard a lot of stories about the honor students during my time. I think it's always like that, if you're famous, achiever, top student, you always get rumors and criticisms, both postive and negative. Part of life, hehehe.:)
I'm impressed with stacy's achievements, yet di ko bilib the way she gets them..
Kudos!!
jsl_bxu1206 March 23rd, 2009, 07:31 PM During our time (2002), the graduation was held at the Luce Auditorium Lobby (which was the stage). The graduates were seated at the tennis court area (of course the court fence was rolled and removed). It was memorable coz "gatagay" mi while waiting for our turn. We were seated at the back portion so we had the luxury of time to do it just enough to have pinkish faces without smelling liquor, hahaha. When we turned our heads at the colleges sitting behind us (Eng'g and Law), they were also doing the same thing, hehehe. The hooded graduates were making tagay except for the Divinity and Graduate Schools. We didn't know if the ones in front of us were also doing the same. It was a crazy thing to do. Unforgettable. Hehehe.
I likeed how the graduation rites was done this year because last year, it was done in two separate days and in three different venues. Kapoy gyud it was kind of a hassle to many especially to those who are not from the city.
This was last year's............

^^ So, there will also be for Bohol? Are they going to have a Robs there, too? Or will it only be a Big R or a Sun Shop? If it's going to be a mall or a Big R, the cool! All major Visayan cities will have Robs!

Miguel March 24th, 2009, 07:21 AM I was not able to experience marching on a graduation.
Simply because I came in late. My booboo was that I thought it would start at 3 pm but actually it's 2 pm. I came in just as the Board of Trustees was about to enter. Hehe, I'm the youngest member of the distinguished Board at that time.
By the way, congrats peejay202!
peejay202 March 24th, 2009, 11:53 AM ^^ How i wished i can be "pasaway" for a moment.. hehe.. Thanx miguel..
This year's gradution rites is different from last year.. From a two-part ceremony, it was collapsed into one.. The venue (amphitheatre) is still the same in order to preserve the solemnity of the occasion. However, for this year, the students were seated in front of the stage.. According to Pres Malayang, the new scheme was made since they want the students to be the center of of the celebration..
It has been 25 years since Silliman had a summa cum laude.. For this year, we have two: Stacy Danika Alcantara and Marvin Flores..

Geez, how come we've never thought of that?.. Whew. That would have been really fun! But, naah, even if we had that in mind, i dont think it was possible for us to do so since we were all seated in the amphitheatre and cameras were everywhere and it was a live telecast through Sky Cable and Fil Products so we had to maintain our poise. Hehe. It was also impossible for us to do it inside the Luce because we were all on stage, much more inside the SU Church.. Crazy..

jsl_bxu1206 March 25th, 2009, 03:16 AM Dumaguete tops dengue cases in Negros Oriental
March 23, 2009
By EDMUND B. SESTOSO
The city after hugging headlines and meriting a polled editorial on the spate of unsolved killings topping other parts of the province, adding to the list is also being number one when it comes to dengue cases.
This was bared by the local office of the Department of Health in an interview with the members of the media.
In an interview, Dr. Socrates Villamor said that for the period from January to the first week of March this year, Dumaguete City got 81 cases followed by Tanjay with 32 cases, Sibulan 16 cases, Bais City and San Jose with 10 cases each.
Generally, according to the DOH head, there is a 12.6 percent decline compared to the same period last year but Dumaguete remains on the top list.
The DOH official said that they continue to monitor also cases even though it is now considered as “hot days” because there are still remaining incidents that is still reported by medical workers at the government owned Negros Oriental Provincial Hospital.
Meanwhile, health agency is also closely monitoring a suspected meningococcemia case after it had monitored one.
“This is still suspected because we have yet to wait the results of the examination conducted by health officials” he said.
He added that had considered it as one of the cases because of some rashes on the skin and the patient is having a mild fever.
The doctor identified the patient as a nine year old girl, but whose name and residence is being withheld for some other reasons.
But he said there is no reason to panic as the incident is controllable and if found positive has been detected early.

