ritche November 24th, 2009, 02:19 AM Robinsons shopping mall opens in Dumaguete City; mayor optimistic of more jobs for locals
November 24, 2009 2:41 am
DUMAGUETE CITY, Nov. 22 – Mayor Agustin Perdices on Monday lauded the opening of Robinsons Place, the first full-service shopping mall in Dumaguete, as he expressed hope it will not just boost the local economy but also provide more jobs for locals.
Robinsons Place Dumaguete is the 27th addition to a string of Robinsons shopping malls throughout the country and is the sixth in the Visayas region.
The two-level mall is located at the Dumaguete Business Park in Barangay Calindagan along the south national highway and spans a total gross floor area of over 40,000 square meters.
It offers a wide range of services from a variety of name-brand and local fashion and specialty shops, dining, leisure, a dynamic activity and entertainment area, a health and beauty zone, service and IT zone, among others.
Mayor Perdices expressed his gratitude to the Gokongwei family for their huge investments in setting up Robinsons Place in Dumaguete.
He lamented that it is sad to see young people of the city leave home to seek jobs overseas or in other areas outside of Dumaguete.
Perdices said he is looking forward to seeing more investors come to Dumaguete now that Robinsons has set the ball rolling.
Lance Gokongwei, president and chief executive officer of Robinsons Land Corporation said they are happy that Robinsons Mall in Dumaguete was finally inaugurated.
He said they are thankful to local government officials in Dumaguete who helped them in completing the requirements for the construction of the building.
Gokongwei said they are now studying the possibility of expanding the mall in the near future.
He added they have been considering the offer of putting up a hotel that would complement the demand for tourist accommodation following the rise in the number of visitors to Dumaguete and Negros Oriental.

Mayor Agustin Perdices yesterday lauded the opening of Robinsons Place , the first full-service shopping mall in Dumaguete, as he expressed hopes it will not just boost the local economy but generate more jobs for residents.
Perdices expressed his gratitude to the Gokongwei family for their huge investment in setting up Robinsons Place in Dumaguete.
He lamented that “it is sad to see the young people of the city leave home to seek jobs overseas or in other areas outside of Dumaguete.”
Perdices said he is looking forward to seeing more investors come to Dumaguete now that Robinsons has set the ball rolling.
Lance Gokongwei, president and chief executive officer of Robinsons Land Corp., said they are happy that Robinsons Mall in Dumaguete was finally inaugurated.
He said they are thankful to local government officials in Dumaguete who helped them in completing the requirements for the construction of the building.
Gokongwei said they are now studying the possibility of expanding the mall in the near future.
He added they have been considering the offer of putting up a hotel that would complement the demand for tourist accommodation, following the rise in the number of visitors to Dumaguete and Negros Oriental.
Gokongwei said they noticed such increase based on the daily Cebu Pacific flights to Dumaguete.
He is optimistic that through the mall they can help improve the economic activity in the province, and provide employment opportunities as well.
Also attending yesterday's inauguration were key officials of Robinsons and Gokongwei family members, Gov. Emilio Macias II, Rep. George Arnaiz (Neg. Or.,) and Rep. Jocelyn Limkaichong (Neg. Or., 1 st District), Perdices, city and provincial officials, and representatives from the business sectors.
Highlighting the opening were the presence of movie stars Dawn Zulueta, Dingdong Dantes and Bianca Gonzales.*JFP/MA
lgseccionph November 24th, 2009, 08:15 AM School board gets P12M from city
BY MARICAR ARANAS
The Dumaguete City government has allocated an additional P12 million for the school board fund.
Mayor Agustin Perdices said the amount was taken from the 20 percent Economic Development Fund of the Internal Revenue Allotment share of the city.
The local government has a total IRA of more than P40 million from the taxes it collects, from where the P12 million was sourced out.
Perdices asked Division Schools Superintendent Dr. Profetiza Lim to identify the projects needed by different schools, and to immediately submit proposals.
He emphasized the need to address the lack of school facilities, toilets and classrooms. Every year the student population has been increasing, especially in the elementary level, the mayor noted.
The school board said if there is a need to reasonably increase the fund they can allocate a supplemental budget in the middle of the school year.
The additional budget will also be used to augment the fund for the implementation of the Free Noon Meal Feeding program in the interim divisions like Dumaguete City.*MA

