Not bad.. But what really annoys me so much on LSP are their ceilings! Can't they do something about it?? You can actually just see the internal organs of the building.. Pipings, wirings, aircon ducts, etc... A complete eyesore. It looks so dirty.... And annoying.

They decided not to completely destroy Silliman's precious heritage. Here's the newly-refurbished Oriental Hall, the new home of the College of Performing Arts.

http://i629.photobucket.com/albums/uu16/ponsing1983/IMG_2515.jpg?t=1282381103

I once suggested to the Silliman President not to tear down the old buildings of SU but just to refurbish them, or to reinforce what needs to be reinforced especially the weak posts...It's good my suggestion was followed in this building. It will allow nostalgia to flow through and for old alumni not to be left behind by the modernization that's going on inside Silliman...

I only have one comment: I wish they replace those white sticks supporting the canopy in the building's mid portion...They look cheap and fragile. Some kind of steel thingy or an artistic wooden support would be good for this...

I guess they're not going to install that old signage to their new bldg :lol::lol:... because they're going to leave the area and it would be very easy for them to transfer.

Take note Guys... New Mall they also be wearing their New Uniform for their sales clerk. It is still blue but lighter than the current uniform. If Cangs Main Branch currently have to close during lunch break and on Sundays....with their new mall... No noon Break and still open on Sundays :banana::banana:...... I'd love to see more rural and other commercial banks come here, Dems. The likes of Greenbank of Butuan and Cebu-based Fairbank. Even small investments help boost our economy.

Other updates:

1. The renovation of the Mitsubishi dealership is nearing completion.
2. Suzuki Motorworld in Bunao is also almost finished.
3. Top 7 Supermarket along the National Highway in Sibulan (not a big one though, just a regular grocery store despite the name) recently opened.
4. Another spa will soon open beside D-Lite Commercial (Veterans Avenue).

I do not really know but the last time we had a get together she was really sexy on her bikinis while doing the fire dance a few weeks ago...

Dumaguete market receives P1-M grant for cold storage facility

DUMAGUETE CITY, Aug. 22 (PNA) -- The Dumaguete City Market Enterprise will receive P1 million grant from the Department of Agriculture, according to Market Enterprises Supervisor Engr. Jose Ronnie Fortin.

The said grant will be used to purchase additional cold storage facility for the meat section.

Fortin said the present cold storage facility formally started its operation in November 2009 after the construction was completed. The said facility has been utilized by the fish traders especially those who are selling huge fish like tuna, tangigue or blue marlin.

The said facility has a limited capacity of two tons but at present it has been accommodating three tons of fish almost everyday.

According to Boni Villapaz, cold storage operator said most traders would keep their fish inside the cold storage for maximum of three days because of the increasing demand for fish supply.

In most days the cold storage is loaded with fish from a minimum of 2.5 to 3 tons everyday. Fortin said they are trying to find ways to minimize the storage not exceeding the two-ton capacity because it might destroy the facility.

The Market Enterprises is collecting P1.50 per kilo as fee for 24 hours usage of the cold storage facility. At present, the facility has a minimum income of P3,000 per day, according to the latest data from the market enterprises office.

Fortin admitted that during the first few months of its operation they have encountered criticisms from the fish and vegetables traders in the public market.

He said vegetable traders’ opinion can be understood because there is no much supply of fresh vegetables at the public market.

Fortin said the cold storage facility is very beneficial for fish and vegetable traders because it would ensure the freshness of the product. He said fish traders now understood the concept of having a cold storage facility because it would help maintain the freshness of the fish meat. (PNA)

Dumaguete to get 10 tourist police personnel

DUMAGUETE CITY, Aug. 22 (PNA) -- Ten tourist police will be assigned in Dumaguete City, according to Dumaguete City Mayor Manuel Sagarbarria.

The tourist police will be based in Dumaguete but they can also provide assistance to different tourism destinations in the province.

Mayor Sagarbarria said he made the requests at the national headquarters after he learned that there will be tourist police assigned to different areas especially areas highly visited by tourists.

He said Dumaguete City is the capital city of the province and the boulevard is one of the main attractions to tourists and visitors.

The tourist police will be wearing a special uniform that will identify them as tourist police.

The Mayor is also planning to purchase bicycles for the tourist police that will be used while they are on roving patrol around the tourist destination areas in Dumaguete.

According to Mayor Sagarbarria he is planning to utilize some space at the Dumaguete Press Club building that will serve as headquarters for the Tourist Police. He believed the Press Club building would be a strategic location for the headquarters of tourists police because it is located along the Rizal Boulevard.

At present, foreign tourists can be seen in most cafes and restaurants along Rizal Boulevard in Dumaguete because they simply love the beautiful scenery of the boulevard.

Mayor Sagarbarria clarified tourism industry is one of his programs in Dumaguete. The Mayor is now on initial planning stage to continue the expansion of Rizal Boulevard to north and south areas.

He has instructed the City Engineers Office (CEO) and the City Planning and Development Office (CPDO) to make a strategic development plan for the expansion of Rizal boulevard.

He said poor peace and order is a huge obstacle to tourism development because most foreign tourists come and visit the city to relax and embrace the warm culture of the Dumagueteños. (PNA)

Suzuki Motorworld is quite big, right?

It is not Suzuki Motor World but Suzuki World as it will probably have a car showroom too, the first integrated Suzuki car-motorcycle showroom in the country.

Watch out for the building in the corner of Real St. and EJ Blanco, I think something's going on there. I hope ponsing could take pictures of that corner building in front of Mercury Drug. They already demolished the concrete fence blocking the view of that building from the National Highway.

Med school gets 100% passing score
August 23, 2010, 4:05pm

DUMAGUETE CITY (PNA) — Seven out of seven graduates of Silliman University’s School of Medicine passed the recent board exams for physicians, according to SU President Dr. Ben Malayang III.

The graduates are doctors Philmed Salindo, Georgita Partosa, Tanya Ramas Uypitching, Pearl Vidal, Sheena Saycon, Julie Cabristante, and Kristine Espancho.

Of the seven, four — Salindo, Partosa, Saycon and Cabristante — are scholars of the provincial government.

Silliman University’s School of Medicine was fully recognized last year, with Dr. Jonathan Amante designated as its first dean.

Malayang attributed said School of Medicine’s achieving a remarkable first-time batch passing rate of 100 percent to its “strong cadre of medical professionals.”

He said a complex profession like medicine requires the effort of many, not just the faculty but also facilities and sufficient funding requirement.

Malayang said what the university has achieved is the result of the cooperation of the university, along with parents and students in exerting efforts to ensure stellar performance by the graduates.

For his part, Dr. Amante said the results of the board exams is not a one-time thing, but rather, requires much preparation.

He said as early as in the 4th year of their medical education, the students of medicine already had a one-year review integrated into their clinical responsibilities.

Upon graduation, they go on to undertake post-graduation internship for a year and then submit themselves into an intensive board review, with SU’s support.

Amante also said that in the SU School of Medicine’s fourth year curriculum, three important aspects of being a physician, namely professionalism in medicine, spirituality in medicine and reproductive health, are integrated in the SU School of Medicine’s fourth year curriculum, making SU one of the few medical schools in the country where spirituality is included as part of the student’s total professional preparation.

The SU School of Medicine began with 11 students.

Tourist volume rises slightly in January-May

Visitors to the country’s key tourist destinations rose 5.37% to 3.65 million in the five months to May from the same period in 2009, the Department of Tourism said in a press release yesterday.

Foreign tourists increased 12.81%, while domestic tourists grew by a slower 2.12%.

Metro Manila was the leading destination, accounting for 23.3% of the total with 848,518 tourists staying in accommodation facilities. That volume was up 17% year on year.

The East Asian market, composed of China, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan, was the metropolis’ major source of tourists, accounting for 41.78% of total visitors.

Local residents from other regions visiting Metro Manila for tourism-related purposes and staying in hotels and similar facilities made up 35.4%.

Tourist count in Cebu grew 4.34% to 734,531 visitors, accounting for a fifth of the total for that period.

South Korea and Japan were the leading source markets for Cebu, accounting for 30% and 21%, respectively, of total foreign visitors to that province.

Tourists visiting Boracay Island rose 12.15%, with foreign visitors growing 26% against 6% for local tourists.