Annual ranking recognizes SPi's leadership as a Top 10 Best BPO Performer
Washington DC, March 17, 2009. SPi, a leading global provider of business process outsourcing solutions announced today that it has been recognized in the Global Services 100 Survey. SPi's rankings include a Top 10 rating in the Best Performing BPO Providers category and the number 2 position in the Leaders, Emerging Asian Markets category.
The Global Services 100 is a ranking of the world's top 100 innovative service providers across various BPO and IT sectors by Global Services and neoIT. In developing the ranking, third party and participant-provided data were collected and evaluated. Service providers are ranked across four major categories - operational excellence, human capital, service offerings, and client relationships.
Commenting on the latest rankings, Peter Maquera, President and CEO, SPi, stated, "This is the fifth year in a row that we have been awarded top rankings in the Global Services 100 Survey. We are delighted to have once again been recognized as a top-tier BPO provider. This ranking reflects the value we deliver to our clients through our continued investments in our people, processes and technology."
"We are also honored to have moved up the ranks to the number 2 spot in the Leaders, Emerging Asian Markets category. Our Asian operations span the Philippines, India and Vietnam and enable us to offer high quality, cost-effective services to our clients across the globe. As our clients' needs expand and we enter new markets, we will explore the possibility of setting up facilities in other Asian countries."

>I was told SPi is currently undergoing relocation of its Vietnam operation to the Philippines, specifically to Dumaguete. The Delivery Center here would be one of the centers that the company is developing to be one of its major sites, possibly even its Philippine headquarters, because of lower operating cost and proximity to other urban areas.

Wow. Where did you get this detailed blueprint of Robs Dumaguete? Do you have more in other parts of the mall? It really does have a resemblance of Ayalas Cebu's The Terraces, although a lot smaller. It will also have an outdoor escalator and i believe it connects directly to the Movieworld. Looks like it'll have a lot of stalls, which means lots of restaurants! I hope it will also have an entertainment area for outdoor concerts....
And btw, i passed by the site and the grand ala-MOA atrium is now forming and looks way much taller than the rest of the building....

So does this mean SPi will soon have two operations here in the province? One in Bacong and soon here in the city? That would be really nice! Now that Teletech's 4-year contract with the city has ended, there will now be a rush of BPO investors to come, especially big companies....... Really looking forward!!

You could not imagine my surprise when I traipsed over to Lee Super Plaza today just to buy diapers when I noticed a brand new display on the side of where the frozen goods were located. Haagen-Dazs!! I hurried to the diaper section, plucked out what I wanted to buy, and went straight to the display case that boasted of its yummy goods. *yummy* Hah! I wanted to buy one on the spot!
What is Haagen-Dazs? Well, Haagen-Dasz is a popular brand of ice cream from the United States. It was founded by a Polish immigrants right around 1961. Although many mistake Haagen-Dazs as ice cream founded in a country other than America, the company actually opened its first store in Brooklyn, New York. How American could that get? It’s initial flavors include: chocolate, coffee, and vanilla, and to date, the company produces ice cream, frozen yogurt, sorbet, and ice cream bars.
I think I first tasted Haagen-Dazs when I was much younger, but I cannot remember exactly how it managed to reach Dumaguete. Now I could be wrong, but I do not think I have seen Haagen-Dazs being sold in Dumaguete prior to today. I am a certified ice cream lover and I must say that I have wished for this brand of ice cream to come over our end.
The timing of Haagen-Dazs first appearance in Dumaguete could not be any better. With the blistering heat and the temperature simply unbearable, surely people would be really find a reason to taste Haagen-Dazs, especially if they have not yet tried it.
However, I must express my dismay regarding the prices. I honestly would have bought one right away when I saw it, but it took a lot of courage for me to step away from the display case. The prices are as follows: Php. 185.00 (small cup), Php. 501.00 (500ml tub), Php. 268.00 (or somewhere thereabouts for ice cream bars).
Good thing I checked the prices first or I would have made a huge error! There is no way I am going to pay for THAT much for ice cream! Well, maybe later when I have extra cash to burn. I mean, geez! for the tub of ice cream I gather I could purchase two half gallons of ice cream from Selecta, or perhaps 44 pieces of ice cream sticks (whatever they are called) from Selecta still.
My heart still aches. I want Haagen-Dazs.
Somebody buy me even the small one? Teehee…

Teletech, as far as i know, pays the under-training group up to 9K and when you become an employee, it's going to be a different story already. Benefits i know include transpo and meal allowances, sack of rice, etc.. Those who are in the higher position can get as high as 25k..
Student Universe starting pay is about 15k.. It can get higher..
SPi Tech can gives employees as high as 15k, too.. Some get lower depending on the position.