Miguel November 27th, 2009, 03:59 AM BUGLASAN
The Oldest Running Festival of Festivals in the Country
Buglasan Festival is in memory of the island's beginnings, when its cultural character began to take shape, the event comprised booth presentations, indigenous culinary competitions, and street dances and field presentations of various local cultural productions that had evolved into modest festivals. In recognition of the unique and distinct nature of each one, the competition was called the Festival of Festivals.
Buglasan is derived from the vernacular Buglas, referring to the tall reeds, somewhat like today’s napier grass, that is said to have once covered the entire island so thickly that the natives of neighboring islands referred the island as Buglas.
The history of Buglasan started in May 22, 1981 and was conceptualized by the local Foundation University. Former Foundation University president Marcelino Maxino tasked committees to research on the local festivities and traditional dance that would be included in the said festival.
Buglasan at that time was basically about the different dances from the different towns of Negros Oriental and the competition was held in Foundation University. The incentive of the winner would then be to join the defunct National Folk Arts Festival of Imelda Marcos.
Years following the first Buglasan, the festival was adopted by the provincial government of Negros Oriental and which Foundation University officially turned the festival over to the province. Buglasan has also evolved from the traditional festival of festivals showdown as it has now added other activities like the Buglasan Booths, Buglasan King and Queen competition, Balak, Harana, Rondalla and other performing arts competitions, games and sports, rodeo and horse show competitions, marching band, the Outstanding Negrense Award, community talents night, farm-family congress and fireworks competition.
The Buglasan Festival of Festivals bring all these together for a "one-stop shop" of Negros Oriental's achievements in cultural advancement and creativity.

Tourist arrivals in 16 local destinations post P4-M in 6 months of 2009
By Lynda B. Valencia
MANILA, Nov. 27 (PNA)-– Tourist arrivals in the top 16 destinations posted P4-million, up by 16.5 percent in the first semester of 2009.
Tourism Secretary Joseph 'Ace' Durano said the 16 destinations are Camarines Sur, Cebu, Boracay, Baguio, Davao, Puerto Galera, Bohol, Negros Occidental, Negros Oriental, Ilocos Norte, Masbate, Camarines Norte, Puerto Princesa, Legaspi, Catanduanes and Sorsogon.
Durano said foreign tourists make up 808,389 while domestics totaled 2,965,126.
He said Camarines Sur posted a hefty growth in both foreign and domestic arrivals by 52 percent and 260 percent, respectively, ranking it as the most visited destination during the first half of 2009 with 903,202 tourists.
The provincial government of Camarines Sur promoted the wakeboarding tourism product which stimulated visitor volume while continuing to bolster demand for more accommodation, tour services and transportation.
The influx of tourists in Camarines Sur also facilitated the expansion of infrastructure and development of tourism-related products.
The success of the local government unit (LGU) initiatives serves as a model for other LGUs to harness their tourism potentials and optimize local resources to create more economic activity.
He said that Cebu is the second most visited tourist destination with 830,599 visitors, claiming 23 percent share of total arrivals,
Cebu continues to be the top destination for foreign tourists with 321,116 in the first semester.
Durano also stressed that the expansion in air access from major tourists markets, including the new charter flights from Incheon, Busan, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Kaohsiung as well as increase in room supply, aggressive promotion, public and private sector partnership to diversify the tourism products greatly contributed to the hike in visitor volume to Cebu.
Visitor count in Puerto Princesa and Bohol went up by 63 percent and 16 percent, respectively, as diving, ecotourism, bird-watching, adventure and incentive tourism products were jointly launched by the DOT, LGUs and the private sector.
Other most frequently visited destinations included Boracay (383,813); Davao City (330.247); Puerto Galera (215,755); and Ilocos Norte (99,747) tourist arrivals.
"The department’s efforts to maximize opportunities to international markets and encourage greater domestic travel or movement in the first six months provided the impetus to sustain tourism growth in the midst of challenger brought by the global financial crisis and influenza A(H1N1)," he said.
This feat is attributed to the substantial increase in domestic tourism by 20 percent in second quarter of 2009, enhancing the sector’s business and investment confidence.
Likewise, Durano said, the challenging lifestyle and travel pattern of more Filipinos and Philippine residents to spend their Holy Week, long weekends, summer/holiday vacation in the country boosted tourist flow.
The increased demand encouraged more entrepreneurs to create new products and experienced for visitors.
The Island Banca Cruises in Cebu attracted visitors with its differently organized and packaged island hopping tour of the marine sanctuaries of Nalusuan and Gilutungan, the pristine white beach of Pandanan and dive sites of Moalboal.
Kultura Filipino in Intramuros also gave the tourists an opportunity to acquaint themselves with the Philippine cultural heritage through local dances, music and cuisine.
Similarly, the Pasig Cruise lured tourists to visit and appreciate many sights and attractions of Metro Manila. More than a river cruise, the product provides cultural interaction, culinary treats, historical tours and enchantments.
With increased popularity for adventure tourism, spelunking in the Suhoton Caves in Basey, Samar offers visitor a quaint experience – communicating with nature, exploring the area’s wonders.
The volume of dive tourists in Cebu, Bohol, Palawan, Mindoro Oriental, Batangas grew by 62.8 percent for the first semester of 2009.
German dive enthusiasts posted 131.9 percent while the Koreans dive tourists went up by 104 percent, American (37 percent); Japanese (34 percent); and Chinese (31 percent.
Substantial growth of 82 percent was recorded during the first quarter of 2009. Revenues generated by dive operations in Bohol surged by 195 percent while those in Cebu rose by 69 percent. (PNA)LOR/LBV

