Sunset in Bayawan City

Sunset Lover
by Ashley Dickerson

Your love is like a sunset,
wild, bright and true.
The colours blend together,
forming a magical hue.
The day's warm caress
is slipping through the air,
just as though your fingers
would be slipping through my hair.

I sit and watch the sunset,
knowing it soon will end,
thinking of you and
waiting 'til we will be together again.
Slowly now it's going,
coming to a end.
Darkness may be closing in,
but the fun has just begun.

For now I can go home,
go to my darkened room,
lie on the bed and
close my eyes,
fall asleep and dream of you.

Bayawan City is located at the western side of the Negros island, lining up with Negros Occidental. Bayawan City also boasts of its newly completed two-kilometer four-lane coastal road known as the “boulevard” and is fast becoming the center of a bustling night life. Dubbed as the "longest boulevard in the Philippines". This boulevard serves as a front row seat to a panoramic view of a magnificent sunset. When this red orb is slowly falling down from the sky, different shades of hues scattered in the heaven, crimson, orange, burgundy, sienna, yellow, then it is embraced by the sea, and finally swallowed by the horizon. Darkness engulfed the sky. Another day has ended....

BUGLASAN FESTIVAL 2010 REELS OFF OCTOBER 15TH
By: Rachelle Nessia

(Dumaguete City, October 13, 2010) --- It’s going to be a non-stop celebration all week long when the most anticipated festival of all festivals in Negros Oriental kicks off on October 15 (Friday).

The Buglasan Festival will stretch from October 15 to 24 that will see crowds of Negrenses from all corners of the province as well as foreign and local tourists descend upon the capital city of Dumaguete for a week-long fête of food fests, street dancing, contests and concerts.

The opening day on October 15 is packed with activities starting with the 6th Buglasan Farm Family Congress at the Provincial Agriculture Office, followed by a Grand City-Wide Civic Military Parade at 2:00 p.m. that will weave through the city’s main streets.

At 4:00 p.m., the public can appreciate the unique Negros Oriental charm through the photo entries from local photographers at the My Negros Oriental Photo Exhibit staged at the Sidlakan Negros Village Art Gallery.

The exhibit will be spearheaded by the Sidlakan Negros Association of Photographers (SNAP).

An ecumenical service will be held at the Sidlakan Negros Village Auditorium at 5:00 p.m., followed by the Grand opening of local government unit booths dubbed “Pista sa Nayon” during which the participating booths will vie for the Best Booth and Best Booth Activity awards.

The LGU winners of the two awards will each receive P50,000.

According to Woodrow Maquiling Jr., Provincial Tourism Operations Officer I, judging for said event will be done in three cycles throughout the 10-day celebration, with the judges coming from Bacolod City, Cebu, Bohol and Siquijor.

Maquiling added that shoppers will also get to enjoy the Buglasan Midnight Sale and Mall Show at Robinson’s Place starting from 8:00 p.m. on the same day featuring Pinoy Big Brother Teen Edition Season 2 Big Winner AJ Falcon.

To mark the Buglasan Festival as well as Consumer Welfare Month this October, a Bonanza sa Robinson’s will also be held as well as a Toys R Us Warehouse Sale.

Robinson’s will likewise extend a Bonus Sale on October 16 to 17.

The day will wind up with an SMB Night featuring a live band concert at the Sidlakan Negros Village Auditorium starting at 11:00 p.m. (PIA/rmn)

UniGames in city all set
BY MARICAR ARANAS

All preparations are set for the 15th University games dubbed “Paugnat sa Negros Oriental 2010” October 24 to 30 hosted by Silliman University in Dumaguete City and the province of Negros Oriental.

At least 45 universities and colleges are expected to join and confirm their participation until the deadline tomorrow.

Philippine Sports Commission president Richie Garcia and Commissioner Chito Loyzaga will give messages during the opening ceremony on October 24 at the Julio Sy Grandstand/ Filomena Cimafranca Ballfield.

Jojo Antonio, co-convenor of the UniGames Committee, said yesterday 39 universities and colleges have confirmed their participation in the games.

A total of 2,278 delegates have already been assigned to accommodation venues. These include the 119 officials, 286 coaches and 1,873 athletes from different universities and colleges.

Antonio said the latest number of delegates is based on their record of schools that have confirmed to participate in the events as of yesterday.

Some of the delegations are coming early next week in order to prepare their athletes on the playing venues, organizers said.

Co-convenor Earl Jude Cleope said some schools have sent information declining to join the University games because of the limited transportation schedule. All flight schedule were already fully-booked since last week because of the Buglasan Festival celebration.

Cleope said their partner schools like Foundation University, Asian College of Science and Technology, Saint Paul University-Dumaguete and Negros Oriental State University have pledged to accommodate the athletes.

Some athletes who prefer to stay at hotels will be on their own because these are not part of the accommodation venues provided by the University Games Corporation, he said.

Officials and coaches will stay at the Negros Oriental Hotel and Aqua Center, Cleope said.

Antonio assured that security preparations are already in place especially on the billeting areas and in places where athletes need to be protected from thefts and other petty crimes.

Events in the Buglasan Festival include archery, athletics, badminton, basketball, chess, football, lawn tennis, sepak takraw, softball, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, volleyball and beach volleyball.*MA

Solili Festival (Siquijor, Siquijor)

Is the highlight of the Araw ng Siquijor celebration. One of the traditions valued to this day by the people of Lazi, Siquijor is the SOLILI BINALAYE, where the groom's kin size-up and get to know the bride. The celebration is to reminisce the courtship period between Tukmo and Punay, and as a tribute to the newlyweds, merrymakers dance the Solili, capping the festivity with shouts of "Solili Binalaye".

