Dont worry.. i 'try' not to let this stupidity get to me but it really gets me mad how ppl can be so cheap.

This is THE greatest skyline in the world.. other than chicago they are all imitations.

This is the only skyline in the world that deserves a PERFECT 10. It offers an amazing collection of skyscrapers from every historical era. Unlike today's buildings, many of these older structures will never be duplicated. Sorry Asia, you're a little late getting into the game.

10! New York invented the modern skyline. It is the epitome of vertical grandeur, filled with so many landmarks, towers, and vistas I don't see how some Chinese imitation could be more popular.

NEW YORK IS THE CAPITAL OF THE WORLD!

sebastian c
May 9th, 2004, 10:59 PM
The New York Skyline is of course the model of a modern skyline, but I´ll not give it 10 points.
Tow reasons:
1. Many of the towers are relatively old and do not have a great architecture; most towers look boxy and really not modern anymore.
2. The WTC was the heart of the NYC skyline and is now really missing..

Though it seems to be forbidden to vote anything else than 10, I give it 8/10.

The best skyline of the whole world, although it would be better if it would have at least 3 or 4 buildings over 400 meters. But this could change in relatively short time because in my opinion Hk and mainly Shanghai are growing faster.

Its a definite skyline in need of tall buildings. I mean Hong Kong has more 1000+ footers. When Freedom Tower and New York Times Tower are completed NY will be back. Plus it needs more buildings in the 800-900 foot area

I gave it a 5. I just don't like it very much. Sure, its got a lot of scrapers but seriously all I see are boxes. Not much architecture here. And it's got that huge gap imbetween lower and upper Manhattan, It's like two cities. Not very pleasing to me.

just too bad about the loss of the majestic twin towers, the downtown skyline isn't the same as it used to be. The wtc brought some variation between those 200 m towers, now it all seems a bit monotonous. I really hope the freedom tower brings back the impressive skyline new york deserves

I had to give it a 10. It is just simply the city you think of when in comes to 'skyscrapercity'. I don't even care for the architecture (i prefer modern buildings) but that doesn't matter, NYC simply is the best. I wish i'd be alive in 100 yrs. By then, NYC will once again be the skyscraper king, even if it is no longer the largest city.

I love the incredible massiveness of the skyline of manhattan, and the thickness and density of the skyscrapers. No other city has such tall examples of early skyscraper styles. A whole lotta gems in there. I rated the other two of the big three skylines (HK/CHI) 9.5, and I'll do the same here. But, only because the WTC is gone! When the new WTC stands downtown it will once again be perfect in my eyes. 9.5.... for now...

Looking at the NY skyline from the top of the ESB, especially the view to the north, is simply the most awesome sight in the world. When I first saw the Grand Canyon, I spent about 10 minutes staring at it. On one of my trips to the 86th floor, I spent more than two and a half hours taking it all in.

You know the scene in the Titanic movie where Jack stands at the tip of the ship and yells: "I am the king of the world!". That is what it feels like to be atop the ESB on a clear day.

OK the New York skyline is definitely not attractive from a side-on view, but I like the fact that it doesn't just stand there and look pretty - it actually functions as a living and breathing city, and isn't afraid to get its hands dirty. That's what is so good about NY. Plus, it looks amazing when you're actually looking out from IN the city (not that I've been there.) 9/10.

SIMPLY THE BEST, a ten out of ten is not suited for it, maybe a twenty out of ten!
New York, I love NYC!!!! Especially when I watch TRL, the view of Times Square with all the TV monitors, shops, cafes, restos, pubs, bars, TOWERS, and the old, 20s-80's feel. NYC's near perfect! Very clean, cosmopolitan, vibrant, wow, everything in it blends perfectly! I'm so excited for March 2005, here i come NY!

definately 10/10

But I really, really don't understand why some people on this forum vote 3 or less for this skyline. I truly don't understand what those people are doing on this forum, I can understand that you don't like some buildings or some different styles, but as a skyscraperlover you just have to respect this city's history and it's leading role in urban/skyline development.

