I think its Mary Joy 2.... hmmhmmm

I don't remember the name of the boat, but it was Aleson Shipping, and the route was Dumaguete-Zamboanga-Sandakan. They had two boats before; one plying this route, and the other I think was somewhere plying Southern Tagalog routes, pero nilun-od man.

Dumaguete is very capable. It wouldn't cost too much to adjust the pier for customs and immigration.

Guam? good luck sa biyahe! you'll be passing over Philippine deep and Marianas Trench.:lol::lol:

Hahaha! The two deepest waters in the world. It'll be smooth over those parts, but where the deep becomes shallow in a short distance, that's where the fun begins with big waves.

Philippines a threat to India

Philippines is taking aggressive strides to catch up with India as the desired destination in BPO offshoring. According to a study by neoIT, an offshore advisory and management firm, Philippines is preparing eight other Filipino cities besides Manila to foster this growth in the country. This country is developing Cebu, Davao, Clark, Cagayan de Oro, Illoilo, Bacalod, Baguio and Dumaguete and is making these destinations 'outsource ready' with a diverse portfolio of specialisations. In India, centres like Gurgaon, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad and Pune have been developed and now firms are being urged to branch out into second tier cities like Mysore, Mangalore and Coimbatore. Philippines seems to be adopting the same route. According to the study, Metro Manila has long dominated the country's other cities as an outsourcing destination. Driven by a need for broad-based growth, the Philippines government has assumed the task of developing alternative, smaller cities in the Philippines and is putting a slew of catalysts like infrastructure, finance and people. The report adds that though Manila is the most suitable city for offshoring, increasing costs of operation and competitive pressures on labour supply will continue to reduce the city's attractiveness. "Cebu, Davao and Clark are emerging as attractive outsourcing locations, with competent labour pools, lower costs, strong government support and fast-improving technical infrastructure," the report highlighted. The increasingly competitive environment in Manila has also led to some outsourcing organisations to consider alternative locations that still have room to grow. "Having caught wind of that trend, other local governments have begun promoting their cities along with the national government to establish new economic and technology centres in multiple cities throughout the country as an additional incentive for ITO and BPO suppliers," the report noted.

OFFSHORING TIMES

we are fast catching up with the Indian BPO industry and if they register neutral or negative growth in the next few years, the Philippines will take over as the world's #1 outsourcing destination

I can only imagine if the city government's protection clause over Teletech did not exist at all, Convergys and E-Telecare (Stream) could have long been operating in Dumaguete

Sa Tanang na mention kinsa ang pinaka cute? na syudad...eeehehehehhe....:lol::lol:

of the total 15 BPO destinations in the Philippines, 7 are non-HUC's

1) Dumaguete City
2) Clark Ecozone, Pampanga
3) Urdaneta City, Pangasinan
4) Dagupan City, Pangasinan
5) Lipa City, Batangas
6) Legazpi City, Albay
7) Palo, Leyte

how many years of this protection clause?

3 years i think.. not a wise move by any means.. playing safe or maybe they still lacked faith in the city's capability to attract major BPO companies.. that was way back 2004-2005 pa

Mitsubishi doesn't want to be left behind

-Dumaguete now has a subdealer for Honda cars as Jerell Motors, the former subdealer for Isuzu (an Ayala Corporation), is now dealing with Honda Cars (another Ayala corporation).

-I just learned that Hyundai is planning to put up a full dealership here in the city. Did you notice that they have been displaying at Robinsons for more than 2 months now?

Jerell Motors was also the 1st dealer of Toyota and managed the Ken Taxi services during the late 1990's. and since Isuzu already have their own dealership, they shifted to Honda, nice..

The MAB queuing system is akin to the flight arrival-departure monitors in airports, or to the now-serving numbers display in some banks. The numbers in red are the room numbers of the doctors. The numbers in white on a blue background are the priority numbers. Patients should periodically check their priority numbers, watch the screen and listen for the automated voice to call out the number on their print-outs.

^^ it's a question that even the government agency with the sole authority to determine such, the NAMRIA, is not even sure..

the "3rd Largest Island of the Philippines" status is still a toss-up between Negros, Samar, and Palawan since the NAMRIA have acknowledged several disputes alluding to such claims, but so far there has been no solid findings from them, which only adds to the confusion..

even history/geography textbooks are not united on this, majority of textbooks point to Samar, while some point to Negros, and i even encountered one saying it's Palawan.

but personally, it's Samar, Negros, then Palawan.

'dem, the 3rd largest island of the Philippines is Samar Is. and I don't believe that Negros is 62nd largest island in the world.

Negros Island is 5th. Panay Is. is the 4th

Actually, the islands of Negros, Samar, Palawan, Mindoro, and Panay are pretty much the same size as each other; only about a 5sqkm difference between them (if I remember rightly).

Some other facts about Negros:

It is the most populated island after Luzon and Mindanao

It contains the highest peak in the Visayas (Kanlaon)

It is the only Visayan island divided by region (hopefully not for long)

There are more cities in Negros, than the rest of the Visayas put together.

it's really more than 5sq.km. difference between those 5 islands mentioned

Negros Occidental has the province with the most number of chartered cities in the Philippines, and soon another addition will come with the filing of a bill for the cityhood of Binalbagan

I spend one day in Dumaguete City and it was a big blast! :) I arrived at DGT Airport at 0830H via PAL and I was fetched by 2 of my officemates and friends and we headed to Sta. Teresa for a quick lunch and headed to SPi site for a short visit and giving some endorsements from the client.

After a while, I went to my friend's house which is closer to Robinsons Dumaguete. After few minutes, a group of four (including me) headed to Neva's for a pizza and pasta treat. I really love it especially the red curry pasta and the kuripot pizza :)

We made some laag at Silliman University for some picture moments and we headed to Rizal Boulevard for some walk and taking some photos while the sun started to set and lights were turned on. We headed to Sansrival to buy sylvannas and of course sansrival for some desserts. We proceed to Robinsons Dumaguete for some mall strolling.

It supposed to be called a day, when someone from SPi invited me to come to fiesta in a barangay in Zamboanguita. Some of the agents and me proceed to Ceres Terminal and rode a bus bound for Bayawan and after an hour, we arrived at Zamboanguita but I cannot forgot the name of the barangay.

We were shocked that the last trip of Ceres from Bayawan to Dumaguete is 9PM and we were in the house at 9:30PM. We ate some of famous food such as humba which is I love the sauce! At 11PM, we decided to ride a habal-habal and it was worth an experience. Passing through towns Zamboanguita, Dauin and Bacong and we headed to Dumaguete after an hour. And currently, I am preparing my things to catch the first bus trip of Ceres bound to Cebu for the Sinulog!

What a great experience I got in Dumaguete particularly in Negros Oriental! I will definitely be back for more adventures and travel experiences in the future!:)

 actually the only difference between their kuripot pizza and regular pizza is in the type of cheese being used.. kuripot has cheddar cheese which is cheaper than mozzarella (regular pizza) but no difference with the amount of toppings, hehehe

Dauin policemen undergo retraining (http://www.visayandailystar.com/2011/January/15/negor1.htm)

Thirty-four personnel from the Dauin police station in Negros Oriental had a seven-day retraining program as directed by the Philippine National Police.

