Hahah! :ohno:

If you look at PH performance since 2005, nowhere that PH landed in top 3.

PAGCOR earlier claimed that they fully support the sports agencies in accordance with law, thus there is no issue on funding. There are also big corporations that continue to support various sports.

"In accordance with its Charter and other governing laws, PAGCOR earnings are distributed as follows:

5 percent of the balance after the franchise tax and the National Government's mandated income share goes to the Philippine Sports Commission for financing of the country's sports development programs;"
http://www.pagcor.ph/

Obviously, you can't blame the failure entirely to the current administration. It is the fault of our sports officials, too much politics and the issue of corruption in PSC - Swimming.

Kung si GMA nga di nya tinanggal si Pepeng Cojuangco despite the poor performance in Thailand for 2007 Sea Games and Laos in 2009, si Noynoy pa!:bash:

Bakit nagiinit ka kay P. NOY? Dapat nga magalit ka kay GMA!

Eto si Peping Cojuangco. Uncle yan ni P. Noy.

Mr. Jose S. Cojuangco Jr.
2005-present

Jose Cojuangco Jr. was proclaimed President of Philippine Olympic Committee in January 2005 by acclamation with no contentious elections. Most people address him with distinction and familiarity as "Cong" short for Congressman, a position he held for five steadfast terms. He was not only involved in politics but in sports as well. He was the former president of Philippine Junior Bowlers, RP Golf Association and currently as President of Equestrian Association of the Philippines. With him at the helm of POC, we would be able to see progress in Philippine sports.

as i browsed sa mga sports events sa sea games, I think one reason why we are on the 6th is because there are actually some sports not even popular in Phil. what is futsal? penkak silat? kempo? vovinam? pentanque? napakarami pa ng gold medals na at stake rito. I think talent gap in SEA is still wide

cebuboi
November 21st, 2011, 10:55 AM
yes because the sea games governing body are not only giving-in on olympic sanctioned discipline but also giving emphasis to native sports of each locality which somehow helps in lifting-up the medal standing of each host country which is at times not good IMO.

hugodiekonig
November 21st, 2011, 11:09 AM
^^ if that's what SEA organizers want, then there will be talent gap. Regional sports must be equally promoted to all SEA countries. i don't agree that in order for other countries such as Laos and Myanmar to elevate their medal standings, nagkakaroon na ng sports disciplines that are exclusive to them. it's unfair.

MANILA, Philippines—Senator Antonio Trillanes IV has invited top officials of the Philippine Sports Commission, the Philippine Olympic Committee and heads of national sports associations to a Senate hearing on December 5 to shed light on the impending sixth-place finish of Team Philippines in the 26th Southeast Asian Games in Indonesia.

The country’s athletes will bring home a total of 36 gold, 55 silver and 76 bronze medals after today’s closing ceremony marking the end of the two-week hostilities among 11 countries held in the cities of Palembang and Jakarta.

“It’s a call for sports leaders to explain their flawed sports program,” said Trillanes, the newly installed table tennis chief. “The very dismal finish in the SEA Games is the ultimate manifestation of our (PH sports’) sad state,” he added.

disappointing nga naman ang performance natin, imagine pang-anim tayo, eh dati kung di tayo pangalawa eh pangatlo.

Darating ang araw na kahit yung sports na dominated natin ay mahihirapan na tayong maretain ang title.

the basketball games between Phil and Thai is an indication.

Surely our cagers dominated the game but its clearly not a walk in the park :ohno:

Soon, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and even Vietnam will give us a run for that basketball dominance in this part of Asia .

World class Davao del Norte Sports Complex Groundbreaking Ceremony
Tagum City’s plans and developments never cease to amaze me. Just before the soft opening of the Iconic New Tagum City Hall which will be opened this December, an architectural marvel will once again be witnessed by the people of Davao and Tagum which commenced last November 12, 2011 with the groundbreaking ceremony of the soon to be world-class Sports Complex.

Chris Tiu blasts ‘absurd’ state of sports
By Musong R. Castillo
Philippine Daily Inquirer

http://sports.inquirer.net/26409/chris-tiu-blasts-‘absurd’-state-of-sports

JAKARTA—There were several close shaves and moments of glory, and Philippine sports leaders can argue all they want that some silver medals should have been golds had it gotten a break here or there.

