jundem_dq63 April 13th, 2011, 08:25 PM Philippines: Aviation Training-One International Graduates 37 Students
The Aviation Training-One International, (http://www.avtraining1.com), located in Dumaguete Airport Sibulan, Negros Oriental, Philippines has just graduated 37 students in aircraft maintenance technology, among them are two female students.
Speaking during the colorful 1st Commencement Exercises held in Joshua 1, Bethel Guest House, Dumaguete City, Philippines, on April 12, 2011, the guest speaker, Engr. Samuel A. Jordan admonished the graduating students to see their job as a very critical one and therefore need not to bypass their procedure manuals.
He noted that for the graduates to be competent, they should ensure that their training does not stop at the training they’ve just gone through adding that there is every need for them to internalize work value as they practice their profession.
Engr. Jordan encouraged the graduating students to be quality conscious as that leads to customers’ satisfaction adding that they should strive to be punctual hence punctuality is the respect for the time of others, them and their co-workers.
He also pointed out on the need to be very productive in their profession as productivity is a good order in house-keeping, “There should be personal order, which is observed by following a sequence is very essential.”
On the need for proper dress code, he said that an air-craft maintenance technician must dress properly, hence skilled workers are looked upon very well in developed world and that they need to practice that as they go about their duties.
He stated: “The way you think determines the person you are. If you think good and look good, you are not far from success. Jesus Christ said, ‘I have come to serve, not to be served.’”
It needs to be pointed out that Aviation Training-One International was founded in 1998, and that the academy focuses in training pilots for corporate and airline companies around the globe. That since 1998, the institution focuses in training pilots for corporate and airline companies around the globe.
The academy’s expansion program implemented in January 2007 was aimed at providing more training programs for pilots, flight dispatchers, aircraft maintenance technicians, cabin crew, and aviation department managers.
Through the years of on-going development, it has had a continuous involvement with airline companies, aviation experts, and consultants, several programs are provided to cater the needs of the aviation industry for pilots, flight dispatchers, aircraft maintenance technicians, cabin crew, and aviation department managers.
Further to that, it is the only school approved by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to use “Pilot training” call sign on its radiotelephony instead of the common aircraft’s tail number or registry number.
And the objective are to maintain a unique distinction between the academy’s flight training operations and other aircraft in the airspace system, and to also increase situational awareness to other air traffic that the aircraft using “Pilot training” call sign is operated under flight training operations.
The academy had purchased a 1979 Cessna 152 Aerobat with 1,600.0 hours since new both on the airframe and powerplant. The trainer is specifically for spins and upset recovery training for students and flight instructor applicants. Basic aerobatic instruction is also provided in the Cessna 152 Aerobat.
Again, the inception of having a Cessna 152 Aerobat started when the school director, Dan Bahinting, became a student of William K. Kershner, an author and an aviation legend. He was encouraged to own an aerobat; therefore, it was a great honor to have one maintaining the legacy of his mentor.

