The Dumaguete workshop turns golden

Fifty years. Over 600 writing fellows. One tradition: Three weeks in Dumaguete City, where young writers participate in discussions led by older writers on the relative merits and demerits of submitted works, as well the virtues of craft.

It used to be that the batch of aspiring writers that gained fellowships to the National Writers Workshop established in 1952 by Dr. Edilberto K. Tiempo and Dr. Edith L. Tiempo would only sit around long tables and listen to the co-directors and guest panelists perorate and sometimes argue over each manuscript.

But everything evolves, times change, and gone are the days when a haughty senior writer would dismiss a piece of work, whether poetry or short fiction, and suggest that the fellow, boy or girl, instead “Go home and plant camote.”

A kinder, gentler disposition has generally taken over the workshop panelists, especially since a majority of these have become regulars in these rites of passage conducted each Maytime in the City of Gentle People.

These days, while the week’s set of panelists often starts out in evaluating a submission, the fellows themselves are asked to render their own comments on a batchmate’s work. Sometimes they even get to do this before the senior writers make their respective pitches.

The creative writing workshop was patterned after the one pioneered by the poet Paul Engle of the University of Iowa, way back in the Fifties. The Tiempos were privileged to have become part of that workshop, which is still going strong in UI, producing some of the best poets, fiction writers, and now creative non-fiction writers in the USA.

Upon their return to Dumaguete and assuming teaching positions in Silliman University, the Tiempos established their own edition, which they acknowledged to have picked up in spirit and form from the mother workshop in Iowa City.

The first batch of workshop fellows who went to Dumaguete in the summer of 1962 were the following: J. Lorenzo Rivera, Jose Ferrari, Jose Lansang Jr., Luciano Tenedo, Petronilo Bn. Daroy, Socorro Federis-Tate, Vic Samonte, and Wilfrido D. Nolledo.

The following year had these fellows: Alberto Florentino, Amalia Perez, Bataan Faigao, Elena Reyes, Emmanuel Osorio, Erwin Castillo, Fernando Afable, Geronimo Sicam, Indalencio de Leon, Ireneo Gancuangco, Jesus Peralta, Ko Won, Leonidas Benesa, Linda Ty-Casper, Nicanor Tabligan, Raymond Llorca, Rogelio Sicat, and Valdemar Olaguer.

Nolledo and Castillo would go on to enjoy fellowships in Iowa, and author landmark novels. Daroy and Benesa would become two of our most notable art critics. Florentino, Faigao and Afable would migrate to the US, and there continue with their writing and related art, with the last-named joining a Zen monastery and becoming its Abbott. Rivera, Federis-Tate, Peralta, Ty-Casper, Llorca, Sicat and Olaguer would win Palanca prizes, and some of them go on to author important books.

Many other Filipino and foreign writers would gain from their participation in the workshop, even stay on in Dumaguete, and/or become panelists, in the footsteps of Nick Joaquin and Francisco Arcellana, among others that represented the pride of Philippine literature.

For decades it was formally known as the Silliman University Summer Writers Workshop, until funding was somehow withdrawn by the otherwise venerable institution, so that alumni of the workshop took it upon themselves to establish a foundation that saw to its continuity for several years, until such time that CAP College and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) stepped in to provide much support. And eventually, SU under its enlightened president Ben Malayang retrofitted the original arrangement, albeit the NCCA still gives a generous grant for the unbroken conduct of the Silliman University National Writers Workshop.

The links remain strong between Dumaguete and Iowa, with Rowena Tiempo Torrevillas, “Dad” Ed’s and “Mom” Edith’s daughter — she of her own sterling qualities as a poet and writer — still teaching at UI, while now also serving as the Dumaguete workshop’s director for the second straight year. Only fitting, too, especially now that Mom Edith, National Artist for Literature, is in her 90s, and that the workshop she sustained upon Dad Ed’s demise in 1996 is celebrating its 50th anniversary this May.

For this summer, internationally-acclaimed Singaporean writer from Singapore Management University, Kirpal Singh, will be sitting in with the panel.

“The workshop, which is the longest running Writers Workshop in Asia, is coordinated by the Silliman University Department of English and Literature.”

Let me add: That Eng. Dept. is headed by Evelyn Mascunana, who gets able support from her assistants Parts Partosa and Alana Leilani Narciso. And of course Myrna, Bobby, and Sawi or Dr. Aquino are the “homegrown” fixtures that help constitute a bedrock of tradition for the workshop.

Hmm, I note with some pride that at least three of this year’s “golden” fellows have been outstanding students of mine in Ateneo: Eva Gubat in my Poetry class some years back, Andrea Macalino in a Fiction class quite recently, and Miguel Sulangi who was in a Phil. Lit class and submitted such polished essays that I had to be told by our own Eng. Dept. that I couldn’t give him an A+ — that a flat A would do.

