national guard September 4th, 2010, 09:11 AM One-stop shop eyed for NegOr businesses
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE
The establishment of a business one-stop-shop in Negros Oriental to be set-up in Dumaguete City is being worked out, after a meeting called at the Department of Trade and Industry provincial office with representatives from various local and national government agencies, from the city and provincial governments, and the private sector.
Present at the workshop were DTI regional director Ester Caberte and City Mayor Manuel Sagarbarria who offered to provide space for the one-stop-shop of the province to be anchored in Dumaguete.
Caberte said President Benigno Aquino III was very emphatic in his instructions and marching orders for the DTI to set up business one-stop-shops in each province within the first 100 days of his administration, and DTI was lucky it has the full support of Sagarbarria and Gov. Agustin Perdices.
In Bohol, the business one-stop-shop is managed by the Bohol Investment Promotions Center and DTI is hoping it will have a similar arrangement, she said.
Under the set-up, the SSS, PAG-IBIG, PhilHealth, BIR and other agencies concerned will be housed in one venue.
In Cebu, a registrant comes out of the venue after 45 minutes already armed with documents for the start of his business.
She said that, with continuous improvement and streamlining of the whole system, some LGUs are even hitting below 30 minutes.
The one-stop-shop means less signatories, less processing time, and that could result in increased tax-based revenues.
Under the system, DTI is trying to embed a client satisfaction feedback, Caberte said.
The project is expected to be launched next month.*JG

jundem_dq63 September 4th, 2010, 08:07 PM Delicious destinations in Dumaguete
By Joy Angelica Subido
http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/9616/lif35.jpg
MANILA, Philippines - Dumaguete City is a great alternative destination where one can wind down after the frenetic pace of active sports, parties and summer vacation fun. Its laidback pace, greenery, expansive spaces and proximity to scenic spots and diving destinations are part of the attraction. But, unquestionably, it is the friendly citizens and interesting mix of native and introduced cultures that greatly add to the city’s charm.
Known as “the city of the gentle people,” Dumaguete’s name seems to have been derived from a word with less than peaceful connotations, however. “Daggit” in a local Visayan dialect means “to snatch or seize,” and local lore relates that marauding pirates once pillaged the coastal settlement, taking with them villagers as prisoners and slaves.
Thus, the belfry of the St. Alexandria Cathedral once served the dual role as a bell tower and lookout, so that residents could be warned of impending danger. Fortunately, the main risk to visitors today is that they are usually enticed to stay longer to indulge in the city’s diverse delights.
http://img265.imageshack.us/img265/5571/lif35b.jpg
We were in Dumaguete recently to sample its various attractions and were pleased with what we found. Silliman University and its wide avenues lined with century-old acacia trees is particularly appealing, not only for its extensive library or museum with fascinating relics of both indigenous and foreign culture, but also for its famous cheese bread.
“You should try it when it is fresh out of the oven,” said Mark Garcia, director of the university’s information and publications office, while encouraging us to more servings of a delicious mid- morning sampling of two varieties of bibingka, sweet mangoes and budbud kabog, a suman that is made from millet. Seated at the verandah of the building that housed the museum and enjoying a view of Rizal Boulevard and the ocean beyond, we sipped a thick, delicious tsokolate-eh to go with the native cakes and secretly wished for a hammock. We started to comprehend that Dumaguete nurtures poets, artists and dreamers because one has the luxury of introspection and imagination in this calm, quiet and friendly place.
It was from native delicacies to European-inspired sweets and at Sans Rival Cakes and Pastries, named after the confection, that we enjoyed the local version of the meringue and butter cream sans rival dessert (P25 per slice). The outlet’s silvanas, pieces of round-shaped meringue enclosing a butter cream filling were truly outstanding at P10 a piece. These were not overly sweet, and were rich, crisp, chewy, and buttery all at the same time. Definitely these were best quality goodies at prices hard to beat. Not surprisingly, the pastry shop started by Trinidad Teves Sagarbarria in 1977 continues to attract an enthusiastic and loyal following.
http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/5895/lif35c.jpg
lthough we certainly love desserts, we had to eat proper meals. On this trip, we enjoyed the seafood and grilled meat at Lab-as Restaurant, contemporary cuisine at South Sea Hotel’s Likha Tapas and Vodka Bar and Mexican fare at Mooon Café in Robinsons Place mall. The callos at Mamia’s along Rizal Boulevard was also truly outstanding. And, if an after-dinner stroll along Rizal Boulevard should get the gastric juices going again, a variety of local street food can be sampled until late in the evening.
Alternatively, there are other establishments that serve Swiss, Spanish, Italian, American, Korean, Chinese and other types of cuisine throughout the city.
Admittedly, however, it is difficult to resist the call of the mall. And so, we went off to explore Robinsons Place Dumaguete, the city’s first full-service mall opened in November last year. With two levels and a floor area of approximately 34,000 square meters, the mall has the usual areas for restaurants and al fresco dining, apparel and fashion, cinema and amusement, as well as service and IT zones.
What caught our attention, however, was what was called the Artist’s Alley, which had paintings for sale. “This is just one way of supporting our local artists,” said Joseph Sian, Robinsons Malls group property manager for Robinsons Place Dumaguete, Robinsons Place Bacolod and Robinsons Cybergate Bacolod. He notes that local singers and bands also occasionally perform in the al fresco dining zone.
http://img685.imageshack.us/img685/7307/lif35d.jpg
How does a mall affect the culture of Dumaguete? “Apart from providing a venue for family bonding, we make shopping more convenient for both locals and those who reside in nearby towns,” continued Sian. “Malling is a new activity in this area, but the variety of competitively priced, good-quality items sold in our various outlets make us a preferred shopping destination. Our supermarket, for example, carries items that would otherwise be hard to get in the area.” Certainly, this is a bonus for Dumaguete’s growing expatriate community and lifestyle and food-savvy residents.
For us, however, an unexpected surprise was to be had at Robinsons Place’s Booksale outlet: pristine copies of Jack Kerouac’s The Dharma Bums and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas by Hunter S. Thompson for a food-for-the-brain grand total of P160. Yum! Even the book choices in Dumaguete are delicious!
jundem_dq63 September 4th, 2010, 08:14 PM Top musicians to facilitate songwriting camp in Dumaguete
For five days in November, more than two dozen respected and renowned artists and practitioners from the Philippine music industry will come to Dumaguete, Negros Oriental to share their talents and experiences through case studies, interactive outdoor sessions, music games, group activities, and one-on-one consultations.

