The Philippine Dragon Boat team has just won their third world title at the 10th World Dragon Boat Championships by the International Dragon Boat Federation (IDBF) in Tampa Bay, Florida last Friday.

The Philippine team splashed their way to win the gold medal in the Premier 1000m event (small boat) by clocking a new world record of 4:57.13 for the event.

Australia settled for the silver medal with a time of 5:00.09 and Hungary captured the bronze with 5:03.71.

This is the first time that the Philippine team has won in the 1000m Premier event, powered by just 10 paddlers. Their two gold medals at the 2009 World Championships in Prague, Czech Republic was for the 200m Premiere Mixed and 200m Premier Open categories.

Aside from the gold medal from the Premier 1000m event, the Philippine team earlier bagged the gold medal in 200m Premier Mixed and 1000m Men’s categories. They also bagged a silver medal in the premier 200-meter men’s division event on Saturday.

Eumir Felix Marcial Wins PHL’s 1st World Junior Boxing Championship Gold
Posted on August 7, 2011

Another great story for Philippine Sports last weekend is Eumir Felix Marcial‘s triumph at the World Junior Boxing Championships.

Eumir Felix Marcial edged Turkey’s Cengiz Onat to nab the gold in the Aiba World Junior Boxing Championship Saturday.

The 15-year-old Marcial, hailing from Zamboanga City, is the first Filipino to win gold since the competition’s first staging in 2001.

The southpaw Marcial, standing at five-foot-seven, dominated the match with a 9-7 decision in favor of the Filipino lad in the bout held at the Kazakhstan Sports Palace in Astana, Kazakhstan.

Marcial previously defeated Armenia, Azerbaijan and Belarus en route to the championship round.

Although the Philippine Sports Commission didn’t support the campaign of Marcial, Manny Pangilinan rewarded the kid from Zamboanga with a P300,000 incentive.

Na observe nako common denominator sa prob is that ang ISPs sa mga di maka access is Globe. Other forumers from other places cant access SSC too. And most of them use Globe. My ISP is Globe. I cant access SSC if Im home. But whenever Im outside using wifi, I can access it.

@nicko: maybe your IP address was hacked or something?

Wow, am able to access SSC from my very own computer today. What a relief!

Just had my tech people inspect my setup the other day, and they said it could not be the IP address because most computers nowadays have dynamic IP addresses, meaning, they change everytime you switch on and off your computer. This is to prevent hacking, and if indeed you are hacked, they can do it only for a day, or one internet session. It seems the problem is with a certain ISP, or with the SSC server itself. I can access SSC in other computers but later found out that they are using another ISP. Last night I tried to access SSC in an internet cafe but could not get in. I found out that they had the same ISP as mine :)...

Dumaguete And Apo Island

Dumaguete is a quiet university town in the province of Negros Oriental. It is the site of Silliman University, which was founded by the Protestants in the 1900s. Perhaps because of the Protestant ethic, the town today has a very orderly layout and is spic-and-span—neater than other provincial towns that I’ve seen in my travels in the Philippines. Grand acacia trees with their beautiful green canopies grace many parts of the town, including the boulevard by the sea and the university campus. Eateries also abound in the area around the boulevard, including the very popular Sans Rival Cakes and Pastries, whose sans rival is probably the best there is anywhere and the most sought-after pasalubong from this city.

Dumaguete is also the gateway to a world-class dive spot in Apo Island, which is claimed to be one of the top ten dive sites in the world. Unfortunately, my husband and I are not divers, but the snorkeling there is pretty awesome too. Underwater visibility is topnotch especially in the Marine Sanctuary. And it is teeming with marine life. Even in the shallows, we saw giant sea turtles (pawikan), several varieties of clown fishes, and amazing corals of different shapes, colors, and sizes. It was like swimming in a giant aquarium.

Dumaguete pastry shop is famous for its ‘silvanas’

By KC Santos

DUMAGUETE CITY, NEGROS ORIENTAL – It’s amazing how a simple pastry made the Sans Rival Cakes & Pastries shop very popular both here and abroad. The café was established in 1977 by a family who profess a common love for baking.

Like most success stories, the Sans Rival Cakes & Pastries shop was established by accident.

Trining Teves-Sagarbarria merely wanted to treat her family and friends with her special homemade silvanas. Word about the delicious treat soon reached neighbors, prompting the family to convert their garage into a mini-pastry shop where they started to offer this delicious dessert on a take-out basis.

The humble bakery in San Jose, located near the city’s famous Rizal Boulevard, slowly gained popularity. Tita Trining soon handed over her secret recipe to daughter-in-law Mary Ann Demandante-Sagarbarria, who would later introduce the silvanas to the rest of the country.

