nicko November 26th, 2006, 09:27 AM After three years of deferment, McDonalds Dumaguete will soon open near the Quezon Park (in front of Unitop and beside Tops and Bottoms), so says the tarpaulin hanging in the area.

Two Kia Motor showrooms in Dumaguete? I guess they are big in Dumaguete huh? Could you post new pix of em please. I don't like Kia, but if they bring in a new CRDI Sedona minivan, I just might buy one.
I tried to go to the website to see teletechs buildings but I couldn't see the photoes too... Please post em here. Thanks much.
nicko November 26th, 2006, 10:34 AM ^^ yep.. One is in Hassarams Arcade, i think their main office. Sumone already attempted to take some shots of Teletech Building I & II and Robinsons at Dumaguete Business Park but he was chased off by security since its not allowed to take pictures. Company policy daw.
nicko November 26th, 2006, 10:38 AM CAFE MEMENTO
confessions of a coffee addict (askaparati blog (http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/b7a67/756/))
Cafe Memento ushered me in like a best friend welcoming a long-lost amiga to the warm haven of her arms... The Cafe was warm, cozy, and offered an interesting view of the Dumaguete shoreline and the similarly interesting view of shiny, happy people. The music was reggae-ish the time I was there and complemented the upbeat yet relaxing ambiance the place had.
I ordered a burrito, quesadillas and macadamia coffee... yummy... I could still feel the macadamia aftertaste of the coffee and imagine the yellow sticky rice, shredded tomato bits, juicy beef, and creamy cheese peeping out of the soft burrito tortillas... ooohhh...
Over my heavenly meal, I patiently sat by and wrote my thoughts. My two-hour stay there was peppered by snippets of conversations I overheard from the Cafe's mostly college-aged patrons. I was also lulled to my private dreamland by the relaxing view of the sea meeting, mating with the afternoon clouds...
For QC people familiar with Likha Diwa sa Gulod, the Memento ambiance is just like Likha's... except of course for the lovely coastal view and the nostalgia aroused by the knowledge that you are embraced by the quaintness and warmth of the old Dumaguete town.

Oh, people aren't allowed to take pictures at the Dumaguete Business Park? Heh, I was there this afternoon and nobody chased me away. ;) Tons of pics coming up in a few minutes...

nicko November 26th, 2006, 01:31 PM ohh.. and by the way, can someone take shots on the newly built hotel right at the downtdown area? its taking shape and apparantly, it looks good.. classic and stylish at the same time. and i never thought its big.
Coffee November 26th, 2006, 02:20 PM Hmm... I wish I hadn't promised pics already. I can't find the cable to transfer pics from the camera. I'll post them when I can. :)

Just how big is it?
Coffee November 26th, 2006, 04:34 PM Ok, here's the first batch of pics I took earlier today.
Here's the highway from Valencia to Dumaguete. I've been saying for 10 years that this road needs a fresh layer of asphalt. I guess the provincial government has other priorities though.
http://img487.imageshack.us/img487/2371/pict0111ct8.jpg
Catherina Cittadini. Very nice facade.
http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/3679/pict0112dd7.jpg
Don Bosco. Very nice school. :)

McDonalds, coming soon!
http://img83.imageshack.us/img83/9643/pict0152hx9.jpg
And here's that hotel thing nicko was talking about. This picture makes Dumaguete look like a war zone... haha... I'm a bit disappointed that the zoning laws didn't require that the building be pushed further back to give more space for more sidewalk and road. Oh well. I hope this thing turns out nice. :)

Coffee November 26th, 2006, 05:33 PM Next up, let's shift our attention to this big boring panorama of the developing Dumaguete Business Park. The construction site of Robinsons is at the left, Teletech is at the right.

http://img480.imageshack.us/img480/7660/pict0124rn6.jpg
Coffee November 26th, 2006, 05:43 PM There was this model plane show going on beside the Teletech building, with a bunch of people gathered around to look up at the sky and watch the planes flying around. Maybe that's why nobody paid much attention to me walking around and snapping photos.

uhh.. mind if u take a night shot of teletech? it looks way much better when its light effects are turned on.. murag resort.
Dumaguete Business Park looks very boring at this stage of its development. Anyway, hotels, shops, and more IT buildings will soon occupy the area in three years time because by then, the contract between the city and Teletech will expire.

Coffee November 26th, 2006, 06:25 PM And here's my last batch of pictures for today, looking at the business park's infrastructure.
Lots of piles of bricks along the side of the road. To build a sidewalk, perhaps?
http://img270.imageshack.us/img270/7388/pict0120tx0.jpg
Huge area of land for development. Huge potential for Dumaguete.
http://img456.imageshack.us/img456/9901/pict0125rs3.jpg
At this point, there's an intersection and the road forks north towards the back of the Ceres terminal.
http://img70.imageshack.us/img70/9506/pict0128gd1.jpg
The road doesn't look big from afar, but it is wide enough to potentially be a 4-lane road. And it's Dumaguete's only road with a center island aside from Rovira Drive.

Christendom November 27th, 2006, 08:21 AM NORSU studes win design contest
ARCHITECTURE students from Negros Oriental State University (NORSU) monopolized the top prizes for a design and design concept competition conducted by the City Government of Dumaguete for its proposed two-storey city health office building.
Anito, Adikoy, and Ledesma defeated other 11 Architect students and graduates coming from NORSU, Foundation University (FU), National University and Far Eastern University.
The project will rise on the 1,809-square meters vacant lot near the office of the Bureau of Fire Protection where the building housing the city health office, Municipal Trial Court in Cities, the city prosecutor's office, and the office of the Commission on Audit was burned down two years ago.
The proposed building will include the construction of a bridge that will connect to the City Council Session Hall at the main building. full story (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/dum/2006/11/27/life/norsu.studes.win.design.contest.html)

After two weeks of academic ground school - the "orientation flight", the Batch Everest prepared themselves for the ultimate experience - their first actual flight. Their first feel of the yoke, their first step on the rudders, their first glance on the instruments, their first words with the ATC.... "unexplainably awesome" as Pilot Trainee Rachendra Joshi would say during his first flight.
Like an eagle teaching her chicks to fly, their Flight Instructor Capt. Harris Dimagiba patiently prepared them for the big leap - the First Solo Flight.
For the Batch 2005 - B (Batch Everest, as they dubbed themselves), it was a self-breakthrough. Rachendra Joshi, Maheswari Dongol, Luna Pradhan and Bimala Gurung flew all the way from Kathmandu, Nepal without any knowledge about aviation but wanted so much to become a pilot and now they're about to be released for their First Solo Flight after days of hard training.
Finally, on the 29th of December, 2005, at exactly 05:14 in the afternoon, Flight Instructor, Capt. Harris Dimagiba was confident - Rachendra is free to fly alone!

1st Int'l Filipina Nursing awardee is SU alumna
Wednesday, November 22, 2006 issue
SU COLLEGE OF Nursing alumna Dr. Jean Yan became the first Filipino woman to ever receive the prestigious International Nursing Award for Advancing Human Health last November 2.
Also a 2003 Outstanding Sillimanian Awardee, she was awarded by the Lillian Carter Center for International Nursing, at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, during the Global Government Health Partners Forum.
Previous recipients of the award are Archbishop Desmund Toto, Nelson Mandela, and former US President Carter along with a number of international figures in world health.
"She received this award because of her very sterling achievement in Nursing and Midwifery in the world," said SU College of Nursing (SUCN) Dean Ma. Teresita Sy-Sinda.
Yan, who hails from Dumaguete, is the current World Health Organization chief scientist of nursing and midwifery based in Geneva.
Meanwhile, after the leakage controversy in last June's nursing board examination, SUCN finally released the new registered nurses.
They are: Abigail Antiquiera, Nadia Patricia Sevilla, and Mary Ann Gela Silva. All three gave Silliman a 100% passing rate compared to the national passing rate of 45. 24%.
Sinda said that the university usually takes the nursing board exam on December but the three took the exam last June. "There were policies [in the nursing handbook] that two violated, and one was just retaking the exam. They will probably take their oaths together with the December 2-3 examinees," explained Sinda.
When asked of the effect of the leakage scandal on the integrity of the Sillimanian passers, she said, "Silliman has always been clean, and it will remain clean. I am confident we will still be able to maintain our tradition of 100% passing in this year's board exam."