Set against the city’s beaches and forests, Elements aims to gather aspiring and professional songwriters from various disciplines and provide them with a venue to learn, collaborate, interact, and create music in a natural setting.
A total of sixty aspirants will be accepted to be the first batch of Elements participants. There are twenty slots each from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao that will be made available. The process of selection will be through online application and live auditions. It will be handled and overseen by Maestro Ryan Cayabyab and his working team of distinguished songwriters.
The application period is from 20 July to 22 August 2010. The final list of participants will be announced on 22 September 2010. All news, information, and updates can be accessed through the official camp website at http://www.7101musicnation.com.ph.

Speakers, lecturers, and team facilitators include such luminaries as Jim Paredes, South Border’s Jay Durias, Side A’s Joey Benin, Joey Ayala, Noel Cabangon, Gary Granada, Gary Valenciano, Chito Miranda of Parokya ni Edgar, Gabby Alipe of Urbandub, Sponge Cola’s Yael Yuzon, Jonathan Manalo, Jungee Marcelo, Trina Belamide, and many more.
7101 Music Nation is an organization dedicated to the development of programs and platforms that will serve to discover and enhance local artistry in music. Our aim is to highlight the Filipino Artist through various educational/entertainment activities and events that will be held annually in Dumaguete. It is under the auspices of the Taos-Puso Foundation. The company is the brainchild of three individuals who gathered together because of a shared passion for music —Julio D. Sy, Jr, Ryan Cayabyab, and Twinky Lagdameo.

jundem_dq63 September 6th, 2010, 02:10 PM Escaño boulevard cleared of vendors
Lest he be suspected of driving away vendors because of his nearby restobar along Escaño beach, Dumaguete City Mayor Chiquiting Sagarbarria clarifies that the decision to clear the beachfront is in response to the residents passionate request and the city’s long-term plan to develop it into a second tourist boulevard similar, if not, better than Rizal.
Sagarbarria lamented that Flores Avenue is no longer under the control of the city being declared part of the port zone. The option left now is to develop the Ecaño beachfront connecting it to Rovira Road, another major road artery, exiting at the old GSIS building to become the city’s northern boulevard. Corollary to this, another boulevard in the south will be built from Calindagan up to Mangnao.
The neophyte mayor envisions of the city having three boulevards: north, south and Rizal as the central boulevard.
Dozens of vendors along Escaño beach, who primarily sell alcoholic beverages, have urged the mayor to extend their stay beyond the August 31 deadline given by the Piapi Barangay administration.
However, the mayor maintains that area is not intended for commercial purposes and nearby residents have petitioned the barangay officials complaining of their presence. He stressed that the vendors ought to be removed for the maintenance of sanitation and peace and order. (By Dems Demecillo)

MANILA, Philippines - Convergys Corp., the largest business process outsourcing (BPO) provider in the country, has upgraded its contact center in San Lazaro, Manila to hold approximately 2,400 employees.
Located near Manila's University Belt, Convergys' San Lazaro facility now has 6 floors that can house 1,500 seats compared to only 2 floors a year ago.
It boasts of executive and administrative offices, training and conference rooms, a recruitment center, as well as employee lounges throughout its 139,000 square feet of workspace.
Marife Zamora, Convergys Philippines country manager, said the company has experienced "phenomenal" growth in the last few years, prompting continuous expansion.
"Continued high demand for Philippine-based services will allow as to continue to expand our footprint in the country in the future," she added.
Since 2008, the company has opened 5 new contact centers in the country and provided over 8,000 jobs.
Zamora said they are eyeing to increase workforce to around 25,000 by year-end. They may also start operations in new sites.
She said the company is still scouting for strategic sites, but these would most likely be in the so-called "next wave cities" for BPO.
Among the next wave cities identified by the Business Processing Association of the Philippines (BPAP) are Davao, Sta. Rosa in Laguna, Bacolod, Iloilo, Cavite, Lipa in Batangas, Cagayan de Oro, Malolos in Bulacan and Dumaguete.
Currently, Convergys employs 22,000 Filipinos in 12 sites across the Philippines that now handle as much as 188,000 inbound calls per day.
The company serves international clients in industries such as financial services, collections, retail, healthcare, and telecommunications.
Recenlty, it activated a new state-of-the-art command center in Manila that has the capacity to monitor and manage huge call volumes coming into its contact centers and through its communications network around the world.
The command center is one of three for Convergys. The other two are located in its home base, Cincinnati, Ohio; and in Gargaon, India.
The BPO industry posted P7.1 billion in revenues during the first quarter of 2010, according to the BPAP.
BPAP estimates that industry revenues will rise to P9.3 billion by the end of the year.

ponsing1983 September 7th, 2010, 05:55 PM City creates task force to run after unlawful businesses
DUMAGUETE CITY, Sept. 7 (PNA) -- Businesses operating illegally in Dumaguete will be checked with the impending creation of the so-called Task Force SAGARR.
The task force will enforce existing city ordinances, especially with regards to permits, Mayor Manuel Sagarbarria said.
The mayor said Task Force SAGARR will conduct a door-to-door campaign to rid the city of unlicensed businesses, separate from the mandate of Task Force Syudad, market task force as well as the anti-indecency board.
It will be composed of key personnel from the city treasurer’s office, city accounting, city engineer’s office, fire, Philippine National Police, and the like.
However, the group needs a separate vehicle for its operation, and will be requesting the city council for an appropriation in this endeavor.
SAGARR means Special Action Group Advocating for Rapid Reforms, which will also check on the boarding houses regarding compliance of requirements, sanitation clearances, fire and building code. (PNA)
^^ First on their list is Jundem’s Ukayan. I heard it owes the city millions in back taxes. Heed P-Noy’s call my friend, be a responsible citizen!

