I'm hoping that the interest Tetra Tech showed will at the very least be an initial step in the long term development of the mouth of swan creek.

I'm really pumped about Five Guys, they just opened one in Pittsburgh before I moved back here (late '06 or early '07 I think) and it was flat out awesome. When it opens I'll be there weekly until I get sick of burgers for a while...

hell yea lets get the HSR rollin!!!!

Whats everyonce stance on the casino issue? I personally support the issue no matter how many jobs and how much money is made atleast its being made in our state.

Only a little over 2 weeks till the Walleye start and still no goalie signed! Arena openhouse this weekend!!!!!!!!!!

I honestly don't care about casinos, but we might as well keep the money in Toledo as opposed to Detroit/Windsor. Toledo and Cincinnati have seen a lot of money leave their cities due to bordering states. I'll vote for it, but I'll never go to it.

With that said, Ohio needs to understand the economic effect has probably been grossly overstated (look at the source of those numbers, very biased). This won't save our state, not a chance, but at least it will give some people jobs in Cleveland, Toledo, Cincinnati, and Columbus. That's the main reason I'm voting for it. It's similar to how I feel about marijuana right now. An economic depression is the best time to legalize vices.

Well from what I have been hearing from people around me about 75 percent say they would like the casino to happen..... Jobs and Money going to our area are the high points
Saving people the 100 mile round trip to detroit was also stated a few times....Ill personally use the casino probly once a month depending on what kinda gaming will be there....

The only thing bad im hearing is about the supposed crime its going to create.. Which i think is some total BS..... Crime is going to happen anywhere.... And I dont see people taking the chance of commiting a crime to get money then taking another chance at blowing it in a casino..... And If the Casino is constructed at the Pilkington site I dont see people getting robbed leaving/coming into the casino.... Thats one of the problems I have heard about when people go to Motor City Casino... Its a rough neighborhood....

Where ya at Bonjour?? Hope yer finalizing a huge update for us!!!!!

Arena open house was awesome..... 8,000 people on both Sat and Sun for a free event.... and Considering there wasnt much going on except hockey practice and self tours of the arena (and a few autograph signings) it seemed like a very good draw.....
Ill be at WWE this sunday hope its a packed house!!!!!!

and one last note......

Construction begins for
$36M Stroh Center Bowling Green State University (BGSU) held a groundbreaking ceremony last month for the $36 million Stroh Center. The 4,700-seat, 131,000 square foot convocation center is scheduled for completion by late 2011.
Toledo Business Advantage October 2009 Edition
http://www.toledobiz.com/

Southfield, Michigan-based Rossetti Associates, Inc. and Cleveland-based URS Group, Inc. have
provided design services for the Center. According to the design team, the building’s look is
intended to represent the aspirations of BGSU athletics. Prominently sited on Wooster Street and
anchoring the southern edge of the athletic campus, the building will mark the eastern gateway to
the university.

The firms explained that the selection of materials is also symbolic, as the building will be clad in
metallic and glass materials representing the freshness of the university’s future while grounded in
masonry, representing the foundation of its tradition.

“First impressions mean a lot – and the Stroh Center will be a great first impression of BGSU for
many people,” stated Greg Christopher, assistant vice president of student affairs and athletic
activities.

The Stroh Center is named for Kermit F. and Mary Lu Stroh and their family, longtime BGSU
supporters who donated $7.7 million for the arena project last year. According to BGSU, the Stroh
family’s contribution is the largest single private gift in BGSU’s nearly 100-year history.

“The Stroh Center will provide us with one of the best venues in the country, not just in the
conference,” Kermit Stroh explained. “We want opponents to know they are in for a tough fight
every time they come to BG.”

A general use building, the Center will be funded with a combination of private dollars and a
student fee. An undergraduate student election was held in late March to affirm or overturn the
Undergraduate Student Government’s (USG) endorsement of a student fee to help fund the Stroh
Center; 2,630 students voted to support the original decision and 1,182 voted against it.

The private fundraising goal for the Stroh Center is $14 million with $22 million borrowed for the
project. The approximate fee of $60 per semester ($50 for the Stroh Center and $10 for new
student parking to replace the parking spaces lost to the Stroh Center) will have “sunrise” and
“sunset” clauses, so it won’t begin until the Stroh Center is completed in 2011 and it will end when
the building’s debt service has been paid.

The new parking spaces will be created west of Perry Field House. The marching band practice
area near the field house will be relocated nearby.

“We’re extremely gratified that our students have demonstrated their support for the Stroh Center,”
stated University president Carol Cartwright. “They clearly understand that this project is critical to
the future of BGSU.”