Telecom helps green Dumaguete

Smart is supporting the reforestation efforts of local government units by joining the tree-planting activity in Barangays Bagacay and Taclobo that are located along the Banica River, today.

Dumaguete City Mayor Manuel Sagarbarria and Vice Mayor Alan Gel Cordova will lead the activity.

The local government unit is reforesting the riverbanks after previous floods caused by the overflowing of the Banica River resulted in the destruction of homes and crops.

About 150 persons from SMART, City Hall, Foundation University, Barangays Bacagay and Taclobo, and members of local media are expected to participate in the activity.

Through its tree planting program, Smart has also conducted tree-planting activities at the National Irrigation Administration dam in Dauin, Negros Oriental and at Lake Balinsasayao in Sibulan.

It has been working with community partners in increasing forest cover since 2004 under Kabalikat, its corporate social responsibility program and community service program.

In 2008, Smart, parent company Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co., the PLDT-Smart Foundation, and Japan’s NTT DOCOMO, Inc. embarked on a three-year tree planting agreement.

It is now targeting to plant some 1.5 million seedlings and mangrove propagules in different planting sites across the country.

In addition to Dumaguete, other planting sites in the Visayas are Bohol, Iloilo, Bacolod, Cebu and Guimaras.*JFP [visayandailystar (http://visayandailystar.com/2010/October/16/negor5.htm)]

Dengue cases in NegOr drop

The number of dengue fever cases in Negros Oriental has dropped recently but the provincial office of the Department of Health warns the public not to drop their guard yet as rains still continue in the province.

Pacholo Alcantara, surveillance officer of the provincial DOH, said that as of October 7, no more deaths due to dengue were reported. He also said the total number of cases in the province reached 1,443 against last year’s figures at 1,112 for the same period.

Dumaguete City remains with the most number of cases at 385, followed by Sibulan – 145, Bayawan City – 120, Bais City – 97, Bacong – 83, Tanjay City and Vallehermoso – 65 each, Canlaon City – 60, Bindoy – 53, and Guihulngan – 47 cases.

Alcantara said dengue incidence in Negros Oriental reached its peak during morbidity week No. 35, from August 29 to September 4, where 161 cases province-wide were reported.

The decline in the following weeks show MW No. 36 having 152 cases, MW No. 37 – 145 cases, MW No. 38 – 102 cases, and MW No. 39 (which is the current week) having so far 39 reported dengue cases.

The provincial DOH, however, is still collating data from hospitals in the province, Alcantara said.

He added that the trend at the regional level also shows a decline in the number of dengue cases in Central Visayas.

Meanwhile, Barangay Daro in Dumaguete is still a dengue outbreak area while the DOH-7 on Oct. 9 cleared Boloc-boloc in Sibulan town, he added.*JFP

NOPH now smoke-free

The local health board of the Metropolitan Inter-Local Health Zone passed a resolution recently prohibiting smoking inside and in the vicinity of the Negros Oriental Provincial Hospital.

The zone consists of mayors from different local government units that include the towns of Amlan, San Jose, Sibulan, Valencia, Bacong, Dauin and Dumaguete City.

The resolution was sponsored by Amlan Mayor Bentham dela Cruz. It seeks to strongly prohibit smoking at NOPH. This, after he observed that some of the watchers of patients and even employees of NOPH where found smoking.

A provincial ordinance prohibiting smoking to any public building or public conveyances.

Dela Cruz said prohibiting smoking in the hospital is not something new because hospitals should be a smoke-free facility under Republic Act 9211 or the Tobacco Regulation Act of 2003, and mandated by the Department of Health. Also under the law, smoking is strictly not allowed inside any medical, dental and optical clinics, health centers, nursing homes, dispensaries, and laboratories.

Dela Cruz is the first local chief executive in the province and Region 7 who has successfully implemented the anti-smoking ordinance in his town. He said the ordinance was implemented not by forceful action, but by education and information campaign.

Also approved by the local health board was the appointment of four enforcers to implement the smoke-free ordinance. Private individual caught smoking in the hospital will be brought to the PNP station, and government employees to the Civil Service Commission.

They also agreed to put up a cessation clinic to help individuals who want to stop smoking. Dela Cruz said they have successfully implemented the cessation clinic in Amlan, and there is no reason why it can not be done in the NOPH.

The new members of the local health board are Dela Cruz, Mayor Carmelo Remollo of San Jose, Marcela Bartoces of Sibulan, Mayor Manuel Sagarbarria of Dumaguete City, Mayor Ricky Gonzales of Valencia, Lenin Alviola of Bacong and Niel Credo of Dauin.*MA

Buglasan getting bigger
BY RENE GENOVE
Monday, October 18, 2010

As the 10-day Buglasan grand celebration opened Friday, this year’s festival is getting bigger, more colorful and more attractive as all 25 cities and municipalities participated in different events at the Sidlakang Negros Village, in Dumaguete City.

An opening program dubbed “The Best of Negros Oriental presents: BUGLASAN” at the center stage in Sidlakang Negros Village showcased a parade of the loveliest ladies as Buglasan King and Queen candidates showed wit and added color to the festivities. Other best performances from various groups in the province were also presented.

As part of the program, a guest presentor, the colorful Siquijor’s Solili Festival, performed its traditional marriage ritual.

The presentation is a tribute to the late Gov. Emilio Macias II as Siquijor was part of Negros Oriental province then, before it became independent on September 17, 1971 or separated by virtue of Republic Act No. 6396.