They will surely contribute much to their own workshop. I have always been of the opinion that while these young fellows do learn a thing or two from the much older writers — not the least important of which is how to handle any literature with graciousness besides grace — they learn more while among themselves, bonding for three weeks in such close quarters as to establish rapport and camaraderie and harmony, which might prevent them from turning into gadfly poseurs later in the literary life.

The craft will take care of itself, if one is serious and remains devoted to learning all about individual excellence. We will hope that the process will start right on their first night at the Writers Village in Camp Lookout, Valencia, a half-hour drive up the foothills of Mt. Talinis from the city.

We will also expect quite a turnout of balik-fellows for this golden summer. For those into Facebook, check out Silliman University National Writers Workshop, which was set up by Misael Ondong, whose latest word is that the social schedule for the grand reunion is still being fine-tuned. Oh, and I know that Danny Reyes is in charge of the gala program.

Dumaguete-based writer and exceptional literary website administrator Ian Rosales Casocot and poet Joel Toledo, the literary editor of Philippines Free Press magazine, are collaborating on a special literary section in the PFP that will be devoted to works by workshop alumni. Rowena also seeks to push through with plans for an anthology of representative works from each of the 50 batches.

Kirpal Singh from Singapore, as the notable Asian writer who will also help out in the panel (last year it was Xu Xi from Hong Kong), is no stranger to our country and many of our major writers who have crossed paths with him in the international literary circuit. He is a special friend, blessed like good friends are with the extra gift of laughter.

Robin Hemley, director of the Nonfiction Writing Program of the University of Iowa (also senior editor of The Iowa Review and editor of Defunctmag.com), is scheduled to bring in more than a score of UI students for a month, longer than when he first did it with a dozen in 2004, as workshop participants in Dumaguete. This time, as I understand it, they will be based more in Cebu City, with a sojourn in Bohol also in the works.

In coordination with Sarge Lacuesta, Robin is now rearranging their sked so that they can be in Dumaguete on the last few days of the final week, in time for the street dancing, fireworks, and bacchanalian revelry. Apart from those, Robin will also represent UI in accepting a tribute.

As Rowena has communicated to him (Cc this eavesdropper), “The 50th anniversary includes recognition to the various entities that have been part of the Philippine National Writers’ Workshop over the past half-century. The University of Iowa is the recipient of the institutional recognition, and I believe our university president Ben Malayang is intending to present you with the plaque. It would be perfect if you were there to receive it.”

Yes, it would be perfect if all of us who once shared in the continuing bounty that is the workshop now turned golden would be there to receive even more grace and graciousness from one another.

Garbed in their most colorful and fascinating costumes reminiscent of hardworking vegetable farmers of the early days, young performers gracefully flaunted their best moves with the melodious beating of the drums. Their ingenuity and enthusiasm blended well enough to demonstrate through dancing how their ancestors toiled for abundant harvest – crossing the rivers and mountains just to bring their crops to the town market.

Bellowing together with a reverberating voice of thanksgiving to God through their patron saint St. Joseph, the participants portrayed the religious fervor and devotion of their forefathers in surmounting adversities. “Viva Señor San Jose” was the shout of approval for the constant yield that even present-day farmers are enjoying.

Creatively combining Cebuano words “Pasalamat Pinaagi sa Sayaw” (a thanksgiving through dance), “Pasayaw Festival” has gradually gained momentum not only among local residents of Canlaon City in Negros Oriental but also for people from the neighboring towns and provinces. Every March 19, the typically quiet and bucolic place situated at the foot of Mt. Kanlaon (approximately 9.5 kilometers away from its periphery) kindles a tremor of revelry. The entire city is swathed with a cloud of colorful attractions and festivities. It is also a day of jubilation for farmers – to take a breather from toiling hard in the field and feasting their eyes on the exhilarating presentations in the streets.

With this year’s active participation of the city’s 12 barangays and utilizing new dance patterns and mechanics, the recently concluded Pasayaw Festival was indeed a proof of the people’s team spirit and religiosity.

“It was a well-attended and most-participated activity where local residents from all walks of life shared their time and effort to make this year’s festivities a resounding success,” shared Canlaon City Mayor Jimmy Jayme L. Clerigo. “We will try our best to improve further to make the event more distinct and be known not only in the Visayas region but also in the entire country. We should set our own identity so that people would know how exciting Pasayaw Festival is and how hospitable Canlaonians are. No matter how small our city is, it is a growing neighborhood that has a unique character that captivates every guest,” he added.

The contingent from Barangay Pula garnered the top prize for the Dance Showdown category while Barangay Mabigo emerged as the winner in the Street Dancing competition. Both winning groups received a Carry Multicab each to be used as service vehicle for the barangay.