Seven destinations in the Central Philippines Super Region (Boracay, Bohol, Camarines Sur, Camiguin, Cebu, Negros Oriental and Puerto Princesa), as well as Metro Manila and Tagaytay City, recorded a total of 2,343 tourist accommodation facilities that provided 65,052 rooms.

The select destinations in the Central Philippines Super Region accounted for 60% of total rooms, while Metro Manila and Tagaytay City accounted for 37% and 3%, respectively.

Wendy’s operator cleared to sub-franchise

WENPHIL Corp., the master franchisee of burger chain Wendy’s Hamburger in the Philippines, will start sub-franchising the brand following approval from the brand owner in the United States.

http://www.bworldonline.com/webpics/articles/image/20100823d7d39.jpg
WENPHIL CORP. has committed to open 84 new burger stores in the next 10 years.

The development -- which makes Wenphil the first Wendy’s master franchisee in the world to be allowed to engage in sub-franchising -- will help increase local stores to more than 100 in the next 10 years.

For this year, the company wants to hike revenues by a double-digit rate to about P1 billion, an executive said.

“We are starting to sub-franchise now. We think it is a good time for us because Wendy’s in the US has allowed us to sub-franchise,” Jason John W.S. Lim, the firm’s general manager, told BusinessWorld in an interview.

“It is good timing since people are looking to place their money somewhere. Instead of putting your money in the bank for a small interest, franchising is a good opportunity to invest your money,” Mr. Lim added.

Wenphil opened the first Wendy’s Hamburger branch in the country in 1983.

“Our commitment with the US is to open two stores this year. For the next 10 years, we are committed to open 84 stores,” Mr. Lim said.

Wendy’s Hamburger has been receiving requests to sub-franchise the brand from as far as Cebu and Davao for years, he said.

Franchisees need to spend $20,000 for the franchise fee, and a 3% royalty. To set up an outlet and start operations, investors need to shell out P6 million to P10 million.

“What we plan to do is get a sub-franchisee and we will have him expand and commit to five stores. [The arrangement] is area sub-franchising,” Mr. Lim said.

Potential “growth areas” for the hamburger chain include Cebu, Davao, Bacolod and the regions of Northern Luzon and Central Luzon, Mr. Lim said.

To date, the company has 29 stores, all of which are in Metro Manila and neighboring provinces.

Last year, Wenphil did not open new stores as it focused on renovation and improving operating efficiency given a slowdown in economic activity.

Wenphil is aiming to hike revenues by 10% this year, Mr. Lim said.

“Hopefully we grow to P1 billion,” he said.

The increase will be driven by higher sales in renovated stores.

Wenphil had seen increased sales during the elections, he said.

Last year, the company netted about P900 million in revenues.

“Aside from our target market, which is upscale, we plan to have a lot of value meals to target the masses. I think that is one good formula to expand,” Mr. Lim said.

Wendy’s Hamburger has so far spent about P100 million to renovate numerous stores since the start of the year. There are 10 more stores to renovate, for a total P150 million in spending this year, Mr. Lim said.

The hamburger chain sells beef and chicken burgers, salads, spaghetti, bacon and shrimp sandwiches, fried chicken, frosts, and coffee jellies.

The first Wendy’s Hamburger store was opened by founder Dave Thomas in Columbus, Ohio in 1969.

Alanano’s BM bid opposed: Meniong (http://www.negroschronicle.com/?p=10148)

Former 3rd District Rep. Herminio “Meniong” Teves of the Lakas-Kampi- CMD admits that the impending appointment of Dauin Vice-mayor Rodrigo Alanano to the provincial board remains undecided following some alleged complaints against the former three-term mayor.

Alanano was mentioned as the likely replacement of Roel Degamo, who assumed the vice-governorship following the demise of ex-Governor Emilio “Dodo” Macias II.

The seat vacated by Degamo belongs to the Lakas-Kampi-CMD Party, which now has the right to nominate a replacement. Incumbent 3rd District Rep. Pryde Henry Teves has earlier said that Alanano’s appointment is almost certain after the son of former Finance Secretary Gary Teves has indicated no interest to assume the position.

However, his grandfather, Meniong, refuses to neither cite in particular the complaints against Alanano nor identify the complainants.

Alanano is known to have a fiery temper but is also acknowledged to be an uncompromising environment advocate.

Local boys develop website for Hollywood actor

The internet has become the most powerful medium in marketing and communication. It developed into the indispensable tool that it is today by reshaping the way people interact with each other through email, social networks, blogs, etc. As a marketing vehicle it has widen the marketing landscape to global proportions by enabling businesses to penetrate avenues beyond the reach of conventional marketing methods.

One gigantic industry that is increasingly exploring and capitalizing on the power and influence of the internet is Hollywood. Fueled by their worldwide fans’ insatiable appetite for the latest news about their professional as well as personal lives, celebrities have trooped to the internet to enhance their accessibility at the same time boost productivity through online exposure. The internet most certainly is a fundamental part of their multimillion dollar empire.

Recently Hollywood actor Shaun Toub launched his personal website (shauntoub.com) which is a portfolio of his film, TV and theater projects. Toub has worked side by side with accomplished actors including Tom Hanks in “Charlie Wilson’s War,” Sandra Bullock in “Crash,” and Will Smith in “Bad Boys“ to name a few. In “Iron Man” Toub worked alongside Robert Downey Jr. as Yinsen. The man who saved Tony Stark’s life and helped him develop the makeshift yet effective version of Iron Man. Shaun Toub’s latest project is “The Last Airbender” where he plays the role of the firebending master Uncle Iroh who accompanies his exiled nephew Zuko on a quest to restore his honor by capturing the long lost avatar named Aang.

Tapped to develop the Hollywood actor’s website was Original Code Weavers (ocodeweavers.com), a Filipino owned and run IT company based in Los Angeles with an office located in the town of Bacong. Speaking about the experience COO Charles Yee said, “Most of our clients are US based businesses so we’re used to the pressure of meeting client’s expectations and deadlines. Working with a Hollywood actor is no different and we were quite excited about it.” The web developing team includes chief programmer Ian Caluscusan and graphics expert Elery Liboon, both from Dumaguete and King Rebotiaco of Bacong.

Original Code Weavers services include Web Developing, back-office BPO, and Web hosting. Their local projects to date include websites of Negros Oriental Arts & Heritage(noahphil.com), Obdulia’s Business Inn (obduliasbizinn.com), Raw Brown Sugar Inc. (rawbrownsugar.com), The Negros Chronicle (negroschronicle.com), and Negor2010.com. Their latest project is Hoysuki.com, a shopping comparison site that offers free online catalog to all types of businesses and is exclusive to Negros Oriental-based entrepreneurs.

Millions of students visit StudentUniverse every year. We have been online for ten years and grown to be the largest online student travel agency in the world. It may also be good to know that we are a member of the American Society of Travel Agents as well as the Better Business Bureau.

We give student, faculty and youth discounts on travel. As a StudentUniverse member (membership is free) you can buy special airfares from our airline partners. Since we verify that our members are students, faculty, and youth the airlines give us special pricing and terms. Other student travel agencies charge more than $20 for a "student ID card." We think that's a bunch of mumbo jumbo - you shouldn't have to pay to get a discount.

PLDT’s consolidated BPO business aiming for double-digit growth rate

MANUEL V. Pangilinan-led Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT) formally announced yesterday the consolidation of its business process outsourcing (BPO) companies SPi Technologies, Inc. and ePLDT Ventus, Inc. into a single company, SPi Global Holdings, Inc.

http://www.bworldonline.com/webpics/articles/image/201008243e42e.jpg
Manuel V. Pangilinan (right), chairman of Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT), speaks before journalists during a briefing announcing the consolidation of PLDT’s outsourcing businesses under SPi Global Holdings, Inc., as Maulik Parekh, president and chief executive of the new firm, looks on. SPi Global is now the largest Filipino-owned business process outsourcing firm with three core units — content, health information management, and customer relationship. -- <i>JONATHAN L. CELLO

“We target to be the premier Filipino-owned BPO company competing with the biggest and most renowned foreign outsourcing groups in the world. Based on the figures from Business Processing Association of the Philippines, the industry had $9.8 billion revenues for 2009 and [will have] $11.6 billion for this year,” Manuel V. Pangilinan, PLDT chairman, told reporters at the sidelines of launching yesterday.

He added: “This is a milestone for PLDT and the country’s BPO industry as a homegrown BPO firm debuts as a globally recognized organization with excellent standing not only in the country but also abroad.”