jsl_bxu1206 March 28th, 2009, 06:00 AM Going beyond Dumaguete
by Lito Cinco
Manila Standard Today - Mar 25, 2009
Dumaguete City in Negros Oriental is known as The City of Gentle People and with good reason.
I have made several trips to this city and it does live up to its reputation. The locals are indeed friendly and very helpful to visitors. Many foreigners who have only come to visit ended up living here.
Dumaguete is known as the educational center of the Visayas with institutions Silliman University, St. Paul University, Foundation University, and the Negros Oriental State University at the forefront.
Silliman U, founded in 1901, is the oldest American Protestant school in Asia and the first university outside of Manila, St. Paul was the very first St. Paul school in the country and was founded by the sisters of St. Paul de Chartres in 1904. Along the city’s famous Rizal Boulevard by the sea, there is a monument depicting the arrival in Dumaguete of the sisters of St. Paul, but then you don’t really go to a place just to see old schools.
One of the very popular landmarks in the city is Rizal Boulevard, which is considered the city’s show window. This is a 780-meter-long walkway along the bay which ends near Silliman. An al fresco eating area features the local version of tempuras while across the street are hotels, bars, and restaurants. But do not expect to eat native delicacies like puto maya and budbod kabog there as the best place to do so is the food area of the city market or small coffee shops around town.
For many, Dumaguete is the gateway to some of the province’s other attractions, such as Siquijor and Apo Islands, a protected marine sanctuary.
By land, one also has a lot of choices and this writer was supposed to go to Bais, take a boat for whale and dolphin watching along Tanon Strait, which separates Negros from Cebu, only to find out it was the wrong season for that.
An hour and a half away will bring you to Manjuyod, where the now-it’s- there-now-it’s-not pure white sand island is located in the middle of Bais Bay. Swim, snorkel and scuba dive there, just make sure you still have an island to go back to as the sandbar sometimes disappears during high tide.
For people who prefer mountains and lakes, it is best to go to the twin lakes of Balinsasayao and Danao in San Jose, and commune with nature. Balanan Lake in Siaton, which is just over an hour away, is another place to go to for a quiet place to relax while the more daring can try spelunking in Mabinay, around 87 kilometers away from Dumaguete.
But one has to make a choice among all these places and for this writer, that was Valencia, located up in the Talinis Mountain area but just next to Dumaguete. Easy to reach, the place is high enough that the weather is cool. For an overnight stay, the best place is Forest Camp, a mountain resort offering very good lodging places and natural pools as the place makes use of a natural stream as the source of water for the pools.
The owner of the resort, Teng Florante, fell in love with the place and decided to build this mountain resort and has slowly been adding more and more features. From Forest Camp, one can make arrangements to see Casaroro Falls, a 90-foot high waterfalls in Barangay Apolong and actually the third of a series of waterfalls in Banica River, which in turn snakes though the Cuernos de Negros ranges.
This writer, accompanied by guides from the tourism and investment office of Valencia, went down a 335-step man-made staircase to Casaroro Falls, named after a man called Roro, who lived in the area a long time ago and used to bring friends from the city to this natural attraction. Casaroro can actually be translated to Roro’s place.
The trek to the falls was worth it as the sights and the accompanying sound of the cascading waters while in the midst of nature is certainly a relaxing experience, never mind that once done with viewing the falls, you need to go up the 335 steps to reach the starting point for the trek.
There is also a war museum that houses thousands and thousands of World War II memorabilia including weapons like Japanese rifles and machine guns, mortars and defuses man-sized 1000-pound bombs. If owner-collector Felix Cataal is there, he can tell you some interesting stories about the collection.
You may run out of time while in Dumaguete but you will not run out of places to visit, and I will surely be back one of these days.

