This is a three event show featuring the Foam Party, the Launderette Fashion Show & 2 DJs stint from Great Britain..
The “Sneak” Foam Party is a social event in which participants dance to music on a dance floor covered in several feet of suds or bubbles dispensed from a foam machine. For safety reasons, the foam is generated from non-toxic, non-staining, hypo-allergenic solutions.
Participants may wear bathing suits or beach attire, snorkeling goggles, sunglasses, and shower caps. Many participants arrive fully clothed, and some then partially disrobe as the party progresses, while others remain fully clothed.
Generally, foam parties occur at nightclubs, dance clubs, or private parties.
While the “Launderette” Fashion Show will feature Cebu’s finest swimwear & undergarment designers Dexter Alazas & Sal Malto, with Dumaguete’s own Venorica’s Closet Collections. This event segment will be participated by models from Russia, Neatherlands, Mr. Cebu finalists, & other cebu and manila top models in Pan Arts Fashion Accessories. (GEA Events)

jsl_bxu1206 August 26th, 2009, 08:31 PM I'm just curious. Are these landmarks named after dead people?
I know Dr. Roman Yap is dead. How about Dr. Alcala and the others? Is Ravello referring to the husband of Prof. Nora Ravello? or the father of KK Ravello?
new names for silliman landmarks:
SC110 - Babor Lecture Hall
Biology museum - The Gonzalez Museum of Natural History
Silliman Soccer Field - The Ravello Physical Education Field

jsl_bxu1206 August 27th, 2009, 06:17 PM Happy birthday, Silliman University! - Leonor Magtolis Briones
08/24/2009 12:34 AM
On August 28, Silliman University will celebrate its 108th birthday in Dumaguete City. On that day, all roads will lead to its beautiful campus by the sea. Loyal alumni, former students and faculty will come by plane, boat, bus, jeep and by foot. The earliest to arrive are usually alumni and their families from abroad.
Even now, class reunions are held simultaneously all over the campus. The high school classes are usually the most active. The high school class of 1949 counts itself among the most loyal. Colleges also hold homecoming events for their returning alumni.
Alumni associations all over the country and abroad usually have their own celebrations earlier so that they can join the big day in Dumaguete.
Two weeks of non-stop celebrations. The celebration officially started on August 16. Every day, the calendar of activities has to be revised to accommodate numerous lectures, anniversaries, concerts, contests and alumni parties.
Homecoming alumni like me go home for the events which are part of our Silliman memories—the cheering contest, the selection of Miss Silliman University, the University concert, the parade, and of course, the Founders Day service. They also come to give lectures in their fields of interest
The celebrations reach fever pitch on August 28 with the Sunrise Service at 5:30 a.m. when the university community gathers to give thanks for the life of this great university. To make sure that everyone gets up in time, the university band goes around the campus and plays rousing music. Those who have just returned from parties and celebrations the night before have to drag themselves out of bed, looking like sleepwalkers. By the time this century-old traditional service is over, everyone is awake, ready to share breakfast and start celebrating again.
The rites for the awards for outstanding Silliman alumni are also held on August 28. They are recognized not for riches or for material success but by the simple standards of Silliman’s motto: Via, Veritas, Vita—the way, the truth and the life. This refers to the path an alumnus chooses and undertakes in his or her life’s journey, adherence to the truth, and the life he or she leads as a Christian.
The annual Parada Sillimaniana is unique in that the entire city joins in the celebration. A veritable contest of bands and majorettes usually happens when all the other school and university bands, as well as rondallas from the barangays participate. For over six hours, the community is treated to a cornucopia of sights, colors, costumes and sounds.
The day is capped with the glittering alumni night dinner and fireworks. It ends with the singing of the Silliman Song. Tears are shed as alumni bid goodbye and promise to return the next year.
Liwas Founders Day. With such intense celebrations in two packed weeks, it is indeed very difficult to suddenly grind to a halt and go back to classes. The process of winding down is called liwas. August 29 is usually spent in serving the community. This is the time when free medical services are given, lectures and demonstrations on farming and fishery rendered, and a fair is held for the surrounding barangays, complete with bands, shows and a market for farm produce.
The Silliman Spirit. The most important and meaningful things in life defy definition. Alumni always talk about the “Silliman Spirit” which binds the Silliman family whether in the sophisticated jungles of New York, high places in Europe or missions of service in the remotest areas of the country.
Alumni make sure their children also go to the university. Thus, families can have four generations of Sillimanians in their clan. My father went to Silliman. His great grandchildren are also in the university.
When I was a child, there was no question that I would go to Silliman. It took incredible sacrifice for my parents, both school teachers without property, to send six of their eight children to the university. I walked to school in hand-me-downs. When I was in my junior year I started working as bookkeeper in a book store. My mother took boarders to augment her meagre salary.
It was in Silliman that I learned that all men and women are equal, regardless of status. I did not suffer discrimination. I never felt inferior or insecure because we were taught that we were all God’s children. As a matter of fact I hardly felt poor with my second hand clothes and worn shoes. It just did not matter in a university where academic excellence and Christian virtues were more important than wealth or station in life.
Happy birthday, beloved Silliman, from your former Chairman of the Board of Trustees.