With the addition of addition of cakes and other pastries, Mary Ann would transform the business into The House of Silvanas.

An heirloom recipe perfectly preserved, the Sans Rival Cakes & Pastries silvanas is a heavenly surprise. Don’t be fooled with it its stiff coating; for sandwiched inside is a smooth and creamy filling.

Responsible for its chewy nougat texture is the cashew-meringue outer layer which is double-coated with cookie bits. Hints of grated nuts add an exciting crunch that complements the smoothness of the cold butter cream filling.

A box of 10 silvanas costs only 105 pesos but with each piece being incredibly light and satisfying you won’t notice you’re down to your last piece. If you have enough space in your luggage and fridge, I highly suggest you take home a few boxes of this treat.

Your visit to Dumaguete will surely not be complete without having a taste of the silvanas from Sans Rival Cakes & Pastries (http://loqal.ph/food-and-beverage/2011/08/09/sans-rival-cakes-pastries/).

WHITE WATER KAYAKING
AND
RAPPELLING

It is not just caves that are drawing tourists to Mabinay, but also the 12-kilometer long Ilog River that has become a favorite venue for kayaking enthusiasts both foreign and local. The usual starting point is near Bugsok Falls with a hot spring, further down kayakers can find relief and appreciate the lush beauty of virgin forests adjoining the river before reaching the end point at Kauswagan Bridge where they can indulge in rappelling.

DENR, DepEd proclaim SPUD as Eco-Friendly School in CV
Pia NegOr, August 11, 2011
by Jennifer Catan-Tilos

DUMAGUETE CITY, Aug. 10 (PIA) -- The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) together with the Department of Education (DepEd), Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and Smart Communications has adjudged St. Paul University Dumaguete (SPUD) as the Central Visayas Most Sustainable and Eco – Friendly School.

This yearly nationwide search is organized to recognize efforts of various schools to undertake eco-friendly programs and activities.

According to External Affairs Director Rafael Duhaylungsod, SPUD won the same title last year for its environmental program known as ECO-SWARM or Ecological Solid Waste Reduction Management which implemented the Integrated & Sustainable Farming with livestock raising, Conservation & Preservation of Biodiversity that consist of a Butterfly Sanctuary & Aviary and the regular off–campus coastal cleanup activity.

The university also initiated a reforestation and Adopt a Tree Program in Lake Balinsasayao, Educational Curriculum Integration, the 5S’s Technology or Good Housekeeping and 4R’s or the Recover, Re-use, Recycle and Reduce plus a Composting and Vermi Culture Facility, said Duhaylungsod.

Recently, the school started the 4 in 1 Nature–Friendly Technology that stands for the Urine Diversion Dehydration Toilet, Green or Living Roof, Utilization of Recycled and Indigenous Materials and the Application of the Alternative & Renewable energy.

With these, different government and private sectors lauded the University for undertaking different environmental initiatives.

Moreover, SPUD is now offering a short–term modular course, a Certificate in Environmental Management supported by the League of Municipalities, DENR and TESDA. The said course is really intended for the various local government units, private and public agencies and individuals interested to be part of the environmental conservation and protection.

SPUD readies now for the national competition in a few months this year.

The nationwide contest dubbed, “2011 National Search for Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Schools,” is a direct response to Republic Act No. 9512 also known as the Environmental Awareness and Education Act of 2008. It is also the Philippine initiative in support to the ASEAN Environmental Education Action Plan (2008-2012).

Prizes for the national level include: P50,000 for 1st Prize; P40,000, 2nd Prize; P30,000, 3rd Prize, and plaques of recognition.

For the regional level, a certificate of recognition and a prize of P10,000 (in check) is given to regional finalists.

All winning entries, together with selected entries will be displayed during the national awarding ceremonies in November 2011, coinciding with the National Environmental Awareness Month celebration. (PIA NegOr/JCT)

REPOST:
Another Extreme Adventure in Mabinay

http://img801.imageshack.us/img801/2483/axn.png

SPELUNKING

Beneath the grounds of Negros Oriental are hundreds of natural mazes and labyriths. There are hundreds of caves spread all over the province. The most notable are in the towns of Mabinay, Bayawan City, and La Libertad.

Mabinay is known as the Cave Capital of the Philippines with more than 400 caves can be found in this town. Odloman Cave, the second longest cave in the country can be found here. The prevalence of limestone rock and extensive karst phenomena made it possible for the existence of these cave. From 1989 to 1990, a group of Belgian and Dutch researchers and adventurers came to explore and document the caves of Mabinay. The venture was called the Belgian Dutch Philippine Caving Expedition. If spelunking is your type of adventure then this must be a heaven for you.