Executives said the company is structured to be a “full-service” global BPO solutions provider with three core business units -- customer relationship management, content, and health care. SPi Global said it has been serving over 500 clients with more than 14,000 employees and 24 locations in North America, Europe and Asia.

SPi Global also said it has 600 employees in Vietnam, 1,800 in India, and 700 in the United States, the Netherlands, United Kingdom, and France.

“The Philippines hosts a major part of the company’s operations. We have some 11,000 people working in 11 facilities all over Metro Manila and three regional sites in Dumaguete, Iloilo and Cebu,” said SPi Global President and Chief Executive Officer Maulik Parekh.

The firm has so far earned $185 million in revenues and wants to reach $500 million in the next three to five years, he said.

Mr. Parekh said the company would sustain its target growth in revenues by offering clients “diversified solutions” and more acquisitions.

“The clients now want less vendors or less suppliers. We want to provide them end-to-end solutions. We had also invested on the online gaming segment through ePLDT. We hope to offer human resource-related services in the near future,” he said.

He added: “Global competition is intensifying. We have to exploit all the opportunities. But we hope to sustain a double-digit growth in all of our business units.”

Meanwhile, Mr. Pangilinan said there was still a need for more local professionals for positions in the data BPO segment. “Scale is very important. The professionals like engineers being produced in the Philippines are just not enough to supply the demand,” he said.

Neg. Or. bids to host Palaro (http://www.visayandailystar.com/2010/August/25/negor3.htm)
Negros Oriental Gov. Agustin Perdices said he hopes to get the full support of all officials in the province in its bid to host the Palarong Pambansa in 2012 where it will compete with provinces in the Central Visayas.

Perdices said Region 7, which comprises the provinces of Cebu, Bohol, Negros Oriental and Siquijor, will have its turn to host the Palaro in 2012.

Perdices said he is attending today the meeting of the League of Municipalities that will discuss the Buglasan Festival of Festivals in October, the hosting of the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association meet in November, and its bid for the 2012 Palarong Pambansa.

Perdices said he also hopes for the commitment of the local government executives in the CVRAA games, spearheaded by the Department of Education.

He said he is optimistic that the province has enough sporting facilities and accommodations to meet the Palaro requirements.

He also said he will meet the heads of universities in Dumaguete City to seek their cooperation and support.

A few years ago, Negros Oriental lost its chance to host the Palaro games because regional directors of the DepEd noted that the province was lacking in support from the LGUs, Perdices said.*JFP

Supreme Court reverses cityhood ruling

Wednesday, August 25, 2010

MATI, Davao Oriental -- The Supreme Court voting 7-8 on Tuesday reverses its earlier decision affirming the validity of the conversion of 16 municipalities into cities.

The High Court has finally came up with its decision with finality: the 16 cannot be cities, yet, said Mati Mayor Michelle Nakpil Rabat.

The League of Cities of the Philippines (LCP) has questioned the constitutionality of the laws declaring the 16 municipalities into cities.

The LCP questioned the cityhood laws of the 16 towns – Mati, Davao Oriental; Naga, Cebu; Bogo, Cebu; Carcar, Cebu; Baybay, Leyte; Catbalogan, Samar; Tandag, Surigao del Sur; Lamitan, Basilan; Borongan, Samar; Tayabas, Quezon; Tabuk, Kalinga; Bayugan, Agusan del Sur; Batac, Ilocos Norte; Guihulngan, Negros Oriental; Cabadbaran, Agusan del Norte; and El Salvador, Misamis Oriental.

Mati Mayor Michelle Nakpil Rabat admitted having received the information on the final Supreme Court (SC) decision. She expressed grief over the High Court decision but urged her constituents never to lose hope on their cityhood bid as she is hopeful that Mati would still become a city soon.

"We lost, we gave it our best. We fought for our city. It's a sad day for us Matinians. But we have to move on and I still believe that one day soon, we will regain our status as a city," Rabat said.

The legal battle for the cityhood claim was a rollercoaster ride for the League of 16.

On November 18, 2008, the Supreme Court, by a 6-5 vote, nullified the 16 cityhood laws for being violative of the Constitution, specifically its sec. 10, Art. X and the equal protection clause. On March 31, 2009, a divided High Court denied the motion for reconsideration.

On April 28, 2009, the Court, by a 6-6 vote, denied a second motion for reconsideration for being a prohibited pleading. Subsequently, the LGUs filed a motion on May 14, 2009 to amend the April 28, 2009 resolution.

The Court, per its June 2, 2009 resolution, declared the May 14, 2009 motion adverted to as expunged in light of the entry of judgment made on May 21, 2009. The LGUs subsequently filed a motion for reconsideration of the June 2, 2009 resolution.

Then on December 21,2009,, the Supreme Court, by a vote of 6-4, has reversed its November 18, 2008 decision and declared as constitutional the Cityhood Laws or Republic Acts converting 16 municipalities into cities.

The SC then stated that all 16 cityhood laws, enacted after the effectivity of RA 9009 increasing the income requirement for cityhood from PhP20 million to PhP100 million in sec. 450 of the Local Government Code (LGC), explicitly exempt respondent municipalities from the said increased income requirement.

Dumaguete famous landmarks and tourist attractions

After about 5 hours of road travel from Bacolod with our trusty van, we arrived in Dumaguete, fondly known as the “City of Gentle People”. Compared to most Visayan cities such as Bacolod or Iloilo, Dumaguete is less crowded. The first thing I noticed about this city is its simple laidback atmosphere, no wonder it attracts many foreign tourists and visitors – not much traffic on the road, with a charming town-like environment. Many tourists are attracted to Dumaguete because of its accessibility to nearby natural wonders, beaches and dive sites. One such popular diving destination is Apo Island, one of the world’s best known marine sanctuaries (with over 600 documented fish species and 400 varieties of corals), which can be accessed by a 30-minute boat ride from the coastal town of Zamboangita, south of Dumaguete. The nearby town of Bais is also known for dolphin and whale watching, while tThe caves of Mabinay and the white sand bar in Tanjay are also popular tourist destinations.

Dumaguete is recognized as a “university town” and “the center of learning in the south” with many educational institutions around. It is well-known for Silliman University, the Philippine’s first Protestant University and first American private university in Asia. Another notable educational institution is Saint Paul University, the first university established in the Philippines by the Sisters of Saint Paul of Chartres (SPC) from France.

Here are some of the famous landmarks, tourist attractions and points-of-interest in Dumaguete and nearby municipalities Sibulan and Valencia:

The Claire Isabel McGill Luce Auditorium, the largest fully-functioning theater outside of Metro Manila, was built in 1973 and completed in 1975.

In 2008, the Luce Foundation provided additional funds to refurbish the Auditorium, updating its facilities to meet the strictest standards in theater. Work on the premises was completed in August 2008. The University works to maintain and preserve the Luce Auditorium as a center for Culture and Arts in the Visayas-Mindanao region, and to continuously cultivate and promote the passion of theatre, music, dance, and other forms of art expression among the students of the university as well as the larger community.

Mayors assure support for Buglasan
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

Preparations for this year’s Buglasan Festival of Festivals are now on high gear with assurance of support from most local chief executives in Negros Oriental.

Various concerns had been raised by the mayors at their regular meeting yesterday, attended by Gov. Agustin Perdices and the Buglasan directorate represented by Glynda Descuatan and Nick Elman.

The concerns include the mobility of participants, especially the mayors, who claim that their vehicle passes are not honored by traffic enforcers, and the very crowded Sidlakan booth area.

The mayors are also apprehensive about spending for Buglasan activities due to auditing problems. Most of the time, they have to dip into their own pockets.

The mayors have been receiving P25,000 each from the provincial government since the inception of the Buglasan Festival to defray additional expenses they incurred but it was not known if this is receipted or subjected to COA auditing procedures.

The mayors are asking Perdices not to stop the practice and he promised to look into it.

Some municipalities cited scarcity of funds as the reason for non-participation in the festival showdown. Last year, 13 LGUs participated, and this year, only seven have, so far, committed to participate, namely, Dumaguete, Jimalalud, Zamboanguita, Bayawan, Mabinay, Sibulan, Pamplona, with a subsidy of P50,000 each. The others have committed to participate in other Buglasan festivities.

Nick Elman, co-director of the Buglasan directorate said the festivities will officially start on October 14 and ends with a fireworks display on the 24th and the “Kasikas sa Kalye,” where local bands are assigned in different areas of the city.