Festival director Glynda Descuatan said with this kind of celebration, Buglasan Festival will not only bring merrymaking to all local and foreign visitors, but also economic or livelihood share in the province.

BOOTHS OPEN

Meanwhile, the grand opening of 26 local government units’ festival booths of Negros Oriental, including one for Siquijor province, was attended by regional director Rowena Monticello of the Department of Tourism, in lieu of Tourism Secretary Alberto Lim, Friday.

The opening of the Buglasan booths kicked off 6 p.m. at the Sidlakang Negros Village with a huge barrio fiesta celebration dubbed as “Pista sa Nayon.”

Each local government units displays different sights of arts and culture, kinds of local foods, and an array of fruits and vegetables as they aspire to grab the P50,000 prize for the best booth. One booth will be awarded P50,000 for best booth activity.

The booth competition will be judged in three rounds throughout the 10-day celebration, which also includes physical attraction and presentation, marketing and promotion value, and level of service of the people manning the booth.

Judges coming from Bacolod City, and Cebu, Bohol, and Siquijor provinces, are experts of their own fields and will evaluate the more than 20 LGU booths.*RG

The JFC Family is getting Bigger!!!

Jollibee to acquire 70% of Mang Inasal
By Yahoo! Southeast Asia Editors – October 18th, 2010

http://yfittopostblogph.files.wordpress.com/2010/10/600ap_jollibeestore.jpg?w=600

October 18, 2010 – Jollibee Foods Corporation (JFC), the Philippines’ largest food service company, disclosed today that the terms of its unsolicited offer to acquire 70% of Mang Inasal Philippines, Inc. (MIPI), owner and operator of the Mang Inasal restaurant chain, have been unconditionally and irrevocably accepted by Injap Investments, Inc. (Injap), parent company of MIPI.

JFC’s unsolicited offer included the principal terms of the share purchase agreement, which will be signed within 30 days, subject to completion of JFC’s due diligence. On closing of the transaction, JFC will own 70% of MIPI, with 30% remaining with Injap. There is no material relationship between the sellers and JFC or its directors, officers and affiliates.

JFC’s Chief Finance Officer and Vice President Mr. Ysmael V. Baysa disclosed that the purchase price is estimated to amount to approximately 3 Billion Pesos, subject to the results of JFC’s legal, financial and tax due diligence. Part of the consideration in the amount of 200 Million Pesos had been paid by JFC as initial payment. Thereafter, 90% of the purchase price (less than the initial payment) will be paid on closing, with the remaining 10 % paid over 3 years from closing.

On an annual basis, JFC’s purchase of 70% of Mang Inasal is estimated to add 5% to its worldwide system wide sales, 5% to its revenues, and 7% to its net operating income. Mang Inasal will also increase JFC’s store network in the Philippines by 19% and on a worldwide basis by 16%.

JFC’s financial and tax due diligence will be conducted by Pricewaterhouse Coopers – Isla Lipana & Co. with focus on the consolidated audited financial statements of MIPI for the year 2009 and interim period January to June 2010, as audited by KPMG – Manabat Sanagustin & Co., CPAs. Its legal due diligence will be conducted by Romulo Mabanta Buenaventura Sayoc and De Los Angeles.

For purposes of valuation, JFC used several methods, including discounted cash flow method and market-based valuation methods such as EBITDA multiple and Price/Earnings multiple. JFC’s purchase price for Mang Inasal is comparable with the multiples used in its previous acquisitions. JFC has sufficient financial resources to pay for the acquisition in cash that was generated from its operations.
JFC will build shareholder value by growing the sales of Mang Inasal’s existing stores through the application of JFC’s knowledge of consumers and its available recipes and products, continued expansion of Mang Inasal’s store network, cost improvement on its raw materials, and greater operational efficiency by applying JFC’s technology and scale.

It is the intention of JFC to maintain MIPI’s current personnel, subject to their meeting the JFC Group’s organizational standards.

Mang Inasal serves primarily grilled chicken and Filipino food. As of October 18, 2010, the chain consists of a total of 303 stories, of which 24 are company-owned and 279 are franchised. It operates 2 commissaries. MIPI is in a positive net cash position. It has estimated annual total revenues of 2.6 Billion Pesos and system wide sales of 3.8 Billion Pesos.

The JFC Group of Companies operates the Philippines’ largest fast food network. As of September 30, 2010, it had a total of 1578 stores in the country: Jollibee brand with 703, Chow King with 404, Greenwich with 218, Red Ribbon with 215, Delifrance with 23 and Manong Pepe’s with 15. It was also operating 375 stores abroad: Yonghe King in the People’s Republic of China with 185 stores, Jollibee 64 (mainly in the United States with 26, Vietnam with 20, and Brunei with 11), Red Ribbon 38, all in the U.S., Chowking 37 (mostly in the U.S. with 19 and Dubai with 15) and Hong Zhuang Yuan 51 for a total of 1,953 stores worldwide.

Another First in the country......

1904 - On October 29. 1904. seven Sisters of the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres established its first foundation in the Philippines in Dumaguete, Negros Oriental. The Sisters, coming from their mission in Vietnam, responded to the invitation of the Most Reverend Frederick Rooker of the Diocese of Iloilo, to which Dumaguete then belonged. They were Mother Marthe de St Paul, Superior, Sr. Marie Louise du Sacre Couer. Sr. Ange Marie, Sr. Anne de la Croix, Sr. Charles de Genes. Sr. Catherine, and Sr. Josephine.