According to Roderick John B. Schon, city councilor and this year’s chairman of the Pasayaw Committee, the festival’s presentations emerged colorful with emphasis on the dance steps. “This year, we integrated the singing and dancing and we adopted our own music. In Pasayaw, vegetables should be highlighted in the design (particularly in costumes) and Mt. Kanlaon to ably represent Canlaon in its entirety as a vegetable producer in the Visayas. We will do our best to perk up the festival by using our own creative dance patterns and steps to make it uniquely Pasayaw, and hopefully, we will gain recognition in the same scope with that of other famous festivals in the country,” Schon disclosed.

Dubbed as the “Highland Garden City” for its vast agricultural area blessed with cool weather, Canlaon is the primary producer of vegetables, rice, sugarcane, and livestock in the province. It is also famous among adventure travelers. Trekking up Mt. Kanlaon is prevalent during summer, especially during the Lenten season as “panata” or penitence for others.

Having confidence in the city’s unique attractions and natural wonders, Mayor Clerigo’s administration is resolute in its drive to bring to light the various potentials of Canlaon as a tourist destination. “With the abundant gifts of nature we have here, it is our commitment to make use of God’s creations for others to enjoy. We will focus on diverse development projects not only to lure tourists but also to provide local employment. Pasayaw Festival is just one of the many exciting activities embodying the warmth and religious zeal of our people, but there is more than meets the eye,” concludes the energetic local executive.

How to get there: One must travel by air from Manila via Dumaguete City (166 km.) – about four hours travel time by road or Bacolod City (90 km.) – approximately three hours travel time. Both routes are accessible by bus or van-for-hire.

Residents of Dumaguete City, Bacong, and Sibulan will be richer by P240 million after the government shall have paid lot owners the cost of the road right of way in its grand plan to build the much-awaited circumferential road linking the three major LGUs.

The amount comprises almost 50 percent of the total project cost pegged at P500 million, broken down as follows:

P160 million for Dumaguete, P30 million for Bacong and P50 million for Sibulan. The remaining P260 million will be the actual cost of the construction of the road itself.The National Development Council and National Economic Development Authority have jointly approved and endorsed the P500 million megaproject of building a 15- kilometer and 20-meter-wide circumferential road linking the city and towns of Dumaguete, Bacong and Sibulan.

Said agencies are convinced that the project would boost economic activity as well as address the worsening traffic condition within the Metro Dumaguete area.

Mayor Chiquiting Sagarbarria is positive that the construction will commence in 2012 and be completed the next year. The concerned local government units are expected to share the burden of paying a loan of $15 million to finance this major development project.

it's time we spread the economic progress to the outlying suburban barangays of Dumaguete, which although are mainly residential, have serious potential for commercial growth.. the downtown CBD is already congested and the DBP is sure to fill-up in the next few years.. it's a win-win for all

DUMAGUETE CITY, Apr 25 (PIA)--Twenty students from different universities and colleges in Central Visayas set to vie for the Ten Outstanding Students of the Philippines Region7 (TOSP R7) on April 28-May 1, 2011 in Dumaguete City.

The finalists who comprised the regional search will undergo a transformation program where they will be subjected to a series of interviews and activities as part of the judging, regional secretariat member Rolando Villamero, Jr., said.

The finalists are Chic Borromeo and Argie Pinanonang of St. Paul University Dumaguete; Johanna Lei Bandoy, Jonathan Andro Tan and Mariel Chielo Ybio of Silliman University; Lauraine May Georfo, Shiela Marie Ladroma, Athena Plaza and Karl Patrick Ermac of University of San Carlos (Campus I & II) in Cebu City; Lovely Genoguin, Charles Ruel Novabos and Alvin Pahati of University of San Jose Recoletos Cebu; Edilyn Lopez, University of Cebu; Dexter Dungog and Alan Angelo Llevares of Cebu institute of Technology; Patricia Andrea Patena, St. Theresa’s College; Jollyjoie Serad, University of the Visayas; Nikkie Marie Geverola and Carla Marie Tumulak of University of the Philippines Cebu College; and Luigine Christi Chan, Southwestern University Cebu.

Villamero said TOSP-R7 is an annual search which recognizes the best and the brightest students in the provinces of Region VII who have excelled in academics, leadership, and social responsibility.

This program aims at establishing role models who will galvanize our young people into action and help bring about total human and economic development in the nation, he added.

Of the 20 finalists a set of ten students will be chosen to qualify to the national level of the competition.

DUMAGUETE CITY, April 25 (PIA) --- Residents in the town of San Jose, Negros Oriental can now buy fresh, locally grown and pesticide-free farm and fishery products after the town's Bagsakan sa Barangay outlet opened its doors on April 13 this year.

