Took some pics just this afternoon. I really think November will do. I actually saw that the hallways / bridgeways (however you call that inside a mall) is already done including the railings.. Very very spacious! You can actually just SEE INSIDE the mall through the entrance the one fronting Teletech.

A passing pedicab was ran over by a falling acacia tree towards noon today near St Paul's killing instantly one of its passengers. Tsk, tsk. I'm really sad. That means that we have to check acacia trees around the city to see if they haven't been eaten by termites yet.

By the way, there are plenty of acacia trees inside the supposed-to-be SM site, some of them may have to go away, or SM might landscape the area very nicely with towering palm trees....

There will be more direct trips to Mindanao and other Visayan cities, some of which will be served by fastcrafts. Our pier and our waterfront will perhaps become an attraction in itself in days to come. Dumaguete life will become exciting with colors and more flavors!

Dumaguete-Cebu is currently served by Ocean Jet, and Cebu Pacific by air. Walang problema sa land transportation merong hourly trips (sometimes even three times an hour) by bus or van from 2 AM until 10PM. Trip from Dumaguete to cebu takes around 4 to 5 hours by land, 30 minutes by plane, and 2 hours if direct and fast craft. Supercat used to serve Dumaguete-Cebu three years ago, but currently they are not serving the route.

Wala na palang Cebu-Dumaguete route ang Supercat ngayon? Why?

Primarily due to the high cost of maintenance and high oil prices...the old Supercats (jumbo cats) where fitted with water jet propulsion system that were fuel hungry... plus the then emerging competition from Ceres buses running Dumaguete-Cebu...a one-way trip on Supercat before costs 4x that of Ceres buses for almost the same amount of time...

Supercats are now fitted regular propeller system, making it less fuel hungry...

Yeah.. And there is a recent news release that CHED is currently revising the parameters in judging the country's best univs... So that can't be CHED's.

Hello guys...I want to share this article taken from wikipedia for Dumaguete City...where, Convergys and SM was mentioned and soon to open a branch here in our city.

ECONOMY

Dumaguete is becoming one of the most economically vibrant cities in the country in recent years, thanks to the influence of various anchor industries which drive the City's and neighboring areas' economies. These industries include the business process outsourcing, retirement, retail, and a host of other industries.

Dumaguete's growing outsourcing industry is vastly diversified with services ranging from call centers, publishing, medical transcription, animation, editing, architectural outsourcing, etc. Dumaguete has TeleTech, one of the world's largest call center firms, and SPi, one of the world's leading BPO companies, among its two largest ITES firms. The US-based StudentUniverse Corp. operates its first overseas contact center in the city, and Ventus, SPi's sister call center company under ePLDT, also established a call center facility here recently. Aside from these multinational BPO giants, there are other smaller BPO corporations and local outsourcing outfits operating in the city and nearby areas. Other giant multinational BPOs such as Convergys, as well as local corporations, are expected to establish their sites soon.

Robinsons Land Corporation, a major mall operator in the Philippines, will open 2010 a new mall located on a 6-hectare lot in Calindagan, south of downtown Dumaguete and inside the Dumaguete Business and IT Park. The latter is a 21 hectare complex being developed in Brgy. Calindagan, masterplanned by the Palafox Associates. Now becoming the new center of commerce in Dumaguete, it is expected to soon overtake the present downtown area in terms of economic activities and prominence. Not to be outdone, SM Prime will open 2012 SM City Dumaguete on a 7-hectare lot in the heart of this university town.

There is also an upsurge in the number of tourists arriving in the City of Dumaguete and nearby areas.

The academe pumps in more than P2 billion of economic activity into the city annually.

‘New call centers
boosting economy’
BY RENE GENOVE

Fil-Chinese Chamber of Commerce Inc. president Alex Sy said he expects a boost in the local economy with the opening of new businesses, especially call centers, in the province.

Sy said new businesses such as call centers are a big boost to local businesses because these are employment-generating companies. They will hire workers, and this will increase the buying power of local consumers, he said in an interview.

ePLDT Ventus, the new call center to open soon in Dumaguete City, had earlier announced that they are eyeing to hire 500 workers initially with plans to increase its workforce to up to 10,000 when it expands its customer base to include foreign companies.

