In 2009, the champion princes and princesses of sports showed their true pedigree in the Queen City of the South, Cebu City. In 2010, the little champions mined the gold medals in the Land of the Golden Smiles, Cagayan de Oro. In 2011, the Third National MILO® Little Olympics will be held in the place where ‘catching’ means everything – the home of the Bangus capital of the world, Pangasinan. All 5,368 square kilometers of sprawling land and sand will be home to the latest and hottest sports catch of the MILO® Little Olympics.

Before the games begin, here is a closer look at the host of the Third National MILO® Little Olympics, Pangasinan.

Pangasinan is one of the country’s largest provinces. Its population is nearing 4 million and it occupies a large area in the northern part of the country. Pangasinan is on the Western Seaboard of the Philippines facing the South China Sea. With its position, the fish industry has become the primary source of livelihood. More importantly the specie of fish called chanos chanos or the Bangus. Pangasinan is home to Dagupan, the Bangus capital of not only the Philippines but also the world. Its name is also indicative of another major industry. Pangasinan actually means “place of salt-making”. Salt is another of the province’s major contribution to the country. The land of the salt is also home to princess Urduja and her legendary exploits. Fiction or not, her noteworthy bravery is something that the Pangasinense holds close to their hearts.

The province is gifted with the right resources to progress. But these gifts must be harnessed well. The Pangasinense championed their cause to make good with what they are given. And just like the champions of the MILO® Little Olympics, they exhibited qualities like determination, perseverance and discipline. These attributes make Pangasinan one of the more progressive provinces in the Philippines and the worthy host of the league where the hottest catch in sports play, the Third National MILO® Little Olympics.

so i went to csi lucao last saturday to watch a 3D movie...unfortunately, walang naka-schedule na 3d movie that week. sa nov. 30 pa raw yung Happy Feet 2..but i was still curious kung ano itsura ng newly renovated csi cinemas..so i still bought a ticket kahit hindi ko gusto yung palabas na twilight: breaking dawn sa cinema 2, it's not really my genre :puke:

anyways, to begin with maganda yung glass doors of each cinema...meron na ring ilaw along the aisle ala-SM cinema, hindi na madilim..malamig na rin ang aircon, ayos na rin ang sounds and new comfortable chairs..i was expecting na itataas nila elevation ng floor with steps, pero baka sa cinema 1 nila ginawa yun...ang hindi ko lang nagustuhan ay iisa lang ang CR which is located sa may cinema 4(w/c isn't really a functioning cinema), meaning lalabas ka pa ng sinehan para umihi. tapos wala pang mirror sa CR, pero baka hindi pa naikakabit. tapos iisa na rin ang bilihan ng snax unlike before na tig-isa...and also, 150 bayad sa cinema 1 kahit 2D lang, i'm guessing baka may sarili silang CR dun, hehe. malalaman ko yan on Nov 30. :) i actually took some pics using my celfone cam, pero masyado madilim wala ring makikita...too bad

:)yes ..at least nag improved na yun CSI cinema di gaya dati na sira mga upuan at wala kwenta sound system nila..a lot improvement pa to come..say 3D cinema da say bayar to ya is 200pesos:ohno:

Pangasinan hosts National MILO Little Olympics Nov. 18-20
Posted on November 19, 2011 - Filed Under News, Sports | Leave a Comment

LINGAYEN–The 3rd National MILO Little Olympics 2011, one of the biggest sporting events in the country, was being held for the first time in Pangasinan last November 18 -20.

The event was participated in by some 1,500 school-based athletes nationwide who competed in various sports events at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center (NRSCC).

Tess Bernardino, MILO Luzon regional coordinator, said this year’s competition highlighted sports events where Filipinos can excel in regional and global matches.

“MILO is focusing on activities in which Filipinos can excel, thus a mix of Olympic sports and several other events – athletics, badminton, chess, football, gymnastics, scrabble, sepak takraw, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis and volleyball,” Bernardino said.