The idea is to disperse the activities throughout the city, not just the Sidlakan area.

Meanwhile, the Negros Oriental Negrense Awards will continue, but Perdices wants another category that is intended to give recognition to the rank and file.

Dubbed the Negros Oriental Service Awards, Elman said this will give recognition to farmers, fisherfolk, janitors, waiters, waitresses, who have excelled in their work.*JG [VisayanDailyStar (http://visayandailystar.com/2010/August/26/negor4.htm)]

HS student crowned Miss Silliman 2010
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

For the nth time, the High School Department representative of Silliman University was crowned this year as Miss Silliman in the hotly-contested beauty pageant of talents and wits Tuesday, at the jampacked and biased crowd at the Lamberto Macias Sports and Cultural Center in Dumaguete City.

Ela Luzuriaga Clavano bested 12 other equally beautiful and talented beauties from other departments and also hauled in three other minor awards, as Ms Photogenic, Best in Talent, and Best in One-on-One interview.

Her court includes Ms Nursing Marian Vanslembrouck who was 2nd runner-up and Ms MedTech Aesha Eleyna Amigo Villanueva as 1st runner-up.

Villanueva also garnered three minor awards: Best Speaker, Best in Pre-Hispanic attire and Best in Filipino attire.

The Darling of the Press award went to Ms Law, April Joyce Seville, Ms Congeniality to Ms Performing Arts Kimberly Ann Cual Cimafranca, while Ms Computer Studies, Feb Navarro Rodriguez, was adjudged Ms Professionalism and Best in Casual Attire.

Former Miss Silliman beauty queens posed the questions and one of the more interesting ones were on the August 23 hostage-taking crisis in Manila Monday.

The chairman of the board of judges is also an Outstanding Sillimanian Awardee this year, Lucy Jumawan Sauer.

The beauty pageant this year was a production of the Silliman University Student Government on the theme “Ang Pagsibol Ng Bagong Filipina”.*JG [VisayanDailyStar (http://visayandailystar.com/2010/August/26/negor5.htm)]

Catch the Silliman University Kahayag Dance Troupe give a tribute to dance pioneer Lucy Jumawan in a special Silliman Performs concert today, August 26! There's a matinee at 3 PM and a gala at 8 PM. Tickets still available!

====

For more than five decades, Mrs. Lucy Patromonio Jumawan Sauer has been an innovator and catalyst for dance development in both the Philippines and Australia. “I hope that someday, people will understand where I am coming from,” she has said. “That dance is very important because it comes from the soul, and that there is a division between performance and entertainment. It’s nice to do the traditional. If you are learned, trained, and you have the ability to incorporate, then do it. There is no limitation. Through time, you find your skill and you become wiser and always aspire for a higher standard.”

Mrs. Sauer was a student of Silliman University, a graduate of its grade school and high school. She discovered an affinity for dance at an early age. By the time she was 17, she had already established her own dance studio—the Lucy Patrimonio Dance School. She studied classical ballet with the Anita Kane School in Manila from 1954-1957, and soon she was making her graceful way to the heart of the country’s dance scene. She grabbed the sought-after role as a soloist dancer in Swan Lake and The Nutcracker, dancing with Alexandra Danilova, then one of only four of the world’s most renowned prima ballerinas, at the Araneta Coliseum in 1957.

Later, she honed her classical ballet with Margaret Craske at Jacobs Pillow Dance University in Lee, Massachussetts from 1968-1969, where she also studied mime and movement, stage craft, and dance composition. She later studied modern dance with Norman Walker in New York, and between 1972 and 1974, she took up contemporary dance and jazz at the Bodenweiser Dance Center in New South Wales in Australia.

Back in 1959, she was director and choreographer of the Foundation University Dance Company. She also soon became the founder and directress of the Dance Department of the School of Music at Silliman University, where she worked from 1962 to 1972, and founded the group that is now known as the Kahayag Dance Troupe. A Ford Foundation scholarship in 1962 gave her an opportunity to do research on the tribal dances of Datu Tangkilan, the Royal Sultan of Zamboanga del Norte. She focused on the unseen dance traditions of the Suban-on Muslims in Mindanao, with special permission from the Datu. She collaborated on the project with other Sillimanian dance and music luminaries such as Bobbie Vista, Albert Faurot, Miriam Palmore, and Zoe Lopez. This enabled Mrs. Sauer to discover other forms of dances, which she later incorporated in her teachings. One distinguishing mark of her career as a dance teacher is that most of her outstanding ballet students soon became members and soloists of the Philippine Bayanihan Dance Company.

In 1972, she was guest performer of the Philippine House Consulate at Canberra in honor of Australian Prime Minister Gough Whitlam. That year, she was choreographer and director of the Philippine Dance Performance in the First Folkloric Festival at the Sydney Opera House. In 1976, then First Lady Imelda Romualdez Marcos presented the Department, under her directorship, a plaque of appreciation for its involvement in pioneering classical ballet in the Visayas and all over the Philippines.

When she soon moved to Australia, she involved herself in various socio-cultural projects, appearing as guest for a variety of TV shows in Sydney and in New Zealand. She became a teacher for Black Theater in Red Fern, New South Wales, and for the Sydney Dance Concert Group and the Bodenweiser Dance Center. She became actively involved with Australia’s Aboriginal people because of her love for Aboriginal arts and ethnic dances. She considered herself an “Aboriginal woman,” and worked closely with aboriginal elders to record their dance traditions. For thirty years, the aboriginal people gave her permission to come to their sacred places prohibited to the rest of the world. As part of her study of Aboriginal dances, she was allowed to go to Mornington Island, a very remote part of Australia where there is no talking, only strong eye contact.

In 1977, she was choreographer for Australia’s participation in the World Indigenous Dance Festival in Nigeria. In 1979, she was artistic director of the Aboriginal participation by the National Aboriginal and Islander Dance Theater in the International Dance Festival in Africa. She was featured in 1979 as the Migrant of the Year in a documentary presented on SBS Televison. She is also the founding director of Bodenweiser Dance Center’s Dances of Asia, the Philippine Arts and Cultural Society of Australia, and the Cultural Arts International and Association of Asian Artists of Australia. She is the managing director of the Contemporary Dance Association in Umina Beach, New South Wales. Throughout her years of influencing people with her art, one of the various recognitions she received was being selected as one of the Great Women of the 21st Century by the American Biographical Institute.

Mrs. Sauer believes that her education at Silliman has instilled in her a form of discipline, which she considers as “the rock that knocked off the stumbling blocks in my professional life.” From the words of Manny Diel in his “Who’s Who?” column, Mrs. Sauer, indeed, is an “icon of the Philippine performing arts—very intelligent, highly spiritual, and an inspiring woman that Filipinos should be proud of.” (Jeahan Virda De Barras with Ian Rosales Casocot)

Millions of students visit StudentUniverse every year. We have been online for ten years and grown to be the largest online student travel agency in the world. We offer 24/7 customer support and we have more than 30 airline partners.

Negros Oriental’s BUGLASAN FESTIVAL and the country’s first Festival of Festivals.

http://negrostourism.com/wp-content/themes/negrostourism/library/timthumb/timthumb.php?src=/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/buglasan1.jpg&w=678&zc=1

In olden times Negros natives and residents of nearby islands referred to our island as BUGLAS. Two accounts attempt to explain the origin of the name. One is that it derives from an upheaval during which the island was ripped off (buklas) from a larger land mass. The other is that the predominant vegetation on the island at that time were tall napier-like reeds called buglas.

While anchored in Bohol in 1572, Miguel Lopez de Legaspi’s attention was captured by the island and he sent a crew to reconnoiter it. The crewmen encountered dark-skinned natives and thereafter renamed the island NEGROS. However, a map dated 1572 and attributed to a member of the Legazpi expedition, Diego Lope Povedano, shows Negros Island labeled BUGLAS INSULIS.

In 1981 Foundation University and the Balikatan sa Kaunlaran – NCRFW Negros Oriental Chapter staged a competition in cooperation with the Provincial Government to determine the Province’s delegation to the First National Folk Arts Festival organized by Imelda Romualdez Marcos. Among the event’s consultants was Bayanihan Founder-Choreographer and later National Artist for Dance, the late Lucresia Reyes-Urtula. Dubbed BUGLASAN FESTIVAL in memory of the island’s beginnings, when its cultural character began to take shape, the event comprised booth presentations, indigenous culinary competitions, and street dances and field presentations of various local cultural productions that had evolved into modest festivals. In recognition of the unique and distinct nature of each one, the competition was called the FESTIVAL OF FESTIVALS.