The arena will be the site of new student convocations, graduate ceremonies, concerts, high-profile
speakers, and other campus and community events. In addition, it will serve as the new home for
Falcon basketball and volleyball. According to BGSU, the Stroh Center will be a showcase facility
that will help recruit and retain students. It will also generate outside revenue through the events and
serve as a “front porch” for campus as the most visible entryway to BGSU.

It is estimated that around 500,000 people a year will use the new facility.

Early plans included a consideration of an ice surface to create a dual-use facility for the hockey
team, but this option proved to be both too costly and impractical.

The Stroh Center will replace Anderson Arena, the oldest arena in the Mid-American Conference
(MAC) that has not undergone major renovations. It is also not easily accessible to those with
disabilities and is becoming increasingly expensive to maintain and operate. In addition, according
to BGSU, the configuration and acoustics make it poorly suited for graduation ceremonies,
concerts, and other campus events.

In the short-term, BGSU gymnastics and the athletic department’s academic support services will
move into the areas vacated in Anderson. ROTC will also remain in Memorial Hall.

As in Anderson Arena, students will have their own section in the new Stroh Center.

When completed, the Stroh Center will be the most environmentally friendly building on campus,
according to BGSU. The building is designed to meet specifications for Leadership in Energy and
Environmental Design (LEED) certification.

BGSU’s Building Dreams Campaign that began in 2002 identified the Stroh Center as a priority
for the school. The Stroh Center and the $40 million, 93,000 square foot Wolfe Center for the Arts
that broke ground in April are the first in a series of major building and facility upgrades that the
university will launch in the next few years. These projects include renovation of the student health
center, major upgrades to dining facilities and residence halls, and renovation plans for the
university’s oldest buildings – Hanna, Moseley, and University Halls. BGSU will also make key
upgrades to campus infrastructure and implement an energy conservation plan.

Despite the recent struggles of the economy, BGSU explained that it is a good time to build. Due
to poor economic conditions, construction costs are the lowest in recent memory, and interest
rates for borrowing money are also very favorable. Additionally, students won’t be financially
affected until the Stroh Center opens two years from now.

“My late wife, Mary Lu, was a strong believer in a Bowling Green education and the Bowling Green
experience,” Stroh stated. “Whether it is a concert, a graduation, or a community gathering, our BG
friends and family will enjoy a truly first-class experience in the Stroh Center.”

CSX hub eyed for new exports
Toledo Business Advantage October 2009 Edition
http://www.toledobiz.com/

A meeting was held recently in Bowling Green, Ohio to discuss the ways in which the $175 million
Northwest Ohio Intermodal Facility in North Baltimore will provide innovative solutions for the
transport of goods and commodities in the region, across the country, and around the world,
according to the organizers.

Presenters at the meeting included Carl Warren, director strategic infrastructure, CSX Intermodal;
Rusty Orben, director of public affairs, Ohio CSX Transportation; John Lumpe, executive director,
Ohio Soybean Council; and Jay Kelley, business development manager, Adayana Agribusiness.

The facility is expected to offer the potential for significant new business investment and job growth
in northwest Ohio. Before the intermodal facility even opens, new logistics opportunities are being
surfaced. Thousands of containers will move goods by rail into the terminal, and an opportunity is
surfacing to fill empty containers that will return overseas to be reloaded.

Agricultural exporters are examining the possibility of using these empty containers to ship
products grown in the region to foreign markets.

According to the Ohio Soybean Council, the Northwest Ohio Intermodal Terminal will be a key part
of the National Gateway Initiative, which will position northwest Ohio as a major player in domestic
and international logistics, creating opportunities for farmers and agricultural companies in the
area to ship value-added soybeans and grains via container trains.

Lumpe stated, “Our interest is very clear here; we are representing the soybean farmers’ interest…
This facility is very key to what’s going to help affect and help drive the economy for agriculture in
this area.”

He noted that the United States is the sixth largest exporter of soybeans in the world after China,
Mexico, Japan, Taiwan, and Indonesia. More than half of the United States’ soybeans are
exported. Additionally, 11% of the soybeans are raised within a 25-mile radius of North Baltimore
while 31% are within a 50-mile radius.

“That’s one of the reasons why we’re here,” Lumpe added. “A lot of our crop is up here. So this is
very important to the industry of agriculture.”

“The big picture is that the facility…is going to put Wood County at the center of a very significant
transportation and distribution system that is going to spell prosperity for all sectors of the
economy, especially agriculture,” stated Tom Blaha, executive director, Wood County Economic
Development Commission (WCEDC). “The economic development commission is not the
adversary of agribusiness but is in fact an ally of agriculture. And our mandate is to grow the
economy.”