But overall, disappointment clearly attended the country’s drive in the 26th Southeast Asian Games.

The campaign was so disappointing, in fact, that even a Filipino athlete who went home with a gold medal in basketball still can’t accept the poor state of sports in the country now.

“If we lose to Thailand, to Indonesia, that would be OK for me,” basketball star Chris Tiu told the Inquirer Tuesday before joining the rest of the victorious Philippine quintet on the way home.

“But to lose to Singapore? That’s absurd.”

The Philippines capped its worst-ever SEA Games stint with just 36 gold medals, three short of the number it won two years ago in winding up fifth overall in Vientiane, Laos.

But there were only 25 events that year and thus a fewer number of athletes were sent.

The 512-strong Philippine delegation fell short of their two targets in these Games: To improve on that fifth-place finish and to win more medals. Meeting either one would have been a success.

“I have nothing against the Singaporeans, but look at them, they’re very few, the base for selecting the athletes is so small,” Tiu said. “And when you look at them, they’re not even athletic.”

Tiu has a beef there.

Talents have been scarce in coming for the Philippines. Clear case in point: After Miguel Molina, a former Most Outstanding Athlete in the SEA Games, retired a few months go, swimming laid a big fat egg in Palembang.

Taekwondo and boxing produced the most number of gold medals in Indonesia with four each.

“We’re better than them [Singaporeans],” said Tiu. “We’re better than where we are.”
Bickering among sports leaders and national sports associations has practically slowed the discovery and development of new talents.

Athletics, the country’s best performer in past SEA Games, produced just two gold medals courtesy of old faces who have dominated in the SEA Games.

At least, Philippine Amateur Track and Field Association president Go Teng Kok had the guts to pin the blame on himself.

The Philippines started these Games third all-time in total of medals won, behind the overall champion Indonesians and the Thais. At the rate the country’s progress in sports is going, though, it wouldn’t be long before Vietnam, Singapore and Malaysia catch up.

If that happens, the barnacles of disaster clinging to Philippine sports would be tough to get rid of.

The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) failed to meet its 70-gold medals target or at least a third-place finish for the Philippines in the recently concluded 26th Southeast Asian Games (SEAG) in Indonesia. Far below PSC Chairman Richie Garcia’s prediction, the Philippines won only 36 golds (7.4 percent of the total gold medals) and finished sixth in the biennial meet.

Philippine performance this year is even worse than our shameful fifth place finish in the 2009 Games held in Laos.

Our country’s performance in the SEAG this year is worst in the last 10 years.

Philippine Olympic Committee

Led by Jose “Peping” Cojuangco, the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC), the mother organization of all National Sports Associations (NSAs) in the country, is apparently more preoccupied with politics within its ranks than ensuring that only the best Filipino athletes be supported and allowed to represent the Philippines in international competitions. Those in the know say that only sports associations headed and tightly controlled by people loyal to Mr. Cojuangco and will continue to vote for him in every election for POC boss get POC accreditation.

As a result, there are two or more associations in each sport discipline. The POC-accredited one is that which is loyal to Mr. Cojuangco. Because their leaders became critical of Mr. Cojuangco, some associations in the outs were POC-accredited once but lost their accreditation to a newly formed group.

The damaging consequence of this is that excellent athletes belonging to associations led by persons outside Mr. Cojuangco’s sphere of influence end up being veritably non-existent in official POC-sanctioned domestic contests. Only POC-accredited associations receive support from the government’s Philippine Sports Commission. And in all the sports, only the results of events held under the auspices of the POC-accredited PSA are recognized by regional and international sports bodies which have mostly come to be governed by the International Olympic Sports Federations (IFs).

It is known that many of the best Filipino athletes are not in the POC accredited associations.

There is a lot of money in being the chief of a sports association. Not only does a PSA get funds from the Philippine Sports Commission, it also can campaign for donations from the private sector—and from the PAGCOR.

SEN. Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel 3rd on Wednesday said that he will file a resolution seeking a Senate inquiry into the perceived failure of the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) to meet its gold-medal target in the recently concluded Southeast Asian (SEA) Games held in Indonesia.
Pimentel, the chairman of the Senate Committee on Games, Amusement and Sports, wants to know why the Philippines fell short of its target and to determine if there were lapses or shortcomings on the part of the PSC.