Something Modern in Dumaguete City
By RONALD JAYME
September 7, 2010, 9:39am
Visiting Dumaguete City is like traveling back to an old world that seems to have remained eternally serene and charming. Old fashioned lampposts line Rizal Boulevard, which is the city’s answer to Manila’s Roxas Boulevard. The buildings found in the universities, especially Siliman University, feature American colonial architecture. Even the friendly locals still exude a genteel vibe.
With its colorful history and reputation as a center for universities, the capital city of Dumaguete has successfully evolved into a progressive force in the Negros Oriental province. One contributing factor is the presence of Robinsons Place Dumaguete, the first full service mall in Dumaguete City. Situated in the Dumaguete Business Park along Calindagan corner South Roads, Robinsons Land Corporation’s (RLC) two-level shopping mall, which was formally opened late last year, has become a major catalyst, providing a one-stop shopping experience in a modern and beautiful setting.
“Locals and those who reside in nearby towns flock to the mall regularly not only to shop but also for their family bonding,” says Joseph Sian, Robinsons Malls’ group property manager for Robinsons Place Dumaguete (as well as Robinsons Place Bacolod and Cybergate Bacolod). “The other features of the mall like the al fresco area, which is accessible to moviegoers, the fast food court, and the brightly lit atrium are among the popular spots for our shoppers. The cinemas are always jam-packed especially during special screenings and previews.”
Spanning a total gross floor area of over 40,000 square meters, Robinsons Place Dumaguete has endeared itself to the Dumagueteños’ relaxed and casual lifestyle with its wide, airy spaces, high ceilings, and abundant natural lighting. Dumaguete’s landscape of mountains and beaches also makes a dramatic backdrop for the Mall’s al fresco area.
Being the first full service mall in Dumaguete City, it boasts of a complete mix of shopping, dining, entertainment, and specialty options for the Dumaguete’s residents. The city’s rich culture and overflowing talents of its “gentle” people are showcased in Robinsons Place Dumaguete, particularly with events that empower the local community. It is now the venue of choice for school functions, and exhibits.
Even with Dumaguete City’s efforts for modernity, its hints of worldliness will always be present. This perfect balance of the old and the new is what continues to captivate many locals and tourists alike to this charming city.

I am just curious... Physical Therapy and Medical Technology are under School of Clinical Laboratory? Why it was still named as School of Clinical Laboratory?.....
I thought it is College of Clinical Laboratory...:lol::lol:
nicko September 8th, 2010, 07:51 PM They are new names. Both used to be under CNAHS ( College of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences) but since Nursing separated from that banner, then so did PT and MedTech. The three are now separate from each other, all in their own independent banner/school. PT now is School of Rehabilitative Sciences, MedTech is now School of Clinical Laboratory Sciences, and Nursing remains to be as the College of Nursing.. :)

Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres
The Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres (SPC) Congregation was founded in 1696 by Fr. Louis Chauvet, the parish priest of Levesville-La Chenard which is a small village southeast of Chartres, France.
Father Chauvet’s vision of charity was shared by his first followers and entrusted their training to Mademoiselle Marie Anne de Tilly, a lady of nobility and an active member of the parish who left a life of comfort “to serve God and neighbor”.
The difficult circumstances of the French Revolution, occasioned the spread of the Congregation to other places. Their primary activity was to educate young girls and to visit and care the poor and the sick.
On October 29. 1904, seven Sisters of the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres established its first foundation in the Philippines in Dumaguete, Negros Oriental. Instituto de San Pablo became the first of more than a hundred mission houses they would open in their first 100 years in the Philippines.
Since then, they had spread to different parts of the country of about 70 institutions including hospitals, sanitarium, and home-for-the-aged under its helm making it the largest religious/educational/health organization in the country. There are 39 schools, 11 health care facilities, 10 pastoral centers and 9 houses under the Provincialate.

Have you been to Sans Rival Cakes & Pastries in Dumaguete? Have you tried their silvanas and sans rival? Sans Rival Cakes & Pastries is famous for their luscious silvanas and sans rival and they make the best cakes and sweet delicacies in town. The shop is located near the Rizal Boulevard. The shop first opened in the year 1977. It was owned by Mrs Trinidad Teves-Sagarbarria, her daughter Chining now runs and operates the business. Sans Rival Cakes & Pastries was the oldest bakeshop in Dumaguete. Long before it was built, the family just make sans rival and silvanas only for the family and friends and since it was really good and with some advices of friends and relatives they decided to start a business, that is the Sans Rival Cakes & Pastries in Dumaguete and because there was a large clamor for their cakes, they expanded with more branches of The House of Silvanas in the country and eventually opened 2 branches in California where they have since taken up residence. The location of their branches The House of Silvanas were in Alabang Town Center which is in Muntinlupa, at Glorietta 4 in Makati City, and at Shangri-La Plaza in Mandaluyong City. The other 2 branches were in Carson City and Daly City which are both in California, USA. In Dumaguete, when the first time I've been to Sans Rival with my mom, I remembered that I ordered their famous silvana and my mom ordered sans rival and we both liked it and decided to buy some for take out. A silvana is a frozen cookie made with a layer of butter cream sandwiched between two cashew-meringue wafers, coated with cookie crumbs. Some describe it as a cookie version of the sans rival. We really loved their specialty and during weekends we used to buy silvanas and sometimes cakes for desserts. Sans Rival Cakes & Pastries is not only good in making silvanas and sans rival but they also make delicious and the best cakes. They bake different cakes, all are so pleasing to the eyes and mouthwatering. Of all their cakes, my favorite was their Date & Walnut Dacquoise but it's a little expensive than the other cakes they sell. I also like their Mango Cloud Cake, Concorde Cake, Black Forest Cake, Tiramisu Cake, Blitz Torte or Brazo de Mercedes, and their cheesecakes. If cakes are not your thing, you can also try their pies, i'm telling you their pies are good. The also sell some sweet goodies like cookies, and they also sell spaghetti and a lot more. Though the shop is small and they have limited tables and chairs, still the ambiance is great. The shop is actually air-conditioned so you will really feel comfortable while eating. they also have friendly staff, fast service and clean restroom.