Regional Director for Administration Senior Supt. Samuel Yordan yesterday said the Dauin PNP is the first police station in Central Visayas to undergo the retraining program. He said the Dauin police stations availed of the retraining program conducted by instructors from the PNP Regional headquarters.

He said the training module includes the four basic roles of the PNP which includes investigation, traffic, patrols and intelligence. It also consists of a seminar on proper behavior of police personnel, like good manners and right conduct.

Yordan said he hopes other police stations will also conduct the retraining program after the Dauin PNP.

Negros Oriental police provincial director, Senior Supt. Rey Lyndon Lawas, said they have been planning to conduct refresher training to all PNP police stations in the province. It is part of his target plan when he assumed office, he added.

The retraining of all PNP personnel was implemented following the series of controversies and scandals that have dragged the name of the entire organization.

Lawas said it was Dauin that showed interest in the retraining, as requested by Mayor Neil Credo.

He said he is thankful for the support of the local government unit in the training.

Credo also said they need their police personnel to be more alert and equipped with knowledge on environmental laws and in handling crisis situation. He said Dauin is a tourist destination where peace and order is a priority.*MA

Canadian docs slate mission in La Libertad (http://www.visayandailystar.com/2011/January/14/negor3.htm)

A group of 32 Canadian physicians will conduct a 10-day medical mission January 17 to 27, at the La Libertad Health Center in La Libertad, Negros Oriental.

Board Member Liland Estacion, chairperson on the Committee on Health of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, said the mission will be the first for the Canadian mission doctors in the Visayas.

La Libertad was chosen as venue for the mission because of the support of the local government unit and of Rep. Jocelyn Limkaichong (Neg. Or., 1st District).

Estacion said they expect about 3,000 patients. Among the services to be provided are dental care, medical check-up for infants and children, distribution of free vitamins and medicines, cataract operations, and free laboratory examination.

Special cases that need major operations have to undergo screening. Patients who will undergo major operations are advised to bring along two potential blood donors in case they will need blood transfusions during the operation.

Estacion said major operations will be done at the Guihulngan District Hospital while minor ones like cataract removal and dental care will be at the La Libertad Health Center.

Also a medical doctor by profession, Estacion said the Canadian doctors will be bringing their own equipment during the mission. The group also promised to donate their medical equipment later.

At present, they still cannot decide where to place the medical equipment to make sure they are properly utilized.

Meanwhile, the patients are also advised to bring their food so they will not starve while waiting for their turn.

Estacion added that the medical mission will help people who do not have the financial resources for hospitalization.*MA

Dumaguete is sad for she is gone but in pure joy for today the GOOD LORD has given Ma'am FILOMENA TAN CANG, the City's Role Mother of Faith, THE GIFT OF ETERNAL PEACE! She was the 2006 Outstanding Sillimanian for Christian Business Management awardee. Her High school Class of 1948 lost a generous leader.

 actually the only difference between their kuripot pizza and regular pizza is in the type of cheese being used.. kuripot has cheddar cheese which is cheaper than mozzarella (regular pizza) but no difference with the amount of toppings, hehehe

balik-balik lang, Dumaguete & Negros Oriental still has a lot to offer :)

Ang taste, bai, asa man ang lami or parehas ra. Is it better than the pizza place sa RPD. Ila serving, enough ra or bitin?

I'd say distinct ila taste...You can't say they are better, you can't say they are no better. Sometimes you will crave for the other, sometime for this one. What I can say is sulit ang price...

Panay, island, central Philippines, the northernmost of the Visayan Islands, between Negros and Mindoro islands. The sixth largest island in the Philippines, Panay is 150 km (100 mi) long and 120 km (80 mi) wide. It is bounded by the Sibuyan Sea on the north, the Visayan Sea on the east, the Sulu Sea on the south, and the Cuyo East Pass on the west. Coconuts are grown in the north and northeast, and corn is planted in the mountainous interior. Fishing, copper mining, sugar processing, and the manufacture of handicrafts, particularly piña, or pineapple, fiber, are important industries on the island.

Panay comprises four provinces: Aklan, Antique, Capiz, and Iloilo, which includes neighboring Guimaras. The cities of Iloilo in the south and Roxas in the north are connected by railroad and are the major commercial centers of Panay. The municipality of Panay was the first Spanish settlement on the island. Area, 12,300 sq km (4,750 sq mi); population (1990, including nearby Guimaras Island) 3,018,435.

Dauin targets revenue hike (http://www.visayandailystar.com/2011/January/17/negor2.htm)

Mayor Neil Credo of Dauin, Negros Oriental said the town aims for an increase in revenues this year, mostly from the town’s thriving tourism industry.

Dauin is the host municipality of the internationally famed dive destination, Apo Island, and has the most number of beach resorts in the province totaling 14, Credo added.

Credo also said Dauin earned more than P12 million in 2010 and it hopes to increase this by at least P1 million this year.

Of last year’s total revenues, the Dauin marine reserves contributed P5 million to P6 million from user’s fees and similar collections, he said.

Dauin is also undertaking development plans for the Baslay Hot Springs in Brgy. Baslay in Dauin as another tourist destination.

An ordinance, patterned after the Lake Balanan Development Authority, is now with the Provincial Board for approval of the creation of the Baslay Hot Springs Development Authority, Credo said.

Meanwhile, Credo lauded the Philippine National Police for identifying the police station in Dauin as the pilot area in Central Visayas for a refresher course for its police personnel.

The training, that ends Friday, includes among other training modules, crisis incident management, such as responding to hostage-taking situations, terrorist attacks and bomb threats, arrest, search and seizure procedures, and even communication skills lectures.*JFP

The Legacy of Dodo & Tuting
Jan 16, 2011

ATTY. FRANCISCO D. YAP
THE TOWN CRIER

The death of the late Governor Emilio “Dodo” Macias, II and Gove rnor Agustin “Tuting” Pe rdic es le ft a LEGACY to the Province of Negros Oriental which would inspire the succeeding politicians to emulate and follow.

The legacy they left after serving this province during their lifetime, is that they are not tainted at all with corruption. They were just ordinary human beings and they were not perfect but they were able to withstand the temptation of enriching themselves in office. The reason why they were allowed by the people to serve until they die is precisely because they have trust in them to be leaders of this province simply because of their integrity which is a legacy they left for the succeeding politicians to follow.

Indeed, it is a hard act to follow but everybody wants to die with a legacy of leaving their integrity intact until death. They were not perfect, they have enemies, they have also bad characteristics but to the end they have kept their integrity until death.

Prayers, caution greet new Guv
Jan 16, 2011

Seasoned political leaders of Negros Oriental have aired their prayers, support and caution for the newly assumed Governor Roel Degamo as he governs following the deaths of his predecessors governors Emilio “Dodo” Macias II and Agustin “Tuting” Perdices.

Both Macias and Perdices, owing to their long and vast experience, are considered by Degamo as “titans of public service” who are worthy to be emulated for their distinguished careers.

Former Bais City Mayor Hector “Tata” Villanueva and Former Governor Jose “Petit” Baldado are asking the people to join them in praying for Degamo’s success and appealed to those who are in doubt to “give the new governor the needed elbow room to prove his worth.”

