Hello! I'm so happy I found this forum and a member now. It's so nice to see all the pictures you all have posted. Keep up the good work! I'm always looking forward what's new in Dumaguete. I just hope that there would be a mall that is open up to 10pm.

You're very welcome here...Maybe Robinsons will when it's finished. Actually, the City Government is hinting that there would be two large malls in the City in two years, and many people here assume that the second mall would be SM as there are persistent rumors that they already have acquired a lot one kilometer away from the soon-to-rise Robinsons mall.

With regards to late night activities in Dumaguete, lately several restaurants are open 24 hours such as Chowking and other fastfoods. Shakeys along the boulevard also opens until 10 pm or 11 pm. With regards to night hangouts, Dumaguete is a vibrant city at night because of the presence of many bars and night spots. The Rizal Boulevard itself is a 24-hour hotspot.

GREENPEACE, known the world over as the defender of the oceans, took time out from their Guimaras operations to make a 36-hour visit to APO ISLAND whose marine protected areas is known as among the world’s best. Danny Ocampo, Greenpeace campaigner said that the success of Apo is the management aspect in terms of getting full citizens cooperation in the preservation of the ecological balance underneath the sea.

Asked to give a rating on Apo, he said, Apo could easily get a grade of 95% considering the wanton destruction of marine ecology in other parts of the world. Apo marine resources management is a project of Silliman University together with other private advocates the world over.

Greenpeace ship, MY Esperanza, arrived in Dauin, Oriental Negros early morning on August 30 to campaign for the establishment of more marine reserves, and to draw attention to the grave impacts of land-based pollution of the country?s marine environment.

After dropping by in India to confront local communities and government on the brink extinction of turtles, they came to visit the country to expose ocean crisis, and to educate local communities about what destruction could do to the ocean and the marine animals dependent on it.

Greenpeace, an independent campaigning international organization, believes that the best solution to our environmental problems today that would ensure the future of our children is to push for conservation of marine reserves and to maintain sustainability of the marine protected areas.

Greenpeace Esperanza Captain Pete Boquet said that the government should at least set aside 30 percent of a town?s water for the establishment of a marine reserve that would actually benefit the people in the community. ?What Greenpeace is trying to emphasize is we publicize and promote our hope which is the Dauin and Apo's marine reserves, said Boquet.

Greenpeace Campaigner Danny Ocampo said defending our ocean's project aims to promote collaborating initiatives of the local communities in protecting and maintaining marine protected areas.

Greenpeace ship together with the 20 crew visited the world renowned Apo island on August 30 to appreciate the beauty of the islands well as the marine biodiversity in it. They were welcomed by the local community with a 20- meter banner by the shore, with the words' marine reserves: hope for the oceans. The visit is a part of the Philippine leg of the Esperanza's global defending our Oceans tour and follows two weeks of campaigning against marine pollution in different parts of the country.

According to Dauin Mayor Rodrigo Alanano, Dauin was once a dirty town but it is known today as the best coastal resource in the country. Because of the strengthened collaboration between the local government and Silliman University marine Laboratory, headed by Dr. Angel Alcala Dauin and Apo island has attained its success and has established nine marine reserves that are famous for marine biodiversity. All of these are a product of hard work, and a product of public service, said Alanano.

the marine reserves were established in 1970's, the locals in Apo practiced moroami, dynamite and other methods of fishing. "Everyday we noticed that the fishes in the island became less, so we could not really sell it to Dumaguete," said Boy. He added that today, the locals help in protecting the marine reserves night and day. "I also made sure that the marine reserves are a no-take area," said Boy.

Today, there are 350 marine protected areas in the country. 36 of these have been established in Negros Oriental. 2 million hectares of the coral reef has been protected. Dr. Angel Alcala is glad that people reacted to the environmental campaign conducted by Sumilon and Apo island marine reserves models. Dr. Alcala said that we have to continue our advocacy, and to continue our vigilance in rehabilitating our corals, and maintain commitment to the environment. He is also calling on the mayors of Bacong and Zamboangita to do the same thing Dauin did.

"We still have a long way to go, but we should be happy with what we have right now, and this is for the generations to come."

have you guys noticed a building under construction sa south road? just near the road going to valencia? ive been noticing that for weeks now coz its quite tall. about 6-8 storeys high.. i really don't know the exact floors since u wont be able to see the 1-3 storeys, so im just basing it sa height. it can be seen as far as city high school or if u stay in dgte business park. at the same time, u can see it from the public market. na intriga ko.. does anyone know about it?

Yeah, I keep noticing that thing! I have no idea what it is though, or how to get to it, since it doesn't seem to be along the main road. I was actually driving around that triangle of land a couple of times trying to figure out how to get in. :|

On a side note, I'll be starting a job in Cebu City sometime next week, so you probably won't be getting much Negros Oriental updates and pictures from me. Keep posting and keep me updated. :)

This is where Teletech's headquarters is located. It has it's own huge building located just meters away from South Road. Soon, Robinson's will be occupying in the same area. Because when there is Teletech, then most probably, Robinsons is also there. As what Ritche said, it will have 60,000 sq. meters in gross area, which will not be too big for the whole area since the whole Business Park and IT Plaza is huge enough to fit the whle business district of Dumaguete.
Sooner or later, the area will also have some more IT companies, hotels, shops, offices, and most probably, condos. Lets just wait and cross our fingers in the hope that these plans will really take place before 2010..:)

The Teletech building, though not exactly cool from the outside, is cool on the inside. It has a gym, sleeping area, shower area, internet, staff lounge, coffee shop and restaurant, reading room/library, etc. Everything that a callcenter agent needs is there. Indeed, comparable to the IT centers in Metro Manila.

Makes me wish I am one of the workers in this company (hehehe) :) .

It is probably the largest Teletech center outside Manila as it will have 800 seats or a total capacity of 1,200++ wokers. And another building (I heard 2-storey) will be constructed soon. Since Teletech builds its own complex here, and not rent, there is an assurance that they are here in the city to stay.

Indeed, a big vote of confidence from the world's 2nd largest callcenter company.

Just a question Nikko, why'd you omit Bacolod in the list. Is there an ill feeling towards Bacolod by Dumaguete people? I think there shouldn't be any such attitude because most of us from Bacolod are happy that Dumaguete is growing quickly.

DAILY FISH TRANSACTION in DGTE CITY PUBLIC MARKET: P3.5 M
BY DEMS DEMECILLO (Negros Chronicle)

Do you know that the DAILY volume of fish trading in the Dumaguete market reaches a whooping P3.5-million, P7000 of which goes to the city’s coffers in fees daily?

At only P100 per kilo of fish, (which is a low estimate) then the 35,000 kilos sold daily would mean a fish trading volume of P3.5-million every day.

So, do not under estimate the fish vendors, they are contributing immensely to the city's economy. It is because the meat consumption is divided into pork and beef and that people are now more healthconscious in that fish menu is preferred.

It is important therefore, that we must protect our marine resources so that fish supply will not dwindle and that fish habitats are protected so that they can produce even more.

Dumaguete's telco infrastructure qualifies it to ride on the growth of global outsourcing industry

By Dominique Cimafranca

One secret that will serve Dumaguete well in its ambitions is the telecommunications infrastructure in the city. Unknown to many, Dumaguete actually has a robust high-capacity network already in place. This network consists of microwave links and a fiber-optic backbone which connect the city not only to Manila and Cebu City, but to Mindanao and other islands, as well.