The government-funded food depot in San Jose town is located in front of the San Jose Police Station and housed in a building provided by San Jose Mayor Emmanuel Remollo as counterpart from the local government unit, San Jose Municipal Agricultural Officer Rene Amores told the Philippine Information Agency.

Amores said the Bagsakan sa Barangay is a barangay-based food depot and distribution system that sells affordable, locally-produced and organically-grown food products such as meat, poultry, fish and vegetables.

"We buy the goods from our local marginalized farmers and fishermen then we sell them at our Bagsakan site at the prevailing market price," said Amores.

There are between 80 to 100 farmers in San Jose engaged in vegetable production tilling collectively 60 hectares of agricultural land in the fifth class municipality of San Jose, according to Amores.

The Bagsakan site is open Mondays to Sundays from 7:00 a.m. until 5:30 p.m.

Under a memorandum of agreement signed between the Department of Agriculture (DA) and the San Jose municipal government, DA shelled out P100,000 for the purchase of equipment to be used for the depot's operations while the LGU put up a counterpart of P50,000 for the purchase of wage goods from the local farmers to be sold at the depot, aside from providing the building, manpower and shouldering the Bagsakan's operational expenses.

The project was initiated by DA under the administration of former Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo with the aim of helping local farmers and fisherfolks by providing an alternative market for them and directly linking them to their consumers in the community.

Due to the abundant supply of goods being sold in the San Jose Bagsakan depot, Amores said they are now eyeing to open a possible outlet in Dumaguete City, 14.3 kilometers away. “Our farmers and fisherfolks are producing more than what can be sold here so we are looking into the possibility of opening an outlet in the city,” he said. DUMAGUETE CITY, Negros Oriental (PIA) – A total of P1.5 million has been allotted to Sibulan municipality’s projects this year, including production of rice, fruits and vegetables, fishery and coastal resource management, piggery and poultry

raising, training for farmer associations, and marketing agricultural products of Sibulan’s 15 barangays.

Negros Oriental’s 2nd district Rep. George Arnaiz has given a counterpart fund of P1.5 million for the purchase of vegetable seeds. Members of farmer associations in the barangays are expected to go through a training series before funds from the allotment are released. Such training is meant to educate farmers with agri-livelihood production.

However, Remollo also stressed the need for the Capitol leadership to formulate a definite direction and plan for the sustainable development of Negros Oriental before such lobbying could even commence.

Remollo, who is a trusted ally of President Benigno Aquino III, is seen as the province’s best bet in convincing Malacañang to pour development projects for Negros Oriental in a scale never before seen under the previous administrations. The province’s master plan must be sound enough to convince the powers that be the plan is congruent to the potentials of Negros Oriental to sustain economic activities and create job opportunities.

He believes, like Rep. Jocelyn Limkaichong, that the future of Negros Oriental is in medical tourism, noting that there are approximately 250 beach resorts from Vallehermoso up north to Basay down south, thus, there is an urgent need to build more concrete roads, bigger piers, quality hospitals, sports facilities, plus the relocation of the airport, among others, to cater to the needs of the tourists, particularly the retirees from Japan and other developed countries.

Few believe that Ipe’s appointment to CDC, which he considers as a “blessing in disguise,” is a political payback, but his credentials as a top notch corporate lawyer tempers any criticisms.

His main objectives as CDC President and CEO are to double CDC’s revenue for the government to P600 million through improved collection of taxes, to encourage more investments (CDC currently has 950 corporations), and to develop the rest of the 28,000 hectares of CDC property.

Remollo dismisses any political ambition for Negros Oriental at least for now, however, he remains to be the voice which local LP stalwarts follow.

Hundreds of job seekers in Negros Oriental are expected to join a Jobs Fair scheduled by the Tripartite Industrial Peace Council of Negros Oriental on May 1, at the Negros Oriental Convention Center, Capitol Area, Dumaguete City, a Philippine News Agency press release said.

The Jobs Fair will mark the celebration of Labor Day and is spearheaded by TIPC with the Department of Labor and Employment and the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration.

Kenric Villaluz of the DOLE said almost 19 agencies recruiting for overseas jobs coming from Manila and Cebu with around five recruitment agencies for local employment are expected to participate in the jobs fair.

Simultaneous with the jobs fair is a medical mission that will be held at the Lamberto Sports Complex.

Before the jobs fair and medical mission at 9 a.m. is there will be a Mass at 7 a.m. followed by the opening program in front of the sports complex.

Villaluz said the jobs fair is held regularly to mark Labor Day in the province. The theme this year's is "Matuwid na Daan Tungo sa Kaunlaran Para Sa Lahat,” the press release added.*

Scuba Diving from the Dumaguete Pier in the Philippines

Topside, this was the most unimpressive dive site I’d ever seen, with docked cargo ships and unpleasant noises and smells of industrial activity. Descending to the sand at about 20 feet did not provide much inspiration as we were greeted by some rusted cans and a baby’s diaper (used, apparently). I was left wondering why the boatload of experienced divers and divemasters was so keen on this site.