Zamboanguita Mayor Kit Adanza and Bindoy Mayor Valente Yap underscored their confidence in the administration of Governor Degamo but is cautioning him to always listen to good and rational advice so he would never go wrong.

Vice-mayor Neil Salma implores God’s blessing and airs hope that Governor Degamo should follow his heart when making decisions for his constituents.

In a statement, First District Rep. Jocelyn Limkaichong said she is supporting the new leadership in all its good endeavors and urges Degamo to shun too much politicking but instead focus on continuing the unfinished programs of Governors Macias and Perdices to make Negros Oriental a great province through a fair and transparent governance.

That is in Mayabon, Zamboanguita Negros Oriental :lol::lol:...January 15 is their annual Fiesta....in honor of their patron saint....Sto. Niño....

Bayawan, Dumaguete contingents to join Sinulog de Cebu tomorrow

Two champion festival contingents in Negros Oriental will participate in the 2011 Sinulog de Cebu in Cebu tomorrow.

Bayawan City is fielding its Tawo-Tawo Festival to the Sinulog competitions, while Dumaguete City is entering its current Sandurot Festival champion, Senior Tourism Operations Officer Myla Mae Abellana said yesterday.

Mayor Manuel Sagarbarria and Mayor Rene Gaudiel will head the delegations from Dumaguete and Bayawan cities, respectively, with other local officials present to boost the morale of participants.

Most NegOr LGUs fail to comply with solid waste management act
by Rachelle M. Nessia

DUMAGUETE CITY, Negros Oriental, Jan. 17 (PIA) -- Almost all of the local government units (LGUs) here have not yet complied with the provisions set by the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act or RA 9003 which was signed into law in 2001.

RA 9003 orders LGUs to craft and adopt an ecological solid waste management program and establish a sanitary landfill disposal facility.

Community Environment and Natural Resources Officer (CENRO 2) Mario Aragon said that as of this time, only three LGUs here have put up a sanitary landfill disposal facility, namely: Bayawan City, Bais City and the municipality of San Jose while the towns of Sta. Catalina, Bindoy and Ayungon already had their proposed sanitary landfill facility sites approved and will soon put up their own facilities.

“There are so far only a few qualified sites for sanitary landfill here in the province. But our target is to make all LGUs have a sanitary landfill and comply with the law,” said Aragon.

DENR's Environment and Management Bureau assistant director Gilbert Gonzales earlier reported that 360 out of 1,634 LGUs nationwide have failed to adopt the Ecological Solid Waste Management program under RA 9003 despite urgings from the national goverment to do so.

The erring LGUs were the subject of a three-strike policy issued by the National Solid Waste Management Commission (NSWMC), which started implementing the policy in 2008 in order to discipline LGUs that were already issued two notices for continued violation of said law.

LGUs who remain non-compliant after the three-strike policy are at risk of facing a P500,000 fine for every violation it commits under RA 9003.

Aragon, who also heads the EMB in the province, assured the non-complying LGUs here that the bureau will continue to provide technical assistance to them in the identification and assessment for suitability of their proposed sanitary landfill facility site. “We will not abandon you. We will continue to help you,” he sad.

The local EMB chief is hopeful that before the year ends, all LGUs here will already have their sanitary landfill facility established.

Gonzales, in a press conference held Jan. 13 at the Philippine Information Agency conference room in Quezon City, cited financial constraints and different priorities as top reasons why LGUs fail to implement the provisions of RA 9003.

“LGUs tend to prioritize infastructure more than environment programs,” he said. (RMN-PIA 7 Negros Oriental)

Pro-poor program expands to 7 areas
January 17, 2011, 5:11pm

DUMAGUETE CITY, Negros Oriental, Philippines (PIA) – Seven more towns in the province of Negros Oriental will benefit from the government’s pro-poor program after the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) here expanded the reach of its Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program or 4Ps to include more Negrense beneficiaries.

The municipalities of Maninay, Manjuyod, Pamplona, Zamboanguita, and the cities of Bais and Canlaon with a total of 25,863 beneficiaries are now covered by the said program.

This brings to 57,911 the total household beneficiaries in the province under 4Ps, said DSWD Region 7 Director Evelyn Macapobre.

In line with this, Macapobre said a ceremonial Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) signing will take place on January 18 at the Plaza Ma. Luisa Suites Inn in this city.

Expected to attend are Gov. Roel Degamo, 1st Rep. Jocelyn Limkaichong, 2nd District Rep. George Arnaiz, and 3rd District Rep. Pryde Henry Teves together with the mayors of the new 4Ps areas.

4Ps is the government’s poverty alleviation program implemented through the DSWD that gives monthly conditional cash grants to qualified household beneficiaries.

Each household is given P500 a month for health, and P300 per month for every qualified child for a maximum of three children per household aged 14 years old and below.

However, DSWD 7 information officer Aileen Lariba said that for these households to receive said cash grant, they have to comply with a set of conditions, namely: pregnant mothers should get pre-natal and post-natal care and must be attended by a qualified health professional during childbirth; zero to five-year-old children must be immunized and given preventive health check-ups; children aged three to 14 years old must attend classes at least 85 percent of the time whether it’s day-care, pre-school, elementary or high school; and mothers must attend community assemblies, motherhood classes, family planning; and children must be given de-worming pills at least twice a year.

The program was crafted with the basic goal of meeting the government’s objective to reach out to 2.3 million poor families across the nation in 2011.

The conditions for the cash grants were set to also help fulfill the country’s commitment to meeting the Millennium Development Goals, namely: eradicate extreme poverty and hunger; achieve universal primary education; reduce child mortality; improve maternal health; and promote gender equality.

Neg.Or. Disaster Council advises LGUs to monitor flood prone barangays
By: Jennifer Catan-Tilos

DUMAGUETE CITY, Jan. 17 (PIA) -- Newly appointed deputy officer for Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (PDRRMC) Angelo Tiongson has called on local government units to take appropriate precautionary measures as rains continue due to the northeast monsoon and the tail-end of a cold front affecting the province.

Tiongson said that in coordination with the local Civil Defense Office an advisory has been issued for the LGUs to assist the barangay in monitoring rivers and its identified risk and vulnerable areas for possible flashfloods and landslides.

The council urged the Barangay Disaster Risk Reduction Management Committee (BDRRMC) to be functional by installing warning signs along the riverbanks prohibiting residences from crossing the river when imminent danger is seen.

Civil Defense Officer Allen Cabaron also advised residents not to venture out into the sea due to big waves generated by strong to gale force northeasterly winds.

Those living in the mountainous and land slide prone areas were also being requested to evacuate to spare their lives from the possible threat of mud avalanche, OCD official said.

The following watercourses identified to be likely affected in Negros Oriental are Tanjay; Candugay, Siaton; Cauitan and Sicopong in Sta. Catalina, and Pagatban and Tyaban Rivers in Bayawan City.

Tiongson advised the people living near said rivers as well as along mountain slopes and in low-lying areas to be on the alert for possible flashfloods.

Capitol official also reiterated the concerned MDRRMC's to implement preemptive evacuation to all at risk populations if the situation calls for it.

This after the National Risk Reduction and Management Council issued the weather advisory that brings scattered rain showers and isolated thunderstorms over the northern and central Luzon. The eastern section of southern Luzon and the whole of Visayas becoming widespread rains over the provinces of Quezon, Camarines provinces, Catanduanes, Albay, Sorsogon, Samar and Leyte Provinces.