The fiber optic links going into Dumaguete are among the best for a city outside of Metro Manila. The total capacity of these fiber links is a whopping 320 Gbps* which translates to 4.5 million high quality data and voice lines – a capacity which can accommodate five million call center agents. Bandwidth-hungry outsourcing businesses such as call centers, transcription services, and digital post-production will find ample room for growth for their telecommunication needs.

Redundancy is another key feature of Dumaguete’s telco infrastructure. Dumaguete is a landing site for the fiber optic backbone networks of Globe Telecommunications, as well as Telecphil – the national consortium of telco providers. In addition, microwave communications supplement the links, assuring that service businesses need not fear outages caused by a downed cable.

Investment promotion is going full-speed ahead for Dumaguete with the coordinated efforts of local government, national agencies, and non-government organizations. Already boasting of topnotch graduates, the city is well positioned for growth in the booming international services outsourcing industry.

IT/ITES Firms

"In the past few years, several software development companies have emerged in the Philippines, as well as many other IT-related enterprises, like Medical Transcription Services and Call Centres, most of them however clustered in big cities like Manila and Cebu. Little did the world know that Dumaguete City, apart from its human resources, has access to the country’s most advanced telecom infrastructure right outside its doorstep, comprising a high speed fibre optic backbone network with a 320Gbps capacity!

This rarely promoted advantage this little city has over the rest of the country, combined with four well reputed universities and several other learning institutions, and added to that a considerably lower cost of operating businesses compared to the metro cities, makes Dumaguete City probably the most attractive place in the Philippines for ICT growth today. Hey, today I saw another tombstone-like thing just like this one in front of the Bell Tower. Anyone know if there are any more of these? :)

At a recent meeting of the mayors of Negros Oriental, Teletech appealed to the mayors to help them get more employees. Apparently they haven't been finding as many qualified agents as they were hoping for. Ehh... if they want more employees, they really need to offer more attractive compensation. Call center agents in Cebu companies earn almost twice as much as what Teletech is offering. Even considering the hassle of relocating and the higher cost of living over there, I think a lot of people would still choose to move to Cebu if given the choice between Teletech in Dumaguete or Convergys/PeopleSupport/eTelecare/whatever in Cebu.

ritche
September 14th, 2006, 03:16 PM
They are putting up a big center here because they know they can hire a lot, but they are paying their employees very cheap...Hope Teletech will 'repent'. And it would be better to allow a new callcenter company to come in so salaries would rise.

I think Teletech is being 'spoiled' by the first mover agreement. On the other hand, it is good to know that they are here for the long run...

averatec3200
September 15th, 2006, 01:23 AM
The First Mover Agreement with Teletech was not a good in the city. It states that salary of Teletech employee should not go below of 1.3 x minimum wage which apparently is around P270 per day or around P 7,000 per month.

I guess we still have to wait for 3 more years before we could see this figures go up.

If they would just keep their compensation package at par with cebu, then they would not have a hard time looking for employees.

Good Morning From the USA:

My family and I visited Dumaguete in early August of this year, and really enjoyed the people, city, climate, and culture. We liked it so much, we are now in the process of building a new home there past Dauin on the sea.

Our plans are to move over there in about three years, and my 16 year old daughter will attend Silliman. We may also move over, our large medical mfg. facility, and have the products built in Dumaguete, and then exported world wide.

I thoroughly enjoy the pictures posted as well as the comments and information, and look forward to our visit again in May of 07.

Robinsons' Dumaguete maneuver
THE SMALLER Robinsons has outflanked SM in Dumaguete City, and is building a mall alongside an 800-seat BPO/transcription center, ensuring a captive market just like the large Dell call center in the SM-owned Mall of Asia.

With the ferry trip across Tanon Strait taking only 40 minutes, the planned mall hopes to attract residents of southern Cebu to shop, eat and watch movies in the university town, rather than endure a two-and-a-half hour drive to the increasingly congested Cebu capital.

Groundwork for the new mall is already underway on a six-hectare property acquired from sugar trader Julio Sy.

And, as a goodwill gesture to the host city, Robinsons CEO Lance Gokongwei has agreed to be next year's commencement speaker of Silliman University, even though the mall would not open until 2008.

SPi Expands Global Delivery Capabilities With Two New Asia-Based Facilities

State-of-the-art Facilities in India and the Philippines Allow for Enhanced Delivery of Publishing Solutions. (http://www.spitech.com/web/spi/home.jsp)

Washington, DC, September 4, 2006 – SPi, a global provider of editorial, content production and BPO solutions for publishers, today announced the opening of two new, state-of-the-art delivery centers in India and the Philippines. As a result of SPi’s rapid growth and the increased demand for its services, SPi sees these purpose-built facilities as significant steps
in positioning itself to meet its customers’ needs.

The new India-based facility, located in Pondicherry, will serve as SPi’s primary delivery center for its end-to-end book operation. The three-story, 12,000 square foot facility will house over 600 content specialists. Using a robust technology platform, these talented professionals provide a wide array of editorial and content production services for publishers of books, serials and major reference works, as well as eBooks and multi-media content.
SPi’s capabilities in Pondicherry will continue to be supplemented by SPi resources in both Chennai and New Delhi.

Ernest Cu, President and Chief Executive Officer of SPi said “The growing volume of our book business has prompted us to make the strategic decision to expand and move into a new state-of-the-art facility and to consolidate our existing operations in Pondicherry. With this move, we will be able to optimize our business operation such that we can be more competitive and increase efficiencies for our clients.”

Cu went on to say, “At SPi, we strive to be the employer of choice in every country in which we operate, and we are committed to providing our employees with the best working environment possible. These new facilities enable us to make good on this promise to our employees.”

The new Philippine-based office, which is located in Dumaguete, allows SPi to effectively expand upon the content production and editorial services being provided by its Manila-based Journal operation. This 20,000 square foot purpose-built facility accommodates over 550 content specialists providing XML structuring, typesetting, and copyediting services to a growing list of journal publishers worldwide.

Both the Dumaguete and Pondicherry facilities include many state-of-the-art features like internet-enabled training and testing rooms, ergonomically designed work stations and spacious recreational areas.

Frank Stumpf, President and COO of SPi’s Publishing division said, “We continue to look for the most talented publishing professionals available in India and the Philippines, and our facilities allow us to attract the top talent in the market place. Dumaguete offers us access to talent from one of the top universities in the Philippines, as well as several other universities,
and we believe the quality of English language skill in the city is very high. By hiring the best in every country in which we operate, we can continue to provide our clients with high quality, cost-effective, end-to-end content outsourcing solutions.”

My friend, who works at Teletech, told me that they're scheduled to transfer to their new building next month. But she said that with a scoff and a roll of the eyes that says she doesn't think that'll happen. They currently seem to be concreting the road leading to the building.

Is the construction of the Portal West Building on hold? There doesn't seem to be anything going on there anymore, and I heard that it's delayed since they don't have a building permit.

They've finally torn down the ruins of the old Po's Marketing that surrounded the construction of the new Check Inn Pension Plaza. I'm relieved to know those ugly walls aren't just going to stay there.