jsl_bxu1206 August 27th, 2009, 06:21 PM 4 more villages in Negros Oriental to benefit from gov't infra projects
by Rachelle M. Nessia
Dumaguete City (27 August) -- Four more villages in Negros Oriental are set to benefit from the infrastructure projects under the third batch of Kalayaan Barangay Projects program in the province.
Maj. Frederick Ancheta, information officer of the 53rd engineer brigade of the Philippine Army, disclosed that a total of 11 infrastructure projects will be constructed in three barangays in Siaton, Valencia and Sta. Catalina towns.
The third batch of KBP brings to 34 the total infrastructure projects for the province under said program.
The 53rd Engineer Brigade of the PA is undertaking the construction of the infra projects in the province.
According to Maj. Ancheta, the brigade has completed to date the construction of 11 of the 23 total infra projects slated for the 1st and 2nd batches of KBP program here.
The completed projects which have already been turned over to the barangay-beneficiaries are four school buildings in Sta. Catalina and Zamboanguita, four water system projects in Zamboanguita, Sta. Catalina and Pamplona, and two health centers and one farm-to-market road in Zamboanguita.
"There are seven ongoing projects, most of which are road projects, along with farm-to-market roads and water system, " said Maj. Ancheta during a recent Kapihan forum conducted by the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) here.
For KBP's 2009 coverage, four villages in the province have been included, namely: Brgys. Jantianon, Silab and Tambuhangin in Amlan and Brgy. Tubigon in Sibulan.
Ancheta said the list of projects to be implemented in said areas are still undergoing community needs assessment with the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace Process (OPAPP). "So once OPAPP submits the rapid needs assessment of these areas and are approved, we will implement the infra projects," he said.
All the projects implemented under KBP are part of the peace and development areas identified by OPAPP.
In Negros Oriental, said areas are composed of 9 municipalities totaling to 27 barangays.
KBP are government programs intended to transform conflict-affected communities into peace and development areas through accelerated barangay-focused rehabilitation and development programs. (PIA/RMN)

jsl_bxu1206 August 27th, 2009, 06:21 PM Negros Oriental gears up for 20th RP Travel Mart
Dumaguete City (27 August) -- The province of Negros Oriental will again join the 20th Philippine Travel Mart organized by the Philippine Tour Operators Association (PHILTOA) to promote purely inbound and domestic tourism.
Travel Mart is the biggest and most comprehensive annual exposition of Philippine travel, tourism and trade products and destinations in the country.
The Provincial Tourism Office is spearheading the province's participation to the Travel Mart at the Megatrade Halls of SM Megamall in Mandaluyong City on September 4 to 6, 2009.
Senior Tourism Operations Officer Myla Mae Abellana said the province's booth presentation will showcase the finest tourism goods and services that the province can offer to domestic and international visitors.
With the theme "Beyond the Usual Philippines, Experience IT Here!" the 20th PTM provides an exciting market for the unusual attractions of Negros Oriental, said Abellana.
The annual travel mart boasts of the biggest record of visitor traffic for tourism exposition, a good number of which are travel writers and foreign tour operators seeking fresh destinations to sell in their respective countries.
The Negros Oriental booth, part of the Region 7 section, will ensure the province's continued prominent presence in the Philippine tourism industry picture while boosting visitor influx to generate more economic activity in the province, said Abellana. (PIA)

Miguel August 28th, 2009, 03:58 AM This is probably an old performance by the Campus Choiristers at the Silliman Performs some years ago or if not maybe a reunion of sort. I could remember the soloist, Quddus Padilla, sang it at the Luce Auditorium during the late 90's. The same batch of SU Campus Choiristers that became the Philippines' Ambassadors of Goodwill and had a concert tour in the US. They also recorded 4 albums of various themes. The current director, Ian Caballes is also part of that group.
I could remember me and my friends really like this song "Ikaw Ang Lahat Sa Akin". There is a certain charm of the song that would send chills to your spine especially when being performed at the Luce Auditorium, they also sang it at the Macias Coliseum but it's just not the same. At the Luce, you could really feel the beauty of the song; it must be the acoustics, the dimmed lights, the cool atmosphere, the formality, the silence and attention of the audience, or just its total majestic air of grandeur.

romantic_guy08 August 28th, 2009, 07:31 PM I miss watching these kind of performances in Luce Auditorium. Libre, hahaha. Sa kilid lang hinuon pero okay na gihapon.