The five LGUs that participated in the first Buglasan Festival, along with their entries, were: Siaton (Inagta and Palihi), Zamboanguita (Polka Biana), Dauin (Kasal Kadauinonan), Tanjay (Sinulog) and Manjuyod (Amamaranhig). The first four contingents composed the Negros Oriental delegation. On Dr Urtula’s instance, the Palihi was chosen as the opening number of the First National Folk Arts Festival at the Folk Arts Theater.

In 2002, the Provincial Board passed Ordinance No. 15 adopting the BUGLASAN FESTIVAL as the Province’s annual Provincial Fiesta to be held every October. With the support of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts and the Department of Tourism, BUGLASAN is produced by the Negros Oriental Culture and Arts Council assisted by the Negros Oriental Tourism Council, the Negros Oriental and Dumaguete City Divisions of the Department of Education; the Negros Oriental Hotels, Resorts and Restaurants Association, the Sidlakang Negros Producers Association, the Sangguniang Kabataan, the Sidlakang Negros Association of Tourism Officers, and several sports and extreme games organizations.

Strict guidelines ensure that the staple events promote research and unique cultural values while showcasing the creativity and talents of the Oriental Negrense. The competitions are designed to involve all sectors and age levels. Among these are the Buglasan Balak and Balitaw, Children’s Choir, Folk Dance, Modern Dance, Dancesport, Rondalla, Duet and Quartet, and Live Band. The Lutong Garbo sa Sidlakang Negros competition presents the culinary treasures of Negros Oriental. The Buglasan Tourism and Agri Fair features theme booth presentations projecting the LGUs’ finest tourism and agricultural products. Buglasan peaks with the Festival of Festivals Streetdance and Field Presentations (above left) where the spectacle and exciting rhythms of champion contingents from over 20 festivals in various stages of development can be experienced in one venue.

These festivals complete most of the fiestas of the Province. They are basically celebrations of thanksgiving for bountiful harvests of land and sea. Most of these are secular (non-religious) in nature: SANDUROT (Dumaguete City), TAWO-TAWO (Bayawan City), YAG-YAG (Barangay Cangmating, Sibulan, right, Champion of the 2003 National Streetdance Competitions), LANGOB (Mabinay), SIPONG (Bais City), KAPAW (Basay), KINAIYAHAN (Dauin), BAULAN (Zamboanguita). Legends related to local patron saints and religious practices are the heart of MASULOG (MASLOG, Sibulan), SINULOG DE TANJAY (Tanjay City), HAMBABALUD (Jimalalud), LIBOD-SAYAW (Bindoy), PASAYAW (Canlaon City), AYUQUITAN (San Jose), BUDYAS (Amlan), and PAKOL (Santa Catalina).

Two of Negros Oriental’s biggest festivals are school-based, eclectic in nature, and driven by themes determined yearly by the organizers: the relatively new HUGYAWAN-DALANSAYAW of Negros Oriental State University; and the Kasadya-an December Festival of Foundation University, at some 60 years the longest-running festival of Negros Oriental and the longest mardi gras parade in the Province.
The Buglasan Festival of Festivals brings all these together for a “one-stop shop” of Negros Oriental’s achievements in cultural advancement and creativity.

The Province’s annual cultural calendar is packed with pageantry and dramatic expressions of religious fervor and civic pride.

About 600 runners have joined the Silliman Run 2010: Run to Educate held at The Terraces in Ayala Cebu. Could have been more if it had not coincided with the Aboitiz Run held at South Reclamation Project. Those who joined are from the alumni and different running groups in Cebu. Father Tropa's Zoo Paradise of the World
Zamboangita, Negros Oriental

The Zoo Paradise of the world is situated in Barangay Salngan in the town of Zamboangita, Negros Oriental. It was spearheaded by the late Eleuterio Tropa, who formed his own religious sect cum environmentalist group who called themselves “The Lamplighters”.

The mission and motto of their organization is to “love one another and love nature”. All members were once required to don black shirts paired with red and green striped pants. Cutting of hair was prohibited for both men and women and nobody was allowed to wear slippers. They all actually walked around barefoot even when they visited the city, catching the attention of many.

The zoo, also called Spaceship 2000 ET is an extensive ipil-ipil forested area enclosed by a perimeter fence. Inside you can find birds of varied species and zoo animals such as a snake, a tiger, crocodile and some monkeys. Members of the sect walk around freely to feed and pet the animals.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v487/blank14/spaceship2000-2.jpg

Zoo Paradise of the World Founder

Father Tropa was an active environmentalist with the good of everybody always on top of his concerns. He led a very simple life with only the basic amenities with hardly ever a room for luxuries. Father Tropa was also a staunch believer in the healing properties of nature such that he and his members concocted herbal medicines to treat whatever ailments they suffered from. The Zoo Paradise of the World was his personal mission. It is a unique manifestation of the life that he had chosen to live – one that was far from civilization.

When Father Tropa died in the year 1993, all of his personal effects and memorabilia became added an element of interest in the zoo. Also preserved are stuffed wild animals that are larger than life. The zoo has a small shop where you can find handmade odds and ends that make for souvenir items. At present, the surviving relatives of Father Tropa have taken on the operations of the zoo and have continued to uphold the legacy that he has left behind.

SILLIMAN ZOO

a.k.a.

AY Reyes Zoological and Botanical Garden

SILLIMAN ZOO is a mini forest and the home of the Center of Tropical Preservation (Centrop). This forest serves as a captive breeding ground for some of the country's endangered and endemic species like the Visayan Spotted Deer, Philippine Brown Deer, Philippine Crocodile, Visayan Tarictic Hornbill, Negros Bleeding Heart Pigeon, Reticulated Pigeon, Visayan Warty Pig, Long Tailed Macaque, and Flying Fox (giant fruit bats).

For years now, it has been making conservation efforts for the survival of these species. Some of the offsprings from these captive breedings were distributed to different partner zoos around the world for a greater chance of their survival while some were released back to the wild.

This mini forest is also made up of a collection of different species of trees around the country.

VISAYAN SPOTTED DEER

http://img842.imageshack.us/img842/1166/21911965.jpg

One of the most threatened deer species in the world. Now extinct in the islands of Cebu, Guimaras, and Masbate and found only in the remaining forest patches of Negros and Panay islands.

They are herbivores feeding on flowers, berries, grasses, and fruits. Males are differentiated from females by their horns called "antlers".

Conservation Status: ENDANGERED

PHILIPPINE CROCODILE

http://img828.imageshack.us/img828/6729/98275170.jpg
http://img825.imageshack.us/img825/2931/82107169.jpg

looks small in the picture but actual size could be from 7 to 10 feet long

The Philippine crocodile is one of the most severely threatened species of crocodiles. The species persist as isolated individuals and small populations in Mindanao, Negros and Mindoro. Confirmed sites include Nabuntaran, Calarian Lake, Macasendy marsh, Liguasan marsh (Mindanao) and the Pagatban river (Negros). Current wild population size may be no more than 100 non-hatchlings.

PHILIPPINE BROWN DEER

http://img844.imageshack.us/img844/6263/11306258.jpg

The Philippine Brown Deer is originally restricted to the Philippines but was later introduced into the Marianna Islands. It can be found throughout most of the country but hunting caused this species' number to decline. Local extinction has been reported in Catanduanes and Biliran.

VISAYAN WARTY PIG

... actually just 3 little pigs probably hiding from the big bad wolf

The Visayan warty pig is a little-known, small, forest-dwelling pig that has only recently been recognised as a separate species. Historically found throughout the Visayan Islands, this species is now extinct over at least 98% of its former range, with the few surviving populations confined to fragments of remaining habitat on the islands of Negros and Panay.

VISAYAN TARICTIC HORNBILL

http://img841.imageshack.us/img841/7281/44987632.jpg

One of the smaller Philippine hornbills found only on the remaining patches of Negros and Panay islands.

They are omnivores, feeding on fruits, insects, and smaller mammals. They are important pollinators and seeds dispensers, which is a vital role in forest regeneration.

Conservation Status: ENDANGERED

NEGROS BLEEDING HEART PIGEON

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2072/2091385428_4a1315d5bf.jpg?v=0

This endemic bird species can be found in lowland dipterocarp and primary forest areas.

