It looked much better without the signs all over it; before it was quite a classic. Now, it's not a building, but just an advertising board. However, the big signs are partly why Times Square is so famous, but it's a shame they had to sacrifice this building. :moods:

8/10 for the building beneath...

Unique no other place in the World has this. Though the tower that stood there was indeed nice, New York has many of that sort of towers thus it is not a miss for the city. 10 out of 10. Times Square has added that cherry on the cake in making New York a bustling commercialized city.

I don't mind the billboards at all. Without them Times Square wouldn't be what it is and it makes this one of the most unique skyscrapers around!

I want to see that place with my own eyes one day.

I voted 3.

The building is a 10 in my books.

But the billboards?! Where's the building?!

The saving grace is the "Give my regards to pork chops" billboard. I love pork billboards.

too much billboards on this thing...

but still, they got rid of the historic facade of this building and replaced with a mostly glass one. so even if u remove the billboards it's still gonna be bad.

so i guess i really don't mind the billboards on the building in its current state, but they should've never ripped the original facade off the building.

8 then, 4 now, so i guess i vote 6 (the billboards are 10 times more interesting than its current state)

hella good
June 23rd, 2004, 11:48 AM
7 world trade is correct, they stripped the old building of everything but the structure and covered it in glass and concrete to a 60's style horror! without the MAGNIFICENT billboards it would look like crap!

And an answer to an earlier question - no one works there, the building is empty, it earns enough money from its advertizing that it dosent need tenants. it also dosent have tenants because the billboards block out the light not to mention the fact that its shape dosent allow for much office space.

first time I see this tower without billboards....anyway I give it a 2 out of 10 because you can't see a sh*t out of this tower, looks like a bag of billboards stapled up.

Centerpiece of Times Square and one of the focal points of the city, possibly the world. It's been there through it all and dominated ever since when it was built and all the classic Broadway shows were going on under it, when Houdini got away from the chains suspended on the side of the buildng, it was also there with a whole new look while whores sold themselves under its base and it's still there, with yet another whole new look, at the intersection of Broadway and 42nd Street, a must have in postcard stores, the centerpiece of the New Year's celebration, and the center of Times Square - the busiest and most exciting area of the most exciting city of the Western Hemisphere. How could you not give that a 10?
There is more to a building than its looks, guys.

But, I am amazed how beautiful it is underneath.

I recall a visit to Times Square in 1960, and one of the neon billboards was for Admiral TV. The neon signs were the 'big beat' of NY.

Maybe the inside can be turned into discos, nightclubs or bars.
Can attract more people....

And since those outlets do not need windows.

What happened to the Times building was architectural murder. The building was good but not as well desgined as the Flatiron which of course shares the same shape building site. Due to all the New Years Eve TV coverage the billboards have become part of the "culture" so I guess we all have to get used to it.

Original building: 7.5/10

I am surprised how so many people are going on about the billboards being ugly; as has been pointed out, it is TIMES SQUARE! And Times Square is all about signage! LOL! As for the original building, does anyone know how many additions were added onto the original building? Looks like at least one, and possibly two from that illustration. I don't think it is an exceptionally nicely designed old building, but still worth an 8.