Eri Marie Frances Kajikawa, a 15-year-old, Japanese-Filipino high school junior, will represent the university. She was last year’s Miss Palakasan winner and a member of the high school debate society.
"I wasn't expecting to win since Eri had so many awards," said Miss Dumaguete 2006 and Foundation University candidate Shekina Rose Lasola. "Being Miss Dumaguete is such a great honor."
She won during the coronation night held at the Lamberto Macias Sports Complex last November 23.
"Being Miss Dumaguete 2006 and a nursing student, I plan to spearhead feeding programs for less fortunate people," said Lasola, when asked about her plans after the pageant.
Silliman University's Eri Frances Marie Kajikawa became the 1st runner up winning the title Miss Dumaguete Tourism 2006, while the 2nd runner up and Miss Sandurot title went to Eden Pearl Girasol from Ramon Teves Pastor Memorial Dumaguete Science High School.
Kajikawa was the most awarded candidate during the pageant's talent night (November 21), and coronation night. She swept eight minor awards as compared to Lasola, who won only four awards: Miss Enerva, Miss Aldea Smile, Best in Sportswear and Best in Cybersuit.
Kajikawa was adjudged Best in Talent, Best Speaker, Best in Gown, Miss Photogenic, Darling of the Press, Miss GP Cosmetics, Miss Nestea Ice and Miss Super Ferry.
When asked how she felt about her awards, Kajikawa answered: "I'm happy because these are the prizes of my efforts, and they can boost up one's self esteem. But I also understand that along with these awards are new responsibilities. I will try my best to be a good role model."

over LONDON
by ALEX RODMAN
--------------+----------------+---------------+--------------+--------
Westerners like me are always asked by people why I chose to live in Dumaguete. "It's a variety of reasons" I tell them, and despite a few setbacks, it's a pretty pleasant place to stay. The reason I find Dumaguete attractive are varied such as it's gateway(a cross-road) to many other places that I enjoy to visit like Siquijor, Apo Island, Mindanao, Moalboal,
and Cebu. There are also local places of interest including Casaroro fall and the Twin lakes. Dumaguete also has a selection of foreign restaurants for its size. Chinese, Italian, Mexican, Persian, Indian, American, Portugese,
European, and Middle-Eastern.This is very important to a foreigner as we cannot live on baboy(pork),
pusit(squid) and ampalaya everyday. Imagine Filipino people living in Europe without their 'stinky fish' and baboy. They'd be having a withdrawal symptoms as we would be craving for our favorite dishes.
The market is a highlight, sometimes busy but often the vendors are asleep at their stalls which is a laugh. Never a dull moment a dull moment here and the choice of fruit and vegetable is excellent. The nightlife isn't too bad for the size of the city. Sure it's not like in Cebu or Manila but if you want to put up with the 'very traffic', noise,
pollution and crowds then you can move there. The people in Dumaguete are very friendly and kind to foreigners, more so than Westerners in Europe are to Filipinos. When I'm back in UK I always make an effort to help foreigners especially Filipinos as they've been so courteous to me over here.
If you live here maybe you don't appreciate it. It was the same with me. When I lived in London, I didn't either. It was only when a Foreign friend came to visit, and we visited the tourist sites like the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, The British Museum and St Paul's Cathedral that was the first time I realized what a great historical city I lived in.
I have travelled to almost every town and city in the Philippines and I can assure you that Dumaguete is a special place, even the snatchers here are gentle. One night whilst walking along the boulevard 2 guys on a motorbike drove slowly behind me and snatched my cellphone from my grasp. I chased and cursed them, which seemd to work as with the look of terror the snatcher threw my cell phone into the road, just before I was to ju mp on him. I got my phone back although it did'nt function properly but at least it was a gentle snatch in the city of gentle people. So even with this unfortunate incident I still enjoy Dumaguete.
ritche December 1st, 2006, 09:46 AM Hey guys, Negros Inn is now open. And guess what, the hotel is amazing! The rooms are really nice, and I think they have free massage. But these niceties come with a more expensive price tag: the lowest rate for their rooms is 1,000 pesos. But despite that, that little hotel near the airport is, I think, one of the best in town. You should pay this new hotel a visit.
Also, the Po's Marketing Building is now looking good. Hmmm, a good addition to the city's skyline...
nicko December 1st, 2006, 04:09 PM i thought Negros Inn is just another motel since the airport area is filled with those, including some several strip bars which is a very big disappointment. i wonder why we are not able to prevent those bars from operation. well, i guess im wrong. maybe i cud check the place out. it looks good from the outside.

systematica December 1st, 2006, 05:52 PM Hi guys,
I'm heading down to Dumaguete with 3 friends from Canada next month and I have a few questions. The last time I was in Dumaguete was when I was about 10 years old (a long time ago in the 70s) when my relatives from Bacolod took me there. While my memory of the place has faded, no doubt the city has changed a lot, so I really do not know what to expect.
We'll be flying into Manila mid-January, but I think the big city would be too much of a shock to my friends so I'm thinking we'll just catch a flight to Dumaguete right away. We'll do Manila on the way out when we've chilled out for a few weeks.
From Dumaguete, our plan is to head out to Siquijor for a bit, them maybe Antulang then on to Sipalay. Boracay is a possibility after Negros, but our ultimate goal is to get to Palawan towards the end.
Language: I know people there speak Cebuano, but do they understand/speak ilonggo as well? How do people from Dumaguete and Bacolod communicate---English,Tagalog? Also, approximately where does the Cebuano/Ilonggo line happen west and north of Dumaguete--is it the provincial border?
Accomodation: Do resorts get fully booked past mid-January? I was thinking of making reservations, but we'd like to keep our schedule very open depending on our mood. I prefer just to show up, but I'm worried there wont be rooms.
Snorkelling: I remember spectacular reefs around there. Where are the best ones we should go to?
If there are other sights we should see, I'd appreciate suggestions.
Thanks in advance!

Every day, boats of all shapes and sizes pass through the Tañon Strait. A few moments on the seaside walk will allow you to see tiny banca, grand cruise ships and even oil tankers going by. The shot above was taken during low tide, so rocks were visible under the fairly calm waves.

Aside from being a college town and a tourist destination for people from all over the world, Dumaguete is also the capital city of Negros Oriental. The American colonial influence is evident once again in the design of the capital building.

The "City of Gentle People" is widely known for its laid back environment and American-colonial architecture. Dumaguete City is also considered a college town. It is home to several major universities, namely Silliman University, Negros Oriental State University, St. Paul Dumaguete, and Foundation University. Located in the southwestern Visayas region, Dumaguete City is also the Capital of Negros Oriental Province.

Hi, I'm from Bacolod and go to Dumaguete often for holidays. I use English whenever I'm in Dumaguete. The folks there don't mind it - even if you are a Filipino, not like most other places in the Philippines. The same would go for Bacolod. Try to go to Apo Island instead of Siquijor, I think Apo Island is much better. People at the northern tip of Negros Occidental speak Cebuano and Ilonggo.
nicko December 2nd, 2006, 04:37 AM @systematica: yep, Bo B's ryt, Apo Island is good. I recommend it for you. It is one of the top diving destinations in Asia. The island has even a replica in an indoor aquarium in Chicago. I'd rather choose Apo Island than Siquijor but Siquijor aint that bad. It has a lot of white sand beaches, not so much on good sites for snorkelling.
People don't mind if u speak Cebuano, Tagalog, or even English. Illonggo is not widely spoken here in dumaguete, though.
Yeah, antulang is a very good place. You can visit their site at www.antulang.com

Negros Inn is just by the airport area. Its a white building about 3-4 storeys high. You can just see it by the highway since its neon lights are catchy.

ritche December 2nd, 2006, 01:40 PM Guys, guess what, Governor Arnaiz is the best Provincial Governor in the Philippines, according to the Manila Bulletin today.
That Dumaguete is on the verge of becoming the next big thing in the Visayas can be credited a lot to the efforts of the people here. And credits also to the local government officials here...
Indeed, people from Central Visayas, such as Bohol and Cebu have shown that they have what it takes to be a "big thing"...

its been a very long time since the local government has been looking for ways to prohibit or at least regulate the number of trikes plying the roads of dumaguete. the city finds it very difficult to do so since the number of trikes here are soooo many.. probably more or less 4000 (city trikes) and getting rid of them would mean trouble as it can take away the only way of financial source of these drivers. taxis were introduced 3-5 years ago but they cannot survive here. people would rather pay 7 pesos to go to their destination than pay much by km which seem very impractical.