It is distinguishable from other bleeding heart pigeons by its elongated red streak.

Its wild populations are limited to the remaining forest fragments of Negros and Panay. With these continuining habitat loss on these islands, the Negros bleeding heart pigeon is now critically endagered.

RETICULATED PYTHON

the snake is not clearly visible as it is covered with a tinted glass to simulate its dark habitat

It is the longest of the python snakes, with lengths up to 33 feet!

It is the most widespread python species in the world. However, its wild population is heavily threatened by the illegal wildlife trade of its skin, blood, and gall bladder which are used in traditional medicine practices.

These animals are usually killed when encountered by humans.

LONG-TAILED MACAQUE

http://img843.imageshack.us/img843/2122/s10r.jpg
where's the macaque?

These primates are found in primary, secondary, coastal, mangroves, swamps, and forest in Southern Indochina, Burma, Indonesia, Philippines, and India's Nicobar Islands. Because monkeys are naturally tolerant with humans, they may also be found near villages.

Although not endangered, wild populations are severely threatened by habitat loss and illegal pet trade.

Flying fox or fruit bat is endemic to the Philippines and that it is found no where else in the world. This specie is held in captivity only at two facillities in the world which are the Lubee Foundation and CENTROP at the Silliman University in the Philippines.

Status: Declining due to habitat destruction, but still fairly wide-spread and stable

The beauty pageant this year was a production of the Silliman University Student Government on the theme “Ang Pagsibol Ng Bagong Filipina”.*JG

Health agencies in Negros Oriental push for facility-based delivery

DUMAGUETE CITY, Aug. 29 (PNA) – The Department of Health and the Provincial Health Office of Negros Oriental are strongly pushing for women to deliver their babies at hospitals and similar facilities rather than at home to reduce the province’s incidence of maternal deaths.

At a recent forum, Dr. Edgardo Barredo, PHO field services chief, disclosed that the province is targeting to reach to reduce maternal deaths by 10 to 12 yearly so that it can achieve one of the eight Millenium Development Goals by 2015.

Such MDG is to improve maternal health in the country by reducing maternal mortality to 82 per 100,000 live births or by 75 percent by 2015, according to Barredo.

Health records in Negros Oriental showed that 23 women died at childbirth in 2007, 28 in 2008 and 29 in 2009, said Barredo.

The doctor expressed sadness over the incidence of maternal mortality in the province, citing an incident during which a pregnant mother died because a midwife could not reach her in time due to heavy rains and flood which prevented her from crossing a river.

According to Barredo, 55 percent of the province’s deliveries are at facilities while 45 percent take place at home.

Further, 61 percent of pregnant women are assisted by skilled birth attendants, such as doctors, nurses and midwives, while 49 percent are assisted by traditional birth attendants, he added.

The IPHO and DOH are now focusing on facility-based delivery with the province receiving funding from the European Commission, he said.

Barredo said some local government units, such as Zamboanguita and Valencia, have established lying-in clinics or what he terms as basic emergency obstetrical and neo-natal care for the women.

Over in Guihulngan City, the hospital district there has a P25-million budget to allow for caesarian sections and blood transfusion.

The DOH also gave P87-million for the construction of a high-rise building at the Negros Oriental Provincial Hospital to start by December, this year. (PNA)

Political and Cutural Origin

The expedition of Ferdinand Magellan that arrived in the Philippines on March 16, 1521, and the succeeding expeditions in the following decades, has not been able to reach the island of Negros. It was only in 1571 or fifty years later when Legazpi came that the Spaniards discovered the island of Negros. Historical accounts compiled by Prof. Caridad Aldecoa-Rodriguez, a renowned local historian, have in her book, "“Negros Oriental and the Philippine Revolution”, that while anchored in the island of Bohol, Legaspi dispatched a frigate to reconnoiter the coasts of the islands that were visible from that point.

Legaspi and his men found the natives inhospitable, but there were plenty of food in the island. It was during the time of Legaspi that distribution of big tracts of land (encomiendas) to 15 encomenderos residing in Cebu and Iloilo was done. Three of the encomiendas were the Rios de Tanae (Tanjay), “Davi” (Dauin) and “Monalongon” (Manalongon) in the southern part of Negros Oriental. Tributes collected were, however, sent to Cebu or Iloilo governments where funds of Negros were administered. It was in 1734 when a separate military district government was established in the island.

As settlements in Negros Oriental continually grew and swelled out to other points along the coast, the sugar cane plantation expanded just as fast. Meantime, the government officials who resided in Bacolod could hardly cope up with government functions and rarely visited the Oriental part due to the inadequacy of roads and difficulty in communication facilities. Consequently, the socio-economic life of the Oriental Negrenses suffered a great setback. There was a pressing need for more officials to supervise closely government functions such as strengthening defenses against devastating Moro raids, apprehending and trying criminals, and opening of more curacies. A petition to separate Negros Oriental from Negros Occidental was presented to the Governor General, recommending the town of Dumaguete as capital. Thirteen years later, Governor General Valeriano Weyler, in compliance with a royal decree dated October 25, 1889, established Negros Oriental as a separate province on January 1, 1890 with an estimated population (the Negritos living in the hinterland had no accurate counts) of 94,782 consisting of 17 towns of Guihulngan, Jimalalud, Tayasan, Ayungon, Manjuyod, Bais, Tanjay, Amlan, Ayuquitan, Sibulan, Dauin, Nueva Valencia, Bacong, Dumaguete, Zamboanguita, Siaton and Tolong. The appointed Politico-Militar was Joaquin Tavera.

The new province left no time concerning itself with local administration and development. Public works and other needs of the towns were attended to with public funds. A court of peace was put up in every town and, at the provincial capital town, a Court of First Instance. But in the later part of 1898, Negros Oriental rebel forces, under the leadership of Don Diego de la Viña, succeeded in driving the Spanish forces and government officials from all towns. On November 25, 1898, the Provincial Revolutionary Government of Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo was established in Dumaguete, the capital town, with Don Demetrio Larena as Presidente.

On April 9, 1901, the Second Philippine Commission under the Chairmanship of William H. Taft, arrived in Dumaguete. On May 1, 1901, the civil government under American rule was established. On August 28, of the same year Dr. David S. Hibbard founded Silliman Institute now Silliman University.

In 1924, Hon. Herminigildo Villanueva was elected Governor and a Capitol Building was erected. The province experienced real war in a grand scale when World War II broke out in December 1941. The war, aside from the physical devastation wrecked throughout the province, also left painful scars, which up to this date remain unhealed. But the people came out stronger and more determined. However, the people found out that the political independence they gained did not equate economic independence and self-sufficiency. The struggle for the improvement of the quality of life still remains a quest for every Negrense along with the rest of the Filipino nation. Ninety years after 1901, the Local Government Code of 1991 (LGC) was made into law and took effect on January 1, 1992. With the advent of the LGC, a new era in local government finance and administration of reelectionist Governor Emilio C. Macias II spearheaded Negros Oriental in the development of the ‘90s.

Ethnic Origin of the People

When the Spanish explorers landed in Negros Oriental in 1565, they found natives who called the place “Buglas”, named after a kind of tall grass resembling the present-day sugar cane plant. Buglas grass was then abundantly growing in the island. The Spaniards encountered many black people with black kinky hair among the inhabitants, they called the island Negros. Kabilin, a book on provincial history, edited by Merlie Wenceslao and Bobby Villasis, mentions what seemed to be the first known documentary reference to the island of Negros appears in an atlas drawn in 1545 by the renowned Spanish cartographer Alonso de Santa Cruz (c.1490-1567). Santa Cruz’s map bears the legend y de Negros, probably derived from reports of the presence of small black people (negritos) on the island. Thus, a score of years before the Legaspi expedition, the Spaniards already knew the island of Negros by this name. At that time, there were two (2) types of forest dwellers, the black natives called Ata or Agta (Negrito) and the Proto-Malay also known as Bukidnon with dark brown skin.

Along the coastline dwelt the natives of Malayan heritage who were engaged in little agricultural activities and barter trading with the Chinese and other Asian merchants who came as early as the 13th century. Although no written documents have been found, artifacts and relics belonging to the Sung Dynasty period in the 12th century were excavated in the towns of Bacong, Bayawan (now Bayawan City) and La Libertad in Negros Oriental and Escalante in Negros Occidental. This indicates a flourishing trade and commerce with other neighboring countries such as China, India and the Malayan peninsula.

