Fes or Fez (Arabic: فاس [Fās]) is the third largest city in Morocco, after Casablanca, and Rabat with a population of 1,368,000 . It is the capital of the Fès-Boulemane Region.

Fes is one of the four so-called "imperial cities" (the others are Marrakech, Meknes and Rabat). It is separated into three parts, Fes el Bali (the old, walled city), Fes-Jdid (new Fes, home of the Mellah), and the Ville Nouvelle (the French-created, newest section of Fes). The Medina of Fes el Bali, the largest of the two medinas of Fes, is believed to be the largest contiguous car-free urban area in the world. Fes el Bali is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The University of Al-Karaouine was founded in 859 A.D. and is the oldest continuous operating university in the world.

At the second picture i tried to remove all the satellite, antennas and other stuff. they really have to renovate the Medina. The picture is taken from a touristic hotspot on the roof of a cafe near Bab Boujloud.

Unfortunately the old medina Fez is suffering from negligence from its owners(gotta say that it's pretty expensive to renovate to its original look). That's what kinda happened in Kesh in the 1980's and early 90's before the tourists who moved and established themselves there had enough money to either live there or to rent the town houses to other tourists.

Fez is bound to have the same effect in the next years hopefully.

On a sans cesse peur de s’y perdre. Ce qui m’est arrivé une nuit : pour quelques pièces, des enfants m’ont ramené au point de départ.

This door is the main gate of the courtyard of the Al-Karaouine Mosque in Fes-el-Bali (Fez Medina), in Morocco. As non-Muslims aren't allowed to enter any mosque in Morocco (except the wonderful Hassan II Mosque of Casablanca), I took this shot from an open door on the opposite side of the courtyard.

Morocco has been famous for its high quality leather since medieval times.

The tanneries of Fes, where the process of turning animal hides into soft colourful slippers has basically remained unchanged since medieval times. To make the hides nice and supple, a pungent mixture of pigeon poop, acids and cow urine is used.

The smell there can be difficult to stand for people that are not use to it. Guys working there have a hard life...

This Hispano-Moorish palace dating from the end of the XIXth century houses some admirable collections of traditional art from Fez. Sculpted wood, wrought iron, sculpted plaster or decorative materials that are in fact works of art in their own right. Embroidery, carpets, jewellery and coins compete with one another to attract the visitor's attention.

But the museum's centrepiece is to be found in the pottery room. The most beautiful of all Moroccan ceramic objects were made by Fez craftsmen. Specialists in this technique since the Xth century, they invented the famous "fez blue" obtained by the use of cobalt. On a background of white enamel or highlighted in colour, the stylised floral motifs interweave in a manner that is as sophisticated as it is harmonius.

Not to be missed: the astrolabes. These astronomical instruments created and prefected by learned Arabs, with all the mystery of a talisman and all the beauty of a jewel.