hotsypatutsy April 14th, 2011, 07:08 AM P500M circumferential road set
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE
Mayor Manuel Sagarbarria said the construction of the P500 million proposed circumferential road project in Metro Dumaguete is already “in the bag.”
Sagarbarria was quoted as saying that by his planning officer Josephine Antonio after they presented the project before top officers of the National Development Company in Manila last week.
The proposed 15-kilometer circumferential road that will traverse the municipalities of Bacong, Sibulan and Dumaguete city has reportedly been approved by the NDC after it was approved by the Regional Development Council and the National Economic Development Authority, its funding mechanics are reportedly threshed out.
Sagarbarria said NDC representatives are coming to make a final presentation of the proposed project to Bacong and Sibulan which are expected to share in the burden of compensating owners of properties to be affected by the opening of the 20-meter wide circumferential road in their jurisdictions.
Dumaguete needs about P160 million to pay for the road-right-of-way, Bacong around P30 million and Sibulan P50 million plus, Sagabarria said.
For this the NDC will borrow $15 million US to be loaned out to the LGUs concerned.
If plans do not miscarry, the project is hoped to be in full swing in January 2012 and completed in 2013.
Sagarbarria said the circumferential or diversion road is definitely the solution to traffic congestion in the city, like in other big cities of the country. The plan was hatched in the previous administration of the late mayor and Gov. Tuting Perdices, of which Sagarbarria was a councilor.*JG
Alinghi April 14th, 2011, 08:39 AM Dumaguete Day 1
Dumaguete. On the southern coast of Negros. How cool can this be cover football and travel?
Took Philippines Airlines Flight PR 291 which was the first flight out of Manila. I took the opportunity to finish Marcus Luttrell’s Sole Survivor which is a book about a US Navy SEAL unit that was attacked by the Taliban up in the Korengal mountains of Afghanistan.
The flight’s about an hour and it wasn’t so pleasant with all the turbulence so I was real happy when we touched down at Sibulan Airport in Dumaguete at 8am. The site was still climbing and there were lots of people at the airport.
Red Avelino who is with me for the flight told me that the city was small and that if you wanted to go from one location to another, you’d be there in a jiffy.
“Not bad, I thought. “That makes it easier to get around.”
What I love about touring the provinces is seeing the old Spanish or American sites that seem better preserved than their Manila counterparts. As a history buff and someone deeply interested in our colonial past, I chafe at our inability to take care of artifacts and historical sites.
I first checked in my hotel the C&L Suites Inn which is just at the corner of the city plaza. Red is in the opposite block at the Maria Luisa Inn. He’s luckier coz they’ve got wifi. Mine? You have to go to the coffee shop for that so it’s either you use your broadband or go to the nearby McDonald’s for the free use.
I settled down, checked some email. Then headed out. As I crossed the street, I saw the old belfry that was built during the Spanish times to warn the populace of approaching pirates. There was a shrine to the Blessed Virgin at the foot of it and many Catholic faithful were there lighting candles and saying their prayers. I did too then snapped some pics. I wanted to go inside the St. Catherine Cathedral but Red was waiting for me at McDonald’s for breakfast. Even before I entered, I noticed that there were a lot of Americans. I had a feeling that these were former servicemen who were assigned to either Clark Air Base of Subic Naval Base and had decided to make Dumaguete their home (it was cheaper and laid back). Turns out I was right, but it also drew it’s share of tourists aside from other retired military men who were assigned to Korea or elsewhere.
After breakfast, we had a meeting with a local football official.
Oh, I’m here as Media Officer for the PFF Suzuki U-23 Cup and this was the Visayas regional’s leg. It’s already rated as the most exciting of the tourney with Iloilo, Bacolod, Leyte, Negros Occidental, and Negros Oriental (the Dumaguete team) competing for the right to advance to the semis.
Five members of the Philippine Men’s National Team will be arriving on Friday to join the motorcade in the afternoon. The city of over 100,000 seems stoked about this.
I was wearing my old national team t-shirt (not the jersey) and Red said that people were looking at it. Haha.
After a couple of meetings we head over to the Silliman football field to inspect the pitch as well as the nearby Mariano Perdices field that had some 400-500 kids playing football! It was an incredible site. While I see that in Ateneo during the AFC, this one reminded me of the time I went to Sta. Barbara and Barotac Nuevo in Iloilo. I wish that I had a video camera for this.
As it is, Dumaguete is like a “University town” with several big schools located here. I am told that the when school is in, there are some 30,000-plus students here.
At the meeting, we prepared the agenda for the press conference and the opening ceremony where city, PFF, and Suzuki officials would be in attendance.
We skipped lunch since we had a late breakfast and come late afternoon, we were real hungry so we went to Kamalig with Coach Butod who is such a fun guy to be with. He is the General Secretary of NORFA – the Negros Oriental Football Association. He remembers each and every one of his games with amazing clarity and detail.
I ask who the local football greats are and he quickly fires off names – Percy Guarin, Noel Arevalo, Gee Asis and more. Then there were the more familiar names – Marlon Maro (who has coached De La Salle and the College of Saint Benilde), Edwin Cabalida (Ateneo, Air Force, and Azkals assistant), Roroy Pinero (Foundation University and some of those old teams in Manila), and Al Bustamante and Federico Rabaya both who currently play for Hans Smit over at DLSU.I heard that Coach Hans loved Dumaguete. I wonder why, coach.
Incidentally, Coach Edwin and Roroy are here while the national team is on break. We bumped in Roroy in Perdices Field. And later, the Iloilo team coached by UST’s Marjo Allado arrives. We talk by the bleachers as I say hi to some familiar faces.
We were supposed to walk going back to our respective hotels by walking along Rizal Boulevard that they have nicknamed “The Boulevard of Broken Dreams” because many people go there to propose and such. The promenade is lovely and reminds me of Roxas Boulevard before Alfredo Lim evicted the supposedly non-paying stall owners. It faces Tañon Strait and it sure makes a nice sight late in the afternoon. The establishments on the opposite side of the road remind me of Boracay. They even have a Cocomangas here! Along the promenade, I saw the many stalls and chairs with hawkers selling tempura and such. I wanted to snap some pictures but with night setting in, I decided to come back another day and instead head back to the hotel to check my email and prepare for the following day’s press conference. By 9pm I dozed off.

By 9pm I dozed off.

draude April 15th, 2011, 05:11 AM ERC to decide on power rates (http://www.visayandailystar.com/2011/April/14/negor3.htm)
The Energy Regulatory Commission is expected to decide in 20 days after the expository hearing and public consultation of Green Core’s request for provisional authority to collect the rates stipulated in the contract with the Negros Oriental 2 Electric Cooperative here in Dumaguete City.
The electric cooperative signed a contract with Green Core effective December 25, 2010to buy 25 megawatts of power at P5.03 centavos per kilowatthour as base load for Dumaguete and the other 16 megawatts from Kepco in Cebu.
ERC commissioner Jose Reyes presided over the hearing attached by stakeholders, top officials of GreenCore and the Negros Oriental Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The results will be presented to the ERC for action.
The contracted price is P5.03 per kilowatt hour and the cooperative will get a 3.2 percent prompt payment discount it is to pay Greencore’s billings within five days, finance officer Dionefred Macahig said.
From January to March this year, the cooperative has promptly paid Greencore an average of P62 million per month, earning a discount between P2 million to P2.5 million.
Macahig said half of the discount will go back to the end-users in terms of lowering the generation costs.
NORECO 2 is still paying the “time-of-use” rates by Napocor pending the approval by ERC of the provisional authority filed by GreenCore.*JG

The 2 Negros provinces...we were the first to win a national championship outside of NCR while Negros Occidental has the most win for any provincial team...Iloilo did not win any national championship yet, the reason why I was surprised they would always claim to be the "football capital of the Philippines"...

