have a safe and happy new year everyone! i think 2012 will be a good year for toledo with the new casino opening, Jeep and GM powertrain addding jobs, the opening of the new downtown lofts and hopefully the start of development in the marina district by the dashing pacific group! Hopefully we have a little bit better weather this year so the i-475 widening and promedica parkway project can get back on track (the rain really set us back about 6 months on this thing)

Asian carp are a serious problem we need to handle before it gets here.. Being a fisherman myself I know how much the hobby means to the area. Go check out the Walleye run that possibly starts in a month or so here (depends on water temp) In the parking lots you'll see license plates from all over the country coming to the area to try and get a few limits of walleye (or pickerel to some of the old timers) The anglers stay in our hotels, camp in our campgrounds, shop in our local bait stores. It brings a lot of money to our area. Not many people get the chance to fish off a boat so the walleye run (or spawn) in the maumee is a lot of peoples only and best chance to catch one.

Once the carp get in the maumee its for certain they will make it to Lake Erie which will put one of the worlds best fisheries in jeopardy.. The Western Basin of Lake Erie is one of the top spots on the globe for fishing and theres no doubt that if they make it there the perch, bass, and walleye populations will be depleted which will be a huge blow to all of the region. I hope everyone takes this issue seriously and supports the fight against this invasive species

Second all this. Lake Erie is in trouble and needs to be protected at all costs. Between the toxic algae and threat of Asian carp, much needs to be done to ensure the survival of the fishing industry. No doubt western Lake Erie and the Maumee River are the premiere places in this country for walleye fishing.

Mudhen419

I agree with ya on the dock issue Pilliod... This would be the only casino i know of in the area that would have direct dock access.. They could have overnight dockage so people could stay a few days and sleep on there boat. This would be cheaper than building a hotel and I think would be a big draw.

Mudhen419
January 26th, 2012, 05:35 AM
The river is mainly known for the walleye but the lake would take a huge hit on our perch numbers and the lake erie footballs (small mouth bass) And yes we need to figure something out about this damn algae that covers the lake in the late summer

If Rossford was smart they would build an indoor/outdoor water park and some go-karts next to Bass Pro.. This would be a big draw to the area for families to go along with the outdoorsmen.. I wish they would have went through with the amphitheater project, but I'm glad the arena never went through. An Indoor sports facility would be nice to since there isnt really anything like that on this side of the river, Rock climbing, indoor soccer, some ice, maybe some basketball courts. i think there would be good demand for something like this

Mudhen419

I think oregon should have taken the bid from sunoil... The old coy school had to be evacuated many times due to gas leaks and smell from the refinery holding tanks across the street... Not many places will want to buy because it is directly across the street from the property. Sunoil already owns a lot of land in oregon and they just let it sit. Let sunoil purchase it with the condition to keep the land open for public use. I think the land behind it (more towards i-280 is more desireable now with the wheeling widening project and I heard in the pas that Bay Park hospital wanted to expand there facility across brown road. If it was possible it would be nice to see a bike/pedestrian trail built from the Bay Park entrance on Brown up to Pickle rd. Theres no sidewalks down Wheeling and I think woodville rd would benefit from this making it easier for peds to get to Great Eastern/Meijers without having to walk down wheeling. It would make it a shorter safer walk/ride as well for the 3 decent sized apartment complexes and the cresceus neighborhood

OH bill would make left lanes for passing only

Not doable in the real world. During high traffic times on I-75 and I-80/90 (and the giant highways in Columbus), this just isn't possible. Those left lanes are needed for extra capacity. And how do you really enforce this? It seems like a huge burden on already busy highway patrols.

The lofts are pretty sweet.. I havent been in them but have viewed many pics of them. My dads co-workers have been inside and said they are awesome. Last time i checked the website hadnt adjusted there prices yet but I saw somewhere that they lowered prices on rent for all the units

Mudhen419

And I agree with ya on the left hand lane issue.. 75 is only 2 lanes in north toledo during rush hour this will be impossible to go by. Im not for raising the speed limit, traffic fatalities will go up and gas mileage goes down after 65 mph so this will make people use more gas.