The Philippines placed sixth overall in the recent SEA Games with 36 gold, 56 silver and 77 bronze medals, or two gold medals short of the 2009 output of 38.

Smarting from the Southeast Asian Games debacle, Philippine sports is looking to reigning Olympics and Asian Games champion China for much-needed assistance in future international stints.
Philippine Sports Commission chair Richie Garcia Wednesday unveiled the memorandum of understanding with his Chinese counterpart Liu Peng which will ensure an exchange of sports technology and resources between the two countries with the London Games next year as immediate target.
Philippine Olympic Committee president Jose “Peping” Cojuangco Jr. was also present during the affair. The PSC and the Chinese Sports Ministry signed the MOU last August and will be implemented as soon as possible, according to Garcia.

Now they realized their mistakes...

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) said yesterday that it welcomes an investigation on the lackluster showing of the country in the 26th Southeast Asian Games in Indonesia.

PSC chairman Richie Garcia said he is even wondering why Sen. Antonio Trillanes has even thought about inviting the PSC and the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) to shed light early next month on the lowly sixth place finish of the Philippines team.

“Hindi kami aatras sa imbestigasyon,” said Garcia. “I don’t even know why there is an investigation. But to call it an investigation eh parang meron kaming ginawang masama.”

The Philippine campaign netted 36 gold, 56 silver and 77 bronze medals and its lowly placing has raised a howl from some sectors.

In the 2009 SEAG held in Laos, the Philippines landed at fifth spot after placing sixth in 2007 in Thailand. When the biennial event was held here in 2005, the Philippines took the overall crown.

Disaster in Jakarta
Philippine Daily Inquirer
9:59 pm | Thursday, November 24th, 2011

http://opinion.inquirer.net/17897/disaster-in-jakarta

There’s really no escaping it. If our sports leaders truly believe that their mandate centers on running a credible national sports program, they should realize they are a failure.

No further proof is needed. They practically gift-wrapped the evidence and handed it to the public.

In a rah-rah moment before we sent our national athletes to the 2011 Southeast Asian Games in Indonesia, Philippine Olympic Committee president Jose “Peping” Cojuangco Jr. said the country would win 70 gold medals. Philippine Sports Commission chair Richie Garcia made the same rosy forecast. Yet another official, using his own version of sports math, said we could land in second place in the overall standings.

We ended up sixth among the 10 competing nations, matching our worst finish in the biennial meet. We collected 36 gold medals or just one-half of the medal haul Cojuangco and Garcia predicted.

Let’s call it what it is: a debacle and a monumental flop. Our performance in the SEA Games, not exactly the toughest arena of competition, was so dismal that even a relatively apolitical basketball star called it “absurd.” National cager Chris Tiu, who is a fierce defender of Philippine sports, told the Inquirer: “If we lose to Thailand, to Indonesia, that would be OK for me. But to lose to Singapore? That’s absurd.”

Cojuangco and Garcia have yet to give their assessment of how we fared in the SEA Games. When they do, they will have to explain why they were way off target and why we should still trust them with steering the country’s sports program all the way to the London Olympics.

They will probably blame the lack of funds (again). True, compared with most other delegations in the SEA Games, we were overmatched financially. But if international sporting meets are decided by the depth of each country’s war chest, why are there countries that manage to excel on small budgets? If the amount of money spells all the difference, why do we bother to take part in such sporting events in the first place?

Simple: money is not everything.

Somewhere along the line, somebody screwed up our sports development program. Go through the 36 gold medalists and you will find some very familiar names, some of whom have represented the country for almost a whole lifetime. In fact, nine of the 36 gold medalists were also winners in their events when we hosted the SEA Games. And that was six years ago, in 2005.

The country still has no strong talent-identification and grass-roots development program, relying on proven veterans even for regional competitions. Our officials put so much emphasis on winning gold medals in the SEA Games instead of using it as a springboard for young athletes to gain experience in international competitions and we end up becoming less and less competitive, especially in the bigger arenas like the Asian Games and the Olympics.