"Events like these give them a different experience competing at the top level while getting a chance to meet children from different backgrounds, because we build champions not only in sports but also in the bigger arena called life," said Nestlé Assistant Vice President and MILO Sports Executive Pat Goc-Ong.

Bernardino, meanwhile, hailed Pangasinan as a venue, citing that it is the only one in Region 1 that has complete sports facilities.

Modesto Operania, provincial sports coordinator, said the Milo-sponsored event served as a “tune-up” for the coming Palarong Pambansa 2012 that the province is bidding to host. Urdaneta landfill can serve more LGUs
Posted on November 19, 2011 -

URDANETA CITY—The newly-opened Engineered Sanitary Landfill in Sitio Calegu, Catablan here is already taking in wastes from six local government units, including the city’s, but it can still accommodate more, said Mayor Amadeo Gregorio Perez IV.

So far, the users are the towns of Sta. Barbara, Pozorrubio, Mapandan, Calasiao and Bautista in Pangasinan and the Baguio Export Processing Zone Authority (BEPZA).

Observers expected Dagupan City to be among the first users, but it has yet to express interest.

"Dagupan is welcome but we have not seen any proposal yet from the city government," said Perez.http://sundaypunch.prepys.com/archives/2011/11/19/urdaneta-landfill-can-serve-more-lgus/

LINGAYEN - - - The Automobile Association of the Philippines (AAP) in cooperation with the provincial government of Pangasinan will be staging a three-day Pangasinan Drive Tour Caravan and the signing of the Decade Action for Road Safety Pledge.

... The event will kick-off on November 25, 11:00 in the morning at the Sison Auditorium here.

AAP Director and former Tourism Secretary Mina Gabor, said the drive tour caravan is AAP’s program to drum up domestic tourism by encouraging their members and other motorists to visit various attractions through road trips.

Further, the AAP, according to Nabor, is the leading advocacy group on motoring related issues and concerns like road safety, green motoring and driver education.

Provincial Administrator Rafael Baraan and Tourism Operations Division Chief Malu Elduayan, said the signing of the Decade Action for Road Safety pledge aims to become part of the global effort to reduce road crashes worldwide by five million and save 50 million more from injuries between 2011 to 2020.

With this development, the AAP has invited Governor Amado T. TODAY IN HISTORY: November 24, 1892 - The first railroad line in the Philippines, covering a distance of 195 km. from Manila to Dagupan, was opened on this day (during the waning years of the Spanish colonial period); The Ferrocarril Manila-Dagupan (Manila-Dagupan Railroad), is said to have been built by the British, and is one of the three railroad lines proposed by the colonial Spaniards, with the second and third lines to be realized under the American rule.

wow...1892 pa?? nagpapatunay yan na ang Dagupan noon pa man ay premier city of the north, sayang nga lang, wala ng Manila-Dagupan na tren ang bumabyahe ngayon :ohno: pati ung mga bakal ng riles wala na rin

Pangasinan's Palaro

Now the real work begins.

The province of Pangasinan is once again hosting the Palarong Pambansa, beating out sports heavyweights Laguna and Marikina in the final round of bidding. But the vision of Gov. Amado Espino Jr. is to dovetail the annual multi-sport student competition with the Pista’y Dayat (Festival of the Sea) and make a grand showcase of the province’s hospitality and abundance. This will also bring to the mainstream public’s attention the groundbreaking change the general has made since assuming office. There is much more to Pangasinan than the Hundred Islands and Our Lady of Manaoag.

“In 1995, the governor was in charge of finishing the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center for the Palaro,” recalls provincial administrator Rafael Baraan. “Because the budget had been held up by the provincial government at the time, he only had 49 days to complete the facilities. Nobody slept. He finished the job, and some people still consider that the best Palaro.”

That hurried masterpiece has undergone many facelifts, and gained fame as the venue for the opening of the Metropolitan Basketball Association in 1998, an event attended by then-President Fidel Ramos. The surroundings have also undergone surprising transformations. The provincial capitol, which lay dormant for almost two decades, is now a showcase of the province’s political and historical heritage, restored to its full glory prior to World War II. In fact, visitors are welcome to go to the governor’s office (once used as a storage room) any time, 24 hours a day, and take pictures or just enjoy the ambience. The rooftop viewing deck is also open 24 hours a day.