I think somehow Iloilo could be righteous to claim that title because seven Ilonggo natives from Iloilo, namely Ian Araneta, Yanti Bersales, Mark Ferrer, Chip Caligdong, Noel Gener, Joven Bermejo, and Nestor Magarce are members of team Philippines. Then, Paulino Alcantara, the first Filipino and Asian player to play for a European club, was from Iloilo. And Mariano Araneta, the president of Football Federation, is from Iloilo. Maybe, somehow this can give some idea, why Iloilo could also claim that title. Even, Jessica Soho mentioned that in one of her segments in Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho...

I think we can claim that we are also football crazy town and at par with Iloilo and Bacolod. We were multi-champs of Coke Go for Goal and we were National champs once and been in the final 4 many times. The last time I can remember was early 2000. We were so strong before that 3 of those players became National coaches (Piñero, Cabalida, Maro).

ritche April 16th, 2011, 03:30 AM I was told that the new IT Park near St Paul's will still be occupied by Qualfon...Although it is an improvement nevertheless, but not really a good portent for our IT industry as it will mean that salaries will still be cheap, and we are not going to inch up in the IT industry soon...And it will mean that many of our human resources will still be going to other places to look for greener pastures...

nicko April 16th, 2011, 06:50 AM I was told that the new IT Park near St Paul's will still be occupied by Qualfon...Although it is an improvement nevertheless, but not really a good portent for our IT industry as it will mean that salaries will still be cheap, and we are not going to inch up in the IT industry soon...And it will mean that many of our human resources will still be going to other places to look for greener pastures...
Is the info coming from a reliable source? Thats just sad... Sayang ang new IT Park. Well, if it's going to be true, I hope that there is also going to be another brand of BPO that will occupy the park aside from Qualfon.
ritche April 16th, 2011, 07:04 AM Another brand would have been good...But as I see it now, the city is again going to monopoly, or duopoly...Ventus is gone and only SPi Global is there, and now we can see a super-Qualfon in our midst...I mean analyzing it am quite afraid because this would be hard for other companies to come in...and for these super companies to dictate the rates here...Lately I have been analyzing the situation (they have said we have hit it big in the BPO industry, but for me it's actually the contrary) and we have actually lagged compared to other cities.
True, one big callcenter company keeps coming back month after month, but I don't see them setting up here in the short term. I mean they will still be poaching our people and we would have to provide them with our well trained professionals, and we will still be getting the smaller companies, and that's the scenario now..As I see it now, I have grown quite discontented with the way the IT industry is being managed...And its implications to our education sector.
ritche April 16th, 2011, 07:12 AM Philippines to Attract Foreign “Silver Market”
RP as a retirement haven to be featured in IMWell Summit
The world is aging. For the first time in history, the old will outnumber the young. But ‘Global Aging’ will not only come with challenges-for some countries, it will come with big economic opportunities. The Philippines could become a major player for medical travel and retirement with the emergence of this global demographic trend.
In light of this scenario, the Philippines will be hosting the International Summit on Medical Travel, Wellness and Retirement (IMWell Summit) on October 12-15, 2010 at the Makati Shangri-La Hotel. Staged in collaboration with Asian players that include India, Thailand, Malaysia, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore, the IMWell Summit is envisioned to be a forum for different countries to hold multilateral dialogues and discuss how they can cooperate for the region to further develop the medical tourism and retirement industry. A major part of the IMWell Summit will also focus on international retirement migration and how Asian countries (and the foreign retirees) will be able to benefit from it.
“I believe that the Philippines could become one of the major destinations for the fast growing Silver Market. The country offers the combination of services in the sector of tourism, wellness, healthcare and medical services which are pillars for a comfortable retirement”, said Henry Schumacher, Chairman of the Retirement and Healthcare Coalition and EVP of the European Chamber.
The Retirement and Healthcare Coalition (RHC), composed of the European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (ECCP), American Chamber, Japanese Chamber, and Korean Chamber, promotes the Philippines as a second home and as a retirement destination.
In 2008, RHC presented five destinations that are most suitable for retirement: Manila, Cebu, Clark/Subic, Dumaguete, and Tagaytay. The selection of these locations was based mainly on easy access to amenities such as high-quality medical centers, health and wellness facilities, leisure and sports facilities, commercial establishments, good infrastructure and housing units at competitive rates.
“The Philippines has a lot to offer for foreign retirees. Here they can enjoy a more pleasant climate, upgrade their lifestyle with lower investment and daily cost. With 7,107 islands the Philippines is not only a beach destination, but it has a lot more to offer. Recreation, golf, diving, wellness, spa and shopping are just a few of the things a retiree can enjoy here”, says Marc Daubenbuechel, Project Manager of RHC.
Manila alone has a lot to offer for a retiree, with a wide range of shopping malls around the Central Business District, outdoor activities such as golf and polo, and parks or a walk along Manila bay where one can enjoy Manila’s sunset. Like Manila, Cebu, another choice retirement destination, offers a large collection of shopping malls, restaurants, entertainment centers. And if the city is getting too much, there are the white sandy beaches and some of the world’s best dive sites within reach.
Alternatively, Clark/Subic, Dumaguete and Tagaytay offer a different kind of retirement destination. From Dumaguete’s spectacular coral reefs and marine wildlife, to Tagaytay’s panoramic view of Taal Volcano with a much cooler climate and Subic’s beaches and jungle safaris, the choices for the retirees are endless. Retirees can relax and enjoy their golden years in the Philippines.

