Bahraini Spirit December 29th, 2002, 12:51 AM very unique design, the bulding looks futuristic. I would give it 9.5 for its overall great look and originality. height doesnt matter much but it would have been neat if it was taller.

I've seen photos of this building before but never recognised the name. It's designed by Rafael Vinoly?
Medo May 24th, 2005, 02:48 AM nice one, 8
Kupakai May 27th, 2005, 09:33 PM I worked on the design of the building, and I would give it a 9, only because it would have been much more fantastic if it was built the way it was designed. It was supposed to be a department store on the lower 11 levels with criss crossing escalators in the front that you can see through the glass and a giant screen that went from basement 2 level to the second floor. The lattice structure on the cores was supposed to be much thinner because it was supposed to be painted with intumescent paint for the fireproofing the steel. Unfortunately, Seoul did not have code on the use of intumescent paint at the time so they would not allow us to use it. Instead, it is standard fireproofing with aluminum cladding to cover it, so it looks much thicker that it could have been.
The height, unfortunately was limited by the government and the military. From what I've heard, at the time of the design, it was one of the tallest building it that area (it's been eclipsed by many other now), and one would have been able to overlook in the the president's residence. They was concerned that a sniper could go up there and take a shot. Samsung had to pursuade very hard to even get the height that they did.
Anyway, it was a fun project to be involved in. By the way, it is Rafael Vinoly designed building, though architect on record is Samoo Architects (Samsung owned).