In front of the capitol, the formerly decrepit playground is now a beautiful public park, with a permanent outdoor exhibit of World Warr II memorabilia. Unknown to many, Lingayen Gulf was Gen. Douglas MacArthur’s first stop before Leyte, where he fulfilled his promise “I shall return.” Even vintage warcraft such as tanks and an old Japanese zero and anti-aircraft guns have found new life as a reminder of the fight for freedom, which Pangasinan’s guerrillas played a large part in.

Espino is no stranger to development or history. In 1972, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the Philippine Military Academy, which he followed up with a Masters Degree in Development Management from Pangasinan State University in 1995. In between, he climbed up the ranks of the Philippine National Police, with a broad range of experience in intelligence and operations, criminal investigation, and as regional commander all over Luzon. With his organizational skills and passion for development, he then entered politics as a two-time representative of the second district of Pangasinan, the province courted by most national candidates, having the largest numbers of voters concentrated in one area.

Sports development is one of Espino’s priorities, along with tourism and investments promotions; environmental protection, and hosting of national and international events. The Narciso Ramos Center’s facility’s basketball gym is currently undergoing renovation, and the provincial government has added a 1,500-seat training center next door, in the capitol complex. A golf course is also being built a few kilometers away, and several resort developments have been started all over the province. Gradually, word of mouth is starting to bring attention to the beaches of the large province known for its bangus and seafood production. Dagupan City has become an educational hub for Luzon, as the best schools have built campuses there.

Under Espino’s watch, Pangasinan is finally living up to its potential as a resort destination. The Capitol Beach Resort in Lingayen has been spruced up, and Espino, a golfer, added a driving range facing the sea. The range will serve as the archery venue for the Palaro. Espino has also spearheaded a plan to extend the runway of the little-used Lingayen airport, to encourage tourism. Aquatic sports will also get a boost, with the province’s large-scale dredging and tree-planting projects along beaches and waterways, most notably along the breathtaking Limahong Channel, which zigzags lazily across that part of the province. The giant Padyak Pinoy or Le Tour de Filipinas had one of its biggest stages in Pangasinan, and received rave reviews.

The Palarong Pambansa itself will most likely be moved back a couple of weeks to end in the first week of May, in time for Pangasinan’s signature festival, the Pista’y Dayat. In this year’s edition, entertainment programs of both ABS-CBN and GMA held their live telecasts during the weeklong celebration from April 23 to May 3. With a little more support, the festival will become a red-letter vacation along the likes of Sinulog, Kadayawan, Masskara, Kasadya and others. The provincial government’s sports and tourism promotion offices also held boxing, beach volleyball, cycling, and traditional games competitions as well, not to mention street dancing, singing and youth events on the environment.

“Sports is very important to the governor’s programs,” says provincial Public Information officer Butch Velasco. “The governor see the value of sports in development, helping keep peace and order, and maximizing the talents of the citizenry. He is, in fact, looking for athletes to represent the province on the national and international level, and the province already has the training facilities.”

With the political will, resources and passion for sports shown by its leaders, Pangasinan is on a mission to raise the bar for organizing the Palarong Pambansa, and engender openness and support from the general public. We wish them the best.

Automobile group promotes road safety in Pangasinan

Friday, November 25, 2011

LINGAYEN, Pangasinan -- “Reduce road accidents” is the battlecry of the Automobile Association of the Philippines (AAP), as it goes around the country with its Drive Tour Caravan.

On Friday morning, former Tourism now AAP Director Secretary Mina Gabor, the ambassadors of Malaysia, Brunei, Greece and Pakistan, together with Provincial Administrator Rafael Baraan, led the signing of the Decade Action for Road Safety Pledge held at the Sison Auditorium here.

Does Gloria Arroyo deserve to be placed under house arrest? Cast your vote.