Chez André, founded by French André Estoursy, is now owned by Abrazo Corp., which is composed of local entrepreneurs.
“We will be conducting more promotional and marketing programs. The franchisees can also do some marketing on their own,” said Jing-jing Mariño-Farrarons of Abrazo Corp.
Farrarons said Chez André has grown significantly from the time Abrazo Corp. acquired the company, brand and recipes from Estoursy. From the seven franchised outlets and one company-owned pizzeria under Estoursy, the new owners now manage a network of branches spread located in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

Too bad Chez Andre went down the drain after it was franchised. The original store closed a few years ago :ohno:. The branches in Carcar, Cebu and Bacolod didn't survive either; don't know how the other stores are doing. I dined once at their branch in F. Ramos, Cebu City and it was disappointing. They used cheap, poor quality toppings on their pizzas.

I walk a lonely road
The only one that I have ever known
Don’t know where it goes
But it’s home to me and I walk alone
I walk this empty street
On the Boulevard of Broken Dreams
Where the city sleeps
and I’m the only one and I walk alone
I walk alone
I walk alone

Rizal Boulevard
Dumaguete City
Boulevard…… ohhhh yes, just a mere mention of the name and an imaginary breeze of fresh air would suddenly whiffed and caressed you face. Ahhh... the touch of nature, so cool, so invigorating. freshly blown straight from the sea, a captivating panorama of the Tanon Strait, nothing but clean body of sparkling water, bluish as it reflects the clear sky hovering above. On the backdrop of this natural painting are two magnificent islands, Siquijor, the "island of enchantment" and the Queen City of the South sitting majestically on its throne, Cebu.
Rizal Boulevard is the Dumaguete City’s famous beachfront boulevard and promenade, where folks from all walks of life converge and flock for a leisurely stroll during sunset or a picnic under the majestic acacia trees. The whole stretch is decorated with charming colonial-era inspired light posts, cobblestone pathways, and features a few of the city’s surviving historic sugar mansions. This is Dumaguete's window to the world.
On the pages of history, the National Hero, Dr. Jose Rizal had written on his diary that he had made a stopover in Dumaguete while on his way to Dapitan where he was deported. It has been said that he had made a brief visit and took a stroll here before departing to the neighboring island of Dapitan, Dipolog City where he was exiled for four years following the Spanish authorities’ suspicion that he was about to lead a revolution. While walking, he was awed by the seaside view and the friendliness of the locals, which led to the belief that he was the one who coined the “City of Gentle People” monicker of Dumaguete. Legend or no legend at all, the beauty of the place is for real and could never be denied.
The life on this boulevard started even before the rising of the great ball of fire on the eastern side. Throngs of people have already line-up at dawn doing their thing; jogging, strolling, meditating, or just sitting along the seawall and zealously gulping the virgin air; unspoiled and freshly delivered by Gaia a.k.a. Mother Nature. Oh what an enthusiastic way to greet the new day.
Noontime, the sun smiling and intensely radiating its beams. Just below the horizon, between the marriage of the sea and the sky, fishing boats are floating for a day’s work, yet all look so small, just like dots on a vast extent. That will be the view if you are gazing on the distant boulevard. Yet while viewing on a high noon beyond the simmering heat, one could never feel the burn, because if you will just only raise your head and slowly look up, you could see the strong arms of the acacia trees mightily shielding you from the heat. And if you will just also kindly look further, you could see that there’s an army of them lining up along the baywalk together with the palm trees. Their leaves boastfully act like a cloak, a safe refuge from the cancer causing sultriness.
But when one would assume that there’s nothing more left to tell and the show is finally over, whew-whew-whew-w-w-w-w-wait!!!!! Wait till night comes coz this is the time when all of its beauty is revealed, when all of its splendor is highlighted. Lights!! And the trees are wrapped in glowing lights, the halogen lamps are brightened, a reminiscent to the early century street lightings. On the other side of the road, restaurants with foreign themes are on a line. Take your pick, Japanese, French, Mexican, Chinese, American, hmm… quite a sumptuous meal but in a highly social and classy act. Well if you’re on a tight budget and prefer to eat your food with your fingers or maybe in a bamboo stick, then you could have a buffet of tempura, squid balls, kikiam, or balut for stronger knees. Now that is one gastronomic feat. And finally to cool down or heat up more, there are beers in the bars or disco your night away.
It’s funny how one could find beauty in simplicity. Where calesas still roam the streets. Where people smile and could find others familiar even just seeing them for the very first time. Where one does not have to shed lots of dough just to experience fun. Where one does not have to worry too much on security. Where it is garbage free and one could talk and be care free. Such an escape from the grueling big city life.
Along this boulevard, writers were able to write creative stories. Along this boulevard, romance blossoms among inspired hearts. Along this boulevard, an alliance among friends were forged. Along this boulevard, memories were created.

what date is this? Great if it's next week, as I'll be there already.
I am in SM Hypermarket right now, just next to Tiendasita's. We bought a condo in Hampton Gardens just walking distance (by Manila's standards).
There are a couple oif T-cranes constructing this right now; still a long way from completion though.