Some of the caves in the province are:

Odloman Cave
Mabinay is where you can find the second longest cave in the country, the Odloman Cave System. It is also the sixth deepest cave. The Odloman Cave System has a length of 8870 meters and vertical range of 82 meters. Five entrances have been connected and the system consists of a mix of large and small galleries with some active stream ways. Exploration of this cave, however, is still incomplete.

Mambajo Cave
This cave has two entrance, one through the sunroof (Rappelling is the only way though this entrance) or through the underground river that flows inside the cave.

Pandalihan Cave
One of the hundred listed caves in Mabinay, it has huge caverns, where stalactites and stalagmites abound. The cave is accessible on foot and has an open ceiling at the opposite end.

Cayaso Cave
Features an underground river located just 1 km from the Poblacion Municipal Hall. The cave which is 3 kms. long and 6 feet wide, goes 20 feet down a winding stone pathway leading to an underground river of potable drinking water but without a visible outlet. Stalactites and stalagmites abound in different chambers. Shimmering spectacle of stalactites and stalagmites looking like little glacial turrets and pillars of salt. And they riddle the place. It ranks as the 9th longest cave in the Philippines.

Panligawan Cave
The most accessible of Mabinay’s caves, Panligawan is said to be where local swains of old would woo their sweethearts, it's name derived from the word ligaw which means "courtship."After that, we visited a nearby cave called

Pandalian Cave
Pandalian is at Agta word means “marriage.” The Agtas, an ethnic group belonging to larger group of people we commonly refer to as Negritos or Aeta, are the first inhabitants of Mabinay and other parts of Negros. It is said that Agta men brought women in Panligawan to court them and then to Pandalian to propose marriage. The Agta people, which is only found in this town, only numbered nine or more families, and that was according to a 1973 study. Their Western Malayo-Polynesian language is near extinction.

Crystal Cave
Aside from the stalactites and stalagmites, the Crystal Caves had columns, a formation where a stalactite and a stalagmite meet making a pillar. It also had draperies, which looked like wavy curtain hanging from the ceiling, and flowstones, which looked like draperies but were thicker and adhered to the wall of floor. It has a length of 209 meters and depth of 5 meters.

Habhaban Cave
It is situated six kilometers from Bayawan City proper, it is a subterranean hideaway considered as the ultimate in trekking adventure. It is an ecotourism destination for the serious spelunker and should be entered with caution only during the summer months. Reaching a 20-foot waterfall, a landmark feature not found elsewhere-inside its labyrinths and mazes is an ample reward for those who dare.

yes you need to use their own modem because their DSL is Cable-based, not the Phone DSL used by Globe, PLDT, Bayan, etc.

it is really reliable, i've been using SKY for more than 3 years now and i can still count the number of outages i encountered in that span of time, very minimal to zero occurrence.. only problem is, they put a cap on P2P usage (movie downloads, mp3 downloads) so if you're fond of downloading torrents, i suggest you stay away from SKY

Dumaguete bags Most Promising City award in CV
by Pia NegOr, August 12, 2011
Rachelle M. Nessia

DUMAGUETE CITY, August 12 (PIA) --- Dumaguete City bagged the "Most Promising City" award during the 7th Regional Nutrition Action Officers Congress and 2011 Grand Nutrition Awards in Cebu City on August 5, 2011.

The city was awarded for its best practices and innovative nutrition programs implemented in its barangays last year and the drop in the city's malnutrition rate for the past five years, according to City Nutrition Officer Lourdes Taburaza.

Three of the city's best practices that impressed the team of evaluators from the Regional Nutrition Council (RNC-7) were the Rabbit Dispersal Program, Healthy Start and Waste Segregation system in the barangays.

The Rabbit Dispersal Program is implemented in identified villages here under the Small Animal Dispersal project of the Office of the City Agriculture which is a member of the City Nutrition Council.

"This livestock program is one of the measures we implemented to combat malnutrition in the villages," Taburaza told the Philippine Information Agency in an interview.

The Healthy Start program is implemented thru the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) wherein Child Development workers in the barangays take care of working mothers' children aged zero to three years old.

On the other hand, all barangays in the city has been employing waste segregation practices under the city's Environment and Natural Resources Office (ENRO) to support the city's nutrition programs.

"A clean, sanitary environment will lead to good nutrition," said Taburaza.

One of the city's innovative programs also cited by the RNC-7 is the City Nutrition Office's (CNO) pig dispersal program that resulted to the now flourishing piggery business of livestock raiser Cecilia delos Reyes of Northern Junob, this city.