St. Paul Academy was then established, an elementary school located near the Cathedral, accepted boys and girls and prepared them for their First Communion. The Sisters were installed in the old convent of the Augustinian Recollects that Bishop Rooker had offered. The parish priest transferred his residence somewhere else.

January 9, 1905, the new school opened with 30 girls ( 15 of whom were aged 15 to 20), four of them boarders, and six boys. Children, women, and young men came to the school for religious instruction. Besides the regular academic courses, there were supplementary classes in music, drawing, painting, French, sewing, and embroidery. The medium of instruction was English. However, since the americans had been in the Philippines only for Five years, very few pupils were acquainted with the language. Hence, the Sisters were obliged to learn Visayan and Spanish to be able to communicate with their charges.

The High School Department opened in 1920. The first high school graduation took place in 1925.

A presiding judge of the Regional Trial Court in Negros Oriental and a medical doctor are this year’s Outstanding Oriental Negrense Awardees.

Judge Rafael Crescencio Tan Jr. was cited in the field of government service-public service, and Dr. William Torres in Science and Technology.

Tan was born, raised and educated in Negros Oriental, graduated with honors in his elementary and secondary education and earned his Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Laws and Master in Public Administration degrees from Silliman University, in Dumaguete City.

His career as a civilian public servant started with his appointment as Prosecution Attorney II of the City Prosecution Office in Dumaguete, then as Prosecutor I.

He joined the judiciary as presiding Judge of the Municipal Trial Court in Sibulan, Negros Oriental, assisting judge of the MTC Branch 1 in Dumaguete, then as acting presiding judge of Branch 2 of the same court until his appointment as presiding judge of the drugs court, RTC Branch 30 from July 2005 up to the present.

Tan rose to become the first Regional Court Administrator of the pilot Regional Court Administration Office that supervises all courts in Region 7, and resumed his post as the presiding judge of RTC Branch 30.

Among his awards and recognitions are the Justice Alex Reyes Award for Judicial Excellence as Outstanding MTC Judge for 2002, Outstanding Service Award presented by the Integrated Bar of the Philippines, Negros Oriental chapter, plaque of recognition presented by the Supreme Court and the Society for Judicial Excellence, and the Dr. Jose P. Rizal Award for Excellence for his outstanding contribution to the Tsinoy community and the Filipino society.

He was mainly responsible for shaping the Philippine ICT/Internet Industry. He is also involved in R & D & I in ICT infrastructure ad wide-scale applications.*JG

wild, bright and true.

Zubiri seeking P75B to connect Visayas

Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri yesterday said he is filing a “one-Visayas bill” for a P75 billion five-year infrastructure program to interconnect the major Visayan Islands through bridges.

The bill will ask the national government to put in P15 billion per year for five years to connect all the major island groups of the Visayas to promote tourism, economic development and cultural unity, Zubiri said.

“It is a tourism come-on of the highest proportion, people may even bypass Manila and go straight to Cebu to go all over the Visayas. We will have millions of people coming here,” he said.

“The economic benefits (for the Visayas) will be magnified ten fold,” said Zubiri, in an interview after his speech at the 72nd Charter Day Anniversary of Bacolod City.

At the Charter day rites, Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia and Iloilo Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog signed a twinning agreement between the two cities at the Bacolod Government Center.

Leonardia said the coming together of the two cities will enable them to become a potent power in terms of trade and industry and become a new growth center in the country.

Mabilog said that if Panay and Negros were connected by a bridge, they could become the next economic tiger.

Zubiri said the Korean Aid Agency has granted a $2 to P$3 million feasibility study for these bridges.

“They are starting with a Cebu-Bohol bridge and I brokered to them the idea of the Santander, Cebu to Negros Oriental bridge,” he said.

“And we should also connect Bacolod City and Iloilo City,” he added.

According to the Korean government, it will cost P1 billion per kilometer to build these bridges, Zubiri said.

The link between Negros and Iloilo will be no less than 5 kilometers, so it can be built, Zubiri said.

It will be 17 kilometers to connect Cebu and Bohol so it will cost about P17 billion, while connecting Negros Oriental to Cebu would be another P2 billion, he added.

“These bridges will draw tourists to the Visayas not only for the food and the sights, but also to see the bridge infrastructure because it will be a marvel on its own,” he said.

“Many people visit Korea to see the longest bridge in Asia,” he said.

Zubiri said the Ramos and Arroyo administrations had pushed for interconnection of the islands through a roll-on roll-off system of boats.

“These are antiquated means of transportation, as we all know that as an archipelago we are at the mercy of the wind and the waves, and typhoons,” he said.

Zubiri also said he would ask Gov. Alfredo Marañon for the preliminary study Negros Occidental has on the bridge that would connect Negros to Panay.

Alfredo Marañon for the preliminary study Negros Occidental has on the bridge that would connect Negros to Panay.

http://www.visayandailystar.com/2010/October/20/topstory4.htm

I think Sen Zubiri didn't get his facts right. The overall plan, is to connect the large Visayan islands together. There were two choices for Occidental to Panay, one being 20km, or one through Guimaras, which would be a total of 26kms, but would be cheaper, because the water is shallower at that point.

Looc, Sibulan, to Liloan Santander, is 5km (not 2), and would have to be suspension type, as the Tanon Strait is 1,500ft deep at the center.

The other bridges, are Cebu to Bohol via Mactan, Olango Is; and the last one, Ubay Bohol to Maasin Leyte.

Also the feasibility study alone for this project is expected to cost P158M. I also remember that the cost of building these bridges was not P1B per kilometer, but $1B (dollars not pesos).

