Known as the birthplace of the Turkic peoples (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turkic_people), The Altai region (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Altay_Mountains)in the Central Asian part of Russia and Eastern Kazakhstan attracts a diverse crowd. For both foreign and home-grown travellers, it is a destination off the beaten track, full of natural beauty. For others, it is a place to settle and find peace of mind. Yet others travel there to find their ancestral roots and learn spiritual enlightenment.