draude April 16th, 2011, 10:29 AM Smoke free ordinance ok’d (http://www.visayandailystar.com/2011/April/16/negor3.htm)
Negros Oriental’s dream of becoming a smoke-free province is becoming attainable with the addition of Dumaguete City as the sixth local government unit in the province to enact an ordinance regulating the use, sale, distribution and advertisement of cigarettes and other tobacco products.
The smoke-free ordinance authored by Councilor Joe Kenneth Arabas said it is aimed at protecting city constituents from the harmful effects of smoking and tobacco consumption was unanimously approved on third and final reading during its regular session today.
Present during the approval of the smoke-free ordinance were LGU advocates headed by Mayor Bentham dela Cruz of Amlan, the first town to adopt Provincial Ordiannce No. 6, Mayor Dyanggo Uy of Mabinay, Mayor Edsel Enardecido of Ayungon, Mayor Kit Mark Adanza of Zamboanguita, and Mayor Ricky Gonzales of Valencia.
The mayors praised the city council headed by Vice Mayor Alan Gel Cordova for approving the ordinance. Placard-bearing students of the Negros Maritime College Foundation, Inc. lead by Capt Edith Vera came in full force to support it.
The mayors said, smokers are treated as victims rather than violators.*JG
jundem_dq63 April 16th, 2011, 11:34 AM OK ra na oi....kay nag tuo pud mo nga ang convergys dagko ug sweldo?.....dili oi... I have friend working in CVG Cebu... iyang offer was 15K only...... and another friend/workmate, the same offer iyang gi turn down ang offer kay same ra sa iyang salary kung mag work siya as SPi Global..naa pa siya sa dgte....
Infairness to qualfon...dako sila ug sweldo as compared to Teletech..... and close to Student Universe...... pero lower than RUFUS and Zero One Concept.......
We can't also blame our Government kung gi package nila ang Dumaguete City as the small and cheap City...kay as far as I can remember Mr Dael told us before in a meeting....we back in 2004 nalisod sila ug convince sa mga BPO companies to come to Dumaguete City.....Maayo na lang kay SPi grab the opportunity sa package nga 6 days work with a minimum salary (City Rate) as entry level etc and etc......
Then Teletech, Student Universe, Students Only, Virtual Support, Qualfon and many others follow......
Do you think na kung gipackage na before parehas sa Cebu and Manila naa mo sulod na BPO?.....Always remember nga 5 years plus pa lang ta nagka BPO diri sa Dumaguete....
Maybe ma change lang niya pero hinay hinay lang...ayaw mo pagdali.....dili na siya Instant coffee nga pwedi ra diretsohon butang ug tubig mainon na dayon.....3rd class pa baya ta....niya na ug ma HUC na ta....Patience is a virtue......
Kung ganahan sila ug higher pay...then go to RUFUS, Zero One Concept and Student Universe..... naay daghan options...or SPI Global Journals....as Copyeditors.......SPI Global CRM.....daghan baya......
Let's start from a very beginning a very good place to start....a line taken from one of the songs in Sound of Music......:lol::lol::lol:

DUMAGUETE CITY, Apr. 16 (PIA) -- Pres. Benigno S. Aquino III recently appointed former Dumaguete City Mayor and Silliman University (SU) Alumnus Atty. Felipe Antonio Remollo as President and Chief Executive Officer of the Clark Development Corporation (CDC).
CDC is the administrative and governing body of the Clark Freeport Zone, a 2,500-hectare modern aviation complex touted as the country’s future premier gateway site.
Aside from Remollo, the President has also appointed Cezar Villanueva, dean at the Ateneo de Manila Law School, as chariman of the board.
A statement from SU said Atty. Remollo, a Silliman alumnus, is also an incoming member of the university's Board of Trustees.
He obtained from Silliman University his High School Diploma in 1977 and a degree in Political Science which he graduated with magna cum laude in 1981.
Remollo is currently Senior Vice President of Prudential Guarantee & Assurance Inc., one of the largest non-life insurance companies in the Philippines. (RMN/PIA Negros Oriental)