Ground was broken in mid-August for the new intermodal terminal, which is designed to support
the efficient and environmentally beneficial movement of containers between rail and truck. The
majority of the earthwork has been completed and more than 10,000 feet of track has been
assembled. The site is scheduled to open in the second quarter of 2011.

The new Northwest Ohio Intermodal Terminal will employ more than 200 people when fully
operational in 2011 with 400 more jobs to be created during the construction phase. Over the next
10 years, more than 2,600 direct and indirect jobs will be created as a result of the facility.

The terminal will serve as the distribution hub for anything that can be bought at a retailer – from
household electronic equipment to clothing. The facility is the cornerstone of the National Gateway,
an $840 million, multi-state infrastructure initiative aimed at creating an efficient and
environmentally friendly freight link between the mid-Atlantic ports and the Midwest.

In Ohio, the National Gateway program anticipates $30 million in Federal funding, $30 million in
State funding, and a $175 million investment by CSX and its affiliates. The total investment will
create nearly $700 million in public benefits – more than $10 in benefits for every $1 of public
money invested.

Public funding will be used primarily to raise the clearances under bridges and tunnels, enabling
the movement of double-stack railcars. These rail cars allow each train to carry twice the load–
significantly reducing fuel use, air pollution, carbon emissions, and highway congestion. Private
funding from CSX and its affiliates will be primarily dedicated to building state-of-the-art,
environmentally friendly terminals, like the one to be built in northwest Ohio.

According to Orben, double stacking intermodal containers allows more freight to be shipped on
the same number of trains. Additionally, rail is more fuel-efficient than trucks, as an average train
can carry a ton of freight more than 423 miles on a gallon of fuel while at the same time being
environmentally friendly. One train can carry the load of more than 280 trucks.

Warren also noted that the facility allows CSX to extend capacity in places where the company has
existing hubs. The North Baltimore facility frees up Chicago and Cleveland hubs, extending the life
and practical capacity of those facilities, putting more capacity in those markets as well.

The Northwest Ohio Terminal will be built and operated by The Evansville Western Railway, Inc. of
Paducah, Kentucky, an affiliate of CSX.

Given the economy, they should hold off on demolition. That's money that doesn't need to be spent. We don't need another hole downtown either, especially considering this is near the block-sized hole at the former Paramount Theater site.

How about that for a first weekend!!!!! Toledo Walleye take 2 of 3 in the very first series at LCA.... Even though opening night the Walleye took an L they stil played strong and held in there to win the first series of the season against a Florida team that was one of the best in the ECHL last season.... Even though I wasnt there to witness it first hand I watched all 3 games as they were televised on BCSN. My first game will be this weekend vs Trenton.

I did however get to see the WWE raw live tour last Sunday... It was a pretty packed arena for a house show. I had a very good time havent been to a live wrestling event in a few years but I was glad to see everyone enjoying the wrestling and there first looks at the new arena......

The pyro before the Walleye starting line ups is pretty cool too!

Any news on the Bullfrogs? I have been hearing rumors that they might not have a league next year.... I know this was brought up a few months ago but I was wondering if anything came up?

And also... Has UT started construction on the project to redo the area around ottawa river? The drawings i saw a while back looked great was wondering if there was any progress

The news around the Bullfrogs are nothing but speculations at this point, Arena Football league is the one that is being shut down but A2 league is still running.

The project next to the newly, renovated John Savage Arena is going to be the new indoor sports facility and it's quite huge from the view on Douglas Road. The expanded Stranahan Business Hall on the main campus is coming along quite nicely and I am very impressed in the last 10 years of endless efforts to "cobblestone" all the buildings on the UT Main Campus. Anyone know whats going on the Vistula Manor? Bulldozers were clearing land last week and also downtown The Spaghetti Warehouse is currently undergoing renovations. Hope it still has that old feeling in there.... I loves it when It was like a cave in there now from what I have seen it will lookvery bright and modern.

Marina District.......... Drove down Marina Drive the other day when I was coming back from The Warehouse and noticed on the Marina Side of the old edison plant there was some bulldozers knocking stuff down on the plant and they had constructed a concrete wall to keep people out id imagine.

The Arena..... I attended my first Walleye game last weekend..... There was a lot I liked and there was also some things I didnt agree with. Whats up with no access to the upper level? You have to have a ticket up there? Bullisht! There was like a thousand empty seats up there and I guarentee all those people werent at the ICE BAR or whatever its called. The bulldozer clearing behind Vistula Manor on Huron was being done on open space; I believe it's either an expansion for more living units or parking. There was no news or planning information that I could find on this one.

The Spaghetti Warehouse was long overdue for some TLC exterior and interior-wise since they haven't done anything since the Fifth Third Field made its debut in downtown. I am kind of hoping those darn windows either gets replaced or repaired/repainted before the renovations are completed; either way it would be a massive improvement.