Delos Reyes was a beneficiary of said program back in 2007 during which she received one pig from CNO. "From that one pig, she was able to sustain and expand her livelihood and she is now raising ten sows," explained Taburaza.

The pig dispersal project is one of CNO's intervention programs implemented from the P50,000 cash grant the city received in 2007 as a CROWN awardee for maintaining a good performance in propagating nutrition plans for three consecutive years.

Said nutrition programs were responsible for reducing the city's malnutrition rate for the last five years, said Taburaza.

The malnutrition rate here in 2006 was pegged at 7.9%% and except for a slight increase in 2010, it gradually dropped in the following five years: 6.8% in 2007, 4.9% in 2008, 4.4% in 2009, 4.5% in 2010, and 4.1% in 2011.

The city nutritionist is positive that the city will keep up its award-winning performance in the next years. "We hope to win the Green Banner award next time," said Taburaza.

The Green Banner Award is the highest award granted by the RNC-7 to a local government unit for an "exemplary performance in managing its nutrition action plan."

Taburaza is set to meet with the city's village officials today to urge them to continue supporting the city's nutrition programs. "They should strengthen their nutrition councils and continue implementing their nutrition programs," she said.

Dumaguete City Mayor Manuel Sagarbarria has assured the availability of funds to support the city's nutrition programs especially for the underweight pre-schoolers and graders including pregnant mothers.

The city's supplemental feeding program has been expanded to include children from Grades 1 to 4 and underweight pregnant women with an annual budget of P2 million from local funds, while another P1.1 million has been allocated for the city's fresh milk feeding program. yes you need to use their own modem because their DSL is Cable-based, not the Phone DSL used by Globe, PLDT, Bayan, etc.

it is really reliable, i've been using SKY for more than 3 years now and i can still count the number of outages i encountered in that span of time, very minimal to zero occurrence.. only problem is, they put a cap on P2P usage (movie downloads, mp3 downloads) so if you're fond of downloading torrents, i suggest you stay away from SKY

That is because they are two different technologies. If using SKY broadband, just make sure you have RG 6 cables, connectors installed properly (clean, no ingress/egress) and no kinks, and have good quality splitters if you have their video service as well. If all your in-house cables are done right, you would not have any problems unless there is a cable outage in the area. DSL (which transmits data through the phone lines) can not match broadband speeds.

P2P programs are bandwidth hungry, and increases network traffic. thats why you get quality speeds with sky. i hav a p2p , so ill never get sky. :)

Dazzled by Dumaguete

...Dumaguete is a charming university town. The old soul in me can just feel the old-fashioned atmosphere as I entered the quaint Castillian house turned into an inn. It fronts the baywalk along Rizal Blvd where there is an array of cafes, restaurants and pubs. It was reminiscent of Sausalito in a third world country style.

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_yTB-Z1f31xg/TQRjzg7JQLI/AAAAAAAAAs0/CIgCk-5E4Eo/s640/L1060711.JPG

It was low tide as I strolled along the bay so I jumped over the breakwater and snapped a couple of photos.

Siliman University nestles in the city and I somehow wished I got to study in this environment. Siliman breeds writers and artists. Not that I didn't love my university, I just want to be wrapped around this aura.

Just passed by Perdices St. this afternoon and it looks like the voices here had been heard, they are cleaning up the spaghetti wires. They are neatly tying up those wires and removed those unwanted wires. We might see very orderly wirings soon.

Camella:Urban, country charm

A blend of the countryside’s charm and of urban living’s comfort awaits future homeowners of Camella homes in Dumaguete City.

Camella Dumaguete’s future residents will soon experience a refreshing sight and scent of pine trees surrounding the entire subdivision, coupled with a magnificent panoramic view of the famous Negros Oriental Twin Peaks.

Homeowners also get to enjoy the serenity of Camella Dumaguete’s lush gardens and meditation ponds fitting family picnics and get together. These are just among the many amenities, which include jogging trails and basketball court, among others, that Camella will be offering to promote a happier and healthier lifestyle.

Development in Camella Dumaguete is undeniable five months after its launching in February. Done are the subdivision’s underground drainage system and concreted roads. Construction of security fences and two-storey Italian-inspired model houses -- Carmela, Drina, Elaisa – begins this month.

All these are being made possible because of the overwhelming response of those who are keen to live in a secure and well-managed community.

Camella Dumaguete in Palinpinon Road, Candau-ay village continues to innovate to fit fast-changing needs of its future homeowners. It is part of the largest homebuilder in the Philippines, Vista Land & Lifescapes Inc., that has built over 250,000 houses in 21 provinces in 48 cities and municipalities, while carrying the commitment of serving the needs of its homeowners through continuous developments in different areas nationwide.