jsl_bxu1206 March 28th, 2009, 06:01 AM 'Special trips' for trash collection in Dumaguete
March 25, 2009, 5:13pm
Dumaguete City (PNA) — The General Services Office in Dumaguete City said it has organized a "special trip" for barangays that are unable to collect biodegradables due to a lack of dumps.
The assurance was made by GSO chief Paul Honculada during the regular session of the city council Tuesday (March 24) following the complaints raised by city taxpayers about uncollected garbage in some streets in Dumaguete.
He said the situation is temporary in order to give time to the barangays to produce their material recovery facilities and composting areas as provided under the integrated solid waste management law.
Environment and Natural Resources Officer Rolly Clamonte, meanwhile, refuses to bend backward, saying they have to move forward and implement provisions of the law, meaning only residual wastes shall be collected and brought to the garbage dump in Candau-ay.
In fact, he said, since March 1 this year, it has seen great improvements in garbage collection in the city.
This is contrary to observations of taxpayers that uncollected garbage are found in some streets.
More than 8,500 athletes and officials from the Visayas are in Dumaguete for the national sports games.
March is also graduation month when parents of graduates from the Visayas and Mindanao will be in Dumaguete.

jsl_bxu1206 March 28th, 2009, 06:01 AM DTI lines up free skills trainings in Dumaguete
By Rachelle M. Nessia
Dumaguete City (26 March) -- The unemployed or those simply seeking an alternative source of income in these times of economic slump will benefit from the series of free skills trainings lined up by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) here.
Local DTI Senior Trade and Industry Development Specialist Maribel Sumanoy disclosed that DTI is slated to conduct a series of skills trainings every first, second and third Tuesdays of every month until June 2009.
"These trainings are for free and open to all who are interested in learning a new skill that they can turn into a livelihood," said Sumanoy.
DTI's move to hold free skills trainings came in the heels of the successful Comprehensive Livelihood and Emergency Employment Program (CLEEP) caravan held March 17 at Bethel Guesthouse.
More than a hundred people turned out for the caravan, most of whom were self-employed, fresh graduates and families of OFWs.
"From that activity we discovered that there are still many in Negros Oriental who are seeking other avenues to acquire new skills and options so they can have an alternative source of income," stressed Sumanoy.
With this, Sumanoy is encouraging families of OFWs, or even displaced OFWs who had to head back to Negros Oriental, unemployed and fresh graduates to attend the free skills trainings. "Even those who are already employed like government employees and who would like an alternative source of income are welcome to attend," said Sumanoy. (PIA)

jsl_bxu1206 March 28th, 2009, 06:02 AM Dumaguete confab on policy budget, legislative held
by Rachelle M. Nessia
Dumaguete City (26 March) -- The Social Policy and Local Development component of the Sixth Country Program of Children (CPC-6) held a one-day seminar on policy budget and legislative for the ten disparity barangays identified under CPC-6 in the province.
Provincial Planning and Development Officer Joy Gongob, during the seminar, discussed the process on budgeting and planning before the participants composed of planning officers, barangay captains, CPC-6 municipal coordinators, council chairpersons of the women and children's committees, etc.
The seminar stressed the importance on crafting plans and proper budgeting for government programs and its effective implementation in the barangays.
It also tackled the various problems encountered in the approval and implementation of projects at the barangay level.
The participants likewise shared their insights and views so they can come up with effective programs in relation to CPC-6 for implementation at their respective areas.
A separate training-seminar is also being eyed to specifically tackle budgeting procedures and issues. (PIA)

The Vintage Inn might well be the best value in Dumaguete for budget travelers. They’re located across the street from the public market where the multi-cabs wait to take passengers to the pier.
The room at left is a family room for 6 persons and has a base rate of 1,232 pesos per night. Always ask for discounts anywhere you go in the Philippines. Sometimes they are given for multiple night stays, seniors, or they might have a promo special going on. It doesn’t hurt to ask.

Wow....but I guess what we are paying for is the transportation costs, as HD is not manufactured in the Phlippines, like Nestles or Coke. Can you imagine Coke costing 200pesos per 2l bottle? It could, if it was imported...

nicko March 30th, 2009, 11:52 AM Re SM: Last night, my dad told me that last week, the guys from SM personally visited him in his office. First, the bad news: SM is not pushing through with their lot in Mangnao area. So, we can't expect them to release any official press release about their soon-to-be mall in that place anymore. Why? (Now, the good part) because they think that the area just is too small for them!! That's why they consulted my dad and asked any information and help because they want a 20 hectare land! Now, how's that, huh?... My dad, fortunately, knows many areas for them. He gave many but SM eyed on the one in Junob owned by the Martinez clan since it's 20 hectares and it's near Robinsons, their main mall competitor here in the city... Although, they are also checking on other areas, too. So the location can change. So, therefore, SM does really want to invest here in the city and it's going to be a BIG-time investment! 20 hectares is pretty huge for a mall. Maybe they are also going to put a business park or something.
Re ROBINSONS: For another good news..:) My dad shared the SM story with his colleagues during a party we attended last night and I was fortunate enough to sit with them and one of them is going to have a stall in Robinsons. He said that there are currently 5 contractors simultaneously working on the mall. One is producing about 200,000 hollow blocks. Robs is going to open within 6 months. If it's going to be impossible for the whole mall to open, then the supermarket will open first.