KAYAKING
In the mountains of southern Negros Island, 12 km west of the town of Sibulan, Negros Oriental peacefully lie the captivating Lake Balinsasayao and its twin lake, equally breathtaking Lake Danao. One of the major tourist attractions in the province, Lake Balinsasayao is a protected Natural Park, home to an expansive ecosystem and great biodiversity.
These are deep crater freshwater lakes rising 1000 feet above sea level and separated by a narrow mountain ridge. The Twin Lakes of Balinsasayao is also the habitat of many birds and animals, some of which are also rare. Activities include swimming, fishing, boating, trekking and kayaking.
The area is surrounded by lush tropical greens and vegetation. Age old trees, giant ferns and other exotic plants and orchids are among its natural inhabitants. Wild rare vines freely cling to the barks of the trees. The Almagica Tree, the tallest tree of the Philippines growing up to 60 meters tall, can still be found here and it is also the habitat of many rare species.
The lake is teeming with fish making it an ideal fishing ground. The calm waters also make it perfect for swimming, boating and kayaking or just sitting under one of the small huts to take in the view and the fresh mountain air.

City clears sidewalks of ambulant vendors
By Juancho Gallarde
• Sun, Apr 17, 2011
Ambulant vendors in the commercial district of Dumaguete City were rounded up this week by three teams of the Task Force Special Action Group Advocating Rapid Reform (SAGARR).
Task Force ground commander and City Administrator William Ablong said this was done to solve the perennial problem of ambulant vending and clogged sidewalks in the City.
In a briefing before the activity by Task Force SAGARR, Ablong stressed to its members that they must observe due process, respect the rights of vendors, do their tasks with compassion, ensure that no physical harm is done, and that there will be no confiscation and destruction of the vendors’ wares and belongings.
The ambulant vendors had been informed at an earlier City Council session of their previous violations, and had been warned that the next time they were apprehended, charges would be filed against them.
After their appearance at the City Council, some vendors expressed interest to cooperate with government and eagerness to legalize their operation by applying for Mayor’s Permits to conduct business.
One of the team leaders of Task Force SAGARR, Joey Abella of the City Legal Office, explained that the ambulant vendors had violated the Omnibus Tax Code of Dumaguete, and were caught blocking the sidewalks. He said their style of doing business was unfair to those regularly renewing their Mayor’s Permits and paying taxes to the government.

P17M set aside for hospital equipment upgrade
By Rachelle Nessia
• Sun, Apr 17, 2011
Recognizing the dire need to upgrade the facilities at the Bayawan City District Hospital, Negros Oriental Gov. Roel Degamo has allocated a total of P17 million for the purchase of hospital equipment and building renovation.
The Bayawan District Hospital is a secondary level hospital with 125 beds, and is currently undermanned.
By upgrading the Bayawan City District Hospital, Degamo said he believes this will help address the congestion problem at the Negros Oriental Provincial Hospital as patients from the southern part of the Province will no longer have to travel all the way to Dumaguete to seek medical help.
Bayawan is a fifth class component City, 102 kilometers south of the Province’s capital where NOPH is located. (RMN/PIA-7 Negros Oriental)

Dumaguete: Summer Workshop Capital of the Philippines
By Moses Joshua Atega
• Sun, Apr 17, 2011
It’s summer! Time to bring the family to Dumaguete, the Summer Workshop Capital of the Philippines!
While Mom and Dad will be in a romantic hop from one waterfalls to another, their talented young son is sitting down as a fellow at the oldest creative writing workshop in Asia – this legacy of National Artist Edith Lopez Tiempo and her late husband Doc Ed which is turning 50 years old this May. Or their daughter can be in Guy Hall taking piano lessons, or maybe at Aquacenter for swimming. And while the youngest daughter is learning the basics in ballet, Grandma can keep herself busy with her own painting lessons under an internationally recognized visual artist Kitty Taniguchi.
Come witness Philippine ethnomusicology pioneer and Asia’s first Certified McClosky Voice Technician Priscilla Magdamo Abraham together with prolific Music Education author Dr. Elizabeth Susan Dimaya Vista Suarez as they mount again pioneering programs in Voice and Choral Music Education.
Flash those DSLRs at the best Photography workshop under the busiest king of images Greg Morales as he leads you to iconic subjects to be captured and the beautiful landscapes all over will be the harvest in your every frame. Or go beyond multimedia workshop under the multi-talented Hersley-Ven Casero of Foundation University.
Write the green spirit in your child’s heart with lessons in biodiversity and garbage recycling within a butterfly garden in St. Paul University. Bring the entire local government force and get the green wisdom directly from Dr. Angel C. Alcala, the world’s father in Coastal Resources Management.
Before your trip abroad, hit the gentle Dumaguete road with driving lessons and other skills training doable in short term arrangements at Negros Oriental State University.
Meet Ate Ely, Kuya Jar with Ate Shawee, Ate Edna and the rest of the big brothers and big sisters at Oriental Hall who are the best facilitators in town for team building and other corporate human resource development programs. For an inner journey and peace of mind, there is always the listening power of Dr. Margret Helen Udarbe Alvarez, Dr. Betsy Joy B. Tan and Dr. Noel Yasi.
Then, back to Guy Hall for more of the amazing Visual Arts explorations with two of Dumaguete’s most prolific art educators Yvette Malahay Kim and Jutze Pamate. Art-talk with Jutze and be overwhelmed by his almost never-ending stories and go home a walking almanac of the journey to the golden age of Renaissance and beyond.
Take a break from your computer game and check out the College of Mass Communication and the College of Computer Studies of Silliman University now opening new windows for young talents to learn the basics in journalism, broadcasting and computer graphic design.
Theater world in Dumaguete is another rewarding workshop as the stage queen Dessa Quezada Palm makes it a tool to make young talents become fully aware of their potential as community builders. Anticipate the actor in you come out of the workshop with a sensitivity to the call of the times.
The list is endless with all the workshop weeks to conquer and the nature trips to keep the family and guardians busy in waiting games.
But then something seems not in sync with the knowledge revolution, and it pains me that Summer in Dumaguete will be capped with this mediocre production called Kabulakan. What with all of those celluloid blooms and paper roses in May compared to Baguio’s Panagbenga and Davao’s Kadayawan? No wonder we hear tourists getting frustrated of the promise of a “Mayflower” experience vaguely realized under the heat of a summer sun. I can’t blame them — Dumaguete’s Kabulakan’s historical dimension and cultural value are without strong foundations.
Don’t get me wrong, I have much respect for the organizers and am one with them in giving tribute to the late Manolit Teves, Dumaguete’s Renaissance man, whose ideas and presence were the moving force in this festival. But I believe that the best way to honor the man is to move on and make his idea a kind of point of departure. A workshop on festival management is a must to develop what really belongs to Dumaguete and this University Town is so rich with resource persons on history and creative production. I really think that Kabulakan will have a better version if mounted in Valencia, Oriental Negros, the capital of blooms. Dumaguete’s “dagit” origin can be explored and I am confident that the brainstorm will have a fruitful harvest that we all can celebrate.
As of now, let’s just join hands in letting the whole world know that this University Town is the Summer Workshop Capital of the country. Family tours will then be flooding and our business community will be in their own productive workshops of food, fun jams, fares and flares!