Negros Oriental State University celebrates 82nd Founders Day
By Rachelle M. Nessia
Dumaguete City (27 November) -- The Negros Oriental State University here will celebrate its 82nd Founders Day celebration with the theme "NORSU: Industry and Hard Work for Productivity."
It is a 6-day celebration starting Saturday, November 28 to Thursday, December 3.
The founders day theme was suggested by NORSU President Henry A. Sojor during the faculty meeting in June this year. He said NORSU graduates are now recognized not only locally but also in the national and global arenas; and a number of graduates have been topnotchers in professional and licensure exams.
The highlight of the celebration is Hugyawan '09 – an entertainment that involves street dancing in the major city streets of Dumaguete and the showdown of each contingent's presentation at the NORSU Cultural Complex. Hugyawan is a Cebuano term for shouts of joy and merriment. For entertainment purposes, Hugyawan 09 has its own theme which is NORSU: in a hilarious encounter with world's superheroes.
The 14 contingents are from the two main campuses in Dumaguete City to its satellite campuses of Guihulngan, Bais, Siaton, Bayawan-Sta. Catalina, and the latest satellite campus of Mabinay. Hugyawan '09 is chaired by Dr. Peter T. Dayot. Overall chair for the founders day is Dr. Ma. Elsa Ilona Bulado, with Dr. Mary Evangeline F. Gajunera, co-chair.
In 1927, NORSU was then known as Negros Oriental Trade School (NOTS). In 1956, NOTS was changed to East Visayan School of Arts and Trades (EVSAT). In 1983, it became Central Visayas Polytechnic College (CVPC); and in 2004, it became NORSU, created through Republic Act 9299 on June 25, 2004. August 19, 2004 marked the day for the investiture of Dr. Henry A. Sojor as first president of NORSU. (PIA/rmn)