NO DOUBT. This was one of the biggest parties Dumaguete hosted last night. The crowd was overwhelming. Not just any crowd, it was a crowd of beautiful people. Mostly Sillimanians coming home for the last day of the founder's month celebration.. And even if the tickets were a bit expensive (500 & 300), it was jam packed to "sardine" level but it was still burning hot, fun, and wild!! People from Cebu and Bacolod also joined the Dumaguete party scene. It was also a scene of mixed nationalities, as usual... The whole stretch of the Escano Boulevard was full of cars and people boozing... Very memorable.. Whew!!!!
nicko August 29th, 2009, 04:43 AM ^^ Oh yeah, I almost forgot, party continues tonight with "The Ramp 3: The Last Stand".. Igat igat npod ni.. Hehehe..

And I was told they really acquired several multi-million laser apparatuses, not just as a referral center where they are supposed to bring their patients to Cebu. This is a stand alone clinic where they could perform state of the art laser operations similar to what they are doing in Cebu and Manila.

wise_zech September 2nd, 2009, 07:21 AM wow grabi hot na hot ung mga babae...
alainralph September 2nd, 2009, 09:20 AM NO DOUBT. Whew!!!!
thanks for posting this..i just found this thru google. im one of the organizers of X int'l fashion party

Syempre! it also will. Since time in memorial, Buglas (pre-colonial name of Negros) was known to be a place to relax and to enjoy for merchants of Panay and Sugbo.:banana::banana::banana::banana:
nicko September 2nd, 2009, 11:21 AM ^^ True, true.. The island of Negros and it's people simply loves to party and celebrate.. It dates back a few centuries ago where the hacienderos and hacienderas spend their money for parties and invite guests and VIPs from each other's side of the island.. I quote a gospel from Philippine Tatler and what PT has to say about the Negros' "high society" and their ever bonggacious parties..
Historically, Negros Oriental has a rich history of the burgis and the elite. The landed hacenderos of the island—which includes Negros Occidental—often keep track of each other, attend each other’s parties, and intermarry. They may have different “kingdoms”—the Bais-Tanjay-Dumaguete-Pamplona families, the Victorias-Cadiz-Sagay families, the Bayawan-Santa Catalina-Basay-Sipalay families, the Kabankalan-Ilog-Himamaylan families, the Canlaon-Guihulngan-Vallehermoso-San Carlos families, the Bacolod-La Carlota-Silay-Talisay families—but most are sugar barons welded together by common crop, a shared fortune, as well as accidents of history.
In the best of our old times, some Negrense girls used to make their debutantes balls at St. James Court in London. This glittering world is partly chronicled in the pages of Kabilin, the now-rare coffee table book of the province’s history, published when Negros Oriental turned a hundred years old in 1989....
And for that, perhaps it is best to quote the full text from Fitzgerald’s story “The Rich Boy”: “Let me tell you about the very rich. They are different from you and me. They possess and enjoy early, and it does something to them, makes them soft, where we are hard, cynical where we are trustful, in a way that, unless you were born rich, it is very difficult to understand.” That suits perfectly well the cycles of fortune of our local high society.
Simply put, this island just loves to party.. The party culture has been passed down from the people before who celebrated the bounty of the sugar boom that the island constantly experienced.. Even how expensive it can get, cge lang, because life's a partaaay!..:cheers:
jsl_bxu1206 September 2nd, 2009, 11:29 AM Tanjay takes steps to promote ‘bodbod’
BY ROMY AMARADO
Wednesday, September 2, 2009
The Tanjay City government is taking steps to promote its famous delicacy, “bodbod sa Tanjay” outside of Negros Oriental.
City Administrator Erke Lozarita told the DAILY STAR that the city government will construct a P1 million bodbod manufacturing center in the city for the purpose.
The idea, he said, is to improve the quality of the bodbod (sweetened rice wrapped in a banana leaf), and standardize its size and taste.
Lozarita said the Orient Foods and the Department of Trade and Industry are helping the city government in the endeavor.
He said the plan, with their help, is to improve the process of making the bodbod, improve its packaging and labeling and preserve its ethnicity and to have it marketed not only in Negros Oriental, but also outside the province.
Lozarita said the moment the project is realized it will help the economy of the city, especially those people who are dependent on making the delicacy for their livelihood for a long time already.*RA

jsl_bxu1206 September 3rd, 2009, 02:42 PM Dauin gets P7M waterworks help
BY MARICAR ARANAS
About P7 million worth of water work materials were given to Dauin town from the funds of Rep. Henry Pryde Teves (Neg. Or., 3rd District).
The water work project is composed of big polyethylene pipes to connect the water supply from the source and small polyethylene pipes for distribution to households.
Dauin Mayor Rodrigo Alanano said he is thankful for the water work project of Teves.
Alanano said water supply is a priority concern of the town since some of the barangays do not enjoy direct water supply to their households.