Charmaine’s mom, Alma Lim-Hunt has Roots in La Libertad
http://www.negroschronicle.com/final/current/charmaine.jpg[/CENTER]

Half-American, Half-Filipina (La Libertad, Negros Oriental), 28-year old beauteous Charmaine Lim-Hunt, achieved as rare eighth finalist in the world-famed TV reality show of NBC called “The Apprentice”. She bested eighteen others in stiff elimination rounds on US national television. Those who failed to win were meted out boardroom justice with boss man Donald Trump ‘s trademarked phrase, “You’re fired!”
According to Donald Trump himself, the real-estate magnate and boss man at NBC’s reality show The Apprentice, in describing Charmaine, said :”she made presentations to companies that were just unbelievable. Better than people who have been doing it for 20 years. She’s a natural sales person, but beyond that an unbelievable presenter.”
Mr. Trump and the NBC Television Network are partners in the ownership and broadcast rights for the three largest beauty competitions in the world: the Miss Universe, Miss USA, and Miss Teen USA Pageants.
The last Miss Universe pageant substantially beat the NBA Playoff Game it opposed in ratings, and a new five-year television contract was just signed with NBC.
Charmaine Lim Hunt was born in Madisonville, Kentucky on January 11, 1978. Her mother emigrated to the U.S. from the Philippines upon receiving an offer to teach 2nd grade in Madisonville. Her father moved to Kentucky for a job, and the two met while moving into their apartment complex.
They later married, and her mother had Charmaine at the age of 38.
Her Mom, the former Alma Lim, is a Silliman University alumna in Dumaguete City, Philipppines. She hails from La Libertad, Negros Oriental. She met Bob during her stint in Kentucky as a teacher. Growing up in the south and under her mother Alma’s strict Asian rule has been a big influence in Charmaine’s life. She still has the southern charm, morals, and courtesy that she learned growing up, but also has her mother’s determination, ambition and drive to succeed. Alma, her mom, could yet be a model Filipina mother.
Charmaine attended Western Kentucky University, where she received her B.A. in Corporate and Organizational Communications and a minor in Marketing. While in college, she was extremely active on campus and held leadership positions in many organizations such as the Student Alumni Association, Kappa Delta Sorority, Panhellenic and the International Association of Business Communicators.
After graduation, Charmaine wanted to explore new and exciting opportunities, so she packed up her car and moved to San Diego, California. She had never even visited before, but was up for an adventure, so she fearlessly left her life as she knew it and headed west. While in San Diego, she began her career in marketing and advertising sales. She successfully brought in multi-million dollar clients, trained new employees, and structured long term pricing and contracts. Charmaine, the youngest on the sales team, consistently exceeded her sales goal by more than 200 percent, making her # 1 in sales for two consecutive years. After two years of hard work and some fun on the beach, she moved to Scottsdale, Arizona for her next challenge in new business development with a mortgage firm.
After being away from home for 3 1/ 2 years, Charmaine headed back to the south to be closer to her parents. She relocated to Nashville, TN where she earned her Real Estate license. She then began her career in the Home Warranty industry as an Area Manager for First American Home Buyers Protection, a Fortune 500 Company. Charmaine is solely responsible for introducing and promoting her product to over 5,000 Realtors in the Middle Tennessee area.
She is highly involved in the local Real Estate community through her local and state wide association involvement. She is the Fundraising Chair for the Women’s Council of Realtors and serves on the Membership Committee for the Greater Nash ville Association of Realtors.
In her free time, Charmaine is very adventurous, and loves spending time outdoors riding her bike, hiking, or running. She completed her first marathon in Honolulu, Hawaii in 2001, and has run several smaller races since then. She once trained a group of co-workers who had never run before to run a mini-marathon!
Charmaine also enjoys traveling and experiencing new things. She really enjoys food, and one of her favorite things to do is to experience new flavors from around the world and enjoy nice meals with friends and family. Her one true love is her Bulldog, Knox, who is the true King of the House!

DUMAGUETE
by: Jonas Gruet

It is difficult to abandon a peaceful and beautiful city rich in historical landmarks and friendly people as one’s heart is easily ‘snatched’ by Dumaguete’s unmatchable charm.

The name Dumaguete was derived from the Visayan word daguit which means ‘to snatch’ or ‘kidnap’. In history, Moro pirates recurrently looted the city and kidnapped its beautiful native maidens. Today, it is the capital city of Negros Oriental and its gateway, with its airport and pier on its southeast coast. It is a prosperous city of at least 100,000 ‘gentle people,’ known for their unassuming and hospitable ways. A typical Dumagueteño can communicate in Cebuano and Ilonggo, besides Pilipino and English.

Dumaguete is bordered on the east by the Mindanao Sea. A lovely view of this is captured along the 780 meter long Rizal Boulevard. A favorite hangout for picnics, recreation and watching, the boulevard used to be a stretch of beach, where Jose Rizal was said to have strolled and idled during a stopover on his way to Manila from Dapitan.

With over 150 buildings and an area of 65 hectares, the prestigious Silliman University is the biggest university outside Manila. Its library is known as Asia’s largest library complex. It is the first Protestant university in the Philippines, and is thus the oldest, private American protestant university in Asia, founded in 1901 by the protestant missionaries under the sponsorship of the Board of Foreign Missions of the Presbyterian Church of the United States. $10,000 was funded by Dr. Horace Brinsmade Silliman, a businessman and philanthropist from New York. The whole campus is declared a bird sanctuary and is an environment-friendly, non-smoking campus.

Silliman University is bordered on the west by Veterans road. This was where General Diego de la Viña led his revolutionary forces to enter Dumaguete, passing through the road on November 24, 1898. St. Paul’s University, another of Dumaguete’s sprawling campuses, was founded in 1904 by the Sisters of St. Paul de Chartes of France. It is Asia’s first St. Paul institution with Mother Dominic Maire as its first superior.

General Diego de la Viña’s bust is found in Quezon Park, so named as a tribute to commonwealth president Manuel L. Quezon. The rebellion of the locals against the Spanish rule took place in this area on November 1898, during which, bells in the nearby bell-tower were rung. At present, the bell-tower, Dumaguete’s landmark, still stands and is close to the renovated Dumaguete Cathedral Church.

Marked with well-manicured lawns, aged acacia trees, and an imposing fountain, is the Benigno Aquino Freedom Park, built by the Philippine Tourism Authority. It gives a pleasant foreground to the Capitol.

Fruits, vegetables and flowers are plentiful all year round. Mangoes here are called tu-od. Other Dumaguete delicacies include the budbud kabog, lumpiang ubud, chicharon, danguet hayob (dried fish), bocayo, banana chips, dried fruits, peanut brittle, and sugar-coated peanuts.

The Sandurot festival is the city’s largest festival held every November. It is Dumaguete’s traditional festival, celebrating the foreign influences that have come to affect its people and culture. Two such foreigners are Mr. Mike Butler, an Australian, and his Austrian wife. They had left their previous work in an Australian furnishing company, and have graciously opened their doors to us in their restaurant, Coco Amigos; hotel, the Coco Grande and resort in Apo Island.

Coco Amigos restaurant is a fun place quirkily furnished with zany pieces. It mimics the Mexican fiesta, ornamented with authentic and colorful sombreros, theatre masks, comical figurines, even traditional Mexican wall fountains. Both Mexican and non-Mexican food are served for more variety. At night, live music adds to the festive ambiance and ferries studded with lights drift by along Dumaguete Bay as the restaurant is located in front of Rizal Boulevard. Also Mexican-inspired is the Coco Grande Hotel. It has 25 cozy rooms furnished with TVs, a coffee shop that serves tempting cakes, a charming restaurant, and an elegant piano bar & lounge. The hotel opened about a year ago and is currently developing its KTV lounge, convention rooms, beauty & massage clinic, and health & fitness gym. Located south of Dumaguete City is Apo Island Beach Resort on a 74-hectare volcanic molehill in the middle of Mindanao Sea, that reveals breathtaking underwater gardens budding with exotic marine flora and fauna for tourists and scuba-diving enthusiasts alike.