Linguine December 1st, 2009, 10:37 AM Bacong Church tagged as one of RP’s national cultural treasures
DUMAGUETE City - The parish church of Saint Agustine de Hippo of Bacong in Negros Oriental was formally declared as one of the 30 three National Cultural Treasures of the country through the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA).
The certificate of declaration was signed by Corazon Alvina, director of the National Museum, and was formally awarded by Rev. Fr. Harold Rentoria of the NCCA. The awarding was held Thursday last week during the inauguration of the newly rehabilitated pipe organ of Bacong Church.
The celebration was witnessed by Most Rev. Julito Cortes, Auxilliary Bishop of the Diocese of Cebu, Bishop John Du of the Diocese of Dumaguete, Fr. Rentoria of NCCA, and Bacong parish priest, Fr. Alfredo Duran.
Also present during the celebration were Bacong Mayor Lenin Alviola, local officials, Rep. Henry Pryde Teves of the Third district of Negros Oriental, Board Member Erwin Michael Macias and Negros Oriental State University President Dr. Henry Sojor.
The pipe organ of Bacong has been silent for 39 years after some of its parts were destroyed and stolen. It is one of the oldest church organs in the country, according to NCCA.
Effort to pursue the rehabilitation of the church pipe organ was made through the cooperation of from parishioners, local government units (LGUs), generous donors and the NCCA.
Cortes expressed his support to the parishioners in Bacong for not losing hope in restoring one of the priceless treasures of the church. It is not only the pride of Bacong but also of the entire Roman Catholic Church and the province of Negros Oriental.
Du also thanked the local government units, parishioners and the generous donors for the rehabilitation of the pipe organ. He encouraged the people to cooperate with the church in protecting the pipe organ from unscrupulous individuals.
After the thanksgiving mass, Du and Cortes unveiled the church marker that states the evidence of the existence of the pipe organ in Bacong Church, one of the oldest churches in Negros Oriental.
According to Rentoria, they have submitted another proposal to further rehabilitate some parts of the church like the ceiling, altar and sacristy. The NCCA will allocate some funds for the rehabilitation but it also needs a counterpart funding from the LGUs.
He is also encouraging the LGU to conduct cultural mapping to identify the oldest house, historic place, artist, delicacies and song of the said town. The historic mapping would be the long term development plan for Bacong.
Teves said the restoration of the church organ would mark an important history in the minds and hearts of the people in Bacong and Negros Oriental. He added that the pipe organ in Bacong would become an added tourism destination in the province.
He said church workers should also be vigilant in taking care of the instrument so that it would last until the next generation and onwards. (PNA/ Maricar Aranas)

i have but i think it's impossible na ngayon sila mag apply ng permit, the year is ending, usually requirements for building permit includes real property taxes that should have a receipt stating year 2010 payment. and also it's already december, and it is at this time that employees file their vacation leave. so, sayang lang ang time mo pag process ng permit, halos yung mga important people ay absent... hehehe
btw, i remember pala, some friends of mine from Napocor... they have this yearly xmas bonus in a form of a gift check worth 40t and can be used only to purchase items from SM cebu. i dont know now if it is still SM cebu... i have a strong feeling na sa robinsons na ngayon.

For me MovieWorld is good enough since it has digital picture and Dolby surround sound. I hope they would add additional screen though so we have more choices which movie to watch.

vince995 December 3rd, 2009, 04:58 PM ^^ how about manila bands or recording artists? any idea or schedule? baka naka line-up na ang mga performances sa activity center ng robs. good!
vince995 December 4th, 2009, 09:11 AM guys, can anyone here post pics of RPD showing the MC parking area? anyways, it's just fitting that the parking space for MCs was placed in front, defining dumaguete as the MC capital of the country... my friend from manila was shock to see the number of MCs parked last night... it's too many or plenty or whatever hehehe how do you describe it?... gigundo! perhaps hahaha

I actually like Gibo and Gordon. Seems like they are the most prepared, and very executive like. Arroyo could be a thorn in the flesh for Gibop, though, but I believe he is intelligent enough not to be ruled by her should he win the presidency. His association with the president is a negative factor, but overall I think he is the most prepared and most intelligent, and most executive like of all the presidentiables, along with Gordon.
Noynoy could be there, but I put him third only on myu list. He is not as prepared as the other two, experience and education wise. What he has is popularity brought about by emotional attachment to President Aquino's demise and probably association with the church, in addition to his posture as "the presidential candidate who was not supposed to be", but I wouldn't take that as basis for becoming president of our fast deteriorating country.