I was awakened when the sunlight fell on our tent making it a hothouse, and came out to see the camp in the daylight, a sprawling park-like tract of land. Forest Camp seemed to me the most beautiful campsite resort in the country. The camp has uneven terrain, vibrant with trees and coconuts. There was a creek running through it, feeding two man-made swimming pools. Over it was a hanging bridge. Footpaths inlaid with stones sliced through the tingly grass carpet. There was an area where you can set up tents, a common bathroom and toilet, and areas where you cook and grill. But there is also a restaurant at the center of the site. There were also nice, comfy cottages for those who want to straddle between modern comfort and nature. But the centerpiece remains to be a magnificent tree house. At the end part of the site, the area sloped upwards towards a forest, where you can trek and then further is already mountain.

Forest Camp is located eleven kilometers west of Dumaguete in Valencia Town. The 2.2-hectare facility is an oasis of natural wonders and offers the best in outdoor experiences like nature and adventure treks to Casaroro and Mount Talinis, camping, and horseback riding among others.
Apart from two large nipa guesthouses, a treehouse, four cottages, a dormitory, and a backpackers’ den, it also has a conference hall, a campers’ site, and a pool fed by natural waters cascading down Mount Talinis. The backpackers’ den can accommodate up to 10 people, while the dormitory holds up to 20 students. Its main hall can accommodate up to 250 people and may be resrved for private functions like conferences or wedding receptions.

The spring is so inviting but it's really cold. I can't stay in the water for more than 2 minutes or I'll freeze my balls off. It may look dirty but actually its not. The water comes from a spring and it filtered. There may be moss but its actually the same thing you see on the rocks on the rivers so you don't have to feel icky. Entrance fee is only PHP70.00/head the last time i went there. Cottages good for 2 heads for a night's stay is only PHP600.00 and there are cottages good for family use. There are a lot of cottages to choose from ranging from top hill cottages to cottages clinging on to coconut trees or cottages by the river or the hanging bridge but all of them are not air-conditioned. Anyway who needs it when it's very cold up there, good for cuddling and other "stuff", I tell you. *grin* I love staying there coz i like seeing that "smoke thingy" coming out from my mouth when i talk. Fireflies are very abundant at night. Very very romantic jud if ur with ur special someone.
There is also this fish pond with lots of lilies. You can fish out your meal with a variety of fresh water fish choices and send it to the chef for cooking. Talk about FRESH. Naa say Bangka by the pond where you can ride. Geese are plenty. Swans can be spotted floating gracefully on the pond. There is also a golf area with i don't know how many holes. Billiard tables are also availabe. What is the best in the place is their restaurant. Their buko-halo is the best! The place is very picturisque and I love it. When i feel really hot here in the city, i could always go up hill and enjoy FOREST CAMP!

DUMAGUETE CITY—One can easily identify the lighted decorations on the roof of Dr. Rico Absin’s mansion in Barangay Piapi, this city.
They are unmistakably Santa’s reindeer—Rudolph, Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Donder, Blitzen, Cupid and Comet. These decorations, along with thousands of other bright and dazzling colored lights and Christmas trees, fill Absin’s house every Christmas season.
The lighting up of Absin’s house at this time of the year has become an institution for Dumagueteños, who come with friends and family from other parts of the world to look at Dumaguete’s “Christmas House.”
This year, however, Absin has added a new theme for his Christmas decorations to coincide with this institution’s debut.
“It’s the 18th year of our Christmas decorations so we’re now paying tribute to six Disney princesses—Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Jasmine, Belle, Snow White, and Ariel,” Absin said.
Absin, an anesthesiologist in his 50s, lives alone in this house, which he inherited from his parents. With his friend Aquino Garcia, the former dean of the La Salle College of Arts and Letters, he plans different themes every year to the delight of the young and old who flock to his home.
Although not a very secretive person, Absin declines to reveal two things—his age and his budget for his yearly decorations.
“It gives me great satisfaction to see all the happy people who come to my place. I feel good knowing I bring joy to the children and the people of Dumaguete,” Absin, who is also actively involved in the Dumaguete City Tourism Council, said.
Part of the yearly tradition is the giving of breakfast and gifts to some 300 children on Christmas Day. Absin’s friends raise funds for the breakfast and gifts through dinner concerts.
But some things do change with the times. Unlike before when people could just come inside the house unannounced and take a look at the thematic Christmas decors along with Absin’s priceless antiques, silverware and toys, visitors can now come inside the gate only on six occasions during the Christmas season or they will have to watch the decorations from the fence.
“Dumaguete has seen a rise in petty crimes these past few months that I’m now afraid to just let anyone in unannounced. But people can still admire the decorations from the gate,” he said.
But Absin is quick to add that in the past 17 years that people freely came into his house, there was not a single instance that he lost any item to thieves.
The Christmas House started its nightly display last Wednesday, Nov. 22, in time for the city’s Charter anniversary last Saturday and yesterday’s fiesta celebration.

Have you heard about the move to have electric powered vehicles as the main mode of transportation here in the city? I think an engineer who used to work in the States even imported an electric engine, and as what I have heard, they are fabricating a body for that electric engine in a shop in Sibulan. Can anybody give us additional information regarding this?

December 3, 2006 issue
Silliman University College of Nursing (SUCN) moves a step higher from 3rd to 2nd in the ranking of Top Performing Nursing Schools in the Philippines with 99.29% passing rate based on the Board Exam passing rates for 2001-2005.
This result released by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and the Educational Statistics Task force of the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) was published in the Manila Broadsheets on October 28, 2006. In this latest release of the 5-year performance of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in the Licensure Exam for nurses, SUCN's rate is a few points behind the University of the Philippines' Manila's 99.80% rating.
Dr. Maria Teresita Sy- Sinda, SUCN dean, expressed elation over the result, saying that the move from number 4, a few years ago, to the number 2 rank clearly shows SUCN's commitment in providing quality nursing education amid the increasing nursing population. The real scores have shown where we really are among the top schools of nursing in the Philippines. SUCN is looking forward to the state-of-the-art Nursing Building that will soon be erected. Alumni and friends are enjoined to be a part of this endeavor through their donations and gifts.

SPi Expands Global Delivery Capability With Two New Asia-Based Facilities
Washington, DC, November 5, 2006 – SPi, a global provider of editorial, content production, and BPO solutions for publishers, today announced the opening of two new, state-of-the-art delivery centers in India and the Philippines. As a result of SPi’s rapid growth and the increased demand for its services, SPi sees these purpose-built facilities as significant steps in positioning itself to meet its customers’ needs.
The new India-based facility, located in Pondicherry, will serve as SPi’s primary delivery center for its end-to-end book operation. The three-story, 12,000 square foot facility will house over 600 content specialists. Using a robust technology platform, these talented professionals provide a wide array of editorial and content production services for publishers of books, serials and major reference works, as well as eBooks and multi-media content. SPi’s capabilities in Pondicherry will continue to be supplemented by SPi resources in both Chennai and New Delhi.
Ernest Cu, President and Chief Executive Officer of SPi said “The growing volume of our book business has prompted us to make the strategic decision to expand and move into a
new state-of-the-art facility and to consolidate our existing operations in Pondicherry. With this move, we will be able to optimize our business operation such that we can be more
competitive and increase efficiencies for our clients.”
Cu went on to say, “At SPi, we strive to be the employer of choice in every country in which we operate, and we are committed to providing our employees with the best working
environment possible. These new facilities enable us to make good on this promise to our employees.”
The new Philippine-based office, which is located in Dumaguete, allows SPi to effectively expand upon the content production and editorial services being provided by its Manila-based Journal operation. This 20,000 square foot purpose-built facility accommodates over 550
content specialists providing XML structuring, typesetting, and copyediting services to a
growing list of journal publishers worldwide. Both the Dumaguete and Pondicherry facilities include many state-of-the-art features like internet-enabled training and testing rooms, ergonomically designed work stations and spacious recreational areas.
Frank Stumpf, President and COO of SPi’s Publishing division said, “We continue to look for the most talented publishing professionals available in India and the Philippines, and our
facilities allow us to attract the top talent in the market place. Dumaguete offers us access to talent from one of the top universities in the Philippines, as well as several other universities,
and we believe the quality of English language skill in the city is very high. By hiring the best in every country in which we operate, we can continue to provide our clients with high quality,
cost-effective, end-to-end content outsourcing solutions.”

Manila. I relocated here as part of the start up team.
systematica December 5th, 2006, 04:29 PM I can't wait to get there next month and get away from the snow. Where's the best place to stay in the city? I'm looking at the Residecia al Mar or the Bethel Guest House -- which one is better, or if there's a nicer place I'd appreciate your recommendations.