We are very dedicated to the improvement of Dumaguete as well as the quality of life for it's people. Not only when we move over, but whatever we can do now.

While on our trip over in August, we met some wonderful people, and have stayed in touch with them.

Our builder and his family are great people, and will do an excellent job for us. He is also looking for a mfg. facility or machine shop for our medical business as well.

We will make another trip over in May, and hope to stay much longer.

All the best to each of you.

I went to St. Paul last Sunday to visit my aunt, who is a Sister at St. Paul, and I've noticed that there was a construction going on. The elementary school is being expanded at the back of its current building. Quite a big expansion actually as it almost equalled the whole length of its current bulding.

Ritch, I highly recommend to take some shots also of the back of the elementary building. There's a beautiful landscape there and infront of it is a building made entirely of bamboo. I don't know what's the name of that building but it is a very relaxing place. Check out the design. You can also take some shots of the bridge connecting the two grounds of the school of what used to be a river, the pink women's dormitory at Le Vis Ville (sp?), the stain glass of the chapel, the landscape infront of the Fr. Luis Chauvet Hall (gym), and the beautifully manicured lawn especially when the lights are turned on during nighttime.

I am also a St. Paul alumnus as I spent my high school days there. I was able to visit St. Paul University-Surigao City and saw some pictures of other St. Paul schools like the ones in Pasig and Makati. Some of them have bigger buildings but on my opinion and what others have attested also that none of them can surpass the beauty of the mother school's campus in Dumaguete.

Sun Star Dumaguete, September 21, 2006

DUMAGUETE City is set to build a passenger terminal worth P80 million at its port in Barangay Looc.

Mayor Agustin Perdices said construction of the project could begin on the first quarter of next year if everything is finalized this year.

Perdices said the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) estimated an P80 million budget to build for the port facility.

He said he expects the bidding for the project in the remaining months of the year and if the process were completed, the building of the long-awaited passenger terminal would begin in the first quarter of 2007.

Perdices said the Dumaguete project is patterned after the terminal in Bataan but the city would use the design made by architects Bobby Duray and Dean Sinco of Foundation University.

Both architects have already authorized PPA to use their design.

The passenger terminal would be built in front of the Philippine Coast Guard building at the pier.

It would be equipped with enough facilities to handle passenger volume, fully-air-conditioned, and a better aesthetic compared to other passenger terminals in other cities.

The Teletech building is getting beautiful today as can be seen in this picture. The area at the left side is the future Robinsons mall.

The 6-hectare area of Robinsons is still being leveled and hardened to prevent the occurence of the experiences of other buildings, especially malls, wherein the floorings cracked due to weak foundation. This very tedious process being undertaken by Robinsons to ensure the quality and long-term viability of their mall here in Dumaguete might delay the latter's actual construction.

Anyway, as of this time it seems the Gokongweis are having big plans for the city. The older Gokongwei might even decide to settle here.

There are still a lot of things that will rise in this area in the coming months. Think of Cebu Business Park and Eastwood City, plus a marina and other amenities, and you get the Dumaguete Business Park. And coming only from the best in urban planning and development.

i really do think hardening the base of robinsons is very important since dgte business park used to be swamp and more to that, it is just near the sea. the land could just erode and sink once a huge and a very heavy structure will be erected. even the 3-level annex of the main HS building of Saint Louis School - Don Bosco, which is just meters beside the business park sank a bit after an earthquake back in the 90s. the reason was that the land was just a bit soft. but im very conficent Palafox is well prepared.

UNIVERSITY TOWN

Dumaguete City is known as a University Town with the presence of old quality universities (two schools have already celebrated their 100 years of existence) despite of just being a small city. More aptly called a town rather than a city when some years back industrialization hadn't hit the place. A better testament of this is during vacation as the place metamorphosed from a buzzling city filled with students to a quiet city. Students from all over the country and different parts of the world have come to study. A clean and environment friendly place, very low crime rate, has rustic and layback lifestyle (where it has a life on its own and deprived from the chaos that is besetting this country), and most importantly the quality education it offers makes Dumaguete City an ideal and conducive place for learning.

I found myself in a Rivendell-like place in Dumaguete during a campus tour. Foundation University is the loveliest campus I have ever visited. It is small compared to the other more prestigious universities I've visited, but the place is reminscient of elven lore that has fascinated me in the movie Lord of the Rings.

http://photos1.blogger.com/img/179/2893/640/DSC01211.jpg

In the middle of the campus is a garden. A fish pond covered with lilies is the centerpiece, surrounded by study nooks shaded by bright-colored bouganvillas. At the far end of the garden is a statue of Dr. Jose Rizal as a writer. Seeing places like these, I now know why they call Dumaguete a writer's haven.

http://photos1.blogger.com/img/179/2893/640/DSC01212.jpg

Underneath bougainvilla trees, Foundation University students study, conduct group meetings or simply enjoy a relaxing time with friends. Such is the work of their BOT Chairman, Dean Sinco, a US-educated architect, who gave each corner of the university a daub of his creativity.

http://photos1.blogger.com/img/179/2893/640/DSC01215.jpg

Foundation University is non-sectarian and non-profit, yet it instills a strong sense of values among its students. Its president, Dr. Mira Sinco, is one lady with a passion for values and ethics formation. She is also like a strict mother. There are times when she catches a male student wearing earrings, she would tell him "I think those earrings look better on me." She then borrows the earrings for the whole day, and returns it when the student is ready to leave the campus. This lady can also be seen around campus carrying a pair of scissors, offering a free haircut to male students caught with long hair.

http://photos1.blogger.com/img/179/2893/640/DSC01224.jpg

Beneath the classic look of the university grounds, are advanced facilities that can support a medical transcription business. Entheos IT, a ICT company that has set up operations inside the university, employs graduates of medical courses who are trained to transcribe audio clips of doctors from abroad. This is one of the job opportunities that await the university graduates. Now they don't have to go to the overpopulated and overpolluted Manila just to get a job. They can enjoy their Rivendell while working inside high-tech facilities.

The town of Amlan is known for its fishing industry.

BUDYAS FESTIVAL – November 30

The coastal Barangay of Tandayag has two chapels, one in Tandayag Norte and another in Tandayag Sur. The budyas is a ritual blessing of the fishermen and their fishing gear on the beach in front of the south chapel, after which the images of the two patrons of Amlan, Saints Peter and Paul, are transported to the northern chapel in a fluvial procession of elaborately decorated sea craft. Street dancing follows, with the contingents in fish folk motif. A feature of the town’s November 30 fiesta. Old ritual on the beach to invoke good fortune on fishing vessels and paraphernalia, followed by fluvial procession of decorated boats. Budyas festival is a traditional ritual on the waterfront of the town of Amlan where offerings are made for the spirits of the sea to invoke good fortune for the fishermen and their fishing implements. The images of St. Peter and St. Paul are then ferried on a lavishly decorated boat followed by other well decorated seacrafts from the chapel of Tandayag Sur (south) to the chapel of Tandayag Norte (north). This fluvial procession is held every 30th day of November, the town fiesta of Amlan. A Catholic church Mass follows the procession which is then concluded with a streetdancing to the town plaza where a field presentation is finally held.

The term "Buglasan" is derived from "buglas", a tall, napier-like reed which once covered the entire island of Negros. Natives of the island are said to call the place Buglas many many years ago.