^^^^
Aside from being the Artist Haven, the most featured city in the country and the best tourist destination in the country, Next wave City, University town, City of Gentle People etc and etc....we now have the newest title for Dumaguete City.....Dumaguete: Summer Workshop Capital of the Philippines
I am really proud to be a Dumagueteño™. :banana::banana::banana:

ritche April 19th, 2011, 04:48 AM I got info that Qualfon wants to grow to a humongous size here (as in humongous size), so there's a possibility that the 3rd IT Park will only be Qualfon Business Park...There is a plus and bad side to it. The good side is that it shows the confidence of the company to our city, enough that they want to grow to that size that they want. On the other hand, and this is what I am really concerned about, is that it will discourage other companies from coming in. And for me, Qualfon is an unrated company and having them on humongous basis might distort the further growth of the IT industry here.
Well, I just hope that they improve their reputation as they build more in our city. And this is what I really hope, that they will recruit more from other cities so our human resources will not be tied up to them, and we will be bringing fresh talents from other places. And I hope they will not discourage other companies from coming in so there will be growth and maturity in our local IT industry. And our hope of bringing in the more established and bigger companies will not be dashed to pieces...

CANYONING
Canyoning is traveling in canyons using a variety of techniques that may include other outdoor activities such as walking, scrambling, climbing, jumping, abseiling, and/or swimming. Although hiking down a canyon that is non-technical (canyon hiking) is often referred to as canyoneering, the terms canyoning and canyoneering are more often associated with technical descents — those that require abseils (rappels) and ropework, technical climbing or down-climbing, technical jumps, and/or technical swims.
Canyons that are ideal for canyoning are often cut into the bedrock stone, forming narrow gorges with numerous drops, beautifully sculpted walls, and sometimes spectacular waterfalls.
One such waterfall is Pulangbato Falls which is located in the Ocoy Valley in the town of Valencia Negros Oriental. It is aptly named so because of the waterfall’s seemingly red river water which is caused by the presence of natural reddish rocks found in the area. Pula is the native word for red while bato, for rock. Thus, if interpreted, the name would be red rock.
Like many other waterfalls, swimming lagoons and pools in the town of Valencia, Pulangbato Falls is blessed with calm and refreshing waters. This is mainly because of Valencia’s geography – 60% of its land composition being hilly and mountainous – that the climatic temperature is always moderate to cool.
Pulangbato Falls has a wide cascade. The water pours down into a swimming hole that is also deep enough for high dives. Enthusiasts clamber up to a nearby rock that functions as a diving point and free fall into the water basin. The shape of Pulangbato Falls has been considered unique because of its layered structure. At the first tier, the cascade begins narrowly and widens progressively as it moves down the next levels. At a distance, the waterfalls look triangular in shape.
It is also the color of the water in Pulangbato Falls that makes it more special. It appears to be red but quickly turns clear once taken out from the river. It must be only a reflection of the red rock formations that make up most of the landscape. Surrounding the waterfall is thick foliage of wild plants and vegetation coupled with some trees. The ambience is rather calming in an unsophisticated kind of way because of the impression of being far from civilization.