Dumaguete is on the Bohol Sea in Negros Oriental, Philippines, approximately 30 hours from Houston via Honolulu, Guam and an overnight in Manila. It is an absolutely fabulous dive location, at the northern portion of the “Coral Triangle”, the region of the greatest coral reef biodiversity in the world, and therefore well worth the arduous trip from Texas.

The pier at Dumagute was no exception; it turned out to be the richest site of photo opportunities and encounters with weird and wonderful creatures in Negros Oriental. In this photo I was lucky to capture some very interesting behavior between 2 similar looking fish species, and equally fortunate to have Marco Inocencio from Atlantis Dive Resort interpret the activities. According to Marco, the larger fish in the hole is a false cleanerfish (Aspidontus taeniatus), while the two smaller fishes that are shown in full view are cleaner wrasses (Labroides dimidiatus). The larger fish is a mimic; it’s actually a member the blenny family who is posing as a cleanerfish in order to take bites of skin and flesh from other fishes looking for a cleaning. The false cleanerfish is distinguished from the cleaner wrasses by its head, which ends in a “nose” with its mouth slightly under and behind it while the heads of the cleaner wrasses terminate with their mouths. If you look closely enough you’ll see the characteristic pouty lips of the false cleanerfish, presumably because she isn’t much appreciated for her clever disguise and food-gathering methods!

Palace eyes aviation industry upgrade

MANILA, Philippines - Malacañang is eyeing an upgrade for the aviation industry as it moves to hire qualified technical personnel and consultants.

In a press conference, Presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda said the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) has assured President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III that the country will be upgraded to category 1 before the end of the year.

“They [CAAP] are committed that it will be done one year or less,” he stressed.

The FAA downgraded the Philippines to Category 2 from Category 1 in 2008 after a safety audit conducted in November 2007 found that some policies of the local aviation sector to be below international standards. The downgrade prohibits local airlines from expanding flights to the US.

One of the primary issues was the lack of qualified technical personnel who will carry out procedures that ensure the safety of the Philippine air transport sector.

DUMAGUETE CITY, Apr 26 (PIA) Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) pensioners in Negros Oriental are expected to open a savings account with Land Bank as their retirement fund servicing bank.

In a memorandum of agreement, the GSIS is authorizing the state-run bank to service old-age and survivorship pensioners.

According to GSIS Branch Head Cecilia Tenaja the move is to make easier for the members, especially in the provinces, to access their benefits and other loans. Negros Oriental and Siquijor have 4,244 old-age pensioners,

Siquijor pensioners have started to use Land Bank’s facility last March, while pensioners in Negros Oriental are expected to transact with LBP on the second quarter of this year, Tenaja said.

LandBank savings accounts for GSIS members have been opened with automated teller machine (ATM) services specifically for the pensioners.

However, GSIS official said those who choose to keep existing savings accounts with the Union Bank of the Philippines can still use the GSIS eCard to transact the nearest Union Bank ATM.

LandBank service will be gradually expanded to all GSIS members as soon as the pilot GSIS branches have already tested, it is said.

Withdrawing monthly pension benefits and pension loans do not carry any transaction fee.

Both LandBank and Union Bank ATM cards may be used in any Megalink, Bancnet, and Expressnet machines. (PIA NegOr/JCT)

add to that, the quality of the events held, the ever increasing foot traffic and sales volume of its tenants, the ingenuity of the mall's promotions, and the development of the immediate lot itself (Yala Lifestyle Mall, Manhattan Suites Hotel, and Go Hotel) speaks volumes of the retail market that RPD is currently attracting, even though it is up against the juggernaut malls of Cebu.

anyway, we don't want to compete in sales if that's what he's talking about, since RPD is just a provincial mall, and malls from Cebu can easily swallow our market and sales figures.

i bet that guy from BXU haven't visited RPD yet, or is just being bitter, impatient, or grandstanding.

^^ the quality, stature, name-recall, and class of the RPD tenants alone would speak for itself.

add to that, the quality of the events held, the ever increasing foot traffic and sales volume of its tenants, the ingenuity of the mall's promotions, and the development of the immediate lot itself (Yala Lifestyle Mall, Manhattan Suites Hotel, and Go Hotel) speaks volumes of the retail market that RPD is currently attracting, even though it is up against the juggernaut malls of Cebu.

anyway, we don't want to compete in sales if that's what he's talking about, since RPD is just a provincial mall, and malls from Cebu can easily swallow our market and sales figures.

i bet that guy from BXU haven't visited RPD yet, or is just being bitter, impatient, or grandstanding.

