This thread is dedicated to discussions on urban green spaces.

Urban green spaces

http://www.panoramio.com/photos/original/1346116.jpg

The objectives of urban green spaces:

* protect natural environments;
* improve air quality within urban areas (maximise oxygen release, providing carbon dioxide sequestration);
* improve the social status of the neighbourhood, thus serve as a luxury for upscale residents nearby.

Urban green spaces reduce the amount of water that typically overloads urban lakes and streams.

• Urban green spaces can enhance or protect water quality in a variety of ways, such as protecting soil from erosion while improving infiltration rates into the soil instead of the storm sewer.
• Trees and other vegetation ameliorate local urban heat island effects through shading, evapotranspiration, and reducing summer cooling demands.
• The foliage found in green spaces improves air quality by reducing particulate air pollutants and gases such as ozone.
• By reducing summer cooling demands, vegetation helps reduce emissions from power plants.

• For particulate removal, species with high
ratios of leaf circumference to area and surface to
volume, and with leaf surface roughness, should
be favored.

• For gaseous pollutant removal, tree species
with high tolerance for urban environments
should be favored. These species have the highest
probability of maximum metabolic rates and,
therefore, stomatal opening. It is particularly
critical to favor species with a high resistance to
drought

hm, i've got something for this, a wildlife highway in the netherlands, it's to compensate a big jump in the development of my hometown Almere, so its on the edge of 'sub'urbanity, should be allowed too in here?. it will make connection between a (for dutch schale) large forest, and the famous swamp area 'oostvaardersplassen'.
Its also part of the EHS (ecological main infrastructure) of the Netherlands, wich is part of e european pan european ecological main infrastructure or something like that.

It will be a recreational area, with also protected area's for nature only.

http://flevoland.nl/_internal/cimg!0/kezki7aldn3xp7

^on the picture above you can see the planned area, left site of this ecological site will be developped by the city of almere within the next 15 years.
the project contains also 3 ecoducts, across a 'what is going to be' a 2x3 lane highway, a 2, or 4 track railway, and a regional road.
the project is supposed to be ready before 2012 and will connect 2 natureparks onto a total of 20K acres.

Urban Green Spaces in Paris (France):

Paris has nearly 2199 hectares of municipal parks, that's approximately 20% of its total surface. There are two large parks (Boulogne and Vincennes), more than 400 smaller parks, gardens and walking areas...

-La Villette

-Esplanade des Invalides

Largest gardens in Paris :

-Halles

-Agronomie tropicale

-Jardin d’Acclimatation

-Trocadéro

-Tuileries

Since 1995, the question of chemicals (such as fertilisers) has been questioned because of its negative impact on the environment. The measures implemented target :

The biological scheme: it consists in fighting the enemies of cultivation by using their predatory or natural parasites. The main objective is to reduce the amount of chemical pesticides used. Therefore as an alternative to chemical pesticides, insects and acarina can be used as auxiliaries to control the populations of insects that are harmful to plants. For example, ladybirds can help to control the attacks on plants as they will eat what destroys plants. Before ladybirds are released, a study has to be carried out and the number of parasites is counted in order to estimate how seriously infested the area is; one carries out a “trapping as a preliminary step” in order to count the parasites present and to estimate the extent of the damage they are likely to cause.

The integrated scheme: it consists in effectively combining the various means of a scheme: preventive measures involving a clever choice of “rustic” plants, a biological scheme, a chemical scheme using products which are compatible with the auxiliary insects.

For 15 years, the use of chemicals has decreased by 90%. That is due to improvement of knowledge, limiting interventions to what is barely essential, and the use of alternative methods. The use of chemicals is now only considered as a last resort when alternative methods have failed and when plants or people suffer a great deal (damage from caterpillars for example) and that all other alternative methods turned out to be inefficient.

Over the last 5 years, this effort has been continued and purchases of chemical products to treat plants have decreased by 30%.

In parks, gardeners are requested to follow the best forest practices. The ideal recipe in keeping with the ecosystem:

“lawns that are left to their natural cycles, thickets, wet areas and water, a lot of it” insists Philippe Jacob, of the Service of urban ecology at the Town of Paris.

One thus attracts a maximum of species without importing them, one ensures the diversity of habitats and one avoids the prevalence of one species over the other.

Biodiversity also means protection of rare species. The town of Paris puts the emphasis on the development of fauna and flora before undertaking any revamping of green areas.

An example from Nagpur:

Comment:

• Tree species of high tolerance to urban environment were selected.
• Decent foliage coverage.
• The area of green space is limited.

There exists two types of natural landscapes.

The first could be defined as a “Natural Manicured Landscape”. This is the landscape that citizens experience when walking through the squares and parks of cities.

It is the landscape of wide stretches of mown turf, tree-lined streets, large planters on pedestrian walkways, flowerbeds flanked by benches, isolated trees in unwelcoming squares and other similar elements.

In short, natural landscapes of this type are, in reality, artificial.

They contain few floral species that are practically incapable of sustaining wildlife.

Do you have information and images of urban green spaces of Brazilian cities (e.g. Sao Paulo, Belo Horizonte, Manaus, Belem, Recife, Cuiaba, Curitiba) or Tropical African cities (e.g. Douala, Matabo, Lagos, Kinshasa, Maputo)

Please post them in this thread, thank you.

In urban Singapore, green spaces are incorporated as much as possible into the urbanscape in some of the following ways:

1) Parks (can be full scale parks, gardens or interim green fields)
2) Park-connectors (these are long linear pedestrian routes linking parks. They are frequently found beside canals or are built over canals, thus saving space and adding greenery)
3) Streetside-landscaping
4) Sky gardens and green roofs.
5) Urban design controls (planning requirements imposed on developers mean they may set aside space for outdoor landscaping and open plazas)

these green spaces are all very apealling to the eye.:)
as part of an urban landscape, parks must be highly visited, to avoid becoming crime habitats.
perhaps a park of trees could be lit from benieth by colored lighting, creating a very wierd magical night feel...or something.

Because there is also a 135 km Water Defence Line of Amsterdam, which is a UNESCO world heritage site, there is also another protected area. It is a belt around Amsterdam where in the past it was not allowed to build brick buildings, nowadays even green area's are also protected as part of the water defence line.