If you're a smoker, Bethel is a no go. Residencia al Mar? I'm not sure if this is the same as La Residencia but if it is, I would prefer it. The rooms are cozier as compared to the hospital ambience of Bethel. They also have wi-fi. Another option for you is Hotel Palwa which just opened a couple of months ago or Coco Grande.
systematica December 5th, 2006, 05:32 PM Thanks for the info, firea. I'm not a smoker and neither are my 3 friends. La Residencia (al Mar) looks like the better choice, then. Are Palwa and CocoGrande close to the Boulevard? Since we'll probably be suffering from extreme jet lag, I'm looking for a place that has a good balance of quietness vs. convenient actvities/services within walking distance. Also, my friends have never travelled too far from North America, and since we're skipping Manila on the way in, this will be their first night in the Philippines so I'd like this to be a favourable first impression.

Hotel Palwa is not along the boulevard but it is near. Coco Grande is still located conveniently within the city with access to public transportation. It's a bit farther from the boulevard but still within 5 minutes*. Coco Grande have bigger rooms and their in-house restaurant serves good food. It has the same owner as Coco Amigos (a restaurant along the boulevard) and Coco Grove (a resort in Siquijor).
La Residencia sounds like a good choice. It is the preferred hotel of our Management team within Dumaguete City. They have 2 restaurants adjacent to each other (Wakagi and Don Atilano). Wakagi serves Japanese food and Don Atilano is known for their steaks.
*Distance is relative to whom you're asking, btw. Locals would consider a 10 minute motorcycle ride far. I would consider that near considering I grew up in Manila.
Coffee December 6th, 2006, 01:21 AM La Residencia and Bethel are both good hotels at the boulevard. :)
ritche December 6th, 2006, 12:26 PM (Guys, I hope you don't mind this post. This is a little bit long, but you can see these articles in my blog site (http://techhallucinations.blogspot.com/))
There were two articles that caught my attention in the last 2 issues of the Metro Post. One talks about replacing the motorcycles for hire (MCH) plying along Perdices Street with foot-powered tricycles, while the other talks about the future of Dumaguete.
There are advantages in replacing the motor-powered MCH with foot-powered tricycle (or Pot-pot, as it is called in many areas). One, it reduces the exhaust of fossil fuels along this area. And people, especially environmentalists, are talking of going green nowadays.
Perdices Street is the show window of Dumaguete, and the latter is portraying itself as a modern global city wherein IT and high technology industries such as call center, medical transcription, data processing, etc, can flourish. Its environs may even host semiconductor firms such as Texas Instruments and Intel in the future. Dumaguete is also gearing to be a people processing zone (PPZ) where people are educated and molded to become productive members of the society, ready to change it for the better.
Having those-pedal powered vehicles doesn’t seem to go well with the vision we are trying to achieve. For one, it is raw human labor. Where is innovation and processing of people in this business? And it also shows poverty. Is this the image that we would like to portray?
I totally agree with us going green. But not with those pedal-powered vehicles. Why don’t we make Perdices Street into a walking street, meaning no vehicles will be permitted to ply in the area? Or if people should take a ride while plying the street, why don’t we make plenty of those calesas and make them the main mode of transportation in the area. In this way, we will have some tourism sense.
One time I asked a friend what should be the mode of transportation in the city, and if we should rely on those noisy pedicabs forever. According to him, definitely we should get away with those pedicabs, the sooner the better. He then suggested that we come up with trams, San Francisco, California style, plying along the city’s main thoroughfares. I asked him why trams. To which he replied: to make the city unique from the rest of the cities in the country.
Whatever happened to the experiment to have an electric-powered vehicle as one of the modes of transportation in Dumaguete? I heard a US-based engineer purchased an electric engine and brought it to one of the shops in Sibulan so a body could be manufactured for it. I hope that would be successful so we can have pollution-less electric-powered vehicles as one of the main modes of transportation in the city.
I am very passionate about Dumaguete’s future. I have long been writing about this topic since I was in college. In fact my master’s thesis dwelt on the readiness of the City of Dumaguete and its environs as destinations for investments in the IT industries.
The future belongs to us, the new generations. There is only one direction I would like Dumaguete to take - a prosperous city with multicultural, multiracial, free people enjoying the serenity of its beautiful, green, and pollution-less environment. It should be a center of culture, education and educated people with industries related to its university town appeal. It should be a center of arts and innovative ideas. Dumaguete must not be afraid to be different from other cities in the country. Rather, it must be a pacesetter of positive changes.
But we have seen them in big cities such as Manila and Cebu, even Baguio and Sta. Rosa, Laguna. Economic growth brings with it a lot of problems such as crime, pollution and burgeoning of population.
Dumaguete has plenty of the ingredients to be an economic success in the 21st century, which is the information age. In this age, the main driver of wealth is knowledge, not anymore land, industries and financial resources. It is a producer of high quality human resources, and it has a robust fiber optics network. It owns the geothermal power plant which supplies electric power to our neighbors such as economic powerhouse Cebu and Negros Occidental.
In fact, as we can see around, the early signs of an economic takeoff are clearly evident. But there are just a lot of risks associated with economic development. On the other hand, we can not just sit back, relax and watch our neighbors pass us by as they progress economically. Despite the fact that Dumaguete and Oriental Negros is not really poor when it comes to resources, we have continually lagged behind our neighbors when it comes to economic opportunities. Even the relatively resource-poor Bohol has zoomed ahead of us.
We will be blamed by people, especially those from outside our city and province, many years from now if we have not attained our potential, and if we have not made our city and its people, prosperous.
It is, therefore, very imperative that we take charge of our future and look forward to a very progressive and caring society which is competitive not only with cities and places in the Philippines, but even with cities and places outside the country.
ritche December 6th, 2006, 12:28 PM BUT how can we go to where we want to be?
The other article talks about having a vision. Where does Dumaguete want to go 5 years from now, 10 years from now, 20 years from now, and so on, and so forth. From whom should the vision emanate from? Should it come from the mayor who comes and goes out of office? Should it come from one individual in the city, or should it come from a meeting of the minds of the various sectors of the city? Who should implement the vision? These are hard questions that we need to answer.
Unlike a corporation, a city like ours is made up of a lot of people with various interests and ideas. A corporation usually is owned by one individual, family or a group of people with common interests. What makes it easy for a corporation, establishment or an organization to govern is that it usually has only one set of vision implemented by those who are in charge.
The vision makes it imperative for us to decide what direction we want to take, and focus all our efforts towards attaining our goals and objectives as stated in that vision. It should be specific, flexible and stated simply, and people in our community should be able to identify with it. The key to success is in sticking to our vision no matter what. As such, it would take a long and hard thinking in coming up with a really workable and attainable vision.
But unless we have a vision, Dumaguete will be getting nowhere, and continue to lag behind its neighbors many years from now. True, it has a vision (and that was published in one of the issues of the MetroPost), but as one of the columnists in this newspaper said, that vision merely states what are happening nowadays in Dumaguete, with just a few more goals and objectives to attain. It is not ambitious enough so as to spur and inspire various sectors of the society to work hard and labor all through the day and night to attain such objectives.
One such objective is in having only 5 BPO companies by 2015. That, for me, is a very lame objective. Compared to what one of the writers in this newspaper wrote in one of his articles when he mentioned that we should have 7 large BPO companies by 2011, that vision is very uninspiring. I would rather work hard and labor trying my best to have those 7 corporations by 2011 (we now have 2 of them, if we mean large multinational BPO corporations) than to just sit back and relax waiting long for 2015 to come with only a very limited success. People are inspired by grand visions, and they most probably would work hard looking forward to a big harvest in the future.
I like the way that columnist stated it: people here would be going to gleaming and shining offices, and go out to hangout places in 3 areas around the city after work. And we would not anymore be trailing our neighbors, but compete with them neck to neck. All these he envisions to happen by 2011. And if I may add, there would be a few medium to high-rise buildings dotting our skyline by then, giving our city a cosmopolitan appeal.
It is good to look forward to a big future, and dream with our feet on the ground. But we need to prepare and work hard for it. Unless we are lazy and do not care at all, in which way we will be going to the future with the same circumstances, or worse, with a downgraded situation. Is this what we want to happen?
To Coffee, I hope you don't mind me using your pictures in some of my posts...

There's a new place near the airport called Negros Inn...It's quite nice but a little expensive. You might give it a try. It offers, I think, free massage.