RODEO competition, fireworks display, street dancing and "showdown'' competition, with alluring booths portraying the uniqueness, wealth and creativity of every locality, mixed together, to produce a crowd-drawer show. Sandurot Festival – November 25

Dumaguete is known as the city of gentle people as the residents are friendly and hospitable. It welcomes people from foreign shores as well as from neighboring islands in a gesture of fellowship or "pakigsandurot" to make them feel at home and to live with them in peace and harmony. The cherished custom of hospitality is preserved in the "Sandurot" festival which is an annual celebration held during the fiesta week of the city every 25th of November. The festival starts with the "Pakighimamat" or the traditional ritual on the beach to welcome the arrival of strangers. This is followed by the "Pasundayag" or streetdancing along the main streets of the city. The concluding part of the festival is the "Pasigarbo" or the showdown of talents to celebrate sharing and unity. Participants of the festival come from the local schools as well as from the different barangays of the city.

A joyful celebration of the people of Dumaguete, their innate hospitality, friendliness, and their propensity to live harmoniously with people of different race, religion, and cultural beliefs. Through the course of history and to the present time, the people of Dumaguete have always been known to welcome strangers from different shores and countries, and to live with them in complete peace and understanding. This is the innate trait of Dumagueteños celebrated by the Sandurot Festival. Held during the city fiesta in November at the Rizal Boulevard, the festival reenacts the coming of these foreigners and how, with dance and song, they were welcomed by the natives. It is participated in by city barangays and/or schools, with each contingent representing a foreign culture.

The group, wearing the chosen country's native costume, will then perform an intricately choreographed dance, interpreting the meaning of "Sandurot", which means genuine unity and sharing. In the local language, it means "arrival", and that's what it celebrates: the arrival of various foreign peoples and cultures to this seaside city. The parade, organized by the barangays, displays the costumes of various immigrant cultures: Chinese, Spanish, and Japanese, among many others. Of course, there is also the indispensable rhythmic dancing. The Sandurot festival is comprised of the re-enactment, held right on the shore of the boulevard, street dancing, and a contest of the different participating contingents and is usually participated by the different barangays, schools, and other government and non-government organizations. It is a lively, colorful affair, most awaited by the citizens of Dumaguete.

The natives thought they were asked for the name of the pile and answered "Inoquitan". From then on, the Spaniards called the place "Inoquitan". In time, the name "Ayuquitan" was adapted from the phrase "may inoquitan". This story is the theme for the town's colorful festival--the Ayuquitan festival. Yagyag Festival – Last Sunday of April
National Champion of the Department of Tourism's Festival of Festivals Competition
Philippines' Ambassadors of Goodwill

Cangmating is a small barangay of the town of Sibulan situated along its coastline. In this area, the "cagang" or land crab (cardisoma carniflex) and the "alalasan" (episesarma singaparense) are plenty during the last quarter of the year. Thousands of these creatures crawl out of its habitat at night to mate and lay their eggs along the shoreline and riverbanks. The spawning process is locally referred to as "pagyag-yag". At the start of this season, the local residents bring out their bamboo baskets, crab traps and coconut -frond torches to gather the matured crabs which they cooked and sold or bartered for farm crops from the neighboring barangays. To honor this practice and tradition, the barangay government initiated a festival held every last Sunday of April to highlight the barangay fiesta of Cangmating on May 1. The movements of the crabs during the courting, mating and laying periods are the themes of the streetdancing and field presentation during the festival. To date, the Yag Yag festival has won a national competition held in Manila, Philippines and was judged as the champion of the Philippine festivals. The festival was also brought to Japan where it was shown to the Japanese to promote tourism for the province of Oriental Negros.

Sinulog De Tanjay – July 24

"Saulog de Tanjay" is held every July 24th, the day before the city's fiesta. Before, it was known as "Sinulog" but has been renamed to "Saulog" to distinguish it from the Sinulog of Cebu. It features a unique reenactment of the battle between the Christians and the Moros. The natives of Tanjay were christianized by the Spanish friars in the name of Saint James the Greater when they came to the eastern coast of Negros for a religious expedition. Tanjay was regularly frequented by the Moros who had a knack in seizing the beautiful local maidens. The natives during such battles never failed to call on their patron saint, St. James the Greater for aid and protection. Miraculously, the Moros had never won in any of these battles. To commemorate such historical event, the "Saulog de Tanjay" festival was born.

this just came out from my mind.. i think this year has the most number of hotels that opened.. (well, only 3 but it rarely happens to dgte or any growing city for that matter..) which indicates that the demand is high since the number of tourist visits went up for the past years..

http://img97.imageshack.us/img97/5994/jabel1ae0.jpg
-- i dnt know whats the name.. but this will defnitely a hotel..

http://img96.imageshack.us/img96/7537/palwalp9.jpg
-- hotel palwa

-- and one in downtown area.. the almost finished 4 storey arcade and hotel..

-- and yeah, im considering bethel's expansion for more rooms @ the fifth level (their former skydeck)

but still, i dnt think these are enough to cater the ever increasing tourist visits especially that buglasan is taking place.. it is expected that more or less 200,000 local and foriegn visitors will come and witness the month long event including the octoberfest @ the boulevard..

last year's buglasan made dumaguete realized that hotel rooms here are very insuffecient.. maybe thats why there are a number of hotels opening this year..

Hope to post some pictures of that activity soon. And hope to have tons more this Buglasan Festival. Dumaguete and Oriental Negros rocks!!!

Last September 28, Dumaguetenos were treated to two successful performances of the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra, the country’s leading orchestra and one of the top ensembles in Asia.

The concerts were held inside the beautiful Foundation University Campus at the Sofia Soller Sinco Hall. The afternoon performance was attended mostly by students who were treated to a rich repertoire of timeless classical music. It was a chance for them to see an all Filipino professional artists orchestra perform here in Dumaguete City.

The evening Gala performance was well attended by Dumaguete City?s who?s who, led by Mayor Agustin Perdices. Guests were greeted by gracious usherettes wearing beautifully designed Filipiniana sinamay gowns. It was truly an all Filipino night with the world?s best music played to an appreciative audience.

The evening affair was a big success, guests were treated to a variety of musical numbers; from the haunting Dumaguete Hymn and Visayan hit Matud Nila to Schubert and Beethoven Symphonies.

The debonaire Fil-Am Conductor, Maestro Eugene Frederick Castillo captivated the audience with his energy and charisma; his baton conducting an art in itself, his fluid beat mesmerizing the captive audience.
Each piece was well applauded and he gave the audience a special treat with the call for encore; a medley of pieces from the Sound of Music that charmed the hearts of the audience.

Guest Conductor that night was our own Carmelo Elli, Conductor and Choir Director of the FU Abuhuni Band, who conducted one of the music pieces.
It was a pleasure watching the performers; there was joy and passion in their expression as they played their instruments. I saw one performer deeply engrossed in his music with a soft smile in his face.

It was laudable for Foundation University to bring the PPO to our beautiful City; though this is not the first time the PPO played in our city, the Dumaguete Community will always appreciate the chance to hear concerts played by the best performers in the country.

It is yet another laurel to the cultural affluence of our City.

Nobody seems to make a big fuss about PBA last anymore. It is coming to our city almost every season when there are scheduled out-of-town games. But wait until the big international athletic events start coming here once our state-of-the-art and all-weather sports complex is finished.

Dumaguete's buglasan booth is on the replica of the Silliman Hall as this symbolizes Dumaguete's status as a University town since it is the very first american academic building in Oriental Negros being made from hardwood coming from a demolished opera house in New York, USA. It's exhibit inside is on one common theme: Dumaguete schools and universities.
Teletech also occupies a small portion on the booth with two cubicles working on with two call center agents. Dumaguete's booth is fully air-conditioned. I think this is the Best Dumaguete Booth ever.