Ms. SU candidates feel safe in Dumaguete
By Reuel John F. Lumawag

The mistake of one person cannot define a City.

With that statement, candidates for this year’s Miss Silliman Pageant said they still consider Dumaguete as a safe place for students, and that it continues to deserve the monicker “City of Gentle People,” despite the daring Aug. 5 shooting of lawyer Archer Baldwin Martinez in his office along San Jose St., which eventually killed him.

The candidates, who spent the afternoon of Sunday, Aug. 7, interacting with the Dumaguete media at Robinson’s Place, also added that the incident should be a challenge to the local authorities to catch the culprit.

The press had two rounds of questioning the candidates. The first round required the press to ask one question to be answered by all candidates; the second round required the press to address one question to only three candidates.

On the resignation of Sen. Miguel Zubiri, the candidates had varying answers: Miss Engineering said that if the Senator were honest and did not do anything wrong, he should have faced Senate inquiry. Miss MassCom Gesta Gamo said what the Senator did is commendable and nationalistic but that it came way too late. Miss High School and Miss CBA stated that the Senator’s resignation was premature and not right since there is yet no proof he committed any wrongdoing.

The Miss Silliman 2011 is scheduled on Aug. 22 with the pre-pageant at 8 am at the Luce Auditorium; coronation night is at 7:30 pm at the Lamberto Macias Sports Complex.

Eleven candidates are vying for this year’s crown: Miss AS Gaiana Capilla, Miss Rehabilitative Sciences Etienne Chantal Codina, Miss SBE Malka Shaver, Miss Nursing Athena Xcylz Mision, Miss CBA Vanessa Bea Hinoguin, Miss Medicine Bianca Camille Bulaybulay, Miss Clinical & Laboratory Sciences Keziah Marie Utzurrum Montebon, Miss SPAG Audry Evelyn Woods, Miss Engineering Alexis Dawn Masangkay, Miss Education Genevive Sarah Tebio, and Miss MassCom Gesta Riva Gamo.

Miss Silliman is considered Asia’s longest running pageant beginning in 1946, with its first winner Miss Education Patria Obsequio crowned at the Amphitheater fronting the SU Church. (Reuel John Lumawag, intern)

Casocot, Casero launch book, art

http://dumaguetemetropost.com/clients/dumaguetemetropost/8-14-2011-9-56-19-PM-7612054.jpg

Uncommon Ordinary Magic is a rare breed—a combination art exhibit and book launch of two young Dumaguete artists at the start of their creative careers. The show is the first solo art exhibition of Hersley Ven Casero, in conjunction with the book launches of local fictionist Ian Rosales Casocot’s Heartbreak & Magic: Stories of Fantasy and Horror and Beautiful Accidents: Stories.

Casero, who is increasingly becoming known internationally for his expressive photography, explores in Uncommon Ordinary Magic his mastery in painting—his first love. In three sets of works—The Crowd, The 365 Project, and Heartbreak & Magic (the latter composed of his illustrations for Casocot’s similarly-titled book)—Casero depicts a heightened awareness of people and individuality in crowds, of celebrating the ordinary man in a time of pervasive social media, of perfect ordinariness of things elevated to a kind of magic.

Casocot, on the other hand, launches two collections of his fiction. Heartbreak & Magic, published by Anvil in 2011, collects his speculative fiction—science fiction, fantasy, and horror—some of which have won the top prize in the Philippine Graphic/Fiction Awards given out by FullyBooked and the author Neil Gaiman. His Beautiful Accidents, published by the University of the Philippines Press, also in 2011, collects his domestic realism, and aims to chart his growth as a writer. It contains stories that have won the Palanca Award and the NVM Gonzales Award. (PR)

Robinsons malls level up with cinema upgrades
By: Bayani San Diego Jr.
Philippine Daily Inquirer

Robinsons Movieworld joins SM and Ayala Center malls in offering online convenience to movie-watchers.

Robinsons’ Internet-based ticketing system is so user-friendly, it’s virtually “idiot-proof,” according to Rupert Japit of Rogue Digital, Inc., which created the site.

Streamlines

Designers say they made sure the Web page (robinsonsmovieworld.com) is streamlined and simple.

Roseann C. Villegas, PR manager, points out that, unlike other companies’ online services, Robinsons’ ticketing system has “no hidden costs, no registration fees and no Web charges.”

Movie watchers can book their tickets via their smartphones, iPads, laptops and PCs and avoid the hassle of long queues—especially for blockbuster movies.

Payments can be made through credit cards as of now, but the Robinsons team is looking into other modes of payment, like Paypal.