DUMAGUETE CITY, Sept. 9 (PNA) -- The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) District 79 here again ranked the highest in tax collection in the entire Revenue Region 12.
According to Revenue District Officer Cresencio Agad they were thankful to have maintained the number one standing in the region but it was not a reason to be complacent.
RDO-79 collected a total of P835 million in the past eight months, up P217 million from P618 million a year ago and exceeded the P709 million collection goal by P126 million, or 17.81 percent.
RDO-79 covers the entire province of Negros Oriental and the neighboring province of Siquijor.
Agad also thanked the taxpayers who honestly paid the right taxes according to what was mandated by law. He also believes that the continued tax campaign, education and information program have contributed to the success of the tax collection effort.
The RDO-79 has a total target collection of P1.1 billion for this year. Based on the present tax collection data, they are expected to collect at least P265 million from the months of September to December in order to achieve the target goal.
Agad said they collect an average of P80 million per month.
The RDO chief said the P265 million can be achieved considering the expected economic boost in Negros Oriental due to the upcoming Buglasan Festival and University Games in October. (PNA)

national guard September 10th, 2010, 12:38 PM Negros Urged to Highlight Black Beans
September 10, 2010, 4:07pm
DUMAGUETE CITY (PNA) – Another variety of black beans called “tabios” that is commonly grown and produced in the municipality of Dauin, Negros Oriental is now being pushed as one of the highlights in the celebration of Kinaiyahan Festival of the said town.
Negros Oriental State University (NORSU) president Henry Sojor, who was the guest speaker during the event, emphasized on the importance of the local variety of “tabios” and moringa or malunggay since these are widely produced in the town.
He said moringa has been identified as the miracle vegetable of the world that has been developed into capsules, tea, and herbal medicine.
He said “tabios” is one of the common dishes served during fiesta celebrations in Dauin. It is best served when cooked with pork fat.
During some occasions, it is also served with coconut milk paired with grilled dried fish and steamed corn grits.
Sojor challenged the local officials of Dauin and the trainers to include in their presentation the importance, qualities, and impact of local black beans or “tabios” and moringa in the culture, history and economy of Dauin.
The state university president who also hails from Dauin further said that black beans or “tabios” and moringa production are among the common sources of livelihood of the people in the community aside from fishing.
Dauin held its 7th year Kinaiyahan Festival celebration in honor of their patron Saint Nicholas de Tolentino.
According to Kinaiyahan Festival chairman Vice Mayor Rodrigo Alanano, the festival started in 2002 with its first name Sinangyaw (sangi-sayaw), but it was later changed into Kinaiyahan Festival in 2003 for purposes of social marketing strategy of the marine sanctuary and forestland.

nicko September 11th, 2010, 03:21 PM Bits of info on La Residencia's renovation: A friend, who's a major suki of Don Atilano and Wakagi said to me that they will make the Wakagi area into an al fresco area.. They will open up the ceilings of the area to open it to the smokers as well. It seems that they will turn that area into a full-fledged coffee shop.. But the question still remains on what company/brand will take over since he himself, being a major major friend to every crew in there, is also clueless because no one will reveal it to him.. Hmmmm.. But he thinks that there is also a possibility that La Residencia will still be the one to operate it.. yet he also hopes for a new brand of coffee shop to operate there...:)

Linguine September 12th, 2010, 04:29 AM Go Hotels: Back to basics

The first branch of Go Hotels is located at the fifth and sixth floors of Robinsons Cybergate Plaza along EDSA in Mandaluyong City.
MANILA, Philippines - What can P400 buy these days? A new pair of shoes, maybe, or the latest paperback bestseller. There are a number of possibilities, but a night’s stay at a decent hotel may not be one of them — until now.
Imagine an air-conditioned room, with a 22-inch LCD television, and free wireless Internet access for only P388 a night. It’s a dream made a reality by Go Hotels.
Dubbed the first chain of value hotels in the Philippines, Go Hotels has a variable pricing scheme much like Cebu Pacific’s budget fares. With this system, booking early will result in a lower rate for a room, while walk-ins will be charged a higher fee.
http://img684.imageshack.us/img684/2964/travel7b.jpg
Guests have four breakfast options: (clockwise, from top left) Go Fish (boneless bangus with rice and egg), Go Healthy (yogurt, cereals and fruits), Go Pinoy (beef tapa with rice and egg), and Go West (ham, egg and cheese with fries).
Early bookings can be charged as low as P388, while walk-ins can be charged as much as P1,888 for an overnight stay.
“What we have done is to give you everything that is important to a traveler and excluded everything that you hate or that you don’t really need — for example, the mini-bar that you don’t even touch anyway. We don’t provide you with extra extras that you have to pay for, but you don’t really need,” said Frederick Go, president of Robinsons Land Corp., at the grand launch of Go Hotels last Sept. 3.
Go Hotels has no frills. No mini-bar, no room service, and no bottles of shampoo. There is no telephone, but there is an intercom in every room.
What the hotel does provide is a one-use sachet of shampoo, a tiny one-use bar of soap, two bath towels, and a choice between chiropractic-contoured pillows and hypoallergenic fiber-filled pillows, said Liz Gregorio, general manager of Go Hotels.
She added that every yellow and green-themed room has either twin beds or one queen-sized bed. Rooms also have a desk, and both a rainshower and handheld showerhead. Chairs come with the desk in rooms with a queen-sized bed.
http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/6163/travel7c.jpg
Each Go Hotels’ room is equipped with quality bed with choice of hypoallergenic fiber-filled pillows or chiropractic-contoured pillows and offers Wi-Fi and use of safety de-posit box.
But perhaps one of the most important considerations in staying in a hotel is the bathroom. Go Hotels’ toilets are top of the line, and the bathroom is spacious.
Another consideration is eating inside the rooms. Gregorio said the practice is discouraged partly to keep the rooms clean.
“Every floor, the 5th and the 6th, where the rooms are, has an eating area with seats and tables in the lobby,” she said, adding that the eating areas have a seating capacity of 30 to 50 people, and that they never have a problem because the guests don’t eat at the same time.
Guests aren’t complaining either. An American visiting the Philippines is staying at the hotel, and he said, “The staff is doing good. I have no problems with the hotel.”
Indeed, the staff members in their yellow and green-collared shirts were very attentive and helpful. The staff attire at the hotel is casual and breeds an atmosphere that makes the hotel employees seem very approachable.
“We are very confident and positive about this development that we hope to take this around the country,” said Frederick Go, adding that Robinsons Land Corp. is planning to open hotels in every province in the country to address the huge demand and lack of proper accommodation for travelers.
Pasig City Mayor Benjamin Abalos Jr., in his speech at the hotel launch, said Go Hotels is promoting local tourism by offering such cheap rates.
“People will flock to the provinces instead of going abroad,” he said, adding that in the wake of the tragedy at the Quirino Grandstand, “We must help our country.”
The first branch of Go Hotels is located at the fifth and sixth floors of the 17-story Robinsons Cybergate Plaza, beside Robinsons Mall Pioneer, along EDSA.
Robinsons Land Corp. is planning to open 30 more hotels in the next five years, starting with branches in Bacolod and Dumaguete in 2011, Palawan, Iloilo, Davao, Tacloban, and Cebu in 2012, and Ilocos Norte, Butuan, Zamboanga, General Santos, and Pangasinan in 2013.