I hope and pray Sen Zubiri can get the funding for this. The Cebu-Neg bridge would be good to start with, as its the shortest.

Stakeholders eye
tourism, agri dev’t
BY MARICAR ARANAS

Major stakeholders from private and public sector held a forum on transforming the Negros Oriental economy through agricultural modernization, communications access and tourism development.

The forum was conducted by 1st Buglas Foundation Tuesday with the provincial government, local government units, business sector and the Philippine Chamber for Agriculture and Foods Incorporated.

A memorandum of agreement was signed by stakeholders on the Agrinurture, Incorporated and farmers association in Negros Oriental and the lease agreement for the one hundred-hectare land for the demo farm.

Rep. George Arnaiz (Neg. Or., 2nd District) said there is need to further develop the agriculture sector considering that the province has a vast productive agricultural land.

He said in the past years, Negros Oriental has shown significant growth in the tourism industry and information technology. The IT industry has absorbed about five thousand employees and still growing.

Arnaiz said the province has good potential for tourism industry but there should be another way of repackaging the province to make it more enticing to investors.

Rep. Pryde Henry Teves (Neg. Or., 3rd District) said there is no way now to stop land reform because of the growing population.

He challenged the local chief executives to strictly implement the comprehensive land use plan to prevent the conversion of agriculture land into commercial or residential areas.

Teves said he noticed the rising number of high end subdivision areas that were supposed to be productive agricultural land.

Rep. Jocelyn Limkaichong (Neg. Or., 1st District) said only two LGU’s failed to submit their comprehensive land use plan based on the records of the Provincial Planning and Development Office.*MA

UNIGAMES opens tomorrow

Excitement over the opening of the 15th Philippine University Games in Dumaguete City on Sunday continues to build with the number of participating schools increasing to 56.

Registration at Silliman University, this year’s UNIGAMES host, started on October 20 with more than 2,300 delegates, including the top contending teams in Manila, confirming participation.

Holy Angel University in Pampanga, Brokenshire College in Davao and National University, De La Salle University and Far Eastern University in Manila were the first five schools to register.

Yesterday, the UNIGAMES hosted the 1st UNIGAMES Sports Science Seminar at the Multimedia Center of Silliman University.

The seminar featured Alfred Manguiat (Bodivance/HDI Presentation), Nino Sinco (Fluides Guidelines for Sports Performance), Luz Callanta (Basic Principles of Sports Nutrition) and Hercules Callanta (Training and Conditioning for Sports).

Commissioner Joaquin “Chito” Loyzaga of the Philippine Sports Commission was at the seminar and gave words of encouragement to the participants who were mostly coaches and officials from participating schools.

“This is a first in the UNIGAMES, and this will be part of it,” Loyzaga said, as he expressed support for the inclusion of similar seminars in the UNIGAMES and the integration of sports science into the academic curriculum.

The UNIGAMES, which is largely supported by the provincial government of Negros Oriental and the city government of Dumaguete, offers 14 sports events spread across the Silliman campus and sports facilities in partner universities and local government units. These are the Asian College of Science and Technology, Colegio de Santa Catalina de Alejandria, Foundation University, Negros Oriental State University, St. Paul University, Dumaguete City and the municipalities of Valencia and Zamboanguita.

Started in 1996, the UNIGAMES is the only national collegiate sports competition organized in the country. The University of St. La Salle in Bacolod City first hosted it.*

Bayawan City Reaps Honors in Buglasan Festival 2010
By PHOEBE JEN INDINO
October 23, 2010, 9:36pm

DUMAGUETE CITY, Negros Oriental — The Tawo-Tawo Festival of Bayawan City came out top winner of this year’s Buglasan Festival, a festival of festivals participated by the different towns and cities in Negros Oriental province.

A coastal city, Bayawan is located some 101 kilometers from Dumaguete, the Negros Oriental capital. It is the largest city in the province.

The Tawo-Tawo festival contingent bested 10 other contestants for this year’s competition taking home the grand prize of P100,000 in cash and a customize trophy; it also topped the best in costume and best in street dancing categories.

Likewise, Bayawan City won third in the float competition.

Other winners include Bindoy town’s Libod-Sayaw festival, which got the second spot, followed by Bais City’s Sipong festival.

Libod-Sayaw also won in the most artistic float and the best in choreography categories while the most indigenous float trophy was garnered by Manjuyod town for its Amamanhig festival.

This year’s Buglasan King and Queen were Earl Frimpong of Zamboangita and Donna Cortes of Bais City.

Judge Rafael Cresencio Tan, Jr. and Dr. William Torillo Torres are this year’s recipients for Outstanding Oriental Negrense Awards.

The fifth Outstanding Oriental Negrense Award for Excellence ceremony will take place at this city’s Sidlakang Negros Village during the culmination of the two-week Buglasan Festival celebration.

Tan, 59, was duly recognized for his exemplary performance as a public officer and trial court judge, resolving 96.31 percent of all pending criminal cases and 98.66 percent of civil cases while serving as Municipal Trial Court Judge in Sibulan, Negros Oriental from 1999 to 2005.

BY MARICAR ARAANS

Saturday, October 23, 2010

Guihulngan grabbed the championship at the Buglasan Cheerdance competition held yesterday at the Lamberto Macias Sports Complex, Capitol Area, Dumaguete City before spectators composed of students and parents of the participants from the cities and municipalities of Negros Oriental.

The Guihulngan team executed perfectly their movements and earned thunderous applause from the audience. The team got the cash award of P20,000.