Marina District progress is still ongoing and noticeable especially the Acme Plant, if Issue 3 passes, I think this building would be perfect for the new casino instead of the location off of Miami Street on the border of Toledo-Rossford.

Since the new arena opened, I have not heard any complaints about the parking since most are familiar of where to go and it's accessible.

What windows are you talking about Bonjour? It looks to me like the big half circle windows in the front have been replaced.. I wish they would have kept them I liked how they looked. They took down the awning (sp?) that was over the entrance as well I hope they bring this back!

Another thing on the arena..... They have added some signage on the interior. Its only an advertisement for Corner Dental but It looks pretty cool hanging from the second level. I think more small things like this will be added soon! I saw in the pages of opinion of the blade some guy wrote in saying he felt the American flag was to small and was hard to find and he hoped they added a bigger one hanging over center ice. I also cant wait for the other public art they will soon be installing.

One more thing... As I was driving down 75 to Columbus I noticed dozers moving around in the parking lots south of Doyt Perry Stadium. Was wondering if this was part of the Stroh Center construction?

I am talking about the windows on the second and third floors; the bottom floor windows are fine.

Yes, it is the Stroh Center construction nearby Doyt Perry Stadium.

Yeah, Stroh's.

The Arena..... I attended my first Walleye game last weekend..... There was a lot I liked and there was also some things I didnt agree with. Whats up with no access to the upper level? You have to have a ticket up there? Bullisht!

Considering this is a publicly-funded municipal arena, that it bullshit!

Marina District.......... Drove down Marina Drive the other day when I was coming back from The Warehouse and noticed on the Marina Side of the old edison plant there was some bulldozers knocking stuff down on the plant and they had constructed a concrete wall to keep people out id imagine.

The original historic building will be saved. I think the newer annexes were set to come down some time ago. Perhaps it was delayed and they're doing that now. The power plant is the best location for a casino and could be waterfront, plus it's much closer to Downtown. This location at the LOF waste pits is completely cut off from the city. Unfortunately, Issue 3 makes it law that the only locations the casinos can be built are those that were voted on. I hope there's a way to fight that. The casino belongs in the Marina District or maybe as infill in Uptown. I've been saying all year the old Acme Power Plant would make the coolest casino in the world.

Paddington
November 7th, 2009, 04:10 AM
He's a rich cunt from the Northwest suburbs. His parents are good friends with Block, the publisher of the Toledo Blade. Block has been shilling for this guy for years, plugging his face with puff pieces below almost daily for the better part of a decade. Block has control over Toledo like no one man has over any other city in America BTW. He owns the only major daily paper, the cable station, and a TV channel. He regularly uses his paper to settle personal scores, and also to prop up nitwits like Carty Finkbeiner. Toledo dodged a major bullet with this Ben Konop turd not being elected.

Pilliod Njaim

It wasn't even remotely close in the primaries. Bell and Wilkowski slaughtered the competition. But the hatred towards Konop is unfounded in 99% of cases. The average person who talks shit about Konop has never even met him. And say what you want about the Blade (obviously they are influential), but Konop certainly didn't have any help from the big four television stations. In fact, it was the exact opposite.

He lost in the mayoral primary race, one place from the bottom which he only beat Opal Covey which speaks volume.

On my way downtown i drove up 280 to front and checked out the front street project. Thet have light posts and traffic light poles up. Looks like they should be using atleast part of this within the next month weather permitting.

The YWCA downtown looks great. I also saw theres some construction on another building near the YWCA.

All if not most vacant Food Town buildings in this region remains to be empty and undevelopable for some reason, just like the Kmart Tire/Auto Store.

Be specific about what construction is nearby YWCA, it may be the housing units for Cherry Street Mission or the redevelopment of the former Hylant Insurance Building for a newly relocated charter school.

It's the sweeps month on FOX 36 about the Marina District story, it's irrelevant in my book because they are trying to create controversy out of something they clearly do not understand from a development standpoint. Nothing gets built overnight.

The Fiberglas Tower and its replacement/new parking garage will begin sometime in the New Year because Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority will be involved; they had to come up with the design, funding, and plans prior starting the project. Sucks about the Frogs.... Even though arena ball isnt as popular as the NFL or college its still a cool game. Hard hits and lots of points being scored is always good in my book. Hopefully they can get something going next year and start in 2011.