Gokongwei firms post higher profits

GOKONGWEI FIRMS Universal Robina Corp. and Robinsons Land Corp. posted hefty profit gains in the fiscal year that ended in September.
Robust commercial operations and investment gains drove earnings higher last year, the companies said in separate financial reports.

“Universal Robina’s net income for fiscal year 2010 amounted to P8.138 billion, higher by P4.03 billion from P4.108 billion [in the previous year], due to higher operating income,” the beverage and snack company said.

It also attributed growth to a “mark-to-market gain in bond and equity holdings as a result of recovery of market prices and net refinance revenue position.”

“Net income attributable to equity holders of the parent increased by P3.93 billion or 101.1% to P7.817 billion in fiscal year 2010,” Universal Robina said.

Consolidated sale of goods and services jumped by 14.4% to P57.72 billion. Universal Robina is into four business categories: branded consumer foods, packaging, agro-industrial, and commodities. Only the packaging division posted losses, at P161 million last year, bigger than the P125-million operating loss in the previous year.

The firm’s operating expenses climbed by 7.2% to P8.928 billion given higher advertising and freight and delivery costs. This resulted in a consolidated operating income of P7.678 billion, up by 65.1% from P4.651 billion in fiscal year 2009.

Universal Robina’s financial investments gained 185.9% in market value to reach P2.007 billion “due to the recovery in market values of bonds and equity securities investments.”

Foreign exchange losses, however, rose to P335 million from P46 million in fiscal year 2009.

Shares in Universal Robina, owner of brands like Jack n’ Jill, C2, Chippy, Chiz Curls, Magic Flakes and Hunt’s, closed P0.30 higher at P36.80 each yesterday.

Meanwhile, property giant Robinsons Land posted double-digit earnings growth.

“Net profit for the fiscal year 2010 amounted to P3.59 billion, up by 10% compared to the fiscal year 2009. Robinsons Land’s net income would have been higher at 13% if the P103-million gain from an interest rate swap transaction last year was excluded,” the company said in its financial report.

Robinsons Land, which is said to be interested in the state-owned Food Terminals, Inc. in Taguig, is into commercial centers, residential and office buildings, and hotels.

“The Commercial Centers Division accounted for P5.74 billion of the real estate revenues for the year versus P4.21 billion [in 2009],” the property firm said.

Higher revenues were due to new rental space from newly opened malls like Robinsons Place General Santos, Robinsons Ilocos Norte, Robinsons Place Dumaguete, and Cybergate Cebu.

The office building division posted a 6% increase in revenues at P1.18 billion due mainly to new office space at Robinsons Cybergate Tower 3 and the completion of Cybergate Plaza in Mandaluyong.

The residential division cut its gross revenues by 26% to P3.22 billion “due to lower construction completion,” Robinsons Land said.

Hotel revenues went up by 11% to P1.15 billion “due to the opening of Summit Ridge Hotel in Tagaytay and Go Hotel in Mandaluyong City.”

Robinsons Land said capital expenditures in the last fiscal year reached P6.5 billion, which was obtained from long-term borrowings and internal funds.

Shares in the property developer went down by P0.02 to close at P14.78 each yesterday. -- Neil Jerome C. Morales

Degamo seeks Capitol unity
Jan 16, 2011

by: DEMS REY DEMECILLO

Newly-assumed Governor Roel Degamo is seeking unity and cooperation among all government officials and personnel, as the entire provincial government moves on to the task of governing over a million inhabitants of Negros Oriental, following the death of Gov. Agustin “Tuting” Perdices, 76, last January 5 due to gastric cancer.

In a series of top level to staff meetings, Gov. Degamo, 44, said that he intends to continue the programs of Gov. Perdices even as he said, he will reserve the right to make significant innovations for the better.

Degamo will move up on Monday, from the ground floor of the legislative building office of the Vice-governor, to the second floor of the century-old capitol building where the governor’s office is lodged.

Generally he said, he will continue the programs of his three predecessors who vacated the capitol top seat in rapid succession, that is within six months after election. The three are Gov. Emilio Macias II, who died on June 13 of liver complications; Gov. Jose “Petit” Baldado, who was governor for 17 days when his term expired last June 30; and Gov. Perdices. who died last January 5 from stomach cancer.

As a professed Christian, Gov. Degamo who regularly holds Bible studies in his office on Thursdays, said he does not entertain superstitions about certain alleged evil curse at the governor’s office. Three board members also passed away in the same year namely Apolinario Arnaiz, Melimore Saycon and Rudy Martinez. The spouses of BM Bubot Adanza, and BM Saleto Erames also passed away late in 2010.

Dumaguete City: How Quaint Can You Be?

“This is it?” I asked myself when I saw the “mall” a local was referring to when I had the opportunity to stroll around the downtown area. He (the local) was talking about Lee Super Plaza, which was the bigger department store then.

Dumaguete City. It was in 1999 when I first stepped foot on the City of Gentle People and I was already dismayed with the limited recreational activities that were available – back then, ‘recreation’ meant going to the malls. Little did I know that I’d spend the remaining years of my secondary education here; a moment that I wish was longer as I grew to love the place.

http://soloflighted.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/dumaguete-city_thumb.jpg
Dumaguete City

Coming from the city wherein the environment is always busy, Dumaguete stunned me with its laid-back atmosphere. I'd wake up thinking that I was already late for school, only to find out that no one was still around inside the campus.

http://soloflighted.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/silliman-university_thumb.jpg
Silliman amphitheater – my favorite spot in Silliman University

I’ve lived for almost 4 years in the capital city of Negros Oriental; a time when I had to undergo adolescence which wasn’t a grueling stage in my case. It helped that the environment didn’t put me in a lot of pressure just to fit in. This is the best place to grow up. There's still a touch of modern life, but it's not as busy as other neighboring regions.

Rugged Lifestyle
In Dumaguete, people wear shorts and slippers even in malls; everybody is a cowboy in their own right. It doesn’t matter if you drive the latest car as there’s very limited space to show off your vehicle. Besides, you'd get more stares from people not because of how cool your wheels are, but why you had to bring it to this town. People will gawk as if it's an alien space ship. It doesn't matter as well if your wear the best shoes as your footwear will just gather dust due to the surroundings. These are just some of the ways that describe how 'rugged' this town is.

Downtown Area

Motorcycle Transport
The motorcycle is the popular mode of transportation. People usually gear up their vehicles to pimp their rides but here it’s the exact opposite. Dumagueteños take away even the important parts of the bike. The more skeletal, the better.

http://soloflighted.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/motor-dumaguete_thumb.jpghttp://soloflighted.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/motorcycle-dumaguete_thumb.jpg
motorbikes: no helmet? no problem.

Motorcycles for rent are abound. So long as you have a license, you can rent a bike for the day. The reason why this has become the choice of transportation is attributed to the fact that everything is within reach. Everything is within walking distance.