The Weekly Sillimanian
Silliman University College of Nursing (SUCN) now ranks 2nd in the country's Top Performing Nursing Schools with a 99.29% passing rate based on the board exam passing averages for 2001-2005.
The University of the Philippines-Manila is ranked 1st with a 99.80% rating.
The result, which was released by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and the Educational Statistics Task Force of the Professional Regulation Commission, was published in the Manila Bulletin's October 28 issue.
SUCN Dean Maria Teresita Sy-Sinda said, "The no. 2 rank clearly shows SUCN's commitment in providing quality nursing education amid the increasing nursing population."
Meanwhile, the Philippine Board of Mechanical Engineering awarded for the first time a Plaque of Recognition to the SU Mechanical Engineering (ME) Department last November 17 in Manila for being one of the top performing ME schools in the Philippines.
The awarding ceremony was held at the Manila Hotel, which was also attended by the new mechanical engineers.
College of Engineering and Design Dean Leo Mission said, "The award commended the ME Department for being ranked no. 3 in Category A (schools with 10-24 examinees) among more or less a one hundred schools offering ME courses."
"It's really great being recognized as one of the top performing schools in ME throughout the whole Philippines, and it's also a way of advertising our university," Mission said.
It can be recalled that 12 out of 13 SU examinees posted a 92% passing percentage during the October 2006 ME Licensure Examination.

bluejay03 December 9th, 2006, 05:19 AM (Guys, I hope you don't mind this post.
Ritch, I fully concur with the points you raised. That is really well done. And I admire your passion for Dumaguete.
In another post you mentioned about Vision. That is really very important. I am not aware if the city has that. Or in case, it does have, the same was not properly communicated to all stakeholders. We should be forward looking. What does the city really intend to be in the years ahead? A vision should be BIG, HAIRY, AUDACIOUS GOALS (from Jim Collins, an authority on this subject). Apparently, the city does not have this.
Our city is strong in terms of human resources, but it wasn't able to fully leverage this to attract businesses in need of our skilled manpower. It is only as of late that there is an improvement. But I believe more could still be achieved.
Guys, am currently looking for ideas for my thesis. Has a study been done on a merger of Dumaguete, Valencia, Sibulan, and Bacong? Would appreciate your inputs on this. thanks...

I guess none yet. This would be a very interesting topic for a thesis. And it would help our city and the province a lot, especially if you will disseminate your findings to our constituents here. I'll be here to lend a helping hand should you pursue this topic for your thesis...
There are just a lot of issues regarding the Metro Dumaguete concept (merger of Dumaguete, Valencia, Sibulan, and Bacong). One is transportation system. Another would be security and sharing of resources...plus of course, and I think this is one of the most important, urban planning. But there are moves to create a Metro Dumaguete area with corresponding congressional approval to make this official. And if they should pursue this, it would be good that the towns of Dauin and San Jose would be included to satisfy the 250,000 population needed for a place to be declared a metropolitan area.
One very important accomplishment, so far, to this effect is the approval of the Php400 million, 6-lane, 30 meter wide superhighway from Sibulan to Bacong...

POP ARAZZI By Nathalie M. Tomada
The Freeman (http://www.philstar.com/philstar/FREEMAN200612112402.htm) 12/11/2006
A still untitled telenovela produced by ABS-CBN Cebu and scheduled for broadcast in Cebuano-speaking regions next year is being shot as of press time at Silliman University, the more than a century-old campus beside the sea and central attraction of Dumaguete City.
I've been told that the story revolves around an on-campus romance and features a couple of actors who figured in the nationwide artista search, "Star Circle Quest." Since it's a campus romance, I can imagine one scene capturing a very familiar sight on the university grounds-students walking leisurely underneath the canopy of the ubiquitous Acacia trees, laughing and perhaps, holding hands.
With its sprawling topography that has held many a visitor I've encountered enchanted, there's not a campus in Visayas that's any more photogenic or "telegenic" than Silliman University. I say that with confidence not because this is my former alma mater, but because I remember the "campus-based" subjects for our photography class came at us in abundance-from Silliman Hall, the university's oldest structure that cuts a striking picture to anyone aboard an approaching ferry, to the SU Church with its old cathedral design and multihued, stained glass windows. Expect some of these oft-photographed landmarks of the campus, founded by American Presbyterian missionaries in 1901, plus new edifices to be featured in the Cebuanovela.
It should be worth-noting that the campus has lately been a favorite onscreen setting (and rightfully so!), from sitcoms such as GMA 7's Bubble Gang and Lagot Ka Isusumbong Kita to even a movie, Star Cinema's Close To You, which starred the love triangle of John Lloyd Cruz, Bea Alonzo and Sam Milby.
Silliman to host Pinoy Media Congress next year
According to Dr. Rose Baseleres, dean of Silliman University's new College of Communication (formerly known as School of Communication), ABS-CBN's Studio 23 in cooperation with the Philippine Association of Communication Educators (PACE) will bring the Pinoy Media Congress to the Visayas and Mindanao sometime next year with Silliman University selected as host. (Dr. Baseleres was recently elected vice-president of PACE, an organization of communication arts teachers and institutions offering communication, broadcasting, journalism and advertising degrees.)
This announcement comes on the heels of the successful holding of the 2nd Pinoy Media Congress, a unique interaction between media experts, teachers and students attended by some 900 participants from different universities and colleges nationwide, in Manila last month.
Wait, a postscript: Congratulations to Salve Asis, The FREEMAN entertainment columnist ("Showbiz Dribble" every Sunday), who is also assistant entertainment editor of Pilipino Star Ngayon and entertainment editor of PM for winning (wow!) P100,000 cash and a brand-new N73 cellphone in Eat Bulaga's segment, On The Spot Jackpot, last Saturday.

Cebu Pacific (CEB), the country’s low fare leader and leading domestic airline, will add a second daily frequency to its Manila-Dumaguete service beginning February 14, 2007
The additional daily A319 Manila-Dumaguete service is scheduled to depart from Manila at 7:10am, arriving in Dumaguete at 8:25am; the flight then departs from Dumaguete at 8:55am and arrives back in Manila at 10:10am.
“The additional frequency will double our capacity to Dumaguete and allow CEB to offer more options for travelers to and from Dumaguete. This will also mean that we will be able to offer more low fares to the public, especially to those who have not been to the many tourist attractions of Dumaguete and the surrounding islands,” Candice Iyog, CEB marketing director said.
The airline has extended its system-wide seat sale offer of only P98 for all domestic routes and P999 for all regional destinations from December 6 to 12. All quoted fares are for one-way travel only. The promo is good for travel from January 1 to March 31, 2007. The seat sale fares are exclusive of surcharges, government tax.
“We hope that people will take advantage of the seat sale and visit the many destinations the Philippines has to offer and since we start our second frequency on February 14, maybe its not too early to buy tickets for Valentine’s day too,” Iyog added.
The quickest way to avail of the seat sale is through CEB’s website (cebupacificair.com).
Now in its 11th year, CEB has the newest fleet in the Philippines and one of the newest in Asia, with a fleet age of less than 10 months, as it operates 12 brand new Airbus aircraft to its 20 domestic and 7 regional destinations to include Bangkok starting on December 14 and Jakarta on January 31, 2007. The airline awaits the delivery of two more Airbus aircraft in early 2007 to complete its $670 million re-fleeting program.

nicko December 14th, 2006, 04:46 PM THE CATHEDRAL OF ST CATHERINE OF ALEXANDRIA
The oldest stone church in the whole of Negros island.. It was originally built in 1754, reconstructed in 1885 and extended in 1936. Since then, many modern touches have already been incorporated into the cathedral's interior and exterior.
Its facade taken from quezon park

This skylight in the Dumaguete Cathedral gives a green glow to the altar area. I was impressed by it's kaleidoscope-like shape.
http://img157.imageshack.us/img157/8716/dgtecathedralglass0gs.jpg
Despite the changes, the cathedral still remains a beautiful sight to behold.

