Phil November 21st, 2003, 11:26 PM Is the tower in the 3rd picture built or is it just a render ? it looks interesting.
Bobdreamz November 22nd, 2003, 12:18 AM the tower in the third pic is a rendering of the RSA BattleHouse tower which just recently started construction.
Duke Togo November 22nd, 2003, 06:41 AM The tower in the 3rd pic also caught my eye, and when it's completed it will no doubt make a big impact on the skyline...
...but at the moment, the skyline is truly a sad sight to see. :(
4.5/10
I also just wanted to add that, from an artistic point of view, this skyline gets a few points for being so "sad". :)

4 for the skyline (or lack there of) and .5 because they have a interstate tunnel under the bay. Not many cities with skylines have tunnels like that.

theutiman November 20th, 2004, 05:20 AM Mobile looks like a total industrial wasteland, kinda like Allentown but a little less dead. Now, don't get me wrong, I like industrial wastelands, in that regard i give it an 8. But as a skyline, 3. As a place I'd like to visit, 1.
Ever notice, that when you look at a USA map, every city in Alabama brings back memories from high school History class when you were learning about the civil rights movement? Some Southern heritage, huh...
LouisvilleJake January 5th, 2005, 01:14 AM I was taught that if I had nothing good to say, then not to say anything at all. 3.5/10 at best.
hauntedheadnc January 6th, 2005, 01:02 AM Historic, dense, and attractive enough. The RSA Tower is a real winner, however. Mobile is a lot like New Orleans, Savannah, and Charleston in that its real strengths lie in its history rather than a forest of tall buildings. Heck, when you consider that the water table in Mobile, as in New Orleans, is about three feet below ground, it's a wonder they've got any tall buildings at all!
All in all, I like evocative, historic Southern cities and as such, I give Mobile a 7, especially when the RSA Tower is under construction. It'll add a lot to the skyline.
james2390 April 6th, 2005, 07:56 AM With RSA Battlehouse rising, it should help out quite a bit.
7.5/10
SoboleuS April 6th, 2005, 10:09 AM It has some tall buildings, but not many of them ;) And those talls are rather ugly... 6/10
MattSal April 7th, 2005, 04:12 AM Just a few talls, but nothing special. I give it a 6/10.
Fear of Heights May 13th, 2005, 01:04 AM "industrial wasteland

I've never considered Mobile as a true "skyline" city. I never realized they had the buildings they did until a few years ago. From that standpoint, I'm actually suprised that their skyline is as large as it is. Mobile is a true port city. It has never had a need for skyscrapers. It has a buttload of port infrastructure. I'm willing to bet that Mobile's economy blows Allentown's away. All I know about Allentown is that Billy Joel wrote a decent song about it and that it's a crusty old steel town. If I wanted to see old steel factories I'd get in my car and drive an hour and a half to Birmingham, a city with a rich steel making past that has totally transformed from the steel industry to a thriving service based economy and another local economy that most likely stacks up very well to Allentown. The Mobile metro area welcomed well over 7 million tourists in the past year. How did Allentown make out? If Mobile is a 1 on your scale, then Allentown would have to be about -8 on that same scale. I don't see the NFL playing the Senior Bowl in Allentown or the NCAA holding a Bowl game there or the National Junior Miss pageant being held there year after year.
BTW, how can you look at a map of any state and immediately think of civil rights? Most normal people immediately think of the geography unique to a particular area or in Allentown's case, a collection of rundown steel mills. As for the civil rights movement, it was also WON in Alabama. Something self righteous hy####### like yourself always conveniently fail to mention. :bash:
P.S. I gave Mobile a 7. It gets extra points for the setting right on Mobile Bay with the Cruise ship in sight. I also scored it based on the new tower which is just above halfway finished. It could be far better than it is but it is still pretty good considering the relative lack of need for tall buildings based on the local economy.
Accura4Matalan May 13th, 2005, 10:45 PM 8/10. Not bad. Stupid name for a city though!
Fear of Heights May 13th, 2005, 11:12 PM The city actually gets its name from the Mobila tribe. Like so many other U.S. cities, its name is derived from the Native American tribe that originally settled in the area. The name doesn't have anything to do with the adjective or noun "mobile".

MuddyZehbra32 May 15th, 2005, 06:41 AM Ya know, speaking of Allentown that reminds me that I keep saying im going to go to allentown to take pitures and put the skyline here (there are no decent pictures on the net) their is ppnl which is a beautiful building and some low buildings the make it have a kinda-sortas skyline up close. the economy is actually making a kind of ocmebck. crap, I should have done that yesterday when i was at dorney park (the lehigh valley's big amuesent park)...
anyway, this is a good skyline i think it will get better over time. the one building is really nice. Reminds me alot of Providence. (6)

Good pics, but I think it's time for some updated pics shot as you approach the Wallace Tunnel going both east and west on I-10. I'd post some if I knew how too. I passed through Mobile this past weekend and the skyline looks awesome as you approach the I-10 tunnel from either direction. The eastbound approach is especially cool as you get a very cool angle of what has become a great skyline for a relatively small city.