Consider this: Since Cojuangco took charge of the POC in 2004, our SEA Games gold medal count has gone down from 113 when we hosted in 2005, to 41 in Thailand in 2007, 38 in Laos in 2009 and 36 this year. If Cojuangco were CEO of a corporation, the board would have forced him out by now.

If there was one thing that increased during Cojuangco’s reign as POC president, it was politics. Officials spent too much time politicking, bickering, drawing lines and practically forcing others to choose sides. Among the sports that we were supposed to excel in, look at where we floundered: swimming, athletics, karate. Those three sports brought us 12 gold medals in 2009. This year, they were good for only two golds. Was it merely coincidence their sports associations were the most severely wracked by bitter disputes and in-fighting?

However this latest disaster is spun, the fact remains that too much politics always hampers sports development. After the debacle in Jakarta, our sports officials, starting with Cojuangco, must say the buck stops here.

It stops here, Cojuangco should say. And it stops now.

Because in 2013, the SEA Games goes to Myanmar, which finished this year’s edition in seventh place, 20 gold medals less than ours. Factoring the spike in gold medals won by a country that plays host, the possibility is strong that we will go further down in the overall standings.

Garcia said he could not understand “why we are being blamed” for the debacle.

Still, POC president Jose ‘Peping” Cojuangco admitted that while the Philippines has stagnated through the years, “our opponents are improving fast.”

Malacañang: SEAG debacle? What debacle?
By Christine O. Avendaño and Marc Anthony Reyes

MANILA, Philippines—Contrary to the observation that Filipino athletes did poorly at the recent 26th Southeast Asian Games in Indonesia, Malacañang Thursday marveled at their performance.

“We commend them for their performance in the Southeast Asian Games,” presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said at a press briefing.

Lacierda said the Palace did not think that the country came up with a poor performance despite winding up sixth in the medal tally—its worst finish since 1978, when the Philippines first joined the regional Games.

“Certainly there’s always room for improvement, but we congratulate our Philippine contingent for their noble performance in the Southeast Asian Games,” he told reporters.

Philippine Olympic Committee president
Jose “Peping” Cojuangco Jr., earlier said the country must follow the path taken by its neighbors by increasing the budget for sports.

It will be nice to see a Pinoy winning a medal in London next year. So far only our boxers seem to be in contention to qualify for a slot in the Olympics. While other countries are already preparing their athletes for next year, we are still looking for qualifying competitions that our athletes may join. But instead of bickering about our chances I found this website that will help our amateur boxers in their training and other necessary expenses. I hope you guys , being the sports fan and Pinoy that you are, may find time to donate to our boxing team. Spread it to others as this may be the only source of revenue our amateur boxing team may have aside from Manny V. Pangilinan's patronage.
Thanks.

so is it only through POC that the dragon boat team can join the Olympics (if dragon boat racing could have been an olympic sport), that they can't represent the Olympics without POC's approval?

Why can't they join rowing instead? It is very similar to dragon boat racing. The last time we joined there is at Sydney 2000

#1 - the sport has to be recognized by the IOC and THEN hopefully included in the next POSSIBLE Olympic Games. Nothing more can be added to London. All the spaces and venues for the included sports are already ALL assigned and built. They are adding women's ski-jumping and mixed-gender figure-skating teams for Sochi 2014. Golf will return in Rio 2016. But these are decided some 3-4 years before the actual Games.

#2 - Dragon racing is not governed by the IRU (the International Rowing Union), thus it CANNOT be included in the Olympic slate. And just because a sport is recognzied, it doesn't mean it can easily get in. There are like 30 confederations on a waiting list of the IOC. Plus, a Summer Games can only take 10,500 athletes, and some 3,800 for the Winter. It's all a matter of accommodations in the Olympic Village. If you add some more team sports, you will than have to remove participants from the ALREADY existing sports. So it's not a very simple matter to make happen. It's a rather complicated and long-drawn out process--always keeping in mind...they CANNOT exceed finite numbers in the OV; otherwise, the gargantuan nature of the Games will never stop.

I do hope our dragon boat racers could also use their talents in rowing.

They'll have to learn amongst the various disciplines of Rowing: canoe, kayak, the soft-shells, the 4s, the 8s; then there is white-water rafting. Then you have to work your way w/in the system -- compete in regionals, the world championships, etc., etc., working up to an Olympic Games.