Blue Glass: This skylight is found directly above the center crucifix of the Dumaguete Cathedral. This glass, combined with the circular skylight (also found on this page) gives a distinct blue and green glow to the altar area.

its BELFRY: Dumaguete City's Spanish belfry is one of the city's most memorable landmarks. It was built in 1811 to warn the citizens of attack.
To this day, it is unfortunately leaning westward to a few degrees. So now it's Dumaguete's own version of a leaning tower.

bluejay03 December 15th, 2006, 01:59 AM Guys,
Just got a 2007 calendar from PNOC EDC yesterday. It featured "undiscovered" or lesser known tourist attractions. It had one page featuring Negros Oriental. Three pictures were shown, Lake Balinsasayao, Baho Cave, and a certain Hinakpan Hills in Guihulngan. I was really surprised with the last one. Hinakpan Hills has a semblance to the famed Chocolate Hills of Bohol. In fact, when I showed it to my officemates, all of them reacted that it was the Chocolate Hills. The caption described it as consisting of "237 limestone peaks in unique shapes and sizes"
I will try look for a scanner and post the pic...
nicko December 15th, 2006, 02:14 AM well, oriental negros definitely has it all. it may not be known to all but we have our own version of bohol's famed chocolate hills, although much less in number. its definitely a good resemblance. sad thing though, its not well promoted. good thing during buglasan festival yearly, municipalities and cities have the opportunity for their own wonders to be exposed.
white sand beaches, lakes, volcanoes, diving, mountain climbing, good food, friendly people, rich history, culture, blessed with beauty, and more.. im proud to say, we have it.

Actually, I've heard about these hills, ala Chocolate Hills, some years ago from a friend but he mentioned that it is in Canlaon City. So it is Guihulngan pala. There are a lot of potential tourists attractions in Negros Oriental but their potentials are not yet maximized. In a column in Negros Chronicle, it mentioned that the problem regarding our local tourism is that we don't have "signature destination package" though we do have plenty of interesting places. Each place is promoted individually. Tourists would usually stay in a place for just a day or two. Unlike for example in Bohol, one can go to the Chocolate Hills, the man-made forest, Loboc River, Sandugo Shrine, Hinagdanan cave, and Panglao beach all in a single day.
Maybe Negros Oriental can have dolphin watching in Bais City by dawn or early morning, lunch at the sandbar in Manjuyod, spelunking in Mabinay by afternoon, then retreat at Antulang near the scenic Tambobo Bay or in the cool mountains of Valencia.
It would probably take a day to snorkel and scuba dive in the world reknowned Apo Island so that would be an entirely different package.
Or if one might borrow the concept of dining at Loboc river, one can do it in more adventurous way by treking on the mountains of Sibulan through a four-wheel drive vehicle or a motorcycle and upon reaching at the top, one can view the pristine waters of the Twin Lakes (Balinsasayao and Danao). Then one can ride on a floating restaurant (I hope this concept will become a reality) and will take a tour on the whole lake since it is a very huge body of water.
Or one can go mountain treking and pass through the forest, rivers, and waterfalls (oh, there are lots of them along the way) on to the platteau in Carancho near the apex of Mt. Talinis, one of the tallest mountains in the country. Have an overnight encampment there and by the morning take a shower in one of those waterfalls.
Or one go to Forest Camp and.... oh, there are so many beautiful places running in my mind and it's stressing me out. Maybe, you can make your own "signature destination package" and I'll be the first one to avail it to relieve myself of stress ...

MOUNTAIN CLIMBING
For a mountain is not just a mass of rock and earth rising above the plain.
A mountain is a landmark which people have seen for centuries. Such a landmark
must have colored their thoughts and excited their imagination. It is often
said that people climb a mountain because "it is there". it is a witty remark,
but it is also profoundly true. I think the real reason why people climb mountains
because they feel the need to do so. They feel that they are not real master of the
land until they haved scaled its heights.
Mount Kanlaon
Explore an active volcano, Mt. Kanlaon on Negros Island. This active volcano,
at almost 2600 meters high, is one of the 5 highest mountains in the Philippines.
It's new crater is a breathtaking 400 m deep and around 100 m wide.
http://www.dumagueteoutdoors.com/mountain_climbing/img/kanlaon.jpg
The trail to the top is steep and we'll climb through different vegetation zones from rich agriculture land to thick rain forest until reaching the lunar-like landscape surrounding the crater .Taking three days to explore this mountain, we'll spend one night at a pension house and the next night at our camp on the crater saddle in tnts. From there view the whole Visaya
region with the clouds just a stone's throw away. (source www.active-philippines.com)
Mount Talinis
http://www.dumagueteoutdoors.com/mountain_climbing/img/talinis.jpg
Negros Oriental’s prominent peaks, the Cuernos de Negros or Horns of Negros
rise 5,095 feet above sea level and are situated 9 km.
Mt. Talinis is located in Negros Oriental, about 1 hour away from
downtown Dumaguete City. Nature lovers can enjoy the unspoiled scenery,
Nailig and Yagunyum lakes, and the lush vegetation.

MABINAY CAVING
http://www.dumagueteoutdoors.com/caving/mabinay/img/crystalcave.jpg
Mabinay is an upland municipality situated 88 kilometers north of Dumaguete City
right near the provincial boundary of Negros Oriental and Occidental.
It is known to have some of the best cave system in the Philippines.
In this municipality alone, there are bouts a hundred or more caves.
http://www.dumagueteoutdoors.com/caving/mabinay/img/pix1.jpg
To date, the South Negros Speleo, Mountain & Cave Rescue team, have already explored about 45
caves here in Mabinay and we have listed prospective caves that are to be explored
this summer, when the water is low. 60 % of the caves that we explored have
subterranean river and many end in siphon, nearly all dip towards the north.
http://www.dumagueteoutdoors.com/caving/mabinay/img/pix2.jpg
In the 45 caves the we explored, we selected eight (8) caves for the public to see,
expore, conquer and enjoy. We classified this eight caves into three(3) levels of
exploration, four (4) caves for beginners, two (2) caves for advance and (2) caves
for extreme caving. The remaining 37 caves, we leave them alone and let the cave and
its dwellers enjoy their undisturbed environment.

ROCK CLIMBING AND CANYONING
http://www.dumagueteoutdoors.com/rock_climbing/img/canyoning.jpg
Climbing covers a range of recreational, adventurous or sporting activities
involving using one's hands and feet to move up the surface of a steep object.
http://www.dumagueteoutdoors.com/rock_climbing/img/climb2.jpg
Evolving from the pursuit of mountaineering, rock climbing is the scaling of steep rocky surfaces, usually using ropes and other
climbing equipment for protection.

APO ISLAND ROCK CLIMBING
This tiny island off the coast of Dumaguete is almost completely
ringed with 20m cliffs of stable limestone, offering fascinating
climbing in a stunning setting. The island is surrounded by crystal
water and extensive reefs, ideal for post-climb diving expeditions.
http://www.dumagueteoutdoors.com/rock_climbing/img/apo.jpg
Truly fearless (or perhaps foolhardy) climbers can cap off their
ascent with a 12m dive into the ocean below. There are five established routes,
ranging from 5.6 to 5.10, and the potential is there for many others. The island is a 30-minute boat ride from shore, and it is worth seeking the help of local climbers – contact the Dumaguete-based Cuernos de Negros Mountaineering Club, who can also arrange mountain
treks into the interior of southern Negros.

BAIS DOLPHIN AND WHALEWATCHING
http://www.dumagueteoutdoors.com/dolphinwatching/bais/img/pix2.jpg
Experience the magic spell of the world's most popular entertainers of the sea!
A scenic cruise through the Tanon Strait lying between Negros Oriental and Cebu Island, we proceed towards Bais, home to frolicking dolphins and whales. Accompanied by a naturalist spotter on board the vessel, they identify the whales and dolphins. You can find Spotted, Spinner, Striped, Bottle nose and Frasier dolphins. These lovable creatures are usually at their playful best during the early morning calm seas and sunny days. So, come and witness this spectacular play and discover how enchanting these dolphins and whales are in their natural habitat. It is an unforgettable experience for children.

Lunch at the pristine 7 km Sandbar caps an already exhilirating morning. And an afternoon swim refreshes the soul. On the way back, if the tide is high, we visit the well preserved Talabong Mangrove.
The Mangroves in Bais form dense thickets which make it a good habitat of several important wetland wildlife such as the endemic Philippine mallards or wild ducks, various species of herons or egrets including the migratory giant heron from Australia.