ponsing1983 September 12th, 2010, 05:05 PM 50 City dads to Boracay work-holiday!
by: DEMS REY DEMECILLO
Is there such thing as work-holiday? Yes Virginia, there is at the city hall. The prospective September 23-26 field trip to Boracay of some fifty Dumaguete City officials which will be led by Mayor Chiquiting Sagarbarria, Vice-mayor Alan Gel Cordova, city councilors and department heads is under heavy fire from critics for what they called an extravagant and unnecessary “workholiday” courtesy of P350,000 in taxpayers’ money. Some described the “work conference” as a PR blitz of the new administration for old and new city hallers.
Several members of the business and academic communities assert that if they really mean to work, they can hold the Executive-Legislative Agenda in a respectable and conducive place even in a Bahura or Antulang setting.
But no, the Sagarbarria- Cordova administration wants to spend people’s money in La Carmela de Boracay from September 23- 26. The city administration will spend P 350,000 in a world-class resort but it is hoped that the results would be world-class, too.
Who is behind this fantastic workshop-holiday, which will not only set a precedent but might become the norm? Asks one academic.
Says one travel agent:
Why patronize Boracay, when the money can be wellspent in respectable resorts in Negros Oriental like Bahura, Antulang and Apo Island that are among the places frequented even by foreign tourists and Manila elites.
In defense, Mayor Chiquiting Sagarbarria underscored the need to push through with the trip to ensure that the participants of the workshop, designed to chart the course of the new administration, can fully concentrate on their tasks and at the same time learn how Boracay was turned into a world-class haven for tourists.
“It’s like hitting two birds with one stone. For the participants, it’s both a workshop and a Lakbay- Aral,” the mayor stressed.

^^
If I may ask, what aspects of Boracay's success do they intend to replicate in Dumaguete? Oh I get it, our city has white sandy beaches too and I bet they're building a resort at the boulevard where tourists can drive jet skis, go parasailing or dip in the clear, blue waters...Wow! Our country's coffers have been bled dry by the past administration and this is how the city's current set of leaders spend hard-earned taxpayers' money :ohno:. Astounding!

psyche September 12th, 2010, 06:17 PM Carcar: A Gem of a Town

Charlie Kemplin, president of United Tourist Promotions, the makers of EZ Maps, and I were just about finished mapping (using the Global Positioning Satellite or GPS technology) a substantial part of the Strong Republic Nautical Highway (we covered up to Dumaguete City) and we decided to get some much-needed R&R at Cebu City. We left Dumaguete after lunch and drove our 1994 Ford Explorer 5.5 kms. north to Sibulan’s Looc Pier, where a Roll-on Roll-off ferry would take us and the car over to Brgy. Mainit in Cebu. We left 1:30 pm and arrived at our destination by 2:15 pm.
From thereon, we would have to drive the remaining 117 kms. up to Cebu City. This we did at a leisurely pace, making stopovers to admire the Church of Nuestra Señora Patrocinio de Maria in Boljo-on, now a national cultural treasure. Another stopover, for merienda, was made at Jollibee in Carcar, 40.3 kms. (a 1-hr. drive) from Cebu City. It just rained, but this didn’t stop me from exploring Cebu’s version of a “heritage town” in detail. Just outside, a wonderful round kiosk from the American era greeted me, valiantly standing proud, amid large offending billboards, at the center of the Carcar Rotunda. It is one of the best surviving examples of its genre in the country.
This 96.1-sq. km. junction town is also a crossroad leading to Sibonga to the south, Barili to the west, and San Fernando to the north. Two southbound roads leave Carcar—one to Moalboal, Badian, Matotinao and towns further south, while the other connects to Dalaguete, Oslob and towns located on Cebu’s south tip. Its 89,199 (2000 figure, spread out in 15 barangays) Carcaranons engage in blacksmithing and the making of footwear and native delicacies such as ampao (sweetened and crispy rice crunchies), bucarillo (colored coconut candy) and chicharon (pork skin cracklings). Tacoy (sweet pomelos) are also grown here.
POSTCARD-PRETTY
A CAKE-LIKE kiosk standing proud amid offending billboards
The town’s affluence during the Spanish colonial era is still evident in its sprawling plaza and its surviving large and small intricately decorated antique manors. Carcar is noted for its striking examples of preserved colonial architecture, both from the Spanish and American eras. The most notable structure is the Church of St. Catherine of Alexandria. Muslims sacked and burned the town’s first convent and church around 1622. The present masonry church, probably the second or third church, was built on a hill for greater security. It was started by Fr. Antonio Manglano in 1860, continued by Fr. Gabriel Gonzalez in 1865 and completed (including the interior painting) by Fr. Manuel Fernandez Rubio in 1875. Its roof was blown away during the November 25, 1876, typhoon.
Its lovely and massive Graeco-Tuscan façade, with its strong Muslim influence, has a double recessed arched main entrance (similar to an iwan of a Middle Eastern mosque), a blind wheel rose window below the upper recessed arch (above it is a carved Augustinian symbol), spandrels with geometric flora and a Baroque pediment on a high entablature, which crowns the middle segment. The lower story is flanked by a one-story structure corresponding to the aisles flanking the 68-m. long, 22-m. wide and 12-m. high-main nave. Neo-Classical altars, a coffered ceiling and carved cherub heads located along the arcade separating the nave from the aisle embellish the Church’s interior. The church patio, surrounded by a low fence of coral stone and wrought iron, has statues of the 12 Apostles, all painted white, except for that of Judas (standing all alone on a pedestal in front of the convent), which is painted black.
The twin Muslim-like bell towers have solid geometric pylons which act as buttresses, and have no openings except at the third story where ogee arches are used for the bells. This level ends up in onion-shaped domes reminiscent of minarets. One of its bells bears the date 1810, suggesting that a church was already in place by the early 19th century. Fr. Manuel Fernandez Rubio also built the masonry and wood convent, established on May 23, 1559, under the advocacy of the Visitation of the Virgin. An independent structure separated from the church by a road, it measures 33 m. in front and 22 m. at the side. The convent sank during the November 25, 1876, typhoon.
On the same hill as the church are the American-era Carcar Dispensary and St. Catherine’s Academy (founded in 1923). The façades of both are decorated with carved wooden gingerbread fretwork, cut out in the manner of Victorian houses and all looking as delicate as fragile heirloom lace that could flutter even with a slight breeze. At the foot of the hill is a small but imposing plaza decorated with statues.
Within the town are 46 quaint and antique ancestral houses called balay na bato (stone houses), some decorated with intricate lacy (calado) woodwork from the 1920s. This calado architecture, prevalent in Carcar, is unsurpassed in the country. A number of old houses, some older than the Church, are found at the foot of the hill. The Balay na Tisa (Don Ramon Sarmiento Manor), along Sta. Catalina St., alongside the Church, was built on February 2, 1859. Better known as Dakung Balay (the big house), it was so named after the material used for its construction (limestone blocks or tisa). This house is the first stone structure in Carcar and one of the town’s best and painstakingly restored ancestral houses.
Its original furniture (wooden poster beds, cabinets, tables and chairs), used by four generations of the Sarmiento clan, is still intact and functional. Also within are priceless antiques, including silver and ceramic dinnerware. The Sanchez house is younger by 17 years than the Balay na Tisa. The Silva house, designed by Benito Silva and Rev. Fr. Anastacio del Corro in 1883, was built with materials gathered from an old house in Naga and from the old del Corro house in Carcar.