Japit notes that the ticketing site is protected because it is coursed through the commercial banking system (HSBC), “the same system used on Amazon.com or eBay.”

Upon accomplishing the online reservation e-form, customers will receive via e-mail or mobile phone a response with the confirmation code or reference number.

“Customers who purchased tickets online do not have to present a print out of the confirmation code/number,” Villegas says. “They can simply show the SMS or e-mail confirmation on their mobile phones to mall personnel.”

The ticketing service offers access to over 80 cinemas in the mall chain’s 17 locations nationwide—from Laoag in the north to as far south as General Santos City.

Since its August 1 launch, customer response has been “encouraging,” the team reports.

Online customers were not concentrated in Metro Manila, they stress. “There was interest even in the provinces. We got lots of reservations in Dumaguete, primarily from young people who wanted to avoid the long lines during screenings of the latest ‘Transformers’ and the ‘Harry Potter’ finale. We’re very optimistic about this new service.”

Popcorn, too

Apart from reserving seats, customers can order popcorn, drinks and other snack items online as well.

Mall executives vow to add new features to the online ticketing service to make movie-watching more convenient and relaxing

Robinsons Movieworld - Dumaguete is the first Movieworld branch outside Manila to activate it's online reservation services and it received a very satisfactory response from the local. In fact, you don't see much lines anymore since tickets are already mostly bought online through credit cards.. Credit card holders are shooting up, too..

People over cars
By: Cielito F. Habito
Philippine Daily Inquirer

CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS—Some 30 years ago, I rode my trusty bicycle to my classes here, and like other bikers, had to do so on the sidewalks as the motor vehicle traffic along the main thoroughfare, Massachusetts Avenue, was too scary to compete with. I am now delighted to see clearly demarcated bicycle lanes right on the street exclusively for cyclists’ use; motorists encroaching on this space are subject to a steep $100 fine. I learned that the city council adopted a Vehicle Trip Reduction Ordinance in the 1990s as part of a policy toward a sustainable future that includes encouraging all reasonable forms of non-automobile travel, including infrastructure modifications that would promote bicycling and walking.

In our own country, something very similar is brewing, and catching fire. Noted environmental lawyer and Ramon Magsaysay awardee Antonio Oposa Jr.—known for having won landmark class-action suits against the government to protect our forests and Manila Bay, among other things—is at it again. His new crusade aims to bring back the primacy of people in our cities which through time have been planned more and more for cars, to the neglect of the 95 percent among us who don’t own one. This time he is invoking a little-known provision in the Local Government Code that says only 1,000 registered voters in cities are needed to initiate a petition for the city council to propose or amend an ordinance (in municipalities and barangays, it takes only 100 and 50 voters respectively). He likewise cites Executive Order 774 (on the climate change program) declaring that “those who have less in wheels must have more in road.” Oposa has started with Cebu City, whose city council has so far been receptive to his “Road Revolution” campaign to allot 30 percent of city roads to pedestrians, 30 percent to bike riders, 30 percent to collective transportation and 10 percent to road gardens.

The city council promptly agreed to pilot it in six barangays in its Heritage District, where Cebu City was founded and where its oldest houses that survived the World War II bombing stand. A corresponding city ordinance is now being considered.

Meanwhile, support for the Road Revolution is snowballing. The City Council of Dumaguete City is reportedly initiating moves to declare portions of certain thoroughfares in the city as vehicle-free promenades, starting with Perdices Street and/or Rizal Boulevard. Similarly, the board of the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority has reportedly approved the “pedestrianization” of Dewey Avenue, inspired by the advocacies of the Road Revolution movement.

I wrote a few years ago in this column of the crusade waged by former Mayor Enrique Peñalosa of Bogota, Colombia, who has become a sort of folk hero among those working to make cities around the world more livable. His credo has been that cities are for people, not for cars. As mayor, he surprised many by declining a $15 billion highway program from donors, deciding instead to restrict car use and create quality public transport, amid strong criticism and even ridicule from detractors. The city decided that funds were better spent building a 35-kilometer “greenway” for cyclists and pedestrians, rather than an eight-lane highway proposed by foreign donors that would have primarily benefited those who own cars.

Peñalosa’s out-of-the-box reasoning is that transport, unlike most other development concerns, is a problem that gets worse as a society gets richer. He notes that building more road infrastructure in cities worldwide ultimately leads to more traffic jams, for one simple reason: supply creates even more demand. Without restrictions, building more roads leads more people to buy cars. Thus, he argues that expanding highways as a response to traffic jams is like putting out a fire with gasoline. He shows dozens of starkly contrasting photographs from cities around the world to prove his point. Against photos of cities with wide sidewalks and bikeways that make walking or biking pleasant for rich and poor alike, he juxtaposes photos of cities where pedestrians are forced onto the roadway, thus endangering their lives, because sidewalks are either taken over by parked vehicles or vendor stalls, are too narrow, or non-existent.