Security is strict? What are you not allowed to do?
I drove into the area this afternoon... yeah, that brick pathway is very wide. About as wide as two lanes of a road, I think. 2007 nat'l media congress to be held in SU
Written by Rodrigo E. Bolivar II

For the first time, the Pinoy Media Congress, organized by ABS-CBN and the Philippine Association of Communication Educators Foundation (PACE), will be held outside Metro Manila.
"PACE decided that it was time to move the 3rd Pinoy Media Congress to make it truly national. They said that it should be held in Silliman [since] we are the pioneer mass communication school outside Manila," Dr. Rosario Baseleres, newly-elected PACE vice president and SU College of Communication dean said.
"I plan to maximize participation from Visayas and Mindanao," she added.
The 2006 congress was held last November 27-28 at Meriam College in Quezon City. Lecturers included ABS-CBN's top radio and television executives, managers, news anchors, and personalities like News and Current Affairs Managing Director Maria Ressa.
The two-day lecture on mass media-related topics was attended by two mass communication juniors, Robert Jed Malayang and Jian Wasawas, along with representatives from 48 other schools in the country.
Malayang shared that his favorite lecturers of the congress were Associate Professor of Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, Indrajit Banerjee, and ABS-CBN's Managing Director for News and Current Affairs, Maria Ressa.
"Associate Professor Indrajit Banerjee of the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore talked about the latest trends in Asian media today. One of the challenges he said was [on] how we bring about a more Asian-oriented media and how we take advantage of technologies. Ressa, [on the other hand], talked about the passion for news and the passion for speaking the truth. She's very idealistic and yet she still finds a way to work within the business of the industry," said Malayang.

Luce Foundation to renovate auditorium

THE LUCE FOUNDATION, once headed by Time magazine-owner Henry Luce III, will send money to Silliman University for the renovation of the Luce Auditorium, said College of Performing Arts (COPA) Acting Director Joseph Basa.
Basa said that the United Board of Christian Higer Education (UBCHEA) will manage the fund, although the university still doesn't know how much it will be.
"A team from UBCHEA came to the university last August 10 to assess the present condition of the Luce Auditorium," Basa said.
The evaluating team was composed of UBCHEA members, together with former SU Acting President Betty Abregana and an architect from Hong Kong.
Basa, who chairs the committee on the Luce Auditorium assessment, said that they also presented a proposal to UBCHEA.
It includes improvement of the Luce's interior such as the seats, air conditioning units, lighting and sound systems; construction of comfort rooms and ramps going inside the auditorium for the handicapped; relocation of the stairs going to the dressing room; and, repairing the structural cracks and roof leaks.
COPA relocation proposal
Basa added that the committee also proposed the construction of an adjacent building to the Luce Auditorium, which will serve as the new home for the College of Performing Arts (COPA).
"The idea came from the university president to turn the Luce Auditorium as the core of COPA. Since it is already under COPA management, why not make it part of the whole COPA complex?" explained Basa.
However, Basa stressed that all these proposals are still subject for approval by the Luce Foundation.
"We still don't know when the renovation will start, and which proposals will be approved by the Foundation. That will come from UBCHEA," Basa said.

ritche December 20th, 2006, 02:51 PM I sneaked in at the Dumaguete Business Park this afternoon and took those pictures...Sorry I wasn't able to position myself well to take good pictures because I was trying to avoid catching the attention of the security guards, so I have to take those pictures hurriedly...
Sources said that they would put umbrellas and some benches in the brick pathways, and that some areas would be used for coffeshops and hangout places. Mayb they will also put palms and other shade trees in that area...
They are now starting to put fences at the Robinsons construction area, and pretty soon the activities going on inside the construction won't anymore be visible to the public, at least in some months to come...
Some tips so you can get inside the Dumaguete Business Park:
1. Pretend that your cousin or girlfriend (boyfriend, whatever) is working at Teletech.
2. Pretend that you are going to submit an application and resume for CSR at Teletech.
3. Pretend that you are looking for a possible site for your business in Dumaguete, and that you are considering very hard putting it up at the Business Park (you have to look like a decent businessman, right? So you have to dress up really, really well)...
4. Well, sometimes you could talk it over with the security guards in the area. Tell them that you are there for sightseeing. But you have to be sure that they are in a good mood. Better yet, why don't you offer them a bribe (Hehehehe :) )
ritche December 20th, 2006, 02:52 PM The new Cebuanovela's location is Silliman University.
ABS-CBN Cebu's stars and crew shot scenes around the campus for "Amor Chicko" last December 6-10.
"Amor Chicko" stars Charles Christenson of Star Circle Quest Batch 2 and Eda Nolan of ABS-CBN Manila's "Let's Go" barkada sitcom.
"The concept of 'Amor Chicko' is like a Cinderella story," said Jurey Mirafuentes, writer and assistant director of the show.
"We chose Silliman as its location because it is like a hidden treasure in the Visayas. School scenes will be shot here entirely," he added.
"Amor Chicko" will replace "Milyonaryong Mini," and will start airing on January 9, 2007, before "TV Patrol Central Visayas."
Office of Information and Publications Director Mark Raygan Garcia quoted Donna Ocampo, head of entertainment and production of ABS-CBN Cebu, "We wanted Silliman because of its environment similar to that of Harvard University. It is a university where nature complements learning."

yeah.. i have to agree about that tor. anyway, maybe u could also indicate in your site that this structure has just been approved as one of the UNESCO world heritage sites as being the only american wooden-stick architecture in the whole of asia built in 1903. this structure also plays a significant role symbolizing dumaguete's being a university town.
Christendom December 21st, 2006, 05:14 AM Expedite construction of Convention Center
Gov. George Arnaiz has ordered the Provincial Engineer's Office to fast-track the construction of the Convention Center and to make sure that it will be ready for the International Rondalla Festival to be held in February, 2007.
Arnaiz said he guarantees that the venue will be ready for the hosting of the Cuerdas sa Panaghiusa: 2nd International Rondalla Festival.
He added that the convention center is the biggest in Oriental Negros, can accommodate at least 1,000 people, and ideal for seminars and conventions.
The governor said he believes the province is now ready to host international events since all committee heads had been trained for their assignments after the long celebration of the Buglasan Festival of Festivals.
Senior Supt. Melvin Buenafe, police provincial director, said they have been preparing for the festival because foreign visitors are expected to attend.
Buenafe said they have coordinated with other law enforcement agencies in the province to properly address the security measures during the festival.
He added that they asked for troop augmentation especially in guarding and securing all ports of entry in the province. He also explained that a well-secured festival will give a positive image for the province because many European and American will be attending the festival.
Most visitors will come from European nations and the U.S.
Oriental Negros is described as one of the safest place in the country but Buenafe said there is no reason to be complacent. He said he is asking the support of the communities in order to maintain the peaceful environment of the province, especially during the festival. source (http://www.visayandailystar.com/2006/December/21/negor2.htm)

Silliman seeks options to keep tuition down
Written by Rodrigo E. Bolivar II
Thursday, 30 November 2006
Silliman University President Ben Malayang bared the university's plans to prevent the tuition from increasing next school year during the All-University Academic Convocation last November 23 at the Luce Auditorium.
Malayang said that the university will be sending letters to parents and students because "[SU] would like to aim for tuition being paid at the same level as [the students] are paying now, so that there will be no need to increase tuition."
He explained that instead of paying lower fees per unit as the students proceed to a higher level, they may need to pay the same tuition for all levels.
Incidentally, this is the 4th consecutive year that SU has not increased tuition fees.
"We feel that this is a much better option than to increase tuition across the board. This is our way of ensuring that we keep the pressure of tuition increase down in Silliman," Malayang said.
Furthermore, he added that for this semester, the university will try to distribute as much as Php20 million in scholarships for the students. "Four out of five Silliman students are currently enjoying scholarships from the university," Malayang said.
He added that the university will also attempt to distribute about Php10 million worth of professorial chairs to boost the research and publication capabilities of the faculty.
5 Priority Projects
In addition, Malayang also revealed that the focus of the university's resource development are focused on five priority projects.
The first priority project is the completion of the Portal Building. "Once the building is done, it will continue to provide support for scholarships and other operations of the university," he said.
The second priority project is the construction of the College of Nursing building whose construction will hopefully begin by January next year.
"We are also looking for support and donors for the visiting scholars program to allow our faculty to go somewhere for faculty development, in exchange for faculty [from other schools] so that we have a continuing recharging of viewpoints and ideas for the university," Malayang said, referring to the third priority project.
The fourth priority project is the generation of funds to support theological education in Silliman, and the fifth is to continue the fundraising for the Jovito Salonga Center for Law and Development.
"We want to make sure that even [as] the university improves its services to you, the corresponding pressure for increasing the tuition of the university will continue to be down," Malayang said.

So a lot of Sillimanians are now actually enjoying scholarships...That's good news! But I think it is still earning a lot, especially from foreign students?
nicko December 21st, 2006, 06:13 AM yep.. their number increases every semester. i was doing a research on why these foreign students study here.. one interesting reason i got especially from the iranians (they compose the largest bulk) is that when they study here in silliman, they automatically get more job benefits compared to that of iranians who study in their own land. plus, when they get back in their country, people treat them with high regard giving them much advantage in having high working positions. if they are lucky enough, they get housing incentives. this one surprised me. koreans on the other hand study here because of the very good and quality english programs. there are sooo many koreans now here. even in our subdivision, koreans are occupying a lot of houses now.. and they are extremely friendly. i like them.