Second placer Silliman University-College of Computer Studies got P15,000. The SU-CCS team also won the Best in Costume award, and received P5,000 and a certificate of participation.

Third placer Silliman University-College of Arts and Sciences received P10,000. All the winners also received trophies.

Buglasan Festival Chairman Dr. Nichol Elman said they made the competition open to all schools since majority of the cheerdance teams were school-based.

He said this year has the most number of participants for the Buglasan Cheerdance competition. Elman also expressed his appreciation to Negros Oriental State University president Dr. Henry Sojor for supporting the event.

Other participants were Tanjay City, Pamplona, NORSU-Bais Campus and Bacong.

The members of the board of judges were Candice Gonzales, a former cheer dance member of Silliman University, Annie Santorio a member of the Ballet Philippines from the National Cultural Center of the Philippines and Juver Pataytay, a cheerdance master in Cebu and Visayas region.

Buglasan Festival co-chair Glenda Descuatan said the cheer dance competition is one of the best avenues for young people to be part of the Buglasan Festival celebration. She said the dancers have greatly improved through the years.

She also emphasized that LGU’s should support the team and always make safety a priority.*MA

Testing my mini DSLR which has HD video and HD photo capabilities. As of now I have to familiarize myself with its many features. This camera is a cross between the point and shoot ease of an ordinary digital camera and the zooming capabilities and the advanced features of a DSLR, plus the ability to shoot HD videos which is absent in most DSLRs.

Hmmm, file sizes are quite big so it takes long to upload in Youtube and Imageshack...

I hope to take videos of the fireworks later tonight...

Thanks... Actually I was offered a Nikon D300 which is quite expensive at a greatly reduced price. It is really excellent for serious photography. But it has lower picture resolution and no video capability. It is quite good actually for advanced photographers, but for me who usually do only point and shoot, and just need some little sophistication sometimes, this kind of camera is enough for my needs. What I like about it is the video capability in HD...

Talk 'N Text powers Dumaguete City Infoboard
Updated October 25, 2010 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines - Residents of Duma-guete City may now send feedback, suggestions and queries to their local government with just a few clicks on their Talk ‘N Text mobile phones.

This is made possible by the Talk ‘N Text-powered Infoboard that will connect Dumaguete citizens with their mayor’s office anytime, anywhere.

Smart Communications Inc. has partnered with the city government of Dumaguete to launch the Dumaguete Infoboard - a two-way, Web-based information system that allows communities and organizations to send and receive real-time announcements via SMS broadcasts.

Affordable and easy to use, it is the preferred feedback mechanism for organizations and communities like LGUs, schools and service providers all over the Philippines.

“The Infoboard will provide members of the Dumaguete community with a quick and affordable communication tool to share their ideas and concerns. We are pleased to provide Dumaguete City with this tried-and-tested communication service,” said James Bernas, Smart Wireless Consumer Department head.

“We are proud to partner with Smart to unveil a fast and convenient feedback mechanism for Dumaguete residents. The Infoboard will be a significant tool in our drive to encourage and engage our constituents to take an active part in nation building,” said Mayor Manuel Sagarbarria.

The Dumaguete Infoboard aims to bring the mayor’s office closer to its constituents and to promote citizen awareness and participation in the development of the city.

Aside from news broadcasts, the Infoboard will also be used to send service bulletins, cascade tips and advisories, and conduct surveys that will complement the major milestones outlined by Sagarbarria.

Registration to the Dumaguete Infoboard is free and easy. Simply text MAYOR<space>NAME / AGE and send to 717-DGTE (717-3483) to register for the Dumaguete Infoboard service.

To reveive the latest Dumaguete City bulletins and announcements from the mayor’s office, registered users just have to subscribe to the Infoboard service by keying in MAYOR<space>ON and send to 717-DGTE (717-3483).

Subscribers also have the option to send their messages, issues and concerns directly to the city government by texting MAYOR<space>FEEDBACK<space>DETAILS OF FEEDBACK and send to 700-DGTE (700-3483).

The cost of the service is P1 per text message.

To date, Smart has powered up the Infoboard systems of over 200 LGUs, schools, organizations and service providers all over the country.

Smart is targeting to connect more communities to the Smart Infoboard by end of the year.

For more details about Smart’s Infoboard service, visit the nearest Smart experience center or log on to www.smart.com.ph.

What I like about it is the video capability in HD...

that's actually a good buy since you can have point-and-shoot convenience while at the same time be able to practice more advanced photography with the use of manual modes, and that's when you decide if you'll be upgrading the DSLR way. point-and-shoot cameras can now rival DSLR's with the introduction of intelligent CCD sensors and high-quality optical lens, case in point, the Panasonic Lumix LX3 and the Fujifilm F-Series which can humble entry-level Nikon and Canon DSLR's any time of the day

Yeah, I think it's a good buy and cheap for its features :)...By the way here's the box of the camera that fell off my pocket:

I do not regret it at all because I think I got this really good camera now...:) I still have the user CD, the charger, cords and some peripherals for this camera, most of which I can use with my new cam...

More photos soon...

Sorry to hear about your other camera. On the bright side, you now have a much better camera, with a Hi Def video to go with it. Me, I just leave the DSLRs to the pros. My brother and nephew both have one. It is quite big and heavy to be carrying it around. I am quite satisfied with my point-and-shoot Panasonic Lumix DMC ZS3.

A Mix of Everything

http://i1002.photobucket.com/albums/af150/aipaul143/6325968.jpg

BY : LITO CINCO

The University Games ( UniGames ) started in 1996 in Bacolod with a single event, volleyball, after all, founder Roger Banzuela used to be president of the Philippine Amateur Volleyball Association ( PAVA ), but eventually, grew and grew both in terms of events, schools, and participants.

