Omaha is the largest city in the State of Nebraska, United States. It is the county seat of Douglas County. As of the 2000 census, the city had a population of 390,007. According to the 2006 census estimate, Omaha's population rose to 427,872, which includes an extra population count of approximately 8,300 people by annexing the smaller city of Elkhorn. Located on the eastern edge of Nebraska, it is on the Missouri River, about 20 miles (30 km) north of the mouth of the Platte River. Omaha is the anchor of the Omaha-Council Bluffs metropolitan area. Council Bluffs, Iowa lies directly across the Missouri River from Omaha. The city and its suburbs formed the 60th-largest metropolitan area in the United States in 2000, with an estimated population of 822,549 (2006) residing in eight counties or about 1.2 million within a 50 mile (80 km) radius.
The city grew up on the Missouri Riverfront, with the first settlement extending from the Lone Tree Ferry crossing from Kanesville, Iowa in the early 1850s. The beginning of the city included the vigilante Omaha Claim Club, as well as the leadership of early leaders of the Nebraska Territory, of which Omaha was the capital until 1867. At the turn of the century Omaha was known as a "wide-open" city, meaning that anything went, particularly under the administration of Mayor "Cowboy Jim" Dahlman and political boss Tom Dennison from the late 1900s through the 1920s. After the lynching of Willy Brown in 1919, the city experienced a great deal of racial tension, leading to the birth of a strong civil rights movement. Omaha earned its nickname, the "Gateway City of the West", because of its central location as a transportation hub for the United States in the late 1800s.
Today Omaha has a rich cultural background, including the Joslyn Art Museum, the Durham Western Heritage Museum, the Holland Performing Arts Center, and the Omaha Community Playhouse. The city boasts headquarters for such companies as Berkshire Hathaway and Conagra, and is listed as a top 10 high tech haven by Newsweek in 2001. Music in Omaha has always been important to the city, with North Omaha's music scene being historically important and in modern times, the "Omaha Sound" defining an important trend across the nation.
The city's historical and cultural attractions have been lauded by numerous national newspapers, including the Boston Globe and the New York Times.

Has a tall or two, but core doesn't look so well defined and I suspect a lot of open air carparks around the place. Good to see something happening there too.

eomaha.com January 16th, 2004, 06:16 PM Hey! Nice pictures! ;)
Oh what the heck... I'm biased of course... and I'll give it a 10 for how far it's come in a couple of short years! I mean, aside from Des Moines (which may be the best skyline 'per capita' in the US)... perhaps Tulsa... how many other better skylines are there for metros under 1 million? :)
Hawkeye January 16th, 2004, 07:53 PM Thought you might recognize those. Felt the opening pic in this thread didn't really do justice to Omaha. Now, it's no Chicago, never claimed to be. But it's better than the 6.5 average it has gotten so far, all factors taken into relative context.

DTO Luv April 19th, 2005, 07:56 AM For those of you unfamiliar with Omaha it is a fairly old city that's still progressive. The southern part of Downtown is home to the cities oldest buildings and has a Chicago-meets-Euro look to it on the streets. The northern part is where the modern buildings are/being built. You can see the city progress in the skyline. How do you think it looks?

DTO Luv April 19th, 2005, 06:16 PM Oops. Sorry Fox.
Omaha is the largest city in Nebraska. It is the county seat of Douglas County. As of the 2000 census, the city had
a total population of 390,007. Located on the eastern edge of Nebraska, it is on the Missouri River about 20 miles north of
where the Platte River empties into the Missouri. Council Bluffs, Iowa lies directly across the Missouri River from Omaha.
Together, the two cities form the core of the 60th-largest metropolitan area in the United States, with a population
of 803,801 (2004 estimate) in residing in eight counties.
The city actually has over 412,000 people. The MSA is at 803,000 and the CSA is at 850,000. With the adjacent Lincoln MSA there are over 1,100,000 people in Omaha.
hauntedheadnc April 19th, 2005, 06:35 PM An excellent skyline for a city of its size, which seems to boast some admirable density. Overall, it looks very, very pleasant. 9.

MattSal April 19th, 2005, 11:24 PM Despite being small, this skyline has the uncanny ability to look good from just about any angle. I give it a 7/10. :)
DTO Luv April 20th, 2005, 07:37 AM It actually goes for a long ways when combined with Midtown and UNMC.
Justadude April 21st, 2005, 04:57 AM The central scraper is really nice, and there's a nice collection of shorter buildings there. It really needs a handful of other tallish towers to stand out, but on the whole it's not bad at all for a city its size. 6/10
Jaybird April 26th, 2005, 05:06 AM Good heightage, although I give 6.5/10.

KevD June 26th, 2007, 04:02 AM I've never even heard of Omaha. Not a bad skyline at all. This city is lucky to have the One first national center building and the woodmen building because without them, this city would look no bigger than spokane. It has real potential to have a great skyline if we see some more of those 100-200+ meter skyscrapers being built. I saw on emporis that there's a 114 m 32 storey building approved. So that's good. This city has awesome low-rise buildings though. So much early 1900's stuff. It's awesome. Now we just need to see some of those modern monster towers built and this city will be amazing.
DTO Luv June 26th, 2007, 06:15 AM Here's a few more from my possible new office Downtown. I can see my building and my windows in both pictures. This also shows where we make up in density what we are a bit lacking (I don't think so) in height. If things go right the company I'd be working for and taking pics from, they will be building a new First National sized building Downtown.