Sy also said he expects an increase in sales in the province with the opening of Robinson’s Department Store before the year-end.

He, however, reminded businessmen to always issue receipts. “I always campaign with businessmen that the government needs money from the taxes we pay. If we don’t help them, what incentives can they give back to the people?” he asked.*RG

Silliman OnAir is a radio program that brings to the hearts and minds of the people the mission of Silliman University in providing total campus and community learning in Building Competence, Character and Faith. NOTE: The original DYSR (Silliman Radio) on the AM band was the first campus radio station of the country and was established in 1950 by the Radio and Audio Visual Mission Committee of the National Council of Churches in the USA. It was temporarily closed during the Martial Law Era together with its parent Silliman University (as one of of only 3 universities who holds that distinction) because of its stance against the Marcos regime.

"For those who do not know, “Dumaguete Tonight” with me as
original anchor, was a pre-Martial Law public affairs program
over the original DYSR –AM inside Silliman campus, the NCCP
Church council being the franchise holder until today.
When Marcos decared Martial law on Sept. 21, DYSR refused
to shut down.
Instead, this DT anchor invited the constabulary commander
to answer questions and yes, criticisms against Martial Law.
The constabulary commander then, Col Noli Santua, obliged
to be our last guest before DYSR shut down at 12 midnight the
following day, Sept 22. Nobody arrested us. The rest is history."

Progress on the Dumaguete Diversion Highway

Cementing the top of the culvert.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2589/3817063412_62c2bc1f9d_m.jpg

Taken from the south side, on the future diversion road. This pic should give a perspective of the size of the road. At the end of the seeble road in this pic, is the culvert still being constructed.

I think once this portion of the diversion road is finished, it will psychologically help the government to see the rest of the budget come in.

I think one forumer here, mentioned that SM was looking for 20has in Talay (probably the Martinez' land), which would be right along this diversion road.

I don't believe it will be long before Dumaguete becomes an HUC. You can guarantee, once this road is finished (even before), companies will be putting up bodegas where they can distribute through the island, simply because of location. I know already, that Ceres has been planning ahead with reroutes.

With four universities, unya apil pa sa top 10 universities sa Pinas ang usa ka university...with the upcoming Robinson's and the thriving BPO industry, progressive na gud ang Dumaguete.

Dumaguete collects over P2M in delinquent taxes

Dumaguete City (14 August) -- The city government here has posted a collection of more than P2 million from delinquent taxpayers after resorting to legal action.

Officer in Charge of the City Treasurer's Office Cristina Merced disclosed that about 50 delinquent taxpayers here had to pay their obligations otherwise their properties will be auctioned.

Since the city's tax collection campaign in 2007, Merced pegged the city government's collection at more than P2.5 million from real estate owners who failed to pay their real estate taxes.

Individual unpaid real property taxes from 1998 to 2007 range from P20,000 to P500,000.

Merced said her office started to publish the names of the 50 delinquent taxpayers in 2007 in preparation for public auction.

Of the total, 45 had to either pay their obligation in full or entered into a compromise agreement to pay their obligations in installment basis.

The city treasurer's office was about to conduct a public action on July 30 but the remaining five delinquent taxpayers opted to pay their obligations.

Merced said her office is set to soon publish in local newspapers the names of 50 more delinquent taxpayers as a requirement for public auction. (PIA)

There is none as of the moment... But there is a new one just nearby the boulevard.. Hotel Nicanor which is the tallest Hotel in the city now and i think there is a room there that would give you a good view of the boulevard. I don't know if there could be space for a new hotel at the boulevard unless convert one of the buildings there to become one since the area is already full..

Hahay, shanty towns are sprouting in various parts of the city. I guess these are people from outside the city and hoping to get economic opportunities here. Is this a sign of progress? I hope the city government deals with this problem the soonest time.

Stop reclamation
project, CENRO says
BY MARICAR ARANAS

Community Environment and Natural Resources Officer, Mario Aragon, recommended to the members of the Dumaguete Sanguniang Panglungsod that they stop the construction of the reclamation project because it does not have a permit and other documents required.