This year's staging, backed by the Philippine Sports Commission and hosted by Silliman University and both the provincial government of Negros Oriental and the City of Dumaguete, attracted close to 3000 athletes coming from 47 schools from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao and competing in 13 regular events already plus the demo sport of archery.

And the way it has been turning out, the UniGames has become a mix of everything aside from being an athletic meet, a reunion of former national athletes and coaches, same for former teammates and a junket or perhaps a vacation would be a the better term, but do not tell that to the athletes who compete with the same dedication that they show in their regular leagues back home.

The fact is, for Metro Manila schools, no more Team B's the past years, the credibility and popularity of the league has grown and schools have been sending their NCAA and UAAP teams, providing a much-anticipated playing opportunity for provincial teams, as the story goes, there was one provinmcial school which beat the De La Salle team from Manila in a basketball match, and so what if it was La Salle's team B , the winning school had a giant streamer made proclaiming to the world the fact that it beat La Salle, for a year, the streamer stayed there, even replaced when a typhoon destroyed it.

It has also become a showcase pitting Metro manila against the rest of the Philippines and definitely, going by results, taking last year for instance, Metro Manila schools dominated , winning 20 of the 24 events, Visayas took 3 titles, including football, the big sport in this part of the world and La Salle

Dasmarinas went home with one in the 2009 edition held in Iloilo City.

The fact that this year's UniGames also happened at the heels of the annual Buglasan festival of the province added to the spectacle and experience available to the visiting athletes.

Ateneo coach Norman Black, who has been bringing his Blue Eagles regularly to the UniGames, says, "the event gives me the chance to provide playing
opportunity to my bench players to prepare them for future competitions, " even as he denied that he also goes there to scout and recruit for new players, Black is going for his 3rd straight UniGames championship. His Blue Eagles gave a basketball lesson to the Mindanao State University-Marawi players who were still happy after losing 42 - 92.

Other basketball personalities here in Dumaguete are national coaches Junel Baculi, who is here for National University , Leo Austria, coach for the Adamson Falcons, Bert Flores, for FEU, and even Eric Alatamirano who was watching his son now playing for Ateneo, former Shell PBA trainer Hercules Callanta who is here with the Lyceum Philippines University where he is a consultant and is looking forward to next year's NCAA already, Callanta was also here for the first UniGames Sports Science seminar held two days before the formal games' opening. Non-basketball personality always in the UniGames even on his own is Vip Isada, a former personality in the local racing world, but is here with UP-Diliman's volleyball teams..

Indeed, the UniGames has become a mix of everything and everyone.

CPU wins soccer ‘championship’

“We consider every game as a championship. This is enough to carry us on to the finals.”

This was the statement of Joseph Gensaya, assistant coach of the football team of Central Philippine University (CPU) as they blanked Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU).

Kicking its way to the next level, the Central Philippine University hit the goal thrice this morning’s first football game, leaving behind ADMU with a zero.

CPU dominated the ball possession since the beginning of the game.

“It was a difficult game because ADMU is a big team with a big fighting heart, and are well prepared,” Gensaya explained. But CPU was unfazed. They faced the challenge head-on, despite two injured athletes.

Being able to make it to the quarter-finals two years ago, the CPU football team’s goal is to break their own best finish and make a good showing for their school.

Gensaya, alongside another Korean, is the assistant coach to Dr. Pee, who served as an eye-opener for CPU to give sports equal emphasis as academics.

CPU’s present team composition is far different from the previous years’ team, with eight Koreans and seven Filipinos.

Tomorrow brings University of St. La Salle-Bacolod as CPU’s first opponent. (Media Center: Beverly Zeña Jane Linao)

USJR proves to be Cebu’s best against ADMU

Keeping their optimism up, University of San Jose Recoletos’ (USJR) Spiking Jaguars, last year’s second best team, topped Ateneo de Manila University’s (ADMU) Blue Spikers in a 3-0 match in today’s second game at St. Louis School-Don Bosco for volleyball men.

After three sets of heart-stopping saves and spikes, the ADMU never failed to wow the crowd but ended up lagging behind the USJR.

Coach Grace Antigua of USJR said, “teamwork, good communication in the court and good strategy” is the team’s best asset. She admitted though that because “our players were already confident” by the third set, which caused them to be lax, ADMU almost caught up with them.

USJR is the defending champion of the recently concluded Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc.

In volleyball games, University of Negros Occidental Recoletos won against St. Paul’s University-Dumaguete; Eulogio 'Amang' Rodriguez Institute of Science and Technologytops De La Salle-College of St. Benilde; University of Sto. Tomas defeats Colegio de San Agustin-Bacolod; and Far Eastern University bested St. Paul’s University-Dumaguete. (Media Center – Precious Heradura)

FU beats ADMU in volleyball

VALENCIA, NEGROS ORIENTAL – The Ateneo Blue Spikers finally met its match, falling 3-0 to Foundation University in the fourth men's volleyball game today at the Valencia gym, leaving spectators in awe after a tension-filled 3-straight-set-match.

The Ateneo Blue Spikers tried to catch up with the Greyhounds as the latter consistently returned powerful attacks right from the game's get-go. Perceived as one of the celebrity teams, the Blue Eagles failed to wow the crowd due to the unexpected performance of the roaring Greyhounds.