They should have used the money to pay for improving the actual road instead of making this huge useless arch. Whoever thought of constructing this thing should be fired.
The land where this road cuts through was donated to the city by the Gothongs of Cebu. I suppose they paid for the pailou as well.

btw, the Chinese pailou at Gothong Avenue was funded by the Gothong family, but it was the City Govt. which supervised the construction.
the sad and sorry state of Gothong Avenue is really tragic for an economically-booming and tourist-attracting Dumaguete :ohno:
marshy land + overloaded container trucks passing/parking 24/7 + lack of maintenance = a road from hell :ohno:

When the road was created, te Gothongs' donated land for the road on condition that the road be nmed after them. That was never followed through, so they built that structure to make sure it's nown as Gothong st. For me it will always be Looc bypass though.
The Intsik writing translated says 'The Way Of Study', according to a Chinese Malaysian friend who passed by here one time.
This picture also shows how bad the road is in. The picture is clear, but look at the streaks of light from the car lights; klaro kaayo nilukso ang mga sakyanan kay niagi sila sa mga batsi.

draude April 20th, 2011, 04:12 AM Phil. Army 11th IB now accepting scholarship applicants (http://www.pia.gov.ph/?m=1&t=1&id=28208)
DUMAGUETE CITY, April 18 (PIA) -- The 11th Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army 3rd Infantry Division based in Guihulngan City, Negros Oriental is now accepting applicants for its scholarship program for school year 2011-2012.
Six qualified students will be selected for full scholarship and one special scholar at the Negros Oriental State University (NORSU), the only state university in the province.
Full scholars will enjoy free tuition fees, free board and lodging and allowance while special scholars will receive free tuition fees only for the duration of their scholarship.
Interested applicants may ask for the application forms directly at the 11IB headquarters at Brgy. McKinley, Guihulngan City after which they will be scheduled for interview, said 11IB Civil Military Operation Officer 1Lt. Angelito Luna in an interview.
As of this writing, Luna said they have already interviewed 50 students who are applying for the scholarship in far-flung areas in Guihulngan.
Deadline for applications is tentatively set on April 30, as Luna said the entrance tests at NORSU is scheduled on the first week of May.
Said scholarship is under the 11th IB's Lapu-Lapu Educational Assistance Program (LEAP) created to fulfill 11th IB's social responsibility to the residents living in their area of operation from Canlaon City down to Mabinay town.
A statement from 11th IB said that each soldier in the unit volunteered to set aside a portion of their salary every month to fund the educational program.
Other individuals have likewise pledged to sponsor one full scholar each under LEAP, among them namely: Marit Remonde, widow of former Press Secretary Cerge Remonde; and Board Members Dr. Liland Estacion and Jessica Villanueva. (RMN/PIA Negros Oriental)

draude April 20th, 2011, 04:14 AM Soldiers to trek to Mt. Canlaon to protect environment (http://www.pia.gov.ph/?m=1&t=1&id=28338)
DUMAGUETE CITY, Apr. 19 (PIA) --Troops from the 3rd Infantry Division (ID) of the Philippine Army (PA) based in Guihulngan City, Negros Oriental will brave the pounding summer heat, steep climbs and thick forest not to wage war but rather for a more non-violent cause: environmental protection.
Soldiers of the 11th Infantry Lapu-Lapu Battalion under the 3rd ID will hike to one of the most active volcanoes in the country, Mt. Kanlaon in Canlaon City for a three-day trek starting May 13 to 15, 2011.
The hike organized by the battalion will be participated in by representatives coming from the Governor's Office, Canlaon City local government, local tourism offices, Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) cadets, Department of Education (DepEd), Dumaguete Press Club, Sentinel Mountaineering Society and other local government and non-government organizations.
According to 11th IB Commanding Officer Ramil Bitong in a letter addressed to the Dumaguete Press Club, the activity aims to promote local tourism and enhance environmental protection and preservation. "This will be highlighted by a tree-planting activty and cleanliness drive along the trails," wrote Bitong in the letter.
Based on the activity itinerary, the climbers will set up camp on May 13 in Canlaon City and on May 14, they will make their way to the trek's jump-off point at Brgy. Pula, ascend to Canlaon Summit then descend to Margaja Valley where they will set up camp for the night. The following day, the group will depart for Mapot, Brgy. Malaiba and end their trek at Brgy. Mabigo.
Mt. Kanlaon is the most imposing landmark in the Negros Island and the main attraction for tourists and mountaineers in Canlaon City. Soaring 2,415 meters above sea level, it holds the highest peak in Central Philippines, making it a major climb for experienced climbers. (RMN/PIA Negros Oriental)
draude April 20th, 2011, 04:15 AM Dumaguete City set to host BCBP convention (http://www.pia.gov.ph/?m=1&t=1&id=28340)
DUMAGUETE CITY, Apr 19 (PIA)--Dumaguete City expects to welcome some 3,000 delegates of Brotherhood of Christian Businessmen and Professionals (BCBP) to attend the 31st national anniversary celebration on May 6 & 7, 2011.
The two-day gathering is expected to perk up the local tourism as well as open business interests since most attendees come from all over the country and abroad, BCBP Chair Leo Cabrera said.
The local tourism office has coordinated the organizer in planning out some tourism activities and destinations for the visitors to promote the city as well as the province’s tourist sites, arts and culture.
Cabrera said some of the delegates are arriving ahead on May 4 to savor the amenities and pleasantries of Dumaguete and the neighboring towns and cities.
“It is observed that all hotels and some tourist resorts are already fully booked for participants of the national celebration of the BCBP,” he said.