The reclamation project is located beside the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Office in Barangay Calindagan, Dumaguete City.

Aragon said the project is illegal, because a reclamation project requires an Environmental Compliance Certificate and a permit from the Philippine Reclamation Authority.

A barangay resolution should also be submitted to the Sanguniang Bayan for review. The project should also be submitted to the City Planning and Development Office for review and approval, he said.

Aragon said these steps in applying for a permit for reclamation should be followed because those are needed to ensure that no one is displaced and environmental concerns are addressed.

Also, fishermen who own motorized boats in the area should also be considered and provided with a relocation site as mooring area for their motorized boats, he added.

A representative of the City Engineers Office also disclosed that the Calindagan Barangay Council submitted the proposed reclamation project but it was disapproved because of discrepancies and irregularities.

Barangay Captain Antonio Carinio, who was invited to explain the project during the regular session of the City Council Thursday, said the barangay council approved the reclamation project because it will protect the residents along the beach area from big waves.

Councilor Antonio Remollo said that, although the project has good intentions, it should carefully follow the prescribed requirements under the law.

Councilor Allan Cordova said the city government will help the Calindagan barangay council find ways to solve the problem.*

Edith L. Tiempo
National Artist for Literature

Foundress of Silliman National Writers Workshop
"The pioneer and oldest creative writing workshop in Asia"

On Edith Lopez Tiempo
By Lakambini A. Sitoy
Originally published in Woman Today, 15 March 2000

Edith Lopez Tiempo was declared a National Artist in December of 1999, a fitting culmination to a lifetime of words, of nurturance and of creativity. Born 22 April 1919 in Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya, Tiempo, poet, fiction writer, teacher, wife, mother, spent most of her childhood and early adolescence in Manila, Surigao and Samar. She was quite a beauty, and at age 18, ventured into the movies. But her show biz career was shortlived: her family did not approve. Just as well Philippine literature in English would have been very different otherwise.

That same year, 1937, she began a correspondence with Edilberto K. Tiempo, a writer teaching in Maasin, Leyte, whom she finally met the following year through her eldest sister. They married in 1940 the start of a fruitful partnership that would last a lifetime.

The couple moved to Silliman University, in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental, a school that had been founded by American missionaries and was at the time one of the best in the country. They had two children, Rowena, now a professor of English at the University of Iowa, and Danny.

Edith’s education was interrupted by the war years, but in 1947 she did graduate, magna cum laude, from Silliman. She and her husband joined the school’s faculty. In succeeding years they traveled to the United States to further their education, Edith earning an MA from the University of Iowa and a PhD from the University of Denver, prestigious schools then as now for the study of literature. She taught at Wartburg College in Iowa, 1964- 1965, Western Michigan University, 1965- 1966, and Chinese University of Hong Kong and Hong Kong Baptist College, 1978- 1979.

Edith’s life career has involved two fields teaching and writing. Her poetry and fiction had seen publication as early as 1939; throughout the Fifties and Sixties, she continued to write and be published, in the Philippines and abroad, earning recognition for beautifully crafted work that sought the abstract and metaphysical in things as everyday as coaxing violets to grow. Edith’s body of work would probably have been enough to earn her the National Artist Award she received in December last year, but it has been her role as co-director (with her late husband; Ed Tiempo passed away in September 1996) of the National Writers Workshop, which they founded in 1962, that has made her an indispensable part of the Philippine literary scene.

After retirement from classroom instruction, she says, I concentrated, very happily, on writing. It is in this latter field where my late husband and I were privileged to help our young writers for over 30 years, and I continue to do so through the National Writers Workshop, which is now in its 47th year of operation.