AAP Director Jacinto Mantaring, also a signatory, said road accidents were the 20th highest cause of death in the country. Unless drastic measures are undertaken, it may become the number three killer by year 2020.

Road accidents that result in death are caused by using cellphones while driving and intoxication, both Mantaring and Gabor said.

They also advised drivers and passengers to always wear seatbelts and, as part of their environmental campaign, to avoid throwing trash outside the vehicle window.

Meanwhile, Gabor said part of AAP’s program is to also drum up domestic tourism. They encourage their members and other motorists to visit the various attractions through road trips.

For its part, the Provincial Government of Pangasinan, Tourism Operations Division Chief Malu Elduayan stated that the signing of the Decade Action for Road Safety Pledge aims to become part of the global effort to reduce road crashes worldwide.

They also lauded the AAP’s effort to promote domestic tourism which is one of the advocacies of Governor Amado Espino Jr. who himself has been encouraging his provincemates to visit the different tourist destinations in Pangasinan.

Espino earlier launched the “I Love Pangasinan” campaign in which he stated that before Pangasinenses encourage others to come and visit the province, they first should show their love for Pangasinan by knowing the province better and by taking care of its environment.

From Pangasinan, the AAP will travel to La Union and to the Ilocos provinces. (Liway C. Manantan-Yparraguirre/Sunnex)

Sweet success

THE national fruit is the world’s sweetest.

The Carabao Mango – rated in 1995 by the Guinness Book of World as the sweetest fruit in the world – is known in other countries as the Manila Super Mango.

India is the world’s largest mango producer, followed by China, Australia, Mexico and the United States. The Philippines occupies sixth slot, with 4 percent of world harvests, and is the largest supplier of fresh mangoes to Japan with a market share of 65 percent.

Thailand produces more mangoes but the Philippines exports more. Still, the Philippines gets just 7 percent of the global mango pie.

In Gross Value Added, mango contributes an average of P12.5 billion per year, according to the Bureau of Agricultural Research.

Mango harvests grew by 10 percent last year, the Department of Agriculture (DA) estimates. The 2010 El Niño warm weather contributed to the growth because flowers bloomed in the absence of rain.

Philippine mango exports first grew big time in the early 1990s. By 2010, the country exported $15.99 million worth of fresh and processed mangoes, albeit lower by 18.36 percent compared to the export value in 2008.

Still, the DA’s Agribusiness and Marketing Assistance Service estimates the average domestic price for mangoes is $0.95 per kilogram, implying an initial premium of almost $5 per kg.

Today, the Philippines exports mangoes to 48 countries. The major markets are Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea and the United States. China, through Hong Kong, is the largest destination (51 percent), followed by Japan (31 percent). Switzerland, Taiwan, United Kingdom, the Middle East and Europe are major markets.

Based on export volume and value, mango is the major fruit crop, followed by banana and pineapple.

While the Philippines exports less than 10 percent of the mango that it produces, the trade is still worth about $61 million. Domestic consumption is worth P41.6 billion.

Mango is eaten fresh or as dessert (ripe) or salad and relish (immature) and can be processed dried, pureed, juiced, nectared, chutneyed, pickled, rolled, powdered, halved or scooped in light syrup or used as flavoring for ice cream, bakery products and confectionaries.

Fresh mango is the leading dollar earner with over half (59 percent) of total mango exports, followed by dried mangoes (16 percent), mango purees (18 percent), juice concentrates (6 percent) and other mango juices (1 percent).

Fresh mango exports to Hong Kong, Japan, Australia, United Kingdom, Canada and other countries reached 46,992 metric tons (mt) worth $31.11 million in 2004. Dried and other processed mango products was 18,039 mt, valued at $20.8 million, according to the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics.

Luzon – mainly Pangasinan – accounts for 65 percent of mango production while Mindanao is next with about a fourth. Mango thrives most where four to five dry months occur: Luzon, Western and Central Visayas, Davao and Cotabato.