Suggestions: Cang's mall (they already installed their logo), as well as the under construction 10-storey hotel besides Union Bank, Qualfon (the view of the building at the Central bank side is quite different where it is wider, as well as is if you take it including the DCDB glass claddings as background), etc.

jundem_dq63 September 14th, 2010, 12:57 AM University consortium strengthened
By Alex Pal
A simple activity of assembling a set of dolphin bones has cemented the atmosphere for cooperation and sharing among Dumaguete’s universities.
The bone-assembling activity last Friday, which was held at the Silliman University Institute of Environment and Marine Sciences (IEMS) at the Silliman Beach, was led by renowned mammalogist Louella Dolar, an adjunct professor at Silliman University, and marine mammal specialist Edna Sabater.
Dolar shared her expertise with four biology students from Foundation University led by their teacher, Cynthia Dolino, who was formerly Dolar’s biology student at Silliman. The bones, that of a female Fraser’s dolphin (Lagenodelphis hosei), were recovered from a dolphin which had died of malnutrition and was found near the IEMS building on March 1, 2009.
SU President Dr. Ben Malayang III had earlier approved a request from Foundation University to exhume the bones and assemble them, as part of a learning activity of students and faculty of the two institutions.
The bones will be placed on display at the Foundation University library, where Dr. Malayang said, “it would it will be hung on display from the library’s ceiling and shared for display for educational enhancement, enlarge the view of the students to these educational materials and promote our natural resources.”
This activity was made possible because of a consortium entered into by the four Negros Oriental universities four years ago, where they agreed to share resources “in order to give the highest level of education to the youth and their environs.” The consortium was signed by Malayang, FU Chairperson Victor Vicente Sinco, Negros Oriental State University President Dr. Henry Sojor and St. Paul University of Dumaguete President Sr. Nilda Masirag.
The universities agreed to promote common programs in the field of sports, culture, and academics.
“There was also a time when we made available certain books to the FU library when they needed it and we were also lent the expertise of a faculty member of the Negros Oriental State University at one point,” Malayang said, citing instances when the consortium was put to work.
Malayang said he believes he speaks for all universities by saying that the consortium has actually helped all universities and their students.
Dolar said the activity signified the beginning of the accomplishment of that goal of sharing of resources, knowledge, faculty, time, and specimens between the two schools.
Dolar finished her biology degree from Silliman University. She took her masters in zoology at James Cook University in Australia and her Ph.D. in Marine Biology at the Scripps Institute of Oceanography at the University of California. (with a report from Irene Frances Cabrera)

jundem_dq63 September 14th, 2010, 01:00 AM "Imaginals group" formed in Dumaguete
http://dumaguetemetropost.com/clients/dumaguetemetropost/9-13-2010-6-29-26-AM-3472192.jpeg
Fulfilling a campaign promise to contribute to Negros Oriental's development efforts, presidential candidate and environmentalist Nicanor Perlas has returned to Dumaguete to organize a group that would be a tool for the development of Dumaguete City and Negros Oriental.
The group is called Mission, which is an acronym for Movement of Imaginals for a Sustainable Society thru Implementation, Organization and Networking. While most of the group's members were backers of Perlas in the 2010 presidential campaign, today's Mission has expanded its membership base to non-campaign supporters.
"Mission includes all those who have a passion to create a better country and it has an open and inclusive nature," Perlas said during the organizational meeting last Sept. 4-5 at the MAT building of St. Paul University in Dumaguete.
The more than 40 participants in the organizational meeting were teachers, students, environmentalists, government employees, businessmen, engineers and members of the religious sector.
The workshop was organized by Esther Windler, Arlene Ramas-Uypitching and Leo Mamicpic, Gilbert Uymatiao, Sr. Joseline Lasala and St. Paul University Dumaguete. Mr. Perlas was accompanied here by a social entrepreneur of Mission, Ms. Grace Calleja from Baguio City.
The Dumaguete Mission workshop, which was similar to what Perlas had conducted in Manila, Cebu, Iloilo and Davao, drew on the thoughts, aspirations, experiences and insights of the participants, which provided the impetus to reinforce the Philippine Agenda 21 model for integral sustainable development.
The PA 21 is the country's blueprint for a sustainable development, which Perlas helped to craft.
To realize this blueprint, Perlas emphasized on the need to relive the positive values and emphasize on key Christian values such as love, peace and respect of the diversity of cultural and religious beliefs. (Gilbert Paul Uymatiao)