I wonder why the Cherry Street bridge only has half its lights? It looks weird, like a last minute budget cut or something. One of the reasons the High-Level Bridge is my favorite bridge in Ohio is not only the fact it's a big, graceful suspension bridge (my favorite type of bridge by far), but because it has great lighting at night. And hey, there's nothing that can be done about the darkness of the Fiberglass Tower other than photoshopping in lights, but that'd be distorting reality in a pretty dramatic way. We've got to live with its darkness until we reoccupy it. There's no point in hiding from reality (interestingly, many outsiders ask why the tower is dark).

Also, I've been doing some photos of the Glass City Skyway and have noticed a few things that could make it look better:

A. The stainless steel cables need to be lit better at night. At best, it looks like a light saber. At worst, it looks like a pointy 400-foot dildo sticking out of the Maumee River.
B. The mutli-color array kind of looks corny IMO. I think an all neon green or neon blue pylon would look best.
C. Honestly, I think I would have preferred a second large suspension bridge in Toledo instead of the cable stay, but with proper lighting, it could look a lot better at night. More can be done to make it stand out. On top of better cable lighting, maybe the bridge deck could be lit up. Part of the reason I think High-Level/Anthony Wayne trumps Glass City Skyway is because the whole shape of the suspension bridge is outlined with lighting. Lighting is so key to a bridge looking good at night, and it's even more important when over water. With Glass City Skyway, it looks like they really cheaped out on lighting.

Seriously, this is the best we could do with lighting?

GREAT NEWS FOR THE EASTSIDE!!!!!! Cant wait to see the finished product at the Spaghetti Warehouse as well.....

The Hi Level is your fav bridge in Ohio?? I agree its pretty cool... Wish theyd replace the missing light beacons (1 missing from each tower)

I personally love the new bridge.... I like the fact that it changes..... Like X-mas its green and red and during winter its blue with falling snowflakes that accumulate at the bottom and pile up. The Fourth of July Flag design is pretty sweet too...

and 1 last thing on the King bridge..... Even though the lights are missing this bridge is awesome now that all the work to it is done.... Hopefully that nightmare doesnt happen again anytime soon (bridge closure)

This is an article in last weekends blade talking about the new retail strip going up in Oregon... A Day before the article came out I had a chance to talk to the new Mayor of Oregon Mike Seferian.. He seems like a real good guy. I went to school with some of his kids even played baseball in a tournament with his one son.

Mike owns a garage on Starr and Dearborne on the east side. I have never heard one comlaint about the business and always hear praises for there work. I hope he runs the city like he runs the shop.

From what I heard from him There will be another strip built directly behind the one thats currently being built... Im pretty sure this eliminates a hotel from being built in that area.

Mike also told me Oregon was being considered for a new Italian Restaurant. Not sure what it is called but he told me it would be equal to or above mancys italian. o it will be pretty expensive and he said the next closest location of that restaurant is in Troy Michigan? So maybe you someone can put the clues together and figure out what this place is.... Mike hopes they can put the restaurant somewhere on the Water (the bay)

Cant wait to check out the New Front Street...... I like using the shortcut from Front to Starr I dont think itll be there to much longer though. I think this will help out the marina project once its all completed. Pedestrian and Bike traffic will definatly pick up!

Theres a blade article somewhere a few days back talking about the new casino. Construction should start end of next year. Multi level parking garage 250000 sq ft facility.......

UT athletics site has pics of the Indoor practice facility being built next to Savage Arena. Construction is nearly complete. The new Track venue outside is pretty nice lookin too!

In the past weeks metro press there was an article that brought up the Wales Rd overpass topic again... I would love to see this project happen. I take 75 from Perrysburg to East Toledo/Oregon are a lot and this would definatly be a better alternative to 795. It will also be good for kids coming from the Oregon/Northood areas that go to Owens. Those train tracks are pretty busy.

Also I just read an article on Mobile news 11 about the widening of I-75 from Perrysburg to Findlay from 4 to 6 lanes. The Project isnt official or even in to much of a planning stage but it says it could be done in 10 years at the earliest.

Northwood is a lost cause, IMHO.

If they are going to make I-75 from 4 to 6 lanes, then they should do it from the stateline all the way to Lima at least; there are parts of I-75 that isn't 6 lanes north of the I-75/475 interchange and it is much needed. Also I-475 from Perrysburg to Central Avenue should be 4 to 6 lanes as well.

I don't mean to hate on UT (since this is common at most major universities), but I think public schools are spending way too much money on athletic facilities these days. I'd rather see that money go into urbanizing Dorr or something...

The bridge being converted to local use is an excellent infrastructure addition in Toledo. The North Side has long needed a pedestrian/bike bridge across the Maumee River. Also, I'm pumped to hear they're reconnecting the streets under the new bridge in North Toledo. Were these always cut off, or did they get cut off by the construction of Glass City Skyway?