The Legend of Leon Kilat

http://ic2.pbase.com/o6/53/614653/1/70344532.o47kje0v.DSC07791.JPG

Years after there deeds, heroes turn into monuments and myths. In the collective imagination, their acts of valor and sacrifice are transformed into the works of men and women possessing wondrous talents, mystical powers, and magical amulets. They themselves become larger than life, even larger than the movie screen.

Pantaleon Villegas was just an ordinary man from a town called Bacong in Negros Oriental. He once worked in Cebu for a German pharmacy owner and had experience as a jock in horse racing. The Cebuanos whom he met described him as convincing in his speech, well manned, respectful, approachable, sociable and talkative.

Pantaleon was also quite an acrobat. In his anti-Spanish revolutionary activities, the skill came in handy. With the circus as front, he and his companions were able to meet without being held suspect by the Spanish authorities.

He seemed ordinary enough except that his sister, Silvestra Villegas-Tindoc, swore that he could swallow the blade of a long dagger up to its handle and fold the dagger with one hand while turning a gold coin into powder in another fist.

An unnamed person also attested to having seen Pantaleon Villegas ride Alladin-like on a handkerchief on his way to Cebu. Even the men who fought under him in the 1898 Revolution claimed that his numerous amulets rendered him invulnerable to bullets.

Pantaleon’s death was no less bizarre. Like the Biblical Christ, he also died on a Good Friday.

The tide of war turned against Cebuano insurrectos on the Maundy Thursday of 1898. In the afternoon of that day, Pantaleon Villegas and other Katipuneros marched weary and wounded to the southern Cebu town of Carcar. They arrived in Carcar in the evening.

Pantaleon was billeted in the house of First Capitan Municipal Timoteo Barcenilla. A banquet was held to celebrate the revolutionary leader’s arrival.

Unknown to Pantaleon, a group of the town’s elite wanted him dead. They feared, among others, bombing from the Spanish gunboat Paragua.

It was a certain Apolinario Alcuitas, said to be Pantaleon’s right-hand man, who did the honors of stabbing him at dawn. Bullets, it was said, could not hurt Pantaleon, only by a dagger’s cold steel. And Alcuitas was careful to remove the casulla-like anting-anting from the sleeping revolutionary leader before forcing the dagger into his chest.

So it came to pass that the revolution in Cebu temporarily lost a leader and the man from Bacong, Negros Oriental became Leon Kilat, Cebu’s Lighting General.

Dance: Polka Biana
Meaning: Polka dedicated to Biana
Dance Culture: Lowland Christian
Place of Origin: Zamboanguita, Negros Oriental
Ethnolinguistic Group: Visayan
Classification: Social
Performers: Male, Female

Polka Biana or “Polka dedicated to Biana” was a dance dedicated to a Zamboanguita lady named Biana who was fat lady. Ironically, the Polka Biana does not present heavy or big steps that may fit the fat lady but the insertion of waltzes after two signatures have been incorporated to cater to the size and stamina of Biana, considering that she cannot sustain a continuous dance of polka.

Negros Oriental’s BUGLASAN FESTIVAL and the country’s first Festival of Festivals.

Silliman Hall is the oldest standing American structure in the Philippines. Its architecture is reminiscent of the Stick Style or Victorian type of architecture that characterize American buildings in the 19th century. Some of the materials used to build it were salvaged from an old theater in New York. The present structure was built in 1909 as an addition to the original structure built in 1902, now demolished. It now houses the University's Anthropology Museum.

The Dumaguete Belfry

http://www.panoramio.com/photos/original/21111349.jpg

In the year 1811 when Dumaguete was a place whose inhabitants were always threatened by Muslim marauders in search of slaves, the Bell Tower was then built to forewarn the locals of any incoming danger. It remains to be the oldest bell tower in the Visayas and is a very famous architectural landmark in the city.

Dumaguete BelfryLocated along the main Perdices Street right next to the St. Catherine of Alexandria Cathedral fronting the Rizal Park, it is an imposing stone structure that certainly calls for the attention of many passersby. Because of its antiquity and authenticity it may well look out of place in the midst of the city’s modern day activities. But although it has been restored and given some additions over the years like the garden and grotto of Our Lady of Perpetual Help at its base, it has retained its ancient look right down to the now moss covered exterior walls.

Also a new addition is the small boutique cum souvenir shop, only just a few steps away from the tower, which sells all sorts of religious icons, spiritual reading materials, rosary beads, candles and other related stuff. This is just one of the evidences of the strong influence that the Spaniards had made on the Filipinos during their regime. A great majority of the city’s population is deeply Catholic, the very religion that Spain brought into our country.

Due to its proximity to the Dumaguete city public market and the downtown area, traffic around the Bell Tower tend to be heavy on the peak hours between 9 am and 5 pm. The place is generally always packed with people, milling about near its base. Devotees regularly light candles at the grotto area to profess their faith or to say their prayer requests. Some just stop over to pay a curious visit.

The St. Catherine of Alexandria Cathedral -- a byword to the Dumaguete Belfry -- is also another historical monument. It is the largest church in the city and was built the same year that the Bell Tower was. With a gilded and ornate altar, high ceilings and hanging chandeliers, the church is a grandiose display of traditional European architecture. The façade is also worthy of praise, having undergone a recent restoration in the year 2005. The brick stone pathway lends an old world feel, much appropriate for perhaps a lady with a Spanish lace veil over her head emerging from a horse drawn carriage.

The Oldest Tree - Canlaon

http://mw2.google.com/mw-panoramio/photos/small/16846284.jpg

There has been one too many strange tales about the 1,328 year old Balete Tree (known as Lunok in the Visayan dialect and Dalakit in Cebuano) that stands amid the rice and coffee plantations of OISCA Farm in Lumabao, Canlaon City. The oldest recorded tree in the province and perhaps even in the country, this tree has been a lone witness to Canlaon City’s progress and evolution.

The Wonder Balete

Today they call it the “wonder balete” because of the mystery that hovers around its existence and why it has been isolated from all the other Balete trees as if picked out and planted on just this one specific spot. Every night, curious travelers could not help but gaze in awe at a now-illuminated tree – the doing of many hundreds of fireflies that have come to take refuge in its wide and sturdy branches. Thus, another title – Canlaon’s all year round Christmas tree. From a distance, the tree would look somehow enchanted.

The Wonder Balete is now one of Canlaon City’s major tourist destinations, drawing attention from foreigners, travelers, and the media. After all it is the only known tree that has lived for over a thousand years. Its trunk is so enormous that it would take a total of 42 individuals to link outstretched hands together just to be able to embrace it. The diameter of the tree is estimated to be more than a hundred centimeters. At the heart of this wide tree trunk is an alcove where lizards, bats and many insects have made it into their natural habitat.

Folklore has it that many spirits dwell in this mysterious old tree. Filipinos with a strong background on superstitious beliefs and traditions would always mutter a respectful word or two to request for permission to touch its bark, to walk around it or even just to inspect it closely. It is believed that provoking the spirits can cause you great harm and illness.

Only 7 LGUs to join Buglasan?

Confidence remains high that this year’s Buglasan Festival of Festivals will be at par, if not surpass its previous staging despite initial reports that only 7 out of 25 Local Government Units are certain of joining the much anticipated annual provincial October fest.
The seven LGUs are Dumaguete City, Jimalalud, Zamboanguita, Bayawan City, Mabinay, Sibulan and Pamplona. Most of the towns and cities cited budgetary constraints for their reduced or non-attendance.

Tayasan Mayor Santiago Sameon claims it only has P 10,000 left in its coffers, while other LGUs served notice that their participation might be limited. The Buglasan Committee has given the LGUs until 15 to make the final decision whether to participate or not in this year’s fest.
The provincial government will provide P 50,000 as aid to the first 15 towns that will signify intention to participate during the weeklong festivities, but the overall budget of P 3 million will be divided among the participating LGUs should there be less than 15 entries.

City acquires P5M water laboratory

Boosting the drive against the spread of waterborne diseases and at the same time relieving agencies of high expenses in examining water samples, the Dumaguete City Water District inaugurated its P 5 million water laboratory as the highlight of the agency’ 33rd Anniversary.

City Water District General Manager Esperato Dicen said that with the laboratory, the examination of the water samples can be sped up and less costly. Sanitary Inspectors before would travel to Cebu City just to have water samples tested for presence of any bacteria that may cause water-borne diseases that may lead to death, in some cases.
Both Governor Agustin Perdices and City Mayor Chiquiting Sagarbarria are hopeful that with the water laboratory here, the quality of our drinking water across the province can be efficiently monitored.