Of the 880, 759 hectares of land planted to fruit crops, about 158, 000 has. is planted to mangoes, with seven million trees in 2004 producing 967, 000 mt of fruits worth P16.135 million. The mango industry supports some 2.5 million farmer families, most of them backyard growers with five to 20 fruit bearing trees. The few corporate orchard growers with integrated production and processing operations mostly export their produce. Paul M. Icamina

Carabao Center hails pigar-pigar delicacy
Posted on November 27, 2011 - Filed Under Business, News | Leave a Comment

DAGUPAN’s pigar-pigar, a dish using carabao meat, has been given the thumbs up by the Philippine Carabao Center (PCC) for promoting the local but not widely used meat.
Officers of the PCC, based in Munoz, Nueva Ecija, visited the city last week to document the preparation of the dish and its popularity among consumers at stalls along Galvan Street.
The pigar-pigar has become a part of popular annual Bangus Festival with special events involving stall owners such as competitions for the “tastiest”, the “fastest pigar-pigar cook” and the “cleanest pigar-pigar stall”.
PCC officials and representatives themselves tried out the dish and expressed their support.
“We would like to acknowledge the promotion of your city in using carabao meat for your native delicacies. Kami po ay natutuwa,” said Khrizie Evert Marcelo, assistant information officer of PCC, in a radio interview.
“Pigar pigar” is the Pangasinan term for continuous turning in frying, in this case, the carabao meat, which is cut in bite-size pieces, topped with onions, and with an option to add some
The PCC group also visited the City Veterinary Office for additional information on carabao meat use. (V. Sarmiento, PIA-Pangasinan)

Lingayen fishers oppose magnetite mining
from:inquirer.net

MANILA, Philippines-Magnetite mining is threatening Lingayen Gulf and the livelihood of small fishers there.

This was the findings of the participants of the Ilocos People’s Mining Summit last weekend which decried the mining activities in the region.

The Ilocos People’s Mining Summit was attended by more than 200 delegates, mostly leaders of farmers and fisherfolk organizations in La Union, Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte and student leaders from Don Mariano Marcos State University, St. Paul College of Ilocos and University of Northern Philippines.

According to the participants, Lingayen Gulf, which covers the coasts of Zambales, Pangasinan, La Union, Ilocos Sur, and Ilocos Norte, is being overwhelmed by black sand mining for the mineral magnetite.

Pamalakaya, a progressive fishers group and a summit participant, said the region surrounding Lingayen Gulf is littered with mining applications for magnetite, which are found in so-called black sand, which is abundant in beaches.

Gerry Albert Corpuz, Pamalakaya spokesman, said there are 15 black sand mining in La Union, 57 in Ilocos Sur and 86 in Ilocos Norte for a grand total of 158 applications for offshore and onshore magnetite mining.

“This government is inviting a near future red carpet massacre of people’s livelihood, the grand slam plunder and catastrophic death of Lingayen Gulf in the hands of magnetite mining syndicate in Ilocos Region,” he said.

Pamalakaya said magnetite and black sand mining could ruin the coast of Lingayen Gulf. Mine tailings and chemicals used in the extraction process could seep into and contaminate the waters, which provide livelihood to the coastal communities there.

“These magnetite giants are literally and figuratively moving heaven and earth in search for huge profits at the expense of human lives, the livelihood and the environment. They are removing Lingayen Gulf from the surface of this earth courtesy of large-scale black sand mining,” Pamalakaya said.

NGCP holds training for Dagupan electric linemen
CALASIAO, Pangasinan, Nov. 29 (PIA) -- The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) continues to offer its comprehensive lineman’s training modules to private distribution utilities (DUs) and electric cooperatives nationwide to share their aspiration of bringing reliable service to power customers.

The latest training participants from the Dagupan Electric Corporation (DECORP) availed of NGCP’s free course on November 28-29, 2011. As in past courses, lecturers and resource persons are from NGCP’s regional and district operation and maintenance groups. Hands-on trainings and demonstration on line maintenance activities are also part of the two-day event.

Although the lineman’s training program is designed for electric cooperatives which acquired 69-kiloVolt lines or sub-transmission lines, it may be made available even to those distribution utilities not acquiring sub-transmission facilities.