Mudhen419
December 16th, 2009, 12:06 AM
Hey Pilliod were u aware that the Craig Bridge had Pedestrian crossing in the past? Theres always been sidewalks on both sides of the bridge....

I dont know if Dorr street would do much for UT. I think building new athletic facilities is a good idea. I think new facilities would draw more than redoing Dorr.

The North end streets were cut off by the old 280. I do believe though that one street lost its overpass over the old 280 trench when the skyway was built

Not sure what the time frame is on this development, though... But man, when it happens it will be truly transformative.

I am sad of their news in closing but hoping that they would not give up. Toledo DTI, Warehouse District Association or the city economic department should help them get a new location or whatnot if they decide to stay open. I understand their current location dramatically changed their businesses due to the closing of Superior Street and the recent opening of the new arena which was impacted by the traffic pattern change of downtown; however, they see a silver-lining and should relocate at these recommended site(s) with plenty of foot traffic and parking:

1. 118 S. Superior Street
2. 10 S. Superior Street
3. 25 S. Saint Clair Street
4. 2 S. Saint Clair Street
5. 3 N. Saint Clair Street
6. 136 N. Summit Street

Good to see u back around for the time being bonjour.... your update will keep me busy for a little while.

Im lovin the Maritime news. It would be weird seein the Boyer anywhere else but its current place.. But if it ties in with the museum then the move would defintaly be benefitial. Its probly over a mile from the marina district site to the current site of the Boyer. Long walk for field trippers, old timers or boaters tryin to check out the museum and ship. Hey this could be the unofficial start to the marina district!

Thank you Scott Hamilton for contributing to where you started out from.... I wish more local celebs would contribute to our area....... (Katie Holmes where you at?? Lyfe Jennings?? Jimmy Jackson i dont know what happened with you)

Pilliod Njaim

I honestly don't want to see the ship moved downriver. It will dramatically change my favorite skyline shot- the view from the High-Level Bridge with the ship in the foreground. I kind of wish Toledo got a second museum ship to put at the Marina District. Though that's got to be a pipe dream given the economy around here. It's hard enough raising money for the drydocking of the Boyer.

These classic straight-deck lake freighers are beautiful vessels, and so many have tragically gone to the scrapyard. It's a damn shame as they are the prettiest ships in the world. Nowhere else do you see those tall forward pilot houses and those rounded, undercut, graceful sterns. It harkens back to the peak of shipbuilding, an era when the Great Lakes ports were king of the world. I'd like to see as many of these preserved as possible (either as functioning freighters or as museum ships). And hell, it'd be sweet if new ships were built in this classic style. The stuff from the 1970's and later is nowhere near as pretty (no forward pilot house, straight stern, etc.). Modern ships look too utilitarian. The beauty of the classic Great Lakes straight-decker is that it mixes elegance with industry. They're floating pieces of industrial art.

Hope everyone had a safe and happy new year.... I was in NYC with some friends and my computer was down so after the delay heres my wish list for toledo......

1. greenbelt extension. Not sure if this is still being discussed but Id love for this to become a reality. It will shorten some peoples travel to get on 280 and to down town, and Id love to see the bike trail extended out that way as well

2.Have the AW trail entrance to downtown re-done. There was something posted a while back about this with a drawn up picture of how it could look..... I think it had a fountain and nice landscaping.... Maybe an arch welcoming people into downtown?

3. Some sort of development at the Marina District or the Swan Creek Tetra Tech properties..... Did tetra pull out? If the Marina district is going to flop which i Hope it doesnt then atleast we will have some sort of nice park along the riverfront... Maybe a smaller scaled San Antonio River walk along Swan Creek would be better.... Since its closer to the ball park and arena maybe if the focus was on that then we could make something happen.... Either way development at either place would be beneficial to whats going on in the city.

4.Indoor sports facility on the East side (or east suburbs) There is huge demand for ice time and if the ice house closes down then this will be in even higher demand... Lake Clay Waite and Genoa and fremont have teams that would all love the reduced drive time to the closer more available ice..... And also I know Oregon is a big soccer city. Im sure theyd love to have some indoor soccer around there.

Also, did anyone see the article about the guy who was complaining about the new arenas seats being to small? Whats up with that Blade? That guy was pretty big why are you tryin to hurt the arenas image?

Metro Press: Oregon projects to be completed in 2010....... Wheeling Widening (which has started) Turning lanes and traffic light at Starr and Coy ( I lived in that area for a long period in my life... Its needed a light there for a while now) I just hope they dont mess up the Starr Ave Bike trail by doing this. And the Water tower should be done by summer it has 2x the capacity of the old tower behind kroger on navarre

The Swan Creek project is dead. Tetra Tech did pull out. It's still a great idea though. Hopefully when the economy recovers around here, someone else comes along to do it.