If a country is serious in wanting to become a name in a sport that is not indigenous to its culture, it's probably best to hire a consultant already familiar with all the ins, outs, building, the powers that be, the coaching, etc., etc., so you grow the sport correctly and w/in the recognized int'l framework. It's all set up in a very heirarchical system. (Note: Rowing is a very euro, North America and NZ-dominated sport. Latin, Asian and African teams have barely made a dent.)

By Jacquelin Magnay

Will it be an anonymous young child , or the bookies' favourite Sir Steve Redgrave? A triumvirate of Seb Coe, Steve Ovett and Steve Cram? Or diver Tom Daley executing a twist with a pike from the top of the adjacent Orbit?

Yesterday's release of details about the London 2012 Olympic torch relay inevitably focuses the mind about the very end of that 70-day relay, the lighting of the cauldron in Olympic Park at the Games opening ceremony on July 27, 2012.

It is the biggest moment of the Games, the one point at which more than 3.6 billion people worldwide will be watching.

We all remember the Muhammad Ali moment in 1996 and the Cathy Freeman occasion in 2000. We might not remember the name (Li Ning) but his aerial run around the rim of the stadium at Beijing was unforgettable.

But when Locog chairman Seb Coe was asked who would be making the decision about that final torchbearer he responded "the creative team".

Philippines is scheduled to compete at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, United Kingdom from July 27 to August 12, 2012. The contingent for this Olympiad will be the smallest delegation in the history of the Philippines' participation in the Olympics since 1996.

Athletics

Marestella Torres - Long jump

Boxing

The Philippines has already qualified one (1) boxer for the 2012 Summer Olympics, namely Mark Barriga. Barriga will compete in the men's light flyweight division. He qualified after competing at the 2011 World Amateur Boxing Championships. He lost to Zou Shiming of China and subsequently lost a spot for Olympics but AIBA announced that there will be 10 qualifiers, instead of the top 8 in each category (except in the heavyweight and super-heavyweight).

Well, the Philippines has an NOC, so at least 2 officials of those attend. Now, it is also possible that some other Philippine sports officials might be attending as officers in one of the federations; or as judges or referees in one discipline or another. So they have a right to be there. That was the case w/ the Soviet Union in LA 1984. Even though they did NOT send athletes to compete, about 6 Russian officials still showed up in LA in their capacities as officials or judges/referees in other sports. The boycotts do NOT extend to judges and referees.

If the Philippines has a smaller team than at 2008, then it's because other nations made the minimum qualifying scores, and Phil athletes did not.

If only PSC could provide intensive trainings to our figure skaters, maybe we could have even just one or two Filipino representatives of the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics

See my other thread in this forum. It's a very expensive sport to be in. U may have the ice rink locally, but if u do not have world-class coaches to guide you, then u will never reach world-class levels. Maybe this Christopher Caluza will compete in Sochi -- but he has to also have Philippine citizenship in order to compete under the Phil flag in Sochi. The annual Wrolds competitions do NOT require citizenship of the NOC who enters you.

There will be sports officials who will also be facilitating the games indeed, but what I refer to are those politicians who only want to show up in the games rather than to support the athletes, just like what Otakaw said, to make pasyal-pasyal and do shopping around London :bash:

in order to be a world class figure skater (or any athlete for that matter) you have to sell your soul to corporate sponsors. the more sponsor an athlete has, the more money he can afford to pay services for notch coaches, dieticians, nutritionists, chefs, sports psychologists, PR men, massuese, fitness trainers, groupies and so on.

well, you have to good first before money drops towards to you. and that's where grassroots development comes in. Gov't programs and/or private clubs start to hone the skills and talents and nurture them. The rest is up to the athlete if he wants to get better.

in the world today, there is no more pure amateur athlete, everyone is one way or the other, professional athlete. yes, even in china.