I like the circular shape of the foodourt, and it is quite spacious. Overall I like how spaces were utilized at the RPD which, though not really big, portrays an idea of spaciousness and grandness. Good job for the architects.

nicko December 4th, 2009, 10:48 AM Well, well, well... guess whose renovating now?? Haha. It's LSP! They are renovating their annex building! They are changing their tiles to granite...... And they are also tweaking on their ceilings and making some changes on their walls..... Naay poster "Prepare for a fresh new look!" Good move LSP!
ritche December 4th, 2009, 10:52 AM I could see them actually putting up elevator. It's needed because LSP is a multilevel mall! Perhaps more escalators. And now I could see there's no more reason they wouldn't acquire the adjacent lots: Ho's Art and probably Abian, even the lot behind Du Ek Sam which they could use as parking area.
nicko December 4th, 2009, 10:56 AM and in fairness, if you think people are dumping LSP over robs then you are wrong.. LSP is still crowded just like before when rob is not yet around.
vince995 December 4th, 2009, 04:23 PM ^^ that's true...
know what? i like robs grocery section, they have more brands there. and i noticed the imported canned goods at robs, they're cheaper than LSP. and oh finally... i found the san marino corned tuna there... like the commercial ad "it's hhot" hahaha... nice one actually and it taste good... yummy! try nyo..

poll automation... i think this will affect the candidates. considering that or based on the past elections, the choices of candidates are written in alphabetical order... so in this case, aquino will have the edge and also estrada. but im pretty sure it will be a close fight, between aquino and teodoro.... my analysis is that aquino would do well in NCR and portions of the visayas. teodoro will be strong in mindanao, and northern luzon. and the visayas vote? it will be a split decision between the two.
lgseccionph December 5th, 2009, 01:02 AM E-PLDT Ventus lauds local talent pool for call center in Dumaguete
DUMAGUETE CITY, Dec. 4 (PNA) –- E-PLDT Ventus, the latest business process outsourcing (BPO) company to penetrate the Dumaguete market, has expressed satisfaction over the local talent pool that it had hired over a month ago at the start of its operations here.
E-PLDT Ventus on Thursday moved to its new site after it inaugurated its call center in the outskirts village of Bagacay, where at least 400 call agents work on two shifts.
The call center agents are at present working on extended daytime operations with minimal graveyard shift assignments.
Helen Marquez, president and chief executive officer of E-PLDT Ventus, said they are happy with the local talent pool in their 8th call center in the country, describing them as hard-working and professional.
At present, the BPO is catering to a wireless telecommunications company for its pre-paid services but eventually the company will expand its domestic market and bring in international accounts, Marquez added.
E-PLDT Ventus, she said, is a Filipino company which currently 30,000 employs nationwide, including its sister company, SPI, which also operates a BPO in Bacong, Negros Oriental, about 15 minutes ride south of here.
Both BPOs belong to the parent company, SPI Global Solutions, headed by Maulik Parekh, formerly of TeleTech, the first firm to set up a call center in Dumaguete.
Marquez also confirmed media reports that despite the current global economic downtrend, the BPO industry in the Philippines continues to grow.
In fact, she noted that the Philippines was cited as being one of the best places in the world for customer care services. (PNA (http://www.pna.gov.ph/index.php?idn=&nid=2&rid=245554))

I really have nothing to complain yet about Robinsons Dumaguete at this point in time. It's still "warming up", as they say, and turn oiver date for that mall building is still on New Year. Probably one of the reasons it was opened even before official completion date is RLC wants to get ideas from people of this city on how the mall should be run. As far as I am concerned, Robinsons Dumaguete seems to be the only mall of its size, or perhaps one of the few Robinsons malls, having a customer service counter.

ritche December 7th, 2009, 03:33 AM Am still hopeful for at least a Figaro coffee shop to open at Robinsons Dumaguete. Figaro's prices by the way are just a very little higher than the Coffee Avenue, the coffee shop at the 2nd level. RP Dumaguete's ambience is really for high end shops. I know that is the ultimate goal, to have a high end mall in the middle of the business park.