Tiempo has won several awards from the Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature: Tracts of Babylon and Other Poems, first prize, poetry in English, 1967; “The Black Monkey,” third prize, 1951, and “The Dam,” second prize, 1955, both in the short story in English category. Her novel, His Native Coast, won the grand prize in the CCP Literary Contest in 1978, while her short stories “Chamber of the Sea,” 1955, and “The Dimensions of Fear,” 1959, both won first prizes in the Philippine Free Press literary contest. She was a recipient of the Elizabeth Luce Moore Distinguished Asian Professor Award in 1978, L.T. Ruiz Professional Chair in English, 1981- 1989, and with her husband, the Gawad Pambansang Alagad ni Balagtas Award from the Unyon ng mga Manunulat sa Pilipinas (UMPIL), 1988. She was conferred National Artist for Literature in 1999.

Writers' haven - Silliman National Writers Workshop

Some 47 years ago, before the Tiempo workshop was founded, there was no way for a budding writer to hone his or her skills or meet up with others similarly inclined. Creative writing talent was either buried in diaries or underwent prosaic transformations in language-dependent fields like journalism or law. Literary studies prepared young people for teaching careers or contributed to the battery of accomplishments expected of young women before they could be married off.

My experience as a teacher of English and literature showed me the need for developing a more properly comprehending reader-audience; the National Writers Workshop, together with the classroom teaching, worked to that goal, Tiempo says, by way of explaining her career choices.

Shipping anywhere from 12 to 20 workshop fellows and panelists (usually senior writers and/or teachers) from all over the country to Silliman University in Dumaguete City, housing and feeding them for three weeks each summer, and conducting daily afternoon sessions, was no laughing matter. For the Writers Workshop, the main problem was funding, and still is, Tiempo says.

Even when the workshop was conducted under the auspices of Silliman University, the two Tiempos and their colleagues worked on a shoestring budget and constantly searched for money. When university administrators voted to drop funding in the early 1990s, the Tiempos were pleased to find it had supporters in the business world, particularly the College Assurance Plan conglomerate, as well as a number of government agencies, and the Creative Writing Foundation, set up by prominent workshop alumni.

Despite the decades-old movement for Tagalog-based Filipino to be accepted and used as the national language, the Tiempo workshops have always been conducted in English, the language of choice of Edith and her late husband. Initially, she reveals, the promulgation of Pilipino as the national language was a deterrent in the teaching of English and literature. Matters improved over the years as the academic system also improved the teaching procedures of Pilipino in the curriculum.

They had no problems finding writers who wanted to train in the Writers Workshop. There has always been an abundance of Fellowship applicants, even those from disparate fields like engineering, medicine, the seminary, the law (we have had two appellate Justices in the Workshops so far), and from related fields like humanities and the arts.

Dumaguete became home of the oldest (and still running) creative writing workshop in Asia, the Silliman National Writers Workshop, patterned after the Iowa workshop which Edilberto and Edith Tiempo attended in the 1930s. A list of fellows who have trained or paneled in the workshop is a proverbial Who's Who of Philippine letters -- from Kerima Polotan to Lakambini Sitoy, from Krip Yuson to Angelo Suarez, from Nick Joaquin to Conrado de Quiros.

Eddie S. Romero
National Artist for Film

Eddie Romero: A Genius in Philippine Cinema
By Pepper Marcelo

"I cannot separate being an artist from being me. It's an extension of what I am," says Eddie Romero, one of the true geniuses in Philippine cinema, whose bountiful filmmaking career has produced more than 70 films and 20 screenplays, many of which are widely regarded as classics.

Encompassing a variety of styles and genres, from lavish historical epics to low-budget horror movies, Romero has garnered a reputation of crafting high-quality mass entertainment. He is also one of the few directors to break through overseas and work in Hollywood, directing the likes of Jack Nicholson, Burgess Meredith ( Rocky ), and Pam Grier ( Jackie Brown ). Last year, he received the National Artist Award from the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), a fitting tribute for one of the greatest filmmakers this country has ever produced. "The problem before, is that they felt most of my life's work was American, and this is Filipino," he says. "I'm glad to get awards, it's very gratifying, but I don't put too much weight on it, because it's bad for you."

Edgar Sinco Romero was born in Dumaguete City on July 7, 1924. His initial ambition was not in the realm of cinema but in journalism and writing stories, contributing many pieces to the Philippines Free Press . So impressive was the quality of his work that he caught the attention of filmmaking legend Gerardo "Gerry" de Leon, who would direct such classics as the film adaptations of Jose Rizal's Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo , and in 1981, be named National Artist himself.