BY JUANCHO GALLARDE
The Visayan Daily Star, Monday, October 16, 2006

The realization of the Metro Dumaguete diversion road costing about P400 million is underway.

The project had been included in the list of the Central Philippines Supra Region and endorsed by the Regional Development Council, Dumaguete Mayor Agustin Perdices and Region 7 RDC chairman Gov. George Arnaiz said.

It was strongly endorsed by the Department of Public Works and Highways in the region through assistant regional director Gloria Dindin, in her first endorsement dated Sept. 27, 2006.

Dindin forwarded the construction estimates of the diversion road project to the acting secretary of the DPWH in Manila, and the feasibility study of the project was already approved.

The findings and recommendations showed that the diversion road is technically and economically viable for improvement or construction in three alternative assignments. However, of the three, Alternative C, or for realignment is being recommended primarily due to social and environmental considerations.

The recommended alignment, that would traverse an idle land, would entail a lesser budget for acquisition of right-of-way and faster pacing of activities during the pre-construction and construction stages.

When completed, the diversion road will greatly ease traffic in the poblacion areas of Metro Dumaguete that is composed of the municipalities of Bacong, Valencia, Sibulan and Dumaguete.*JG

oriental negros
a beautiful blending of the old and new

Source: Manila Bulletin
Author: By Annalyn S. Jusay
Date: 2004-11-04

Having traveled all over the country, I know very well when I have reached a warm and welcoming place, so warm you can almost call it home. This was the pleasant feeling I got when I arrived in Dumaguete City, the so-called "City of Gentle People" and capital of Negros Oriental.

http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/359/dgteonairne6.jpg

I fell in love with Dumaguete as soon as I checked in at the South Sea Resort Hotel which had spacious grounds lined with coconut trees and rooms overlooking the blue ocean. I could see two mountains dotting the horizon and the receptionist said those were Cebu and Siquijor islands which were a boat’s ride away.

After putting down my bag in the assigned accommodation, I settled for breakfast in the open-air café which was beside the swimming pool. I sampled the native delicacy budbud which was Negros Oriental’s answer to the churros con chocolate. Budbud, which originated in the city of Tanjay, is their word for suman which could either be dipped in a rich cup of native chocolate or matamis na bao (molasses). Capping this off was a slice of ripe mango which, when taken with the customary cup of coffee, made my morning complete.

Our group from Manila was invited by Negros Oriental Gov. George Arnaiz to witness the province-wide fiesta called the Buglasan Festival. Locals are especially proud of the fact that their mother of all festivals emerged the best during a nationwide competition sponsored by the Department of Tourism (DoT) last year, through the "WOW Philippines" campaign.

Watching the festivities at the city’s Lamberto Macias Sports and Cultural Center, our group was duly impressed by the talents of the participating teams. The costumes attracted the eye with their full use of colors and indigenous materials while the choreography won our hearts with their precise movements and the infectious enthusiasm of the participants. Filipino festivals pay tribute to native religiosity and our Catholic spirituality while heralding the pomp and pageantry of the islands. The Buglasan festival was no exception.

http://www.southtravels.com/asia/philippines/gifs/buglasan01.gif

"This year’s Buglasan is the biggest and grandest we’ve had so far because for the first time, all of the local government units agreed to participate. The festival is a must-see because it showcases our province’s four T’s, namely: technology, talent, trained people and tourism," Gov. Arnaiz enthused.

http://img100.imageshack.us/img100/5599/buglasanfireworkska9.jpg

Provincial board member Mariant Escano Villegas who heads the province’s committee on tourism, culture and arts said, "what’s admirable is that the presentations entail the efforts of everyone in the community. The costumes, designs and the choreography were done by the artistic members of the town or city itself."

In the main plaza of Dumaguete City, colorful and eye-catching booths were set up highlighting the products and tourist attractions of the five cities and 20 municipalities comprising Negros Oriental. For example, we marveled at some exotic shells and furniture from Manjuyod, hand-woven Negros silk from Kanlaon, papier mache items from Vallehermoso, and native bags from Ayungon.

http://img172.imageshack.us/img172/8687/whitesandbarxb9.jpg

I also got a preview of the beauty of Bais Bay. The place, now emerging as a top ecotourism destination, is where one can view dolphins and pygmy sperm whales surfacing from their natural habitat. If you’re lucky, the amazing mammals can even put up an acrobatic show for you.

http://static.flickr.com/91/222725819_cb83aa9b18.jpg?v=0

In Dumaguete, I particularly liked Rizal Boulevard which is the counterpart of Manila’s Baywalk. The area — which doubles as a promenade and a pier – is very cosmopolitan with its row of cozy restaurants facing the sea. We had fun sampling the pasta specialties of Mamia’s Bar and Resto and then on to the famous Sans Rival Café for their heavenly sylvannas. Aside from this, we relished Dumaguete’s home-cooked food which is common throughout Negros – inihaw or grilled specialties served with achara and kinilaw which is fresh fish marinated in vinegar.

Cosmopolitan Philippines September 2006 issue features Dumaguete as one of the 8 cities aside from Manila, Cebu, Davao, Baguio, Davao, Bico, and Iloilo where vibrant nightlife coexists with relaxation and sophistication as manifested by the presence of Hayahay Treehouse Bar and Restaurant
Don Atilano Steakhouse
Mamia's Bar and Restaurant
Cafe Memento
El Camino Blanco Bar and Disco, and ofcourse
the Rizal Boulevard where a stretch of bars, disco bars, videoke bars, restaurants (ranging from Perisan Cuisine to Mexican, Indian, European, American, and more..) , hotels, videoke bars, and more line up the whole thoroughfare..