^^ Figaro Coffee Company was my favorite coffee-chain.
My personal rankings of coffee-chains according to overall coffee-drinking experience:
Old Rankings:
1. Figaro Coffee Company
2. The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf
3. Gloria Jean's Coffees
4. Starbucks Coffee
5. Bo's Coffee Club
However, my recent visits at my favorite Figaro outlet (at Ayala Center - Cebu's The Terraces) have been consistently bad.
Because of this, Figaro Coffee Company has slid dramatically among my personally-preferred coffee-chain-brands. It now places fourth.
New Rankings:
1. The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf
2. Gloria Jean's Coffees
3. Starbucks Coffee
4. Figaro Coffee Company
5. Bo's Coffee Club

Bacong Church
Church of St. Augustin of Hippo
Built in 1866 , Bacong church is located by the sea featuring the oldest existing main altar reputed to be the province’s oldest and its belfry is also reputed to be the province’s tallest, with winding steps to the top, was used as a look-out point for seafaring pirates who used to attack the village. It even got its name when they fought the enemy with their battlecry, “Bacon, Bacon”, meaning “Arise, get up!”
According to the Panublion Heritage Site, this sandstone church with sedate classical lines is one of the few remaining colonial churches in Negros. Its use of dark sandstone is unusual in the Visayas, where coral is the preferred building material.
Another interesting feature of the church is the pipe orgran. It is one of the oldest church organs in the country. Built by Roques Hermanos from Zaragoza, Spain in 1894 and through the efforts of the first parish priest, Rev. Joaquin Soriano. The pipe organ of Bacong has been silent for 39 years after some of its parts were destroyed and stolen but through the rehabilitation efforts of local government units, parishioners and NCCA its hymn is once again heard.
The famous Filipino revolutionary hero Pantaleon Villegas or better known as "Leon Kilat" who fought against the Spaniards in the Visayas was once an acolyte in this church. He was born in Bacong and led the Katipuneros in Cebu.
The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) has designated the Bacong Church as one of the 26 churches which were considered as NATIONAL CULTURAL TREASURES (http://www.ncca.gov.ph/about-culture-and-arts/culture-profile/colonial%20churches/culture-profile-colonial-churches.php). It have been identified by NCCA for their cultural significance and distinctive architecture.

DAUIN CHURCH
San Nicolas de Tolentino Church
Dauin's colonial Church of San Nicolas also merges with history as ruins of two dome-shaped watchtowers, used also to warn against pirates, remain fronting it. It is regarded as one of Negros Oriental's oldest.
The present massive church of Dauin was a work of love of the Recollect missionaries. From 1857 to his death on 29 August 1864, Fray Navarro started the construction of the stone church with the thick walls of the Sacristy, presbytery, and transepts together with their roofing completed.
It was Fray Tomas Gonzales in 1864-1874 who built the bahay na bato convent, while resuming the construction work of the church. However, most deserving of credit for the grandiose church dominating the hilly town of Dauin went to Fray Manuel Cabriada.
As parish priest in 1874-1896, Fray Manuel Cabriada remodeled the Church to make it spacious, proportionate, and beautiful. Because of its topographical location, one could also imagine the enormous mass of earth excavated to fill up the site of the church complex.
Fray Manuel embellished the structure by providing over the church façade an elegant portico made of fine square hewn stones and slender columns. It’s also said that he completed the entire project in the early 1880s.
The Church of St. Nicholas of Tolentine had withstood the ravages of time. No doubt, it represents as a silent witness to the “Recollect builders’ tremendous tasks and commitment to the Filipinos.” It is a “fusion of European and Asian architectural motifs,” borrowing a description by the National Commission for Culture and Arts (NCCA), Msgr. Robert A. Bongoyan cannot allow the ravages of pollution and town development to take its toll on this imposing edifice. It constitutes a cultural patrimony of Dauin that needs to be preserved and protected.

DUMAGUETE CATHEDRAL
St. Catherine de Alexandria Cathedral
Sta. Catalina de Alexandria Cathedral is the oldest stone church in Negros which was originally built in 1754, got burned and reconstructed in 1885 and then extended in 1936. Since then, many modern touches have already been incorporated into the cathedral's interior and exterior. It is also the largest church in the city. With a gilded and ornate altar, high ceilings and hanging chandeliers, the church is a grandiose display of traditional European architecture. The façade is also worthy of praise, having undergone a recent restoration in the year 2005. The brick stone pathway lends an old world feel, much appropriate for perhaps a lady with a Spanish lace veil over her head emerging from a horse drawn carriage.