University Town
Dumaguete is considered a university town as most of the population consist of students of different schools. These students come from various regions in Visayas and Mindanao and there are even a lot who come from other countries mainly due to Silliman University. Being an American institution, students flock and rent dormitory rooms and lodging houses to experience how it is to study in the first American private university in Asia.

http://soloflighted.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/dumaguete_thumb.jpg
Hibbard Avenue

You can just go out after class and play a round of Frisbee, tennis, softball, whatever sport you’d find interesting; for sure you can find a schoolmate with the same interest. You can also just go out in some local hotspot and just chill over bottles of beer while staring at the beach and talk to your friends.

Writer's Haven

http://soloflighted.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/dumaguete-picture_thumb.jpg
reflecting

There's something about Dumaguete that entices one to become poetic. Blame it on the peaceful atmosphere. This is, after all, where the National Writer’s Workshop is being held during summer. Those creative juices just keep flowing especially when you're detached from the city life. If one could fall in love with a city - Dumaguete would be the place to be. You'll truly find inspiration in these simple pleasures in life because the ambiance gives you time to REFLECT.

Food
Food is definitely cheaper here; and the choices have actually grown too.

http://soloflighted.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/boston-cafe-dumaguete_thumb.jpg
Dumaguete Boston Café pizza and pasta

Taste the famous sans rival cake, check out meals and the dining experience at Gabby’s Bistro. Bring your laptop and hang out at Café Noriter. Eat pasta at Boston Café, or take a bite at Café Memento’s Chimichangas. Buy Oatikin cookies at Tsokolat and ultimately have dinner and drinks in Hayahay restaurant – the best place to eat in Dumaguete while listening to live reggae music.

http://soloflighted.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/cafe-memento_thumb.jpg
Mexican Chimichanga at Café Memento

Nature Trip
Go on a trekking adventure to the Japanese Shrine and Casaroro Falls, hop on a boat and head to Apo Island which is a famous diving center. Take a dip at the Twin Lakes of Balinsasayao or head to Bais City and check out the sandbar while you relax under the sun. These are really just some attractions that you can enjoy. It's also near islands such as Cebu and Siquijor so you can hop on a boat going to those provinces for another set of adventures.

http://soloflighted.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/japanese-shrine-dumaguete_thumb.jpghttp://soloflighted.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/casaroro-falls_thumb.jpghttp://soloflighted.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/apo-island-rock_thumb.jpg
Japanese Shrine, Casaroro Falls and Apo Island

But the adventures that I enjoyed the most during my stay in Dumaguete were spontaneous trips that my classmates and I decided while going to their houses located near the mountains. Those were inexpensive but good times.

http://soloflighted.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/dumaguete1.jpg
trekking, an inexpensive activity

There are still a lot more things you can do in Dumaguete; the degree of fun depends on the people you hang out with as it's up to you to improvise.

Rizal Boulevard

http://soloflighted.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/boulevard-in-dumaguete_thumb.jpg
Rizal Boulevard at night

The Rizal Boulevard has been a famous landmark for people of all ages. It isn't extravagant, but it's with the simplicity of having different lights from various establishments and lamp posts illuminating the black landscape that makes the location a great place to hang out. Couple it with the cool breeze and great company, not to mention cheap food, you can't help but just ponder on life and life again.

http://soloflighted.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/dumaguete-tempura_thumb.jpg
tempura stands

I recommend you try the fried tempura being sold there. It’s definitely a worthy treat.
TRIVIA: My blog’s header picture was taken in this part of the city.
------------------------------

A lot has changed since I last visited this quaint little town. How ironic that I never really got to get around it when I was living here as opposed to when I visited the place after my high school graduation. Bistros are put up, there's now a Robinsons mall and BPO companies are established.

http://soloflighted.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/dumaguete-people_thumb.jpghttp://soloflighted.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/bell-tower_thumb.jpg
belltower

Whenever I drop by, there's still a special connection that I feel because of memories that were created. Only, the faces I see are not the ones of people that are familiar to me. I realize that the time has been allocated for another generation. A new one ready to experience the highs and lows of living in this bubble until life will beckon them to pass the torch to a much younger era.

http://soloflighted.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/dumaguete-boulevard_thumb.jpg
Boulevard in the morning

Dumaguete, every time I hear your name, I recall acacia leaves falling carelessly along the pathways of Silliman. You are a total walk in the park. If you were a season, you'd be autumn. One can't help but burst into a poem as the city lets you go with a rhyme.

Be careful not to get caught up with it -- else you want to fall in love and get hurt when you part ways.

http://soloflighted.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/rizal-boulevard-dumaguete_thumb.jpg
staring at the sun

Dumaguete grows on you. Don’t just spend a day or two as for sure you’ll get bored right away. Don't even expect what this city can offer you as something will surely come up out of the blue. What you may ought to do is immerse yourself with its lifestyle and let nature take its course. If you're a person who's always on the go, Dumaguete will make you STOP.

http://soloflighted.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/hayahay-dumaguete.jpg
Hayahay or 'comfortable/cozy/refreshing' - if I were to describe the town in one word.

When you have nothing, you make do with what you have. - this is what I've learned from staying here.

Super Girl goes snorkeling in APO ISLAND (http://roniflores.blogspot.com/2010/12/super-girl-goes-snorkeling-in-apo.html)

With Dumaguete City as our home base, we were able to visit tourist spots within a radius of few kilometers. On our first day in Dumaguete, right after dumping our bags at our hotel, we were fetched by our tour guide and we drove a little less than an hour to Zamboanguita pier. We then took a 20-minute boat ride to Apo Island. :) Here are some snapshots of our adventure:

http://img577.imageshack.us/img577/1071/22006095.jpg

This is what you will primarily do on Apo Island: snorkel at the Marine Sanctuary. We had to wear vests so we would remain afloat - this is to protect coral reefs that are already abundant at the depth of only 2 to 3 feet. You can hundreds (yes, hundreds) of fishes here. :) You will see clownfishes, sea snakes, turtles, and all the saltwater fishes you can think of (well, not all. Fine.)

http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/2904/71200943.jpg

Be extra careful because the waves around Apo are quite strong. I got wounded though by corals. Hehe! I only felt the sting of the wound when we got out of the water.

Wounded but happy! Haha! :D

This is the other side of the island, our view while having our lunch.

http://img255.imageshack.us/img255/7371/d28w.jpg

You will see lots of interesting things while walking around the island - like these mangroves. :)

...and a sleepy cat. :)

We plan to go back to Apo Island. There are lots of cheap flights to Dumaguete - next time we shall have more time swimming with the turtles.