De Leon commissioned young Eddie to write a screenplay for him, though there was a slight hitch: Romero, then as now, had difficulty speaking and writing Tagalog. "He told me that was okay," Romero says. "He knew Filipino, he can translate the script." The first screenplay he wrote, Ang Maestra , became a box-office hit, thus beginning a successful partnership that would last several decades. What would have been Romero's first directorial project (at the tender age of 18), on a film entitled Margarita , would unfortunately be postponed due to the outbreak of war in the Pacific. For a short period, Romero abandoned movies, dabbling in writing and editing projects.

Upon his return to movies after the war, Romero was invited, once again by De Leon, to write screenplays. His first taste in directing came in a Sampaguita Pictures project entitled Mameng, Iniibig Kita , which he had to finish because De Leon was in the process of switching film studios. Finally, in 1947, he made his debut as a solo director, on a project called Ang Kamay ng Diyos , which led to him directing 14 more features for Sampaguita. After a brief detour in London, England (where his father served as ambassador), Romero came back and directed Ang Princesa at ang Pulubi , for which he was named Best Director at the first Maria Clara Awards.

During the late 50's, as the Philippine film studios collapsed due to loss of funds, Romero left Sampaguita Pictures and, along with mentor/partner Gerry de Leon, moved to Hollywood to work in American-Filipino co-productions. Their first foreign project was titled The Day of the Trumpet . Romero then teamed up with former American G.I. and aspiring movie mogul Kane W. Lynn to create Hemisphere Pictures, which produced and distributed various horror, war, and exploitation movies, most of which where shot in the Philippines and utilized the country's low-budget rates. Many of Hemisphere's releases, including The Blood Drinkers , The Brides of Blood Island , and Mad Doctor of Blood Island , have been released on DVD (and features new interviews with Romero himself). "Those are some of the worse pictures Gerry and I ever made," he says. "But they've become cult [films]. I don't understand, but I'm glad. I'm very gratified." Though dismissed as cheap imitations of their higher-budgeted, foreign counterparts, these films showcase Romero and De Leon's distinct, signature styles and have garnered a sizeable following both here and abroad. No less then celebrated American filmmaker Quentin Tarantino ( Pulp Fiction , Kill Bill ) lists Romero's "blaxploitation" flick Black Mama, White Mama , as an influence. Other films, such as Walls of Hell (a.k.a. Intramuros ) and Women in Cages , have been available on DVD for quite sometime.

Despite having a career abroad, Romero has always viewed himself as the consummate outsider. "I was never part of the Hollywood scene," he says. "I would walk into 20 th Century Fox, AIP (American International Pictures), or [producer] Roger Corman, with a project, with American partners. That left us free, more or less, to come up with whatever we wanted to do. Of course in keeping with what the market was looking for."

In the 1970's, the breakout of innovative filmmaking talents like Lino Brocka, Ishmael Bernal, and Mike de Leon signaled a new Golden Age for Philippine Cinema with their socially-relevant, critically-acclaimed works. Romero would return and contribute his own masterpiece to this illustrious era: Ganito Kami Noon, Paano Kayo Ngayon? , a sprawling historical epic, which details the country's struggles in establishing its cultural identity dating from the Revolution against Spain until the Philippine-American War, as seen through the eyes of a provincial young man. Unanimously celebrated by audiences and critics alike, Ganito Kami Noon was chosen as Best Picture of the Year by the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino, and was eventually cited as one of top ten films of that impressive decade. In 2002, it was selected as one of the best films of the past 30 years. Other notable film projects Romero directed in the wake of Ganito Kami Noon include Sinong Kapiling, Sinong Kasiping; Aguila ; and the P100-million Filipino-Chinese co-production Hari sa Hari, Lahi sa Lahi , a stunningly complex, historical period piece set during the 14 th century.