DUMAGUETE – Strong winds toppled a main power transmission tower in Negros Oriental causing a 17-hour power interruption in Dumaguete City and eight municipalities on Thursday.
The transmission line is located in Barangay Basiao in San Jose town and owned by the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).
Power was restored around 9 p.m. Thursday but after 15 minutes, the power went out again. Electricity became available again by 9:30 p.m.
Sonia Ruiz, transmission line engineer of the NGCP sub-station in Tandayag, Amlan, Negros Oriental, said the 69 KV structure in Basiao was already unstable before it finally gave in to strong winds.
She said they had discovered that the guy wires holding the two-pole structure had been snipped off by unknown persons earlier.
Only three of the original eight strands of guy wires kept the poles upright, rendering the structure unsound, Ruiz said.
NGCP maintenance crew worked the whole day to ferry on foot two replacement steel posts and other replacement parts to the hilltop tower site in Basiao as the area cannot be accessed by vehicles.
Ruiz said pilferage of their posts is very common as the people who steal them use the guy wires for makeshift fishing spears.
Affected by the power outage were Dumaguete City and the towns of Sibulan, San Jose, Amlan, Valencia, Bacong, Dauin, Zamboanguita and Siaton.
The Basiao transmission line supplies direct power to the Negros Oriental 2 Electric Cooperative and huge industries such as the Dumaguete Coconut Mills Inc. (Ducomi) and Orica Nitrates in Bacong town.(PNA/Sunnex)

Then after 9:30, the power goes off again at around 10pm until 1am.
So much for lesser brown outs once they replaced the Pulantubig's 10MVA to 20MVA sub-station. Yesterday was quite frustrating.

The numbers in red are the room numbers of the doctors. The numbers in white on a blue background are the priority numbers. Patients should periodically check their priority numbers, watch the screen and listen for the automated voice to call out the number on their print-outs.

shark8888 September 5th, 2009, 10:23 AM Resto eyes more outlets
SunStar Online
Monday, August 24, 2009
By Nancy R. Cudis
A HOMEGROWN Mexican-inspired restaurant chain is eyeing a total of 10 outlets in the country before the end of the year.
Mooon Café, now owned and managed by Pages Holdings Inc., just opened its fourth company-owned outlet last Aug. 12 at Parkmall, Mandaue City.
The company is scheduled to open a fifth company-owned outlet in November this year at Robinsons Cybergate Cebu in Fuente Osmeña, Cebu City.
Yesterday, the first franchise outlet of Mooon Café opened in Cagayan de Oro City.
Franchised outlets are expected to open at the Grand Gaisano Mall Mactan in October, at Robinsons Mall Dumaguete City in November, at SM North Edsa in Quezon City in November and one in Davao City within the year.
“Having ten outlets by the end of the year is (achievable),” said Bunny Pages, chairman of Pages Holdings Inc.
The company bought Mooon Café from its original owners two years ago for about P700,000, invested P3 million for the renovation of the original branch located in Guadalupe, and reopened it in June 2007.
Pages Holdings executive vice president John Pages said their expansion experience with one of their businesses, Thirsty Juices and Shakes, has prepared them for the expansion of Mooon Café.
Growth factors
Bunny attributed the growth of the company’s first restaurant venture to their good food, affordable pricing and ambiance.
Young professionals and families continue to flock to the restaurant chain that is being managed by Charlie Pages.
John said the outlets’ strategic location is one factor in the success of the business.
The second branch opened at The Walk, at Asiatown IT (information technology) Park in June 2008 and third at The Terraces in Ayala Center Cebu in December last year.
The company invested at least P4 million for its fourth outlet at Parkmall, where it occupies 130 square meters. The outlet is designed with a capacity of 100 persons.
Pages Holdings continues to receive inquiries from potential franchises who want to open outlets in Manila where the challenge lies in “getting the right location” with plenty of foot traffic, Bunny said.
The company contracted RK Franchise Consultancy to help organize the restaurant’s franchising system.
Mooon Café’s franchise fee in Luzon is P1 million and P800,000 in the Visayas and Mindanao. Return on investment for franchise outlets is estimated to be 16 months.
Bunny disclosed that the company is open to franchisees who want to put up Mooon Café outlets outside the Philippines through a licensing scheme.
Apart from Thirsty and Mooon Café, Pages Holdings Inc. also owns and operates Playhouse Children’s Center, My Playroom Kids Care Center and Bright Academy.
It also acquired a 50-percent stake in Taters Snack League Cebu. It plans to open a second Taters outlet in Cebu at SM IMAX Theater in November.