Super Girl Loves to Eat in DUMAGUETE! (http://roniflores.blogspot.com/2010/12/super-girl-loves-to-eat-in-dumaguete.html)

Here are (foodie) reasons why I will definitely visit Dumaguete again:

http://img233.imageshack.us/img233/2631/66386964.jpg

Highway 10's Full Tank Meal

This was our very first dinner in Dumaguete and it was very satisfying! Highway 10 is like the Jollibee of Dumaguete. They have a wide variety of meals to choose from. The Full Tank Meal is served with Chicken, Pancit, Rice and Pepsi product of your choice. We were very busog afterwards :D

http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/9503/36093349.jpg

Jo's Chicken Inato

It definitely tastes different from Chicken Inasal! We ate at Jo's about three times because we really loved the Chicken Inato and the bottomless rice, hehe. You can also eat with your hands, we even saw foreigners eating with their hands and enjoying the "kamayan" feel of the restaurant. The patis with siling labuyo (fish sauce with chili) definitely complements the taste of the chicken. Okay my mouth is watering now.

http://img198.imageshack.us/img198/4928/d10u.jpg

Highway 10's Jungle Juice

You know the level of sourness that runs through your jaw right? This specialty juice of Highway 10 has that kick. It is a shake made from calamansi (our local version of lemons, hehe), celeries, cucumbers, and I don't know what else, but it is very good! Even kids will enjoying drinking their vegetables with this!

http://img810.imageshack.us/img810/5613/d11z.jpg

Bejar's Pancit

Perhaps one of the tastiest pancit in the country, Bejar's pancit has a very rich sauce with an abundant mix of liver, seafood, veggies and yummy noodles. This is my favorite next to Pancit Malabon.

http://img404.imageshack.us/img404/8674/d12f.jpg

Sans Rival Cafe

Tasty, tasty, tasty desserts. 'Nuff said.

http://img69.imageshack.us/img69/5302/d13r.jpg

Panda Haus' Fried Ice Cream

Finally! I got to taste Dumaguete's local fried ice cream. It is hot and crunchy on the outside, and soft and cold on the inside. I love it! I heard they have it in Manila. Can someone tell me where?

Super Girl goes DOLPHIN WATCHING IN BAIS (http://roniflores.blogspot.com/2010/12/super-girl-goes-dolphin-watching-in.html)

Like I mentioned in my last entry, we went dolphin watching in Bais. :) As unstable as the weather can be these days, we didn't wake up that morning with too much hope: it was pouring the night before, and the sky was gloomy when we were on our way to Bais. Boarding the boat, we can see the horizon filled with dark clouds. It was raining.

Our boat started running through the waves (thank God they weren't that strong), and just like the Hallelujah chorus being painted on a canvass, we saw the clouds part, the sun breaking through and the sea becoming calm.

We rode around for about 30 minutes and we spotted our first two dolphins! They were about 30 meters from our boat. It was like a chase, we go near the area where we spotted them and they appear exactly the other side, from where our boat came. We were like that for an hour, spotting two, or three dolphins from time to time.

But we had a patient and diligent guide! We were with another boat that day, but they decided to go back. Our driver, guide and his aliporeses did not! :) So we rode to the far ends of the sea, we almost reached Cebu...and what a sight! It was like landing right on top of the dolphins' nest! There were 20, 30 or even 40 of them, and they began swimming with our boat. They were jumping, circling, lining up... all the formations you can think of. Such intelligent creatures!

Pictures can only capture so much, but you have to experience this yourself. :)

Super Girl loves the MANJUYOD SAND BAR (http://roniflores.blogspot.com/2010/12/super-girl-loves-manjuyod-sand-bar.html)

Just last month, I was in Dumaguete (Negros Oriental) with my carissimo. It is a province in Visayas, the major island of central Philippines. It sits just beside Cebu, in fact, you can view Cebu from several points of Negros.

On the third day of our tour, we went dolphin watching! (More on this in another post) Going to and from the dolphin watching point, we passed by a sand bar called the Manjuyod sand bar, since it is under the jurisdiction of the town of Manjuyod - the dolphin watching's jump off point is at Bais.

http://img43.imageshack.us/img43/3720/d31r.jpg

After hours of playing with dolphins, before we went back to our hotel in Dumaguete city, we stopped by the sand bar to relax and have our lunch. The water was very clear, the sand white, and the sun...very hot. Hehe! Bais and Manjuyod are only an hour away from Dumaguete, so when you get the chance please don't miss dolphin watching and relaxing at the sand bar.

DUMAGUETE CITY AND COUNTRYSIDE HIGHLIGHTS (http://roniflores.blogspot.com/2011/01/dumaguete-city-and-countryside.html)

On our last day in Dumaguete, we had a quick city and countryside tour in the morning before catching our flight to Manila. Our tour guide, Kuya Bong, was very kind and entertaining! Days before though, we were able to go around the city on our own, since it wasn't that big.

Here are the highlights of our tour with Kuya Bong, and some photos from our own walk around the city:

The Christmas house of Dr. Rico Absin. Every year he holds parties and gives gifts to less fortunate kids. :) Dr. Absin also makes sure that his Christmas house annually has a different theme.

Degamo seeks Capitol unity (http://www.negroschronicle.com/?p=11944)

BOSS boosts Dumaguete’s economy
Jan 18, 2011

In order to spur the city’s economic growth by attracting more investors, the City Government of launched the Business One Stop Shop (BOSS), with an aim to make the process of securing and renewing business permits systematic, easy, and organized.

City Administrator and BOSS Manager William Ablong explained that to encourage more entrepreneurs from putting up business establishments, the city government has decided to launch BOSS. BOSS, located in the second floor of the new City Health building, allows potential businessmen to secure all the necessary business permits in just one room and within a short period of time, thus allowing them to put up business institutions with less effort, money, and time.

According to Ablong, BOSS aims to stop red tape, minimize the possibility of graft and corruption, and promote a business-friendly environment. He also said that BOSS has paved the way for the coming in of more business establishments in the city since its establishments last October, 2010.

There are 400 new businesses that applied for registration last year bringing the number to 3, 600 overall business firms in Dumaguete as of the present. This tremendous increase in the number of business institutions has helped in pushing the city’s economic development and in providing jobs for the unemployed.

“Other agencies of the government involved in securing business permits had assigned a representative in the BOSS center to fast track the pertinent papers needed to secure a business permit,” he said.

“The city government has to give incentives to business institutions as a way of thanking and paying them back for investing in the city such as exemption from paying local taxes,” he added.

With the growing economy of the city, the local government of Dumaguete has increased its annual budget from P 400 million last year to P 450 million this year where 70 percent of the budget comes from its local tax collection and 30 percent from the Internal Revenue Allotment of the national government, Ablong added.

BOSS is a joint project of the City Government of Dumaguete, Department of Trade and Industry-Negros Oriental, BIR, Negros Oriental Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and other government agencies involved in securing business permits.

Hello!

It is a common knowledge to the very beautiful scenic boulevard extension at Piapi Beach where one can see Cebu Island, Sumilon, in good western Bohol, Apo Island and northern part of Mindanao. We, from Dumaguete City do not appreciate this natural and environmentalfriendly area where you can walk and breath fresh air up to Barangay Bantayan area.

Let us all do our part by making this area clean and people-friendly by removing all the waste and to name them, used furnitures, firewood, styropors, driftwood, forsale flower plants, etc. etc.

Please we hope you will now open your eyes and appreciate the natural beauty which Dumaguete City only have and no other city except Manila. More important, remove that two makeshift shed for “tambays” which scare the walkers in the early morning or late afternoon.

Please let us save Dumaguete and appreciate, value and treasure what we have. (From Concerned citizen)

DTI-6 grants bamboo equipments to Buglas Bamboo Institute
By Jennifer Catan-Tilos

DUMAGUETE CITY, Jan 18 (PIA) – The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) turned over some P146,000 worth of machinery and tools to Buglas Bamboo Institute (BBI) in Maayong-tubig, Dauin yesterday.

DTI Provincial Director Javier Fortunato said as part of its Bamboo Development Program, DTI provides the machinery which includes rip saw, drill press, side press, electric sander and some power tools.