Still quite small for the growing city... RPD, however, when it opened, is already about 45K+ sq.meters and it is already more than enough to serve a tiny city of 120K+ population.. It's architecture is already a huge bonus, plus the tenants are mostly only big cities are fortunate enough to have (eg Watsons, iStore, Crocs, Accessorize, Geox, Havaianas, The Athelete's Foot, ResToeRun, Trod, etc...) and it's another big bonus. These brands doesnt just open randomly in any place or mall... They go through feasibility studies.. Isnt it also good indicator of a "successful mall"?....and not just on how quickly is goes for expansion?... For now, RPD doesnt need to expand.. A 100-room GoHotel is already underconstruction at the back of the mall.. Another indicator, right?

And so it does not mean that if a mall is not expanding, it is not successful. Duh.. :nuts:

Niludhan Falls is a 40 meters high and 25 meters wide waterfalls. This falls is situated in Barangay Dawis which is 43 kilometers away from the city proper. Aside from its panoramic view, the place is ideal for extreme sports like motorcyle adventure, rock climbing, and rappeling as well as for leisurely activities like trekking, swimming, and picnics.

One had to pass long and winding rough roads to reach to this isolated but majestic looking place. Motorcycles and 4x4 wheel drive vehicles are the only modes of transportation for one to reach the spot that's why it is very ideal for motorbike adventurers. It might be a long and ardous journey but a trekker will forget the agony of the road once arriving there. Niludhan Falls is a sight to behold. A stretch of flat wall about 5-stories high and has 3 falls cascading down to a deep aquamarine body of water. It is surrounded by lush green vegetation watered by the mists from the falls. The long journey is more than enough to bargain for in order just to have the eyes laid, feast, and devour upon the grand view of the Niludhan Falls.

MEMBERS of the Local Council for Women (LCW) in Sibulan town, Negros Oriental, recently launched “Love a tree the women way,” a program that aims to fight climate change.

Sibulan information officer and LCW chairperson Connie Zamora-Rosales said the activity marked the Women’s Month celebration last month.

Rosales said each LCW member planted one rambutan or lanzones in their backyard.

“Planting a tree is like caring for a child and adult, of which women are experts,” she said.

Rosales reminded the women to take care of the trees they planted because the council will check on their growth after a year.

Rosales said she got the idea from a similar activity in Guimaras where every household has a mango tree.

The council members planted the trees at the vicinity of Lake Balinsasayao through the help of the Protected Area Management Board personnel.

Rosales said the tree-planting activity will be year-round.

^^ yup yup..the designs of RP varies. while RPD boasts of its beautifully designed building, our humble RPT could only manage a simple yet elegant mall design. But modesty aside, in fairness to our RPT, the "not-so-sosyal looking" mall earned the distinction of being the 2010 shopping center of the year of the Philippine Retailers' Association together with Eastwood Mall, Greenbelt 5, SM North EDSA and Island City Mall in Bohol.

I agree with @nicko, the decision to expand or not expand an existing mall does not totally mean that the mall is progressing or not. When RPT opened it was just around 35000 in GFA serving a city of 217,000 and a region of 3M people and it is not really surprising that RLC is going to add another almost 10000 sq m mall expansion to the existing mall since the demand for more shops is so high. In RPDs case, it was already huge when it opened and we should bear in mind that it is not easy to attract big brands/retailers to provincial malls. But there will come a time that RPD will also expand. I believe RLC has still a lot of space in Dumaguete for future expansion. :) Good morning.! :)

Plans to construct another port in Siaton, Negros Oriental, fizzled out due to its depth and the accessibility problem for big vessels and fastcrafts in Tambobo Bay, in the town.

Mayor Albert Ator said Tambobo Bay, that is haven to hundreds of foreign yachts during typhoons, has shallow waters, and is not accessible for inter-island vessels.

Instead of a pier, Ator said the construction of a Tambobo Bay boulevard costing P18 million near the abandoned wharf, should be considered rather than a pier for passenger vessels, while the local government unit and the Philippine Ports Authority has to determine its legality in the area.

If the pier construction is not feasible, the mayor said he welcomes an ambitious plan to construct an alternate international airport in Bondo, Siaton, which is 40 to 45 kilometers from the provincial capital of Dumaguete City.

Mayor Ator and Gov. Roel Degamo said they are willing to meet with Felipe Antonio Remollo, the newly appointed president and chief executive officer of Clark Development Authority, to discuss the plan.

The mayor has instructed municipal engineers to undertake research and coordinate with the Department of Public Works and Highways for the paper work.