Wooooow!!!!!!!!!!! that's good news for dumaguete!!!!! there sisig and baby back ribs is to die for. Cant wait!!!!
ritche September 5th, 2009, 11:49 AM Got some info lately.
1. It seems the alfresco area at the back of Robinsons Mall will only be 1 level. I am not sure though if that is expandable vertically.
2. Gustavian of Cebu and Phino (is this spelling right), and some other Cebu-based restaurants might open at Robinsons.
ritche September 5th, 2009, 12:01 PM ^^But looking at its size now and its elegant make, I am quite contented. However, if they expand it and make it better, I would be elated.
ritche September 5th, 2009, 12:06 PM ^^Most of these Cebu-based restaurants that are to open at Robinsons are found at Ayala Cebu's Terraces.

The MAB ultra mod queuing system is akin to the flight arrival-departure monitors in airports, or to the now-serving numbers display in some banks. The numbers in red are the room numbers of the doctors. The numbers in white on a blue background are the priority numbers. Patients should periodically check their priority numbers, watch the screen and listen for the automated voice to call out the number on their print-outs.

September 3, 2009, 7:53pm
DUMAGUETE CITY (PNA) — Most if not all of the foreshore areas in Dauin town in Negros Oriental are now in the hands of foreigners engaged in the business of resorts and dive shops.
Dauin, which is some 12 kilometers north of Dumaguete, capital city of Negros Oriental province, is considered one of the best world-class dive destinations in the country.
A total of 14 foreigners reportedly own resorts and beaches in Dauin, some of them using dummies
as incorporators.
This was confirmed by Mayor Rodrigo Alanano who assured his constituents he will pursue efforts to collect taxes from said dummy-fronted businesses.
The mayor said he has reason to believe some of these resorts and dive shops are not paying the right taxes due Government.
He said these resorts earn millions of pesos, but not even a fourth of their gross income is declared.
The mayor disclosed that these resorts and dive shops buy tickets from the municipality at R200 per dive at the marine sanctuary and then turn around and sell these tickets for as much as R2,500 to dive enthusiasts.
From January to July this year, Dauin town had earnings of R6.5 million from dive tickets alone.
With data gathered in cooperation with the Bureau of Internal Revenue, Alanano said he will not stop and will not give up until these foreigners pay the right taxes.
Alanano said one foreigner engaged in resorts and dive shops is presently establishing an upland resort with a different name using dummies.

jsl_bxu1206 September 5th, 2009, 06:47 PM 17-hour blackout hits Dumaguete, 8 towns
BY JUDY F. PARTLOW
Friday, September 4, 2009
Dumaguete City and at least eight other towns in Negros Oriental suffered 17 hours of power interruption after a main power transmission line tower of the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines in Barangay Basiao in San Jose was toppled by strong winds at dawn Thursday.
Power was restored around 9 last night but after 15 minutes the power went out again.
Electricity became available again at 9:30 p.m.
Sonia Ruiz, transmission engineer of the NGCP sub-station in Tandayag, Amlan in Negros Oriental, said the 69 KV structure in Basiao was already unstable before it finally gave in to strong winds.
She said they had discovered that the guy wires holding the two-pole structure had been snipped off by unknown persons earlier.
Only three of the original eight strands of guy wires kept the poles upright, making the structure unsound, Ruiz said.
NGCP maintenance crew worked the whole day to ferry on foot two replacement steel posts to the hilltop tower site in Basiao as the area cannot be accessed by vehicles.
She said pilferage of their posts is very common as the suspects use the guy wires for makeshift fishing spears.
Affected by the power outage were Dumaguete City, Sibulan, San Jose, part of Amlan town up to Tandayag, Valencia, Bacong, Dauin, Zamboanguita and Siaton.
The Basiao transmission line supplies direct power to the Negros Oriental 2 Electric Cooperative and huge industries such as the Dumaguete Coconut Mills Inc. and Orica Nitrates in Bacong town.*JFP

BY JUANCHO GALLARDE
Friday, September 4, 2009
The Metropolitan District Health System which comprises the towns of Dauin, Bacong, Valencia, Dumaguete, Sibulan, San Jose and Amlan, is eyeing the Galing Pook Awards with 167 other best practices contenders from all over the country, MDHS outgoing district health officer Dr. Fidencio Aurelia said at turnover rites yesterday at the Negros Oriental Provincial Hospital compound.
Aurelia said that out of 168 entries, the list is trimmed down to 22 and he is confident that the entry of the province will make it to the top 10.
He stressed the need to sustain its gains in the past three to five years in delivering quality, integrated package of primary and secondary health care services, through active partnership and cooperation among participating LGUs, non-government organizations, peoples organizations and other sectors.
Incoming MDHS district health officer, Dr. Felix Sy, who is in charge of the whole district health system in the province and the provincial hospital, is enjoining the politicians to take care of the health of their constituents, and, in return, they will also take care of them during elections.
Mayor Agustin Perdices, who chairs the Metropolitan District Health System also stressed that the health of the people can never be taken for granted.
In fact, in Dumaguete, the health of the people like education is among the top priorities, especially in funding allocations.
The turnover was witnessed by Valencia Mayor Odol Gonzales and Dauin Mayor Rodrigo Alanano.*JG