according to this site, Philippines will send 5 athletes

The Philippines would field one of their smallest Olympic delegations ever at the London Games with just five athletes set to represent the world’s 12th most populous nation. Boxer Mark Anthony Barriga has qualified on merit, while each country must field a male and female competitor each to athletics and swimming regardless of performances, Philippine Olympic Committee spokesman Joey Romasanta told AFP. The Philippines have failed to qualify athletes in other Olympic sports they have previously had representation in, notably taekwondo, Romasanta said. The Philippines will attempt to get more boxers in at the last Asian qualifying tournament in Kazakhstan in April, but Romasanta was not optimistic. “It’s going to be very slim,” he said, assessing the Filipino boxers’ chances there. The country of 94 million people fielded 15 athletes in Beijing in 2008 and 14 in Athens four years earlier to try to break their Olympic gold medal duck. However none of them made an impression. After making their Olympic debut in Paris in 1924, the Philippines have won just two silver medals, both in boxing, and seven bronze. The last Filipino Olympic medallist was Mansueto Velasco, the losing finalist in men’s light-flyweight boxing at the Atlanta Games in 1996. Romasanta said he did not have the figures for the sizes of Filipino delegations to earlier Games. But press reports said the smallest Philippine Olympic team ever comprised four athletes who went to the 1928 Amsterdam Games.

The creative team behind the London Olympic torch has won the prestigious Design of the Year award 2012.

The aluminium torch was created by UK design studio, Barber Osgerby. It is perforated with 8,000 holes, each representing one of the torchbearers.

The winner was chosen from 89 entries and was presented at an awards ceremony at London's Design Museum, which organises the annual event.

Another Olympic design triumphed in the architecture category - the Velodrome.

The Olympic torch relay will run for 70 days ahead of the London 2012 Olympics.

The 1976 Montreal Olympics are best known for Nadia Comaneci's 'perfect 10' scores in seven gymnastics events. No female gymnast before her had scored the maximum even once at the Olympics. What is less known is that it took Montreal 30 years to repay the debts incurred hosting the Games. The Olympic stadium, initially called 'The Big O' because of its name and doughnut shape, came to be known as 'The Big Owe' because of the debt associated with it. Montreal is not alone in carrying a financial burden after the games; 21 of the 22 venues built for the Sydney Olympics are lying unused. A year after the 2004 Athens Olympics, the Greek government had to spend $124 million to maintain the idle facilities.

REPORTER'S DIARY: Is London ready for the Olympics?

These are just the sort of disasters the organisers of the 2012 London Olympics hope to avoid. Rather than a series of white elephants, the organisers want the Games to have a lasting legacy. For starters, they hope the event will transform London's East End, a neglected area notorious for its poverty and crime since the days of the Industrial Revolution. The organisers also want to use the Games to help British companies go global as well as to attract more foreign investment into the UK.

The United Kingdom's bidding team for the 2012 Olympics highlighted these objectives in a presentation to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) at Singapore's Raffles City Convention Centre on July 6, 2005. The IOC members were impressed and London edged out rival bids from Paris, New York, Madrid and Moscow. This will be the third time the city is hosting the games - it was also the venue for the 1908 and 1948 Olympics. No other city has had that distinction.

Petecio upends Aparri in boxoff

By Marc Anthony Reyes
Philippine Daily Inquirer
BURLY counterpuncher Nesthy Petecio nipped veteran Alice Kate Aparri yesterday, 8-5, to snag the Philippines’ lone 51-kilogram slot for a London Olympics qualifying event slated in China next month.

The 20-year-old Petecio frustrated the charging Aparri by connecting on the move in their boxoff held at the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines gym inside the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex in Manila.

Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines executive director Ed Picson asked sportswriters at ringside to score the bout. They also picked Petecio the winner via a 24-17.5 score.

“I can say that we have a very good chance with Nesthy,” said Picson. “She has the snap in her punches and throws a lot of punches. In this kind of scoring, you have to throw a lot of punches.”

With the score tied at 4-4 after three rounds, Davao del Sur’s Petecio scored at will in the final round to cruise to victory. She earned the right to represent the country in the Aiba World Women’s Boxing Championships in Qinhuangdao, China, on May 9 to 20.

Petecio needs to only make the quarterfinals in China to secure a place in the London Olympics in July.

Only light flyweight Mark Anthony Barriga has so far qualified for the Philippines in Olympics boxing.

“I told myself to be positive even if my knees were shaking at the start of the fight,” said Petecio in Filipino.