The section is featured in their Hot City Guide Section. And yeah, ofcourse, Cosmopolitan does not feature just any city unless Hot Guys and Gals exist.. (duh?) and of course, Dumaguete has lots of them!..;)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It is worth noting that Dumaguete has a thriving foreign community primarily composed of Chinese, Koreans and Arabs who are impressed with its educational system.
Silliman University
St. Paul University Dumaguete
http://www.i-oriental.com/content/images/institutions/spud.gif
Negros Oriental State University
http://www.i-oriental.com/content/images/institutions/norsu-logo.gif
Easily the most famous is Silliman University which sits on a campus lined with centuries-old acacia trees. It is one of the oldest educational institutions in Asia. We checked out their marine laboratory and museum which has the second largest collection of marine mammal bone skeletons in the world, after Japan. The other top-caliber educational institutions are the Foundation University; St. Paul’s College which is the first St. Paul’s in the country and Negros State University.
From former top telecoms executive Fred Dael, we learned that Negros Oriental pioneered the fiber optic technology in the country. In fact, their system is more sophisticated than Manila in terms of wireless and wi-fi applications.
"In Negros Oriental, only one town does not have broadband service. Because of our advanced status and our large pool of highly skilled, English-speaking graduates, the province is gearing itself to be the next haven of call centers and business process outsourcers in the Philippines. So far, 10 call centers have signified their intention to be based in Dumaguete and we thus expect to generate 4,000 to 5,000 jobs by the end of the year," Dael noted.
My own impression is that Negros Oriental is a delicious blending of the old and the new, of natural beauty and manmade rituals. Experiencing Dumaguete alone gave me a high. Its leisurely lifestyle coupled by the profusion of seas and trees calmed my frazzled nerves harassed by the demands of the city. All at once, the province felt like a second home to me and there’s no doubt that I want to be back here in the future.
Apo Island is a tiny bit of paradise in the central Philippines. Its beautiful reef teems with colorful schooling fishes, sharks, sea turtles and, of course, hundreds of kinds of corals. Residents make a good living from fishing as well as from other trades and crafts.
But it was not always so. More than 20 years ago, the reef was nearly fished out. Desperate fishermen used cyanide, dynamite and weighted nets to force scarce fish out of the corals — while destroying the habitat the fish depended on. As their reef collapsed, fishermen had to travel greater distances in small boats to find enough fish for their families to survive.
Then biologists from nearby Silliman University proposed an unheard-of plan to the people of Apo: Stop fishing in one-quarter of the island's waters. Let the fish find sanctuary — and breed and mature — in this no-fishing zone, and they will replenish the surrounding waters where fishing with nondestructive methods is allowed. But the most daring proposition was that the people of Apo would create and manage the sanctuary themselves.
With little to lose, the islanders agreed to try the plan. Within a few years, they saw amazing results as their waters once again filled with fishes. At the same time, the people learned other livelihoods to take some burden off the reef as their main source of income. Today the entire Apo Island reef is a community-managed marine reserve that includes the fish sanctuary. It is a model for other Philippine fishing communities as well as a tourist destination.
Apo Island might not have the beaches of Boracay but it is what's beneath the surface that makes people from all over the world come and wanting to witness the beauty of this underwater paradise.
I got to go to the Buglasan last night... looking great as usual, but Dumaguete's booth was a disappointment considering they reportedly spent P300,000 on it. I was planning to take pictures to post here, but it's hard with all the crowds moving around.
Hey, there was some presentation of Miss Dumaguete candidates and they were doing a nice dance on the stage when all of a sudden the music and lights on the stage were cut off. There was a few awkward seconds when the candidates were just still on the stage, not sure what to do I guess, but then they filed off in a dignified manner. After a few minutes the music and lights came back and the emcee said they experienced some technical difficulties due to some "unscrupulous persons" that pulled out the cables. Hmmph.
By the way, staying in Cebu for the past few weeks has really made me come to appreciate how special Dumaguete is... Cebu has gotten a lot of economic development but it's also come at the price of cleanliness and safety. Dumaguete is a big city without feeling too big, and it's a nice place to live. :)
Some changes I noticed:
- They have new parking things along one side of Hibbard Avenue going through Silliman, so that people hopefully park their cars in an orderly way
- Teletech building is done and it's lit up at night
- The cementing work in front of the Ceres terminal is still not done. Ugh, it's taking forever.
- There's finally some work being done at the future site of Robinsons. Just clearing the ground for now, I guess.
- Similar work being done at the new Sto. Rosario subdivision... maybe they'll start building homes there soon, I dunno.
- Businesses are opening up at that Uymatiao place.
- Mansons closed and is replaced by... forgot the name.
- "Check Inn Pension House" is further starting to take shape
- The Boulevard still doesn't have that overlay of tiles. What happened to that idea?
-- but dumaguete's booth this year was rather much better than previous dumaguete booths, right? (bell tower, boulevard..) at least this year, it is more focused on the university city aspect.. i learned so much from my visit on the booth. it was just then that i discovered that silliman hall is a UNESCO heritage site.. wew..
-- there was alsa a time when me and my friend was touring around the booth area when suddenly, there was black out! freedom park was soooo dark that the lights that i only see was those of the toys that light up in the hands of the vendors. good thing the crowd didnt panic.. i had so many imaginations crawling in mind mind that time.. u know.. bombs? hehe.. but after a few minutes, the electricity was back as well as the activities and the festive mood of the people and place, like nothing happened//
-- boulevard's tiling project? yeah, ive noticed that, too.. ill try and ask my father about it.. hehehe.. they only managed to tile it on the north side.. i wonder why...
We all have that feeling that Dumaguete is indeed a big city without feeling big, even my Korean friends notice it as we surveyed the whole city. It's a good feeling we people from Dumaguete and other areas share, and it feels good. Some cities are big, but in many aspects they are small. You look at other cities in the Philippines and there is just no place quite like Dumaguete. She's special even if she is at the tail of any survey, because no Philippine criteria just could fit in the advantages and niceties that my beloved city has. Whew, I am proud of my city!
dumaguete is a big city without feeling it very big in the sense that dumaguete has all the things a big metropolitan has yet still maintains the serenity, the homie feeling, the coziness, the peacefullness, the feeling of a typical university town where u can just see students everywhere enjoying the conduciveness of the place for study. well, basically, dumaguete certainly has it all - the environment, the rich history and culture, the man power, the cosmopolitan feel, the fresh air, the parks, the restos, the shopping centers, the technology, and the universities.. and on the other hand, its a practical city where u could not find things not needed in a city. not all city has all these things in a very good harmony.. well, who doesnt love dumaguete?! she can easily snatch anyone's heart.. ryt? ryt?.. ;)
Buglasan Festival opens in Dumaguete City
October 15-21, 2006 issue – Metropost
ORIENTAL NEGROS’ BIGGEST FESTIVAL—the Buglasan Festival of Festivals-formally kicked off to a grand start last Friday with a peek at the first Buglasan Festival held 25 years ago at Foundation University.
The Inagta of Siaton, the wedding rites of Dauin and the Polka Biana of Zamboanguita were performed at the Sofia Soller Sinco Hall by the original dancers who first put the Province on the Philippines cultural map in 1981.
“I’m so happy that we were again given the chance to perform. There was never a doubt in my mind that we could still do it,” said Proceso Tuballa, the lead male dancer in the Dauin wedding rites.
Now 82, Tuballa still fascinated the audience along with the other dancers who portrayed how wedding was done in Dauin in the early years, which included a rondalla that provided the background music.
There also was the Inagta of Siaton, performed by male dancers of barangay Datag every Dec. 6, when Siaton celebrates its annual fiesta. The Inagta, originally performed by the Agta tribe, pays homage to their patron saint, San Nicolas de Barre, and features the movements of wildlife.
And there was the Polka Biana, performed by the dancers of Zamboanguita. The Polka Biyana is attributed to a jolly fat woman named Flaviana who used to frequent the dance venues of the town.
These and other dances were performed by the Negros Oriental Buglasan contingent during the 1981 Folk Arts Festival in Manila, where they caught the eye of National Artist for Dance Ramon Obusan.