jsl_bxu1206 March 30th, 2009, 06:10 PM 600 vice mayors to attend congress on environment
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE
Monday, March 30, 2009
More than 600 vice mayors from Regions 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 will attend an island-wide congress on the theme “Addressing Global Warming through Local Legislation,” that will tackle environmental issues, in Dumaguete City, May 7-9.
Mabinay Vice Mayor Janggo Uy, who heads the Vice Mayors’ League of Negros Oriental, said the congress will emphasize the protection and preservation of the environment with guests from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, and some presidentiables.
Uy said the presiding officers from the five participant regions want to know the stand of the DENR and presidential aspirants regarding environmental issues.
The congress also expects to promote the tourism potentials of Negros Oriental, and will include tree-planting, tour of several attractions such as the caves of Mabinay and the white sand beaches, and other activities.*JG

jsl_bxu1206 March 30th, 2009, 06:11 PM Schools join Earth Hour observance
BY RENE GENOVE
Monday, March 30, 2009
Six schools in Dumaguete City joined the call for action on global warming by switching their lights off for an hour, 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. Saturday, to campaign against greenhouse effect and the need to address other environment concerns.
Before switching off the lights, the group gathered at the Quezon Park to participate in the event called “Pagpakabana! A Pre-EarthHour 2009 Activity.”
Organizers lectured on climate change, solid waste management, and presented a documentation of the Dumaguete flooding last month.
The six schools who committed to put off power in their campuses for an hour were the Asian College of Science and Technology, Colegio de Santa Catalina deAlexandria, Foundation University, Negros Oriental State University, St. Paul University and Silliman University.
Organizer said political will has to be established in executing programs related to solid waste management, segregation, energy and water resource conservation, and adoption of environment-friendly alternatives to plastics.
Meanwhile, the local Department of Environment and Natural Resources, local government units including households, also joined the Earth Hour.
DENR officer-in-charge Charlie Fabre said employees of the Southern Negros Geothermal Production Field in Palinpinon, Negros Oriental also responded to the global call.
SNGPF is one of the five geothermal project sites of Energy Development Corporation that has actively campaigned and promoted the Earth Hour event among its employees, host communities, local government units, local media and other stakeholders.*RG

The Japanese Art of Dining
The Sushi Bar of Casablanca is one of the authentic Sushi Bars in Dumaguete. All staff has been trained and supervised by a Japanese chef.
Wheter you are already a Sushi-Fan or want to try it, the Casablanca Sushi-Bar is the ideal place for this culinary experience in Dumaguete.
The small Casablanca Sushi-Guide
The word "Sushi" refers to vinegared rice, but generally, the term is used to describe a finger-sized piece of raw or cooked fish on a small amount of seasoned rice. This style of Sushi is called Nigiri. Sushi also refers to cut rolls and handrolls. All of these types of Sushi can be eaten as is, or you can dip the fish-side down into Shoyu (Japanese soy sauce) first.
Maki rolls are formed with the help of a bamboo mat and are generally wrapped in Nori.
Nori are dried and pressed layer sheets of seaweed or algae
Sashimi is raw fish served sliced. Whatever is served as Sashimi or in sashimi-style is usually served with Wasabi on the side.
Wasabi is a typical Japanese root similar in taste to horseradish. Use sparingly if you're not used to the "strong bite" this ground-up root has to offer! It's ok to mix a little in with your Shoyu.
Shoyu is the Japanese version of soysauce and made from soybeans, roasted grain, water and salt. Shoyu is widely used in East and Southeast Asian cuisines and with each Sushi and Sashimi dish.
The creations of the Casablanca Suhi Bar are prepared after your order and you can watch the staff preparing it fresh. All dishes can be ordered in the Restaurant or for take out.