Gov says Pangasinan to embrace digitization as a way of life

In his spech read by Provincial
Administrator Rafael Baraan,
Espino said the provincial
government is already in the
process of digitizing the real
property tax administration with a common RPTA computer system
now being installed in all
municipalities.

Espino said the provincial
government has set its sights
towards digital technology which
is the reason it has included in
its project line-up online medical
consultation to better improve hospital management, financial
management requiring legislative
tracking, online legal services,
online emergency response, and
online disaster management.

The provincial government will
also invest in technology
packages that are cost-effective
and high impact that will be
beneficial for Pangasinenses such
as the provision of wi-fi (wireless fidelity) for all municipalities.

“Siguro kapag wi-fi na ang
bayan-bayan at munisipyo sa
Pangasinan, maraming matutuwa
kina Mayor at kapitan dahil
marami na ang makakapag-
internet na mga kababayan,” said Espino in his speech further
read by Baraan.

UP, UP AND AWAY—The crowd at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center (NRSCC) in Lingayen erupted in loud cheers as the St. Louis University cheering squad executed breathtaking stunts during the closing and awarding ceremonies of the 3rd National MILO Little Olympics on November 20. Governor Amado Espino Jr. thanked the MILO officials led by its chairman-assistant vice president and sports executive, Pat Goc-Ong, for choosing the NRSCC as the venue for their national finals participated in by some 1,500 school-based athletes nationwide. LINGAYEN—The Automobile Association of the Philippines (AAP), in cooperation with the provincial government, launched on November 25 the three-day Pangasinan Drive Tour Caravan to promote domestic tourism and road safety practices.

A highlight of the event was the signing of the pledge for the Decade Action for Road Safety.

AAP Director and former Tourism Secretary Mina Gabor said the caravan encourages members and other motorists to visit various attractions around the country through road trips.

The program is also part of AAP’s advocacy for road safety, green motoring, and driver education.

Provincial Administrator Rafael Baraan and Tourism Operations Division Chief Malu Elduayan said the signing of the pledge is Pangasinan’s participation in the global effort to reduce road accidents worldwide by five million and save 50 million more from injuries between2011 to 2020.

Among the signatories of the pledge were representatives of the Provincial Board, League of the Municipalities of Pangasinan (LMP), Pangasinan Councilor’s League (PCL), Pangasinan Federation of Barangay Captains, the Pangasinan Provincial Police Office, Land Transportation Office and the local transport Group. LINGAYEN’S Federico ‘Dick’ Gicain brought honor to his hometown, the venue of the 2nd Pangasinan Chess Championship, by emerging as the tournament’s champion.

Gicain, who bagged a P5,000 cash prize, won all his games in the seven-round Swiss format tournament and took the sole lead.

Tied for second to eighth place, with 5.5 points each, were International Chess Federation Master Haridas Pascua, Arnold Jabilles, Fidel Labuanan, Leonardo Abalos Jr., Chris Dispo, Romy Fagon and Emmanuel Lomibao.

Pascua, the top seed and the only titled player in the tournament, suffered a third round loss in a drawn position against Isagani Fernandez.

Last year’s titleholder, Zaldy Falcon of San Carlos City, earned only 5 points and landed among those tied for ninth to 14th place.

In other categories, Romulo Curioso of Cabanatuan City won the Kiddie Category, followed by Danever James Ubando of Dagupan City.

Special awards went to Isagani Fernandez for the Top Senior Prize, Ernali Bayot for the Top Lady Prize, and six-year old Brian Yanes for being the youngest participant.

The Top Local Junior Player Prizes, exclusively for residents of the capital town Lingayen, went to Joey Roi Torres, John Luis Bravo and Justin Torio.

Held at the Provincial Training Center on November 19 and 20, the competition was the third event in the 2nd Annual Pangasinan Chess Festival following the chess clinic and the age group championship.