Aparri still made the trip to China to fight in the 54 kg along with Josie Gabuco (48 kg), a 20-8 winner over Irish Magno in an earlier bout.

The fact that we have more Pinoy torchbearers and performers in either the opening or closing ceremonies than actual athletes competing points to something wrong in our local sports program. Too much focus is given to Professional Boxing and other sports that do not count at all, in reality who keeps track of these boxing belts that a country wins? What makes amateur athletes leave their stable and opt for professional status? The amateur sports program should be really improved, it's just frustrating that the POC and the PSA have not yet devised the right program for our local athletes when other countries whom we just used to edge out in the SEA games and Asian games medal tally are already on their way to producing medalists in London. Malaysia, Vietnam and Singapore may just win their first gold medal either this year or in 2016, ahead of the Philippines.

In fact, the Pangilinan administration of ABAP retrogressed from the previous program of the Lopez's. The previous admin used to send at least 3 boxers and had a high of 6 in Barcelona, all which advanced to the second round of elims. The program reached its peak in 1994 Hiroshima Asian Games where PHL sent 3 boxers in the finals and all won, then, it was followed by Onyok's Silver Medal finish in Atlanta 1996. PHL remained elite in the Asian level for the next decade but never in the Olympics. Things began to deteriorate from 2006 onwards.

Well, in fairness to MVP and his executive director, Ed Picson, they have to start from scratch again and do away with the old boxers from the previous regime and retained only few elite boxers. To their credit, they had a better grassroots program and discovered some promising boxers through their efforts. But still, only 1 boxer is so deplorable.:ohno:

It's the greediness of coaches and managers from the professional pool that is causing a talent drain in amateur boxing. Lahat na lang tuloy ng amateur boxer na may potential, napupunta sa professional boxing. They already invite these boxers to turn to professional status kahit hindi pa naka-compete sa Asian Games or Olympics. Imagine if it was mandatory that our professional boxers compete in the Olympics first before turning Pro , Pacquiao could have won for us, even Ana Julaton could bring us our first gold from Women's boxing, the downside is that amateur boxers are not really paid well for them to be convinced to stay in that rank.

This is a sad reality, while we rejoice for every Filipino boxer's victory on a professional boxing match, we tend to forget our amateur boxers who must have great potential also for international games. They would have been a source of Filipino pride too. If only there is a strong support for them

What do you think if Manny Pacquaio did not go into professional boxing, but he went as an amateur boxer instead. how many Olympics gold medals would he have won, starting from 2000 Sydney Olympics? just dreaming (sigh)

style-wise, pro boxing and amateur boxing is like day and night, they are completely different, sure, it boils down to "throw a punch, dont get hit"...but in pro boxing, you try to hit the head every chance you get and score a knock-out. in amateur boxing, it's just like playing tag..you make contact with vital parts and boom, you score point. and most often, subject to the judges' decision.

very subjective indeed. Sometime race matters. I believe that was why Onyok Velasco lost to his Spanish Opponent during the 1996 Atlanta Games

ANALYSIS: Fixing Philippine amateur boxing needs more than just money (http://www.interaksyon.com/interaktv/analysis-fixing-philippine-amateur-boxing-needs-more-than-just-money)

There’s a running joke in the sports community about the generosity of Manuel V. Pangilinan, a patron of several national programs.

“MVP is so supportive of the sports that he is involved with that if there is a tournament that is held on the moon, he would not hesitate to send athletes there to compete,” said one jaded observer of the local sporting scene.

(Editor’s Note: InterAKTV is part of InterAksyon.com is the online news portal of TV5, which is chaired by Pangilinan.)

That’s almost exactly what happened to the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP) that the businessman finances and supports as well.

Last week, a five-man boxing squad took part in the last London Olympics-qualifying event in Astana, Kazakhstan, and went home empty-handed despite the heavy financial assistance Pangilinan’s PLDT-Smart had given it the past few years.

Charly Suarez came close to earning a berth to the London Games but he blew his chance, losing to a superior Chinese rival in the finals of their lightweight match. Too bad, because there was only one ticket at stake in the division, preventing Suarez from joining light-flyweight Mark Anthony Barriga.

Four other punchers — 2010 Asian Games gold medalist Rey Saludar, Dennis Galvan, Wilfredo Lopez and Joegin Ladon were eliminated early in the tournament.