Last November and December, BBI also received skill trainings on Safety in the Workplace, Basic Woodworking and Carpentry, and Jig Making, Fortunato said.

One of the components of DTI’s program also supplies the Department of Education with bamboo desks, chairs and teachers tables so the grant will boost the capability of Buglas Bamboo to supply schools especially here in Negros Oriental using engineered bamboo.

DTI’s current focus in the bamboo industry is on “engineered bamboo” or the process of forming parts of the tall grass into ornaments, containers, or house fixtures for local and international sale.

Negros Oriental has a bigger bamboo production that can supply in the province and the lines can be found in Dauin, Valencia, Siaton and Ayungon.

The Buglas Bamboo Institute has been catering to national and international markets for their unique designs in furniture, bamboo floor tiles and other crafts.

After the turnover, a signing of Memorandum of Agreement among DTI 7 Regional Director Asteria Caberte; Dr. Emigdio Omictin representing the DepEd City Schools Division Office and BBI director Frans Koerkamp. (PIA/JCT)

State College, Universities lament budget cuts
Jan 18, 2011

Negros Oriental State University (NORSU) President Henry A. Sojor disclosed that State Universities and Colleges (SUC) in Central Visayas, including NORSU were greatly affected by the multi-million peso budget cuts of the already approved 2011 national budget.

Sojor said that NORSU’s Maintenance and Other Operating Expenses (MOEE) this year was slashed by at least P 7 million compared to last year’s MOEE while leaving a zero budget for capital outlay.

Sojor made the statements during a conference with four other SUC presidents in Central Visayas namely, Dr. Baldomero Martinez of Siquijor State College; Dr. Bonifacio Villanueva of Cebu Technological University; Elpedio Magante Jr of Bohol Island State University and Dr. Marlon Lopez of Cebu Normal University.

The five SUC presidents in Central Visayas have met in Dumaguete this week to tackle issues concerning higher and basic educations, including the budget cuts as well as the incoming State universities and Colleges Athletic Association and National Olympics of the Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges (PASUC).

According to Sojor, the SUCs’ presidents are planning to present their opposition over the budget cut for SUCs before the two houses of Congress — House of Representatives and Senate.

The NORSU president, who heads the PASUC in Central Visayas, dismissed the claim of the government that there was no budget cut for SUCs, as the budget for SUCs appear to be higher this year based on the Department of Budget Management (DBM).

He admitted that the budget for SUCs this year is higher compared to the previous years because of the mandatory 10 percent increase in the salary of fulltime teachers and personnel as allowed by the Salary Standardization Law.

But he said that NORSU and other SUCs were not allocated with Capital Outlay, budget for new facilities and construction of new buildings, while the fund for MOEE was slashed.

He also planned to conduct Income Generating Projects (IGP) for NORSU as these are allowed by the law. Some of the IGPs that Sojor planned are the selling of the harvests in the Pamplona Farm of NORSU-Pamplona Campus, leasing of the NORSU mini-hotel rooms, and other sources of funds. Sojor said that he will not initiate protests over the budget cut as what other SUCs have done already by reiterating his principle in leadership and management: “Doing more (developments), with less (resources).” (By Ramie L. Bulaybulay Jr.)

^^ Btw, part of Cafe Antonio's Al fresco area is now fully air conditioned.. So technically, its not part of the al fresco anymore..:D

it's a good thing they did.. finally, patrons can choose where to stay.. al fresco for the nights, and inside during hot days.. because it does get really hot and humid there at noon and in the afternoon

by the way guys, who's going to Bacolod for the Azkals game versus Mongolia? kitakits lang ta sa Panaad

Just outside and in the periphery...I actually had the chance to get inside last month (for an interisland travel :)) but backed out due to work pressure... I have seen that it is quite nice inside, with provisions for kiosks or counters for fastfood and tickets...BTW, the open space on the second level I guess is for coffee and food alfresco...

Hi kids :)

The building fronting GSIS is under renovation. I think I saw construction materials at the lot beside Qyosko Bar. A new apartment is being built across ABC's annex bldg. And the lot to the left of Royal Suites Inn has been cleared. I hope somebody can check out those sites. Something good might rise in them :).

Inside Silliman U. there are plenty of constructions left and right. A large new building will soon rise in front of the under construction Barry Thompson Nursing building, which I suppose belongs to the College of Performing Arts.

Cops to identify sites for tourist police training
BY JUDY F .PARTLOW
Wednesday, January 19, 2011

The Negros Oriental Philippine National Police Office will publish a list of tourist destinations in the towns and cities of the province in preparation for the training of tourist police personnel.

Police chiefs should coordinate with government officials in their areas to identify the tourist destinations that will be a basis for prioritizing those to be assigned tourist police.

Earlier, Sr. Supt. Samuel Yordan, regional PNP deputy director of Region 7, said that the PNP hierarchy in Camp Crame, Quezon City will begin training tourist police for Negros Oriental and Bohol next month.

Yordan was in Negros Oriental last week as guest of honor at the opening of the seven-day Back-to-Basics training for police personnel in Dauin town.

He said the PNP national headquarters, in cooperation with the Department of Tourism, will train more tourist police to help efforts to bring more tourists to the country.

Dumaguete City is the first in Negros Oriental to have a tourist police unit.

Yordan said there shall be no vacuum when personnel are trained and assigned to tourist police units, as the PNP in Region 7 is ready to download more policemen, especially those holding the rank of Police Officer 1, to police stations in the provinces.*JFP

TGEG Gets Ready for Unveiling of Green Energy Power Plant
Written by Editor on 18 January 2011

Michael Gilburd, President of ValuCorp, who Prior to ValuCorp, was the Managing Director of corporate finance for two American Express companies, where he assisted in raising funds for various transactions, including acquisitions and public offerings, and previously, he was the National Director of Corporate Finance for BDO Seidman, one of the nation’s largest accounting and consulting firms, and a member of their International Corporate Finance Committee. TGEG chose ValuCorp because of their impeccable track record, backgrounds and experience.

ValuCorp Calculation of Fair Market Value for TGEG was expresses as a single dollar amount of $5,235,215,734 and was based upon all the information provided by True Green Energy Group and Spectrum Blue Steel Corporation as well as other sources of information by Voga Brazil that ValuCorp deemed to be an appropriate analysis. The revenue was based on the current sites in the Philippines such as San Fernando, Santa Rosa, Naga, Dumaguete, Tanjay, and Bayawan City. In addition to cities in Brazil such as Goiania, Goias, Cristalina Goias, Rio de Janeiro, Palmas and Tocantins.

TGEG/SBS will be using the Biosphere MKV5 and Material Recycling Facility to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions through Land Management contracts over the next 25 years. Provinces, local governments, and stakeholders of TGEG/SBS will earn big money because of the significant reduction in GHG emissions from the green energy system. Today the price of a carbon credits are approximately $20 dollars per ton.

True Green Energy Group and Spectrum Blue Steel’s strategy is to “de-carbonize” the electric power generation industry by shifting to non-fossil fuel-based energy sources, specifically energy-from-waste. This follows the American Energy Policy Act of 2005 which confirmed energy-from-waste is renewable, and the Philippine Renewable Energy Law (RA 9513) of the Philippines. Spectrum is a domestic corporation duly registered under the laws of the Philippines and holds a license to the Biosphere Technology from Global Environmental Energy Corporation (OTC Bulletin Board: GEECF). Global is a fully integrated energy company whose interests include electrical power generation, oil and gas exploration and production, clean coal and waste management technologies.