Indeed, investments in infrastructure can be anti-poor (and anti-children) if government fails to recognize that: (1) cars are owned by a small minority of the population in most places in the world, and (2) the only means of transport accessible to low income citizens in developing country cities (or children in all cities) is the bicycle.

Peñalosa and the Road Revolution adherents believe that a great city is one that provides much free joy: parks, sidewalks, waterfronts, sports facilities, libraries, quality public education, pedestrian promenades, marvelous waterfronts, and yes, protected bicycle lanes. The last, to Peñalosa, is a fitting symbol of democracy: It shows that a citizen on a $40 bicycle is just as important as one in a $40,000 car.

If we truly believe that cities are for people, then moves must be made to restrict car use. Cities around the world have already shown how, with congestion charges in London and Singapore, parking restrictions in Tokyo, car-free days, and so on. But more than bicycle lanes, cities must also provide a good mass transport system for all this to work. Clean Air Initiative-Asia, another international advocacy group, also pushes for more walkable cities.

All this demands that we all be willing to make a dramatic change in our lifestyles as well. At the rate our environmental sins are catching up with us, we really have no choice.

We have nothing against the host cities of these companies, of course. It's just that we have our own BPO industry to support and protect. Can't stop outsiders from hiring here but we can promote and campaign for the companies that have invested.

NegOr opens LGU-theme exhibit on Aug. 19
Pia NegOr, August 17, 2011
by Jennifer Catan-Tilos

DUMAGUETE CITY, Aug. 16 (PIA) -- The Negros Oriental government has set to open a first local government unit-themed exhibit on August 19 at 5:00 p.m. at Sidlakang Negros Village, this city.

Dubbed “Vallehermoso: The Beautiful Valley,” exhibit to be presented by the municipality of Vallehermoso through the Provincial Tourism Office to highlight the town and its pride-making assets and achievements.

Senior Tourism Operations Officer Myla Mae Abellana said the exhibit features the Negros Oriental Launching of the coffee table book “Vallehermoso” authored by Ms. Tess Lopez.

Abellana said Governor Roel Degamo and Vallehermoso Mayor Joniper Villegas are expected to grace the exhibit opening and book launching.

Copies of the coffee table book will be on sale at the lobby of Sidkang Negros administrative building.

Local government officials, various government offices, heads of schools and the academic community are expected to witness the activity.

Both the exhibit and coffee table book launching provide accessible opportunities to better get acquainted with the northern town’s rich history, culture and arts, tourist sites, and products including crafts and native delicacies, Abellana added.

The exhibit runs for two weeks until September 2. (PIA NegOr/JCT)

President Aquino III to inaugurate multi-million peso market complex in Bais City, Negros Oriental
.by Pna Dumaguete, August 18, 2011

DUMAGUETE CITY, Aug. 18 (PNA) – President Benigno Simeon Aquino III will lead in the blessing and inauguration of the P242-million modern market complex in Bais City, Negros Oriental on Sept. 7, according to Bais Mayor Karen Villanueva.

Mayor Villanueva on Thursday said she believes one of the reasons for the President to come to the inauguration of the said facility, dubbed the Mercado de Bais, is because it is one of a kind in the country.

Started during the term of her father, former Bais Mayor Hector Villanueva, the 100 percent completed project boasts of a sewage treatment plant, an ice-making plant, a cold storage system, a child-minding center, a traveler’s lounge and a private commercial area, according to Mayor Karen Villanueva.

Occupants of the existing satellite market in Bais City will be moved to the Mercado de Bais following the inauguration, she added.

Other activities for President Aquino III during his visit to Negros Oriental are still being arranged by the Presidential Management Staff, the Bais mayor also said. (PNA) JFP

@Pons, where did you hear the Diversion Road would start next year? I heard the Gov't already received P150M towards that project. Why shouldn't they start work now? Maayo unta. Once that road is done, that would really open up the upland barangays to development... There are many vacant lands there that would be brilliant places for depots to open, and if SM were wise, they would keep their eye open for this route, if they want to take the out of town market for their potential mall...

the lack of wires and posts, i attribute it to the wide angle of the photo (16:9 ratio), but if you'll look closer and zoom in, you can see some wires and posts on the edges :)

Pangitaa nang nagita ug 2nd hand nga canon DSLR 400d camera, kung makaamigo ka ug foreigner, their cameras are well kept and still in good condition even if sold 2nd hand. This camera is worth more than Php40k, but if you have a foreigner friend who wants to upgrade he/she could sell it below Php20k...Quite a good buy.