In the 2 oregon bike trail news posts i added on here they fail to mention the beginning of the trail in the western part of the city (The most populated area of the city.) The original bike lanes constructed in 1991? begin near starr ave and Wheeling Street and extend almost 2 miles on starr (both sides of the street) to Pearson Park, passing Starr Elementary and Fassett Middle Schools. So when this project is completed you will be able to ride on bike trails/lanes from Wheeling all the way to Maumee Bay State Park. 3 parks (Pearson, South Shore, and Maumee Bay) will be connected, 3 schools (Starr Fassett, and Clay High School) the Oregon Recreation Complex and the Oregon Municipal facility (Police Station, Mayors office, and Court)

Again after this is completed I'd love to see Oregon build another bike/walking trail thru the farm land between Pickle and Brown rds just east of Wheeling to connect the 3 apartment complexes and Cresceus Farms neighborhoods to the Woodville rd corridor and Bay Park community hospital. Im going to email the city with my idea hopefully they consider it

Marcos was founded and is still based in Toledo. My parents went to school with Pasquale "Pat" Giammarco and he opened his first location in Oregon Ohio on Starr Ave in 1978. Now there is 250 stores in 21 states and locations in the Bahamas. Since 2007 Marcos is the fastest growing pizza chain in America.

Marcos has excellent food, Pizzas arent the best I've had but I rank them pretty high up there (8 times out of 10 I get Marcos when ordering pizza. Price and Quality is definitely worth it). The Cheezybread is some of the best around though the subs are great too!

I worked as a delivery driver for them for a few months a few years back and they run a pretty good business. They are very clean and use all fresh ingredients, never frozen and the dough is made daily at the stores.

Marcos owner is currently tryin to open a new Italian Style restaurant in DT Toledo by 5th 3rd field I believe next door to the Blarney, hopefully this doesnt take away from one of my old favs Spaghetti Warehouse but I wish them luck. Cant wait to check it out!

6k at the walleye game last night... bad game till about 5 mins left and ended up losin 4-3. On the ride home was listening to the post game show and they were saying that the walleye are averaging just over 6k per game for the season at home which leads the ECHL in avg attendance! pretty good for a team that isnt playing very well

I love the direction downtown Toledo is heading in... more bars and restaurants could equal more nightlife, and make downtown a destination, although, IMO, it already is.

Trader Joe's, I saw a lot of them in Chicago last week, I guess it specializes in its own organic brand names. Downtown Toledo could use a grocery store. Maybe a couple of hotels, too. Too bad the Hotel Seagate is vacant, that would be a prime place.

Mudhen419
March 1st, 2012, 12:49 PM
Seems like whenever a new place opens, somewhere else closes down.. I hope they can all compete together, and yes i do agree we need some sort of grocery store in downtown to help lure more residents down there. The new loft apartments in the warehouse district are pretty awesome. More downtown living options is big for us and for someone living downtown its kinda a long drive to get to a grocery store. Hopefully the Dashing Pacific development on the east side will be a big draw to go along with the Casino going in. Both are 5 mins away or less from downtown. I wish the casino would have either gone in the marina district or in the downtown area

And havent heard anything about the Fiberglas tower lately aside from this: http://www.toledoblade.com/local/2012/02/09/Landmark-label-sought-for-vacant-skyscraper.htmlhttp://www.toledoblade.com/local/2012/02/09/Landmark-label-sought-for-vacant-skyscraper.html

You can add Woodville skate park to the list of ex woodville mall tenants that moved to Great Eastern though they moved in a few months before the mall closure. I have recently been working at Great Eastern due to my place of work moving and I was transferred there temporarily last month. The parking lot has a decent amount of cars in it daily even without an anchor store. The skate park adds more pedestrian traffic and is usually pretty busy especially in the winter time.

I really hope they dont start charging for street parking at events.. I dont mind the 3-4 block walk from the free spots if it saves me 5$ and sometimes its easier to get out of the downtown area if you are a little further away.. I also like going in the summer time ans standing outside the baseball stadium for a few innings to watch so if they eliminate the free parking I will probly not do this anymore

I've been saying for years that Oregon needs some sort of indoor rec facility.. They have the property available out at the current rec center with easy access from rt 2. Surrounding cities will also be drawn to this. An Ice Rink and indoor soccer would be huge and could bring in a lot of money while introducing something new to the area. With the gas prices going up people from the eastern suburbs will be even less likely to make the drive to maumee or sylvania for indoor facilities. I hope this becomes a reality

Major retail expansion called unlikely
Mall building is done, say local experts

It's sad to see the demise of the Franklin Park Mall, but I have no need to even go out there anymore. I live closer to Fallen Timbers and Levis anyways. I like that my family and I can walk around both malls in peace. We also have family near the Dayton area so if we need something a bit more than Fallen Timbers we go to The Greene's in Beavercreek Oh and the new Outlet mall just south of Dayton. I wish Toledo would get a nice outlet mall.