Pangilinan can’t be faulted for the debacle.

The man had given so much to ABAP that it was a huge disappointment that only one amateur fighter would go on to compete and go for gold in London.

And even then, Barriga’s qualification to the Games is a hot topic among sports aficionados. He actually got an Olympic berth after his tormentor in the quarterfinals, Chinese Zou Shiming, went on to rule the division.

That means Barriga didn’t really gain his lofty status as a participant to the London Games because of merit, because he rode on the prowess of his Chinese opponent to secure the slot.

Still, ABAP is determined to back Barriga’s bid in London by giving him more than ample training and attention. After all, he is the sport’s lone bet in London at the moment, although two lady punchers will try to win slots when they compete next month in China.

Assigning blame

Since Pangilinan truly doesn’t deserve the blame for Philippine amateur boxing’s woeful performance, who should be held accountable?

This leaves us with the coaching staff and the management team that runs the ABAP program.

Some years back, a high-ranking ABAP official tried to recruit Filipino-American basketball player Alex Crisano to become an amateur heavyweight boxer owing to his imposing size, appearance and hardcourt attitude.

According to reports, Crisano used to wear a pair of gloves back in the US and had once knocked out somebody with just one punch.

The thrilled but clueless official thought he had some sort of a big idea by tapping Crisano to beef up the Philippine team and his brainchild even merited space in one of the country’s leading broadsheets.

When the idea was broached to Crisano, the guy said he would give it a shot, and when he was told to report to the gym one afternoon, a number of officials showed up to see if he truly deserves a spot.

But one official smelled something fishy when Crisano was still nowhere to be found one hour after the appointed time. When the official got Crisano on the phone, the 6-foot-7 banger sounded groggy on the line and was surprised when told about his gym appointment.

Inability to inspire

The lack of sound knowledge of the sport of boxing on the part of the ABAP hierarchy is just one factor for amateur boxing’s decline.

Another reason why the Philippines has been languishing in the world stage the past years can be traced to the inability of the coaching staff to inspire the fighters and even teach new things to them.

While members of the coaching staff are all decorated and competent, having donned the national colors and even won a myriad of awards, they have lost their luster.

It’s high-time that the ABAP do away with the current roster of trainers and coaches in favor of a new batch of strategists. Hiring a foreign coach — preferably from some Eastern European country — should make a difference.

The last time the Philippines took a medal home from the Olympics was in 1996 in Atlanta courtesy of Onyok Velasco.

Since then, the Philippines has gone home with fat eggs from Sydney, Athens and Beijing.

It certainly looks like Barriga will end up going home with nothing, unless he improbably morphs into a fearsome fighter in the months leading to the Olympics.

Between now and 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, it doesn’t look like the suffering will come to an end because it takes a solid program, knowledge, talent and dedication to realize an Olympic dream.

Philippine amateur boxing, after all, needs more than just money.

it was a Bulgarian who beat Onyok and won the gold

To become a champion Olympic boxer, one has to box like the soft-hitting, defensive, counter-puncher ala JM Marquez or Floyd Mayweather rather than the entertaining, hard-hitting, head hunting ways of Pacman.

but i believe, if the the pros are allowed, the pro boxer's reputation and presence alone can win bouts. especially if that boxer is MP or FM, or B-Hop or the Klitchkos. Imagine, a starstrucked welterweight fighter from Thailand facing global icon Manny Pacquiao, or a frightened heavyweight from China facing Vladimir Klitchko...

Manila, Philippines – All is not lost for the Philippines to send 10 athletes to the London Olympic Games, chief of mission Manny Lopez said yesterday.

So far, seven have already secured berths either by making the grade or being given consideration as wild card entries.

Lopez said that while sports officials are still three short of the target, there is still time to see more qualifiers with qualifying events on tap for archery, cycling and wrestling in the next two months.

The latest entry is judoka Tomohiko Hoshina, a FilipinoJapanese living in Tokyo.

Hoshina, 24, joins Marestela Torres and Rene Herrera of athletics, Brian Rosario of shooting, Mark Anthony Barriga of boxing and two from swimming as the Philippines representatives to the July 27 nto Aug. 12 sportfest.