"I see myself as a story-teller, I just want to direct," Romero says, who, still going strong at 79, currently has a project in development. Unlike other filmmakers, Romero never found himself pigeonholed to one specific genre, making numerous classic films in an assortment of narrative categories. His philosophy is to simply create characters and craft stories that interest him and could entertain people, and to not be conscious of limitations. "My perception is that artists can do anything."

Silliman University is the only school in the South to produce 2 National Artists

Much has been said about the National Artist fiasco as certain personalities were controversially added by the President but what has been long overlooked is the discriminating selection process for the National Artists of the Philippines over the years. The selection has most of the time been a close knit connection of who's who on a certain geographic location. A cursory look on the list of National Artists would reveal that majority of these notables were mostly from Luzon and most have affiliations to the highly esteemed universities in Manila. The scope for the pool of nominees were limited unto who's making the impact on this urban community.

In Literature, is there a National Artist who specialized in Hiligaynon? None. In Bisaya? None. In Waray? None. How about those nightingales who sang romantic Cebuano songs? None. Were these artists long forgotten or just been totally ignored by Manila based art lovers/critics?

If I am not mistaken, of all those 64 National Artists only 5 have hailed from the South; Napoleon Abueva-Bohol, Leandro Locsin-Bacolod, Abdulmaria Asia Imao-Sulu, Edith Tiempo and Eddie Romero who are both from Dumaguete. The first 3 were schooled in Manila universities which makes only the last 2 as being locally educated. Eddie Romero made his impact on cinema in Manila and that makes Edith Tiempo as the only provincial based artist were she honed would-be writers at the first and oldest creative writing workshop of the country which she and her late husband Edilberto Tiempo had created.

I am not alluding that these National Artists are not deserving as they rightfully are but what I'm trying to point out is that there is a flaw in selecting the National Artists for a long time now, way before this Carlo Caparas fiasco, and it has been going on unnoticed or maybe just fall to deaf ears. I don't believe that this style of selecting will change in the coming years. These provincial based artists will still be again neglected and their contribution to the arts and culture will be lost in history books and be long forgotten by the future generation.

Capitol sets aside P6M for improvement of Neg. Or. Highway 2000 project (http://www.pna.gov.ph/index.php?idn=2&sid=&nid=2&rid=225462)

DUMAGUETE CITY, Aug. 21 (PNA) – The provincial government has allocated some P6 million in budget for the construction and rehabilitation of the Negros Oriental Highway 2000 project of Governor Emilio Macias II.

The construction of roads will traverse to at least seven barangays from Mabinay to La Libertad in central and northern Negros Oriental.

The Negros Oriental Highway development will also pass through the municipalities of Manjuyod, Bindoy, Ayungon, Tayasan and Jimalalud.

Capitol Information Officer Adrian Sedillo said the P4 million will come from the Kilos Asenso program of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo while the province allocated a counterpart fund of P2 million.

The amount will be used for cementing and rehabilitation of some existing and dilapidated access roads in the mountain barangays of the province, Sedillo said.

The Negros Oriental Highway 2000 is one of the pet projects of Macias when he was first elected as governor of Negros Oriental several decades ago before he served in Congress.

The road project aims to provide an alternative highway for the farmers and transport businesses and also provide easy access to different towns and cities through the mountain barangays.

Farmers will also have opportunity to bring their farm produce to the markets and sell these at a higher price.

Governor Macias also believes that opening of road networks will help reduce the insurgency problem of the province.

Meanwhile, another P5.7 million is allocated for the construction of the Balanan-Managubsob-Cantiban-Canggabok road that will connect the mountain barangays of Siaton to the municipality of Santa Catalina.
The Kilos Asenso program of President Arroyo has allocated some P3.8 million for the said project with a counterpart fund of P1.9 million from the provincial government. (PNA)

Hi!

How much is the Ceres bus going to Dumaguete from Bacolod and back? Any idea kung 24 by 7 ang biyahe ba nila?

Thanks!:)

hi fraulein, i think no one is interested in giving you answer about your query so i thought i should answer it for you...

Ceres Bus from Bacolod to Dumaguete:

1st TRIP Non-Aircon - 3AM
1st TRIP AirCon - 5:20AM

after the 1st TRIP Aircon, succeeding trips to dumaguete will be every 45Minutes...