NORECO nowadays is upgrading by adding more substations (and I heard including 1 substation for Robinsons) and replacing old rotten wooden poles with new all weather concrete poles. These upgrading should cause more brownouts. Howeve, NORECO must find a way to minimize brownouts.

Isn't there a pending bill in Congress for foreigners to own lands here? I am in favor of this ony if they bring investments and employment, even granting them Filipino citizenship (dual citizenship).

It's not just SMC that is boasting new state-of-the-art buildings and facilities. Holy Child Hospital is catching up, too. In fact, HCH's eye center is more than a notch higher than that of SMC's. HCH is expanding also but since it does not have any more enough land to put up more buildings, it's expanding vertically. The main building is now currently being added with another level.

jsl_bxu1206 September 8th, 2009, 10:17 AM Dauin: Still open to sanitary landfill
September 7, 2009
While environment conscious, the municipality of Dauin is not entirely closing its doors to the establishment of a sanitary landfill in Barangay Tunga-tunga provided that both the capital city and the provincial government will shoulder the cost of construction.
The vision of a sanitary landfill started during the incumbency of Governor now 2nd District Rep. George Arnaiz and is aimed at providing the towns of Sibulan, San Jose, Valencia, Bacong, Dauin, Zamboanguita and Dumaguete City environmentally acceptable ways to properly dispose tons of wastes daily.
But when Governor Emilio Macias II returned to the Capitol in 2007, Dauin Mayor Rodrigo Alanano was told that his top priority is the construction of more school buildings. True enough, while the city of Dumaguete and other LGUs expressed willingness to shell out its share of the cost, there was no allocation from the Capitol for the proposed sanitary landfill.
Nevertheless, Dumaguete City Mayor Agustin “Tuting” Perdices remains optimistic that the project will still be possible.
Meanwhile, in the absence of such facility, the city government has intensified its campaign for waste segregation and the establishment of a Material Recovery Facility or MRF for each of the 30 barangays.

jsl_bxu1206 September 8th, 2009, 10:19 AM NegOr town benefits from DSWD project
First Posted 10:54:00 09/08/2009
PASSENGER vehicle drivers, market vendors and small entrepreneurs in Bindoy town, Negros Oriental are now enjoying the benefits of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program or 4Ps of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).
“We are all thankful for the program because we are assured of full passenger load during the giving of cash assistance to 4P beneficiaries and all the jeepney drivers here at the terminal are able to meet their boundary before nightfall,” Raul Timagos, president of Bimbahoda Drivers Association in Bindoy, said.
During the payout of cash grants, the number of passengers will increase as beneficiaries take a jeepney or tricycle ride to and from the bank to claim their benefit.
The jeepney drivers are given priority numbers and divided into two groups, one in the morning and the other in the afternoon.
Fish and meat vendors also increased their sales during the payout of cash grant due to the increased buying power of the beneficiaries.
“(This is the first time I experienced selling two to three coolers of fish),” said Aling Nelfa in Cebuano, a 58-year-old fish vendor of more than 20 years.
The town’s bakeries have likewise gained from the program. Their usual sale of two sacks of flour per day have increased to three to four sacks.
The DSWD said that Bindoy residents were inspired to become small-time entrepreneurs as their stocks of paper pads, pencils, bags, uniforms, slippers and other school supplies often got sold out on the first weekend after the cash assistance payout.
Bindoy Mayor Valentin Yap lauded the program, saying 4Ps is a very good catalyst for local government units to create a social class formation.

Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental (10 September) -- The Metro Dumaguete Roadrunners Club (MDRC) is joining the people-powered movement for climate change organized by 350.org, an independence and non-profit project.
In line with said campaign, the club will launch "Count Your Run: Race for Trees" in September 2009 to support the global campaign at the local level.
The race will take runners from the starting line at the Calabnugan Bridge in Ocoy River, into coconut canopy and the breathtaking scenic, rugged dirt road of Balili Trail.
This will challenge participants to an out-and-back 3km, 5km and 10km uphill-downhill route in Brgy Balili northern part of Valencia Negros Oriental.
MDRC Events Coordinator Paultom Paras is inviting interested runners to participate in the eco-tourism outdoor appreciation towards preservation adventure run.
"We intend to conduct a series of adventure runs to raise 350 native trees this year to be planted and cared for by the people's organization in the area to stabilize the atmospheric CO2," he said.
Paras said they joined the international grassroots campaign to rally support for the global climate movement.
According to CO2Now.org, the world atmospheric CO2 for July 2009 is 387.81 parts per million (ppm) based on the world's most current data for atmospheric CO2 measurements at the Mauna Loa Observatory in Hawaii this August 10, 2009.
Global warming is the result of CO2 levels rising in the Earth's atmosphere, explained CO2Now.org, adding that both atmospheric CO2 and climate change are now accelerating.
"We have years, not decades, to stabilize CO2 and other greenhouse gases," the website stated.
For the past years, MDRC has been committed to pursuing its purpose in promoting Tourism, Health, Environment, Youth and for Peace (THEY for Peace).
The club continues its effort to link-up with local and the world to support a united voice in preserving the environment. "In recent years the number of institutions and organizations has risen to pressure lawmakers and administrators to implement equitable solutions to the climate crisis," said Paras.
For more information regarding the event and how to get involved in the global campaign, you may visit the website at www.dgterunners.com or contact Paras through ptyp2006@gmail.com. (PIA)

jsl_bxu1206 September 10th, 2009, 07:04 PM Globe eyes IT training for teachersBY JUDY F. PARTLOW
Thursday, September 10, 2009
An Information and Communications Technology training program for public school teachers in Negros Oriental is being considered by Globe Telecommunications.
The ICT-aided teaching program will complement the recent partnership inked by the company with 25 public high schools in the province, Jeffrey Tarayao, the company’s Corporate Communications chief, said.
During a recent visit here, it launched its program that provides these schools with free Internet access for one year, in cooperation with the different local government units that funded the needed structures such as computer units.
Tarayao said the ICT teacher training program will focus not just on the basics of computer use and the Internet but on platforms for subjects like Math, English and Science as well.
The Coalition for Better Education-Visayas is being eyed as a key player in the ICT-aided program for teachers but the partnership has yet to be forged, he added.
Twenty-five schools in Dumaguete will be the first to benefit from the program which can hopefully be launched before the year ends, said Tarayao.
Schools that are covered by the free Internet for Schools Program will be prioritized, he said. He added they are targeting public high schools as its beneficiaries to the ISP as ICT subjects are incorporated in their curriculum.
Of the 2,600 public high schools in the country that have Internet access, 950 of these are powered by Globe Telecom, he added.*JFP

nicko September 11th, 2009, 06:37 AM Iloilo, Bacolod identified as new wave cities
by T. Villavert
Iloilo City (10 September) -- The cities of Iloilo and Bacolod in Western Visayas has been identified as the new wave cities.
This was disclosed by Director Dominic Abad of the Department of Trade and Industry, Region VI during the PIA-CATV program, recently.
Director Abad explained that for Iloilo City is already an acknowledged fact that "we have several universities and colleges here, and producing thousands of graduates who will serve as our pool of dynamic workers".
Western Visayas is also a place that our investors go to, Abad said as he cited the vast potentials of the region, like its human resources, good infrastructure, connectivity and tourism industry.
Director Abad said that the IT –BPO is also growing and providing employment opportunities for the region.
The DTI 6 record showed that for IT-BPO call centers Iloilo City has 8; Bacolod- 8; Medical Transcription Services: Iloilo- 1; Bacolod –one.
This is in line with what President Arroyo disclosed during the 9th e-services Global Sourcing Conference and Exhibition that "our BPO industry continues to boom as global cost-cutting is sent to outsourcing. The Philippines is ranked among the most attractive off-shoring destinations in the world because of competitiveness and more importantly the country’s highly trainable, English proficient, IT-enabled quality manpower.
According to a Malacanang press report, President Arroyo’s Cyber Corridor in her super regions economic development plan has been "lengthened" from Metro Manila, Iloilo, Bacolod, Cebu and Davao to include Baguio, Dagupan, Tarlac, Pampanga, Metro Bulacan, Metro Rizal, Metro Cavite, Metro Laguna, Metro Batangas, Dumaguete and Cagayan de Oro. Garthin Dumaguete September 14th, 2009, 03:29 PM I wonder if they will be able to finish this road within two years. This will surely decongest Dumaguete's main streets and will help in creating new business districts.
When I went past earlier, they were also cutting down trees on the Talay side of the culvert. It looks like they are going to start widening the road going upto the Talay crossing at the main Valencia road.
Now the work is started, at least they beat the election ban of no more projects to be started.
I once asked Chiquitting, and he said that these funds have to come locally, and not from the mass of funds that is being used to cement the existing roads along the main highway.
Speaking of which, Bogo road is closed again, while they cement the remaining portion.
Going back to the diversion road though, there is something more solid happening now that it's being cemented. I remember being excited when Ipe Remollo tried to make Bajumpandan (near Habitat 2) a one stop stop for a new city hall and all offices. They excavated the mesh of roads needed, and looked really promising, but nothing happened after that.