Canon 400D is quite bulky, though...

^^ true that, the foreign expats in the city just want to get rid of all their bulky stuff when they go back to their home countries.. i once had a Korean friend in college who sold to me his 1-hp aircon unit for just 1,000 pesos because he was in a hurry to go back to Korea

with regards to DSLR's, there's a big disadvantage: you need to buy additional lenses and external flash guns to take good pictures, especially if you want to do portraiture, strobist, macro, fish-eye, zoom, etc. and these lenses cost at least 10,000 each :ohno:

that's the reason i steered clear of DSLR's in the first place, because of this.. the free "kit lens" included in the package is really "bitin" and is only good for close-up photos. not to mention the bulk (you need an extra bag for travelling)

advanced point-and-shoots camera's are the way to go in the future, as they can rival DSLR's in terms of image quality

But I think the best cameras nowadays are the bridge DSLRS, or sometimes called as "hybrids" or mini DSLRS. They look like DSLRS but are not really DSLRS. They have many DSLR features such as powerful zoom. Many of them even have more powerful zoom than the DSLRS, and is really attractive for the journalist and the photographer on the go who have no time to mix DSLR features. It performs well in point and shoot mode. The best thing is they are lightweight, have manual features, and many of them could be fitted with filters. Almost all camera brands now have versions such as Nikon L100, a lot of the Fuji S-Series, Canon, Olympus, etc.

What I like about Fuji is that it is "Made in Japan", has many of the high end features with prices that are lower compared to the more established Canon, Nikon or Sony...By the way professional studios also use Fuji.

with regards to my Lumix LX5, it has the following capabilities, reasons why i chose it over bridge cams and DSLR's.

1) it can use a lens adapter to take on filters (CPL, ND, MC/UV), wide-angle lens, telephoto zoom lens, fisheye lens, and a lens hood.
2) it has a hot-shoe to take on big external flash guns and the ability to wirelessly control external flash guns either by radio frequency or slave strobe flashes
3. it has HD video (720p), either in exclusive AVCHD (used in indie films and advertisements) or Motion JPEG HD format
4) less bulky, weighs less, and is more compact and handy than a bridge cam.
5) full manual modes in both photo and video
6) provisions for a viewfinder (both electronic and optical glass)
7. it has tons of accessories available in the market, from branded to generic items, and it has a global cult following since professional photographers use it as their back-up camera.

my major qualm about Fuji bridge cams is that there is too much noise coming from the sensor especially when zooming, the lack of a flash hot-shoe, and a small sensor (same size with entry-level point-and-shoots)

my LX5 by the way is also made in Japan, with a Leica DC Vario-Summicron Lens made in Germany. It also has a Leica brother, named the Leica D-Lux 5 (http://en.leica-camera.com/photography/compact_cameras/d-lux_5/)

here are some photographic possibilities with the Lumix LX5 which influenced me in purchasing a unit

Depends on the model...For some S-Series they have flash shoe and bigger sensor. But again prices are higher but still lower than the more established brands carrying the same features.

Again, you have to know what you need. Some people are overloaded with cameras, having those big bulky DSLRs or expensive cameras but just do not know how to use them. It's better for you to have the talent and the skills first than have the money first and do not know how to use it...

Alinghi
August 20th, 2011, 09:14 AM
^^ yeah just like some people who buy DSLR's only to use it on Auto Mode (which never fails to deliver bad results, what a waste of money :ohno:)

or some people who buy DSLR's just as a status symbol (these are the people who use it as a necklace when roaming the malls and ending up with a sore neck afterwards )

indeed, the talent and skill to use the manual exposure modes of any camera is more important than bagging expensive equipment without any knowledge at all, although this can be mitigated by the presence of photography seminars, lahi ra jud ang "talent first before equipment" or "it's the indian, not the pana"

Would you believe that I was using one of the Nikon D models (these are the more expensive Nikon cameras, the cheapest I think is around Php27K), set it in auto mode, shot the whole night and out of the more than 100 shots I made I got only around 20 good shots. I inquired and found out that I still has to turn the lens everytime I make a shot, and that its built in flash is really no match to the dark night. So that's quite an experience with an expensive camera, and I concluded that having a camera is really on how a user uses it. Most often a point and shoot camera is good for most instances as we do not really have the time to compose our shots. However, if you are artistically inclined or doing it for business, then having a DSLR might really be a good choice. But then you have to master your camera first.