All indications are that they are going to open by November-December. The precast method that they are using could actually hasten the construction process provided there are no interruptions in the pier area. Better yet, they could use a private pier in the Bacong area and they could be given priority when unloading the precast materials for the mall.
Re SM: Last night, my dad told me that last week, the guys from SM personally visited him in his office. First, the bad news: SM is not pushing through with their lot in Mangnao area. Just as I said before, the Mangnao area is too small if SM is to compete seriously, and getting there would be quite complicated. Now a very reliable person (he is one of the deans of Silliman after all) told me about his lawyer friends arranging the deal for a land near Silliman Heights (at least 10 hectares, and the Martinez Air Estate is near Silliman Heights and it's the only large chunk of land in the area). I guess one of the conditions for the establishment of SM in that area is the completion of the Diversion Road (superhighway) from Bacong to Sibulan, which could be done in about two years provided there is funding and all the landowners affected would give in to the construction of the superhighway.

DUMAGUETE CITY, April 1 (PNA) – The local government of Tanjay City in Negros Oriental is crafting an incentive ordinance to entice more investments and provide for job opportunities to the people.
Vice Mayor Nilo Tam disclosed that one of the areas being looked into is the probability of foregoing certain business permit fees.
He cited the case of Taguig and Malabon where penalties for real estate taxes are waived.
Tam said the city council is in the finishing touches of approving the Tanjay City investment code, which will also complement the incentive program, the bottom line of which is job generation.
According to the vice mayor, one of the biggest concerns in Tanjay City is the swelling of job orders, not to mention the fact that there are fresh graduates seeking employment.
Tam admits there’s a lot of work to do in the remaining months, adding that he is equally frustrated with the present predicament.
He considers the reduction of job orders as the biggest indicator for their accomplishment, which he believes is only above 50 percent.
Meanwhile, Tanjay City marks its 8th charter anniversary on April 1st with fitting activities that will culminate with the “Parangal sa mga Tanjayanons” at the end of May this year.
Vice Mayor Tam is hoping 2nd district Rep. George P. Arnaiz will be able to convince President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to grace the turnover of a newly constructed bridge linking the town proper barangay to San Isidro in Tanjay. (PNA)

romantic_guy08 April 1st, 2009, 12:19 PM no more airphil? how about zest air and PAL express? are they planning to fly to and from DGT?
2P operations have been taken over by main brand PR na...so I dont think they will resume flights to Dumaguete pa...2P operations are now limited and some major routes have been taken over by PR...
As for PR Express, I dont think they will mount a CEB-DGT-CEB flight...I for one think that this will not be successful and profitable....
I believe man gud na its not practical to take plane going to Cebu...even with the promo fares offered by 5J, it still costs much...taxi to and from Mactan, terminal fee...that doesnt include pa the delays that can happen especially with 5J's track record for delayed flights....
nicko April 1st, 2009, 12:24 PM So, coco amigos will close? effective when? good thing, though, that it will not go down the drain as someone will be taking over..... i hope it'll go much better!

nicko April 4th, 2009, 06:35 AM Dgte Science High Students To Compete In World Contest
Buglas News Central
A high school experiment on the cancer-curing properties of a certain variety of red algae has won three students from the Ramon Teves Pastor Dumaguete Science High School the chance to represent the Philippines in the International Science and Engineering Fair in Reno, Nevada, USA on May 10 to 16.
The three students – Kin Israel R. Notarte, Karina Louise dela Cruz and Jamie Mananquil – qualified for the international competition by winning second place in the Life Science Team Category in the Intel Philippines National Science Fair held Feb. 23 to 27 at the Subic Bay Exhibit & Convention Center in Subic in Zambales.
This is the second time for Dumaguete Science High to send a contestant to the International Science & Engineering Fair, said Yvette Gamora, project adviser.
In 1999, fourth-year student Karen Sobere Yu won first prize in the said contest and the Intel Fellows Outstanding Achievement for Vision and Innovation on her project bioplas production of biodegradable plastics, at the Pennsylvania Convention Center.
Notarte said their contest entry was their science investigatory project. The group tested the variety of red algae called Portierial hornemannii and applied it on animal cells using sea urchin embryos.
Applying the fundamentals of research learned from their teacher Ferrera Oira, and with the help of scientists from the Silliman University Angelo King Center for Research & Environmental Management, the high school students gathered a type of sea urchin known as Tripneustes gratilla, locally called salawaki and applied the red algae.
Injecting potassium chloride on the sea urchin specimens to induce spawning and harvest their gametes and applying extracts of the red algae on them, the students discovered that the sea urchin system is possible of identifying and classifying mitotic inhibitors, or chemicals that could prevent the regeneration of growth cells.