Obusan was moved by the originality of the dances that he came over to document them and include them in his Folklorico repertoire.
Today’s Buglasan Festival of Festivals has grown to become more than just a dance showcase. It is no longer complete without the booths of the many local government units and concessionaires, as well as an array of mini restaurants at the Capitol Area in Dumaguete City.
Provincial officials, led by Gov. George Arnaiz, ViceGov. Jose Baldado and some members of he Provincial Board, as well as Cong. Herminio Teves, went around the booth area to start the festivities.
Among the more than 80 events scheduled for the 17-day celebration are a showdown among festivals and street dancing, rodeo and horse show competition, lutong garbo, fireworks display, and a dance and singing competition.
The Buglasan showdown to be held on Friday, Oct. 20, at 8 a.m. at the Lamberto Macias Sports & Cultural Center and street dancing around Dumaguete streets which starts at 2 pm on the same day, represents the local fiestas in the municipalities and affords an opportunity for the public to witness the colorful activities in one place at one time.
There will also be an awarding ceremony for this year’s outstanding Oriental Negrenses on Saturday, Oct. 28.
The Buglasan Festival of Festivals will be capped by a fireworks competition on Sunday, Oct. 29 at the Perdices Coliseum.
Oriental Negros’ Buglasan Festival of Festivals is touted as the biggest and longest-running festival in the country, bringing together the different festivals of the 25 towns and cities in the province for a unified 17-day non-stop celebration from Oct. 13 to 29.
MABINAY CAVING
http://www.dumagueteoutdoors.com/caving/mabinay/img/crystalcave.jpg
Mabinay is an upland municipality situated 88 kilometers north of Dumaguete City
right near the provincial boundary of Negros Oriental and Occidental.
It is known to have some of the best cave system in the Philippines.
In this municipality alone, there are bouts a hundred or more caves.
http://www.dumagueteoutdoors.com/caving/mabinay/img/pix1.jpg
To date, the South Negros Speleo, Mountain & Cave Rescue team, have already explored about 45
caves here in Mabinay and we have listed prospective caves that are to be explored
this summer, when the water is low. 60 % of the caves that we explored have
subterranean river and many end in siphon, nearly all dip towards the north.
http://www.dumagueteoutdoors.com/caving/mabinay/img/pix2.jpg
In the 45 caves the we explored, we selected eight (8) caves for the public to see,
expore, conquer and enjoy. We classified this eight caves into three(3) levels of
exploration, four (4) caves for beginners, two (2) caves for advance and (2) caves
for extreme caving. The remaining 37 caves, we leave them alone and let the cave and
its dwellers enjoy their undisturbed environment.
ROCK CLIMBING AND CANYONING
http://www.dumagueteoutdoors.com/rock_climbing/img/canyoning.jpg
Climbing covers a range of recreational, adventurous or sporting activities
involving using one's hands and feet to move up the surface of a steep object.
http://www.dumagueteoutdoors.com/rock_climbing/img/climb2.jpg
Evolving from the pursuit of mountaineering, rock climbing is the scaling of steep rocky surfaces, usually using ropes and other
climbing equipment for protection.
http://www.dumagueteoutdoors.com/rock_climbing/img/climb1.jpg
APO ISLAND ROCK CLIMBING
This tiny island off the coast of Dumaguete is almost completely
ringed with 20m cliffs of stable limestone, offering fascinating
climbing in a stunning setting. The island is surrounded by crystal
water and extensive reefs, ideal for post-climb diving expeditions.
http://www.dumagueteoutdoors.com/rock_climbing/img/apo.jpg
Truly fearless (or perhaps foolhardy) climbers can cap off their
ascent with a 12m dive into the ocean below. There are five established routes,
ranging from 5.6 to 5.10, and the potential is there for many others. The island is a 30-minute boat ride from shore, and it is worth seeking the help of local climbers – contact the Dumaguete-based Cuernos de Negros Mountaineering Club, who can also arrange mountain
treks into the interior of southern Negros.
MOUNTAIN CLIMBING
For a mountain is not just a mass of rock and earth rising above the plain.
A mountain is a landmark which people have seen for centuries. Such a landmark
must have colored their thoughts and excited their imagination. It is often
said that people climb a mountain because "it is there". it is a witty remark,
but it is also profoundly true. I think the real reason why people climb mountains
because they feel the need to do so. They feel that they are not real master of the
land until they haved scaled its heights.
Mount Kanlaon
Explore an active volcano, Mt. Kanlaon on Negros Island. This active volcano,
at almost 2600 meters high, is one of the 5 highest mountains in the Philippines.
It's new crater is a breathtaking 400 m deep and around 100 m wide.
http://www.dumagueteoutdoors.com/mountain_climbing/img/kanlaon.jpg
The trail to the top is steep and we'll climb through different vegetation zones from rich agriculture land to thick rain forest until reaching the lunar-like landscape surrounding the crater .Taking three days to explore this mountain, we'll spend one night at a pension house and the next night at our camp on the crater saddle in tnts. From there view the whole Visaya
region with the clouds just a stone's throw away. (source www.active-philippines.com)
Mount Talinis
Negros Oriental’s prominent peaks, the Cuernos de Negros or Horns of Negror
rise 5,095 feet above sea level and are situated 9 km.
Mt. Talinis is located in Negros Oriental, about 1 hour away from
downtown Dumaguete City. Nature lovers can enjoy the unspoiled scenery,
Nailig and Yagunyum lakes, and the lush vegetation.
In yesterday's (10/30/2006) Manila Bulletin
The Philippines stands to benefit from the recent "merger" announced by two US-based call center operators as their combined resources could result in more outsourced jobs for the country.
This was the view aired by a legislator and the head of the Philippine subsidiary of Nashville, Tennessee-based ClientLogic, which recently acquired Omaha, Nebraska-based Sitel Corp. for 0 million in cash.
Both ClientLogic and Sitel have significant presence in the country. ClientLogic has about 3,000 employees in its call center sites in Baguio and Pasig City, while Sitel employs around 2,000 agents in its two locations in Metro Manila.
The combined entity will continue to be named ClientLogic Corp., and will have approximately 65,000 employees across 28 countries. Dave Garner, CEO of ClientLogic, will head the merged company.
Catanduanes Rep. Joseph Santiago, former chief of the National Telecommunications Commission, said in a statement that the merger bodes well for the Philippines.
"We are absolutely confident that as the new and enlarged ClientLogic pursues the strategy of serving more business offshore, where margins are higher, the company will move toward relegating even more jobs to the Philippines," he stated.
Dan Reyes, country manager of ClientLogic Philippines, said in an interview that the deal will give the company more muscle to take advantage of the outsourcing boom.
"The skilled manpower of Sitel will definitely give a big boost to our operations. They wouldn’t have grown that big if the people were not good," Reyes said, adding that demand for outsourcing work is still outstripping manpower supply.
Reyes said the combined company can also leverage on their respective expertise in dealing with clients from the same industry.
ClientLogic’s clients include electronics and media giant Sony Corp.; direct broadcast satellite subscription TV provider DIRECTV Group Inc.; financial services giant ABN AMRO Holding N.V.; digital video recorder services provider Tivo Inc.; Internet software and services provider United Online Inc.; and telecommunications provider BT Group plc.
Prior to the declared merger, ClientLogic had bared plans to build a new 300-seat call center either in Cebu City or in Dumaguete City.
The merged company will be privately owned since it is ClientLogic who will be the surviving entity, as opposed to Sitel which is publicly held. "Currently, we don’t have any plans to go public. The focus now is to make the merger successful," Reyes commented.
New York Stock Exchange-listed Sitel manages over two million daily customer interactions via the telephone, e-mail, and the Internet. The company has 101 global contact centers in 26 countries.
Sitel’s call centers in the Philippines support the customers of 15 mostly US-based clients and Telecom Corporation of New Zealand Ltd.
According to Reyes, the transaction is expected to be completed in the next 60 to 90 days. "Right now, we’re in status quo because it’s still a definitive agreement, although the boards of the two companies have already approved the merger."
The combination of ClientLogic and Sitel will create a company with revenue of over .7 billion, and one of the most diverse client bases, service offerings, and geographic footprint in the industry.
The combined entity will offer clients worldclass options for onshore, nearshore, and offshore customer care solutions, in over 145 facilities throughout the Americas, EMEA, and Asia Pacific.
Only few cities in the country has this Olympic standard facility. I am confident that it will boost athletic activities in the province! Another good work by our very good governor!
I read an article about a month ago... I think Clientlogic is choosing Cebu, due to the exclusivity contract that Dumaguete had with Teletech.
But other BPO provider like software, animation, medical transcription, engineering design, publication, and other non-core activities are very much welcome in Dumaguete.