I'm from Chicago, and New York is undeniably a 10. Only three skylines in the world deserve a 10--New York, Hong Kong, and Chicago

New York of course has two skylines. The reason for this: the island of Manhattan is actually composed of very sturdy bedrock at its southern tip, but that bedrock soon gives way to a soft layer unable to support very tall buildings. Then, the bedrock returns again at Midtown. This is why the skyline of Manhattan is so high at Lower Manhattan, only to lower itself significantly, and then rise back up to incredible heights at Midtown. Imagine if Lower Manhattan and Midtown were continuous? That'd be so amazing. Nevertheless, either Lower Manhattan or Midtown standing alone could blow away most of the competition.

Where I think New York has the edge on Chicago is in the following two respects (and I a lot of Chicago people are going to get on my case for this):
(1) Manhattan has so many mid-range buildings around 10-25 stories that it is able to sustain that dense, canyon feel (that I just dig so much) over a more widespread area. Chicago is definitely very dense, but that density drops off significantly after you get north of North Avenue (although the high-rises apartments continue in force in a thin strip along the lakefront).
(2) Although Chicago is one of the greatest architectural centers in the world, displaying a really broad away of styles, I think Manhattan has a slightly more historical feel to it. This is not to say that Chicago's architecture is not as varied as Manhattan's, but when I look at both skylines as a whole, Manhattan edges Chicago out. I think a strong case can be made for the fact that Chicago is filling in the area north of the Loop, known as River North, with some pretty nondescript architectural catastrophes.

It's a beautiful skyline. Manhattan Island was well used. I'm sure most of the people giving it a low rating are either jealous or just "want to see what happens." That's very sad guys. I doubt many people honestly think New York deserves a low rating, unless you don't like high-rises or anything. But since this is a skyscraper website, I'm not sure what one would be doing on this site for that reason.

the best view of NYC is when u drive from inland and you cross a bridge miles away, and on a clear day you can see down the river and accross the bay anf you are met with a giant wall of skyscrapers that covers the whole horizon. blew my socks off.

It goes without saying...of course it's the best skyline in the world. It's the benchmark for all cities to be rated against. It has a wonderful mix of architectural genre's creating a feast for the imagination. One only has to stand anywhere in Manhattan to feel the raw energy take you high.
However, competition should be embraced and it's good to see other cities around the globe "rising" to the occassion.

I'm pretty sure the picture is taken zoomed in towards the moon to make it look big. They do this in alot of movies and pictures to make the sun or moon look huge.

New York is a 10/10- but second to Hong Kong

New York needs more modern skyskrapers, if it gets the combonation of plentiful buildings both historical and modern it will be alot better. Still not better then HK though (b/c 1. I'm biased, and 2. HK has a better natural setting which brings it to a completely separate level from most other skylines)

Every great city skyline will get some a-hole who will rate it under 4...just people who have something against a city or got nothing better to do. The classic skyline, and yet so much more to come. There is nowhere that suits bold, imposing towers more than New York. No matter how tall, it is appropriate in NYC. New York City's scattering skyline leaves the world speechless. This city has to be one of the most top notched cities in the world, with a staggering average of 7.5 million people in one city. This is the true centre piece, and everyone knows about this city as well. With its skyscraper palace kingdom, there is no stopping the city from being what it is.
Though, I would like to prefer Hong Kong in terms of skyscraper quality in age, but New York has more, making it look like a close full of goodies piled up all in a good row. Another thing is that some areas of the city look outdated, including some of the buildings they have, not the skyscrapers, they are fine. New York looks like it is dingy in the day time with some really old apartment buildings. But it can't be compete though, New York is the big apple.
It's a good city for Spiderman. 10/10

It's not about quantity, but quality. Believe you me, NYC has both.
I give it a 8 - 8.5 It looks absolutely amazing! However, honestly, in my opinion, NYC needs to get away from the capitalist boxy 50 storey buildings, and go for something more elegant. The only example I can think of right now is Swiss Re in London (com'on I see it everyday!). But really, world class. Just add some curves to that skyline and you'll be building to the moon next!

Brilliant city, brilliant skyline, brilliant architecture. Especially my two favourites, The Empire State Builing, and off course, which may not be officially true but I refer it to TESBs younger brother, the Chrysler Building.
Just look at it!

I agree that the recent high-rises in NYC could be more adventurous, but I still rate it a 10.0 due to the sheer size and historical variety of buildings (1900's buildings, 1920's, 1950's-'60s, 1980s', and recent all have distinct designs and styles). The bridges and the rivers only add to the appeal.