draude April 20th, 2011, 04:16 AM President Aquino to declare Valencia as Agro-Industrial Economic Zone (http://www.pia.gov.ph/?m=1&t=1&id=28342)
DUMAGUETE CITY, Apr 19 (PIA) Trade and Industry Secretary Gregory Domingo has recommended to President Benigno Aquino to declare the five hectare industrial park of the town of Valencia as Agro-Industrial Economic Zone to be known as Valencia Special Economic Zone.
The Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) has already passed a board resolution declaring the area located in Barangay Palinpinon as Valencia Special Economic Zone. PEZA promotes the establishments of economic zones in the Philippines for foreign investment.
Secretary Domingo, in his memorandum addressed to President Aquino, a copy of which was forwarded to Valencia Mayor Enrique Gonzales, recommended to issue a Presidential Proclamation to officially declare the site as special economic zone.
The PEZA has approved the creation of the Valencia Special Economic Zone in Barangay Palinpinon, Valencia Negros Oriental last March 30.
A PEZA declared economic zone will ensure investors of world-standard facilities and support services.
The Valencia Hydraulic System Technologies, Inc., engage in the production of underwater equipment, is the first company to operate in the economic zone.
The local government of Valencia which hosts the geothermal facility of Energy Development Corporation took the initiative of establishing its industrial park in a bid to generate more livelihood and work opportunities for local folks.
The town has been identified by the government as a suitable site for micro-industrial companies as it provides electric subsidy to its electric consumers.
The project is already 40 percent complete and is expected to be finished before the end of the year. Half of the funds used for the development of the project will come from Royalty Tax while the remaining will be from borrowings. (PIA NegOr/JCT)

draude April 20th, 2011, 04:18 AM Conservationist urges production of honey (http://www.visayandailystar.com/2011/April/18/negor1.htm)
Filipino conservationist, Dr. Neil Aldrin Mallari, director of Flora and Fauna International and vice president of the Wildlife Conservation Society of the Philippines, is recommending that local government units in Negros Oriental support a program pushing for natural honey production as an alternate source of income.
Mallari, who was among the 200 participants in the recent 20th Annual Biodiversity Conservation held at Silliman University in Dumaguete City, said they are working on a project to divert the people, especially small ethnic groups, from coal making to honey production to prevent further degradation of the country’s already depleted forests.
He said a study conducted in Southern Luzon shows that the real driver of deforestation is coal production. Every street corner in the areas covered by the study displayed piles of charcoal for sale as liquefied petroleum gas is expensive.
Indigenous people sell charcoal for P20 per sack produced, and food chains in the country, like those that offer grilled dishes, buy charcoal that is cheaper than LPGs, Mallari said.
Mallari also said they discovered that the forest in Southern Luzon was rich with honey so they did an experiment involving ten families and told them to collect honey instead of producing charcoal.
The people know where the beehives are, and are now trained on how to collect honey the natural way, Mallari said, adding that their income from collecting and selling honey is greater than what they used to earn from charcoal.
He said he and his group are working with local communities and with consumer-interest-groups.
He said the project started last year and it is doing well so far, but this year, there was a low harvest because of a super typhoon that hit the area and unusual rainy season even during the summer months.*

DUMAGUETE CITY, Apr 19 (PIA)--Dumaguete City expects to welcome some 3,000 delegates of Brotherhood of Christian Businessmen and Professionals (BCBP) to attend the 31st national anniversary celebration on May 6 & 7, 2011.

jundem_dq63 April 20th, 2011, 05:35 PM http://www.funcrunch.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/Maundy-Thursday.jpg
The Holy Thursday which is also called as Maundy Thursday is being celebrated today world wide. Maundy Thursday is the day when Jesus Christ had his last supper with his disciples. The Maundy Thursday is the day which is four days after his entry in the Jerusalem. After the last supper, Juda will make a plan to become disloyal to Christ which would lead to his crucifixion on Good Friday.
This is the most ancient tradition among the celebrations of the holy week. The Holy Thursday or Maundy Thursday is the day when the construction of three pillars of Catholic Faith was made. The three pillars are the Sacrament of Holy Communion, the priesthood and the Mass.
Meanwhile when Christ was having last supper with his disciples, he blessed the bread and wine and used certain words. The same words are used by the orthodox priests during the Mass and the Divine Liturgy. According to Roman Catholics, Jesus Christ asked his disciples to continue this act after him and made them the pioneer priests.
When the last supper was ended and Juda had left, Christ made another advice to his disciples. He told them that he is going to give a new commandment. The commandment was that they should love each other in the same manner he loved them. The word “Maundy” derived its roots from “commandment” which is a Latin word. So this is how the “Maundy Thursday” was made and it s also called as the Holy Thursday which is a holy event of Christians.