Oh yea I also read somewhere that Dillins Marina District money is enroute to Toledo coming from out of country........

Pilliod Njaim
January 8th, 2010, 11:43 PM
^As far as I know, there is still lots of support for the Marina District and it will happen eventually. It's just going to take a lot longer than expected due to money issues (basically the story of our city). A good idea remains a good idea, and the Marina District is one of the best ideas Toledo has come up with in ages (even better than the Mud Hens stadium and hockey arena). That's a prime place for a brand new pedestrian-friendly urban neighborhood and everyone knows it (especially outsiders who come and see the property). Not many cities have a large swath of waterfront land like that to develop, especially close to a downtown with beautiful views of a skyline.

And I'll say this, if Toledo could build that Downtown arena after all those years of bickering and empty promises, it can build the Marina District. Big projects do have a tendency to move more slowly around here due to the area's weak economy. But usually the end result is even better than the initial idea. Compare the original renderings of the arena to the final result. It actually ended up a lot nicer than initially expected.

Think of Toledo like a movie that's delayed due to budget issues. Delay isn't always a bad thing. Sometimes it helps work out the kinks and makes the final result more successful. I'd rather have a quality project that opens late than a rushed project that doesn't reach its potential. The bigger the project, the more chances there are for delay. The Marina District is huge, so it's sort of expected, particularly when you consider the scope of the project in a city the size of Toledo, and the region's economy.

January 11th, 2010, 06:40 AM
Well once we see how much the casinos will do for our state im sure more will come. It took detroit a few years to actually get real casinos. I dont see this as a monopoly since the owners of the Toledo Casino arent the same owners of the Cleveland casino...... Cant wait to see some construction trucks and trailors out at Miami Street.

Pilliod Njaim
January 12th, 2010, 12:20 AM
^monopoly in each market since no one else is allowed to build one.

If another vote is passed and others are built, I hope something by Downtown or the Marina District does better. The one positive about the current casino location is that it's pretty much an industrial waste site. This will clean up that waterfront property. But keep in mind, it's basically an island, cut off from South Toledo and Downtown by the river and a long distance (three miles from Downtown), and East Toledo by I-75. Hell, it's even cut off from Rossford too! The potential for spinoff is completely zero.

Mudhen419
January 13th, 2010, 11:27 AM
Another reason why I think the casino isnt a monopoly is because its competition with Detroits...

And yes it is cut off from the eastside/south end but that could be a good thing. I know theres a lot of people who dont want to have to actually drive into toledo for things... This gives it quick easy access to the highway and its far enough away from the hood so itll keep the garbage out.

If you spend $250 million with no expectation of making your money back, that's a bad deal. Just because the vote passed in no way means Penn Gaming has to build something. Only that IF something is built, its them that gets to do it.
I have friends in local government, both Democrat and Republican who are saying the exact same thing. Sorry to burst your bubble, but this is not going to happen. If you believe it is...I've got a bridge to sell you...or a marina district...or a steam plant apartment complex...or a riverwalk...or a new Southwyck! There may be a casino built in Toledo at some point, but I'll bet anyone that no company will ever shell out $50 million for rights and then spend $250 million on the project.
Toledo needs to stick to realistic, effective, proven redevelopment options. 5/3 Field and the new arena are perfect examples of this.

Hey bro you arent the only person to know elected officials around here.... But we arent playin i know someone better than you cuz if we were I know I'd have you just like I do on this topic......

Why would Penn National and Dan Gilbert spend all sorts of money on advertisement to get the thing passed then go out and spend more money by buying the land up just to let it sit. Its not like anyone else was going to buy that land. Hell they even found toxic substances on it.

That company will shell out because they know they will make good money and take away from Detroit casinos.

Columbus Dispatch article on the casinos..... This was in last sundays paper. They seem to talk a lot about Toledo!!!!

Toledo and Columbus are old rivals. Prior to WW2, they were the same size and fought for the title of the state's third largest city. Toledo had far more in amenities and had more of a national reputation (as evidenced by stuff like our art museum and "Holy Toledo!"). The rivalry ended by the 1970's when Cow Town became Ohio's Boom Town. Industrial giants like Cleveland, Toledo, and Cincinnati were plummeting in population and national rankings. Nowadays, one can make the argument that Columbus offers the most opportunity of Ohio's big cities (though Cincinnati has transitioned to a post-industrial economy better than Cleveland and Toledo have). Ohio used to be "Two C's and the T" not "Three C's." A lot of people don't realize how big and well-known Toledo used to be prior to deindustrialization. The newspapers are rivals too.