A known champ in Dumaguete City, the FU Greyhounds proved their strength, showing dominance over the opposing team by the time they got in the court. FU didn't only get the cheer of the crowd; they also got the attention of ADMU’s perceived rivals, UP-Diliman players, especially when their team captain, Arnel Amadeo, executed powerful spikes.

DUMAGUETE CITY, Philippines—A baby whale shark (Rhincodon typus) that was trapped inside a fishpen in a coastal barangay in Negros Oriental was allegedly shot dead by the fishpen owner and cut up by villagers, a local official said.

Job Tagle, municipal environment and natural resources officer of Amlan town, said they went to the beach of Barangay Bio-os after receiving the report at 9 a.m. and found that the endangered whale shark, locally known as "butanding," had already been butchered and divided among villagers there and of nearby Barangay (village) Polo in Tanjay City.

"When we got there, the residents had already cut up the shark. We were only able to retrieve the head for burial," Tagle said Tuesday.

Based on the size of the head of the butanding and eyewitness accounts, Tagle estimated the weight of the marine creature to be about a ton. "It was still a baby," he added.

Tagle quoted a police report as saying that the slain whale shark had more than 30 bullet wounds. The police believed that the slow-moving filter feeding shark was killed by the owner of the fishpen.

He said the Department of Environment and Natural Resources would file a case against the suspect.

Sightings of butandings have been reported in Tañon Strait, a protected seascape.

Tuesday’s incident is the second case of a butanding death in recent years. Four years ago, an adult male butanding was found dead on the shore of Barangay Piapi in Dumaguete City.

4 Visayas schools advance into quarterfinals

http://unigames2010.weebly.com/uploads/5/4/0/3/5403009/2285161.jpg

The slots for the semi-finals are clearly up for grabs among schools from only Luzon and Visayas, with Manila teams raking in most wins in the determining matches today.

Central Philippine University (CPU) in Iloilo, Foundation University (FU) in Dumaguete, University of San Jose Recoletos (USJR) of Cebu and University of St. La Salle (USLS) in Bacolod are the lone teams giving a face to the Visayas bloc tomorrow.

A more cut-throat fight is, however, expected between USJR and USLS, which belong to a similar bracket in the men’s division, as they compete over a common semi-finals slot. In the same division, FU goes up against University of the Philippines-Diliman (UP-D).

In the women’s division, the Visayas bloc finds hope in CPU and USLS, which will compete against De La Salle University (DLSU) and National University (NU), respectively.

Manila schools see wider representation in at least the next final series round with additional quarterfinalists Adamson University, Far Eastern University, Lyceum of the Philippines University, Rizal Technological University and University of Santo Tomas. (Media Center – Beverly Zeña Jane Linao)

Baby ‘butanding’ shot dead, butchered in Negros Oriental

DLS-CSB defends, surrenders title in 2 lawn tennis divisions

The lawn tennis championship matches this morning witnessed De La Salle-College of St. Benilde (DLS-CSB) strongly defending its title in one division and giving an easy win to its supposed opponent in another.

As the 15th University Games (UNIGAMES) hosted by Silliman University nears a close, DLS-CSB holds on to its title as it earned its first gold following its victory over Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) in the men’s division.

DLS-CSB coach John Rey Moreno, who has been with the team for two years, considers their win a privilege. Pressure was mounting as ADMU also put up a good fight. His team, however, kept focus, ensuring an in every after hitting the ball.

ADMU is this year’s first runner-up, followed by De La Salle University (DLSU), which slid by a rank from its standing last year.

Meanwhile, the turnout for DLS-CSB in the women’s division did not make a repeat of its last year’s triumph. The team failed to participate in this year’s UNIGAMES, clearly putting off their chances at defending their title as champs.

Moreno explained that “medical problems” caused DLS-CSB’s inability to join this year.

DLSU won against ADMU in a super tie break that quickly pegged the scores at 10-4.

Coach Pereme Jeremia Alina of DLSU said his team clinched this year’s title because of good preparation. “Our players did their best. The Ateneans played well, but we had the luckiest shots,” he added.

Similar to its standing in the men’s division, ADMU ranked second to DLUS, followed by the University of the Philippines-Diliman (Media Center – Dorothy Mae E. Acabo)

Archery’s regular inclusion in UNIGAMES sought

This year’s University Games (UNIGAMES) pioneers in its 15-year history the playing of a sport that has given sophistication to the use of the bow and arrow.

The suggestion of Silliman University, 15th UNIGAMES’ host, to include archery initially as a demo sport materialized with Visayas schools Silliman and La Salle University (Ozamiz) reinforcing the promise of the sport.

Silliman and other schools with archery in its sports program are, however, seeking for its inclusion as a regular sport on top of 14 others.

UNIGAMES Corporation president Roger Banzuela said groundwork for archery to become a mainstay in the UNIGAMES has started, in support of this year’s present initiative.

“We have asked the National Archery Association to campaign for participants, and they have responded to help us make it a regular sport in the next years to come. We remain optimistic for this to happen,” Banzuela said.

For archery to be recognized as a regular sport, Banzuela said it has to sustain the participation of at least four schools – something that he foresee can be achieved with consistent marketing and promotional events.

Banzuela said the country’s chances of making it big in the Olympics are with, with Filipino athletes’ top standing in international events. In fact, Silliman has produced already a number of internationally renowned archers, among them are Olympians Rowel Merto, Lisa Ygnalaga, Jennifer Chan and Mark Javier, who was the lone Filipino in the2008 Beijing Olympics.

The series of demo games in archery had Silliman taking the lead in all three categories (30meter, 50 meter and Olympic round) in both men and women’s divisions. (Media Center- Klein F. Emperado)