City to convert market to mall?

Dumaguete City Mayor Chiquiting Sagabarria is eyeing the demolition of the Buildings 8, 9 and 10 of the City Public Market to give way to the construction of a three-storey mall-type edifice that will maximize the use of the city’s prime property just behind famed Cathedral’s Bell tower.

The 3-storey mall that will replace the soon to be demolished Buildings 8, 9, and 10 will feature vegetable and fruit products in the first floor, office spaces for rent for the 2nd floor, while the 3rd floor will house the rooms of the City Livelihood Center.

The administration expects to realize this endeavor within its first term as some stakeholders hope that such a move will trigger the re-conceptualization of the city public market. As a way to decongest the city central market, some stakeholders suggest that new mini-markets selling basic commodities be established in clustered barangays for the convenience of the buying public.
However, City Market Enterprise Supt. Engr. Ronnie Fortin believes it will not work. He cited as an example the Daro Satellite Market, which did not last.
“That satellite market was supposed to answer the need of decongesting the city center but people did not patronize it and continue to flock to the central market,” said Fortin.
He adds, “If the new administration will revive the idea of a satellite market, I would strongly suggest to reopen Daro’s.” He noted that the land (1 hectare in size, where the market used to stand has been donated to the city government but is now occupied by squatters. (By Dems Demecillo)

SU offers new PE subject: boxing

http://dumaguetemetropost.com/clients/dumaguetemetropost/8-22-2010-7-51-06-PM-4864251.JPG

Silliman University is now offering a new course in Physical Education: boxing, with instructor, the world-famous coach Joe Clough.

Clough is teaching the fundamentals to non-P.E. majors, including the stance, jabbing, slipping, throwing crosses, uppercuts, hooks, feet movement, and the ability to spar with one another.

“All students will have a first-hand appreciation of how discipline and dedication are required to be successful in this very demanding sport,” he said. “They are learning self-defense and becoming more confident with a higher level of self-esteem as they acquire the skills. The young collegians are learning to lead a healthier lifestyle in the process.”

Coach Clough, named USA boxing coach in 1972, 1976, 1977, was hired by Muhammad Ali for his gym at Sta. Monica, California.

Clough also trained the boxers of the Philippine National Team in 1986 at his gym in Florida.

He was also responsible for training Olympic gold medal winners Sugar Ray Seales in Munich (1972), and Leo Randolf at Montreal (1976); and has produced many other national and world amateur boxing champions like Johnny Bumpus and Rocky Lockridge.

Coach Clough’s Tacoma Boys Club in Washington has been recognized as one of the finest clubs to produce outstanding, champion quality boxers.

Before coming to Negros Oriental, Coach Clough was based in Thailand where he was teaching P.E. to youngsters for nearly 10 years.

He is also currently involved in creating the Negros Boxing Academy, which will begin teaching the skills to youngsters.

Joining Coach Clough at Silliman are Fred and Hedi Block of the National Federation of Officials & Clinicians of the USA, who are also teaching part of P.E. 21 Introduction to World Boxing.

Hedi Block teaches technical and competition rules of the Association Internationale de Boxe Amateur, which governs all Olympic-style boxing worldwide.

Fred Block teaches the history of boxing, from its ancient first documented existence 10,000 years ago.

Their aim is to engage the academic and social side of the students who will be taught to pass the AIBA Certification Examination, and one day be involved to foster the growth and health of amateur boxing in their communities after college either as referees, judges, time keepers, jurists, administrators, or inspectors.(Hedi Kerns Block)

Robinsons to franchise 'Go Hotels'

GOKONGWEI-LED Robinsons Land Corp. is planning an aggressive expansion of its budget hotel brand Go Hotels for the next five years, officials said on Friday.

To facilitate the opening of 30 new branches, Go Hotels, which targets casual and business travelers, has opened its doors to franchising.

“Due to high demand for excellent accommodations, gohotels.ph is now welcoming offers from parties who are interested to franchise or sell their land," Liz D. Gregorio, general manager, said in a statement on Friday.

On Friday, the property developer formally launched Go Hotels' flagship branch, a 223-room hotel occupying the fifth and sixth floors of the 17-storey prime office condominium Robinsons Cyberplaza at Pioneer Center in Mandaluyong.

“We now have 30 malls, theoretically we know we have 30 locations where we could build in,” said Frederick D. Go, president and chief operating officer of Robinsons Land.

Shares in listed Robinsons Land, whose profits grew by 11% in the first half to P2.59 billion due to mall expansion, closed at P15.00 each on Friday from P14.42 on Thursday. -- Neil Jerome c. Morales

SU’s living legend
By Romeo Capilitan

http://dumaguetemetropost.com/clients/dumaguetemetropost/8-29-2010-7-57-01-PM-7411706.jpg

A living legend came out “punching and kicking” at the luncheon for Outstanding Silliman Awardees at the Silliman Hall on Saturday.

Segundo Maravilla, 91, got the spotlight after the moderator of a brief program Moses Atega called him to represent the 1938 HS Class. This was the year when Silliman Institute just became a University.

Maravilla who is still active in farming in Kabankalan, Negros Occidental delighted his fellow Sillimans by shadow boxing and flexing his muscles to show off his vitality and durability.

Asked about the secret of his youthful vitality, Maravilla professed, “by the grace of the Lord.

He was the best swimmer in his days at Silliman. He excelled also in boxing and javelin throw.

At his age when most of his contemporaries have gone ahead, he said he is missing his friends in Silliman like the late PE Director Procopio Velasco. He walked back to his chair to the marching tune of rah rah siz boomba led by Atega.

Joining the spontaneous joyous celebration were the 2010 outstanding awardess—Romeo Ariniego for Medicine, Lucy Jumawan-Sauer for Dance, Evangeline Bravo Manjares for Commumity Work, and Evelyn Tan Requiza for Educaation and Historical Research.

SU President Ben Malayang and BOT Chairperson Juanita Dy Amatong also gave recognition to outgoing BOT members Julio Sy and Madison Villavito during the occasion.

Robinsons Land to build 30 budget hotels in 5 years

MANILA, Philippines - Robinsons Land Corp. (RLC), the property development arm of the Gokongwei Group, is aiming to build at least 30 budget hotels across the country over the next five years to meet the growing demand for affordable accommodation, particularly by local tourists.

At the same time, RLC president Frederick Go announced that the hotel brand, Go Hotels, is now open for franchising, pointing out that they have already received inquiries from several interested parties. One businessman, whom Go refused to identify, is already looking at five sites for his planned foray into the value hotels business.

Go said since the soft opening of Go Hotels in its pilot site at the Robinsons Pioneer Cybergate complex in Mandaluyong City, the hotel has been registering an occupancy rate of more than 90 percent.

“We’re very confident about this development plan that we intend to take this throughout the country. There is huge demand for proper accomodation and we intend to open branches in every city of the country,” Go said.

The next Go Hotels will rise in Bacolod and Dumaguete (both in 2011). Programmed for opening in 2012 are hotels in Palawan, Iloilo, Cebu and Tacloban. New sites for 2013 are Pangasinan, Ilocos Norte, Zamboanga, Batanes and Gen. Santos.

Built on the lot of the old Robinsons Apartelle, Go Hotel Pioneer offers 225 no-frills rooms with flat-screen television and free Wi-Fi connection targeted for budget-conscious travelers. Patterned after sister company Cebu Pacific’s novel pricing scheme where early birds get the lowest rate, Go Hotels is offering accommodations for as low as P388 a night. Regular room rates start at P1,888 per night.

Go said they intend to build Go Hotels in areas where RLC has a shopping center. As of end-March this year, RLC had a mall network of 29 with a gross leasable area of 811,000 square meters.

Go Hotels is the fifth hotel property of RLC after the 285-room Crowne Plaza Galleria Manila, 263-room Holiday Inn Galleria Manila, 210-room Cebu Midtown Hotel and the 108-room Summit Ridge Hotel Tagaytay.

In the fiscal year ending September 2009, RLC’s hotel division registered revenues of P1.04 billion or about 10 percent of total revenues.

Holiday Inn Galleria Manila and Crowne Plaza Galleria Manila posted occupancy rates of 77 percent and 72 percent, respectively, despite the global economic slowdown that has cut holiday travel.