United Way is one of those rare demolitions I'm not against. I understand it has its fans (it's so ugly, you have to love it), but I'm not sure what other potential use it has. It's a drab dungeon of a building seriously lacking windows. It's not historic, and it's not the type of building you typically see rehabbed. I don't think there was ever a time it was considered an attractive building (well, maybe the 1970's). I'd rather see a new building go up on the site. I know right now the plan is for a park, but I'm not sure it will do much considering this is Toledo's "dead zone" between Cherry and Jackson. I actually would support redoing some of the street grid to get rid of the superblock. A lot of mistakes were made in this area from a planning standpoint (it was hit hard with urban renewal). I think reconnecting St. Clair to Orange will at least give that surface lot behind the Vistula Garage some development potential. With the old building gone, there would no longer be a need for a superblock there. Also, N. Superior should be reconnected through Cherry. Perhaps the city should use this as a springboard for infrastructure upgrades.

Maybe they can reconnect St. Clair, and then do a smaller park with a landmark (fountain, public art, etc.) to the east of that.

Mudhen419
March 10th, 2010, 11:46 AM
Why pay to doze it over? id rather have them leave it up wait for someone new to move in or wait till someone wants to buy the land to build something else. I dont want to see more open lots in Toledo. Im sure they can find some use for the building

So the new mudhens schedule says over 4.5 million fans since 2002..... And the paper the other day said we already sold 47 percent of how many tickets the hens sold last year(upper 500,000's for 2009) so that means we are somewhere above 250,000 tickets sold for the year and we need just under 250,000 tickets sold to get 5 million fans at Fifth Third Field!!!!!

This is just north of Downtown at the Lafarge Terminal. They do cement, so a lot of their traffic consists of barges. It's exciting when you do get to see a ship there. Alpena is one of the classic straight-decker freighters that were built up until about 1970. Alpena is pretty old, first launched in 1942. That's why I love the Great Lakes. No where else in the world do you see ships this old still functioning. The fresh water allows the fleet to have a much higher average age than the ocean-going fleet.

UT needs an urban commercial district, no doubt about it.

I hope it happens sooner rather than later. And I think people need to realize that UT is basically separated from Toledo's economic crisis. College kids will always drop thousands of dollars to get degrees, regardless of economy. The most reliable thing in the world is the naive college kid spending his family fortune and going into debt to get a degree. You can always bank of that. So no matter what happens in the City of Toledo, the University of Toledo will be fine. A more urban campus and commercial district will help ensure those dollars stay at UT and not go to schools with better college town feel like Ohio, Ohio State, Bowling Green, etc.

Right now, UT has a handful of historic landmark buildings, a well-landscaped main green, and a nice football stadium/basketball arena. But that's not enough to please students. They want the "college experience." That means stumbling down the street to bars and parties in a walkable nightlife district. That means having a college town. College towns need density and they need to be pedestrian-friendly. UT is dropping the ball here, and has for quite some time. But in their defense, the school only recently became a majority residential campus. In the past, it was majority commuters. That's why despite its size and breadth, it never developed the way Ohio, Miami, or Ohio State did. Or hell, even BG.

The City of Toledo needs an urban commercial district as well, in order to attract young professionals to work in the city. Greater Toledo still has a strong professional workforce, but I think the most successful cities in the future will be able to offer safe urban environments, affordable suburban environments, and ample peripheral park and forest areas. Toledo can do the first, has the second, but will struggle with the third. Outside of Lake Erie, Toledo has no wild hinterland within reach; its peripheral rural areas are mostly industrial farms. This is an important reason why most 'hot' cities are near mountains (Chicago and perhaps Minneapolis are exceptions) or at least good state forests and parks IMHO. I also think there is something (bad) to be said about the unrelenting grid of the upper Midwest. I really can't stand it. There is nothing to draw my eye, nothing "around the bend" because there are no bends, just 90 degree corners. I miss the organic feel of cities, counties and states like Kentucky and Pennsylvania In the Old Northwest (and beyond), the landscape is just too rational and predictable. There's nothing much to discover, only to approach and pass.

Second, UT has long attracted a different student body from OU and BG. UT was long known as "Bancroft High", a non competitive school in US News parlance: meaning you applied, you got in. BG and OU are just a step above that; but they could count on attracting a large number of kids whose parents could pay, or at least subsidize college life. This meant more $ and more free time for partying. I dont think UT attracts many in that category. UT's location in the suburban-urban middle ground doesn't do it many favors either; the surrounding streets and roads open up just as they reach campus to form high speed barriers that discourage walking or sitting outside. The best thing the city could do is radically slow traffic around campus, as it is around most center city campuses, for a better template on which to build a campus town.