jundem_dq63 September 14th, 2010, 01:02 AM Ryan Cayabyab Singers to perform in Dumaguete
By Ma. Cecilia Genove
http://dumaguetemetropost.com/clients/dumaguetemetropost/9-13-2010-12-11-45-PM-6626031.jpeg
Master performer Ryan Cayabyab, popularly known in the entertainment sector as Mr. C, breezed into Dumaguete last week to conduct auditions for a national songwriting workshop in Manila soon. The one-day event was held at the College of Performing Arts, Silliman University and attracted a number of aspiring songwriters who were further shortlisted. The auditions likewise served as a precursor to a forthcoming concert of the Ryan Cayabyab Singers at 8 p.m. on Saturday, September 18 at the Claire Isabel McGill Luce Auditorium, Silliman University.
The Ryan Cayabyab Singers (RCS) is the brainchild of the world-renowned Filipino composer and musician Ryan Cayabyab. In the past, he was also responsible for other successful vocal groups including Smokey Mountain, 14-K, and the San Miguel Master Chorale (SMMC). Smokey Mountain produced the likes of Geneva Cruz, Chedi Vergara and Jeffrey Hidalgo, while 14-K catapulted Jolina Magdangal into stardom. Likewise, the SMMC was considered one of the premiere choral groups during its time.
The RCS was realized with a series of auditions that sieved 170 aspirants within the 18-25 age range. Only 37 qualified for the callback auditions and that number was further trimmed down to 17 hopefuls who were required to sing, dance, improvise, and show how well they could fare as overall performers. After having gone through several changes in personnel since their inception, Mr. Cayabyab’s current dream team includes Anezka Alvarez, Kaich Tiuseco, Celine Fabie, Poppert Bernadas, Erwin Lacsa, Anton Anternorcruz and Miguel Mendoza. Each of their voices is unique, bringing something different to the group.
Kaich adds soul to the group with her jazzy and bluesy style that instantly gives a warmer vibe, while the youngest member Anton brings a fresh, new sound. To complement this, Poppert and Miguel make use of their distinct pop sounds with the former effortlessly reaching top notes and the latter bulding the group’s strong foundation with his deep tones. Celine adds sparkling tones that reflect her rigid training in theater while Erwin and Anezka have a certain vocal brilliance brought about by their experience in singing with a choir. Together, these seven power soloists are a force to be reckoned with when they sing as an ensemble. The group’s edge lies in the members’ distinctive, individual talents and personalities, coupled with the youthful enthusiasm that endears them to their numerous fans.
This talented group had signed with Sony BMG Music Entertainment last September of 2007 and released their self titled album a couple of months after. The track list includes the new compositions Hiling, Ayoko Na, Ito Na Nga ang Pagibig, Ba’t Di Mo Sinabi, Paano Na ‘To, I’ll Make You Smile Again, as well as revivals of Mr. Cayabyab’s old compositions such as Hibang sa Awit, Call Me, Call Me, Hideaway and Hello Joe, Goodbye. While their carrier single Let Me Love You Tonight won “Best R&B Song”, they also gained recognition with the disctinction “Best Performance by a New Group” in the 21st AWIT Awards, an award-giving body specifically for the recording industry.
Since their formal launching in December of 2007, the RCS has awed audiences all over the country and abroad. At their concert debut in Davao in 2007, they received six standing ovations for their excellent performance. They also took part in the Filipinas Heritage Library’s Bravo Filipino Concert Series which brought them to perform around the metro and in Cebu, showcasing the world-class talents of Filipinos through the country’s own music. In June 2008, the RCS embarked on their 1st international concert tour in Singapore. They graced the Philippine Independence Day celebrations of the Philippine Embassy with their heart warming repertoire of Filipino music. In October of 2008, they carried out a 12-city tour of the US to raise funds for the benefit of Gawad Kalinga. Last year, they entertained and inspired Melbourne and Sydney during their short stint there in October. Most recently, they did an all-choreographed production of Motown and Beyond in Bacolod where their performance got the crowd on their feet; and a few weeks later returned to Singapore for another set of shows. Their concerts are always a tremendous success, making the Filipinos abroad proud of their native land’s own music and outstanding talents.
In the local scene, the RCS has done a string of shows in malls and commercial establishments such as Eastwood City, Shangri-La Plaza and The Podium, to name a few. They also provide entertainment at corporate events, and have dipped into helping several charitable institutions, with a particular keenness for Gawad Kalinga, by performing for fundraisers. They were involved in another worthy cause for the Organisasyon ng Pilipinong Mangaawit (OPM) and their project titled, “Kaya Natin ‘To!”; which, aside from having recorded a single, was culminated in an explosive concert at the MOA open grounds with the country’s biggest artists in December of 2009. Earlier this year, they proudly represented the country as ambassadors to an international project called, “Fair Play: Anti-Corruption Youth Voices” of Jeunesses Musicales International based in Brussels, Belgium.
The group has also appeared in various television shows and have been invited as guests on different morning and late night shows. At the moment, the group is in the process of training new members for future projects which include their second recording album.
With their inimitable and outstanding artistry combined with their deep love for music, the Ryan Cayabyab Singers will no doubt continue to make waves in the music industry, and will certainly keep on proving to the world that the Filipino talent is indeed a treasure to be proud of.
For ticket reservation you may contact the Luce Auditorium Office at (035) 422-6002 loc 520 and the College of Performing Arts loc 250.