Degamo, however, said the huge budgetary requirements for the construction of the airport needs backing from the administration and the help offered Remollo is most welcomed.*JG

My Take:

It's an honest to goodness burger if you want to get your beef fix. It is presented open faced with a big juicy sirloin pattie. The package comes with salsa on the side which enhances the flavour as it mixes with the pattiie's juices. On top of the sirloin patty is a slice of colby cheese which melts over the hot pattie. The The homemade bun is soft and does not fight back when bit into while the potato shreds on the side are fun to eat. I do still need to learn to eat it without making a fool of myself. For a real beef burger KRI is the one for you.

Not really sure if your observation is true, and if your observation is based on what parameter. Busyness is relative. I have been coming to Robinsons on weekends (even during weekdays) and I always see it very busy with plenty of shoppers. Perhaps you were there just a few minutes after opening or before closing time. However, there are times when it seems there are only a few people, but when you look outside there are just plenty of cars and vehicles. That means that these people are bringing their vehicles to shop. Robinsons Dumaguete is also deceptive in that it seems there are only a few people when in fact there are plenty, and that's because its hallways are really wide, so people are scattered. Unlike if the hallways are narrow, and people are concentrated in a small area.

RPD gets mostly really crowded (truest sense of the word) during weekends and during summer vacations like these times so it's not wholly dependent on the student population. Students go home to their hometowns every summer (even during weekends) and they only have very limited disposable budget to spend for shopping. They come to study and not to shop. The thought that Robinsons is relying on the students as their main target market does not actually make sense, but of course, having four universities a plus factor for them. Their acknowledged target markets are the household population itself, the growing expat community of the entire province of Negros Oriental and the academic communities.

Here is an excerpt of the market study that RLC made in the early 2000s here in the city. These are only highlights / skeletal framework (since the indepth is confidential). Take note again that this study was made years (2003-2004) even before the go signal was made to put up the mall here so there will be changes, particularly in the demographics.

TRADE AREA COMPOSITION

The acknowledged target markets are the household population, the growing expat community of the entire province of Negros Oriental, and the academic communities and the province of Siquijor and the three southern towns of the province of Cebu (due to their proximity to Dumaguete City). With Negros Oriental having a population of over 1 Million (year 2000 projection is 1,131,362 with a 2.7% annual growth rate) and 81,598 for Siquijor province, one can consider a 1Million figure as the immediate projected target market, the vast majority of which are wage earners and the academe.

DEMOGRAPHIC PROFILES
NEGROS ORIENTAL

Negros Oriental, considered to be the 4th largest island in the archipelago, having a total land area of 540,230 hectares, is composed of 557 barangays, 22 municipalities and 3 cities. The 1995 NSO Population Data registered the province’s household population as 1,025,247 with an annual average growth rate of 2.07% in the five-year period from 1990. Using the same annual AGR, projected population for year 2000 is 1,131,362. The literacy rate of the province’s household population 10 years old and over is 88.77%. The 1994 local NSO Statistics Survey lists that by income class, 26.79% of the population were receiving an average monthly income of P24, 747 while only 9.18% received an income of P10, 282.

PROVINCE OF SIQUIJOR

Siquijor province has a total land area of 34, 350 hectares and is located some 30 kms. from Negros Island. Composed of six municipalities, the province registered a population of 81,598 (annual growth rate of 2.19%) with a population density/km. of 237.55. With a predominantly young population, Siquijor has a literacy rate of 94.24%.

DUMAGUETE CITY

The total area of the city is approximately 3,426 hectares, 53.7% of which is residential, 6.4% commercial land use. As of year 2000, the city reached a population of 102,265 (institutional population included), with the # of household totalling to 21,582. Investments in the city as sourced by the Dept. of Trade and Industry showed a total of 3,214 firms registered between the years 1994 – 2000. Majority of the firms registered came from the service sector (87.7%) and manufacturing sector (7.7%).

Dumaguete Frisbee team wins national tournament

DUMAGUETE CITY, Apr 29 (PIA)--The Frisbee “Extreme” team of Dumaguete City walked away victorious after toppling 17 other frisbee teams from all over the country in Pool A of the 4th National Ultimo Abril Quatro Frisbee Tournament held April 15 to 17, 2011 at the Aboitiz Sports Field, Cebu City.

Extreme knocked off its opponents one by one as it won all its games from day one of the tournament until the championship round against Team KKK composed of mixed Frisbee players from Luzon Visayas and Mindanao.

The championship game ended with a 13-2 score in favor of Extreme.

The Dumaguete team's victory this year is a step up from its achievement in last year's games where they emerged first runner-up, with the opposing Team LVM winning by only one point.

Only 13 Extreme team players went to Cebu for the tournament this year due to budgetary constraints. But this did not prevent the team from bagging the championship and walking away with the following awards: Pool A Male Most Valuable Player for Jose Antonio “Tajji” Torres Pasigna and one of the Mythical Seven for Pool A Female to Bea Bianca Vargas Belcina.

