It's such a shame that the despotic rulers of North Korea wasted so much effort on this piece of crap when the people have so many needs.

If this were on Kling (you know..the home world of the Klingons) this would be a 10. But since it's on Earth, I'll give it a 3..it's worth that much for its hieght and for the efforts of the workers who built it.

that is the case and crises of capitalism as well, albeit to a lesser degree. money never helps who need it most. if so -it would result in an instantanious utopia.

Eureka!
October 12th, 2008, 06:36 AM
Tall, but too wide for it's height. Looks to fat and the large expanse of glass would just make it look bland. Surely it is more known now for being a ruin than it would've been if complete ? :P

5.5/10.

PS, I want to see it left there as an experiment to see how long it will last and how nature will over-run it.

x2 -- except that i'd prefer to put him somewhere on the 54th floor, running freely (but too high to jump safely) and given a sporting chance before being crushed.

this building is 2/10 at best. would have been 1/10, except that they did actually make it to the top. otherwise, unfinished and horrible.
it is to architecture what Stalinism is to the human spirit.

got today from the Koryo Tours:

Ryugyong Hotel construction continues apace – Well known to lovers of unusual architecture as well as DPRK watchers in general the 105 floor pyramid-shaped Ryugyong Hotel in central Pyongyang is one of the most recognizable buildings in the North Korean capital. As mentioned in a previous newsletter, work resumed in May 2008 after a 16 year hiatus as a contract was signed with Egyptian company Orascom to make the building functional, if anyone knows how to build a pyramid it’s the Egyptians and although it looked at one stage as if total construction time would rival those at Giza, the Ryugyong has recently been undergoing a growth spurt with glass cladding spreading across two sides of the structure, and even the rare sight of electric lights inside being seen in the evenings as work goes on. Planned opening date for the hotel is April 15th 2012; the 100th anniversary of the birth of President Kim Il Sung, massive events will obviously be taking place at this time so book a tour now! Of course Koryo tours will have a full range of trips on offer at that time.

If the building wouldn't have had so many floors for such a short height; if the building wouldn't have had such an old fashion window style; if the building would have been taller, with less floors, and covered with glass, would probably had become in one of my favourites. The only good thing about this building is it innovative shape. Nice try. 5.5/10.

I gave it a 10 even though I'm not completely happy about it. On one hand it's an excellent modern skyscraper (when finished). On another it lacks unique Asian elements, like the ones found in Taipei 101, the Petronas Towers and the Jin Mao Tower. With the exception of the top floors that together look similar to the spire of Buddhist pagodas and stupas.

I give it a 8 out of 10, too bad it's not complete...I don't know why there's so much hate for this tower, as a skyscraper, it deserves some good recognition...I think the building shows power and it's kind of intimidating too, which is exactly the underlying message that the investor (NK government) wanted. I like the pyramid shape, and the cladding is good looking too.

If this building would just be unveiled in the US, everybody would be like, wow!!! how great, how spectacular! But the mere detail that is a N. Korean building changes the people's perception of it and they feel compelled for a reason to besmirch it and throw mud at it.
Which is not fair! I personally find it infinitely less tacky than the overwhelming US skyscrapers, especially those of Las Vegas.

Once fully complete, all Pyongyang and North Korea needs to do is have any future skyscraper development to be in the same futuristic vein. Then you will have a more futuristic looking skyline that blends in as opposed to 1 futuristic building in a commieblock style setting.

10/10 without any doubt, this beautiful, futuristic looking skyscraper is one of the most iconic underrated constructions ever built.

This is what people saying 9 years ago :DSad to say that'll never get completed. :(

There are too many floors in this building for it's height, about 2.9m high for each floor.

It's way too wide and does not fit in with any other aurrounding buildings.

I love this building so much, it looked really absolutely scary when unfinished. It must have been really something to watch this crazy building every day for such long time in the city full of fear and sorrow.. and such crazy structure above it. When finished it will look much less scary, but it looks still absolutely cool, like buildings from Blade Runner or even spaceship.

I give it a seven because it has potential. You never know, maybe in a few years they will finish it and it could look like in the picture that is inside the picture at the beggining of the thread. If they covered it with glass, it would be one of the best buildings in the world.

I posted this in June of 2003 on this thread

Here's a view from a few months ago of the unfinished Ryugyong Hotel from our hotel in Pyongyang. The government tour guides tried to ignore it and deflect any questions about. They blame the collapse of communism in the Soviet Union as the reason it was not completed.

Apparently it has not one but five revolving restaurants at the top. They love spinning restaurants in North Korea.

We visited North Korea after selling all our stuff and deciding to travel around the world for a year. You can see more at: http://www.changesinlongitude.com/

Cheers!