A call center in Dumaguete City is encouraging retirees to work as part-time employees, its site manager Mel Montaño said.
He said TeleTech is now accepting retirees to work as part-timers at least 20 hours a week.
There are at least 10 percent of 40-year-old and above applicants who were hired by the company.
Montaño said they found out that retirees are reliable, professional and good examples for the younger employees.
TeleTech's vice president and general manager Maulik Parekh said Dumagueteños are among the most hard working people in the country.
He said many people from other places as far as Cagayan de Oro City have been applying to work at TeleTech-Dumaguete because of its good working environment.
Parekh said he has observed that most residents do not want to find a job in the city. House of Silvanas was born out of Mary Ann Sagarbarria's love of baking. When Mary Ann tied the knot with Cholong Sagarbarria in 1971 her mother-in-law Trinidad Teves-Sagarbarria, who owned Sans Rival, a popular bakeshop in the city of Dumaguete, shared with her several pastry recipes. She learned, among others, how to make sans rival.
When Mary Ann moved to Manila with her family in 1978, her delicious sans rival became an instant favorite within their circle of friends. Before long, she found herself making sans rival for the parties of her friends and acquaintances and, later on, even strangers.
While orders for sans rival came pouring in, her interest in baking grew even more. She experimented with original recipes, created a number of her own and modified some of them. After some changes in the recipe of her mother-in-law, Mary Ann started offering silvanas (a pastry similar to sans rival, except that it's in cookie form) to her clients. As with sans rival, the silvanas became a big hit.
Through word of mouth, the business continued to grow even as it remained home based until 1995, when it opened its first outlet in Metro Manila. "The decision to establish the first House of Silvanas came after we received a lot of complaints from the San Lorenzo Village Association about the traffic caused by our home-based business, especially during the holidays," Mary Ann, owner of House of Silvanas, recalled.
The opening of the first House of Silvanas triggered a chain reaction that led to the expansion of the business to several shopping malls throughout Metro Manila. And to satisfy the cravings of Filipinos in Southern California, House of Silvanas opened its first branch in Torrance and second branch in Carson, where they offer seven flavors of silvanas; ensaimada; sans rival; brownies; honey, nelusko, ube and chocolate cakes; lemon squares; food for the gods; mango bars; polvoron; yemas; black bottoms; and a whole lot more.
Mary Ann's children also have taken interest in the family business. The eldest daughter, Tricia, heads the Manila branches while Kay, the youngest daughter, is the head baker and partners with Mary Ann and Cholong, managing the southern California branches. Their eldest son, Don, heads the Carson branch. The youngest son Manu and wife Crissy Cantada-Sagarbarria opened their own House of Silvanas branch in Daly City, the first northern California branch.

I got up early this morning to take my long overdue hike at the Boulevard. I haven’t been diligent in keeping fit and quite frankly need to shed some pounds. Much to my surprise I was not the only one intending to do so – there were hikers, bikers and joggers plying my same route all of whom were gracious enough to flash a smile or two, a typical pleasing Dumagueteño attitude. Ah, the City of Gentle People…
The Boulevard is fantastic in the early mornings, just as it is at night. At 5 o’clock the road is deserted save for a few motor cabs and vehicles perhaps just about to head home -- remnants of a wild night in party town? I savor the whiff of salty air and the wind on my hair. Too bad I didn’t get the sunrise. I’ll be sure to come a bit earlier next time.
Later on that morning, as I passed along Le Chalet, a comfy café and restaurant in Why Not Musicbox building, I noticed their catchy breakfast sign. Tourists were already milling around, some having their breakfast fill, some just sipping coffee while watching the world go by. What better way to start the day! I’m going in now… and why not indeed?
What I like most about Why Not is not the coffee but the very courteous waitresses who are more than willing to attend to your every whim. They are well mannered and polite and they can converse fairly in English. I was served my Continental breakfast made up of a not-so-little glass of refreshingly cold orange juice, butter, jam (their mango jam is sumptuous), fresh fruit and warm rye bread just taken out from the oven. I am careful not to wolf it all down lest I defeat my pound shedding intentions…
At the Why Not Musicbox bulletin board, you see a lot of postings of properties for sale or for rent -- whether house and/or lot or vehicles and other interesting valuables. You might want to check it out. Who knows what you might find?
While you’re there, you can go to the internet station for a quick check on your mail. Or you may want to do some internet browsing too. There is a very minimal fixed hourly rate and the room is fully airconditioned. And this is just one of Musicbox's many traveler-friendly amenities.
Was it the hike or the breakfast? I felt particularly recharged that morning but couldn’t quite distinguish from what source. Perhaps the exercise did well in revving up my metabolism and the breakfast, in satisfying my gastronomic cravings. A hike at the Boulevard and continental breakfast at Le Chalet: perfect combination!

http://www.dumagueteinfo.com/news/cebupacific.jpg
Cebu Pacific, the country’s low fare leader and leading domestic airline, will add a second daily frequency to its Manila-Dumaguete service beginning February 14, 2007

It is the most popular hangout for tourists because of its location and its amenities. It has evolved from once being the city’s trendiest hotel and restaurant circa 1970 to today’s modern hot spot featuring a discotheque, several bars, a game room, a karaoke bar, an internet café. It also houses a deli with a wide selection of freshly baked pastries and bread, imported wine, cheese and cold cuts. Why Not Music Box is your one stop shop for your fine dining and entertainment needs. Right across it is the well-loved boulevard where one can take a stroll or sit on the benches to enjoy the sea at anytime of the day.

The newest addition to the city’s nightlife vista, this bar and restaurant is the classic urban hub. It is a relatively small place but boasts of cozy little nooks complete with small throw pillows in stark solid colors. White washed walls are bathed in neon lights which give a modern dramatic take on the atmosphere. The beverage list is quite impressive from the regular beer to flavored coffee and metropolitan drinks. The Compuesto Lounge is a taste of avant-garde living in a provincial setting.

But why is this thread so quiet. I think all the people are busy celebrating Christams. As I fill up this thread am in the City of Bayawan with some friends...Hmm, Bayawan is growing really fast. The lights at the Bayawan City Boulevard is really spectacular. I hope I could get hold of a digital cam and post some pics of the City of Bayawan here.

Coffee December 27th, 2006, 03:49 PM They're putting up a big wall around the Robinsons construction area. For now it's only blocking the view from Teletech. Let's hope that they don't block the view from the highway too. :)
nicko December 27th, 2006, 05:09 PM ^^ y wud they do that?.. anyway, the target opening date of Robinsons is November 2007 in time of Dgte's fiesta as what my dad said. do u think its going to happen considering the pace of work and the size of the mall? its going to be january so they only have 11 more months to go..
WawaY[625] December 27th, 2006, 05:34 PM mabilis na ang construction ng malls ngayon, NCCC Mall here in Davao was built in less than a year ( left davao june '03 and nasa foundation pa, by Decemeber '03 open na, and this isnt a small mall at that, its a 4 level, 86,000sqm mall) so i think Robinsons Dumaguete will be finished by november, dont worry :)
Gibb December 28th, 2006, 06:17 AM what's new there in dumaguete? it's been 1.5 years since i was there.
nicko December 28th, 2006, 09:27 AM a lot.. u have to check it for urself.. or just scan through the pages of dumaguete threads.. its all there..;) happy new year kentaro..
ND-USA December 28th, 2006, 05:54 PM Yup, a city of 100,000 people... a province of 1,100,000 people... not a single traffic light. Then again, most of the streets in the downtown area are too narrow to really make good use of a traffic light. I remember there used to be a traffic light in Tanjay City (a city ~30km north of Dumaguete), but I guess they removed it because it just wasn't necessary.
rmb: I'm from Valencia. :)
Hey,Coffee do you still love Dumaguete? I am from that place and I really miss it a lot. No matter what you say about the streets in that place it doesn't embarass me. I graduated from Silliman and am now residing here in the USA but to be honest with you I really love my hometown Dumaguete City.
ND-USA December 28th, 2006, 05:56 PM 500!!!!!
Hi there! I miss my home town
ritche December 29th, 2006, 07:53 AM Guys, what do you wish to be at the Robinsons mall here? For me I wish they'd have a Starbucks, Figaro, or any other world class coffee shop, a lounge area, a large activity and trade area, a decent bookstore, a large hardware, a huge supermarket, etc.