The team, in a statement, thanked Negros Oriental Gov. Roel Degamo, Sweyn Ferraren of Botical Real, Vincent Ramirez and Anna Christine Torres-Pasigna of Payag sa Likod Restobar for the support they extended to the team. (RMN/PIA Negros Oriental)

^^ bottom line, in the real world, the consumers and patrons will not care if a mall is losing money, not expanding, or winning awards.. as long as they are happy with the mix of mall tenants, events, and facilities w/c it offers, they will surely come back for more.

after all, people will not say: "hey, let's go to RPD because they're an award winning mall" but rather: "hey, let's go to RPD because they have iStore, G By GUESS, Watsons, GEOX, Accessorize, etc. and that's all i want" :)

Zamboanguita to hold medical mission on April 30 (http://www.pia.gov.ph/?m=1&t=1&id=29702)

DUMAGUETE CITY, Apr. 29 (PIA) -- As part of its activities lined up for its upcoming Charter Day and Town Fiesta on May 13 and 15, respectively, the Zamboanguita municipal government will hold a medical outreach program on April 30.

The outreach program led by Zamboanguita Mayor Kit Marc Adanza is dubbed "Halad sa Zamboangnon" and will be held at the Zamboanguita Municipal Gymnasium.

Medical and dental services will be extended during the activity as well as distribution of seeds, vaccination of dogs, milk feeding, etc.

The municipal government has invited doctors and dentists in the third district of Negros Oriental and medical officers from the Philippine Army assigned in the area to assist Zamboanguita's rural health unit in extending free medical services during the Halad, said Zamboanguita Information Officer Aida Saavedra.

Saavedra said the municipal agriculture office will also extend the following services for free during the outreach program: corn and vegetable seedlings distribution, artificial insemination for large cattle, free anti-rabies vaccination for dogs, soil sampling for analysis, and distribution of fresh milk from the Provincial Veterinary Office.

Zamboanguita's Local Civil Registration office will waive fees for late registration and the service fee for Certificate of No Marriage (CENOMAR) during said activity.

Milk feeding for 0-5 years years old will be done by the municipality's social welfare and development office, which will also waive the fees senior citizen's ID so long as applicants bring their own ID pictures. (RMN/PIA NegOr)

The population of Dumaguete, bisan tuod og 120K ra, kay compose man pud og mga tawo nga naa'y igong disposable income. So, bisan tuod og gamay ra ang populasyon sa DUmaguete, pero tungod kay naa'y mga kwarta ang tawo, makasupport gud og mall pareho sa RPD.

RPD won't venture kung wala sila'y nakita nga kwarta sa Dumaguete.

120K ang pilipino plus 20K nga foreigners.. :lol::lol::lol:... joke lang.... pero daghan ug foreigners......

There should be more than 10K expats living in the city and surrounding areas now. By all means this is a bigger economic force compared to the IT/BPO workers, even if those coming from the highest paid and biggest company segments. So the expat/tourism/retirement/medical tourism is a good industry to develop, and make them stay here for the long run...

Apple Launches iPad 2 in the Philippines

MANILA, Philippines (April 29, Friday) – Apple officially launches the most awaited iPad 2 in the Philippines today at P23,990 in any iStore (official Apple stores) in the country.

Power Mac Center (PMC) opened their stores in five malls around Metro Manila at 10am; all of which sell the new generation iPad 2 at its official release price. The PMC Apple Premium Reseller store in SM Mall of Asia was full of technology-curious people who would want to take a quick glance of the new gadget.

Apple iPad 2 was released in the United States on March 11 and around two weeks after that, it was made available in Japan, New Zealand and Australia.
While there are millions of people who want to lay their hands on the new gadget, Apple is openly declaring the boost in their sales.

Steve Jobs, Apple CEO, said, “With more than 15 million iPads sold, iPad has defined an entirely new category of mobile devices.”

“While others have been scrambling to copy the first generation iPad, we’re launching iPad 2, which moves the bar far ahead of the competition and will likely cause them to go back to the drawing boards yet again,” he added.
PMC is also offering a 3-day 10% off sale on all iPad 2 accessories including the Smart Cover.

Moreover, the Mac retailer store in the Philippines is also offering a free 30-day coverage for all accidental damages; this is under the “Save Mac” program which is also available in other countries. Such program entitles PMC to replace iPad 2 units that were damaged due to unforeseen or sudden incidents.

Apple iPad 2 is available in black or white, 3G-WiFi or WiFi-only, and 16, 32 or 64 GBs capacity.

iPad 2 Dumaguete
The iStore in Dumaguete City is also displaying iPad 2 on their shelf. iStore Dumaguete is located on the ground floor of Robinsons Place Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental.