Silliman Medical Center Foundation, Inc.
announces the opening of the first
Laser Eye Center
in the island of Negros.
Manned by US-trained doctors, SMC's Laser Eye Center now treats eye problems such as glaucoma, cataract and other retinal eye problems.
Although SMC 's Eye Laser Center doesn't yet perform LASIK, LASEK or PRK operations, these medical processes are being discussed and SMC may soon be performing these high end operations.

ritche April 5th, 2009, 05:38 AM ^^ first in the province or in the whole island?...
I think Bacolod doesn't have an eye center. I posted it here and I was waiting for objections, but as far as what I have known, this is the first in the island and we are probably only the fourth area in the Philippines after Manila, Cebu and Davao to have this laser eye facilities.
nicko April 5th, 2009, 05:47 AM ^^ Oh yeah? wow. i never thought that Laser Eye Tech isnt very common here in the country.... Good.. Good.. Kudos to SMC Admin! I hope they can get more of those high-tech sepcialization facilities!.. What's next??..... Can't wait!
The city hospital will open within the quarter
Holy Child Hospital's new annex building will add new patient's rooms that is said to rival that of SMC's MAB's patient's rooms... The hospital is also fine-tuning their laparascopic surgery facilities, one of the first to have this kind of technology in the country, which started in the early 90's where there is no need to make big and ugly incisions to explore the insides of the patient, but using only fiber-optic video cameras inserted to the body with very minimal incisions and a one-day hospital confinement..... Their laparascopic surgeries can be seen by the significant others of the patient through live telecast to the patient's room or through the view of the public, of course with the patient's consent.
NOPH's 70M new building to start this quarter and it's MRI machine will soon serve the public!
Health Care and it's finest here in the city!!! Truly can soon become one of the best retirement's havens in the country!

Feeble quake jolts Dumaguete
Updated April 05, 2009 02:04 PM
MANILA, Philippines (Xinhua) - An earthquake measuring 4.5 on the Richter's scale jolted Dumaguete this morning, the United States Geological Service reported.
The quake was recorded at 3:11 local time (1911 GMT) at a depth of 35.0 km below the sea level, with the epicenter at 115 km west of Dumaguete, Negros, or 585 km south southeast
of Manila, according to the report. No casualty or damage has been reported.
Another quake, measuring 6.3, hit the southern region of the country yesterday afternoon.
The Philippines is regularly hit by earthquakes, and most of them are low in magnitude and cause little damage.
The country is part of the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, a string of islands on the Pacific Ocean rim that were formed by the eruptions of undersea volcanoes.

jsl_bxu1206 April 6th, 2009, 01:43 PM Negros Oriental has 9 new lawyers
BY MARICAR ARANAS
Monday, April 6, 2009
Nine graduates from Foundation University and Silliman University in Dumaguete City passed the 2008 bar examinations given by the Supreme Court in Manila in September last year.
Judge Eleuterio Chiu, dean of the FU College of Law and Jurisprudence, identified the three new lawyers from the school as Mary Jaynard Dionisio, Harold Jumuad and Karen Lisette Molas, who came from a group of 17 examinees, giving FU a passing average of 19 percent.
Dean Myles Nicolas Bejar of the Silliman University College of Law named six of their graduates as among the country’s 1,310 new lawyers — Florence Ed Obial, Elton Dick Abrea, Felix Araulla, Annie Rose Labine, Cheryl Bueno, and Randy Nocete.
Bejar, however, said they are still trying to determine the exact number of SU graduates who took the bar examinations before they could come up with their passing average.
The bar examinations is regarded as the most prestigious government examination in the country.
For the second straight year, the Supreme Court en banc decided to adjust the passing rate, from 75 percent to 72.5 percent this year, and from 75 percent to 70 percent in 2007.
Justice Dante Tinga, the chair of the 2008 bar examinations committee said the number of passers would have been lower if the passing rate had not been adjusted to 72.5 percent.
The 1,310 who made it represented 20.58 percent of the 6,364 who took the four-Sundays tests in September 2008.*AP