The Next Aircon Trip you can get is 12Noon and 5PM

Last Trip from Bacolod to Dumaguete is 7PM

Non-Aircon Buses charges 230 from Bacolod to Dumaguete
Aircon Buses charges 270 from Bacolod to Dumaguete

Travel will usually took about 6Hours... but during these times, it can take up to 8 hours as there is an on-going repair of roads from Upper Mabinay down to Bais and Tanjay Cities up to Amlan and San Jose-Sibulan...

As to the Hotels, I recommend Obdullias and Check Inn for their affordable (i prefer not to say cheap) room rates.. Services are quiet good and its also near the boulevard...

Accomodation Rates for Obdullias is Php 799.00 and Php 850.00 for Check Inn both for double single beds room... Free DSL Connection in Check Inn (thats why we orefer to stay there every now and then) and Php 100 for the DSL Connector Rental at Obdullias (but the Hotel is new)... WIFI? dont have any idea though...

I guess the third level will be used as training center for hirees while awaiting for the completion of their building. Did you notice the posters around town? On the other hand it could be used as another production area. Let's wait and see what happens.

Then what will happen to the existing tenants currently occupying the third and fourth levels? And what about the posters around town? As of the moment, i don't see any clear indications that CVG will really be coming if we base it sa posters around town.. Or maybe wala ra gyud ko naka kita.... Two More Bpos To Open In Dumaguete
Written by July 26-August 1, 2009-Metro Post

Two new business processing outsourcing companies (BPOs) will open its doors further boosting the vibrant IT industry in the province.

Department of Trade and Industry Provincial Director Javier Fortunato said ePLDT Ventus and Smart Communications are the newest BPOs in town.

Major IT companies have set up operations in the province following DTI’s promotion of Negros Oriental as an IT designation in the country.

“Several hundred new jobs have been generated, small businesses are sprouting to cater to the needs of company employees, the industry has formed its very own industry association-the ICT Dgte-and we can say that the IT industry is vastly contributing to the development of our community.’ said fortunate in a statement.

Fortunato estimates that the BPOs and call centers in Dumaguete pump in more than P20 million a month to the Dumaguete economy through the salaries if its 2000 workers alone. “That figure is just based on the assumption that the entry level pay is P10,000 a month. And there’s the multiplier effect of three, meaning for every IT job, this will create three more indirect jobs,” Fortunato said.

Fred Dael, one of the prime movers in the development of IT industry in Dumaguete, even went on to say that the multiplier effect for IT jobs could be as much as 16. He said one advantage of call centers and other IT-based jobs is that it keeps the family together. “They also spend their money locally so the money does not go out of Dumaguete,” he said.

There already are at least nine BPOs or IT-based firms operating in Dumaguete City and Negros Oriental. These are the Teletech Holdings Corp., SPI Technologies, Student Universe, Tri Edge Resources, Inc., Entheos IT Corp., Nestwood Computer Development Services, IT Outlook, Bayantel Communications and Innove Communications.

Dean Sinco, proprietor of Entheos IT, which currently employs 30 workers doing animation, web design, computer programs and architecture outsourcing, said the prospects of expansion for this business is big. “If I am able to get other architects in Hawaii to do projects here, we can easily triple.”

Sinco, who works half of the year as an architect in Hawaii, said their only limitation, for the moment, is the composition of the talent pool. “Architecture takes a while for someone to be able to design and design in the way that is expected in the US. I didn’t get full reign of design until about six years of working. I was under the principal in the office at the start.”

Dael said that in addition to the fiber-optic network that goes all around Negros island, these IT-based firms exist in Dumaguete because the school infrastructure is in place. “People don’t want to come here. But Dumaguete, through its four universities, churns out its own work force. We don’t just have schools-we have quality schools. There is no other town our size with four universities,” he said, in reference to Dumaguete’s 120,000 population.