Juan Vicente R. Sison, Philippine Chess Federation president, said the tournament was held to prepare the local players for the upcoming open tournament in December where titled players from the entire country are expected to participate. (with report from PIA-Pangasinan)

The event will feature a basketball game between the LNU Dukes varsity team and a team of actors and PBA players including Danny Ildefonso, Marlo Aquino, and Lordy Tugade.

Faculty members will also compete against the university’s employees.

The actors, including Bayani Agbayani, will also perform entertainment numbers, and candidates for Miss Dagupan 2011 will be feted between games.

Other expected showbusiness personalities are Emilio Garcia, Christopher Roxas, Eric Fructuoso.

Tickets (P200 and P500) are available at the University Student Government office and at the Jollibee Lucao branch.

Jellica Manuel, editor-in-chief of ULNOS, the official student publication of LNU, said the proceeds will be used for the landscaping of the new LNU façade and renovation of the basketball varsity barracks, while the rest will be spent for future projects of the student government. LINGAYEN—Luzon’s athletes still proved no match against their competitors from the Visayas, the National Capital Region (NCR) and Mindanao, but Gov. Amado Espino Jr. was jubilant nonetheless for the opportunity to host the 3rd National MILO Little Olympics held from November 18 to 20 at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center (NRSCC) here.

Team Visayas once again proved their athletic superiority by emerging champion for the third time in a row while NCR and Mindanao placed second and third, respectively.

Espino, who thanked officials of the sponsor Milo for choosing Pangasinan as the games venue, said the event serves a prelude to the province’s hosting of the Palarong Pambansa next year.

Espino said Pangasinan is looking forward to hosting more Milo Olympics in the future.

Vice Governor Jose Ferdinand Calimlim, Jr., who represented the governor during the awarding and closing ceremonies, congratulated the champions and hailed all the participating athletes.

Competitions such as the MILO Little Olympics, Espino said, serves as a perfect venue for young athletes to display their prowess in sports and likewise enable them to instill in their consciousness the value of unity, camaraderie, and sportsmanship which help them become “champions” in their own rights.

For the elementary level, Visayas notched the 1st place followed by NCR and Mindanao.

The secondary level, on the other hand, was dominated by NCR with Visayas and Mindanao trailing in 2nd and 3rd positions.

The MILO national competition brought in around 1,500 athletes with over 930 competing schools.

Taking a stopover at Urdaneta City (http://sundaypunch.prepys.com/archives/2010/04/04/taking-a-stopover-at-urdaneta-city/)

BUSTLING and booming best describe Urdaneta City today.
The newly-widened section of the Manila North Road (formerly called MacArthur Highway) that passes through the city serves as a major crossroads that leads towards the eastern and western parts of Pangasinan and onwards north to other parts of Luzon.
This puts Urdaneta in a very strategic location and the city has taken advantage of this to position itself as the “Gateway to the North” and the “Commercial Center of Eastern Pangasinan”.
Urdaneta has also come to be know as the “bagsakan” (main trading post) of Pangasinan, as its central market along the main highway serves as the drop-off point for various fruits and vegetables coming from the different municipalities within the province and as well as other nearby provinces within the Ilocos Region and the Cordilleras. The farm products traded in wholesale or sold in retail here are always fresh and offered at comparably low prices.
The city is also the home of the largest cattle market in Northern Luzon.
Urdaneta also hosts the most number of financial institutions in the north with 110 rural bank branches, 63 commercial banks, 17 savings and mortgage banks, eight specialized government banks as well as 251 non-banking financial institutions. In Education, Urdaneta City has more elementary and secondary schools than any other city or town in Pangasinan. At the same time, it serves as the center of education in the eastern part of the province given its number of colleges and universities located here.
Travelers going further north in Luzon or touring around Pangasinan will find Urdaneta the perfect halfway stop with several Department of Tourism-accredited hotels, resorts and restaurants.
And while on a stopover here, it would be worth exploring Urdaneta because even if the central part of the city has now developed into a busy urbanized area, a drive through the inner roads still provides a charming and idyllic view of rural life where the air is sweet and the people are always ready with a welcoming smile.–Daniel S.