The brick stone pathway lends an old world feel, much appropriate for perhaps a lady with a Spanish lace veil over her head emerging from a horse drawn carriage.

nicko December 13th, 2009, 06:32 AM FINALLY!!!... Negros Oriental Provincial Hospital has received the long-awaited 50M Magnetic Resonance Machine (MRI) after months of bidding. Now, we can be truly proud to have one in the city. There are only very few provincial hospitals in the country that are fortunate enough to have a facility such as this... We should be truly proud and thankful! This is done through the efforts of our Governor, who is also a Surgeon by profession, Hon. Emilio Macias!
Meanwhile, the 55M annex building of NOPH will be started by January already!

What's a more sophisticated imaging equipment than MRI? Is it molecular or nuclear imaging? When talking about Silliman Med a few years back, Silliman President Ben Malayang said that the administration of Silliman Med would acquire a "machine more sophisticated than MRI". He didn't specify what machine that is.

24 Best Desserts awarded tomorrow night
It’s the one glamour event any foodie wouldn’t want to miss-as the top certified blockbuster sweets from across the land get their well-deserved red-carpet treatment
CARE FOR A SLICE OF Frozen Brazo de Mercedes? Or a scoop of Homemade Ice Cream? How about Green Tea Chocolate Marble? Or Strawberry Charlotte, perhaps?
These and 20 more of the country’s certified blockbuster sweets are on the house tomorrow night in the Inquirer Lifestyle’s “The 24 Best Desserts” in partnership with SM Mall of Asia.
Cocktails start at 6 p.m. at the MOA Atrium which will be lined up with booths of each of the 24 awardees who will offer samplers and sell their products as well.
There will also be a food demonstration at 3 p.m. by yet other award-winning dessert makers Pastry Alliance of the Philippines, Center for Culinary Arts-Manila, Unilever and Vittoria Coffee.
In the tradition of the smash hit Yummiest Desserts, the 24 Best Desserts pooled together the top desserts as vouched by foodies and culinary experts. The event is part of the Inquirer’s 24th anniversary which falls on Dec. 9. The event likewise kicks off SM MOA’s Christmas celebration.
There will be entries that come all the way from the far corners of the country, such as Davao’s Durian Pie by Cecil’s Snack Inn and Bakeshoppe, Cebu’s Chocolate Decadence by Café Georg, Dumaguete’s Sans Rival by Sans Rival Cakes and Pastries, and Bulacan’s Inipit by GemSevilla Sweets.

^^ i know that...but why the proliferation of motorcycles?
Dumaguete kasi is a small city with small streets. Important places to go is just a short travel time away, so motorcycles were the most reliable means of going around (Silliman University comprises a large part of the city area so riding a motorcycle in the campus is a way of life :)). That's why ngayon, its quite challenging to drive a car downtown of Dumaguete. Marami ring cars sa Dumaguete but motorcycles (bikes/broom-broom) outnumber them :banana::banana::banana:

The Dumaguete Belfry is the city's most popular architectural landmark. Erected in 1811 as the bell tower of the Cathedral of Saint Catherine of Alexandria and watchtower to forewarn townfolk of impending attacks by marauding pirates, the Dumaguete Belfry was restored in 1985 and skirted with a garden ten years later. Hence, the name Dumaguete was originated.
"Dumaguete" was coined from the Visayan word "daggit" which means "to snatch". Because of the frequent marauding attacks of the Muslim pirates on this once coastal town, and the power to attract and keep her visitors for good, the word "dumaguet" was coined, meaning "to swoop". These raids were so rampant in the area during those times that this little fishing village came to be known as “Dumagit” or “Dagit” which means “kidnap” in the local Cebuano language. The Spanish authorities later adopted and restructured or “hispanized” the name to “Dumaguete”.
Also known as the Cathedral Belfry, this landmark has become the city’s most photographed attractions, endowed with history and stories.
The Dumaguete Belfry along Perdices Street (formerly Alfonso XIII Street) was used as a watchtower during the 19th Century to warn the inhabitants (by ringing the bells) of the then small fishing village of impending raids by marauding pirates from the south of the islands. From its top can be seen the island of Mindanao on the horizon (now obscured by trees and buildings).