This press release contains forward-looking information within the meaning of Section 27A of the Securities Act of the 1933 and Section 21E of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934, and is subject to the safe harbor created by those sections.

Food tripping in Dumaguete

by Lito Cinco

The people of Dumaguete appreciate good food but are looking for value for money and that is why food tripping in this laid back city in Negros Oriental is an easy thing to do, as we found out during an extended stay there for the coverage of the 15th University Games, a nationwide collegiate sports competition with schools from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao as participants.

The timing was perfect, too, as the annual Buglasan Festival of Negors Oriental was ongoing with weekend street parties at the famous Rizal Boulevard, complete with a fireworks display that lighted up the night skies.

And when there are street parties, it follows that al fresco food and drinks stalls will mushroom along the famed boulevard named after the country’s national hero who once stayed for a short time in this city.

The stalls mostly sold grilled items like skewered pork, chicken, chorizo, fish and squid. They even had their own version of tempura.

Camalig offers an eat-all-you-can buffet of grilled chicken and pork belly with rice and desert for only P150. Now, that’s a bargain.

Waway, a restaurant specializing in seafood, was a bit pricey by Dumaguete standards but still cheap as six of us had a dinner there consisting of chicken barbeque, blue marlin and bistek with rice, drinks and dessert and our bill was just over P600!

Highway 10 near the church is a fast food restaurant with a lot of combo food items and I tried the meal of a fried chicken, pancit, unlimited rice and soda for only P100.

For a cheap and good breakfast, nothing beats a trip to the Dumaguete public market, the cleanest market I have seen here in the country, for early morning feasts of budbod or kabog. This is the native suman enjoyed with a cup of the local hot chocolate. You can also opt for puso (rice wrapped in leaves) or a giant pan de sal with fried egg, hot dog, luncheon meat or pancit.

If you’re looking for fine dining, go to the Bethel Guest House where a weekend lunch or dinner buffet is only P175 per person or go a la carte at St. Theresa along Hibbard Avenue where a blue or white marlin and chicken dinner complete with rice and premium beer for two will only cost around P120 per person.

Coco Grande Hotel near Silliman University has a coffee shop where this writer had a lunch of crepe with chicken filet and mushroom inside plus salad on the side for about P150.

We had dinner at Don Atilano at the Residencia Hotel courtesy of Philippine Sports Commission Commissioner Chito Loyzaga where we enjoyed sinigang na hipon, adobong kangkong, crispy calamares, bangus ala pobre, green mango salad with drinks and brewed coffee for three people for an amount that did not exceed P600.

Another classy dining place is Mamias, which is owned by the family of Mayor Chiquiting Sagarbarria who we met as Loyzaga tendered a lunch for local and UniGames officials. The place offers international cuisine and we had a real feast of seafood and meat and specialty dishes like callos and lengua.

Is it true that this building will house a giant fastfood chain?...Hmmm, from what I know about this building am quite excited, super excited in fact...And take note, this is not 8 levels only, it's 9 levels plus penthouse (making it 10 storeys)....

Wow.. This will definitely be a surprise for all of us... But between a hotel and a BPO building (rumors), i would rather want this building to be occupied by a BPO company..:)

How about putting KFC 2 in the old Cang's building? Very, very strategic for another big resto chain...... Or maybe the Teves' have bigger and better plans for that building...:)

It seems its an expansion of their present store...Not sure, though. They must be doing well.

For me it's okay as it caters to a different market, whereas the malls (Robs, Lees, the upcoming SM, even Cang's) are catering to another market. And these are bigger compared to this Unitop...

We should encourage the city council to enforce the 'International Standards' law. That way, not only will the new unitop not open; but the original one would close. Why? Because not one thing they sell would pass the International standards law. Not only do I not want to see the new one not open, I would like to see the original one close. Poor people usually use it, because the prices are low; but they don't realize that in a couple of weeks, whatever they buy will no longer work.

We bought a soldering iron from there, as soon as it got hot, it blew up because the solder connecting the iron to the mains melted. We bought joysticks for games for a console, and within 10 minutes they were both broken. Pagkaugma, we replaced them, and again, 10 minutes after they too were broken. When we went to replace them the third time they said we could no longer replace them after this. Lo and behold, after 10 minutes of use, they too were both broken. So, instead of saving money because they were cheap, we actually wasted money.

Talent crunch still biggest risk to robust BPO growth
By Dennis D. Estopace, Business Mirror
Posted at 01/19/2011 11:40 PM | Updated as of 01/19/2011 11:40 PM

MANILA, Philippines - Business process outsourcing (BPO) companies must address the annual loss of an estimated 84,800 workers from resignations or face a massive shortage of workers 5 years from now.

“We need to do that, or the industry will be short of 400,000 workers by 2016,” Maulik Parekh, president of BPO firm SPI Global Solutions Corp., said at a public forum on Jan. 19 morning in Makati City.

Business Processing Association of the Philippines chairman Alfredo Ayala said in a briefing last year that it would take zero investment on the part of the government “to attain the lower end of the target” $25-billion revenue by 2016.

But on Wednesday Parekh said with the exodus of 16% of the workers annually, that would bring the revenue to $18 billion. “That is not acceptable.”

Hence, Parekh said companies need to take 3 steps to address the situation:

* creating value for clients instead of cutting costs
* focusing on people in the company
* and fostering entrepreneurship

He said the shift by developed countries’ client companies from cost-cutting strategies happened even before the 2008 financial crisis and has been a predominant phenomenon for 3 years now. “The crisis probably accelerated that [shift].”

Still, Parekh said clients of BPOs may have also influenced the strategy to create value. “It’s a theme driven by clients, making it a net-net goal, which is to create more value with less cost by leveraging relationships.”

An example that Parekh cited is the move by a client company to move some work on medical transcription in the United States to the Philippines by putting up a health-care academy to prepare Filipino employees for high-value work.

The company also plans to put up a team focusing on transcription of highly technical materials, like those produced by scientists. “We have launched this in India and we plan to launch it here,” and added the team would produce products and services that would support “a far-changing landscape.”

How to support the kind of things that online sellers do or how to support devices that allow users to access information at the click of a finger—these are the ideas being discussed by that team, he said.

SPI Global is a wholly owned subsidiary of ePLDT Inc., whose ultimate parent is publicly listed Philippine Long Distance Telephone (PLDT) Co. According to its latest report to the Securities and Exchange Commission, SPiGlobal’s cash in bank was only P12,500 as of December 31, 2009. Parekh said the company aims to post a 14-percent to 15-percent growth this year.

He added the company has recently added 980 seats in their facility in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental, which opened in October 2009 with 548 seats, and they aim to increase that to 1,800 seats. “As it is today, we’re the city’s largest employer.”

He said they also plan to expand in Iloilo City, where they started operations in March 2005. “Actually, the expansion has started. From 580 seats, we’re targeting to add between 20-percent and 25-percent capacity this year.” The company has 8 facilities, including the Dumaguete and Iloilo locations.