The City of Dumaguete been supportive of BPOs and other IT-based firms by giving a three-year tax incentives to the first-movers. The City Council, upon the instance of Councilor manuel Sagarbarria, who is also president of the Negros Oreintal Chamber of Commerce and Industry, also passed a resolution acknowledging the efforts of Dael, Sinco, Fortunato, Bert Bravo and Veneeth Iyengar for the development of the IT industry in the City.

It would be good to know that it is easy to form a Dumaguete management team because of the fact that there are plenty of managers and supervisors at CVG who are from Dumaguete/Silliman and they could just be pulled out to organize the Dumaguete site.

I hope CVG Dumaguete, if organized, would be more non voice. I could actually attest that non-voice interaction is better than voice because of the fact that you could easily take note of the interactions, and less stressful.

Hmmm, my radar says that there is another callcenter wanting to establish a site here aside from the two new ones that are coming in. Hmm, checking my crystal ball for any development. Dumadami, dumadami. Checking, checking.

But me personally thinks the two new ones are enough as of this time.

Relocation packages are offered if the hiring is anchored by a hiring agency. JobsUp, who usually hosts hiring for call centers outside the city are the ones that offer the packages. But then that hiring is not handled by an agency so i think that is the reason why there is no relocation packages being offered. So, I think that that is a direct hiring from the company itself. I think CVG Cebu.

nicko
August 24th, 2009, 02:36 PM
True. Why don't they just have their own call center here rather than absorbing our people to work for them in another area. Hiring from different BPO companies outside the city take place here every month. Imagine how many of our talented pool of people has been absorbed to work and spend in another city Our people's hard earned money should just be spent and circulated here..

A HOMEGROWN Mexican-inspired restaurant chain is eyeing a total of 10 outlets in the country before the end of the year.

Mooon Café, now owned and managed by Pages Holdings Inc., just opened its fourth company-owned outlet last Aug. 12 at Parkmall, Mandaue City.

The company is scheduled to open a fifth company-owned outlet in November this year at Robinsons Cybergate Cebu in Fuente Osmeńa, Cebu City.

Yesterday, the first franchise outlet of Mooon Café opened in Cagayan de Oro City.

Franchised outlets are expected to open at the Grand Gaisano Mall Mactan in October, at Robinsons Mall Dumaguete City in November, at SM North Edsa in Quezon City in November and one in Davao City within the year.

“Having ten outlets by the end of the year is (achievable),” said Bunny Pages, chairman of Pages Holdings Inc.

The company bought Mooon Café from its original owners two years ago for about P700,000, invested P3 million for the renovation of the original branch located in Guadalupe, and reopened it in June 2007.

Pages Holdings executive vice president John Pages said their expansion experience with one of their businesses, Thirsty Juices and Shakes, has prepared them for the expansion of Mooon Café.

Growth factors

Bunny attributed the growth of the company’s first restaurant venture to their good food, affordable pricing and ambiance.

Young professionals and families continue to flock to the restaurant chain that is being managed by Charlie Pages.

John said the outlets’ strategic location is one factor in the success of the business.

The second branch opened at The Walk, at Asiatown IT (information technology) Park in June 2008 and third at The Terraces in Ayala Center Cebu in December last year.

The company invested at least P4 million for its fourth outlet at Parkmall, where it occupies 130 square meters. The outlet is designed with a capacity of 100 persons.

Pages Holdings continues to receive inquiries from potential franchises who want to open outlets in Manila where the challenge lies in “getting the right location” with plenty of foot traffic, Bunny said.

The company contracted RK Franchise Consultancy to help organize the restaurant’s franchising system.

Mooon Café’s franchise fee in Luzon is P1 million and P800,000 in the Visayas and Mindanao. Return on investment for franchise outlets is estimated to be 16 months.

Bunny disclosed that the company is open to franchisees who want to put up Mooon Café outlets outside the Philippines through a licensing scheme.

Apart from Thirsty and Mooon Café, Pages Holdings Inc. also owns and operates Playhouse Children’s Center, My Playroom Kids Care Center and Bright Academy.

It also acquired a 50-percent stake in Taters Snack League Cebu. It plans to open a second Taters outlet in Cebu at SM IMAX Theater in November.