I was told by a Robinsons employee that to get the mall to full operation would take about a year. Regarding ATMs, I think it will come soon. Imagine a major mall without ATMs...On christmas decors, I think it is prudent for management not to spend much because the mall has just opened and spending much would only incur a lot of costs which might affect long term profitability and viability of the mall. Perhaps next year they will spend more on christmas decors. But at this time, ongoing beautification works are enough for me. Robinsons Dumaguete is getting beautiful as days pass by. Turnover date of the mall building by the contractor is January 1, 2010.
On spaces not occupied, I think spaces are already more than 90% taken. Most of the tenants will come or start renovating towards the end of the year, or early next year. There are more than a hundred confirmed tenants, and so far I think there are only about 50 tenants yet at RPD. I think there will be surprise tenants which are not yet even mentioned. Of course, a good indication that spaces are well occupied is the fact that management is studying expanding the mall "in the near future."
On parking boys, they should be there as tending motorcycles in front of the mall has become a "lucrative job" for these less fortunate individuals.

Robinsons Dumaguete's hallways are larger than the usual malls, and we need to be thankful for that. Surely those spaces will be occupied soon. These hallways are ideal for coffee and food shops. For sure, naa gyud na ATM booths/kiosk. Pero, ngano wa nila convince ang major banks to install an ATM machine before or during the opening of the mall?
It is a major lapse on their side.

national guard December 18th, 2009, 10:35 PM Negros Oriental town eyes acquisition of water quality monitoring laboratory
DUMAGUETE CITY, Dec. 18 (PNA) -- Mayor Rodrigo Alanano of Dauin, Negros Oriental is planning to acquire a water quality monitoring laboratory to ensure regular monitoring of the town’s water sources.
At present, townsfolk are getting water supply from spring water sources in the mountain barangays of Dauin, he said.
Alanano said the total cost of the water quality laboratory equipment would reach P365,000 for the entire set.
He added the town would also need to have a separate building, the design of which has to be approved based on standards of the Department of Health.
The mayor also said they have to train personnel for the said facility.
Alanano said the project could be implemented before the 2010 elections if it can be included in the priority programs and projects of the town as the local government unit has enough funds to purchase the laboratory equipment.
He stressed the importance of safe drinking water sources because water is essential to human health.
The laboratory would also become an income generating facility because it can conduct tests of water samples from the neighbouring municipalities.
The water quality laboratory is one of the projects envisioned by the Metropolitan Inter-local Government Health Zone.
A recent forum on the status of the water sources in Negros Oriental revealed that Dauin is one of the towns in the province that has zero records on water quality monitoring.
Once the facility is in place, the mayor said he would suggest to require all resorts and hotels in Dauin that have swimming pools to submit water samples to ensure that the water is not contaminated. (PNA)

Dumagueteño December 19th, 2009, 03:34 PM Is the Robinsons Savings Bank a member of the 3 major network (Bancnet, Megaling & Expressnet)? I hope.
About SM, a friend whose bro works at NORECO 2, said that SM has actually inquired about the requirements but he's not sure if its for a mall or just an SM Savemore (grocery). But any kind of development small or big, we definitely welcome here in Dumaguete.

vince995 December 21st, 2009, 01:43 PM i'm still hoping that Music One or Odyssey will open a branch here in Robinsons Dumaguete. and also Apple-Mac shop? i think we don't have a clear distributor of Macintosh products here.
vince995 December 21st, 2009, 02:01 PM Robinsons Dumaguete's hallways are larger than the usual malls, and we need to be thankful for that. Surely those spaces will be occupied soon. These hallways are ideal for coffee and food shops. The large area at the center, however, is an activity center, and I think there is a long term plan to put a fountain in that area...
^^i noticed that also... and im thinking if those spaces will be for tenants or display use, then why did they forgot to put some electrical floor outlets as preparation? even some display and decors, they have to use extension cords... naka taped na flat cord wire eh... and it's ugly to look at really (hehehe). sana na prepare nila ng maayos before the floor tile layouts.
vince995 December 21st, 2009, 02:40 PM Shakey's RPD renovations are done by uymatiao construction. this construction firm i trust when it comes to workmanship... same firm that constructed the silliman portal west mall, SUMC new building, PHCCI, and others (good looking buildings).hehehe oh btw, and i think it's safe to say that silliman is the only school here in region 7 that has a mall... and that the school is a 36ha campus.
