The second annual flag hoisting ceremony, held to commemorate Pakistan Day — a public holiday held on March 23 in Pakistan each year — is a chance for Windsor to see the “softer side” of Pakistanis, said Mohsin Naqvi, secretary general for the Pakistan-Canada Association of Canada. “We love to see the Canadian and Pakistani flag together,” he said Sunday afternoon, after speaking to a crowd of more than 100 people. “We have very strong ties.” Pakistan Day recognizes the Lahore Resolution of 1940, when Muslim leaders in India called for a separate and independent country. The result was the creation of Pakistan seven years later. Mayor Eddie Francis said because of the Windsor Pakistani Community’s contributions, the city of Windsor and community “is richer.” Pakistan Day is celebrated worldwide wherever Pakistanis are living, Naqvi said. Windsor-Tecumseh MP Joe Comartin said the people who have settled in Canada from Pakistan continue to be a model for Pakistan. “I hope the unity that Pakistan needs will be continued with the work that you do,” Comartin said. The Windsor celebration is a chance to promote the Pakistani culture and heritage to Canadian born Pakistani children, Naqvi said, as dozens of children ran around waving Pakistani flags and took part in singing their parents homeland national anthem. Naqvi said the event also gives the community of Pakistanis, who started to relocate to Windsor in the 1960s and now make up 700 to 1,000 households, a chance to dispel stereotypes. “Pakistan’s name is always attached with terrorism because we are fighting a war against terrorism in that area,” Naqvi said. “But what people have to realize is that Pakistan is an ally of the west in the fight. We as a nation are not terrorists. We are actually the victims of those terrorists.” Naqvi invited Windsorites to come to the third annual flag hoisting next year to enjoy “good Pakistani food and see how we can live together in the same community.” The flag will remain for one week. http://postmediawindsorstar.files.wordpress.com/2013/03/1pakistan_-_09.jpg?w=950&h=620 (http://postmediawindsorstar.files.wordpress.com/2013/03/1pakistan_-_09.jpg)Mohsin Raza Naqvi, secretary general of the Pakistan Canadian Association, speaks at a Pakistan Day celebration at Windsor city hall, Sunday, March 24, 2013.