nicko September 15th, 2009, 02:35 PM SANDOSENANG SAPATOS
http://www.arkipelagobooks.com/images/sandosenang_sapatos.jpg
Sandosenang Sapatos (A Dozen Pairs of Shoes), a Palanca award-winning story that has reaped numerous accolades in the Philippines and abroad and has touched the hearts of many, is now a musical staged by the Valenzuela City Center for Performing Arts (VCCPA) in cooperation with the Silliman University Cultural Affairs Committee.
Written by Palanca Hall of Famer Luis P. Gatmaitan, Sandosenang Sapatos tells the story of Karina and Susie. They are the daughters of the town’s best shoemaker, but only Karina gets to wear the beautiful shoes their father makes. Susie can never wear shoes because she was born without feet. Will her father and her family love her less? Soon, Susie is surprised by the discovery of her father’s incomparable love for her.
Sandosenang Sapatos celebrates the love and acceptance of a family in the face of adversity. Artistic Director Roeder Camañag says, “This is a story of hope grounded in reality. It’s something that will help fight the cynicism we see around us nowadays. It’s not a fairy tale. It’s fresh and relevant.”
Sandosenang Sapatos: The Musical stars veteran stage actor Luisito “Kuya Bodjie” Pascua, popular host of the 80s’ children’s TV show Batibot.
The musical begins with vivid imagery: a dozen luminescent dancing shoes on black The music is playful and bright, and lyrics are remarkably fresh and original. Heartrending melodies lined with poignant words underscore particularly moving scenes.
Author Luis Gatmaitan, also known as Tito Dok of the popular Mga Kwento ni Tito Dok series, is happy with the results. “Isang malaking karangalan para sa isang manunulat tulad ko ang makita ang nilikha mong kwento ay nagkaka-buhay sa entablado, na mula sa mga pahina ng libro ay naging isang musical. (It is a great honor for an author like me to see the story I’ve created come to life on stage, from the pages of a book to a musical.)”
Sandosenang Sapatos: The Musical is directed by Andre Tiangco, with music by Jesse Lucas and libretto by Jose Jeffrey Camañag, featuring Luisito “Kuya Bodjie” Pascua and the VCCPA Theater Group.

DUMAGUETE CITY – A plan linking all the provinces in Central Visayas through by a bridge has been revived during the Annual General Assembly of the Regional Development Council (RDC) 7 last Friday in this city.
Cebu City South District Rep. Antonio Cuenco, who attended the gathering in Dumaguete City said a bridge connecting Cebu and Negros Oriental would be the best way to improve the two island’s transport links and spur economic growth.
The proposed Cebu-Negros bridge is timely as authorities are gearing up for the feasibility study of the Cebu-Bohol Friendship Bridge which has already gained funding approval by the South Korean government.
“Cebu to Dumaguete is near. I propose that we put up a bridge linking the two islands as part of our project proposal to the national government,” said Cuenco.
This is not the first time that plans to link the Visayas islands have been discussed. The building of a bridge link between Barangay Bato, Samboan in Cebu and Tampi Wharf in Amlan town, Negros Oriental had already been proposed during the time of then Cebu Governor and Regional Development Council (RDC) Chair Emilio Osmeña. But Negros Oriental Gov. Emilio Macias II said while the plan was laudible, there are some factors that have to be addressed before such bridge can be constructed.
For one, Macias said, the sea current in Tanon Strait between Barangay Bato, Samboan in Cebu to Barangay Tampi in the town of Amlan, Negros Oriental is very strong and a Japanese contractor earlier invited to study the project said it was difficult to build a bridge over the area.
Also, the plan has not taken off due to the high cost — P7 billion at that time — involved in constructing the bridge.
Earlier, in the second RDC meeting held in Bohol, Gov. Enrico Aumentado sought the assistance of Public Works and Highways Secretary Hermogenes Ebdane Jr. with documentary requirements after the Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF) assured him that South Korea will fund the feasibility study on a bridge linking Cebu and Bohol.
Aumentado said the anchors of the bridge will be in Getafe town in Bohol and the municipality of Cordova in Cebu.
Passing through shallow waters between the two provinces, the bridge is estimated to be 18 kilometers long.
The Bohol-Cebu Multi-Access Friendship Bridge (BCMAFB) already has the endorsements of the Bohol Provincial Development Council (PDC) and the Central Visayas Regional Development Council and will need to be approved by the National Economic and Development Authority.
